Black faces. White spaces. . . . 🤎🖤✊🏾✊🏿 . As much as I try to be strong and work double time to make sure that I amplify my Black voice in spaces without BIPOC representation, my throat hurts today. The vocal strain of defending and educating all-white spaces about the importance of representation, inclusivity, and creating safe spaces where people feel they belong has put long-term stress and pressure on these vocal chords. My throat is tight and constricted. I’m deeply hurt by being pushed aside and pushed out because I am a triple minority in my previous male, white, british space. . The constant requirement to work in psychologically and physically unsafe white spaces weighs heavy on me. There are so many days where I wake up tired from the fight that hasn’t even begun. I know this is not normal and have to remind myself daily that there are safe, inclusive, respectful workplaces that truly celebrate diversity and champion the beauty of representation. Someday I hope to again work at one of those organizations. I’ve been fortunate to have worked at two: @brightscope_inc and @flow_kana. Maybe that’s enough for one lifetime. Adding new pictures to this series, where I recreate traditional old hairstyles from various African tribes, is by far my favorite. \n\nEvery time I finish one hairstyle and I watch myself in the mirror, I think, “this is my new everyday hairstyle.” \nLol, I am way too lazy to do those styles every day, but you get the point. It makes me feel truly beautiful. Cultures are made by humans; therefore, no culture in this world is perfect. African culture, in all its diversity and differences, has its flaws but has so much more beauty. My thoughts on Juneteenth becoming a federal holiday

I watched this last night because I noticed Jordan Peele was involved. I was just expecting a fun stop motion animation movie.

I was not expecting:

Racially and ethnically diverse cast ✓

Positive trans portrayal ✓

Anti for-profit prison message ✓

Kick ass afro-punk soundtrack ✓

It makes my heart happy to see so much positive portrayals of diversity set to rock music by BIPOC musicians. 🙂
