thoughts on "Welcome Home, Franklin"
(SPOILERS AHEAD)
Tumblr media
Okay, this special was really great.
I love Franklin. He's a sweet boy who never had a unkind thing to say about Charlie Brown- he was the straight man to the wacky antics of the Peanuts gang. But I never got the feeling he was more than that in the strips. This special serves as the backstory and character that Franklin didn't originally get, but sorely needed.
And this special beautifully and gracefully rights some of the wrongs that past Peanuts media made.
I was surprised this film even went there in terms of discussing racism a little. Peanuts is an IP that you expect people to be overly-protective of. 'No, the scene in "A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving" isn't racist- and it's NOT weird that all the kids are white' is more of what I expected to hear from this. But refreshingly, this special addresses it. Like, YEAH, there IS a lack of diversity! It feels so much better for that stuff to be acknowledged rather than swept under the rug.
I love the fact that Franklin is unsure of himself and his ability to make friends. This makes him super relatable and sympathetic, and also makes a clear connection to why he gravitates towards Charlie Brown. The two of them bond over their shared feeling of being "the Underdog", and not knowing how to make friends or navigate social landscapes. Franklin also opens up Charlie Brown to new experiences and knowledge, telling him about discrimination and introducing him to music he hasn't heard before. Not only that, but Franklin encourages Charlie Brown to be less anxious and push himself further. And Charlie Brown is a much needed friend and sympathetic ear for Franklin. They have each other's back and their bond is undeniable.
That's what this special is truly trying to get at. That friends of different backgrounds and experiences from us can help us to learn and grow as people. I think that's a really wonderful message and one that we all need at any age, and one that we especially need now.
Overall, this special really blew it out of the water, and I gave it five stars.
Special shoutout if you were able to make it to the premiere stream in the Peanuts discord, that made it twice as fun to watch!
Some miscellaneous thoughts under the cut
Franklin's music taste is so elite
The music picks in this movie are honestly fantastic. The soundtrack really elevates the experience and every song is awesome
THE BEACH SCENE! It's so rewarding as a fan to see moments that are plucked straight from the strip. It feels like the people making them really know Peanuts
All the little tiny schrucy crumbs- I eat it up. I know screenshots and gifs will be made and posted and I will be reblogging them.
Lucy and Franklin's beef- I wasn't expecting it but it's so funny and adds some really great dynamics into the fold
Since this is about the friendship between Charlie Brown and Franklin specifically, minor inaccuracies Franklin actually being on Peppermint Patty's baseball team in the strip are forgiven. Some fans more scrupulous than I would probably have an issue with this, but I'm not one of those fans. This isn't 100% faithful to Peanuts Lore but I don't mind.
I LOVED the scene where Charlie Brown wants to pull the breaks and Franklin wants to keep going. It shows so much without saying anything, and it gives way for great conflict that makes sense and comes from real places within the characters
And I love how Franklin is allowed to be mad, and he and Charlie Brown fight. We're not afraid to rock the boat anymore, and it makes Franklin feel so much more human
Just the right amount of Snoopy scenes, this one reached the perfect balance of Snoopy and Story
Everything is just so overwhelmingly cute here I had to restrain myself from writing "cute" or any of its synonyms in my review
"We saved you a seat!" <3333

task force 141 + favorite christmas movies
Tumblr media
Characters: Simon “Ghost” Riley, John “Soap” MacTavish, Kyle “Gaz” Garrick, John Price, Alejandro Vargas, Rodolfo “Rudy” Parra
Warnings: none
A/N: sorta did this already with ghost but now it’s time for the entire team
Tumblr media
john "soap" mactavish:
what can i say soap is a home alone kinda guy
he fell in love with them as a kid and he just never fell out of love
it's that sorta violent but still comedic and overly dramatized kind of humor that soap likes
plus he's a sucker for montages and you know home alone has a bunch of them
he's a fan of the whole series too
but the first one is definitely his favorite, just because it's classic
definitely gets freaked out by the bird lady in the second one (i think it's the second one)
and yes he's always wanted a home alone situation whenever he was a kid
he would literally pray for a duo of goofy robbers to try and break in whenever his parents weren't home
of course it never worked
but you know
a man can dream
he also knows all the home alone lore
and he freaked out when he found out macaulay culkin was married to brenda song
kyle "gaz" garrick:
so this goes hand in hand with my christmas songs headcanon
but gaz's favorite christmas movie is the grinch (2018)
bc 1. it has a fire soundtrack
2. it's got great animation
and 3. beneficiary cumberbun as the grinch was unprecedentedly good
he also doesn't like the live action grinch
he watched it when he was younger and it really scared him
like im talking it really scared him
he saw it in a hotel while his family was visiting new york for christmas
and then he refused to sleep on the wall side of the bed because he was scared the grinch was gonna come from under the bed in that sorta shadowy area between the bed and the wall and steal him
and yes he still sleeps on the lamp side whenever he stays at hotels now
even though he's a grown man
so yeah the grinch (2018) was a very welcome change to that
i mean the animation is so bright and cheery
what's not to love
plus he really likes how fluffy the grinch looks
and yes he watched it in theatres with his family so there's a lot of good memories associated with that as well
simon "ghost" riley:
so kinda similar to gaz
but ghost's favorite christmas movie is actually how the grinch stole christmas (1966)
for those of y'all who aren't up to date on the grinch movie release timeline that's the cartoon one
gaz doesn't like that one because that smile the grinch does in the beginning (you know what i mean, it's the one where his cheeks literally like migrate to his ears) freaked him out
but ghost actually enjoys that scene
he says it scratches an itch
he also likes the 1966 grinch because it brings him back to simpler times
he first watched it in school right before winter break
and then he went home and made his mom watch it with him over and over and over again
and so now whenever he has the chance he'll watch during the holiday season
it does make him a little sad though
you know since his mom's dead
anyways
john price:
price's favorite movie is charlie brown's christmas
he's actually a pretty big fan of the peanuts
is that what they're called? idk
so it's only a no brainer that the charlie brown christmas special brings him a special kind of joy
before he used to watch it on cable on christmas day
and then he got apple tv+ so now he watches it to get in the mood
guys this isn't an ad for apple i swear
he likes to cozy up with a blanket, some nice socks (he's a sock guy what can i say), a cup of tea or hot cocoa, and some biscuits
sometimes he falls asleep before the end tho
but it's not like he's never seen it before so it's fine
yet despite his love for the peanuts he does not have a charlie brown christmas tree
no his tree is always freshly cut down and usually pretty hefty
rodolfo "rudy" parra:
alright so this one also goes with my christmas music headcanons
but rudy's favorite christmas movie is the frozen franchise
and yes it's a holiday movie
he will fight you on that
in his mind snow + fire soundtrack = christmas movie
so yes goncharov would technically be a christmas movie by rudy's criteria
and yes he will fight you if you bring that up
he also really hates claymation
like really really hates it
it's too uncanny valley for him
like for it to be enjoyable it better be super duper obvious that the characters are clay
but even then it still catches him off guard
he also really likes christmas specials for like a bunch of shows
so after he's done with his frozen marathon he'll turn on his favorite shows and just watch the christmas episodes
and yes he does that for every holiday that has specials
alejandro vargas:
okay so potentially controversial opinion
but alejandro really enjoys hallmark movies
like it doesn't matter which one it is as long as it's a christmas hallmark movie he's down to watch it
he doesn't even know why like he's aware of how cheesy they are
but they've really mastered that feel good formula
even if each movie is riddled with plot holes
but even then that's also part of the fun too
like he enjoys inviting rudy or even the others over so they can poke fun at all the logistical impossibilities of the movie
and really that's what he likes when he watches the movies
the good memories he makes
ig it's true guys
the real lesson was the friends we made on the way
or whatever the saying is idk
he also likes the cheesy romance of it all
and also he doesn't tell anyone that he secretly enjoys the hallmark movies
with everyone else he pretends that it sucks
but he eats it up every time
and yes he always checks to see if the kiss happens at the same time
and so far it has almost every single time

[“December 1992: Fire flickers in the fireplace, colored lights circle the Christmas tree, a Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack plays from the corner stereo. Mom, Dad, Julian, and my very significant other, corwin, are seated on couches and loveseats, piles of wrapping and bows at our feet, piles of gifts in our laps. Mom is holding one of my gifts to her in her hands and reading what it says on the back. It is a slim gray book, barely bigger than a pamphlet, really, bearing the title Telepaths Don’t Need Safewords. This little chapbook is my first significant work of fiction, I feel. It is three erotic short stories, all with themes of bondage and SM, which I have collected and self-published under the new company, founded that March, Circlet Press.
This has been a year of change, as drastic perhaps as the year I moved out of the house and went to college. This year I quit my job in publishing and entered a graduate writing program, founded a press, and made my first professional fiction sales. I’ve sold one story to the Herotica 3 anthology, one to Penthouse. My mom knows this, I’ve told her everything, and yet…it has taken me eight months to give her a copy of the book. It’s Christmas Eve, and corwin sits in our family circle, looking over his gifts, laughing at my father’s jokes, joking with my brother. No one mentions, or notices perhaps, that he wears a leather collar around his neck.
May 1993: I picture my mother in the same position with the same expression, on stool, phone held to head with two hands, worry line and so on, as she leaves me a tense-sounding answering machine message. Nothing in the words themselves says that anything is wrong, and yet there’s an unmistakable edge there, not heard since a rainy car ride in 1985. I know, with an unnatural surety, that she has finally read the book. I call her back. She has clearly been rehearsing what to say to me. No sooner does she mention that she has read it than she produces a very tough monologue about how she didn’t spend her youth fighting for civil rights in the South to have me grow up to glorify slavery. Once this piece is said, she relaxes, and, since I can’t think of an adequate response, our conversation goes on to be like most of our phone conversations. We talk politics and pop culture, she catches me up on hometown gossip. Then she begins to complain about my father. Mother’s Day has just passed, and they’ve had a fight—Mom wishes she’d had certain issues out with him when they were newlyweds. She has almost thirty years of stored-up resentments over things she didn’t mention then, and so is unable to mention now. Our commiseration somehow leads me to describe the principle of negotiation, this being the basis of all loving SM relationships. I point out that the purpose of negotiation is to overcome the sad fact that partners, no matter how much they love one another, can not read each other’s minds. Each one is obligated to tell the other what they feel, otherwise consent has no meaning. I end with a leap of logic along the lines of, “So that’s why I feel that my eroticization of SM has to do with trust and respect for a special bond between two individuals, and nothing to do with the subjugation of one race of people by another for economic reasons.” Mom—who is, remember, extremely rational and well-adjusted—replies, “Oh. I get it now.” We’ve never argued about it since.”]

chan
he is just so happy that he gets to spend time with you that he’ll watch whatever you want. any time spent with you is time well spent, so he couldn’t care less what’s on the screen. he’s spending literally the entire time cuddling you while wrapped in the coziest, fuzzy blanket he can find. you spend half the movie saying he’s smothering you, but that's your problem because if you didn’t want to be suffocated by his love, then you shouldn’t have suggested watching a festive movie with your lovey dovey boyfriend.
minho
he has very strong opinions on whatever holiday movie you suggest and will probably argue about why literally any movie you bring up isn’t as good as elf. it is the best movie in his opinion and he will fight anyone (hyunjin) who disagrees. the only exception to this rule is if you say that nightmare before christmas is your favorite movie, in which case he will give you a pass (but you will still be forced to watch elf with him). every year he has an elf watch party with soonie, doongie, and dori and it takes years of fighting (and a bribe to bring elf hats for the cats) before he allows you to join.
changbin
he is a big fan of old timey christmas movies. but specifically the cartoon ones. he loves frosty the snowman and rudolph so so much. he literally has the entire soundtrack for both memorized and will be singing them nonstop for the entirety of the holiday season. he thinks a charlie brown christmas is the funniest movie ever because of the way the teacher talks. he also has a secret soft spot for nightmare before christmas (but don’t let minho know because it’s changbin’s guilty pleasure).
hyunjin
he refuses to watch anything but the classics. he’s exclusively watching films like holiday inn, miracle on 34th st, it’s a wonderful life, white christmas, etc. basically if it was made in this century, he doesn’t even acknowledge it as a movie, much less one that he would watch. it could literally be a holiday cinematic masterpiece, but if it doesn’t fall under the umbrella of what hyunjin considers to be a classic, then he won’t even consider watching it. (when hyunjin catches you watching hallmarks with felix it low key causes a fight.)
jisung
he absolutely loves the santa clause movies, but he basically only watches santa clause 3 because it’s the worst but he thinks its the best. no matter how many times you ask to watch something else, he always goes on and on about the santa clause until you eventually concede and watch some part (if not the entirety) of the trilogy. the best part of the holiday season this year for him was when he heard about the new disney+ santa clause show.
felix
he’s watching hallmark movies basically every single day of the holiday season. for some reason (that you will never understand), he somehow actually enjoys them and finds entertainment value in their cinematic choices. no matter how many times they repeat the same story with the same exact actors, he is always so endeared. even when you try to make fun of them, he always ends up finding a way to turn your insults into compliments. you still watch them with him, though, because you love how much he loves them.
seungmin
just like felix, he is also watching almost exclusively hallmark movies during the holidays. but not because he thinks they are good. it’s for quite the opposite reason. he loves making fun of every last little thing about the movies. like "wait, i thought this woman was a business woman not a starving artist?" or "when is the town christmas festival gonna go into ruin?" or "how will the marginally (not) attractive leads fix it?". you’ve never had more fun in your life than when you’re making fun of hallmark movies with seungmin.
jeongin
he loves absolutely everything about the holiday season, so when you mention movies, he is so down. he has already watched and will re-watch basically every christmas movie ever made. it is a whole event for him. he will have cocoa and cookies and themed snacks ready in less than fifteen minutes if you mention you want to watch movies with him. you will also never watch just one. the second the first one finishes, he already has a recommendation of what you should watch next.

Let's Read Peanuts (Yes, all of it) – March 1953
There are lots of great strips I just don't have room to comment on. I strongly encourage everybody to read the full month at the official GoComics page. Today's month starts HERE.
Mar 1, 1953
Tumblr media
Torn between being irrationally angry at this boomer-ass “kids these days” take and loving that room's aesthetic.
Also I'm pretty sure that this is the song in question for those who are curious.
Mar 3, 1953
Tumblr media
I haven't been showing them because the joke is bad and I hate it but there's a whole bunch of strips about Lucy's bread and butter sandwiches and her insistence that they be folded over and not cut. I'm guessing it's a thing Schulz's daughter was doing at the time.
Mar 7, 1953
Tumblr media
A mildly antagonistic relationship is forming.
Mar 8, 1953
Tumblr media
Living with Lucy must be a special kind of personal hell.
Mar 13, 1953
Tumblr media
Careful, that girl will crush your abnormally large head like a grape. I've seen her do it.
Mar 15, 1953
Tumblr media
Nice to see Schulz finally figured out how to draw thought bubbles.
Mar 26, 1953
Tumblr media
Solid punchline, but the best part is actually the casual dig Schroeder drops in the second panel.
Thoughts:
Watched A Charlie Brown Christmas for the first time in decades over the holiday and it's... fine? I think it's something I respect more than enjoy. There are specific moments that I like and certain artistic decisions that I think work phenomenally (the jazz soundtrack, for example). I even like the message despite not being in any way religious.
But man, it's kind of a mess. I was constantly distracted by awkward cuts, animation errors, weird line readings, and all kinds of other issues. Plus the whole “we need to get this Christmas play ready” plotine just kind of gets dropped at the end and that really bugged the hell out of me. I don't think that this is the animation team's fault, apparently they only had 6 months to write and animate the entire thing, but the lack of polish really shows and I wish they had just a bit more time to tighten things up. Then again, that same jankyness gives the special a certain human touch and charm which I suspect is a large part of why a lot of people still like it even today. So who knows if changing things would make it more enjoyable.
Overall I think this special still ~mostly~ holds up, even if it's not my favorite piece of animated Peanuts media. It's over before you have time to get mad at the parts that don't work and at the end of the day when the kids decorate the tree and start singing I felt the feelings it wanted me to feel. And really, that's all it needed to do.
Soooo... I guess keep this one in mind for when you're looking for something to get you in the Christmas mood in like... 11 months? (Yeah, I really should have watched this thing earlier so I could post this before New Years. Oh well.)

hi again!
what are your fav christmas songs (and why?? 👀)
OooHHhH
I have so many 😭😩 I genuinely live Christmas songs so much…from traditional carols to more secular stuff…the music is straight FIRE
Of the secular stuff I like White Christmas (cuz I sure am dreaming of one) Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas (“we all will be together if the fates allow” 🥺) Silver Bells (xmas time in the city !!) I’ll Be Home For Christmas (🥲 so full of longing) and probably others tbh
I think I like every traditional carol WOOO. What Child is This has always been a fav cuz its in a minor key and the lyrics are dope (“nail, spears shall pierce him through/the cross be borne for me, for you”) ALSO I LOVE every verse of O Come O Come Emmanuel. Also O Holy Night!!!!
Some underrated carols are Fum Fum Fum, The Holly and the Ivy, and Lo, How A Rose E’er Blooming.
My family have two carol books that are great and I could go for any carol in them really
As for more non-traditional stuff, I love Lemon Demon’s Christmas EP, The Beach Boys’ Christmas Album, Louie Zong’s Christmas EP, the Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack, and the Christmas songs from the musical A Year With Frog and Toad. (I like Pentatonix Mary Did You Know but literally nothing else on that album.)
I also really love choral, orchestral, and instrumental arrangements of Christmas songs. Some favs this year have been jazz arrangements, dulcimer covers, and orchestral/band arrangements.
Thanks for the ask and Merry Christmas!!

Some MCU DR Tea Pt. 1
Hey y'all!!!!
Ok y'all so I watched Shay's (shifttoker) live last night and she was talking about the shufflemancy she got for her tasm (the amazing spider man) DR and it seemed really fun so I decided to give it a go! and the tea I got??????? (For context, I don't really have a lot scripted for this DR and it doesn't really follow the MCU's plot especially after Age of Ultron. Also, I didn't have a ton of questions so it's not very many songs)
If you don't believe in shufflemancy: Cool. I don't give a shit. Goodbye.
So the first thing I asked: Give me a song that describes me and Dean first meeting in this D.R.
(This I do have semi-scripted, I know we meet when Pietro, Wanda, Abbi, and I are still anti- avengers and we're getting the vibranium from Klaue. The vibe I had was that it was gonna be flirty but we're literally gonna be fighting each other so a semi- serious meeting)
I got: Summer Feelings by Lennon Stella ft. Charlie Puth
I'm not gonna lie to you at first I was HELLA confused. I thought this song is waaayyy too light hearted but then I looked at the lyrics and she's right
"And I'm trying to keep it cool"- Describes how I'm gonna feel at first. Not only am I gonna be nervous cuz this is the first fight I'm gonna experience but also seeing Dean for the first time I know I'm gonna be NERVOUS. He's just too gorgeous.
"And I found a piece of me that I never knew" -This part comes on right before Charlie's part so to me this part represents the exact moment after I first see him. I instantly knew that I was never gonna be the same (I always knew that fucker was gonna ruin my life in every reality makes sense cuz he's ruined it here lol ((affectionate)))
"You got my heart and I'm head over heels in love" -Charlie sings this part so I took that as it's from Dean's perspective, self explanatory.
"Oh, now what you do? Your brown eyes tell the truth" - In Charlie's part of the song. This to me meant that Dean could tell I wasn't really team Ultron (Which is true I never trusted the fucker, I was just going along with my siblings. And he did free me from Hydra so I guess I gotta go along.) His "See I happen to be able to read people" moment lmao. Extra confirmation cuz my eyes are brown (now that's delusion skskksks)
"Yeah, you got to me, and I came out someone new" -Also sung by Charlie so also from Dean's perspective. After we met he'll never be the same either.
"I'm trying to keep it cool" "And I, I found a piece of me that I never knew' -Still sung by Charlie so still Dean's perspective. Basically he's feeling everything about me that I'm feeling about him.
Bitch, it's love at first sight FOR REAL. (I didn't even script that arc but slaayyyy)
"I'm meltin' like ice cream The stress is gone for me Nowhere I'd rather be"- Sung by Lennon, so my perspective. Even though we're literally in a fight rn he makes it better and my ass is falling for him (I did script a flirty one on one fight with him) so after the one on one I'm no longer nervous, and all that's left is him.
"And I, I'm trying to keep it cool" "And I found a piece of me that I never knew" -Towards the end of this song, sung by both, so both our perspectives. Because it's at the end I felt like this was after we part ways. We're both trying to seem like it was no big deal, and that we're unaffected. But we both know that's bullshit.
In conclusion, this song has a you take away all the bad/ you're like paradise kinda vibe to it so even though we're initially on different teams we're still gonna fall for each other in spite of everything. (Romeo and Juliet who? LMAOOOO) Bonus confirmation this song was on the Scoob soundtrack and Dean loves himself some Scooby-Doo
This got SO much longer than I was anticipating so Ima end this here and do more later maybe

REVIEWING THE CHARTS: 04/05/2024 (Taylor Swift, Tommy Richman, Kendrick Lamar's "euphoria")
Just a week after her album’s impact, Taylor’s been dethroned by… Sabrina Carpenter! She grabs her first #1 on the UK Singles Chart with the smash hit “Espresso” and welcome back to REVIEWING THE CHARTS!
Tumblr media
content warning: language, Yeat praise
Rundown
As always, let’s start with the notable dropouts, which are songs exiting the UK Top 75 - that’s what I cover - after five weeks in the region or a peak in the top 40. Now this week, we bid adieu to: “The Tortured Poets Department” by Taylor Swift (it got three-song-ruled and dropped out from #3, more on that later), “act II: date @ 8” by 4batz featuring a remix by Drake (not his best week, more on that later), “Von dutch” by Charli XCX, “Kitchen Stove” by Pozer, “Whatever” by Kygo and Ava Max, “Murder on the Dancefloor” by Sophie Ellis-Bextor and FINALLY, “Lovin’ on Me” by Jack Harlow.
As for our gains, we see healthy boosts for “Pedro” by Jaxomy, Agatino Romero and the late Raffaella Carrá at #60, “Outside of Love” by Becky Hill at #54, “Evergreen” by Richy Mitch & the Coal Miners at #46, “The Sound of Silence” by Disturbed at #42 (yeesh), “These Words” by Badger and Natasha Bedingfield at #22, I Don’t Wanna Wait” by David Guetta and OneRepublic at #20 - I guess obvious covers and remixes have a good week - then finally, a song hitting the top 10 I’m personally very happy with: “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” by Shaboozey at #6. #1 incoming? Please?
We also continue to see the rise or, rather, resurgence of Amy Winehouse’s catalogue due to the biopic, with “Valerie” with Mark Ronson at #38, “Back to Black” at #39, and a re-entry for “Tears Dry on Their Own” at #49, which peaked at #16 when Ye’s “Stronger” was #1 in 2007. On that same album, he says he hates Nazis, look how far we’ve come. Anyways, “Tears Dry” contains a sample of “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”, made famous by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, which didn’t chart in its original form for the longest time here. It peaked at #6 in 1970 but only in the form of a cover by Diana Ross, whose version charted whilst Freda Payne’s “Band of Gold” was #1 - just shows that we don’t really remember the bigger hits of the time. The Boys Town Gang reached #46 with their cover in 1981, Whitehouse and Jocelyn Brown both charted with covers coincidentally in August of 1998 - they peaked at #60 and #35 respectively - and finally, the original first charted at #80 in 2013, amazingly still its peak, and briefly re-entered earlier this year. “Tears Dry” itself was sampled the last time Amy made the top 40 in 2023, with Skepta’s #28-peaking tribute “Can’t Play Myself”.
As for our top five this week, we start in the dregs with “i like the way you kiss me” by Artemas at #5, “Beautiful Things” by Benedict Cumberbatch at #4, “Too Sweet” by Hozier at #3, then of course Taylor Swift’s “Fortnight” featuring Post Malone at #2 and “Espresso” at #1. It’s an interesting one today, folks, with a lot of unique and frankly, fantastic stuff to cover, so let’s start with… Kygo?
New Entries
#75 - “For Life” - Kygo and Zak Abel featuring Nile Rodgers
Produced by Kygo, Nile Rodgers, Ollie Green and Franklin
I’m honestly a bit surprised Kygo is still notching chart hits, especially without a big name attached this time. Sure, Nile Rodgers is a legend, but he’s doing so much dance-pop garbage in his later years that I don’t think many people check specifically for his collaborations, so there’s got to be something in this that’s unique, right? Aaaaaaand it’s a sample. It’s a nostalgia bait sample of a 2000s EDM track because of course it is. French house act Modjo debuted with “Lady - Hear Me Tonight”, which spent two weeks at #1 in 2000 and is an absolute classic I still return to today, even if Modjo were basically a one-hit wonder. “Lady” of course is built on a sample of “Soup for One” by Rodgers’ own band CHIC, which comes from a 1982 soundtrack album, never charted and kind of been eclipsed by “Lady”, largely because the original is honestly pretty bad, uninteresting and surprisingly stiff for an 80s funk track, with some of the weakest and most slap-dash implementation of synths. “Lady” really took the best parts of that song - its undeniable guitar melody, that isn’t even put to great use in the original - and constructed an entirely new, incredible song out of it. So I can’t tell if it’s pathetic and desperate for Rodgers to try and reclaim it, or something that speaks to the power of musical transformation. Oh, what am I kidding? It’s Kygo, it’s just kind of boring. It’s a rote piano house track that goes for the same tropical atmosphere Kygo has been doing for years - a lot of the same festival synths are there, it’s all full of bubbly swooshing that actively sound like pastel colours. The only real hook of the song is taken from Modjo and re-sang by Zak Abel, with slight lyric modifications taken from the “I’m Good (Blue)” department of refusing to allow for fun in your dance songs, and even that just feels desperate. What did Nile Rodgers even do here, man? Sign a legal document saying you can use the hook? It’s not even his Goddamn hook.
#69 - “Solo” - Myles Smith
Produced by Peter Fenn
Myles Smith is a singer-songwriter I hadn’t heard of until today but has been active since at least last year and is making at least some consistent buzz so I was interested to see what his first slow-burning chart hit here has to offer and… are we just, IN, 2012, 2013 now? We had festival house with the last song, the next song is heavily Yeezus-inspired, and this is a full-on Aloe Blacc stomp-rock song. It isn’t bad either - I actually had to get used to hearing his richer voice on this kind of scattered clap-stomp-holler folk track, and whilst this is nothing unique given the solemn pianos, spattering of strings and of course, that jingling indie folk rolick, that doesn’t feel particularly organic on this one, it still is far from bad. The lyrics are somewhat generic but not in an awful way, and the “so low”/”solo” double meaning is somewhat clever or at least, would be if in the context of the song, they actually meant separate things. It’s a bit annoying that it’s the main conceit because both have negative connotations for Mr. Smith here, so it just feels like he’s repeating himself rather than elaborating on his feelings or presenting a dichotomy. I imagine it’ll be a lost on a few people due to botched execution, which bothers me because it was an active attempt at clever songwriting that gets kind of lost in sonic translation. This sounds like I’m picking apart the song’s flaws but it is really just a fine little woodlands jams with a great singer, infectious hook and by the end, a damn fine melodramatic string section. I can see it growing on me, especially due to its gorgeous outro, but for right now, I’m somewhat lukewarm, not going to raise a fuss if it ends up smashing though and in a Noah Kahan world, I suppose it’s quite likely.
#64 - “If We Being Real” - Yeat
Produced by Synthetic, Radiate, Fendii, LRBG, Perdu and Dreamr
So terrible news: I like Yeat now. I’m still not granting him his silly little umaluts, and I won’t go too in-depth here, mostly because there’s another song worthy of in-depth analysis, and every piece Yeat’s put out fits into the jigsaw of the album’s narrative as a whole… it would require a lot more time and space, and frankly words, that I’m willing to give #64. No track feels unnecessary on 2093, the atmosphere is consistent across all 24 tracks, and lyrically, it’s a concept album, which I would have never expected from Yeat and he pulls it off brilliantly both sonically and thematically without straining himself to areas he probably couldn’t reach like trying to be super lyrical or stepping away from rage pads. Given the album’s experimentation and length, I wasn’t surprised by the lukewarm commercial reception, but I did at least expect maybe the songs with Future, Wayne or Drake on the deluxe, to have charted by now, when this hasn’t even happened in the US. So when the penultimate track on an album that’s over an hour in its standard issue becomes his first solo hit in the top 75, I have to assume TikTok virality is involved.
Regardless, I’m glad it’s here because it’s brilliant. Sonically as a separate track, it’s one extended verse over a corrupted industrial beat that cracks in right after a mystical intro full of textured but meandering strings, that get swooshed out of existence by a cinematic, malfunctioning clunker incorporating Yeat’s inhuman ad-libs, manipulated behind vocal recognition, into infectious loops within the beat. This is one of few songs - another’s coming later - where I can understand the sheer amount of producers. Lyrically, the title refers to Yeat or more accurately, his psychopathic billionaire character, attempting to shed some of his CEO veneer and ultimately failing, adopting a lot of the violent, power-hungry rhetoric the rest of the album relies on, making it a pretty ironic and depressing title, especially when considering its place in the rest of the album, coming right before the… actually honest and heartbreaking closer, “1093”. In the backhalf of this album, Yeat’s bragging sounds increasingly monotone and routine, and him rapping in and out of distorted filters or going up and down from his traditional murmur to a choking yell, exemplifies how sick and tired he is of the lyfestyle he curated for himself. This song in particular ends with him barely on beat for a beat that doesn’t even really have a beat, becoming a factorial ambiance more so than anything coherently rhythmic. I have no idea why this song in particular is going viral - it doesn’t have a chorus or even really some of the catchier, more potent lyrics on the album, and its beat barely functions as such for the vast majority of the song - Hell, it’s not even one of the album’s integral moments like the opener, “Bought the Earth”, “ILUV”, “Shade”, “Riot & Set it off”, or really countless others, but I’m not complaining because the sound design, the care placed into thematic and narrative consistency, it’s all still here. This is a 10/10 album, and if this song gets more people to check it out, I really can’t be upset with that.
#58 - “Love Me JeJe” - Tems
Produced by Guilty Beatz and Spax
So what’s “Love Me JeJe” actually mean? Well, in Nigerian Pidgin, it means “gentle” or “tender”, and the use of a more regional term rather than the English actually contributes greatly to why I think this song works: Tems’ buttery voice has always been able to display both coldness and a sensual warmth, often at the same time, but on some of the bubbliest guitars I’ve heard over an Afrobeats rhythm since the genre started charting consistently, she’s fully in that second category. Hell, most of the lyrics are pretty basic here, especially the practically meaningless chorus, but that’s to its benefit because thinking too much about this song defeats its purpose: to be gentle. It’s a frankly adorable expression of love and care at its most optimistic extent possible. Despite the clean, tropical percussion, it still feels cute and homegrown. Hell, the second verse, after a nice back-and-forth choir vocal, even references the Nigerian electricity provider that’s apparently nationally infamous for its power outages, with the lyric comparing the love she feels with her partner to the feeling when electricity comes back on in the village and all her neighbours inform the locals. Combine that with how breezy this is, the easy-flowing bridge into an outro full of murmuring, chatter and reverb-drenched laughing, it just makes for a really cute, likeable song. Not necessarily what I expected out of a lead single from Tems, but a delightful surprise. Now to balance that with pure hatred.
#50 - “euphoria” - Kendrick Lamar
Produced by Cardo, Kyuro, Sounwave, Johnny Juliano, Yung Exclusive and Matthew “MTech” Bernard
There’s part of me that finds it quite funny that Drake gets into serious beef with an incredibly analytical and perfectionist rapper like Kendrick right after putting out his own exposé of himself. For All the Dogs is as much of a dissection of Aubrey Drake Graham, albeit perhaps unintentionally, as Kendrick or really anyone could perform, as long as you’re paying attention. It’s been like that (no pun intended) for a while, but his latest is the most obvious and desperate attempt at clinging to status and image that it places his insecurities fully on display. You could recite lyrics from that album on a jazz beat and call it a diss track, so the fact that Kendrick went back to back with damn near dissections of Drake’s paranoia - especially on the Instagram follow-up track he made that is chilling - as well as a myriad of different issues he has with Drake, simply because… well, he doesn’t fuck with Drake. One could argue that this feud is complex and storied, with so many different  beligerents… but the motives behind it are genuinely a lot simpler than most rap feuds, and the diss tracks that are made from it are way more straightforward. They just outline the reasons they dislike each other, almost systematically, it’s genuinely refreshing, or at least a lot more than what’s going on with Quavo and Chris Brown, yeesh.
This track in particular is as calculated as can be, acting as a dissertation on why K-Dot doesn’t really like Drake too much. It’s condescending, damn near academic, with its smooth jazz intro and categorical shoot down of each possible avenue you could hit Drake from. We have sextuple entendres on this thing, a total of three beats, two of which are cheap-sounding but absolutely murderous drill bangers, and Genius annotations that rival War and Peace when combined. I’m not a lyrical expert, and there’s so much in here that I didn’t get until I was pointed towards that direction by Genius annotations, Reddit, X, or, embarrassingly, YouTube Shorts. You don’t need to research or analyse for this to hit hard though, there are plenty of lines that aren’t going over anyone’s heads… until you look into the exact way the bars are constructed and suddenly they have 20 double meanings and hidden easter eggs. This is really sheer venom, filled with so many layers that I wouldn’t be surprised if he genuinely wins a GRAMMY for it - and it would be in character considering Drake doesn’t even nominate his songs anymore. It’s already having an effect too, that 4batz album came out today, and he’s not signed to OVO as rumoured. Ye’s on the record… but not the already existing and heavily-streamed Drake remix. Already, he may be losing some of that prestige.
As far as it is sonically, it’s six minutes of murder, and Kendrick’s delivery is energised, violent, damn near deranged at times, to perfectly balance how, somewhat subtly through his meta commentary about his own bars and albums, the lyrics are basically an essay. It has an introduction, a conclusion, a hypothesis, written examples, he even presents counter-arguments and weaves them into his own analysis. By the time he was going extremely in-depth about his experiences as a father, and just repeating that Drake knows nothing about that, it almost felt like overkill. My personal favourite lines and ideas presented here are the concise slow dagger of the intro verse, the “Demun”/”throwaway” scheme, the voice and character he puts on between “Cutthroat business” and “I’ll explain that phrase” - he’s like a disappointed teaching assistant, obviously the YNW Melly line and its set-up, the incredible Daft Punk line that got a cackle out of me on first listen, then followed up by a mocking interpolation of one of Drake’s most revered songs, the straightforward rant about everything he hates that references an iconic moment of DMX’s trademark honesty (rest in peace), the “record” scheme in verse three, and when he started the fake Canadian accent, I just lost it. Drake’s biggest weakness here is that when he’s funny, I’m laughing at him, but when Kendrick’s funny, I’m laughing with him, and much louder. If he does respond, unless the man tells us that Kendrick’s whole life and career has been a farce, or he brings, like, the actual former President Obama on the track or something, I can’t see how it tops this. This is one of the best diss tracks ever in terms of sheer detail, and might honestly be one of the greatest throwaway rap singles period. It’ll be tough to beat.
#31 - “MILLION DOLLAR BABY” - Tommy Richman
Produced by Max Vossberg, Jonah Roy, Mannyvelli, Sparkheem and Kavi
This is the sudden breakout hit for Virginia rapper-turned-singer Tommy Richman, which actually comes in two versions on Spotify, the original and a more distorted “VHS” version. Also, this is brilliant. Sure, Richman just sounds like Brent Faiyaz, but a trend I haven’t been able to talk about on here necessarily but has been very exciting for me is the return of grittier, groovier synth funk and hyphy beats into underground hip hop and R&B, with this representing the more melodic end of that sound, which is typically restricted to Midwest and Dirty South rappers. The sound design on this one is actually even unique to that sound, starting with a bizarrely British-sounding Memphis rap vocal loop which I think isn’t a sample and is just him doing a bad impression, filtered below an infectious beat that actually took me by surprise. It even has cowbells and the type of punchy jabbing drums that I love from classic southern rap, but instead of the smooth-talking rappers you usually expect over this, we get a Brent Faiyaz impression that didn’t click with me until hearing this song. I never really got his appeal until I hear it over this and I start to realise the very distinct new jack swing element to his vocals, as he pretty seamlessly transitions from soulful double-tracked harmonies to much more rhythmic, half-rap flows. Now this ISN’T Brent Faiyaz… and I still don’t really like Brent Faiyaz, but hearing his wannabes I think helped me gather what was distinct about him, and the literal Richman North of Richmond here pitting his filtered splatter of vocal ideas and riffs over the beat in a very Devil-may-care fashion exemplifies the elements I do like about him, just with an instrumental that I personally like a lot more. Also, the VHS version is labelled as such but is really just like a bass-boosted version of the song that sounds like it was done in 10 seconds in Audacity, though the vocal mixing sounds a bit different too. I would love for someone to explain why that was the version I ended up adding to my playlist, because I couldn’t tell you.
#8 - “I Can Do It with a Broken Heart” - Taylor Swift
Produced by Jack Antonoff and Taylor Swift
I know I wrote my whole Taylor spiel last week, but I’m not bothered about this one at all, and I really did expect it to be a fan favourite, mostly because, as the one track I actually enjoy on the standard version, she’s having fun! The lyrics are actively vapid, which doesn’t feel like the intention when she’s singing over soppy adult contemporary but very much feeds into the almost childish character she plays here over synthpop with an actual pulse. The synths here sound like a theme park she’s taking the boy to, especially with the backing vocals and chatter samples implemented into the ambiance and classic Antonoff wonky synths - though some of this doesn’t even sound like it’s in his ballpark. Like were Marian Hill or Sofi Tukker ghost-producing this? Some of these loop choices and flashy sound effects are frankly ridiculous, in the best way of course because the song is camp and fun. Sure, some of Taylor’s lyrics still come off a bit awkward, mostly because of her choice of slower melodies sometimes clashing with the fast-paced patter of the synthscape, but that’s a nitpick. I do love this song, I think it’s fun, Hell, I think it’s funny which is something Taylor has always kind of failed to translate to me in the past, so that is something. I just don’t think we have the same sense of humour. Does she like Norm Macdonald? I don’t feel like she does. Correct me if I’m wrong, Swifties.
Conclusion
It should be incredibly obvious who gets Best of the Week, it’s Kenny, easily, with “euphoria”, and I’m sorry, Swifties, but Yeat better. “If We Being Real” takes away with the Honourable Mention pretty easily as well, though really, strong competition and strong week all around - Tems was close too. There can’t be a Dishonourable Mention in this climate so, Worst of the Week goes to Kygo and Zak Abel for “For Life” that “features” Nile Rodgers, it genuinely just is a lazy template of a song. As for what’s on the horizon, I’m not sure. Dua’ll have some impact, but outside of that, time may have to tell. For now, thank you for reading, long live Cola Boyy, and I’ll see you next week!

Hi Ada! Here is my nice ask for you— what's your favourite animated movie? Can you choose a favourite? Is this a hard question? (This would be a hard question for me)
Hello Dalawa! I hope the cold hasn't been too horrid where you are!
Treasure Planet, no competition.
There's a lot that I truly do love, don't get me wrong. Brother Bear, Meet the Robinsons, A Charlie Brown Christmas are just some that are strong contenders for second but Treasure Planet will probably always be my tried and true.
When I lived in Europe, we couldn't afford cable in every room so when I was nestled in my room (I now do the same thing with my apartment, I am a creature of habit lol) I would watch a lot of movies and that was one I always had on repeat.
I think it's because I was a little in love with Jim Hawkins (after finding out he was voiced by Joseph Gordon Levitt, a lot of things made sense [as I am a JGL girlie] ), completely mesmerized by Captain Amelia and very intrigued by Dr. Doppler.
I also thought the story was beautiful, the animation was cared for and the soundtrack, oh the soundtrack. So yeah, it's got to be Treasure Planet. I like to think that if we'd ever got a live action one, Tanner Buchanan would make the perfect Jim:

Hocus Heathens (Unexpected Musicals) — PattyCake Productions music video
youtube
The PattyCake guys love Hocus Pocus, so it's no surprise that it was the inspiration for their first Halloween production. Reframing an angsty rap-rock hit into a campy recitative-style party tune is pure genius. After all, who is more of a heathen in the eyes of pop culture than an unapologetic witch?
Details:
title: Unexpected Musicals – Hocus Heathens
performers: Jennica McCleary (Winnie), Jaimz Dillman (Mary), & Stephanie Trilli (Sarah); Alexander Browne (Billy); Kaley Kolb (Dani); Paul Vesco, Sam Zambito, Charlie St. Cyr-Paul, & Nate Anderson (band members)
original song / performers: "Heathens" by Twenty One Pilots for the Suicide Squad (2016) soundtrack; "I Put A Spell On You" by Screamin' Jay Hawkins (based on the Hocus Pocus version by Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker)
written by: "Heathens" by Tyler Joseph; "I Put A Spell On You" by Jalacy "Screamin' Jay" Hawkins & Herb Slotkin
arranged by: Layne Stein & Paul Vesco
release date: 5 October 2016
My favorite bits:
recreating the tinkly "I Put A Spell On You" intro music from the movie
the ladies nailing the Sandersons' melodramatic characterizations and choreography
really leaning into ♫ "we can smell your intention" ♫, because the witches spend the movie sniffing out their quarry
♫ "You don't know the half of the abuse" ♫ "She's vicious." ♫ ::double stomach punch::
the subtle bell chord on ♫ "slow slow slow" ♫ in the final chorus
starting the call-and-response section with the regular lyrics, then slipping into the incantation from the movie
(Side note — Layne, where did you find that incredible crossword puzzle jacket?)

Trivia:
Jennica was extremely comfortable in her role as Winnie, having played her many, many times in multiple contexts through the years, from Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party at Disney World to the racy Peek-a-BOO burlesque show. (She's also one of Tony's fellow "Beetlejuice Revue" alumni.)
Stephanie (and her sister Tiffany, who plays Cruella in the Villains' Lair series) are also "Beetlejuice" veterans, having played several roles between them.
Jaimz had appeared in VoicePlay's "Patreon pizza party" launch videos the previous autumn.
The crowd in the club is made up of many PattyCake friends and family members. (Including Layne's sister-in-law, who ended up doing double duty as "Medusa" and also in the maid costume.)
All three main actors reprised their roles the following year for PattyCake's villain-tastic "Look What You Made Me Brew" video.
Layne performed a very different version of "Heathens" in VoicePlay's "Twenty One Pilots mashup" collaboration with Kurt Hugo Schneider a month later.

Idea shamelessly stolen from @queenoftherodeoo, my top 15 albums 2022 ✨
1.     Wet Leg – Wet Leg
36 minutes, 12 tracks, not 10 seconds of filler on the entire thing. Feral bubblegum perfection.
2.     MUNA – MUNA
It’s just everything you want in a pop album. Sad. Thoughtful. Queer. Full of bops.
3.     Tropical Dance - Charlotte Adigéry and Bolis Pupul
Slinky disco with big beefy beats, just impeccable, sophisticated vibes from start to finish.
4.     We’ve Been Going About This All Wrong – Sharon Van Etten
This is probably my favourite album of hers yet. It’s dark and moody and hopeful and ethereal all at the same time.
5.     Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Cool It Down
Love the way this album veers between classic YYY stampy audacity and sounding a bit like Goldfrapp.
6.     Sudan Archives – Natural Brown Prom Queen
TLC vibes mingled with 90s classic hip-hop like Jurassic 5, layered with whip smart lyrics.
7.     Confidence Man – Tilt
This is so 90s, just pure Dee-lite/Saint Etienne nostalgia with a sprinkling of savage lyrics. See. Them. Live. You will have the absolute time of your life.
8.     Beth Orton – Weather Alive
Has Beth Orton ever released anything that didn’t feel like peering into my own soul? This is so fragile in places and yet also underpinned by the classic Orton steel that drew me to her on Trailer Park.
9.     Charli XCX – Crash
Hooks for days and deeply infectious. Each track makes me go ‘this is my favourite’ only to be replaced immediately by the next one.
10.  Father John Misty – Chloe and the next 20th Century
Just an impeccable collection of layered retro sounds--from grandiose lush soundscapes that wouldn’t be out of place in old Hollywood movies to pseudo-70s soundtracks with someone staring wistfully out at the rain.
11.  Amber Mark – Three Dimensions Deep
Kept hearing this song that had such a next level low-key sexy funk vibe, I was convinced it must be a Prince cover. Imagine my delight on discovering no, it was Amber Mark and she’d made an entire album like that.
12.  Pre-Pleasure – Julia Jacklin
Love the slacker turned sweet vibes here and she always delivers on the lyrics.
13. Profound Mysteries III - Röyksopp
Every track is its own mini movie soundtrack. Just a completely immersive record.
14. Léon - Wildest Dreams
Her voice. I want to take a bath in it. That’s it.
15. Beebadoobee - Beatopia
Smart and funny with melodies for days, I love everything she does but this album is the most cohesive and consistent thing she’s done so far.
I threw my top three tracks from each plus my favourite 25 songs this year into a playlist if anyone fancies some new tunes.

okay ignore that last one i meant who’s ur favorite artist (my brain is not working today help) 😭
AAAAAAAAAA this is the most difficult question u could ever ask me & i mean that so seriously
(i’m assuming we’re talking music artists not visual artists, if we’re talking fav visual artist i’m basic & van gogh is my fav even tho i don’t rly like impressionism 🫶)
my most listened to artist changes constantly bc i like…..binge discographies? i’ll listen to an album or an artist nonstop for like two months and then move to another one, so from that point on that two-month period of my life is defined by that specific artist. like, the summer between my freshman and sophomore year of high school is coldplay, specifically mylo xyloto, and even more specifically ‘charlie brown’ 🫶
i love so so many artists and so many of them have soundtracked the most important parts of my life it’s so hard to choose 🫢 however. if i must answer. my top artist for the last three years has been taylor swift, so for simplicity’s sake let’s say she’s my favorite artist 🫶🫶
