Doraemon Vol. 8 from The Complete Works of Fujiko F. Fujio

The stories in this one were published in 1975–1981. In a clear indicator that some of them were drawn concurrently with the airing of the classic anime series, Doraemon and Nobita namedrop their own voice actors at one point!

Some of the most iconic Doraemon stories in this volume (as determined by my personal experience and biases):

"音のない世界" ("A World Without Sound", 1977): To avoid having to listen to another one of Gian's concerts, Nobita and Doraemon create a parallel universe where sound doesn't exist. It doesn't work as planned, because just reading Gian's lyrics is unbearable. I wondered how the anime handled this story, and as it turns out... it hasn't. This is one of the few Doraemon manga chapters that has never been adapted into the anime.

"天井うらの宇宙戦争" ("The Space War in the Ceiling", 1978): Nobita and Doraemon answer a distress call from tiny aliens, in a parody of Star Wars: A New Hope. Not to be confused with Nobita's Little Star Wars, despite the very similar theme.

"のび太の地底国" ("Nobita's Underground Nation", 1980): Nobita and his friends build a secret base underground. He appoints himself as their leader and the power goes to his head. The beginning of this story was later used as the basis for the movie Nobita and the Knights on Dinosaurs.

"ぼくよりダメなやつがきた" ("Someone Worse Than Me Came", 1980): Nobita's class receives a new transfer student who gets even worse grades than he does.

"のら犬「イチ」の国" ("Land of Ichi the Stray Dog", 1980): Nobita picks up a stray dog and realizes that there's a major stray animal problem in the area. He and Doraemon find a home for them in the Carboniferous Period. This story was later used as the basis for the movie Nobita in the Wan-Nyan Spacetime Odyssey.

"しずちゃんさようなら" ("Goodbye, Shizuka", 1980): Nobita worries that Shizuka will be miserable if she gets married to him in the future. He decides that the solution to this is to make her hate him.

"のび太が消えちゃう?" ("Will Nobita Disappear?", 1981): Nobita and Doraemon travel back in time to convince Nobita's dad to pursue his dream of becoming an artist, but then realize this might prevent Nobita from ever having been born.

Mina Ashido Headcanons!

@jewel116 requested some headcanons of our Alien Queen and I am here to deliver!

Some of these also could be considered BakuSquad HCs, hope that's alright.

I also went ahead and included some Adult Mina and 18+ Mina Headcanons too. Both are below the cut and clearly stated. Warnings are posted at each header mark.

Basic Mina Headcanons

Warnings: It's as fluffy as her dang hair! (Swearing)

. Most definitely has ADHD! In class, she is constantly tapping her foot on bouncing her leg as a means of trying her best to keep focused.

. Has a collection of shirts that she has designated for sleep and loungewear because she's burned acid holes in them by accident. Sometimes she'll wear them to concerts and shows if the design is cool enough.

. Loves piggyback rides! Frequently will run and jump on the backs of the guys in the BakuSquad. Even Katsuki himself puts up with it after a while.

. While Katsuki is the 'mom' of the squad, Mina is the one everyone goes to when they need comfort. Denki will curl up in her lap after a long day, Eijiro frequently goes to her when his insecurities creep back in, Hanta shows up late at night and they talk in her room about nothing just because he doesn't want to be alone, and Katsuki, well, he shows up to her room, slams the door and complains for a solid half-hour after reading a particularly heartbreaking scene in a manga while she listens to every word and validates his feelings.

. Mina worries far more than people believe she does. Her bubbly, loud, personality usually masks it but she knows when people are lying to her about what's going on in their heads.

. Sitting properly in a chair physically bothers her. She'd much rather be hanging upside down off it.

. She lowkey likes that the boys get protective over her.

. Mina is the type of person who gets A LOT of random thoughts that pop up in her head and one of the few people who actually will engage with the sheer randomness of the ideas is Shoto. Not only does he engage, he comes up with his own! The two can talk for hours.

. Loves hosting 'spa parties' in the common area of the dorms, everyone is welcome to join.

. When road trips happen, she's making the playlists (technically, she and Kyoka switch off).

. Tries teaching Tenya, Izuku, and Shoto how to flirt. After a very embarrassing first hour, Shoto didn't learn a single thing, Izuku was only good at it when paired with Shoto and Tenya... Tenya had her SHOOK! Man has game and she made sure everyone knew!

. Has weekly meetings with Yuga where they drink tea and spill the tea.

. She is so damn ticklish. Hanta was teasing her one day, she warned him to stop, he received an elbow to the face for not listening.

. Tried to grow her hair out once but it didn't grow down... it grew OUT. Mina thought she rocked it, and she totally did but ended up having it cut back down so poor Tsyu could see in class.

. Wakes up early three days a week to practice her hand-to-hand combat with Eijiro. Mina wants to improve her technique and Eijiro needed to work on his mobility, it benefits them both.

. Just Dance is her favorite game, she dominates.

. Easily forms new interests.

. Won't admit it but she gets jealous super easily.

. Will be the first to attempt to throw hands for a friend! I HC she was picked on as a child for looking so different but it never really phased her too badly, she likes looking different but understands that not everyone thinks like she does. So, if someone were to say something about Mezo's facemask, she's stepping in to defend the guy without hesitation.

. Knows every TikTok dance EVER. If a new one comes out, she's mastered it by end of the day and her account is always up to date.

. (Popular idea but important to reinforce) Mina and Eijiro co-founded a club, Horn Buddies, specifically to make Eri feel more welcome. They take her on trips and group outings. The only horned person who's not allowed to join is Pony because she was rude as heck to Mezo.

. Mina gets extra competitive over board games.

. She can ice skate and roller skate like a champ.

. Mina is resilient, dedicated, and passionate. She has goals and the girl will achieve them.

Pro Hero - Adult Mina Headcanons

. Gets several tattoos and piercings.

. Starts a roller derby club with most of the girls from 1A.

. Loves going out to the hottest dance clubs just as much as she enjoys staying in and munching on take-out food with friends.

. The Horn Buddies club she formed with Eijiro has now expanded into regular society and both young heroes couldn't be more proud. Together they've formed a foundation that strives to help those with non-flashy, unconventional, or misunderstood quirks feel welcomed and loved.

. Does her best to shop small whenever she can. Mina wants to help her community in as many different ways as possible.

. Becomes a fashion icon for many small, just starting out, alternative clothing lines. They love her look and the standard she sets.

. Goes to fashion and runway shows with Momo on the regular. While Momo prefers buying right off the rack, Mina goes to thrift stores and buys items that are coming back into style.

. Does her best to stay in touch with her classmates. She really cherished the friendships she made and goes the extra mile to make sure everyone stays connected.

. Has told off Shoto's father. Sent the man an anonymous bag of flaming dog shit as well for making his son so damn stressed. Sorry, not sorry.

. As long as she isn't in the middle of a fight, Mina will always stop to take a photo with a fan or sign an autograph. In or out of costume, she doesn't care.

. In high school, Mina's room was always decked out for the holidays. She goes decoration crazy and it is always done well. But, now that she's an adult with that pro hero money and her own place, she's the best house on the block decorated for each and every holiday! Inside and out! Also throws holiday-themed parties.

. Got absolutely trashed with the BakuSquad one night and taught them all how to twerk. By the end of the lesson, she deemed Katsuki was the best of her students.

. Loves to drink. Is a lightweight. Katsuki and Eijiro have carried her home more times than they can count.

. Ei felt terrible about it. It took them both maturing for her to explain exactly why she reacted that way... and then asked him to do it again.

. Is likely to send NSFW texts and photos while people are indeed at work. She is a Pro Hero though so only certain people are allowed to have those photos. A scandal is the last thing she wants.

. Very good at communication and is not afraid to speak her mind about what she wants and needs out of a relationship and her sex life.

It was surprising in her eyes how your voice always seemed melodious, calm and at the same time so low. Peyan could fall asleep just by listening to your calming voice, with you close he did not want more than you to talk, talk about everything and nothing, about what you did in your day, what you talked about with your parents, about your subjects and even about your always exciting animes.

Like right now, they were in a part of the musashi temple at the end of a not-so-relevant Touman meeting.

“I really didn't think it would end like this, you know? I wanted to know a lot more about the villain of (insert favorite anime), it's disappointing ”you continued your talk playing with your boyfriend's fingers, you got lost drawing patterns without fixed lines.

A silence made you look up from your boyfriend's hand, meeting his soft, bright and almost lost gaze on you. Your cheeks did not take long to color, perhaps you had talked a lot and before I could excuse you, a short, soft and sweet kiss cut your voice.

"I could listen to you all my life, do not apologize and keep talking, I will always keep silent to listen to you well" said Peyan after the kiss, his cheeks reddish but his look dictated love and his words even more.

How the hell did I manage to fall in love with you more every day? With the emotions so alive in you you just pouted without even realizing it. Peyan saw you lost in your pretty face, your hair slightly ruffled by the wind, you wore his sweatshirt that seemed to cover you whole and as the emotion was noticeable in your eyes, you were excited to talk to him about your animes which he did not quite understand. But what he saw to be able to talk about it with you, and he hoped you would allow him to do it for a longer time.

"You are a fool Ryo" you whispered when you were closer to him, you could feel his warmth and how he hugged you carefully, it must be a sin to fall in love more every day "but I was telling you about this villain, they made him weaker and more alien in the end of the manga, and the protagonist won by pure script "

"I saw the last chapter but it doesn't quite convince me how they beat the villain"

With a smile and settling yourself better next to Peyan you proceeded to speak, your melodious and calm voice only altering itself with the emerging emotion, and thus they locked themselves in their own bubble giggling from time to time.

Nobody could get them out of that bubble.

It was late after leaving school, both of them walking side by side talking and even though it was quiet it was filled with your soft hums as you walked up the sidewalk. Pah-chin could only smile to see you jump when there were cracks you didn't want to step on, hear your giggle when you did it, and sulk when you couldn't. How are you so cute without needing much?

"Do you have a Touman Huru reunion tomorrow?" you questioned continuing your journey over the upper part of the areas where there were trees.

Pah-chin took your hand more firmly and gave you support to continue walking up the hill, he loved these moments.

"Yes but I'll stop by you later to go see movies together" Pah-chin replied without much difficulty.

"Brilliant!" you exclaimed stopping your journey to jump down from the top hooking your arms around his body, you heard the soft moan but you tightened it more when the hug corresponded to you, it was a lonely journey and they could do it without prying eyes "A long time ago I don't see your parents, oh! Do you think they like Huru now? "

Pah-chin just rolled her eyes and hugged you a little more before kissing you on the cheek, and continuing to walk.

"My parents love you and they were asking a lot about you, even I'm stupid I know they adore you"

Perhaps it may be the sunlight filtering through the curtains in your room that falls on your face softly, so softly that they hardly seem to bother you and give you a splendid shine. You seem to come out of the clouds, sent from heaven to earth.

Baji just keeps silent and remains static admiring completely how you seem so lost in all the class work that it has cost him horrors to finish and for which he almost begged the teacher to regulate his grade of the subject, which he tried to do and He tries to lie to himself that he does not expect your bright gaze on him along with your smile, he loves to see you smile.

"You have more than half the correct questionnaire Kei"

A feigned heavy sigh emerged from you and Baji couldn't help but laugh, it was so warm the afternoons studying, could it be considered study appointments?

Although the days he spends with his best friends are good and they figure in his memory, the days he spent with you in a park after school or in one of the two's rooms, both of them just relaxing and talking about whatever topic. occurred to them. The hot steam from the small place that emerged from the kitchen of the same had an exquisite aroma of food, specifically Ramen and was the most common scene in two young people every Thursday after school. Nahoya Kawata or better known as Smiley was sitting next to you, a short distance and near his feet his backpack. And she loved Thursdays because those days they had dates late into the night, and this one started eating Ramen. Knowing you and remembering your disappointed look, I take the matter between his hands or his fingers.

"Leave me little" Smiley asked, taking the chopsticks from your hands to split them in half, admiring your amazed look at the chopsticks now separated, and he felt a little more in love than yesterday "They're just chopsticks babe, don't look so amazed"

You can detect the soft and mischievous fun of him, and your heart beats warmly in your chest.

"But Naho you are great!" you say with a smile without seeing him, because your gaze was fixed on your plate of reddish broth Ramen, this time it would be spicy Ramen and next Thursday some random food.

Going out together from time to time was absolutely normal, even though they went out with his brother and his girlfriend other times on double dates and I knew how much you liked spending time with his brother's girlfriend, you seemed to have a lot of fun. Angry could only memorize your smiles in those moments and now take your expressions concentrated on the shelf in front of you on many small jars of nail polish various colors and shades, if he was honest with himself the tones could not distinguish them very well from others but you give your time there. He could hear the whispers and murmurs of the women around him, everyone he could hear said things like 'what a tender couple' 'they last a long time' 'oh how cute' and somehow they embarrassed him, but not enough to break your confidence in being walking by your side all this new cosmetics store and much more. For a few corridors when he finished selecting some orders from his Mother, he was in possession of a small purple basket.

"It's so difficult Yas!" You grumble slightly spitefully at the shelf you were going through from top to bottom.

"Why don't you choose a color that you don't have S / o-chan?" Angry questioned looking at all the nail polish colors.

Weighing the question, you took it and rummaged through all the enamels until you found one of bright turquoise color next to another a little more opaque and black, once with them you showed them with all the pride.

"These are so cute Yas!" You say excitedly leaving them in the basket and without even anticipating it, your boyfriend selected another one of a somewhat dark fuchsia pink color and you questioned him with your eyes.

"This color is cute and you don't have it among the ones you have at home, it looks like the color of your eyes"

They both had flushed cheeks and they continued walking through the aisles selecting some lip balms or hand moisturizers, it was nice to go shopping together.

I am firmly convinced that I will do the other characters and no one will be able to stop me, well if you are reading this stay hydrated and well fed, sleep well and now if bye!

♃ Whip up Makoto’s favourite foods, meatloaf and cherry pie. Unlike some other fellow Sailor Guardians she’s not a picky eater and has no least-favourite food, so why not challenge yourself to try something new or revisit an ingredient you thought you hated? You never know, you might grow to love it!

♃ Makoto’s very self-reliant, and her hobbies reflect her practical nature, particularly as she had to look after herself from a young age after the deaths of both her parents in a plane crash. She’s also intentionally pursued hobbies considered traditionally “feminine” out of concern that her outward appearance and mannerisms don’t convey who she is inside.

Her most oft-portrayed hobby is cooking, which is both something that brings her personal satisfaction and a way for her to express her love for the people closest to her - she shares her lunch with strangers, serves her friends fruit sandwiches & tea when they meet at her apartment, and daydreams about giving a personalised boxed lunch (bento) to her sweetheart. She’s also a natural teacher, showing the gang how to make curry (which becomes the one dish Usagi can make) and cookies, and showing Motoki how to make hayashi rice (“hashed beef”). Why not host a little dinner party or pot luck for your friends, teach yourself a new recipe (or teach someone else a favourite recipe of your own), or simply celebrate food by patronising a small cafe/bakery like Makoto dreams of owning someday?

She’s also a demonstably skilled sewist, making anything from stuffed toys (apparently, her specialty is teddy bears), to knitting, to bespoke patterns for her class’s maid cafe stall at their high school festival. If you’re a beginner, why not start with some simple DIYs or by altering clothing you already own/thrift, and if you’re experienced, now is a good time to revisit that project you have lying half-finished in the back of your crafts cupboard you keep saying you’ll finish someday when you unpick that one bit I SEE you there.

Makoto loves flowers and has quite a green thumb, perhaps influenced by the Japanese element she draws her powers from - wood. She tends to the strawberry patch at their high school with great success, and though she is often associated with roses, her favourite flower is actually the sasanqua (a type of camellia). She loves flowers so much that she dreams of being a florist someday, a dream she actually achieves in the live action! Pick up a new plant from a local nursery, fill your house with flowers from an independent florist, or start your own produce garden in your back yard, flower pots, or a small indoor terrarium/windowsill. If you don’t have the means to tend to a garden of your own, why not look into seed bombing with plants native to your specific area to combat invasive plant species. Or simply visit your favourite nursery, arboreum, or public garden to surround yourself with nature!

For sports, Makoto is proficient in martial arts, specifically karate (in the original anime) and judo (in the manga and Crystal). She’s also shown to be naturally gifted at ice skating thanks to her past life as Princess Jupiter, since it was a popular sport in the Moon Kingdom, pulling off even very difficult moves like lifting her partner over her head. Check out some local martial arts classes in your area or take some friends to the ice rink! She also enjoyed, and was quite good at, ballroom dancing, so take your partner or a small blue gal pal to some dance lessons - just not ballet, which she can’t quite finesse.

♃ Dress like Makoto for the day! Particularly in the first season, Makoto stuck mostly to “tomboyish” fashions, again reflecting her practicality and sporty side, rarely daring to wear skirts or dresses. However, as the series went on we learned that she in fact admired traditionally “feminine” clothes but feared they wouldn’t suit her. With encouragement from her friends like Usagi and role-models like Haruka, later seasons saw her branch out into a secondary style, with a more mature, “womanly” edge than the young, girlish styles of her friends - though she still enjoyed her original “boyish” fits. Wardrobe staples include casual jackets/hoodies, cable knit sweaters, slacks, shorts, loafers, and sneakers, and later midi skirts, turtlenecks, and bodycon mini-dresses. She wore a lot of green in varying shades, but also orange, teal, and increasingly pink.

As Sailor Jupiter, her image colours were dark green and “sugar pink”, and she wore green ankle boots accented with bright white laces. Her most iconic accessories were her pink rose earrings which, unique amongst the Sailor Guardians, she wore both transformed and not, even throwing them once as a makeshift weapon. Her nails were painted apple/avocado green from her second transformation onwards. Her hair, which to the disbelief of her teachers was naturally curly, was usually worn in a high ponytail with a bobble hairtie (plain teal in the 90s anime, green with petal-like accents in the manga/Crystal/PGSM) and two locks falling over her ears, though she did sometimes swap the hairtie for a ribbon or scrunchie.

Makoto didn’t seem to wear much makeup but did wear cologne/perfume, almost certainly rosen/floral; in fact, it’s one of the first things Usagi notices about her when they meet. If you don’t already have your own signature scent, browse for some local indie perfumers to find something that speaks to you - or look up how to make your own!

♃ Makoto wears a belt of potpourri around her waist in the manga and live action, so you could try mixing a blend of your own dried flower petals and displaying it in a bowl or tucking it in sachets amongst your clothes. In addition to the obvious rose petals, consider including oak leaves or pine needles for an earthy, woodsy note.

The first few Nintendo games, card games, and the anime were massively popular with children, so it’s not a surprise the empire continued to build upon that. Additional generations of games, manga, and anime booted up every few years, updating the region that the story takes place and adding a new set of over one-hundred pokemon. Needless to say, this pattern accumulated a rather loyal fandom that would avidly wait for and speculate about the release of each new roster of pokemon. But within the general cultural consciousness, the first 150 that correlated directly with the region of Kanto would be the first pick for what could be bankable to a movie-going audience.

Fast forward to the year 2018 of the release of a game completely separate from the rest of the mainline Pokemon games called Detective Pikachu. This game was deemed popular enough for an immediate Hollywood film adaptation which was also massively successful. Detective Pikachu, the film, while made as a labor of love by Pokemon fans for Pokemon fans, still had to maximize profits. So, in order to appeal to a more general audience who may not be the most familiar with the closer details of the Pokemon world, they stuck to the original 150 Kanto roster from the 90’s. And as mentioned, audiences of all types loved the film. But this begs the question of just how far along the generational Pokemon timeline could still be bankable in terms of a live action Hollywood movie. Would your everyday casual moviegoer be interested in seeing a film featuring any of the pokemon released post-Kanto? In every game, the regional setting itself is in a way its own character and story. These regions are based off of real-life locations, which is part of their appeal.

Kanto is largely considered to be the center of Japan due to the fact that many landmarks known to a wider international demographic exist in that area. It’s where Tokyo, the country’s capital, lives as well as Mt. Fuji and the Aokigahara forest that surrounds it. Since the regions following Kanto were also based off real world locations, they all contained geographic landmarks that were widely known about. But which one is the most well-known? Almost automatically, the Jhoto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh regions can be automatically eliminated from the question. Again, when an international audience thinks about Japan, they think about the aforementioned landmarks from Kanto. They don’t think about the other regions of Japan if they don’t already live there. That leaves the remaining four regions, Unova, Kalos, Alola, and Galar, which are the stand ins for New York, Isle de France, Hawaii, and England respectively. These are all states/provinces/regions that attract large draws from tourist crowds all over the world, making them good fits for Hollywood film settings.

One might guess that Unova would be the obvious next choice. New York City is already a cultural staple and the location of many Hollywood films and television shows. However, if one still wants to take 90’s nostalgia into account, Unova would be ruled out, as although the original 150 could still be included, they would be bogged down by that region’s main focus, the Gen V pokemon. Generation VII, the generation of Alola, brought back many of the old favorites. They rebooted many recognizable pokemon from Kanto such as Raichu, Meowth, Persian, Vulpix, and Ninetails, but kept them fresh by giving them interesting redesigns specific to Alola. The most recent generation, Gen VIII, or Pokemon: Sword and Shield, continued this tradition, taking pokemon from previous generations and updating their designs. In Gen VIII’s case, they were redesigned as Galarian natives. However, Alola had a lot of the more nostalgic species upfront. They kept Pikachu, the franchise’s most iconic pokemon looking the same in appearance to keep the brand recognizable. This would keep from alienating a market that might be less familiar with later generations. If ever there should be a Detective Pikachu sequel, Alola is the place to set it.

Advice on Making Good Creepypasta OCs

So, as it’s about to be the start of the Spookiest Time Of The Year, by which I mean the Halloween season, by which I mean the beginning of August…

Boy does Halloween season start earlier and earlier every year, and yet nobody ever complains about it like they do Christmas. I suppose that a holiday about self-expression and weirdness is probably more welcome exposure-wise than a holiday about conformity and tradition, but that’s for another post.

Anyhoo, since it’s Almost Time, I figured I might as well do an advice guide on how to make some good Creepypasta OCs. Because, when created from scratch as characters rather than emerging from a “main” creepypasta, most of them tend to be Usual Deviantart Characters + Warmed Over Slasher Movie Cliches. And while that has its charm, I think we can do better.

So, what is my advice? Follow me after the break!

One of the main problems I see is, again, there’sso much aesthetic interbreeding, hence why you see so many Deviantart-lite pasta OCs, because so many of them come from Deviantart and copy the “pattern” they see from other Pasta OCs.

Well, first off, draw directly from the source for Creepypasta inspiration. Because, despite is use widening, the term Creepypasta does bring up what I would call a “house feel,” but a lot of people don’t know where that comes from so they end up not quite understanding the core of why it feels unique.

The long and short of it is, Creepypasta draws from forteana + weird fiction. So, for the former, look at the various testimonies of IRL-type supernatural or generally strange stuff, cryptids like Mothman or the Hopkinsville Goblins; bizarre natural phenomenae like strange rains or bizarre locations; or IRL terrifying cults like the Solar Temple or the Ripping Crew, and so-on.

For the latter, Lovecraft’s always a good place to start; because despite his notoriously bad (Like, even for its day) racism, the man was always good at setting a scene and creating an atmosphere and very specific feel. And check out his contemporaries too, like William Hope Hodgson; Robert Chambers or the excellent story The Night Wire, or modern weird fiction like the manga Fourteen or the works of Junji Ito. Or check out some of the more odd horror films that fit under the lable of “weird fiction,” which I will likely eventually make their own post on, but I’ll give Phantasm; Videodrome, Tourist Trap and Suspiria as a few very good examples.

But, a lot of people draw only from fiction, so my next piece of advice would be draw from yourself. Every creator brings their particular fears and aesthetic interests to the table, it’s what makes them unique, so one might ask, “What are yours?”

To talk of other Creepypasta characters, Harmburger comes from Jonathan Wojcic’s fascination with juxtposing cartoonish whimsy with absolute nightmare with hints of social satire, and Candle Cove comes from Kris Straub’s fascination with the slippery nature of memory. Find what sorts of looks you like, but also what subject terrifies and fascinates you. Even if that results in; like; a Homestuck Troll who jumps out of toilets to grab you or a buff guy with a Jojo stand that uses illegal wrestling moves, it’s still more interesting than the usual warmed-over kinda thing.

Of course, that’s only half the battle, inspiration. The rest is thinking of the character as an isolated character, able to exist independently of a work (Which a lot of Creepypasta antagonists aren’t).

So, the advice becomes think about what makes your character different from others, rather than similar. And I’m not just talking about “Mine has a bow on it!” Look at Slender Man, Harmburger, RED, the Rake, ect. They’re all wildly different, even in terms of shillouette, so go for distinct first.

If you want a quick starting point for uniqueness, try going non-humanoid with your concept; because I’m shocked at how few non-humanoids there are as Creepypasta Ocs even though they make up a good proportion of the Iconic Creepypasta Foes. Or go even weirder and make them an abstract force; like Uzumaki’s Spirals or the eponymous “show” of Candle Cove. Tho this stretches the definition of “OC,” you’d be surprised...

And, that’s another thing, add personality; not lore. Because, a horror creature gets less scary the more is revealed about it, but that doesn’t mean that; despite what Highbrow Horror People like @afloweroutofstone say; good horror can’t come from them as characters. In fact, I’d argue that great antagonists/monsters are one of the things that makes horror great; and an area incredibly neglected by that branch of Serious Analysts who don’t love monsters, but that’s for another post.

You can give an idea of how they’d act; what they’d do in a certain situation; what their motives and possible origins are; but never fully tip your hand. Always leave a “space” in the ideas behind them to perhaps fill out later; but usually to keep a perpetual mystery. Always keep ‘em guessing, but also be sure that what they do see and what is revealed is interesting and fascinating in the way the best characters are.

And, that leads to my last idea, know what stories can be told with them. Because, as much as I love characters-as-worldbuilding-elements, when it comes to rubber hitting the road; the best way to make a character compelling is to tell the dang story with them, and given they’re meant to presumably exist in multiple stories the way the most recurring Creepypasta characters are; or heck even the most recurring characters in general like Conan or Sherelock Holmes; you need to figure out what sorts of stories they appear in and what they do in those stories.

Relevant to the point before this; there always should be enough mysterious threads that you don’t quite reveal the ends to; but in every story you use them in; the reader should have enough information to understand what’s going on in the A Plot, even if the larger world has aspects left a mystery. That’s the difference between Alien and Prometheus, and that’s one of the big differences between a good Creepypasta and a bad one...

Illustration Article 07: Shonen Jump Mangaka 01 (Akira Toriyama)

From 1968, the magazine Weekly Shonen Jump (also called Shonen Jump) has published hundreds of manga titles, and has been the most popular manga anthology for decades. Its circulation peaked from the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s, but it isn’t going out of style by any means—at least not with its demographic. The target demographic is middle school and high school boys, and the primary genre is action/adventure, but it has reached beyond that audience. Some series also focus on sports, historical setting, fantasy setting, or include supernatural elements. Even those outside of manga-reading circles would likely recognize a couple of titles. Manga such as YuGiOh!, Naruto, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, and One Piece have permeated art and culture in America as well as Japan.

For all serialized works, it takes immense energy and diligence. The “Weekly” part of Weekly Shonen Jump isn’t for nothing! Every week, a mangaka and their assistants create ~20 pages per week; the manga artist must also create chapter covers, volume covers, and supplemental illustrations. A manga artist may collaborate with a writer that plans out the story. Otherwise, the mangaka is solely responsible for directing the story and art. …Well, there are editors and supervisors that check in with artists periodically to review page outlines and story progression…. but, y’know, it’s still a lot of work!

Our first artist is Akira Toriyama (b. 1955), creator of Dr. Slump (1980-1984) and Dragon Ball (1984-1995), and concept artist for the video games Dragon Quest (series) and Chrono Trigger (1995). The manga and anime series of Dragon Ball were very popular in the U.S., and Toriyama’s work contributed to the immense popularity of Shonen Jump in the 80s/90s.

I used to dislike Toriyama—I thought that his stories were just boring, repetitive battle arcs. Which they are… but only occasionally! I greatly underestimated Toriyama’s artistic abilities, especially his solidity of form and environments. The depth of space contained in his establishing and environment shots can be more dramatic than those of Tezuka’s and Nagai’s. And though the facial designs of Toriyama’s characters can be simplistic or cartoony like Tezuka/Nagai, the bodies themselves are more closely aligned to human anatomy. Combining the iconic nature of cartooning with the fundamentals of reality makes for a very solid art style.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to find many high-res pictures of Toriyama’s manga pages. A lot of Dragon Ball’s appeal comes from Toriyama’s staging of fight scenes—so you’ll just have to take my word for it, or search it out. The majority of what I’ll show will be single panels and colored illustrations, but many of the qualities I mention are also present in his comic work.

The first example is a piece of concept art for Chrono Trigger. One of Toriyama’s underappreciated talents (and something I didn’t realize until recently!) is his appealing creature/animal/alien designs. I’m counting five different creatures—some are realistic, some are merges of two animals, and some are completely fantastical like that purple mole thing in the corner.

Even though most of the space is occupied in a short corridor, the implication of depth is seen from the lines of stairs on the left and right side. And even though this area takes place in a cave, the presumably muddy colors are balanced out well by brighter and deeper hues. The orange-brown walls and blue-brown water provide a subtle contrast, while the saturated bursts of orange, green, and purple supports the cartoon-fantasy adventure theme.

The second example, I think, is from a short-run series. Another motif of Toriyama’s illustrations involves characters riding in or on something—this not only includes cars and motorcycles, but ostriches and dragons as well. I’m personally very inexperienced with mechanical designs. It takes considerable practice in order to make vehicles look solid and moving space. And then to have characters sitting in/on the surface requires a solid understanding of form and perspective.

The third example—a decapitation! I know the Dragon Ball has a lot of near-invincible characters, and the more ruthless ones (such as Vegeta shown here) can mow down weaker some characters easily. Large, black sound effects frame the action in between. In some action scenes, Toriyama heavily uses LINES—can you tell? If you look around this single panel, you can see speed lines in several different directions. First is that of the background’s diagonal lines, leading the eye downward; Vegeta’s hair and clothes also feature the speed lines, demonstrating his quick movement. The next lines come from the decapitated head with lines going in an upper-right direction. And lastly is Vegeta’s left hand after the swing, going straight upward. There are also vibrating lines around the alien’s body, showing an abrupt stop in movement.

1. Nagoya’s famous cafe breakfast

Nagoya is renowned for the Kissaten Morning, where Kissaten means a Japanese-style cafe and morning refers to breakfast. A famous Kissaten chain is Komeda’s Coffee, but Nagoya’s streets, such as the Sakae and Nagoya Station area, have numerous Kissaten for you to choose from. The breakfast sets usually come with free toasted bread or sandwiches when you order a cup of coffee, with some places serving you ogura toast, a Nagoya breakfast dish with red beans and butter on toasted bread. This is definitely a great way to kick start a day of sightseeing!

2. The golden dolphins of Nagoya Castle

Nagoya, though a huge city, is a place filled with immense history. One of the best places to learn more about Nagoya’s history is at Nagoya Castle. It was built in 1612 by order of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the ruler who ushered in Japan’s Edo period (1603 - 1868). Located at Shiyakusho Station on the Meijo Line subway, among the important artefacts found in Nagoya Castle are the Kinshachi, or the golden dolphins, that are found on both ends of the main ridge of the castle’s roof. There are English explanations within Nagoya Castle, as well as guided tours in English.

3. The oldest television tower in Japan

Built in 1954, the 180-metre-high (590-foot-high) Nagoya Television Tower is the oldest television tower in Japan. With an indoor observatory at the 90-metre (295-foot) mark and an outdoor observatory at the 100-metre (328-foot) mark, you will enjoy a splendid view of the whole of Nagoya city and the mountains surrounding it. Not only is the view from the observatory fantastic, the tower is also beautifully illuminated at night. Nagoya Television Tower can either be accessed from Hisayaodori Station of the Meijo Line subway or Sakae Station of the Higashiyama Line subway, both 10 minutes from Nagoya Station.

4. Walking on a spaceship at Oasis 21

If you access Nagoya Television Tower via Sakae subway station, you will notice a unique building in front of the tower. Don’t worry, there are no aliens on board! The spaceship-like building is called Oasis 21, and is a 4-storey eco-friendly complex with a bus terminal, shopping mall, and a park. The Spaceship-Aqua located on the top floor allows you to walk around the glass roof and is also lit up at night. The sight of Nagoya Television Tower and Oasis 21 together is one of the iconic views of Nagoya. It is recommended that you visit both places together.

5. Nagoya’s best shopping district - Osu

Located near Kamimaezu subway station, just 20 minutes from Nagoya Station, Osu has everything you can ask for. Cafés, restaurants, and street food to fill your stomach, subculture shops for your favourite manga items, shops with the latest fashion products, and even arcades. There is also an awarded Napoli Pizza chef’s restaurant and casual food stall on the backstreet of Osu shopping arcade. On top of that, Osu Kannon, a historical temple, is also found within Osu district. You definitely have to visit this place.

6. Higashiyama Zoo and Botanic Gardens

Higashiyama Zoo and Botanic Gardens has over 500 species of animals and even an amusement park within the compound. It was also the first zoo in Japan to have a koala exhibit, one of the favourites today. There are various events carried out throughout the year, such as the Sakura Festival in spring. It is accessible via Higashiyama subway station, just 30 minutes from Nagoya Station.

7. The historical Atsuta Shrine

Just 6 minutes from Nagoya Station via the Meijo subway line, Atsuta Shrine is located right outside Jingumae Station. The serene atmosphere from the tall trees and chirping birds once you step into the shrine compound makes it hard to believe you are still in the city. With over 1,900 years of history, Atsuta Shrine has been a place of worship for a long period of time, making it one of the most important shrines in Japan. You can also try the kishimen noodles - another of Nagoya’s famous dishes - at the eatery within the shrine compound.

8. Nagoya’s original pork cutlet - miso katsu

Miso katsu is a dish with miso gravy poured over pork cutlet, and is another one of Nagoya’s dishes. Among the numerous canteens and restaurants in Nagoya that are famous for miso katsu is a restaurant chain called Yabaton, with outlets located at convenient places such as Nagoya Station and in Osu district.

Another of Nagoya’s famous dishes is tebasaki, or chicken wings. The two greatest franchise stores in Nagoya are Furaibou and Yamachan, both located at various places around the city. If you do not have time to visit both stores, you can make your way to Nagoya Station where there are takeaway stalls of both Furaibou and Yamachan at the station’s building, Kintetsu Pass’e, and Meitetsu Hyakkaten Department Store respectively.

Based on the lore of the popular tabletop gaming universe Warhammer 40,000, which is set in a ludicrously dystopian future, the cruddy side of the internet is filled with images of Trump as the iconic Emperor of Mankind, immortal ruler of the human empire bringing his never-ending war to the undesirables. Feels like satire, right? It isn’t.

The Anti-Obama Oil Painter Now Thinks Trump Is The New Messiah

Jon McNaughton is possibly one of history’s greatest artists. Not because he created anything breathtaking or profound or thought-provoking, mind, but because his works are some of the goddamn funniest examples of religious right-wing bathos.

Jon McNaughtonFirst and foremost, why would you plant a tree three feet in front a place where people will be sitting?

This lovely painting, titled You Are Not Forgotten, features Herr Conditioner and proves that you can’t make Trump look warm and charming even if you draw him yourself. But the real beauty of McNaughton’s art lies in the fact that he’s just a really, really hacky political cartoonist with a better brush stroke game. He often boasts about the number of “symbols” he manages to stuff into a single canvas. Here, the theme is unity. That’s why a not-that-keen eye can will spot that Everyman Trump is looming over a working-class family (whom he’s screwed) as they plant a flower (which he’s going to kill) in front of a crowd of veterans and soldiers (whom he dishonors), disabled people (whom he doesn’t care about), black people (whom he doesn’t like), various cabinet members (whom he’s fired), police officers (whom he’s insulted), and laborers (whom he doesn’t pay).

But McNaughton didn’t make his name by trimming half a dozen inches off of Trump’s waist. He became a conservative darling by taking dumps on President Obama for a solid eight years. Here’s his interpretation of Obama’s domestic policy:
