Hands down, Give is one of Sleep Token's yearn-iest songs. Ever. It's not on par with TLYW, Jaws etc. (because that's a whole different layer of Sleep Token's yearning onion), but it's got a kick to it.

When I say that song is the epitome of desperate, I mean it.

Without thinking about it too much, the first time I listened to it my first thoughts were 'ah, okay, wanting to give all for your lover and be able to trust them, got it', but then I thought about it a bit more.

Like with all Sleep Token songs, it has a bit of an eerie undertone, which borders on slightly obsessive, depending on who you're talking to, with the lyrics. We have "I picture you when you are all alone", "I am the shadow, you're a passenger", "I'll be the limit of your light again" and, of course, "give me all that you can give" with "and if you want to give me anything, then give (give in again)".

Vessel is describing himself as literal darkness; he's a shadow in the gloom and whoever this is is a star glowing in the darkness. A light he aims to dampen because he wants a taste of that light. A taste of them.

However, it's this desperation for attention that gets me. "Give me all that you can give" is an easy example; he's desperately giving all he can possibly give in hopes of getting the same, or more, back. It's repeated over and over, half begging half demanding with soft dulcet tones and promises that he'll be watching for their enemies, to let them know that they contend with him etc.

Give becomes this two-faced thing of someone giving with all their might to someone who is afraid to trust, bringing up empathy from us, and someone who will not accept anything except everything. It's this sexually charged fight between who is a victim (or if there really is one here) and who is the abuser.

Further, to "give in" is to 'cease fighting or arguing; admitting defeat.' It's something primal and angry hidden under, or rather, mixed with passion, and it's incredibly well hidden.

I literally think being in the taylor fandom is making me a worse person like I am so not a hater at heart and yet I just get so irritated by the fandom that it makes me feel like the most negative bitter person :/

#my previous tags on that ask about how kelsea has similarities with taylor this year has really made me realise #like i see kelsea being very public in her post breakup relationship and doing things like lyric changes on stage or kissing after a show #and i'm like 'aw that's nice for them :) if they're all loved up why not show it :)'#and then i see those things from taylor and i'm like 😐😒🫤#and the difference is that with kelsea i can see it and move on but with taylor i know i'm gonna see a million posts about it #and weird overly invested takes and analysis and annoying jokes #and it's meant that my automatic reaction is annoyance even though i'm annoyed at the fandom and not taylor #anyway this is just one example but i'm just realising that this fandom is like.. not a good place for me really #but it's tough when i've been so embedded in it for years and it's been such a good fun community at times #i'm trying to slowly retreat but idk it's not working that well #also doesn't help when my other fandoms are all quiet/on hiatus currently so there's no escape lol #talking

The first verse of All This Time (it’s late now/i’m tryna find the word to say for ages/just have patience/it’s not how you spend the time it’s if you waste it) reminds me so much of what Harry said about My policeman and it’s breaking my heart but I love it so much. Can’t stop listening to this album!!

This! song! is! so! queer!

All This Time was the one song I cried the first time I listened to it because it has this way of saying we see each other, we're the same with the lyrics "Our eyes meet. And I can tell that you’re the same as me. It’s the way we see ourselves through walls of trees" that completely blows my mind. That is one of the reasons I feel so safe and comfortable in this community. It's so personal for many of us here, listening to a song like this where there's such a big acknowledgement of these struggles and doubts… feeling seen is so good, it's a relief. And Louis always does this so fucking well, he did it with Just Like You, Copy Of and Only The Brave. But All This Time has this element of positivity.

Your parallel about the line "it’s not how you spend the time, it’s if you waste it" is so well put, anon. I love it so much, I can totally see them talking about this.. especially when they were younger, I feel there was a feeling there they were wasting their time. But it was never about wasting time for them, because they always embraced it, it's not a burden if you're proud of it like they are.

And also, for me, my own queer journey blends with my experience in this fandom so much. So there's also so much hope for what we see of them after all this time! For everything that we theorize and fight for even though we're completely lost and in the dark sometimes. It's so funny but the line "we keep on building mountains and hoping that they’ll turn to gold" every single day around here, we lose our hope the same way we keep hoping and we keep screaming and we keep fighting. For ourselves and for them. And that's never about wasting time if it's truthful... so it's worth it.

So as with all things, I needed to be comprehensive and overly detailed with this. Ill try and hold back from doing too much full song analysis, but I'll quote lyrics and explain why I associate what with who! Tbh I mostly just associate Smiths songs with Martian because I think their music is often really good at capturing the bitterness of a relationship falling apart or love so intense that it's violent, both which I think are very Martian

"You've Got Everything Now" - Martian

To me this is my de facto Martian song, I think about it constantly, I'll probably make a post with it sometime. It's just such a bitter song that's to me about a relationship falling apart. I view it from Mark's perspective.

"As merry as the days were long//I was right and you were wrong." Very petty, very bitter!!

"But you've got everything now//you've got everything now//and what a terrible mess I've made of my life." 2013 vibes, him being fed up with it all, particularly with Seb winning everything.

"You are your mother's only son//and you're a desperate one" Haha think of Christian as the mother in this situation. Golden boy vibes! Seb's utter desperation to win!

"A friendship sadly lost?//Well this is true...and yet it's false, oh//But did I ever tell you, by the way?//I never did like your face" Again that resentment and bitterness that made him act petty and childish

"I just want to be tied...oh ...to the back of your car" yayyyyy racing, why can't it be me in your position, in your car, etc etc

"These Things Take Time" - Brocedes or Martian

I used to think of this as only a Martian song but now it kinda makes me think of Brocedes. (To me)It's very much about one person in a friendship/relationship getting more successful and leaving the other behind.

Okay so this song is just kinda jokey and surprisingly horny for The Smiths, but its where my brain goes every time I see drivers in fireproofs...especially Seb...it's pretty self explanatory if you listen to it

"What Difference Does It Make?" - Martian

It reminds me of this one Martian fic(x) Again, a relationship deteriorating. How Seb's utter commitment and devotion to winning at all costs caused conflict between them and ultimately led to their relationship falling apart. Mark thinking he'd be seen as the Number One due to his seniority, and then being faced with Seb's no holds barred racing! I guess it's kind've how Mark never seemed to be capable of being as happy for Seb winning as Seb was for Mark. They're both at fault for the same reasons though tbh. But from Seb's perspective this time

"For we have been through hell and high tide//I think I can rely on you//And yet you start to recoil//Heavy words are so lightly thrown//But still I'd leap in front of a bullet for you" Teammates :( They keep fighting but can't stay mad at each other forever

"Well I'm still fond of you, oh-ho-oh." This can be both. Even if they had bad moments, they always seemed to be able to at least partially reconcile

"Back to The Old House" - Mark & Martian

Goddddd this song is just Mark's relationship with RBR, and particularly in its relation to Seb, and how he felt post-retirement. Like I can't even really pick lyrics because the whole entire song fits so well! I would love to make a web weave with this

"I would rather not go//Back to the old house//I would rather not go//Back to the old house//There's too many bad memories//Too many memories there" Mark's relationship with RBR in terms immediate post-retirement. How it got toxic by the end. The "old house" is so RBR coded for any ex-Red Bull driver tbh

"When you cycled by//Here began all my dreams//The saddest thing I've ever seen//And you never knew//How much I really liked you//Because I never even told you//Oh, and I meant to//Are you still there or have you moved away?//Or have you moved away?" This song makes me think of how arduous his career was, especially with how all those records that Hulk has now, were at one point his. Especially after watching the 2009 British GP, just that palpable relief of finally getting his first win. And then also 2010 WDC vibes, finally properly being involved in the fight. Please just let him get what he wants, this time! I dont need to analyze the lyrics for this, just listen to it and tell me it doesn't remind you of Mark!!

"Sweet and and Tender Hooligan" - Max

Hahaha this song reminds me of his first couple seasons and just the whole "Mad Max" thing. And just how RBR, particularly Christian, have to defend their boy!! Their sweet and tender hooligan!! I think I could make a web weave of this one as well haha, just with how other drivers, like Nico, talked about how much a menace he was.

all this time is so sad to me bc it's louis being like "sometimes i doubt i can get home" which breaks my heart??? the home motif is so so special and he's never used it in a depressing way before damn

yeah, it is a bit depressing, depending on how you look at it. i think, like with so many of his songs, this is him writing about how he has to convince himself to keep going sometimes, to keep doing what he's been working so hard for. almost like home here means a home run, winning the game, succeeding. or that he's not fully convinced that he's doing the right thing to make himself happy. he could just choose an easier path. but he knows it's worth the effort, and that this is what makes him the most happy. i also like to think of home in this sense more as a fictional place where you can live freely and be accepted no matter what, this place somewhere over the rainbow. but all this time is a song full of hope, you know? he sometimes doubts his efforts get him home, bc he will overthink everything, but he really does know already that it works. he knows that what he does it worth it, that he has a home in his friends, in the love gives and receives. he knows it's worth it all this time !!!

im just going to go off in the tags for my review but last nights concert was crazy, entertaining, and crazily entertaining. while they did not play the rhythm thief clearly my rhythm, if i ever had any, was stolen and ron and russell were easily able to see my lack of clapping and dancing skills. when will those 70+ year old men stop beating me at everything

#you would think clapping on the beat is easy. not when youre on a level of excitement you havent been since you were a kid #in all seriousness my sarcastic tone is covering the fact that i really did enjoy it all so much. now on to the analysis #we'll get right to the heart of the matter: russell was sweating three songs in and well. there are many benefits to being in the front row #im really really sorry. but. good god i may have been looking at his neck a lot of the time #also it may have been during the first song but i feel like it was during another one where he jumped (beaver o'lindy?)#and my eyebrow raise and look of 👁️👄👁️ when his shirt rode up was very palpable. i was very close .#i think russ looked at me a couple times near the start but it was more of a dfjfljkda dont look at me im staring at u like 😍 moment for me #im just so self conscious it hurts! but i was smiling my head off the entire time while also not knowing how to stand #the front row was standing the entire time it was wild #also i think the moment i predicted did happen of ron giving me a look like 🤨 for knowing all the lyrics to one of their more obscure songs #but i could be wrong.#russell was bouncing off the walls as usual but good god to see it in person. and he sounded incredible!!!!#i also could not resist bouncing a few times. its contagious. plus you gotta do it during music that you can dance to #good gosh what a fun time.#at the end of the concert someone was like 'i could see you looking with such love' like yes very true. good to know it was obvious #can i just say again russell was sooo. its a different thing altogether seeing him like 6 feet away in the Real World #did i mention how sweaty he was. ok review almost over #still no eaten by the monster of love but hard to complain with such a great show #spars #sparks tour 2023 spoilers

Redefine how to feel human

We know Fayrouz is in denial about her mistakes, so being faced with the reality that Mariyam and Tamari are very close to human, with thoughts and feelings, hits pretty hard.

Also, automata has two definitions:

a moving mechanical device made in imitation of a human being.

used in comparisons to refer to a person who seems to act in a mechanical or unemotional way.

The first one fits the siblings, the second one fits Fayrouz. 'How to feel human' has to be redefined because her androids are more human than she is

Redefine my kindness

Redefine what’s wrong, what’s right

So you don’t test my patience

Still about denial, she'll come up with so many reasons why she's not a bad person

Don’t expect an easy life and

Don’t expect my mercy

She's cold and, well, I wouldn't describe her as merciless, but she's not particularly merciful. I also feel like this is what she indirectly communicated to Mariyam after Tamari ran away because he expected all that.

Hold your breath and walk on ice

For any less would hurt me

This might mean that she's also very fragile, and 1- anything going against her plans is wrong because she's controlling, and 2- she's been hurt before and every time it happens it hurts more

I think this is just emphasizing the clinical tone, but also how she's not the same as she was before. This could be that she's changed inside even if her cold attitude remained the same, or that she developed that attitude after everything that happened? I don't think so but eh, it's still possible

Carelessness widens the fault

'The neglected' are her ex-husband and the siblings, but she 'tore them appart' unintentionally and/or unconsciously, which from her point of view makes it even worse

This one puzzles me. The 'perfect twin' is Mariyam, but why does she say 'her home' if obviously Mariyam didn't exist before being created? Is Fayrouz talking about herself in the third person for some reason?? But then I don't see why it'd say 'twin'

Either way, the point is that Mariyam was supposed to be perfect

This is both about her ex-husband and Tamari, but I think it's specifically comparing Mariyam and Tamari and how Mariyam was everything that Tamari 'could have never been', maybe because he reminded Fayrouz of her ex-husband so she's projecting all her negative feelings about him on them after they ran away

The reason why she treated the siblings like that is because they remind her of her ex-husband. (Bonus: the instrumental for the line 'he never came back that day' is very similar to the one for 'now you're all alone' in EWN. Fayrouz is all alone now)

Self explanatory, she never realized that there was anything wrong until her ex-husband, Tamari and Mariyam left.
