1. Are you named after anyone?
No, although my middle name is a family name.
2. When was the last time you cried?
I think a few weeks ago? I watched "Everything, Everywhere, All at Once" and KJBSDFKBJD. Like that movie is such a fun mix of WTF is even going on craziness and contemplating the point of existence and exploring complicated family feelings and the end is weirdly heartwarming--particularly the interactions between the mother and daughter, which is what really got me. And I was watching with one of my best friends and like right after the movie ended he was like "if we were rocks you'd be the googly eyes"--which makes no sense if you haven't seen the movie but that made me cry again because kajdfbksjbf it was so oddly sweet. (Though that was a mixture of hysterical laughter and crying ajsdjfsvjhv in a good way though!)
3. Do you have kids?
nope. maybe one day if i ever get my life together LOL
4. Do you use sarcasm a lot?
idk if it's a lot?? though i'm probably single-handedly responsible for teaching my brother sarcasm (he's 7 years younger than me so when he was learning would have been right as i was entering those peak sarcasm years LOL)
sarcasm is still deeply engrained in me though, and i nowadays when i use it i definitely pay more attention to how people react to it (ie whether they picked up on it) because i tend to deliver it in a very matter-of-fact voice. like, one of my favourite stupid sarcastic comments to make is whenever something weird weather-wise happens i'll be "but thank god climate change is fake, right?" and KJABFDKSJBD i've gotten some WEIRD LOOKS saying that one around ppl who don't know me that well and then i have to explain myself 😭
5. What sports do you play/have played?
i used to figure skate!! my mom was a coach when i was growing up, so i would joke that i lived part-time at the ice rink. it was kind of inevitable 😂. but i was never good at the jumps. i prefered ice dance or synchronized skating (think synchronized swimming but on the ice)
and i also used to play hockey!? very different environment LOL and my hockey teammates would sometimes tease me for showing up to a game in a dress after skating practice on days i had both but it was all in good fun
now...now i really SHOULD do something kajsdkbfsj
6. What’s the first thing you notice about someone?
i...really have no idea.
7. What’s your eye color?
hazel? i think?
8. Scary movies or happy endings?
happy endings. scary movies don't really freak me out but i guess i just find them sort of...low-reward? i'm not a movie person to begin with because it's hard for me to get invested in the characters in such a short amount of time. with horror movies that's even harder because they're all about shock value instead of getting to know the characters
9. Any special talents?
i am very very good at puns. does that count? 😂
10. Where were you born?
canada. on the west coast
11. What are your hobbies?
when i have energy/motivation i really enjoy cooking (or baking, but with baking i have to actually measure ingredients and with cooking i just sort of go with the flow). my new apartment is going to have space for a dishwasher--which really is the most exciting thing in my life right now--so i'm hoping that motivates me to cook more!!
12. Do you have pets?
yes!!! i have a ginger cat and her name is Curie (namesake Marie Curie because i'm a proud little nerd like that). I love her she's so stupid and has tried to eat plastic TOO MANY TIMES but every morning and night she will curl up on my chest when i'm in bed and she's just a precious bean
13. How tall are you?
5'5.5 (166cm). but i would have been taller if my spine had known how to grow straight 😔
14. Favorite subject in school?
science!! i had the same science teacher in high school from grades 8-10 (aka the only teacher in the french immersion department who was really qualified to teach it 😂) and i ADORED HER. from day one i was hooked--like she even made syllabus day fun. so i owe my love of science in part to her, really.
in university i realized i liked chemistry best amongst the sciences, so that was my major. and my favourite class i ever took was intro to quantum chemistry (which is really just quantum physics but the math was geared more towards what us chemistry students were familiar with)
15. Dream job?
okay, avoiding the typical "i do not dream of labour" answer...i really don't know. which is a problem. like i genuinely have no idea what i could do long-term that would actually make me happy and i just hope i figure it out at some point akjsdkfsjbd

2023 FFRC - April 🌷
It's finally hammock weather in Western Canada, folks! And we've been enjoying watching the hockey playoffs from the patio entertainment area we set up once the snow melted - well, I don't know if the word "enjoying" should be used when the team we hate most in the world is moving on to the 2nd round - but it's been exciting anyway.
We've also been sick at our house for most of the month but we're finally starting to come out of it. My Bethy still sounds like Miley Cyrus when she talks - but other than some low-key coughs, she's no longer down with a fever, so we're happy about that.
Continuing along - it's rugby season - so that means a lot of driving to away games to cheer on the Spartans (which means a LOT of reading). I've read more this month than I have ever read. I was also really focused on finishing up the 'extreme' tasks at the @fanfic-reading-challenge - and I finished a few days ago. I'll keep going until I've completed all the tasks in the challenge but I can do that over the course of the rest of the year. 🎉

So as you can see, this month I read 2.3 million words, cracking over 7 mill total - and read 922 chapters (of various lengths), and 107 full (and sometimes long) stories. I was working on some fandom challenges and let me tell you - it was harder than it looked!

I'm not a Carmy/Sydney fangirl and that is what this fandom is saturated with, so I was HAPPY to find that someone wrote a story where Carmy meets a girl at an meeting and they just GET each other. And neither one is a perfect human - she doesn't SAVE him from himself or anything. They just bear each other's burdens and are THERE for eachother. This is just gorgeous.

Hello, Sunshine by Wonderlandleighleigh (Lenny/Midge - M 20/20)
Summary: It's June of 1962, and to celebrate being a year clean, Lenny rents a little house in Malibu, inviting Midge to join him.
Why you should read: I got back on my nonsense with the season premiere of TMMM and since I got 3 minutes of Lenny and now have to wait like 8 episodes to see him again, I thought I'd reread old favourites. This one is set post S4 sometime in the future - when Lenny has been in rehab and wants to make things right with Midge. It's SO good and captures their characters perfectly and makes me want to sit on the beach with good friends (and a handsome Jewish comic).

Summary: a case study on what happens when a bratty sub spends eighteen months in quarantine and gets so desperate she will have sex with the shy boy from boarding school that promises her orgasms. aka muggle panville tinder au during the great panini
Why you should read: FIRSTLY - Neville is one of my most favourite characters in all of Potterdom and I wanted him to be happy almost from the very first moment we met him. Secondly - it's funny. Hot and funny and sweet. I mean, Neville wants to save her dying(dead) plants that happened to be in the back of her tinder pictures. He's a delight. And this fic is also a delight. You should read it!

The Raven - For the Rare and Radiant Maiden Series by @drollicpixiefanfic (Wenvier - E 3 fics)
Summary: Xavier Thorpe didn’t exactly expect Wednesday to use the cell phone he purchased for her. It was a ridiculous idea, a whim, a fancy. But something had compelled him to try. So, it was with some shock, two weeks into their break from Nevermore, that Xavier’s phone buzzed on his nightstand.
Why you should read: I'm certain I rec'd this before - but now there is a third story that came out this month (and IT IS AMAZING) - so I could just rec that third story, or I could link you to the whole thing and make you reread it (just like I did). Post season 1 - kinky hot but super tender as well. Funny. Just lovely. and I'm never going to complain about a Xavier PoV. He's my fave. Read this one - if you're not into Wenvier yet, make this your first foray. Come ship with me!

top five favorite hockey games!
okokokok I actually had to think about this because I am a traumatized Leafs fan and I do actually have positive hockey memories so in no particular order....
EDIT: adding a read more bc I’m an asshole who wrote an essay hahahaha oops?
Round 1 Game 6 2023 Playoffs, Toronto vs Tampa and the Leafs got through to the second round of the playoffs for the first time since I was a toddler! That game was insane, and I can still hear the broadcast saying "they finally caught lightning in a bottle" when we won in overtime... I still have chills
Game 4 of that same series, I went through so many emotions during that game! I was in Maple Leafs Square in the cold for the first 2 periods, then I was ditched by my friend when we were down 3 goals (fair on her part) so I decided to head home. I listened to the game on the radio on the way home when we mounted the comeback, then I watched us win it in overtime at home with my Dad. So I EXPERIENCED that game in every way, shape, and form, which I will never forget
The 2010 Olympics Men's Gold Medal Game, this game is so special to so many people but I have a different memory because I live in Toronto and I couldn't stay up to watch the game live. So the next morning my Dad didn't tell me the results of the game and I watched the recording, so I got to experience that moment when Crosby scored in overtime (sensing a pattern?), which even as a kid, I knew was special
2023/24 Leafs Home Opener, I had shitty nosebleed seats and we went back and forth with the Habs (and I hate the Habs) for all 3 periods, and ended up going to a shootout and STILL WINNING! You can't always afford to go to these games so I was glad I splurged to go to this one, which ended up being everything I want in a Hockey Game; lots of back-and-forth action and the home team pulling out the win
Scotiabank Arena PWHL game, AKA the Battle on Bay Street! This is the inaugural season of the Profesional Women's Hockey League and I'm really proud to be a founding season ticket holder, so to be able to sit rinkside at the biggest arena in the area and watch the team that already means so much to me dominate on home ice against Montreal (another pattern forms), surrounded by fans who are so excited to see them succeed, with my two favourite people in the world, was so so so special and I will literally never forget it
Honourable Mention! My younger brother got the 12-year-old equivalent of a Gordie Howe hat trick (1 Goal, 1 Assist, 1 fight 1 penalty) in house league... so not very good hockey... but my entire family lost it and I will never forget that game!

The Vapors song, Turning Japanese, the song lyrics are all about a couple, one has gone away and the other is obsessed with their photo to the photo they wish a doctor to take a picture of their loved one from the inside so they can see inside them as well. This reminds me of all the research done on Prince Harry to manipulate him. The chorus turning Japanese, to me , makes no sense. However, when asked, here is their explanation, that it is a love song about someone who lost their girlfriend and was going slowly crazy. Madam always sports a wig, they vary in colour, shape, size, style and length. The mother of all wigs, meaning a whopper of one, she wore to the OYW opening, in the purple feauxmegnancy maternity dress. That wig was as though she was hiding inside it and l think she meant to, not knowing what her reception would be. I think we have YET to her her without her wearing a wig, or walking without her sassy wiggle, although sometimes she greatly exaggerates it.
My first thought when l read this was The Wiggles, hugely popular with the very young set, like Prince Louis’ age, costumes, music etc etc all very colourful and fun! The Rugby World Cup is this Saturday in Japan, check your time zone for match time! England 🏴 is matched South Africa 🇿🇦. Zara and Mike Tindall, HES a rugby veteran, Peter Phillips, her brother and Prince Harry are all due to attend! Great fun! In yesterday’s riddle there were hints, l hate to say this but l fear this clue is telling us of not the drunken weekend game type of fistfight, but her gate crashing and forcing herself into the mix, totally again destroying anything Harry finds join in. It is on Remembrance Sunday, November 10/2019 🇬🇧 There is of course “In Flanders Field” also by John McRae, here in Canada . We are all called to remember the fallen and the veterans and their loved ones, Remembrance Day in Canada 🇨🇦 on November 11/2019.
We all signify our remembering by wearing the poppy put out by the legion. My father, who had trained for the medical corps during WWII saiid, the poppies often are lost, they slip off the coat easily, you look down and oh, my poppies gone. He used to say, that’s in remembering how quickly soldiers lost their mates , they were together fighting and in a moment they look and their fellow soldier was dead or mortally wounded. I implore each of you to take time out in Remembrance of what was given for all of our freedoms we take so incredibly for granted.

I remember one of the times l was in Scotland, there were signs everywhere for ceilidhs and pantos. I have had the pleasure of being at several of each. The issue of the royal balcony, historically, they have been fabulous and everyone took their place as their royal status dictated. There was never ever a jostle for power in something so visual in my recollection. TTC balcony was so incredibly obvious that HMTQ had her back, front, side, all around her she was guarded from any contact with madam. What is something you’ve accomplished that you are proud of: I know it sounds odd but I am still thankful that I got through senior year of high school because it was a struggle. My grades were great - they always were - but school never came easy to me and especially not testing, specifically, and so most of my senior year was spent skipping 2nd period so I could cry in the bathroom. Don’t get me wrong; I had a nice, mundane, average high school experience - no bullying, little-to-no drama, and friends I loved to varying degrees but still very much enjoyed being with each day. I enjoyed high school, and I was that kid that enjoyed learning and enjoyed the challenge of advanced classes, for the most part. Just, some of the school aspect was a soul-sucking bitch that I just couldn’t handle properly those last few months.

hello there sunshine, it is headcanons time
I love these things, thank you so much! It almost took me longer to choose among the ships that to come up with some headcanon, so I’m sorry if I’m replying just now. I’ll go with my rare pairs because I shuck with headcanons. On a side note, they are hard, but I enjoy so much doing them so if you feel like asking for more, I’m here.
SANSA X HARROLD (asoiaf - modern!AU)1. Harrold is the ultimate jock. Really, he is the kind of person who can play every sport you can think about, and be a pro in them, though, his only exceptions are winter sports. And especially ice skating. The first time he was at the Starks’ for Christmas, someone proposed a ‘girls vs boys’ hockey match which ended up with lots of Harrold’s blackmail material on Sansa’s phone. 2. Sansa is seriously frightened about how well Harrold gets along with Arya. She’s not jealous, she’s just aware that nothing good can come from their friendship. 3. Harrold carries Sansa’s bags every time she drags him to the mall. By now, he doesn’t even bother any more about pretending to be annoyed with that. 4. Sansa has a crush on Harrold since the first time she saw him when both Harrold and Robb were in high school, and they were rivals in football matches. Of course, he doesn’t have to know it, does he?5. Harrold punched Petyr in the face when he knew about the awkward kiss they shared once Sansa was in the Vale for Christmas.
LUKE X PENELOPE (Criminal Minds)1. Penelope doesn’t want to admit to herself in the first place to have her head over the heels for Luke, so she keeps to find dates for him. Everyone else is so done with this. 2. Luke is an excellent profiler, but a disaster of a human being when it comes to him. He can give advice and foreshadow things for the others, but when these things concern him, he’s completely clueless. He’s sure Penelope figured out his feelings for her and isn’t interested. 3. “I’ll use Google until you ask Luke out.” AKA what JJ and Emily say to Penelope everytime they need her. 4. Luke asks Dave dates advice. Dave, being Dave, books a table for two at his favourite Italian restaurant in DC. Luke, instead of asking Penelope out, pretends it’s an undercover mission. Penelope figures out it’s not in half a second but says nothing. 5. After a mission, Luke comes back only to find Penelope on his couch, cuddling with both her cat and his dog, and seriously, after having caught a serial killer, it’s the purest image ever and helps him to remember why he chose this job in the first place.
GIULIANO X VANESSA (Da Vinci’s Demons)1. “You can marry your children for political alliances, your brother and I belong together.” Something that Vanessa very likely would say to Lorenzo. It’s pratically canon tbqh2. Giuliano looms in the corners of Leonardo’s workshop every time he portrays Vanessa. (in the show Leonardo is bi and had a sort of romance with Vanessa which is the only reason why this headcanon exists.)3. Secret marriage. Just because they can do it; it’s not even something they planned. One morning Giuliano wakes up, and tells Vanessa “let’s get married”, and she agrees.4. Only Nico, Zoroaster and Leonardo know, which also means that they don’t lose an occasion to call her “Monna De’ Medici”. Giuliano loves it.5. In this headcanon, Giuliano doesn’t die. After the Pazzis’ conjuring, Giuliano tells his brother they married, and he and Vanessa leave for Rome where they raise their child.
FLAUREL (htgawm)1. They don’t argue. Not since Frank entered law school as well. They turn everything into a lawsuit. It helps them both with their studies. 2. It doesn’t work, and they become pretty mean toward each other. But made up sex had been invented for this reason. 3. Once, Frank made a mistake to finish the coffee without going out and buying it. He slept on the couch for the following week. (“You are breastfeeding, you can’t even drink coffee.” “I need to know there’s coffee at home!”) 4. “Frank stop to spoil our child!” He’s not going to stop. 5. Asher is always at their place. They don’t even care also because Asher loves to babysit and by now Frank refers to him as “our adult son”.
CRYSTAL X MAXIMUS (Inhumans) this can be angst-ish, but I don’t even know1. Crystal kind of hates Medusa because she knows Maximus was in love with her.2. Lockjaw never liked Maximus, which, usually, would have brought Crystal do not trust the man herself. She blamed her dog behaviour on the fact that Maximus never tried to establish a relationship with him. 3. When he takes the Moon, she tries to make him reason about the consequences of his actions.4. Maximus cares about Crystal, but his blinded by his thirst for power and doesn’t listen to her. He secretly wants to make her his queen.5. When BlackBolt comes on Earth without Maximus, Crystal attacks her brother-in-law. She, of course, doesn’t want to hurt him, though she’s too outraged to think straight especially because she is aware that she won’t be able to go back on the Moon to rescue and free Maximus.

I finally watched “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows” and I wrote down all my reactions:
Here it goes... COWABUNGA MY TURTLE DUDES.
Ooooh I love the use of ninja throwing stars for the Paramount stars.
I’m also digging the music.
TURTLE FORMATION
Omg, Mickey, no squirrel formation. (I don’t want to see those creepy squirrels from the 2012 series.)
Honestly, even though the plot of the 2014 film wasn’t great (hopefully this one will be better), they had the personalities down to a tee, and it’s great to see that’s still the case.
The way they depict the sibling relationship between Leo, Raph, Donnie and Mickey is so awesome to watch. Not to forget: the fact that they actually act like teenagers is such a plus.
Case in point: Donnie repeatedly telling Raph to “do it do it do it do it do it [the shellskateboarding thing]”. I love it.
Hahahaah, Kevin the pizza guy. Such a nice Kevin Eastmann cameo!
Donnie: “When I say Knicks you say Go.”
I’m reminded of the failed “When I say Vol you say Tron.” speech. But at least the bros got it right.

Also, how are they mutating into a warthog and a rhinoceros without the DNA from those animals?
The way they transformed, that sequence, was pretty cool, though.

I love the comic style in the end credits.
But see: Splinter’s actor isn’t even mentioned in the special part of the end credits. He deserves better and more.
All in all, despite its flaws (too many expositions or Krang being the main villain with hardly any screentime f.e.), I really enjoyed watching this. It’s so much better than the 2014 one.
(I do hope for actual one on one friendship between Donnie and Mickey next time, though. I love the turtles most together, but separate friendships I love them the most.) (And on that note: Where was my Raph&Casey romance friendship?)

The Foxhole Court: A Summary - The Exposition Court
Exposition! Legit so many fucking character introductions! ‘!!!!!!!!’ moments! Foreshadowing! Show, Don’t Tell! Opinions! Predictions that will no doubt end up being Absolutely Fucking Ridiculous! Yay!
Sounds good? Then it’s time for Nicki to sum up the Foxhole Court.
In 2013, now-renowned author Nora Sakavic blessed us with The Foxhole Court, book one of the All For The Game trilogy. In this first installment of orange gay sporty murder shit, protagonist, runaway and professional sassmaster Neil Josten signs with the Palmetto State Foxes, a ragtag sports team of outcasts and lunatics, in order to escape his Fucked Up Past™.
On his team he finds Kevin, a childhood friend of his with an equally Fucked Up Past™, and Andrew, a messed-up murder maniac on meds. They play Exy, which is the three-way lovechild sport of lacrosse, ice hockey and bad decisions, and Kevin takes it upon himself to train Neil into the prodigy he sees in him.
But The Plot is coming for them: Kevin’s childhood abusers, Riko and Tetsuji Moriyama, and their team, the Edgar Allan Ravens, have come into their district, and they are set on taking Kevin back to their magical land of abuse and kind-of slavery, destroying the Foxes’ athletic reputation and generally fucking up everyone’s lives.
But the Foxes are not going down without a fight, and after an epic smackdown between Riko and Neil on national television, Neil is accepted into their dysfunctional family of fiercely protective psychopaths, and together they stare down into the abyss of whatever fucked-up shit is yet to come.
And that’s the Foxhole Court for you.
Did I like it? Hell fucking yes.
Do I think it’s probably going to be the weakest out of the three? Also hell fucking yes.
Let me explain.
The Foxhole Court mainly consists of one thing: Exposition. Nora Sakavic takes her sweet time introducing Neil as a character, unfolding both his backstory and his personality bit by bit, and introducing everyone else the same (although we are clearly not done with the backstories by any stretch of the imagination) as well as giving us a good feel of what Exy is and why we should care about this orange sportsball.
However, one tiny unimportant thing is kind of suffering under all that, and that is the plot.
Don’t get me wrong. I LOVE exposition. I love getting to know characters, I love them having plot-unrelated banter, give me all that good shit. There hasn’t been one bit in TFC where I was bored or wanted to skip ahead (which, if you know my attention span, is a big thing). But we can’t deny that not much has happened so far.
In fact, there have only been five parts in this entire book where I was truly off my socks, either in excitement or shock or just general WHAT THE FUCK-ness:
When we find out Kevin’s (and Neil’s) backstory, fucking wHAT, I was blown away. I had not expected the book to be this serious. A+
The entire club scene with the monsters drugging Neil and Nicky kiss-raping him. I had stuff to say about that.

THE MASTERPIECE THAT IS NEIL SASSING THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS OUT OF RIKO CAN I GET A HELL YEAH
Seth overdosing being murdered by Riko, aka the latest installment in our popular series WHAT.
And while everything else has been lovely as well, this speaks volumes for the plot which has, up until this point, been kind of on the down low, save for the moments mentioned above.
The good news is: In all likelihood, Seth’s death at the end of the book marks the point where exposition is now the fuck over. Dramatically, it would make sense to now stop fucking about and get down to business, to defeat the huns Ravens and really get to grips with the plot now in the second and third book.
(( Also, side note on the Seth situation: Let’s take a lil look back at chapter 6:
“The death threats were creative, though,” Nicky said. “Maybe this time they’ll follow through and actually kill one of us. Let’s vote. I nominate Seth.”
Like wHAT KIND OF SWEET ASS FORESHADOWING.

As for writing style, I’m pleasantly surprised. Self-published authors sadly often tend to tell too much and show too little, they describe lots and lots of things the reader could have figured out on their own and it takes a lot of immersion out of the reading experience.
Not so our dearest Nora, oh no. I’m immensely enjoying how she often just hints at feelings or thoughts of characters with just little details she drops every now and again. This works so well because those details often aren’t consciously recognized by a quick reader, yet they are vital in shaping our views of characters and scenes, providing true immersion and a full reading experience. Top notch, A+, 10/10 would author again.
(I’m too lazy to look up examples for that right now, but you all know what I mean anyways, and I’ve pointed a lot of things like this out in my recaps as well because I LOVE IT.)
Now, characters! Where do I fucking start. I’m thinking I’m just gonna throw my opinions on each of them in here and see whether they’ll change throughout the next two books.
Neil, my son. I’ve really, really grown to like him. Homeboy is still majoring in Extra and Dramatic, and I will still drag him mercilessly for it, but I like it. I like his style of narration, I care for his emotional well-being, but most of all, I like his sass. Seemingly every time he has to speak to someone for more than three sentences, he just cannot help but be the savage comeback prince he was destined to be, and I’m living for it. I hope he has lots and lots of dialogue in the next two books. I’m still not over that Riko scene. Love him.
Kevin is... I don’t actually have a clear opinion on him yet. I find him interesting as a part of Neil’s history – still not sure whether I’m buying that he doesn’t remember Neil at all –, I was stunned by his backstory and I absolutely want to fucking gut Riko for everything he’s done to Kevin, but that’s about it so far. He just….. didn’t click with me yet. Let’s see what comes around in the future.
Andrew is growing on me, I think. I’m not his biggest fan yet – he did do some fucked up shit (//eyes the club situation YET AGAIN//) and I absolutely hate him when he’s on his meds – but he’s v v interesting, both as a character and because of the med situation. And honestly, I think this is exactly what’s intended with him. Andrew was not made for immediate attachment, he was intentionally written to grow on you. And I kind of like that, it makes his character more round, more fully-formed, gives him more dimension. Also, I love him in combination with Kevin and Neil. Also just with Neil, obviously. He’s buying him clothes. Who is chill about this, not me.
Nicky……… My problematic sunshine idiot, I still have a very complicated relationship to him. I think Nicky is (as far as I've read) a wonderful example of a fuckboy who means well, meaning someone who does shitty things as a joke/bc he doesn’t think about them/bc it’s been socially engrained in him that they are okay to do (see: the kiss thing), but realises they are shitty afterwards and wants to better himself. Also, I’m just really, really grateful to have someone who brings a bit of laughter into this angsty shitshow. And gayness. Oh, how I am grateful for the gayness. Actually, who are we fucking kidding, I still love Nicky.
Aaron – who even is Aaron, seriously. I still know literally next to nothing about this dude. Apparently his mother was quite fucked up. Not close with his twin brother. Okay. Next!
RENEE, my daughter, my love, my darlingest little murder snowflake. We still don’t know much about her, but for some reason she just instantly clicked with me. She is so unbelievably kind and sweet and probably hiding like, three axe murders. GIVE ME ALL HER BACKSTORY AND GIVE IT TO ME NOW. She is probably my second-favourite character so far, together with Neil.
I’ve gathered that quite a lot of you like Matt?? I can see why, I guess. He’s a ray of sunshine as well, and an unproblematic one at that. He probably would have deserved to be captain as well. Tall Billie Joe is a good egg. <3
Pretty much all of that goes for Dan as well. Good human being, good team person. Takes no shit. Very Gryffindor. I’m wondering what her backstory is tbh, because so far, she seems like an actually stable, healthy person, which we all know cannot be true in Foxland.
I’m still sort of indifferent to Allison. She hasn’t given me reason to hate her yet, she also hasn’t given me reason to like her. I feel bad for her because of Seth’s death, though.
And Seth… Well. We kind of discussed that already.
As for the Parent Triumvirate: Idk if this ever came up, this may be news to you, but hAVE I MENTIONED I REALLY REALLY FUCKING LOVE WYMACK. Seriously. He is my favourite character, from chapter fucking one. He is the only person who can rival Neil in terms of unbound sass, which makes him great to begin with, but most importantly, he is caring, compassionate, and just the fucking kindest person in this book, yet takes no shit and doesn’t baby anyone.
“Did you think I made the team the way it is because I thought it would be a good publicity stunt? It’s about second chances, Neil. Second, third, fourth, whatever, as long as you get at least one more than what anyone else wanted to give you.”
This is the best thing anyone has said in this entire book fucking fIGHT ME. HOW DOES ONE NOT LOVE DAVID WYMACK TO THE HEAVENS AND BACK. #dicksoutforwymack
Abby and Betsy are both shaping up to be Really Cool People as well. As well as with Wymack, I love their “I’m gonna be supportive kind and good to you, but I’m not going to take any shit from you” attitude, which is precisely the way to run a team as dysfunctional as the Foxes. A+ parenting, 10/10 would love again.
Lastly, some predictions about what will happen within the next book! We’ll see what came true. I cannot wait to cringe at myself and my idioticy/blissful unawareness eight weeks from now.
They’ll deal with Seth’s death – some better, some worse
The banquet thing will happen and it will be hella awkward and hilarious and something Super Dramatic And Important will happen
Neil will master the Raven drills Kevin is making him do and it will be EPIC
Andreil will continue having Important Gay Moments™
The “Kevin and Riko know Neil” situation will not be addressed (!) (I’m expecting that to be in the last book, near the final epic smackdown)
Neither will we meet Neil’s father (again, last book)
However, we will meet Tetsuji and shit will go down
Also, we’ll meet some Ravens I suppose, since it is the Raven King after all. There was this Jean guy?? I’m intrigued
We will find out Renee’s backstory
We will find out something – if maybe not everything – about the Minyard-Hemmick backstory
Some more kisses will happen. I don’t care who kisses whom. Probably not Andreil (yet). Let it be Abby and Wymack. Aaron and his irrelevant girlfriend. I don’t care. Give me kisses.
And now all that’s left for me to say is, again, thank you thank you thank you to all of you who read this blog. All of you who give me your thoughts and comments on everything, who keep this project going and who drag my motivation back in by its hind legs every time it wants to run screaming into the other direction – you are the sole reason this thing exists. You all rock and I love you infinitely.

what are some of your favorite bluegrass/folk artists ?
OH BOY you don’t know what you’re asking for!!! so i listen to more folk than bluegrass (i just couldn’t find a good folk-y url) and i listen to a uh wide variety of styles (also i don’t always know what actually qualifies as folk) so i’ll try to divide it into sections and include maybe one or two starter songs from each band/musician? it’s going to be long. LET’S GO
bluegrass:
the bluegrass diamonds from southern new brunswick are like, every acadian kid’s introduction to bluegrass, and the french song is part of the soundtrack of my childhood as it played on my local radio station CONSTANTLY. they’re bilingual yo!
the pickin’ on series are a bunch of albums covering mostly pop in a bluegrass style which i often prefer over the originals… here’s take on me.
p’tit belliveau is a friend of mine and he just came out w his first bluegrass ep. under the name jonahmeltwave he made like… electronic chill wave music? he’s played at the halifax pop explosion and evolve music festival and he’s only 21. he’s real good at this too. here’s mon drapeau acadjonne vin d’taiwannnn – my acadian flag comes from taiwan
alison krauss and union station – yes, that alison krauss. man of constant sorrow is another one of those songs that feature heavily in the background of my memories even though i can’t pinpoint a first time i heard it. i feel like you’ve probably heard it too. i mean, it has 4 and a half million hits on youtube. and here’s alison krauss doing jolene.
conway twitty – does he count? i don’t care. i love him. hello, darling.
balsam range is good. listen to burning georgia down. they’re very reminiscient to me of jp cormier who’s up next
j.p. cormier is a bluegrass/folk/celtic nova scotian legend, born in ontario but whose family is from cape breton if i’m not mistaken. he lives there now and a lot of his music is about cape breton. i listen to it when i’m homesick for the island, so always. he’s so good. my favourites are kelly’s mountain, another morning, and highland dream (sorry i couldn’t find good versions on youtube).
canadiana/east coast folk:
the barra macneils are … i can’t even explain to you how much i love them. i have a 9 and a half hour playlist on spotify that’s just them and i listen to it regularly. i couldn’t possibly pick a favourite but banks of the roses is a popular one, the coaltown road prompted me to write 18000 words about coal miners, my heart’s in the highlands sometimes makes me cry, and the clumsy lover’s set is my favourite set of fiddle tunes EVER. and that’s really saying something.
i would be remiss if i didn’t at least mention the rankin family, because they’re again very important to cape breton/nova scotian music and were very formative to me. feel the same way too is a banger and gillis mountain feels like a hug to me. the mull river shuffle used to play at every school dance throughout junior high and high school and is a song i’ve gotten drunk to more times than i’d like to admit. #1 hype-up song.
kate & anna mcgarrigle which i’ve talked about so much on here and who are just quintessential canadian folk. bilingual. the late kate is rufus and martha wainwright’s mom! heart like a wheel is just gorgeous.
in the same vein, i also love loudain wainwright III or kate’s husband/rufus’ father. the swimming song is just the best.
buffy sainte-marie is… an icon, a legend, a genius, perfect, beautiful, wonderful… she’s so important to canadian and indigenous music and if i saw her in person i would cry. you’ve heard universal soldier.
stan rogers’ northwest passage is currently my ‘favourite song’ on tinder. i don’t get many matches.
john allan cameron, another cape breton legend. listened to the miner’s song a lot these past few months for obvious reasons.
lennie gallant, man. more good bilingual east coast music, this time from PEI. peter’s dream is one of my all-time faves.
ron hynes’ sonny’s dream is just one of those songs every nova scotian knows, like stan rogers’ barrett’s privateers.
stompin’ tom OF COURSE, who brought us such whimsical classics as the hockey song and the canadian lumberjack. he loved canada so fucking much. canada loves him so fucking much. my nova scotia home features heavily in my recent playlists.
gordon lightfoot – can i make a canadiana playlist without including him? no way. the wreck of edmund fitzgerald is my dad’s favourite song.
neo-trad/modern folk
hey rosetta! who might not qualify as folk but i haven’t been able to go a single day since the tenth grade without listening to them. i’m dead fucking serious, they’re so fucking important to me and good and especially psalm which is in my top 3 and has just… gotten me through some rough times. they’re so fucking good, you guys. i can’t even explain to you how goddamn good they are.
lisa leblanc, who i talk about all the time and listen to constantly, has been the soundtrack to my life this past year and has helped me and inspired me a lot. if you listen to anything on this list make it all 3 of her albums. but here’s one from each: juste parce que j’peux, which i listen to when i’m lonely, the waiting list, and dump the guy asap.
cy, who are a really great group of guys (+friends). they play such unique beautiful songs and they put on a really fucking good live show. i once saw them play in front of 15-20 people in a souvenir-church (not consecrated) at grand pré national historic site aka the land of our acadian ancestors and it was so special and gorgeous and intimate and emotional. here’s à la camp.
vishtèn!!!!!! vishtèn. VISHTÈN!! FUCK I LOVE VISHTÈN. here’s terre rouge (red earth). i once sang their interpretation of acadian trad mariez-moi in a battle of the bands in high school.
the once – ugh how much can i talk about the once before it gets boring???? so important to me, so formative, so good. coming back to you, their cover of the leonard cohen song, is one of my top three favourite songs ever.
great big sea, classic newfoundland. i prefer their more neo-trad stuff like river driver (which is fucking beautiful) than say, ordinary day, but they’re popular for a reason.
old man luedecke is so good!! makes me so happy!!! here’s kingdom come, my fave!!
sarah harmer’s i am aglow was a song i first heard on cbc’s the vinyl café (long live stuart mclean) and was my introduction to what folk could be, back in.. 2008? 2009? a while ago. i haven’t gotten tired of the song since. it’s very important to me. another on my top 3 faves.
amelia curran from newfoundland has a beautiful style and voice. here’s devils.
les hay babies, who’ve i’ve been following since their debut on a francophone new brunswick battle of the bands years ago because i know one of the members. i’m meh on their latest album, but their first two are so fucking good. here’s néguac and back and fil de téléphone. they have some english stuff too but tbh their french is best. kind of the acadian female version of mumford and sons?
bahamas – ok we’re finally getting out of the canadian/acadian range into the more popular folk. i love bahamas!! lost in the light is good.
