Scents + Stories: Part 1
(pairing books with fragrances that match their vibes)
I’ve been doing this series on my bookstagram where I pair the book I’ve just read with a fragrance from my collection (usually from alkemia perfumes) that best matches it’s atmosphere, themes, and overall vibes.
I also take requests if there’s a specific book you’d like me to find a matching scent for! I find it super fun to do 💕

might you have a few recommendations (on the more affordable side) for warm, sensual, but not sugary-sweet fragrances? i love your descriptions so much
when recommending affordable fragrances, my favourites will always be scent oils; a little really goes a long way with them, and you can find a lot of affordably-priced niche perfumers, my faves being of course bpal and alchemia.
from bpal - o is very warm and one of the most erotic scents i've sampled, but it is also quite sweet. it's a honey sort of sweetness, though, if that makes any difference, with an amber and musk base. bastet is similar but a bit less honey-heavy, leaning more into almond, cardamom, lotus and myrrh. eden also has a strong almond top note, warm and creamy coconut, and a green peek of fig leaf.
from alkemia - vanille amour is a classic spiced vanilla; think chai or wintry spice mixes. may be on the sweeter side, though. if you prefer a less foody vanilla, then incantation vanille is a good choice, featuring incenses and leather; quite sultry and mysterious. promises by candlelight features almond meal and tropical blooms and creates the feeling of a balmy summer night.

recently i've been getting into notes that are less sweet and gourmand.... idk i'll always be a vanilla girl at heart, but as we approach the fall and the weather is perfect for wearing louder fragrances i've been really leaning more into deeper, more complex scents that tell more of a story on my skin. i feel it's also a symptom of getting older and shedding the more comfortable parts of me to continue in the path of the becoming the woman that i am
notes i'm leaning towards rn:
incense, myrrh
oud
woods
earth, clay
new perfumes i'm enjoying:
Tumblr media
armani/prive oud royal
notes: agarwood, incense, sandalwood, saffron, rose
profile: unisex
with oud... if you get it, you get it. this smells super similar to bakhoor. smoky, sweet, sexy, spicy. perfect for a breezy night.
Tumblr media
byredo slow dance
notes: (top) opoponax, cognac, (middle) labdanum, violet, geranium, (base) vanilla, patchouli, incense
profile: unisex
boozy, spiced dessert with lovely florals. it leans a bit on the sweet side, which i would love to try layering with more woody and green scents for balance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
alkemia silken tent
notes: candied angelica, chrysanthemum, nardo, jasmine-scented rice pudding, blonde caramel, golden amber
profile: feminine
the herbs are mouthwatering. i seriously cannot stop smelling myself whenever i wear this one. i did have to let it age for a bit for the rice pudding note to come in, but once it did, it was creamy without being too sweet. 10/10.

do any of you use Alkemia perfumes? (or have any other recs for someone getting into the perfumery hobby tbh) I ordered two of their sample sets (gentleman's club and dark academe) I like a couple of the scents- particularly Highwayman from gentleman's club, but I'm finding that it doesn't linger on my skin for even an hour. Is this typical for alkemia scents? I really enjoy leather/smoke notes if anyone has any recommendations for those

Story Reviews of Alkemia scents I find academia core
Absinthe and Laudanum in the Afternoon - Opium poppy, Labdanum, Tonka, Wormwood
Dark Academia
It's been a long day.
Your weary bones ache for rest. You slowly drag yourself to your dimly-lit parlor, light an incense stick and finally sink into a worn velvet armchair. As you lazily watch the plumes dance and fade into the air, you dryly note that you need to wash, but the thought of moving even a finger deters you. Not willing to let the weariness of the day be washed off your tired body, you let it fade into haziness as you slowly drift off to a dreamless sleep.
Madam Pearl - White tea leaves, Bone china, Vanilla pods, White pepper
Romantic/ Dark Academia
Hair tucked back with long fingers. Hushed whispers followed by a twinkling laugh. Pearls glisten from her neck as she leans back in her chair, carefully balancing her tea as she takes a puff from her cigarette.
The lady of the hour, the Madam Pearl.
Poudre d'épicine- Gender Neutral Powder, Japanese Musk, Mint Creme Anglaise
Light Academia
Time moves slowly in the sitting area of a candle-lit French powder room, and the flickering light brings out warmth from the mint-green wallpaper.
The couch you're stretched out on has been well-loved: the blush-pink upholstery is faded but distinguished and in good shape. You bury your face into one of its many voluptuous pillows and breathe in and in an instant, something floods your nose. The couch has soaked in powder from the many ladies that have graced its cushions.
You quickly unbury yourself and rush to a mirror to make sure you don't arrive to dinner looking like a beignet.

5 alkemia samples
silken tent
first impressions: its a bit disappointing.... smells nice and sweet abit powdery but its extremely similar to a $10 vanilla body spray i got from woolworths.... not worth it so far but ill let it sit for a while.
+after sitting for a while its gorgeous. sweet syrupy golden but not too edible smelling. the angelica adds a soft fuzzy herbal tone that balances the fragrance and cuts through the syrupy texture and keeps it from getting cloying. i cant stop inhaling it. i can smell the candied angelica, rice pudding and caramel the best and the jasmine, tuberose and chrysanthemum are more of a subtle white floral in the background.
★★★★★
aurora
first impressions: stexture eally nice reminds me of those musky perfumes you get from mecca that are by byredo or sum shit... i like it fresh neutral a bit of cardamom and iris.
+the iris is really pretty very buttery and milky not too powdery. i can smell the cardamom, violet, musk clearly and the cashmeran adds a cedar element but i cant detect any ginger. ethereal is a good word to describe it. i was wearing it while watching spirited away the other day and i felt like they were a good match especially soundtracks like a road to somewhere and the beginning of nighttime coming.
★★★★
bohemiens en voyage
first impressions: i put it on tadhg it smells like a hippie perfume but more pleasant and wearable in my opinion. a bit smoky a bit like hay a bit sweet. i tried to smell it again but he had made a smoked salmon croissant and all i could smell was da salmon.
+theres no anise in the notes but the beginning smells like it has a licorice note. i can smell the hay, tobacco and amber in the beginning plus a lowkey background sweetness from the sugarcane which smells crystalised. after about 10 minutes the licorice type note is gone (maybe the tabac leaf?) and i can smell hay, sugarcane and the most gorgeous skin musk. buttery salty creamy is how id describe it which might not sound so appealing but it really is beautiful. this is also a golden coloured fragrance like silken tent but instead of being an amber colour its more of a soft dusty yellow. this scent makes me think of malibu by hole. i think that tobacco hay sugarcane and iris are very kinderwhore themed notes in my mind. my mother said that the opening smells like talcum powder.
★★★★★
the wild atlantic way
first impressions: SOO GOOD..... smells fresh and oceanic and floral and the flowers are like honey-sweet wildflowers this is GOOD ASF..... i like it fr. abit soapy but im still lovin it
+the opening flowers are so sweet and full that they almost smell fruity. they smell bright yellow and juicy and you can really smell the nectar and pollen in them. after ten minutes the flowers arent as juicy but they are still very bright and sweet and you start smelling the salt of the ambergris. slowly the flowers die down and it becomes a slightly floral ambergris perfume. im learning that im a huge fan of yellow florals. i saw someone on reddit say that this fragrance reminds them of a romantic scene in a movie (braveheart is the example they used) and i can see that. to me it calls to mind a scene of green fields bright yellow flowers cliffsides and rough waves. the clouds are thick and covering the whole sky except for one break where the sunlight streams down in rays golden and the bright sunlit landscape is contrasted by the dark grey clouds in the distance and it looks otherworldly. one of my favourite kinds of weathers but yeah i like this scent though i am generally a floral lover.
★★★★★
wings of flame
first impressions: this shit smells delicious like coffee yummy.
+smells edible but not overly sweet. the coffee is almost dessert like and the honey is chewy and amber coloured. it makes sense that the coffee note is described as "golden coffee" because it almost smells a bit like caramel with how rich and deep and sweet it is. i put it on tadhg to see his reaction and he says he loves honey+coffee combinations because its decadent in an ancient way. i can see what he means especially for this fragrance in particular. theres no patchouli in the notes but that was a note my mum picked up on.

A lengthy post cataloging my 60+ vial perfume collection
Tumblr media
This is mainly a post for me to keep track of my ever-growing collection of perfume samples and bottles. In the future I’ll probably dedicate a post to each one to give my thoughts and reviews! But all that aside, here’s every perfume I’ve collected so far, with names and descriptions included.
BPAL SAMPLES
Alice’s Evidence - Containing nary a neutron of meaning: Rum-quince-cassis with prune and a bit of black ginger
The Antikythera Mechanism - Teakwood, oak, black vanilla, and tobacco
Al-Shairan - His scent is fiery, bright and thick with sweet sinfulness: clove, peach and orange with cinnamon, patchouli and dark incense notes
Blood Kiss - Lush, creamy vanilla and the honey of the sweetest kiss smeared with the vital throb of husky clove, swollen red cherries, but darkened with the vampiric sensuality of vetiver, soporific poppy and blood red wine, and a skin-light pulse of feral musk.
Bayou - A lazy, warm deep green scent with a thick aquatic undertone: Spanish moss, evergreen and cypress with watery blue-green notes and an eddy of hothouse flowers and swamp blooms
Black Lily - Breathtaking darkness, a vision of grace in shadow
Burial - The Dark Side of Earth: deep, brooding forest scents, including juniper and patchouli. The scent of upturned cemetery loam mingling with floral offerings to the dead
Chimera - The fiery, volatile scent of cinnamon, thickened by myrrh, honeysuckle, and copal
The Coiled Serpent - A potent yogic oil that stimulates the kundalini, provokes spiritual awakening, and releases the energy seated in your root chakra
Death Cap - A lethal poison bundled up in a dainty, innocent little package that was oft times found in ancient witches’ flying ointments and astral projection balms. A warm, soft, ruddy scent, earthy and mild
Delight - In ancient India it was believed that a specific combination of flower petals, when strewn across a couple’s bed, would amplify desire and sexual pleasure. This blend is a blend of the same floral essences, refined into a gloriously sinful perfume blend. Frangipani, with rose, tuberose, and jasmine
Deep in Earth - Rose geranium, Spanish moss, Irish yew, and graveyard dirt
Eat me - Three white cakes, vanilla, and red and black currants
Evil - Smouldering opium tar, tobacco absolute, green tea, black plum, kush, ambergris accord, ambrette seed, and costus root
Greed - Base and earthy, yet glittering with golden notes: patchouli, heliotrope, copal and oakmoss
Gnome - An explosive blend of effervescent golden ginger and black peppercorn with sarsaparilla, gurjum balsam, nutmeg, gear lubricant, and smoke
Highwayman - Vetiver with gardenia, blood red rose, night-blooming jasmine, a dash of cinnamon and a faint hint of leather
Inferno - The Dark Side of Fire: cinnamon, bitter almond, and neroli. Heavily spiced, torrid, and possibly conflagrant
Juke Joint - A bawdy, gleefully wicked and unruly scent: Kentucky Bourbon, sugar and a sprig of mint
Jezebel - A gloriously decadent blend of honey, roses, orange blossom and sandalwood
Miskatonic University - The scent of Irish coffee, dusty tomes and polished oakwood halls
Mata Hari - Her scent is striking and bold with a delicate yet dark undertone: five roses with soft jasmine, warmed by vanilla, fig, tonka bean and mahogany, spiced with a drop of coffee bean
Nephilim - Holy frankincense and hyssop in union with earthy fig, defiled by black patchouli and vetiver, with a chaotic infusion of lavender, cardamom, tamarind, rosemary, oakmoss and cypress
Old Demons of the First Class - Siberian musk, black clove, opoponax, tonka, black pepper, and neroli
Perversion - Smoky rum and black tobacco with a whisper of steamy leather with a splash of crystalline chardonnay, layered over a sensual, sweet, and deceptively magnetic base of tonka
Sjofn - Our song to the Norse Goddess of Love is scented with apples and birch and bound with apple blossoms
Seraphim - A perfume sacred to the highest of the angelic hosts: calla lily, wisteria, white sandalwood, Damascus rose and frankincense
Schrodinger’s Cat - A paradoxical scent experiment! – tangerine, sugared lime, pink grapefruit, oakmoss, lavender, zdravetz, and chocolate peppermint
Tiefling Therapist - A soothing, centering blend of white and red sandalwood, champaca attar, frankincense, and brimstone
Whitechapel - White musk, lime, lilac and citron
Wilde - A sophisticated traditional gentleman’s cologne, with just the slightest taint of patchouli’s passion, tonka bean’s decadence, the philanthropy of bergamot, moss’ cynicism, the sharp wit of lavender, and the hopeless romantic longing of jasmine and thyme
Yorick - Grave dirt, bone, decay, angel’s trumpet, and moldering scraps of shroud: the essence of finality
Zombi - Dried roses, rose leaf, Spanish moss, oakmoss and deep brown earth
(As an aside, about half of these are free imps that came with full size bottles I ordered!)
Alkemia Samples
Salome - A seductively inspiring arrangement to pique the lustful imagination. An overture of not so innocent magnolia underscored with a sly caress of Queen of the Night, a fulsomeness of nubile black grapes and plums, skin musk bathed in spilled cognac, and ruthless twist of bitter orange, blended with an ancient Arabian love philtre of crushed vanilla and tonka bean, mysore sandalwood, vetiver, cedar, and red oud
Caveau Des Innocents - Tabac, dark coffee, piquant cloves, rum soaked pears, candied citron, dark caramel, and star anise bathed in intoxicating swirls of opoponax, labdanum, hashish, benzoin resinoid, vanilla incense, and guaiac wood
Ghost Fire - A luminous attraction of ethereal white ambers. Hauntingly beautiful
Sigil - A recipe in an ancient 16th century grimoire that includes olibanum frankincense, lignum aloes, bdellium, styrax, black honey, and euphorbium; the essence of "Stones of Immortality" - opium thebaicum, dried citrus, and the quintessence of gold; and an alchemist's compounding of coffee beans and ritual herbs
Hippie Spirit - A bohemian love-fest of resinous head shop incenses, sexy skin musk, slightly dirty patchouli, groovy champa blossoms, and flowering cannabis
Gothique - The scent of midnight mass in a medieval cathedral. A Byzantine monastic incense recipe of Somalian frankincense, styrax benzoin, Arabian myrrh, cassia, spikenard, canella, Liquidambar orientalis, labdanum, Atlas cedar, and vetiver
Carmilla - A tantalizing enigma of Ambre marocain, cashmere musk, Malgas lily, Ylang-ylang, dark Bourbon rose, soft patchouli, and erotic whispers of jasmine incense
In a Northern Wood - A primeaval forest sanctuary of Elemi balsam, balsam fir needles, charred cedar heartwood, dark oakmoss, opoponax, aged oudwood, deerstongue fern, woodsmoke, aromatic fungi, patchouli, and loam
Dusk in Autumn - An inviting mystery of amberwood, Lapsang Souchong tea, salted cream caramel, and spiced teacakes
Nature of the Beast - An animalistically sensual carnality of Amyris wood, Elemi balsam, and raw dark musk with Haitian vetiver, ambroxan, spiced patchouli, labdanum and botanical pheromones
Carnival of Illustrious Hearts - A glitteringly gourmet gala of French sugarcreams, candied orange blossoms, raspberry cotton candy, rosewater torte filling, and Bourbon vanilla amber
All Hallows Eve 2021 - A spookalicious cauldron of magic, mystery, remembrance, childhood nostalgia, and sweet blessings for darker times. Warm toasted marshmallows, drifting woodsmoke, black licorice, star anise, cardamon pods, sugared amber, tonka beans, and patchouli infused bourbon vanilla
Memoriam - An olfactory ode to love and loss. Heirloom roses, memories wrapped in woodsmoke, a scattering of ashes
Industrial Sabotage - A cataclysmic wreckage of burnt wires; twisted melted steel; shattered machinery, and gunpowder
The Center of the Universe - From astronauts' descriptions of space and aliphatic esters of the Milky Way - welded metal, gunpowder, burnt almond cookies, ozone, raspberries, rum
Deus Ex Machina - Fire hardened steel, rusted iron, warm motor oil, wet cement, burnt copper wires, and grey amber
Saint Louis Cemetery #1 - An atmospheric brooding of Spanish moss, crumbling stone, old cement, red clay brick, and graveyard dirt
Supernatural - A prismatic shapeshifter of Iso-E, Ambrox, cruelty-free Tonkin musk, and intricate spirals of aroma molecules
Black Iris - The spring forecast is rainy with a chance of purple. Purple iris and Queen Elizabeth orris root pillowed in a soft nimbostratus raincloud
Charming of the Plough - A paen of the awakening earth - bright new greens, freshly turned soil, well worn leather, anise hyssop, smokey lavender, sexy-dirty indolic jasmine, vanilla grass, and oakmoss
Frondescence - A verdancy of fresh fern fronds, wild geraniums, damp moss, green patchouli, vetiver root, early meadowgrass, and tumbling wetland streams
Inner Sanctum - A spiritual serenity of Hinoki temple cedar, carved Palisander rosewood, white ambergris, lemon cypress, sandalwood incense, grounding vetiver root, and healing sandalore
Surcie - A sweet confection of affection - heavenly rosewater chiffon, soft jasmine musk, flirty mandarin orange, creamy vanilla, and alluring Egyptian amber
Tulips and Chimneys - An urban springtime of rainy aldehydes, wet asphalt, industrial steam engines, farmer's market bouquets of fresh tulips, Toulousain violets, mint pastels, and a warm touch of clove viburnum
Lover Tells of the Rose - Rambling wild roses, lemon verbena, white pearl tea leaves, white patchouli, and a springtime rebirth of new greens and wet mosses
Gaea - Forest loam, new ferns in decaying leaves, maple sap flowing over lichens, mosses and wet stones at the edge of a vernal pool
Shinrin Yoku - A forest hymn - Japanese grapefruit, petitgrain, black pepper, spicebush, sunlit green cedar, conifers, green patchouli, vetiver, stream water, wet clay, and dark loam
Baccante - High bush blueberries, wild ivy, Spanish lavender, aged oakmoss, tonka, decaying bark, and forest fungi
Vert sur le Vert - Green, green, green, and more freshly smooshed sweet greens, new grasses, new leaves
Midnight Garden - An incantation in the language of flowers: tuberose (dangerous pleasures), lily (majestic beauty), honeysuckle (binding love), gardenia (secret passions) and moonflower (inspiring love)
BPAL Full Sizes
Nosferatu - As soft as grave dust and as dry as a breath drawn within a long forgotten crypt, this is Nosferatu: desiccated herbs and gritty earth brought to life with a swell of robust and sanguineous red wines
Anubis - His scent is a blend of holy myrrh, storax, balsam, and embalming herbs
Oblivion - Salvation found in darkness beyond darkness, the blessed sleep of nothingness. Dark musk, wood spice, labdanum, patchouli, dark African woods, and saffron

Odalisques Dans Le Harem - Maurice Bompard
This is the painting featured with Alkemia’s Silken Tent fragrance--and both are to die for. I’m a total perfume junkie and spent an hour sitting on my couch making notes about the samples I got from Alkemia. Silken Tent was a winner the moment I opened the vial. It is a sweet, soft, gourmand floral completely unique to itself. It is smooth and gentle and sensual without being overwhelming. The rice pudding and chrysanthemum were notes I couldn’t have imagined, really, until suddenly they were the only things I wanted to smell! Absolutely delicious.
Brand: Alkemia
Nose: Sharra Lamoureaux
Notes: candied angelica, chrysanthemum, nardo, jasmine-scented rice pudding, blonde caramel, golden amber
Sillage: intimate
Longevity: 5+ hours

scent of the day: byredo slow dance + alkemia ghost fire
Tumblr media Tumblr media
byredo slow dance
notes: (top) oponopax, cognac, (heart) labdanum, violet, geranium, (base) vanilla, patchouli, incense
alkemia ghost fire
notes: white amber
so sexy. this smells like nuzzling your neck into your lover and then realizing two hours have passed by without you knowing. slow dance is an earthy resin of sweetness, spicy incense, and spilled liquor. the cognac is syrupy sweet, almost leaning towards a cola. the florals serve as a bridge between the dense patchouli incense smoke and sweetness of the oponopax and vanilla. it is date night-worthy in its own right, but paired with ghost fire adds an ambery warmth that emanates throughout. this combo smells like when your cheeks flush and you can't tell if it's from your date's flirting or loosening up after your first drink. your body heat begins to rise as you fall victim to your attraction. i can't wait to wear this on nights out or nights in...
occasion: [fall/winter], dates, dancing, romance
profile: a true unisex, but i’d love to smell this as a masculine scent

for christmas my love bought me some samples from indie fragrance houses and then full sized a few of my favourites for my birthday. i’m so very excited for them to arrive!!
Holy Terror - Arcana Wildcraft - “There are utterly somber and fearsome spirits which are known to haunt certain long-deserted chapels, monasteries, and abbeys. An unsettling, austere blend of burning frankincense, sandalwood, deep myrrh, and dusty beeswax candles.”
this will easily become the signature scent for both myself and my love. we loved it in the bottle, and even more on skin. it really does smell just like a dusty old church, the beeswax candles are sweet and it has that distinct smoke of candles just blown out. the resinous incense is scrumptious and it is at once atmospheric while being completely wearable.
The Honored Ghosts - Alkemia - “An offering of Earl Grey tea, black raspberry creams, rosewater-saffron syrup, cinnamon honey, white amber, and vanilla incense.”
i wasn’t sure about the black raspberry note at first, but this is such a delicious fruity, creamy tea and the cinnamon and vanilla incense are so lovely that i often find myself craving the scent. for me it evokes images of sitting in the garden drinking tea from a pretty vintage teacup with little purple violets or pansies on it.
Cemetery Tour - The Strange South - “Osmanthus, crumbling stone, brick dust, moss, and graveyard dirt.”
i don’t usually enjoy florals on myself, and i don’t get the graveyard dirt in this at all which i was most excited for, but i absolutely love this scent. it is such a soft, sweet, dusty white floral, reminiscent of memorial or funerary flowers. it feels delicate and beautifully melancholic.
