Grumpy not-so-Gucci Anymore Bear 🐻

Sorry for jumping on here, but I think it’s interesting because Gina and I have almost polar opposite processes. Where Gina gets visual ideas, I’m extremely plot-focused and often have a hard time devoting myself to stories that feel “thin” from the beginning.

So, one main part of my process is deciphering whether an idea is a drabble or a full fic — meaning, is there a story to really be told or is this a snapshot that gets right to the point to capture attention. The way I do this is to ask “can I tell this story in a tumblr post?”; if I can, it’s a drabble (which doesn’t mean it’s not worth writing, mind you. It just means that I won’t break my head open trying to build on an idea that’s come to a natural end already).

Understanding this can help you when you’re trying to write what you called more book-like fic, because I feel like new writers often get discouraged when they’re writing the wrong length for the wrong idea. They keep asking themselves why they can’t build on something that, as a concept, is actually better short.

From there, I always start writing the AO3 summary, because I always find this is the “perfect” (imo) North Star when you literally lose the plot. Your AO3 summary should be able to tell you, from one look, what the original hook of the story is and why you were interested in writing it, from the beginning. This is a really good touchstone for me when I (inevitably) lose faith in my talent or my plot or both. It’s sort of a “hey, remember why you latched onto this? Remember why this is the story you wanted to tell?” type thing.

Lastly, be kind to yourself as you figure out your process. We’re not all outliners and heavy note takers. We get inspired by different things, have different voices, so naturally, also have different processes. If heavy outlines don’t work for you, try quick, snappy headers — just something to keep your scene on track so you can see the skeleton when you get lost.

Also, you don’t have to have everything figured out from the moment you start outlining. Some parts of the plot (the conflict, the resolution, how to get from point C to DEFG) will reveal themselves as your characters reveal themselves to you. Stick with it.

Hi Gina! I hope you’re having a good day. I’m new to fic writing and I wanted to ask for some advice. So far I have been writing preferences as a way to practice and write different scenarios. I do want to write a longer, more book like fic and I wanted to know your process in going about doing so. Do you plan the whole story out? Do you just kinda mark events you want to have and go from there? Or even just write and write chapters until it’s developing? I’m trying to narrow down a concept I want to go with and decide how to go about it, but even then I feel like I’ll put myself in a box and be stuck. Thank you so much if you answer this 😭💕

Hi, darling. I may not be the best person to answer this question because I feel like I'm really still learning this myself. However, I'll do my best. My biggest struggle is that most of my stories start out as visual ideas. That is, I see something that inspires the mood, a character, a location, a vague idea, etc. I then have to hash out whether there's actually a story there and who my characters are, and I generally do that with India, who is my writing partner and beta.

Once I have a basic sense of the story, I try to write a brief synopsis for myself, get some details about the characters, their backstories, and their arc, and lay out the order of events to get from A to B. Sometimes, this includes specific scenes that I want to happen, but it always includes my goals for each scene (e.g., introduce x character, lay the foundation for x part of the backstory, etc.).

From there, I just start writing. I rarely skip around because my brain doesn't work well that way. And, either because I'm not great at outlining or because things just change as I write, I often find that I go back and tweak things as I go along (which is why I can never post as a WIP).

Not sure if this is at all helpful, but that's what i've got! LOL! Honestly, my best piece of advice is to get a writing partner (or partners) who you can bounce ideas off of and who aren't afraid to give constructive criticism.

Louis was asked about Harry and the "stupid relationship" that people have made up based on conspiracies and Louis said that they are made up stories and that he can't stop them, but that sometimes it affects his son who is the most important of his life. Honestly it just makes me laugh, I guess in the next interview they will have Freddie say how conspiracies sadden him.

Yeah, I’ve only just woken up, so I haven’t really had time to gather my thoughts about it, but overall, I think he’s been quite consistent over the last couple of years that he doesn’t not want a focus put on Larry. Whether that’s because they’ve broken up or because they’re together and want privacy, I don’t know. But, either way, I really think he’s made it very clear that it’s not helpful to him at this point.

Aside from that, this was probably the least offensive I’ve seen him be when it comes to larries. Does it hurt? Sure. But I’ve basically made peace a while ago with the fact that as fans we know very little and that at this point, neither Harry nor Louis seem to want their fans’ focus to be on their relationship.
