so a huge list of artists that was used to train midjourney’s model got leaked and i’m on it
literally there is no reason to support AI generators, they can’t ethically exist. my art has been used to train every single major one without consent lmfao 🤪

So Netflix is releasing this animated movie but here’s the thing - all backgrounds are done in AI. No actual BG artists were hired or credited for this work.
And here’s the kicker - I gave them too much credit. I realized that not even the AI users are credited apparently.
Check this out:
Tumblr media
“+Human”. No names, no nothing.
Tumblr media
I know it’s tempting, but please don’t hate-watch this thing. Numbers equal profit even if the people watching are just doing it to mock. Don’t give Netflix and other studios even more incentive to fire more animators and replace them with machines trained on their work and skill. Hilariously, the excuse used is ‘there aren’t enough artists’. That’s not true - there are more than enough artists, but the real issue is that no one wants to pay a living wage. Here’s a short video about the reality of animation in Japan.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The biggest winners in this equation at the end of the day are the AI infrastructure owners - owners of Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, etc. Do not feed this machine, it creates more monopolization of entire industries, raises a powerful few and dehumanizes the rest.
EDIT: a lot of people are unsure what the anime’s called - it’s The Dog and the Boy.

Hey, do y’all remember how Tencent said they were developing faceID AI to identify people in riots, and then they suddenly created an AI art generator to turn your selfies into anime?
Do y’all remember that time that someone discovered facial recognition cameras couldn't see through Juggalo makeup, then Facebook had a fun “see what you'd look like with Juggalo makeup” thing, and then facial recognition cameras could suddenly see through Juggalo makeup?
Do y’all remember how, on Twitter, Elon started a tirade against artists who ask for credit when their art is reposted, and he suddenly he created one of the first big art AI programs?
Do y’all remember how AI destroyed the field of freelance translation, despite the inferiority of the machine translations, because companies didn’t care about the quality of the translations? They just wanted it done for free?
Do y’all know how companies will see a lot of money going into a New Tech Thing (like, say, AI art apps) and will jump to try and implement that New Tech Thing into their tech? For example, how it felt like every big company and celebrity had an NFT to sell?
Just wondering.

PSA! TUMBLR IS SELLING YOUR ART TO AI COMPANIES
I've just been warned by a coworker who spoke to people inside Tumblr's parent company Automattic that they plan to sell all original images uploaded to this hellsite to Midjourney AI. Here is that warning in his words:
Tumblr media
In other words, your OC will be used to train AI without your consent, and your art style will be stolen by the AI.
DELETE YOUR ARTWORK NOW!!!
Spread this post so more artists will be aware of this blatant theft!

Someone at tumblr/automattic asked whether requests to opt out of "AI" data sharing would be honored retroactively (which seems important, seeing as tumblr has apparently compiled the user data they're going to send *before* giving any kind of opt-out option) and Automattic's head of "AI" Andrew Spittle responded:
We will notify existing partners on a regular basis about anyone who's opted out since the last time we provided a list. I want this to be an ongoing process where we regularly advocate for past content to be excluded based on current preferences. We will ask that content be deleted and removed from any future training runs. I believe partners will honor this based on our conversations with them to this point. I don't think they gain much overall by retaining it.
And I do not trust midjourney or openai in the slightest--their business models, by their own admission, depend on scraping art they don't have permission to use--so I do not believe that they will honor any requests to remove data already received when requests are made to remove it. So yeah. take that as you will.
Edit
about 20 minutes after I posted this, @staff put out this:
They do not acknowledge that they are definitely actually in the process of selling your data to third parties, but they have a setting which (they claim) will prevent them from sharing information with third parties, including "AI" training businesses.
I've turned it on, but tumblr has burned so much trust that I really don't have faith that tumblr will actually change the package of information that will be provided to these third parties based on the setting: tumblr/automattic must know that "AI" art theft is tremendously unpopular with a huge portion of tumblr, and that having this setting (even with a "you must know about it to use it" opt out setting) will result in a bunch of users setting their unintuitive "don't share with third parties" setting to "on" which will diminish the value of the sale.
I don't think tumblr will honor this setting.

AI generated art is bad for everyone
So many people are asking, will ai replace art - that’s the wrong question. It already has. Not like in the sense that all art from now on will now be ai- but look at how many people rushed to download an $8 app.
And now what’s worse is now the tech industry has that data, that in one day lensa ai made over $1 million. So now we know ai art isn’t going anywhere. They have the proof that it’s worth it financially to use ai
What corporation is going to pay 10k for an illustrated ad campaign when they can spend $8 and $20 for someone of Fiverr to edit out that extra third hand.
Ai is bad for union makeup artists in film. Disney has already announced they plan on using AI instead of “expensive” old age makeup.
It’s bad for everyone & what they will come to expect in both immediacy & cost of creating art.
It’s bad for any artist who has their artwork on social media in any way. Who now have to worry about their art being sampled without their consent or compensation.
This has absolutely changed the art industry.

Call Out Post
((OOC: Sorry tender lumplings for the impromptu callout. I genuinely don't like doing this at all but it's this person's fault for talking to me. Well @everythingjackskellington, here's your feature. Also delete your blog.
PLEASE don't buy from @everythingjackskellington. They are THEFT, an AI junkie and a SCAMMER.
Tumblr media
They just recently dropped a promo ask in my box and I immediately recognized their art as being both AI and stolen in their collection on ViralStyle.
Tumblr media
The moment I saw the "Ragdoll Coffee" insignia I recognized it as being that of Ellador's art from Redbubble. Buy her actual design here.
Given that I am A) a redbubble artist myself, and we have to sift through LOTS of art theft, including our own art being stolen, and B) have a sister who's been ripped off herself, I will not tolerate this. You are exploiting other artists and TNBC fans who don't know any better.
Please, everyone reading, do NOT buy TNBC fan merch that does not clearly have the artist's name attached. We get our work stolen enough for AI. Also I don't care if the above artwork you linked me with isn't AI. You stole it. You didn't make it.
Thief.
Do not buy this. If you have some time to kill while you're on vacay and/or wrapping xmas presents, see Hbomberguy's latest video on creator theft and plagiarism. It is worth you time and is a great example as to why I have no tolerance for this kind of thing.
The only silver lining, to spare you all from looking yourself and giving them anymore traction, was laughing at some of the clearly unthought out automated stuff they slapped Jack and Sally on. It'd be funny if you actually had any thought behind it, but again I know you didn't:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To the antiJallys/Sally-going-her-own-way-crowd, these would be funny if they weren't baseless generative crap. In fact, make your OWN gay sally designs outta this. I believe in you~
Tumblr media
Well, you got the Blink182 lyrics right but wow you missed out on the one opportunity to spam Jack's face on something and needlessly swear. Good one, but I don't know why the Monster High logo is there.
Also yes this person swears like a sailor and does just what I said. If you want Jack on a bunch of stuff that has nothing do with him...you should still flag this store and not buy from them. But here they are, regardless.

Oh, and nice Autism Speaks propaganda there.

Okay, usually I don’t participate in this stuff but I feel compelled to since
Freaking AI ART IS TRENDING?!
So, AI Art is a good tool to use for inspiration, it’s meant to get your mind flowing with ideas and some fun styles you wouldn’t have thought of on your own.
I’m not going to get into the discussion of “real” or “fake” art in terms of AI art because that conversation is way more complex than Tumblr realizes.
It is unfortunately sourcing all the images used to create the art without permission from the original artists, it’s not an ethical way to make original art. If the art that is used to create these AI generated images were sourced with proper permission from the original creators with credit given, then the conversation would be much different, but that’s not the case.
AI Art is a form of art theft. Please do not support AI Art on it’s own, you can use it as inspiration or a way to get some fresh ideas, but just using AI Art generators to create your own work isn’t going to be your own work.
It’s going to be stolen from another hard working artist.

Apologies for my recent radio silence. I've had a lot on my mind lately.
This post isn't Earthspark-related at all, but please read it.
I need to take a second on this blog to acknowledge some things going on in the world. I should not have stayed silent on this blog before, but I'm trying to fix that now.
Genocide in Palestine + how you can help Palestinians
You can buy e-sims for people in Gaza here. Anything helps.
Click here daily to help generate funds for Palestine. It's free and takes less than a minute.
Here's a list of where you can donate to help Palestine.
(If there's anything I should add to this section, please let me know.)

The KOSA bill, what it's going to do if passed, and how you can help prevent it from taking effect
KOSA will essentially erase anonymity from the internet by requiring people to upload their government ID or other form of identification to any social media site, as well as restricting resources and information on LGBT rights, history, racism, and more. This bill will censor the entire internet and destroy privacy while violating First Amendment rights and potentially putting minors in danger.
This also could very well mean the end of Tumblr, and I'm not exaggerating here.
Tomorrow KOSA could be passed in Senate, and from there it will need to pass in the House of Representatives before being signed into law by the president. It's not doomsday yet, but it is a dangerous situation-- and here's what you can do.
StopKOSA.org provides you with a template email to send to your representatives. You can leave it how it is or edit it to say what you want, and then send it from their website.
The website also allows you to call your representatives and gives you a template of what to say.
BadInternetBills.org, run by the same people, takes action against KOSA as well as other bills like EARN IT. At the time of posting this, over 356,000 people have signed this petition.
Additionally there are several petitions on change.org to help stop KOSA. Here are a few of them.
STOP KOSA
STOP THE KOSA
Stop Kosa
Save Humanity, Oppose KOSA
STOP THE KOSA ACT
(Again, please let me know if there's anything I should add.)
-----
One last thing-- The evolution of AI images and video.
I don't really have anything good to say. AI is evolving fast and changing the world as we know it. We are adapting, but nobody knows how this really is going to end up.
A few quick points:
AI images are not art. That's all. AI "artists" who genuinely claim to have made something of their own just by typing a prompt into a generator will be blocked. (Which has been in my rules for a while, but I still think it needs to be said.)
I recommend Glaze for artists who don't want their art being scraped and used for data training. Especially with the recent rumors of an upcoming deal between Tumblr and Midjourney. There's also a similar program called Nightshade (haha, earthspark reference? anyone?🦉) that I haven't tested myself but have heard good things about.
-----
That's all, I suppose. Reblogs are good, if you don't mind.
Spread the word about KOSA. Contact your representatives. Sign the petitions.
Support Palestine if possible. Donate if you can. If you are unable to donate, make sure to do your daily clicks.
Stay safe and take care of yourselves. ❤️

Best news I’ve heard in a long time!!! Read more about the lawsuit here.
Huge respect and gratitude to the team behind this, no matter what happens. But I do believe justice will prevail and we artists will win this fight!

I'm still seeing a lot of people support AI generated images so let me explain it in a way most can get it
Imagine you work at a pizza shop. You're really good at making pizzas and are very proud of your work, one day your boss calls you and everyone one else in and fires you all. No reason, the place is not shutting down. Your boss is replacing you all with something, it's invisible, has no look, isn't tangible and it has been studying you all and copying you all in order to do your jobs. It's making pizza using your technique. Not a problem right? Well, all the other pizza shops are now using this invisible thing. You can still get another job, right? Wrong. Every company is now using this invisible thing and won't hire you. So, when you talk about and stand up against it some people are with you but some still say: "Get a real job" You can't. "It's not that bad" It'll literally replace you and everyone else until no one can make money.
Anyways, fuck Ai!

Cancelled both my supporter badge and ad-free browsing subscriptions in protest and I encourage everyone to do the same.
If you make deals with AI companies you clearly don't need our money.
Edit: I take that back.
It could have been better explained when the switch was introduced and I am salty about that but from what I understand, AI scrapers were already feeding on Tumblr but now they were locked out by a paywall. Which honestly, smart and I can get behind that.
Not happy about the current "AI" (because it's not really AI) ridden internet but what can you do but... poison the datasets with Nightshade.

Just had a look at all the artists names who were used for Midjoureny AI. It's over 4000 names, 4000 people who have had their art stolen as "data".
