Hey bitches! I'm trying to get more into saving up and being thrifty. I've heard for years that coupons are a good start. One small problem, though; I don't know where to find them! Do y'all have any advice for a beginning coupon conisseur?
My darling chickadee, I'll preface this by saying that coupons require a little work... but I also just saved $56 on groceries this week by using coupons, sooooooo... WORTH IT.
The best way to get coupons with minimum effort is to join your grocery store (or pharmacy's) membership program. For most grocery stores, this is free: you just sign up with your name, email address, phone number, and home address. They'll give you a keychain tag or a card, and you swipe it every time you buy groceries. Then, they'll either automagically apply savings to your order as you're checking out, or they'll mail coupons to you that you can then bring to the store and use when checking out.
We wrote more about simple couponing in our grocery shopping guide:

So I've had a $2 @wendys coupon in my wallet for...twenty years. It doesn't have an expiration date. Time to see if I can get some fries!

I think there are a million other tumblr posts that say this but... if you are really struggling to buy food, apply for SNAP (food stamps) and/or go to a food shelf or food distribution.
These might seem obvious to a lot of people but I feel like maybe there’s a certain slice of the population that wouldn’t think to do either one, because of how they grew up or where they came from or what they’ve seen other people do/not do, etc.
If you search for tips on how to save money on food there are tons of bloggy type articles with tips on couponing and shopping the perimeter of grocery stores, and articles with titles like “How I Feed My Family for $80 a Month” which I’m sure are useful for some people. But I never see ones being like “hey you, if you’re googling this you might want to try finding assistance and get some food for free!” (which either speaks to pride/shame around “earning” things in the U.S. or to the search terms I’ve used).
If your income is below a certain limit you could qualify for SNAP, and your state should have a website with more info on how to apply. If your income is above the line but you don’t have enough money for food, there are other options. Where I live, there are a bunch of food shelves, free meal programs, and food distributions scattered across the city. Some of them are set up like grocery stores and you can go in and shop for what you want. Some of them will hand you a pre-packed bag of groceries. Some of them will give you a bag, but let you request certain items. A lot of them are no-questions-asked, and most are very friendly. Start googling, or find one program on Instagram and see what other programs they follow. Look for brochures at your local library.
We all need food, and there are people who want to help you get it.

I turned some of those Safeway health points into celery, and now I'm trying the regrowing thing. It's only been like 2 days and that's definitely the start of leaves. I'm not holding my breath for anything super dramatic but if I can prolong the edibility as a fresh veg (a lot of the celery itself will have to be frozen before it goes bad), that's a win.

^^^ Before and after coupons
They let you stack coupons, have manufacturer coupons in app, and I consistently get a 40% off one item coupon every week (which is amazing for more expensive drugstore skincare that’s not usually on sale)
