Ellie sat on the grass outside of Tommy and Maria’s house with Tommy, pulling apart the last few wedges of an orange.

“Are we still gonna get to sit out here after Ellie is born?” she asked, looking over at Tommy, trying to suppress a small grin.

“We’re not naming her Ellie,” Tommy repeated with a tone of long-suffering patience. “And yeah, we’ll still sit out here. My brother needs some peace and quiet sometimes.” He grinned over at her to be sure she wouldn’t take his teasing to heart. He had to remind himself that she hadn’t always had Joel to care for her.

She popped a slice of orange in her mouth then slapped his arm lightly. “Careful, I could come by every fuckin night once little Ellie is asleep to borrow some pots and pans. See if you get any peace and quiet.”

Tommy gave her a look. “Little menace.”

“Tommy tiny brain.” She ate another slice of the orange.

He chuckled, looking down at the ground. “Sounding more like Joel every day.” Tommy glanced over at Joel, who was sitting under a tree reading, not too far from them. “And he’s sounding more like himself.”

Ellie looked over at him, her eyebrows raising slightly. Tommy saw her looking at him and met her gaze. “I never thought I’d see him again.”

“You told him the trip to the university-”

“No.” Tommy shook his head, his eyes filling with tears. “No, I never thought I’d see my brother again.” He shook his head again, ducking his head down to wipe his eyes quickly.

Ellie patted his arm awkwardly.

He looked over at her, smiling. “You saved his life, kid.” He laughed slightly. “I’ll always be grateful to you for that.”

She leaned over, hitting her shoulder against his. “And I’ll remember that every time I say hi to Ellie.”

She grinned when he groaned, leaning back to fall on the grass and covering his eyes with one hand. “I walked right into that.”

“You so did.” She giggled, then smacked his arm lightly as he sat back up. “All right, night, Tommy. I’m gonna go home.” She stood up, wiping off her pants.

“Night.” Tommy watched her walk away, frowning when she didn’t head toward the house she shared with Joel.

She walked over to the tree Joel was sitting under instead, pulling his arm up for her to duck under so she could position herself against him. She leaned her head on his shoulder, and he kissed her hair. Tommy shook his head, smiling to himself.

Pain has always been a familiar feeling to Barbara Gordon. Growing up in a city that has death hiding behind every corner and underneath every bridge it is hard to escape. It was easy to slip into the role of Batgirl as the pain was already an old friend.

While weapons did not bounce off of her skin, and she still bruised, more than a normal person actually, it was easier to ignore the pain. To keep on going flinging herself towards danger to protect her city. Even as her body aches something special settling deep into the bones.

A gun shot is not the pain that Barbara Gordon was used to. A bullet ripping it's path through her muscle was a new type of pain. It brought even more pain with it, and a new relationship with the world along with it.

Pain can be chronic it turns out, lasting so long that you grow used to it loving within your body. And see the aches and pains as nothing odd, don't notice when there is something wrong. Until you are forced too.

hoshino fumika is a japanese windows 100% utau released in 2013. shes voiced by Hirano fumi, and illustrated by しずまよしのり("shizumayoshinori" i think) (M_ars on twt). fumika was sold with the windows 100% utau perfect master magazine. utau wikia says fumika was introduced on 2 jan 2013, but wiki2.0 and vocadb say 1 feb 2013. also utau wikia says she came in the january 2012 edition mook, then later that she came in the july 2012 edition, and niconicopedia says it was the jan 2013 edition.
