I've been thinking a lot about the depictions of generational trauma and parental accountability being presented in dramas lately. Since you've watched way more than me, especially outside of BLs, what are some shows that present or include parental accountability?

This is such a good question and one I have been thinking about a lot since Last Twilight episode 10 aired. Westerners often assume that because of Asian cultural norms around filial piety, parental authority, and respect for elders, we can never expect satisfying parental accountability in our Asian drama narratives. But that's not true! It's been done and done well. It’s because these values are so deeply embedded in most Asian cultures that Asian creators are the best positioned to speak on the harms they can cause, and will often embed these themes in their work.

Now, there is an important distinction to make here: the difference between what characters do, and what the story communicates. A character may choose to abide by honoring their parents at all costs, but the story can still communicate how harmful that is. A character may never apologize for something they have done wrong, but the story can still make it clear they have fucked up and hold them accountable for that via tangible consequences. Here are a few examples from bl to illustrate what I mean, and the different ways this can show up in dramas.

Bad Buddy

One of the most obvious examples of parental accountability in genre, and also a pretty full metal version of it. This entire story is about the damage Ming and Dissaya did their sons with their decades-long feud and insistence on pushing that trauma down on their children, and we got some extremely cathartic scenes of Pat and Pran telling their parents exactly what they thought about that. Of course, even though they raged at their parents, they never got the apologies they deserved (and likely never will) and still had to hide their relationship to appease their parents going forward. But that doesn't mean there was no accountability here. The entire narrative held these parents accountable by showing us how they were harming their sons, forcing them to reckon with it, and ultimately showing them settling into a form of resigned acceptance.

Until We Meet Again

This entire show is about Korn and In's reincarnated souls healing from the trauma of their tragic ending, which was brought upon by the familial pressure and rejection they experienced from their fathers. We not only saw Dean and Pharm work through this trauma and forge new bonds with family members, we saw the direct aftermath of their first deaths, the despair and regret their families felt, and the ceremony that tied their souls together as a result. It's big karmic accountability on a grand scale, and the show never flinched from letting us see exactly how much harm was caused by these parents, or how the tenets of filial piety resulted in Korn's despair that he couldn't be what his father wanted. Even more crucially, we were shown, not just told, the counterpoint impact of good parenting, when Dean and Pharm were accepted by their families in their second life.

Blueming

A rare example of an Asian parent being called to the carpet, feeling the wrongness of their actions, and actually apologizing for it. This does in fact happen in drama! Si Won's mom raised him to hate himself, to be ashamed of his body, to fake his way through life so people would like him, and boy did it do a lot of damage. The story showed us how this affected Si Won and his relationships deeply, and brought him to the point where it finally burst out of him. And his mom, to her credit, was dismayed to understand what she had done to her son. This show also gets bonus points for Da Un standing up to his own mother after she interferes in the film contest.

Bed Friend

Uea's mother's sins against him are numerous, and I will not go into them all in detail to spare my own sanity. She is an abusive parent so horrific that she can never be forgiven, and doesn't need to be. An apology from her would be utterly meaningless. Instead, the drama holds her to account via showing us what she's done to Uea and the work he has to do to heal from the trauma she caused, and ultimately having her son cut her out of his life. It's the biggest consequence she can ever face for her choices and that Uea finds the courage to do it is the story's biggest triumph.

What Did You Eat Yesterday?

On the subtler end of the scale, we have our beloved KNT, which weaves parental accountability through its story in the long, slow journey for Shiro's mother to accept who he is and the partner he has chosen in life. What I love most about this particular depiction is that it's not at all linear in nature. We see her make strides by finally acknowledging Kenji and inviting him to her home, and then backtrack by rescinding the offer due to her own discomfort, and then include him in her family planning to ensure he will be cared for after her death. She’s homophobic and traditional, but she loves her son and sees how much happier he is with Kenji in his life. She is constantly reckoning with that tension. And Shiro and Kenji, being of an older generation themselves, don't hold it against her, even as the show makes sure we understand how much it hurts them. They are not okay with it, but they do understand why she's like this, so they take what she can give and forgive the rest. It's a really touching portrayal of this kind of impasse in a family.

Moonlight Chicken

There are several different vectors of parental accountability in MLC. There is Heart confronting his parents over their neglect and abuse and finally demanding to be treated with dignity. There is Li Ming directly calling out his mother for how her life choices have affected him. And there is Li Ming and his surrogate dad, Jim, working out their issues so that they can communicate better, and so that Jim can learn to stop pushing his own fears and anxiety down onto the next generation. All of it handled with deftness, with care, and with clear purpose to examine the ways intergenerational trauma can perpetuate in the absence of accountability.

So lately I've been watching a lot of Thai dramas, but I started with manga/manhwa, so I'll be talking about both.

1. I'm gonna do top 3 favorite tropes, because I can't think of 5.

Hidden Agenda. Not like the Joong/Dunk series. I'm talking about when a character comes onto the scene with a secret personal mission but foils their own plan by falling in love. This, of course, leads to a snowball of lies, followed by the inevitable dramatic fallout. For example:

Not Me - Honestly, just fucking outstanding. I love this series so much. The guilt that White feels the longer he keeps the lie going, and then Sean's confusion and refusal to accept when shit unravels is just devastating. It's what I live for.

Tale of Thousand Stars - What makes this one extra devastating is that we the audience can see the full picture. The villagers only know what Tian tells them, and Tian's own perspective is clouded by survivor's guilt. So while we can see where everyone is coming from, it's clear that Tian doesn't deserve the punishment that's being piled on him.

Unintentional Love Story - There is a manhwa and a K-drama adaptation, but I'm talking specifically about the manhwa. The dynamic between the leads is so cute, it's almost like the author is trying to make you forget the relationship was built on a lie. Until, of course, it all comes crumbling down.

Third Act Breakup. I know, everyone hates this trope. But something you should know about me is that when I get into a story, I want it to ruin my life. Okay, not really, but I might like angst a little too much. I find it extremely cathartic to experience heartache vicariously through fictional characters. Admittedly, this trope often relies on characters acting in ways that don't make sense. But when it works, it works.

Blueming - The simplicity of Blueming is what makes it beautiful, and that includes the breakup. It's not some convoluted drama or people acting out of character, just humans making human mistakes and needing time to reflect on them.

Dark Blue Kiss - Speaking of convoluted drama. I can't even defend myself on this one.

Last Twilight - Oh god, this is gonna be my most controversial pick. I liked the breakup scene in Last Twilight. It was gut-wrenching, but it felt necessary. Like, they both needed time apart in order to grow independently. I mean, they kind of squandered that opportunity for growth, but we're not here to talk about episode 12.

Unrequited Love Reversal. There is just something so satisfying about watching the pursuer become the pursued. The character who initially took the other's love for granted suddenly has to work to get it back. I think it's a wish fulfillment thing. It's probably unhealthy how much I like this trope.

The Best Smell - This manhwa is kind of a hard sell, but trust me, it's so good. It's about a boy named Kanggo whose sense of smell is so powerful, he can smell emotions. He despises the smell of lies, so he initially hates Kamin, who is very withdrawn and secretive. But Kamin has a secret crush on Kanggo, and his affection smells so sweet, that Kanggo starts to do anything to be near Kamin. But the closer Kanggo tries to get to him, the more Kamin's guard goes up.

The Third Ending - The first season, specifically, because I didn't like the second season. Yoonseul reconnects with Jun, a guy he rejected in high school, believing it will fix his karma. When the two become closer, Yoonseul becomes confused about his feelings for Jun. After rejecting him for the second time, Jun pulls away, and Yoonseul realizes too late that he's fallen for Jun.

A Shoulder to Cry On - Specifically the manhwa. While I thought the drama was a pretty good adaptation, my favorite scene played out much more satisfyingly in the manhwa. After rejecting Dayeol and pushing him away, Taehyun regrets his decision and tries to make up with him. But Dayeol decides his life is easier without Taehyun in it, and he tells him, "I can handle my feelings for you, but I don't think I can handle you." And it's on their graduation day, so he just straight disappears from his life after that.

2. I first started reading manhwa in 2020 when I was in quarantine and needed a distraction. I'd been reading Haikyuu or something, and someone on YouTube recommended Someone Else's BL Manhwa. I instantly fell in love with it and to this day it's still my favorite BL manhwa.

I transitioned to dramas when I watched Blueming, which is one of the few k-drama adaptations that I thought was much better than the manhwa it was based on.

Aside from those two, a BL that holds a special place in my heart is Bad Buddy. It was the one that started my great GMMTV binge-watch, and I've watched it three times since then. It's my comfort watch.

3. I don't really like the seme/uke labels, but I can just tell you some of my favorite BL main characters.

I tend to be drawn to two kinds of characters. The first are those who are not very smart, but very passionate and sincere.

Gun - My School President

Heesu - Heesu in Class 2

The second are those who are stubborn and kind of bratty. Even better if they're only bratty to the love interest, because that's good stuff.

Seunghee - Someone Else's BL

Team - Between Us (Between Us wasn't very good, but Team can stay. And no, I haven't watched UWMA.)

Day - Last Twilight

Horror recommendations from someone formerly too afraid to enjoy the genre

I spent almost my entire childhood too chicken to watch scary movies, only occasionally trying to brave and get through one here and there. I lost countless hours of sleep over trailers I'd seen on tv for various horror movies, which then went on to shape the nature of my fears--and nightmares--for the rest of my life. But in my late teens I decided to try and conquer my fears by facing the genre head on, and in the process... it actually became my favorite genre.

If you're scared but want to jump in, this is my gift to you, as someone who used to be in your shoes. This list is broken down based on the kind of experience you're looking for, so you can get your feet wet on your own terms. It's not that these movies aren't scary (scary is subjective, after all!), it's that this way you can at least know the general vibe first.

Disclaimer #1: Horror tends to be absolutely teeming with common triggers, so much so that I don't trust myself to individually warn for each item on the list. I suggest using a site like Does the Dog Die? or similar registries to look up anything you might need to filter out. Assume death and violence to be a common theme here. Disclaimer #2: This list is far from perfect. Please don't come into my inbox saying "but what about [insert movie here]?"...

Emotional

If wanting to connect to characters and their situations is a big priority, and you're tired of ye olde "one dimensional teens on summer vacation get picked off one by one" vibes from movies you've considered, here are some deeper, heavier options.

Before I Wake: A couple adopts a child who has been in and out of homes, only to discover the reason why no one will keep him is because he has the ability to physically manifest his dreams as he sleeps... and often has recurring nightmares about a horrible, menacing creature. This movie is an excellent take on the tough issue of how adoption means shouldering a child's baggage, and how difficult that can be, even when you want the best for them.

The Monster: On a long drive through a fairly remote stretch of road, a young mother and her daughter have to deal with both the figurative monster that is the strain on their relationship and the much more literal monster that is the thing hunting them in the woods. For being relatively straightforward in plot, this movie does a lot to tug at the heartstrings.

Train to Busan: A man's train ride to take his small daughter to visit her mother goes south fast when a zombie outbreak hits. Zombie movies aren't for everyone, but even as someone with mixed feelings on the genre, I consider this a must-see that balances drama, action, and fear amazingly well.

Fun

Every horror fan has a different definition of what a "fun" horror movie is, but hopefully you can see eye to eye with me on these movies being a good, entertaining ride.

Nope: Following their father's death, a brother and sister investigate the perplexing occurrences plaguing their family farm. One of my top "go in blind" recs. The less you know, the better. It manages to balance fear and humor while also being a fresh take on a classic concept.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark: A group of friends find a book of scary stories, one that's all fun and games until their own names start popping up in the tales. Whether you read the book or not as a kid (which I didn't), this one is incredibly nostalgic. It feels like it belongs at a sleepover, or perhaps retold around a campfire. Perfect viewing for a Halloween party!

Malignant: Surrounded by mysterious deaths, a woman can't help but suspect her childhood imaginary friend may be the one responsible. A fantastic example of a movie where the creep factor is unique and well thought out while also being fun in an almost absurd way.

Unsettling

Sometimes, instead of being outright terrifying, you want a movie that makes you go "hey, what the fuck?"

The Boy: To get away from her own troubles, a young woman accepts a nanny job with strict rules while the parents leave on holiday... only to discover right away that the "child" she must watch is actually a doll. This movie is creepy, subtle, and keeps you guessing. Honestly, it's a great first horror movie if you're looking for something iconic but not so classic you already know the whole plot.

Oculus: A young woman manages to track down the haunted mirror she blames for destroying her family's lives many years ago, and she intends to prove that supernatural forces are behind it all. This remains one of the most interesting horror movies I've watched, combining past childhood terror with an investigative spirit in the present as it jumps back and forth in the story.

Savageland: This mockumentary the trial of a man charged with slaughtering an entire small town because he walked away the lone survivor. Another "go in blind" rec, and honestly a hidden gem. The reflective tone of looking back on the events creates a sense of safety for the viewer, and yet, watching the mystery unfold is positively chilling.

In the Tall Grass: In an attempt to help a boy they spotted from the side of the road, two siblings enter a disorienting field of tall grass. Arguably a bit more "advanced" in its creepiness than others in this category, but I feel like I'd be amiss not to include at least one Stephen King adaptation, and this one makes the cut by not bearing as much pop culture baggage as his better known works.

It's Not That Deep

If you don't want a heavy, involved plot, and would rather focus on the scares, then these movies have you covered!

Sweetheart: A young woman shipwrecked on an island must survive not only the wilderness itself, but the strange beast that wanders onto land at night looking for a snack. If the first episode of Lost set your hopes high for a more creature feature vibe, then this movie will scratch that itch nicely.

Dark Skies: After repeated unexplained occurrences in their home, a family begins to accept that their problem may be extraterrestrial in nature. A fantastic and spooky alien horror flick for both UFO buffs and casual viewers alike.

Willow Creek: While filming a small documentary about the famous Patterson-Gimlin bigfoot film, a couple realizes they aren't alone as they try to reach the site of the film itself. As silly as it starts off, this one captures the simple but powerful fear of not being alone in the woods at night, and is to bigfoot what Dark Skies is to aliens; perfect for both cryptid fanatics and those unfamiliar. Also, it made me hate sleeping in tents even more than I already did.

Staples of the genre

Popular movies are popular for a reason. Here are some ones you've undoubtedly heard of (and maybe even seen parodies of) but get a spot on this post because they're Just That Good. No plot summaries on these, as you likely already know more about them than I could say in any brief description. Just pure opinion from here on!

Ringu/The Ring: Whether watching the original or the American version, this one is a must. I say this despite it being the movie with the trailer that scared--and scarred--me the most as a kid. Onryo are among my worst fears now. Enjoy!

Paranormal Activity: Despite people making fun of it, this one (and its sequels) actually makes amazing use of subtle-but-realistic effects. When I finally watched it, I was shocked by how simple yet high quality it was. I think everyone should watch this at least once.

The Woman in Black: One of my first serious attempts at getting into horror. It's everything you could ask for out of a haunted house movie, hitting all the classic elements without feeling too predictable.

The Blair Witch Project: You know this one. Everyone knows this one. It was THE genre defining found footage movie, so go watch it!

The Conjuring: Yet another great haunted house movie, and one that scratches that "based on a true story" itch to boot! The trailer for this one also scared the snot out of me, except that I was already an adult (I think?) by then. Somehow, it's practically an old friend to me.

Midsommar: As much as this one dealt a devastating blow to critical thinking (particularly of white women), it really is a good movie. Just... please try not to miss the point.

The Ritual: Okay, not quite as iconic as the others in this section, but any creature design fanatic can tell you that this one holds a special place in the hearts of many horror fans. No, it's not one that anybody and everybody has heard of, but it's very well known inside the broader horror fandom.

...And that's it for now! I might edit it to include some others, though, since I had to leave tons of ones I dearly love out, and my willpower to resist mentioning them is not strong.

Girl, I love your blog and your smart replies💕 That’s why I wanna know your opinion about the topic Evan and his relationships. Don’t you think he might be toxic too? Let me clarify: We all assume that Evan is the good, sweet, introverted guy looking for a serious relationship with a good woman but unfortunately he always ends up with someone evil and toxic. But I can’t believe he never met at least one good woman in his entire life, someone he could have a healthy relationship with. For this reason I’m quite sure he’s only looking for women like Emma before and like Frances nowadays cause he loves the thrill of the toxic bond. Someone healthy in my opinion even bores him. This entire dynamic is not only toxic but also dangerous especially since he is no longer a baby boy but a 36 year old grown man and break this toxic cycle could be very difficult. It’s like he’s destined only for this type of relationship (even in the workplace, see for example his relation with Ryan Murphy). I feel bad for him and only by working on himself he can possibly change his situation. Sorry for the long message but I wanted express my opinion☺️

i do feel like the situation isn't black and white like it can sometimes appear on the outside looking in. and what i mean by that is: publicly, evan has a good reputation - we don't get reports of him exhibiting bad behavior on set (minus the fighting with emma during ahs but even that was minimally reported), in hollywood, or from anyone close to him who has spoken out in the media. no diva behavior or abusive tendencies. by contrast, there is lots of public information available about some of the women he's seriously dated that would lead us to believe they are a problem. note i said a problem, not the problem. chaos can't thrive in a relationship without two willing parties who partake. even if we were to believe evan was never in the wrong (which is impossible, he is human and he is a man, ahem) there's still something to be said about a man who is in his late 30s with so many failed relationships with women who had obvious problems. again, as someone who doesn't know evan personally, if i had to throw out some reasons that i think he has not been lucky in love, i would list off poor self-esteem, self-doubt, substance abuse problems (hopefully resolved) and far too high a tolerance for drama. he has stayed with women who cheated (emma), beat him (emma) and used him for money/clout (frances) to name some of the bigger offenses. and i fully believe he feels indebted to ryan murphy for jumpstarting his career and would have a very hard time telling him no. evan doesn't believe in himself as an actor and i think he feels stable employment with ryan is a necessity, even when the types of roles he's receiving drain him mentally and emotionally and have pigeonholed him to a certain degree.

i agree that he's doomed to keep repeating these types of romances until he addresses his own personal issues. people who have toxic relationship after toxic relationship are absolutely addicted to it and feel insecure in healthy ones. if he ran into a successful, beautiful, stable woman in her 30s he would probably feel deeply insecure to pursue something with her because, in my humble observation, he has a low opinion of himself and by his own admission suffers from imposter syndrome. it's easier to date a 20-something onlyfans model who had a teenage crush on you, is likely impressed by your career and net worth, and will keep your ego boosted so long as you're spoiling her.

one thing i really loved about it is that so often when we have characters with shitty family backstories (canon or fanon), their partner ends up going off on said family. like so many fics where Alex goes batshit on Maggie's family, in a Sanvers example. honestly i wrote one of those! but my wife's parents are really complicated and we don't like her dad's new extremely young wife, but i'm never going to yell at him about it. i'm going to sit there at dinner across the table from him and send my wife supportive looks and hold her hand and make her tea afterwards and talk about it as much or as little as she wants to. that's part of partnership, that you shoulder those burdens with them, or for them, that you say "i'm going to be by your side at every awkward or uncomfortable family dinner because you're mine and you'll feel a little better with me next to you." that vibe isn't sexy or dramatic, but there's so much tenderness in it, and i really loved that we got to see both Lucy and Kate develop that together in this fic. the ways they got to learn how to sit with each other during things that are hard, that all the awkward shit is better with your partner there next to you.

blah blah blah, this is a long way of saying it does what a great fic can do, which is explore the deepening of a relationship without high drama or deathbed confessions or melodrama--just through dinners and thanksgivings and working late and actual life. sounds boring but the fic was gripping and that's exactly what fic can do.

i also loved it, and then i'll shut up, because this is what books can't really do--they won't publish something this quiet, something that is explicitly about reducing tension instead of increasing it. that makes it so nice and gentle to read, and i've been reading and writing things with so much more tension, so this felt so relaxing and safe without being boring or trite.

so, in summary, i liked it!

goooood afternoon. I spent 7:30-12:30 drafting this program proposal for my boss, which was a ton of work but also means I can take most of Friday off for the wedding without using vacation time whoohoo. I had another frustrating meeting with her last week and am still steaming about it a little… I am going to refrain from delving into work drama in my public diary but hoo boy life is just offering me so many illuminating examples of Different Management Styles this year lol. I can feel my blood pressure spiking just thinking about it so I am going to SET THAT ASIDE and try to switch now into relaxing/recharging mode. this week is going to be my personal hell (3 days of high energy interactive conference programming from 8am-5pm with an hourlong commute in rush hour traffic on both ends) but I am going to try my best to approach it with calm resignation rather than active full-body dread. hoooo boy. relax recharge recuperate jes do not think about what lies ahead!!!!

mmkay I have ~6 hours before possible goodbye dinner with bec tonight. I think I am going to eat leftovers for lunch, read fic in bed for a bit, and then haul myself up around 2pm to do a long walk with the dogs. these poor critters have been so underwalked the past two weeks with so many guests in and out!! mm maybe we will drive to the first trail then walk through the neighborhood to connect with the larger trail system. I’d like to try to walk for an hour as I am also very underwalked lately lol. also my body kinda feels like crap after eating badly and drinking too much yesterday… I really don’t want to drink a ton at the wedding this weekend but am not very good at moderating my alcohol intake in social settings esp with grad school pals. bleh we’ll see. maybe reading a lot about the impact of alcohol on fertility before will help me resist the sense of social pressure lol.

ok ok. lunch! reading! long walk! lie around some more or maybe go grab soil and repot these plants! shower by 4:30/5ish for possible dinner plans! try not to fall into a despair about the long & trying week ahead!

The only problem is that the boy in question ran from home in the middle of the war. Otto grabbed his bags and set out on a very dangerous and seemingly pointless journey, but he always believed he would find his son again ons day. He endured a lot of hardship and even physical injuries, but he didn't lose hope or faith, and after years, he finally saw his son again (now almost 20).

Ainārs

(The Land of Eternal Winter - 2019-2020)

Role: side character

He is a teen orphan who never got adopted, și he decided to get a grown up occupation sooner, thus joining the revolution. He befriends Melanija, who's his age. He manages to keep up with the others, until his pretending to be more grown up than he is gets him into extremely reckless and dangerous situations, leaving permanent damage. He ends up wishing he had stayed a child, but it's too late.

Lev is a very bright chemistry student. He has the time of his life in college, making close friendships (and meeting the love of his life, Alyona), but the fairy tale is cut short with the announcement of WW2. He goes to war, but Alyona, how his wife, volunteers to join the war, just to stay with him (she's now a medic, being a medicine graduate). Lev's best friend is Zephyr, an uptight straight A student who learned to loosen up thanks to him.

The found family vibes are strong with this one. At some point they find a teen boy who was pretending to be 18 and they all but adopt him. The story has many very dramatic and heart wrenching moments, but also many heartwarming moments. For example, at the end, the boy is finally reunited with his father. It's not a very mature or that logical of a story, but it's my first "masterpiece", and I still find it very beautiful, especially the characters (they all love each other so much!!!).

(I changed the names and details for the purpose of this poll because there were some things that were just plain inaccurate or just that I changed after having finished the novel).

The Land of Eternal Winter - 2019-2020

Genre: mild steampunk, kinda post apoc but mostly drama (and court drama)

Anatoliy is a prince whose beloved father just died, so he assumes it was an assassination. He suspects the neighbouring king and has him killed, only to later realise he was innocent. He is almost completely overcome by guilt and despair, but ultimately fights to do whatever in his power to not only fix the consequences of his crime, but to also mitigate the effects of the much larger conspiracy at work that he found himself an unwitting pawn in. There are very many side characters, each with their own complex stories, which all tie into the idea that ones desire to change the world may be futile, or even become evil, but we must still strive to do good here on earth despite no rewards in sight. I'd say this is my 2nd "masterpiece" work in terms of writing

Oh jesus christ. Okay let’s see, I’ll try to be as brief as possible.

1. I guess I just wrote what I would like to read. Back in october, there weren't any Aegon fics (mostly Aemond x niece/sister), and I thought I would be happy writing for us Aegon enthusiasts since there was too much hate around.

2. The first scene I wrote was teenage Aegon meeting teenage Annika (with some Rhys foreshadowing as well), but at the last minute I decided I didn’t want them to be familiar with each other or have any preconceptions when they got married, so I went for the original prologue.

3. Annika in Rhaenyra’s court, 100%. I adore her entire internal struggle and the person she’s becoming.

4. Ughh either the “your love is a curse” “then you must be a curse breaker” bit or the “hair grows back, your dead children don’t”.

5. You know what, I have the hardest time writing happy/fluffy moments, like grief comes naturally but the entire love plot I tend to overthink it a lot because I don't want to make it cheesy, and to be honest, I don't think I'm very good at it. Lately, though, it's the entire war plot that's getting on my last nerve.

6. Definitely the fact that I've never gotten this far with any of my other works. I'm so committed to it and to the characters that I don't know what I'm going to do once it's finished.

7. I think it was that the 1975 song happiness one of my friends kept singing and it stuck with me for WEEKS, then I had an epiphany while listening to cowboy like me by taylor swift and here we are.

8. There’s a lot of me in Annika and there’s a lot of my trauma and my love and my friends and my life but no one is inspired in no one.

9. Never. A drama queen with intimacy issues and a pathetic wimpy mess full of rage were my ride or die since day one.

10. I wanted to write something real and raw, someone who unapologetically made mistakes, and my boy failure Aegon was a perfect match for it. Besides I feel like all of you just… Get it in the way I wanted you to get it. It wouldn’t work if Annika was paired with Aemond for example. It had to be them.

11. The family dynamics. I love the fact that the green brothers found not just love but a real family with the girls. They might have their differences, but at the end of the day, they're all they have.

12. That I put on a lot of detail and made it too complicated and sometimes it’s hard to keep up.

13. I don’t think is just one in particular but a bunch of sad indie songs glued together. I’m gonna make a playlist someday.

14. Oh it actually terrifies me that someone might learn something from this flawed story but I guess that’s a good point, that you’re valid and deserving of love no matter how much you believe otherwise.

Sora: HaHa~♪ Master~ is good at socialising with others~ You can get along with basically anyone?

Natsume: I’m a fortune teller, after aLL. Rather than getting along with everyoNE, I suppose it would be more accurate to say I weave out the story everyone wants to see while watching from high aboVE.

I do this by saying the things they want me to say and making their wishes come trUE.

It’s too late before they realise they’ve been swayed by mE.

NO. They’ve become a part that is essential in building the utopia I wish fOR.

I don’t mind not being the protagoniST. I don’t have what it takes, anywAY. I don’t have to win every time and the world doesn’t have to revolve around mE.

I’ll control all the protagonists – all the heroes – like pawNS and then paint the world in our preferred colouRS.

Sora: HiHi~♪ Master~ you sound like Satan.

Natsume: I am trying to be careful so that I don’t make others hate me and put me doWN.

I’ve seen a few “failed examples” of happiness and unhappiness alreaDY. I plan on watching where it’s leaning towards first and then take the appropriate measurES.

I really have kept you waiting for a long tiME, Sora. But there’s no need to worRY – All the annoying things will be cleaned up very soON.

The thing we’ve been preparing all this time at Yumenosaki Academy and ES will finally bear fruIT.

Firstly, the “Five Oddballs” from Yumenosaki Academy will be left under my managemeNT. I didn’t do it by throwing punches at all the students or brainwashing thEM.

There’s no point in collecting a large number of slaves or dolls, after aLL.

What I bestowed upon the students of Yumenosaki is A “story”.

It’s a classic story of hard work, friendship and victoRY. You shouldn’t make fun of it just because it’s both a classic and a fairytaLE.

The truth of this world is hidden in stories that have been passed down from ancient timES.

Boys learn one thing in life – not from his parents or educatiON – but through fairytales and tokusatsu[*] TV shoWS. And that “story” is “just for uS”.

“That’s” what we’ve prepared for thEM.

Sora: HuHu~? What do you mean?

Natsume: RigHT. First, we’ll have most of the current students in the Yumenosaki idol course become members of the strongest units in the schoOL – That means being a member of “Knights” or “RYUUSEITAI”.

Unfortunately, “RYUUSEITAI” is a mess at the momeNT…

It looks like “Switch” or the “producer course” will have to pick the ones that are left out, thouGH.

…It indeed works out perfectly for both me and that rotten heretIC, but I have a feeling it’s all working out exactly how he wanted it to – including “RYUUSEITAI’s” current circumstancES.

Sora: He? Who’s the rotten heretic?

Natsume: There’s no one else like him when it comes to spreading conspiraciES – I’m talking about a certain “Emperor” who has no intention of stepping down from his throNE.

He’s made excusES, saying that he’s hospitalised so he can’t move around so muCH, but it’s very suspicioUS…

It’s not as if he was unconscious or anythiNG, so at the very leaST, I presume he should know what the current situation is like and is simply choosing not to do anythiNG.

Based on solely the resulTS, “RYUUSEITAI” will be left with the best members and it’ll be the best turn of events…

The kids who end up being left behind would fall under the jurisdiction of StarPro or tHE “producer course”.

It’ll probably be good for the future of the “producer course” if they gain some EXP by taking care of new idoLS.

And for StarPro, they’ll gain a stronger voice within Yumenosaki while also reaping in the benefiTS. It just sounds really good for them, doesn’t IT?

The “Emperor” can also make an excuse by saying he was hospitalised so he couldn’t save anyoNE. No one will resent him and instead, he can gain a huge profIT.

Sora: Hmm? He can’t do anything while he’s hospitalised, so Sora thinks he’s missing out as an idol, though?

Natsume: YeAH. Well, I suppose you could say this is all merely my speculations and me reading too much into thinGS.

The “Emperor” simply observed the situation and made the best move he couLD.

Rather than ending everything and wrapping up the tragedy with unhappineSS, he must have wanted to obtain as much profit as he possibly couLD. It’s like dealing with deBT.

While I am not into Robcina at all (I am rather neutral towards it) I kind of understand why some people though Instys was pushing it. Their support convos is solid, their S support doesnt feel rushed and is kinda cute, their interactions shows that they work as a couple. But that asides I never thought once it was canon since the only relevance it has is to obtain a monstruous Morgan and unlock all the S support of the games. Oh, and if you like Lucina enough to marry her. I forgot about that.

I agree it works fine if you only go by the support convos but there's a plot on top of it. Which is, as much as I've seen "FE is lately making Robin too dependent on Chrom" complaining, that's the plot. The plot of Awakening is how Robin's bond with Chrom changes fate and saves not just his life but the world. It's a cheesy ass anime plot. Lucina could have killed him and was ready to but Chrom steps in and stops her because he trusts Robin that much. So I don't really understand the complaints they're focusing too much on Robin and Chrom lately, did we observe the same game???

Anyway Robin and Lucina was never pushed, because once Awakening was done and FE blew up it was never mentioned again and no "Lucina I hope I didn't hurt you" from Smash doesn't count. That's Robin's character, he's a good boy and Lucina and him are from the same game. Female Robin "How can you protect Chrom if you can't protect yourself" is much harsher but if anything it was a small reference to the male and female avatars having slightly different personalities, (to this day they're the most varied) If they were gonna touch on it they could have in the drama CD but they didn't because in the context of canon Awakening with Robin as his own character it makes no sense. It's just fanservice. Most of the ships are as tend to be in a marry anyone format but that one really butts heads with the canon. Which is why I think they never referenced it again. If Awakening gets remade of course they'll keep it, they have no reason not to but in everything else? Not a thing.

It's also hilarious that we went from "I'll kill you to prevent my fathers murder." To "I feel self conscious fighting my father's other half!" Girl you were ready to kill him in your own game don't give me that.

But that's another example of how evolution happened over time

A vent piece. Hoooo boy, where do I even begin... The years haven't been kind to me. (Or to the very few I love and trust, honestly). Especially mid to late 2022 and even the beginning of 2023. From Covid, breaking my ankle, undergoing surgery to fix said ankle... it's been hell. Yet, my friends- or, those I thought were my friends, being there helped me through it all. Now, I didn't have many people I trust to begin with, but I did have a small handful- albeit our communication tended to be on-and off. Yet, I had known most of them for, well- a decade. Not gonna say any names or list everything I went through with these people, but they all used to mean a lot to me- yet they've since revealed their true colors... They all didn't care about me... they only used me for, example; clout, to blatantly copy off me plus my bf's designs w/o credit, tried using me to fulfill their twisted fantasies, misgendered me, recorded me w/o my permission, put me/my art down, ignored/disrespected me and/or my boyfriend almost on the daily, flirted with me despite being taken, and/or used me for my art (even ignoring me unless I drew them something) among many, many other things... One of them even told me straight to my face that they only became 'friends' with me all those years ago because they wanted art from me. ... and, proceeded to throw me away after treating me and even my boyfriend like garbage because I wouldn't blindly side with them when they were the one in the wrong, claiming to be the victim when they were the toxic, manipulative one- even complaining to me when my boyfriend vented about the situation and claiming he made it 'public' when, in reality, it was all private and only him, myself, and another mutual of my boyfriend's could see it. They even got as petty as copying our art, breaking numerous rules of my T.O.S, and being outright offensive to the LGBTQ+... likely just to spite us. Some of the other 'friends'? Well... besides exhibiting rude behavior (most I already mentioned), let's just say they revealed they were were into illegal things- underage things. Sometimes even deceased underage things. Along with drawing such things along with de-aging characters and proceeding to draw... well, you get the point. Another even enabling and defending some of this friend's creepy/rude behavior (some things including recording me/others without consent, creepily flirting with me, ignoring me unless I made gift art, acting passive aggressive especially when confronted, and many more crappy things) and attempting to defend at-length about why being into such sick things is 'okay'; how 'morality is a social construct and the only real thing in the way is the law'... To me. A CSA survivor. Yeah. I just wished I realized how little I mattered to these 'friends', especially with being made aware of those who had nasty interests, way sooner. Besides everything that's happened though... so far 2023 has, thankfully, has been great so far, and I'm hoping it stays that way. I've had enough of drama and being used, and only wish to live my life with my amazing and supportive boyfriend veevee-8283 that I love so very much. He's stuck by me thru all of these awful times, and is someone I couldn't imagine living without. And thanks anyone who took the time out of your probably busy day to read me ramble about all this waaaa

Most of my ships are gay not because I prefer to ship gay ships. I actually don’t care if the ship is gay or straight as long as there is chemistry and a solid, good story there.

It’s just that straight ships have gotten frustratingly boring, predictable, and just plain bland. There is nothing there for me to work with. I feel like the only conflict between straight, canon straight ships lately is the overused love triangle trope. That’s just not good enough when usually the foundation to these ships is also weak and unstable/not solid enough for me to root for these characters or even care.

Gay ships just have so much more conflict going in, more chemistry, more intense and interesting stories going for them, and infinitely more material to build a solid foundation for the relationship in a satisfying and believable way, than any straight ships.

I don’t know if you get what I mean. I think the writing for het ships has gotten way too lazy. Because as long as the characters are opposite genders I guess the audience will expect them to get together, so there is very little effort and passion being put into these relationships. They are just bland af. There are no meaningful conflicts, no meaningful connection and development either.

The bar is just so low, too; straight ships are kissing after only one or two interactions in an entire season of a show. Or by the end of the movie when there has been literally no build-up to that moment at all; it’s just expected because one is a boy and the other is a girl.

Where is the drama? Where is the juicy conflict that makes a story work well? In a freaking love triangle with a few misunderstandings and a lot of bickering/plain fighting each other with no meaningful moments in between? Where is the devotion? The passion? The pining? The love? The drive to do anything for that person? Where is the soul connection? The actual attraction and chemistry (literally I don’t even feel these straight ships have chemistry anymore. I wish I was kidding but have you seen the canon straight couples on TV lately? Literally the exceptions could be counted in one hand...)

Where is the good, meaningful, beautiful, heart-wrenching, soul touching story?

Usually reserved for male x male friendships. That’s it.

This is why.

Male characters are also written infinitely better than female characters and their arcs are well-defined and carefully written; these are usually well developed, well-written characters, whereas female characters usually lack any character development and exist as love interests with zero personality. I’ve said this a million times: being hot is not a personality.

Male x male friendships are often beautifully written, with so much heart, of course anyone with a love for well crafted stories, who is starved of a beautiful love story, will expect something more to come out of these fictional soulmates. Here you have a character who is clearly pining over their “friend” when things aren’t going so well; a character would do anything for their friend and who has always been there for them; a character who will forgiven them and understand them when they’ve made a mistake.

A friend, a soulmate; someone who truly cares about this character like literally no other character in the story.

Usually these friendships are so solid and meaningful, that nothing will break them apart; not even their own realistically unforgivable mistakes like Eli breaking Demetri’s arm in Cobra Kai, or Castiel messing with Sam’s mind in Supernatural, when Sam is Dean’s most important person in his life and wouldn’t forgive something like that if any other character would have done it, for example because these two forgive each other, because these two love each other.

These two will work through unimaginable forces and unsurmountable obstacles that want to tear them apart, and they will walk through these obstacles to find their way back to each other, no matter how big or how terrible the rift between them, because their friendship is that meaningful, because they love each other.

The problem is that this “love” is never defined as more than platonic love. The problem also is that, if these relationships happened between a woman and a man, these relationships would have been canon with waaay less story to feed the canon. Everyone would expect something romantic to come out of it.

Of course we want a relationship like that to have a payoff with a kiss onscreen or a confirmation of that love as romantic love, because it would make perfect sense, and it would be satisfying to the story that was told between these characters. There is substance to these relationships, in contrast to the “straight boy meets hot straight girl he has literally no connection to/nothing in common with besides being protagonists or funny side characters in a show/movie, they flirt, they get together, there is a love triangle, they fight and split, misunderstandings, and now they kiss and make up, roll the credits”.

When the bar is so ridiculously low for heterosexual romance, and heterosexual love stories have become so incredibly boring and predictable, we crave something more. Something with substance, and that is what gay ships usually give the audience. But it’s frustrating, because despite being so interesting and full of story as they are, gay ships usually don’t end up being even acknowledge beyond fanservice and/or queerbaiting for ratings (because they KNOW people want this).

We are all bored of bland het romances telling the same story over and over. Gay ships (and not just male/male ships, but also any queer ships) are so much more interesting but they just aren’t given a chance...

BnHA Chapter 302: As the Todoroki Turns

Previously on BnHA:

Today on BnHA: We have a very fun chapter in which (1) Shouto grows up lonely on account of his parents being worried that his siblings will literally try to kill him, (2) Natsu and Fuyu grow up neglected on account of not being special and/or self-destructive enough to attract attention, (3) we get to revisit all of that exciting spousal abuse from chapter 39, and (4) Touya burns to death right on cue, pretty much exactly like we expected it to happen. Thankfully since this is a shounen manga, Horikoshi finds some hope in all this misery as the Todoroki family rallies together, with Shouto getting his long-overdue credit for being a perfect sweet angel who put up with all of this shit for sixteen years and somehow came out of it strong and kind and empathetic and determined. Anyway, so that flashback was a barrel of laughs. But now that it’s over, we can put all of that angst behind us, and move on to... well I guess, probably, more angst. Look, we’re short on variety at the moment. Bear with it.

A+ parenting move there. “ho boy, our eldest just tried to murder our youngest, now what? hmm how about we isolate our youngest from all human contact”

though in their defense, we probably shouldn’t have expected this rabidly strength-obsessed fire man and his wife who was groomed since childhood to obey her family’s whims to have any idea of how to raise stable, well-adjusted offspring

SERIOUSLY YOU GUYS

this is a perfect example of Enji’s tragically self-revolving viewpoint right here. just because being a hero is your entire world doesn’t mean you can just excuse yourself from anything outside of that and act like it’s out of your control. “alas, all I care about is hero stuff and my son can’t be a hero, we are doomed to inhabit two different worlds” no you jackass, it’s called having more than one hobby?? figuring out how to spend some time with your son that doesn’t involve training?? the same exact thing you were telling him to do last week, while ignoring that you’ve never done that yourself in your life??

that said, yet again we have that complexity though because it’s obvious that Enji at least on some level is aware of his own flaws, even though he seems unwilling or unable to confront them. honestly, from what we’ve seen so far, Enji’s obsession with surpassing All Might might be more accurately called an addiction. he literally can’t let go of it even though he’s fully aware of how it’s slowly destroying his life. and so in the same way that a lifelong smoker or alcoholic might tell their child to stay away from cigarettes and booze, Enji tells Touya not to follow down the same path as him, even though he himself doesn’t know how to leave that path. so yes, it’s hypocritical as fuck, but there’s also an element of helplessness there as well because Enji literally doesn’t know how not to be like this

though all the same he sure could stand to put in more than just a token effort. but it is what it is, and we already know how much he’ll come to regret it

and meanwhile Baby Shouto has frozen his sleep bubble with his quirk lmao. so I guess his quirk did come in early. that’s a recipe for chaos right there

once again Shouto is ruining every single dramatic panel in this flashback

this was so dark and intense... and then I spotted the lil bubs in the corner. Horikoshi please control yourself

“some hero you are, running away” and then all of a sudden, “FIVE YEARS LATER” lol what. OKAY THEN

(ETA: love the confirmation that eight-year-old Natsu comes from the Iida school of puberty and is basically a fully grown man, and meanwhile Touya comes from the hobbit school of puberty and has been perpetually eight for the past five years.)

“HEY BIG BRO WANNA COME RECREATE AN ICONIC FLASHBACK SCENE WITH US. WE’VE GOT THE SOCCER BALL RIGHT HERE, BUT HURRY UP OR WE’LL BE TOO LATE FOR SHOUTO TO WALK ON BY AND STOP TO LOOK”

lol and that’s literally the next three panels. but Horikoshi did add this extra bit after Endeavor starts to drag Shouto away

seriously Enji what the hell did you expect was going to happen here. “Touya went nuts and tried to kill his little brother out of jealousy, so let’s make it clearer than ever that Shouto is the important child and all the other children are just rejects. this will definitely not make the problem 100x worse, and will surely lead to Touya giving up and living a happy life, having been emotionally abandoned by the person he admired more than anyone.” good for you pal you figured it all out. no need for that plan b, “we all just go to therapy”

anyway so he’s telling Shouto he can’t play because he needs more endurance training. and meanwhile Touya’s patented Todoroki Drama Genes are going through puberty as well

definitely the face of a happy, emotionally stable child who’s not still plotting to murder his younger brother in his sleep

apparently during the five year interim Touya actually stopped blaming Shouto and realized Enji was the one at fault. good for him! a bit inconsistent, given what we know happens later, but I assume we’ll get to that in good time

anyway. “yeah man I agree that dad sucks, but it’s the middle of the night and I’m only eight and you’ve been monologuing for the past two hours bro”

looks like someone’s still miffed about that disagreement he had with his baby sister back when she was like four

“Fuyu doesn’t get properly riled up like I want her to so ranting to her is annoying.” okay but having been in Fuyu’s shoes, it really is just a different way of coping, and I can guarantee she’s not as fine with the whole situation as Touya might think. but making your peace with something is often a decision that’s made for emotional self-preservation reasons. and I sure as hell don’t fault her for trying to shut out a situation that she had no control over, and trying to make the best of it, and scrape together as normal a childhood as she could manage

and now in Touya’s defense as well, that is of course easier said than done, and I’m sure if there was a “push this button and instantly get over all of the trauma in your life” switch readily available for Touya then he would have pushed it too. unfortunately it’s not always that simple

so now Rei is pleading with Touya not to go train up on his little emo hill again, but it doesn’t seem like much has changed since he was eight

I don’t think he gives two figs about being a hero; he just wants his father to look at him again with pride. fucking hell, stop doing this to me you damn Todorokis

guh, they keep telling him the same thing over and over again

even if we hadn’t already known he was gonna go melt his jawbone off soon, I wouldn’t have expected a line like that to go over well

that Todoroki puberty angst, though. nothing else quite like it

okay but look, he’s not entirely wrong. like, I’m not saying any of this is Rei’s fault at all! she’s in an impossible situation where she’s afraid to stand up to Enji (who by this point has shown that he’s willing to physically attack her if things get too heated, which is terrifying), and doesn’t really have anywhere to turn for support. her parents aren’t helping much if at all, and Japan in general is just a terrible country to be in when you’re in a domestic abuse situation. everyone’s expected to put on a brave face and deal with their problems all on their own in private. Rei is basically completely isolated at this point, and she doesn’t know what else to do, and so she’s just trying to keep the situation as stable as possible for the kids

but on the other hand, “for the kids” is also where that argument starts to break down a bit, because at this point Shouto is also being physically abused by his father, and the other kids are continuing to be neglected (emotionally if not physically), as they have been for years. so the situation really isn’t stable at all for them. and as a kid, what you end up learning in that type of situation is that you can’t rely on either parent. not the abusive one, certainly, but also not the other one who can’t protect you from any of it. even if they love you and they’re trying, they’re just as helpless as you. Rei is struggling to deal with all of this with one hand tied behind her back, and I get it, and I’m not blaming her at all. but all the same, particularly given that she’s (understandably) putting almost all her focus on Shouto, the end result is that the other kids have basically been left to fend for themselves

so yeah! a shitty situation all around. and one of those cases where it’s not really anyone’s fault (aside from Enji’s), but I can understand the resentment Touya is feeling all the same. and I’m so glad Horikoshi is acknowledging this, because it’s something I probably would have been too uncomfortable to bring up otherwise. as it is it’s still an incredibly heavy subject, and one that I probably have too many personal feelings about

anyway, so once again the whole “we’ll try talking to him and then just shrug our shoulders when it doesn’t work” parenting strategy doesn’t really pan out for the Todoroki fam

sob this boy is Anakin Skywalkering before our very eyes. all that’s missing is AFO to come and start whispering in his ear. any minute now...

guess we’re getting pretty close then huh. this is the part of the flashback that I really don’t want to see, but also unfortunately the part that I’m most curious about :/

(ETA: and he still has this problem, doesn’t he? he froze up when Ending snatched Natsuo, and again when Dabi was attacking Shouto. he’s so afraid of doing the wrong thing that he ends up not doing anything, which of course is exactly what led to Touya’s death. damn Enji I guess you’ve still got some additional character development to unlock.)

and of course neither of them could possibly have known how badly it was going to turn out. like, the consequences here were WAY disproportionate even for the shittiest of parenting. no one expects “I didn’t know how to talk to my son” to snowball into “my son burned to death and then somehow came back as a villain and murdered thirty people”

I feel like the timeline here is off, btw?? wasn’t Touya’s death supposed to happen after Rei got hospitalized? this might be the first actual retcon of the entire flashback. although I think it makes more sense this way tbh

I do appreciate that ten years later Enji is finally reflecting on the fact that if he’d just given up his stupid obsession he could have stopped his family from crumbling apart. that probably sounds sarcastic as fuck, but it’s not. there are countless jerks out there who would have still managed to find a way to blame literally everyone and everything under the sun except for themselves. at least he finally figured out how to take responsibility, even if it came too late to stop his son from dying and being radicalized into a villain terrorist organization

and speaking of, it seems to me we’re missing a third and final part to this little tale of woe, and one which only Touya himself will be able to shed any light on. so we’ll see how that goes

holy shit. this is the most quintessential moment of father/son Todoroki bonding in the entire series. for me it even tops the “nice scar” scene lol. Enji sobbing at the fact that he still has a chance to set things right. and Shouto offering his hand in what is actually the most mature and selfless gesture I’ve ever seen, and being all “we’ll stop him together” to his dad who he hates, but also doesn’t really entirely hate anymore. and all of that is incredibly moving... BUT ALSO HE STILL REFUSES TO MAKE EYE CONTACT WITH HIM AND HE WOULD LIKE HIM TO STOP BEING SO FUCKING DRAMATIC ALREADY IF YOU DON’T MIND. “WHEN YOU’RE DONE CRYING...” fkjldsk
