ok im back for my rant about the fucking BRILLIANCE of Sir Terry Pratchett, specifically surrounding the discworld novels (because im probably a teensy bit insane but oh well who isnt nowadays)
first off, im a huge fan of the way he writes in general- so much so, in fact, that my own writing style is pretty inspired by him. its the perfect combination of sentence structuring and comedic timing and side-notes. not to mention the structuring of the novels themselves which also adds so much to the novel!!!
the comedy is always on-point (at least in my opinion, but that applies to everything i say here tbh) with short references and just ahajerirkrkfk my brain is short-circuiting but i fucking love pratchett humour its something unique and wonderful and oh so incredible. an example to possibly aid my word vomit- the use of footnotes to provide a comedic position on whatever its referencing whilst also providing context and worldbuilding is fucking genius and makes me laugh every single goddamn time.
on that note, the world-building is insane. the discworld novels are a collection of novels concerning a world that is flat and circular atop four giant elephants atop an even bigger space turtle called the great a’tuin. theres vampires, dwarfs, trolls, werewolves, gnomes, witches, wizards, warlocks, gods of almost absolutely everything under the sun, and all of them have bucketloads of history and personal culture. theres huge goddamn cities, rivers, towns- you name it, its probably been covered in the incredible worldbuilding. and yet its built in such a way that you could probably pick up any book in the series and read it with little to no context and still understand and enjoy the novel itself.
heres something i personally have the most admiration for: the casual inclusion of subtle lgbtq+ representation that just lights up my heart to no end. my favourite example is the dwarves. dwarves in discworld had little concept of gender in the traditional sense, all had beards and kind of just existed as a whole. when they started to move out of the mines and caves they lived in and into the big city of ank-morpork they gradually began exploring these concepts of ‘man’ and ‘woman’ and some dwarves realised that maybe they themselves wanted to be women too. most kept their beards and some changed how they dressed/presented to be more feminine but not all. of course there were some older dwarves who were dead set against this whole gender thing but overall its pretty accepted in the universe and there’s even a female dwarf as one of the main characters of the discworld subplots

I was totally going to send you an ask last time but I was at work and it just. Did not happen. So!! Anything about like a dog because that fic made me laugh so hard.

like a dog is unironically one of my favourite things ive written and admittedly I reread it quite often because it also makes me laugh very hard. ive had the mental image of Hawkeye biting someone since... very early on in my first watch. I think by like mid-season 1 I'd looked at my dad and gone "I think Hawkeye bites people like a feral little raccoon" which made my dad laugh very hard
the fic was born entirely from the need to just write SOMETHING. I was in a really bad bout of writer's block, just couldn't make anything work in a way that was satisfactory to me, so I decided fuck it! write something silly. write something stupid. and so like a dog happened. there's no real point to it, it's just a self-contained scene, and I honestly love that about it. there's no stakes, no deeper meaning, it's just a simple, silly concept
ive mentioned this hc before but I do personally think Hawkeye was a lot scrappier before the start of the series. there's a definite shift in how willing he is to like, physically attack someone in the early seasons vs the later seasons that really hilariously lines up with Frank's presence. Hawkeye physically goes at Frank multiple times, and once Frank leaves he mellows out significantly on it. this is most likely due to the show's overall tonal shift and moving away from the physical comedy of those particular spats, but I think it's just really funny to imagine in-universe that Hawkeye just. mellows out significantly when Frank isnt around him
thats why this fic is set in the early seasons (I imagine it being set in like, season 2) rather than the later seasons. now I do think Hawkeye would 100% bite Charles if he felt so inclined, but the vibe I was going for suited the early seasons much better because it being Henry's POV just fit the whole thing perfectly. he's so goddamn tired of this shit. he's tempted to shoot himself in the foot and take his chances. I wanted to really press on how both Hawkeye and Frank really deeply annoy him because my god can you imagine dealing with those two every day? Henry might like Hawkeye and be fond of him, but he's also very very aware of what a goddamn menace Hawkeye is capable of being, hence why his reaction to hearing "he bit me!" is to immediately believe Frank because yeah, it's Hawkeye, of course he fucking bit him
this is a scene I picture as like. the endcap of an episode. camera fades in at the beginning, and fades out at the end as the laugh track and musical cue play while Radar pours Henry a drink, and Henry is face-down on his desk gently thunking his forehead on it repeatedly. roll credits

ok i wish any of u could have been there in my class today sorry to wish that upon u ok i take it back im just mad i had to suffer i havent been that angry in a class and esp on behalf of my own work like maybe ever like. last semester i’d get annoyed but then id just go to my other prof or whatever and i was also distracted by film girl so like w/e but im really happy with my series idea and ive been having fun developing the characters and trying to figure out what i want to do yk but admittedly would’ve loved some feedback/ideas about how it’s working and etc (yk. the purpose of a fucking student writer’s room) and like. no one engaged with it at all. and yeah that sucks and the dramatic part of me is like well maybe i just suck but it’s like.. they didnt even try like they do with everyone else’s stories? i got pointless fucking questions some of which. litchrally had answers in the outline i provided. you know the whole central idea of class today. when i complained to my prof later on even he was like yeah who cares... (abt their questions. cause they did not matter to my story.) idk i was frustrated to the point that i was holding back tears lol so that was embarrassing. got told to my face that it seemed like i had like 20 minutes worth of content which just. isnt true i just didnt write word for word ‘and then she said this and she said that and he said this and then she did that’ like everybody fucking else did. use your goddamn imagination it’s a film class for god’s sake. and it’s not like anyone asked about what WAS there. oh also every single person that contributed was like yeah whatever this character’s name is haha forgot um yeah like whichever this one was. can you like pretend to care like you did with everyone else’s. it’s not even a 3 page outline u could like. look. youre gonna give more engagement and attention to the 9/11 self insert guy. yeah ok just say u hate women. that’s presumptuous of me i guess sorry. it was just sooooo annoying and i loved that class prior to this but obviously this stomped on my ego and im angry at like everyone who participated and yk. a few of them were ppl i liked before that so. bummer i guess

just a reminder to sam and max fans, including myself cause i tend to forget
sam and max isnt for kids
sam and max aren’t role models
sam and max aren’t good people
now don’t get me wrong, sam and max aren’t by any means bad people, they’re just people who do good and bad things. and the series is incredibly up front about it. hell the whole reason they became cops is because they like shooting people and beating people up.
there’s also this weird expectation that sam and max are never gonna say or do anything bad. the franchise was literally started because steve purcell was being an asshole to his brother. the franchise is rooted in rude and crass and inappropriate humor, they aren’t going to be super kind super likable people all the time, there are so many moments in every game, comic, or cartoon where they are being absolute dicks. and that’s the point! and that’s ok!
which brings us to my next point, sam and max isnt a franchise for kids. yeah, sure, they made a kids show in the 90s. but that exists in the weird 90s kid show limbo where they’re gonna remind you it’s a kids show every 5 minutes, but the reason they’re reminding you it’s a kids show is because they teased a swear or were gonna do something incredibly violent or there’s a sexual innuendo. 90% of the episodes of the cartoon have a gay sex joke, but sure this series is totally for kids. even the games and comics which are definitely not for kids still have this expectation of being ok for children put on them. which i think is almost dangerous when sam and max are sadistic jerks that openly joy in hurting people.
but guess what! you can still like sam and max! sam and max are nuanced characters! i fucking love this sadistic dog man and his small murderous husband! they are really well written which is what makes them so interesting. there are good and bad things about them. which is why it’s stupid when the franchise is censored or when people want to censor it, the whole goddamn point is that all the characters are kinda shitty and are gonna say and do shitty things.
i really want to stress that sam and max aren’t bad people, they are people that do bad things. but they also save the world, and help people, and love each other and their friends.
that’s what’s great about sam and max, despite being wacky zany cartoon characters, there’s still nuance and depth to their characters.

It was Friday evening, a day you and your roommate usually binge-watched movies and series, but not today. The sudden change in plans was a change you didn't want. After all, the change of plans meant helping your roommate to pack his stuff and help him bring it into his new Unit. A Unit that was far away from his previous one and it made you feel dejected. You wouldn't be able to see him that often anymore and for once you grew close to someone outside of Japan.
, Ow c'mon Y/N. Don't be sad. I bet your new roommate will be nice as well.'' You let out a grown as you let yourself fall down on your bed. , Yeah but he's not you and you're like my only friend here in the Unit.'' Christian let out a chuckle and then suddenly got up from his kneeling position, getting his backpack and suitcase. , Well, you'll be alright, '' he threw some of his last stuff in his backpack. ,,After all my new Unit isn't even that far away.'' - ,,Christian, what is 'not far away' about 30 fucking minutes?'' you huffed in annoyance, sitting up again death glaring your 'ex' roommate. His laugh filled up the room as he threw his backpack over his shoulder, it was time for him to go, and then again you felt miserable. You wanted him to stay, but it was his decision after all. After two full years with Christian you knew you weren't the reason why he left, he left for other plausible reasons.
,, Alright let me help you then.'' You announced, grabbing one of his bags opening the door for him. A smile was plastered across his face as he walked past you with all his belongings. Letting out a last sigh you followed him, hoping your future roommate would be as subtle as Christian...

After helping Christian carrying and unpacking his stuff in his new Unit, you just made it back to your Unit. You were tired and felt like a piece of shit. Christian was one of the only people you interacted with on campus and the only one in your unit. The rest of your friends attended Universities in Japan, mostly in Tokyo or Osaka, just the minimum was somewhere outside of Japan, including you. Moreover, it was hard for you to find friends since you lacked in social skills. And having a new roommate would totally throw you off, you didn't even know how you wanted to welcome him, you were just too socially awkward for this.
So when you finally opened the door to your little 'apartment' and discovered a new pair of shoes next to all of your shoes, you freaked out. He was already here and you literally had nothing to offer him. Not even goddamn chewing gum. This would most definitely turn into some second hand embarrasment, you were sure about it. You closed the door when you suddenly heard footsteps slowly coming your way. ,,I'm really sorry that I just barged in but you weren't here so I let myself in.'' There he was, standing in front of you. You recognised him right away. Suguru Daisho, the high school rival of a friend of yours. ,,Well well, if that isn't our Miss Nekoma Manager, Y/N it is, right?'' he leaned onto to wall, giving you one of his smug smirks.
,,Of all people, it really just had to be you, huh?'' you spat out ironically, slipping out of your shoes as you walked up to him. ,,Ouch Y/N, you hurt my heart.'' Letting out a fake sob, he touched his chest and tried to look as hurt as possible which made you sigh out in annoyance, so you walk past him showing no reaction. ,,Jesus, you're no fun.'' - ,, Never intended to be fun, especially when it comes to you.'' As you replied to his complaint, you just plopped down on the little couch, already missing Christian. You really were so close to just change units as well. It hadn't even been 5 minutes yet, but here you are already considering to move out. What an awful day you had. And your next years in Uni would get even worse with him as your roommate.
But things turned out quite differently.
You imagined living with Suguru must be the most annoying thing ever, but you were so wrong. First, you really thought he was just trying to get on your sweet side and then act like an asshole again, but you started to reconsider when he brought home some chocolates for you. It wasn't just that, no he did so much more for you, and all of that in just two months.
He cooked for you, whenever he had time. When you woke up every morning, there was breakfast on the table. He helped you with studying and kept his distance whenever he knew you needed some time for yourself. And most importantly, he never invited friends over, since it didn't take him long to find out you just couldn't interact with people. Of course his teasing side would come out sometimes, leaving some comments here and there, but he changed and not only by a bit no, he changed a lot and even for the better.
Living with him was easier than you thought.
And yet, yet the old things would obviously come back because today you wanted to tell Kuroo, who was and still is one of your best friends from high school, that Suguru was your roommate. God, you were nervous. You knew Kuroo has always hated him and he will most definitely not stop hating him, even despite the fact that you grew quite close to him.
So when you pressed the 'call' button on your laptop, you really just didn't want to tell him, but you had to. Even if you wouldn't tell him now, he would find out somehow. You really wanted to tell him in person, rather than him finding out and then getting mad at you as well.
Once his faced showed up on your screen you smiled and waved, shoving away the nervousness you just had. ,,Hey Hey Tets!'' - ,,Hey! How're you doing over there?'' he smiled, taking a sip from the cup wich was located right next to him. ,,Well Im doing pretty good! How're you and the boys doing?'' Kuroo's face turned dark, making you worry, but once you've heard his answers you couldn't have expected less from such an idiot as him. ,,Well we're all doing pretty good.... and yet I feel broken, Kenma's ignoring me once again.'' He sobbed ironically, making you smile in an instant. You had to admit it, you missed the old times. The time you guys were still in Highschool, enjoying life and just having fun. But over all you just missed your friends, you always see them hanging out with each other, going on trips together while you were stuck with boredom and nothing but schoolwork. Of course your friends were part of the University life as well, however it seemed like they had much more time than you. Less worries than you.

But while you were overthinking this whole situation, suddenly Suguru made his entry.
,,Eyo Y/N can you-'' - ,, What is he doing here?'' Kuroo frantically yelled as he regocnised Suguru, pointing at him through your screen. Great, you thought. This could've gone better if you had the guts to bring it up earlier, but of course your friend had to find out like this. Luck was definetily not on your side today. ,,Oi roosterhead, still lying about your height huh?'' Suguru smirked as he placed himself right behind you, moving closer to the laptop. ,,Get lost.''Kuroo scoffed and now looked at you while still pointing at Suguru. ,,Why's he here?'' he repeated himself, not leaving you out of his sight once. Yet you looked away, trying to avoid his gaze as much as possible, you would even prefer hiding behind Suguru than sitting here. ,,He's my new roommate... Christian changed units.'' You whispered slowly looking back to see if he was still watching you.
Suguru took his chance and moved closer to you as he purred. ,,Wait, you didn't tell him babe?'' Oh god you forgot the petnames he had for you and you hated him for using them on you now. After he moved in and you finally got along pretty well, he started with all these ridiculous pet names, just like honey. And oh god...this was definitely not going to end well.
,,Can you tell him to fucking leave?'' Kuroo asked, seemingly annoyed of your roommates presence. ,,Alright alright I'll leave, just don't forget our business later.'' and with that he left your room.
The sudden awkward silence that was between you and your best friend was more than just uncomfortable for you. In fact, you hated it, you just wanted to disappear. ,,How long?'' He was the first one to finally break the silence and you knew he was upset, after all Suguru just walked in and you didn't tell him at all. ,,Two months..'' you whispered, full of regret. Kuroo then sighed, hand on his forehead as he leaned back to process what he has just heard. ,,Two months? God.... why didn't you tell me?'' - ,, Listen I was scared.... I know you don't like him but we got along so well..'' you stuttered, trying to avoid his gaze again. Honestly you were scared. All this time you were scared that you might lose your friend, although this might be a stupid reason to end a friendship, you were still terrified.
,,Hey that's fine Y/N, liking each other and having a relationship is fine! Im not even mad I promise!'' You looked at him as he smiled, to let you know that it was fine. All you could do was smile back and be thankful that he wasn't mad at you. ,,Oh and we're not really in a relationship..'' You stated and let out a nervous giggle. Kuroo on the other hand leaned in closer and then whispered. ,,Yeah right hon.'' - ,,Kuroo.'' You warned, holding up your finger just as you were about to scold him. ,,Anyways, seems like you have some unfinished business with the snake, so go for it.'' You huffed, ready to protest that there was no business to finish, but before you could tell him otherwise he disappeared from you screen.
Sighing out in annoyance, you got up from your chair to go scold your roommate for his bold words he has spoken during your videocall. So when you saw him doing some schoolwork you seated yourself in front of him, death glaring him. ,,Just what exactly were you thinking?''you hissed in such a sharp tone, that even suguru backed off for a second. But he quickly collected himself and leaned in closer just to smirk at you. ,,What do you mean babe?" he asked, his voice soft and unbothered. You groaned again, leaning in closer as well. ,,He thinks we have a thing." - ,,So?" his reply was bold, just like as if he didn't care about your current situation at all, which was weird to you since he usually never acted or talked to you this way.
You answered him, voice quiet. ,,So you're just going to leave it there?''
The confusion was plastered all over his face. You didn't really know what left him so confused, but you needed answers and as for that you waited for an answer. ,,Wait wait wait.'' he said, holding up both his hands. ,,Is that disappointment I hear?'' - ,,Never.'' You leaned back, looking away and thinking how to continue this conversation, which obviously seemed pointless to your roommate. But it wasn't pointless to you, your friend literally just hung up on you just because of this stupid statement the guy in front of you had made. ,,Why did you say these things? What did you even mean by unfinished business? That's not appropri-'' you got cut off midsentence. ,,We still haven't decided what we wanted to cook this weekend. That's what I meant babe.'' he stated, as he held up a paper with an amused expression.
,Oh' you mouthed, sitting there in embarrassment as you tried to avoid his gaze. The embarrassment just grew bigger as you realised what you were actually thinking about.
,,Well well, it's okay to have these thoughts about me. But next time you might as well share them with me.'' His grin grew bigger, putting down the paper he just lifted up a second ago. That's it, you thought, he has crossed the line. You then suddenly stood up, cheeks flushing red as you huffed out in annoyance once again. ,,You're the worst.'' you muttered, stomping away to your room in an instant, shutting your door. But something was odd. No, you... you felt something odd happening to you.
You then realised your fastened heartbeat, your hot cheeks, still flushed in a light pink shade,you...you were confused.

Okay so I have to talk about the latest episode.
Or specifically, about the gross incompetence of not just Ironwood, but now it appears the Atlas Navy as a whole. To a degree that is now infuriating, and transcends the suspension of disbelief.
The entire series we have been told that the Atlas Military is a force to be reckoned with especially because they are the only serious Kingdom Military force. Which was all well and good when we were in Mistral where they had little to no presence.
But right now, they need to show us all those things they told us the Atlas Military was. And believe me I dont think atlas should win, but we should see them give far better of a try than any other kingdom could.
I understand James had them holding until salem made a move, which is why ive been silent up until now. But the moment those spouts of grimm shot up, everything should have been on high goddamn alert. But all we see is one ship try to fire at the centipedes. And I understand if they wanted to say they avoided firing at the centipedes because of the risk of damaging the shield towers. (Which would and literally did happen anyways so fire goddamnit)
But when that shield fell and the whale moved in, the FLEET LITERALLY HOVERING ABOVE ATLAS should have opened up immediately. If not then, than at least when it landed. Because not only is it now stationary and practically impossible to hit given its size. IT LANDED IN THE OPEN FIELDS AWAY FROM ALL THE ACTUAL PEOPLE. SO THERE IS ZERO RISK OF CIVILIAN CASUALTIES.
Some of you may argue “But Ironwood hasnt ordered them too.”
Which shouldn’t matter. A military operating at that size has a set of rules and guidelines to refer to so that they can operate with some degree of independence in the moment. For when shit hits the fan and they dont have the time or ability to reach their commanding officer and ask for the go ahead. When it comes to real life militaries most of these rules are about what to do when you cant identify if what you are facing is friend or foe.
But these are the Grimm. THE FUCKING ETERNAL ENEMY OF MANKIND.
“That giant whale shaped barrel of grimm, the enemy of humanity; is doing something that certainly isnt going to be good, we should stop it.” Should be the thought going through just about every single Officer in command of an Atlas Navy vessel just before they order their ships to open fire on it.
Now I have no doubt we will probably see some sort of atlas retaliation next week, but by this point it is far too late. That 45 seconds to a minute where is slowly lands and does nothing (Before opening its mouth to vomit grimm) would have been crucial start to the conflict that could end in an actual victory against Salem. Or at the very least could have made it seem very plausible for Atlas to win by strength alone. Driving up the tension only to have more and more grimm appear and overwhelm them.
This incredibly long winded rant just to say that im disappointed in the crwby writers on this one.

What are some of your favourite anime shows and movies? I'm trying to get into more anime
On paper my favorite anime is Mob Psycho 100. Its an easy recommendation, and imho just straight up one of the best anime ever made. Ive never watched something and been like "wow this is better than mp100". Specifically season 2. Before season 2, Space Dandy was my on paper favorite anime. Space dandy has a raunchier sense of humor that isnt gonna click with everyone, but I love it and like, as art? Its criminally underrated. If you are more familiar with english than Japanese this is also one of the few times when I will STRONGLY reccomend the dub.
Im also like head over heels for JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. Its a blast. Its so much fun to love jojos. Its a gift that keeps on giving. Its not for everyone, but its for me and i think it radically changed both how I perceive and create art. (Part 3 onward no comment but like. Part 1 and 2? Dub kinda Awful. Nearly stopped me from getting into jojo.)
Those are my current Big Three Things I love. All are artistically unique, high energy, wacky, and over the top so I definitely have a Type. On to some others I enjoy.
Some low key or dramatic shows I enjoy are a Place Further Than The Universe (i cried lmao), Mushi shi (i think ill always wish there were more mushishi. I could watch mushi shi forever), Yuru Camp and Flying Witch (two God Tier aesthetic iyashikei shows), ive only watched the first season so far but im weak for period drama and I really loved Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju s1, Shiki is a good horror anime I didnt expect to hurt me the way it did. Ill put sports anime here and say I have too many Yuri on Ice prints not to include it despite its flaws, and recently really loved Run With The Wind (great cast dynamic). This year Ive really loved the remake of Fruits Basket as someone going into the series p much blind. I need to finish Silver Spoon but the first half is <3 (same author as Fullmetal Alchemist!)
Speaking of FMA for action/adventure FMA Brotherhood is an obligatory recommendation. HunterxHunter is great, and i ADORE the cast of Boku no Hero Academia (and the rest of the show). This year Im enjoying the hell out of Demon Slayer Debated reccing this as it puts the Problematic in Problematic Fav but fuck it I LOVE Kill la Kill and if you can get past the fanservice (and i dont blame you if you cant or just plain dont want to) its so goddamn good. I dont wanna make a new category for these but recently I loved Zombieland Saga. And Ouran High School Host Club is a long time favorite. I also love Yugioh DM but like. Thats not something i generally recommend to people as its not really a great watch experience, its the characters that keep me there, but theres very little time made for th3 Good Stuff (i only pray one day it gets the Brotherhood treatment.) Im leaving out a lot honestly like. Megalobox is dope as hell. I enjoyed Fate/Zero even with like no knowledge or interest in Fate as a whole. Im probably gonna remember something I adore after I post this and be frustrated with myself. Like Anohana! Or Soul Eater! I mainly tried to only count shows ive either finished or finished a whole season of. Like im really loving dr stone but its like 8 episodes in.
MOVIES. Uh. Every Mamoru Hosoda movie Ive seen so far (missing a few) but especially Wolf Children. This director is REALLY good at making me cry.
Recently saw Maquia When The Promised Flower Blooms? 10/10 would sob uncontrollably in the theater again.
I liked a Silent Voice a lot. Especially how it like...visualized the main characters isolation. And that amazing subtle character animation. Really gorgeous movie.
I dont think I need to recommend ghibli movies to people but special shout out to my personal fav Mononoke Hime.
Satoshi Kon as always is worth looking into if you havent, ive only seen Paprika and Tokyo Godfathers at this point and the latter is my favorite of the two.
For some cute kid friendly stuff Arashi no Yoru Ni and You Are Umasou are uhhhhhadorable. Also the little witch academia short movies. If you like those check out the show.
Making this post also makes me realize how much stuff I WANT to watch or need to finish. (Like Red Line and K-on and Psycho Pass and Steins;Gate. All stuff i feel like id recommend if like. Id seen all or even half of it)
I watch a large variety of genres from dark psychological horror to cute girls go camping so I tend to tailor my recs to the person who is asking, but I tried to make this a general purpose collection of favorites lol. I def left some stuff out because typing on mobile as almost as unreliable as my ability to recall Things I Liked.

Mint Condition 14x04
If you follow me on the tweety you’ll know that I made a pathetic attempt at a full season re-watch starting in like… September. I got as far as the end of S5 before S15 began, but given my severe case of swiss cheese brain I decided to pause the full series re-watch there and pick up at 14x01. I figured it’ll be faster to get through S14 for a refresher and then go back to S6. Shut up my logic makes sense to me.
ANYwho, Mint Condition is probably my second favorite episode of S14 and definitely an overall series stand out for me - even tho I did have terrible nightmares after the first time I watched it. That fuckin dummy was goddamn terrifying and my subconscious was REALLY GODDAMNED SURE he was going to kill me in my sleep. I’m happy to report i had zero issues sleeping after watching it this time. :) Altho watch I just jinxed myself, since I am gonna watch again as I write this to pull quotes and screens.
You can tell I’ve been looking up recipes cuz theres a massive intro nobody gives a shit about before I get to the point of the post. NEVER FEAR! The good bits are under the cut.
Let me just start by pointing out that while I do believe that Stuart is a mirror for Cas, The whole toxic fanboy/incel/chan troll shtick isnt reflective of Cas as a person in the way we (I) would normally judge someone like that. I’m not sure if it’s because Davy actually sympathizes with and sees no harms in humanizing those people, or if it was for the fun of playing with a character like that, but there certainly are some parallels there - in the sense that even within his own community he’s a misfit, rebellious, and argumentative. either way, the trench coat is pretty damning.
Girl Sam comments that the store had been left to her and Dirk, but Stuart had been fired twice, the previous owner kept catching him stealing. But they hired him back because “he’s my friend”. That forgiveness, Stuart’s bad choices and lack of ‘impulse control’ it’s all reflective of Cas, even though it paints Cas in an unnecessarily negative light, on the surface it’s arguable but not entirely wrong. When Stuart pulls out the Panthro toy, his response is: “so angry, so handsome” and damn if that doesnt describe Dean lol.The fact that the first thing we see him do is steal this handsome, angry figure from the place it was sent is just another Dean detail.

These two are the strongest mirror in the ep. Bonding over candy, shared fashion sense and a love of horror flicks, Dirk tells Dean (those names) that he wants to ‘watch over’ Stuart while he is unconscious, and that despite his rough edges, Stuart has been there for him, giving him a place to crash and escape his shitty father. Which, I mean, this is heavy handed as fuck, presumably to make sure the GA doesn’t miss it, but seriously all this kid needs is an American classic muscle car and a love of Led Zeppelin.
This where I
curse my inability to gif because it’s the sublest of moments here but when Dirk asks Dean which of the All Saints Day movies is his favorite, Dean throws a quick glance over his shoulder, as if to make sure nobody is listening. He’s so used to hiding this side of himself, the nerd, the fanboy, that even though he’s a grown ass man that regularly kills supernatural evils, he instinctively looks around real quick to make sure he won’t get caught having this conversation. It’s heartbreaking, and I think, attributable entirely to Jensen - but that’s entirely spec on my part. He does this three times in this scene, before finally getting comfortable and enjoying Dirk’s company. Jesus you’d think he was engaging in some kind of elicit trade the way he’s got his head on a swivel. Poor thing.
“growing up it was always nice to check out for while… I like to watch movies where I know the bad guys’s gonna lose.” Dean’s preferred method of escapism is relatable, sure, but he’s also point blank telling us right here, WHY he’s been hiding out in his room watching these movies, he’s self-soothing. He’s just revealed that he was awake and drowning the entire time he was possessed by Michael, he doesn’t know why he was ‘released’ but he knows he came home to find a ‘house full of strangers’. The fact that his self care at this point is pizza, beer and movies the way he did as a kid rather than cheap whiskey, the way we’ve seen him do as an adult, probably speaks volumes to how actually affected he really is.
Dean being the one to wrestle with the father figure - the owner of the store who taught them everything they know before his death, leaving them the business to run and then possessing the lifesize figure of a mechanic who’d been literally burned in order to get revenge on the one who’d been stealing from them - I hate the idea of a John vs Cas parallel and I don’t think it was intended to go that deep, but there’s no denying a paralell between the ghost of Jordan and John.
The thread on these two, in my opinion, is a little thin. Beyond the ‘ha ha Sam’s a girl’ joke, and their shared science nerd bit here, the main thing really is that even though the store was left to Sam AND Dirk, it seems like Sam is the defacto leader. She’s the one we see dealing with the incoming delivery, she’s the one behind the counter, and she’s the one who called Stuart to call him out on their one star yelp review. At this point in the season, Sam Winchester is the defacto leader of the new hunter collective he’s inadvertently assembled by way of rescue hunters from Apocalypse World. She also demonstrates Sam’s usual ‘lore’ skills, figuring out that it’s the keys that the ghost is most likely tied to, and finding a chemical in the morgue to use as an accelerant to help rescue Dean. That’s literally all I’ve got on them two.
This is random, but the significance of that poster has been bugging me since the live airing of this ep. I do not understand that reference and it’s driving me bonkers, so if anyone does, PLEASE TELL ME.
