I am starting a rewatch of the 2008 movie adaptation of Brideshead Revisited, a 1945 novel by Evelyn Waugh. This is my most loved Matthew Goode film, based on one of my favourite novels, so it is very close to my heart.
I’ll be using the Director’s Cut bluray.
The collage above shows Charles Ryder's journey from young innocence to loss, love found and disillusion.

The cast of Brideshead Revisited (2008) is magnificent and includes, in addition to Matthew Goode (Charles Ryder), Hayley Awell (Julia Flyte), Ben Wishaw (Sebastian Flyte), Emma Thompson (Lady Marchmain) and Michael Gambon (Lord Marchmain). Emma Thompson took the young actors, who really got on well together, under her wings.

Brideshead Revisited: The Sacred & Profane Memories of Captain Charles Ryder is a 1945 novel by Evelyn Waugh. It follows, from the 1920s to the early 1940s, the life and romances of Charles Ryder, his encounter with the aristocratic Flytes and their beautiful stately home Brideshead and his journey of discovery. It explores themes around nostalgia for the past and English nobility, happiness, love and loss and Catholic faith and guilt.
The novel (and film) start and end with older bittersweet Charles as an officer during the war billetted at Brideshead and reminiscing about the past.

Brideshead Revisited was turned into a stupendous 11-part mini-series in 1981 by Granada TV with Jeremey Irons and Anthony Andrews. It is an excellent adaptation which received critical acclaim. A high bar for the cast and crew of the 2008 movie who must have felt the weight of history on their shoulders.

Brideshead Revisited was directed by Julian Jarrold and cinematography is by Jess Hall (both pictured with Matthew Goode). The screenplay is by Jeremy Brock and Andrew Davies. I think the film is a cinematographic gem and feast for the eyes. It’s a shame it got a lukewarm reception. I think the comparisons with an 11-part miniseries, which had the time to unfold the story, are unfair. The film had to condense quite a lot of the book and made some adaptive choices which may be seen as a departure from the novel but it remains, in my view, true to the spirit of the book and is a very good adaptation in its own right.

The main locations for Brideshead Revisited are Oxford, Venice and Castle Howard, a stately home in Yorkshire. The miniseries used Castle Howard for Brideshead so the director Julian Jarrold hesitated about reusing it, wanting to forge his own path. But he decided to go for it in the end as it fits the descriptions in the book and the baroque architecture “instinctively evokes Catholicism”.
It is a stunning place and one understands why Charles Ryder fell under its spell.

The original score for Brideshead Revisited was written by Adrian Johnston and is one of my many favourite things about the film. It is beautiful and mirrors wonderfully all the emotions of hope, loss, heartbreak and nostalgia from the story.

Hamlet is the Shakespearean character that many actors long to play. Jade Anouka is one of those actors. She talks to past Hamlets– Sir Derek Jacobi, Adrian Lester, Samuel West and Tessa Parr – about the challenges in approaching the part.
And she hears the fabled story of The Red Book, a red-bound copy of the play, begun by the actor Sir Johnston Forbes-Robinson, who passed the book on to a successive actor on the condition that in turn they passed it onto the finest Hamlet of the next generation. Derek Jacobi tells the story of receiving it from Peter O’Toole and passing it on to Kenneth Branagh, who in turn passed it on to Tom Hiddleston. Jade wonders where the book might go next.
Jade also explores why Hamlet as a part holds such fascination for actors. Here’s the rub - no one can tell you what Hamlet is about. A revenge tragedy, an Oedipal drama, a political betrayal, a study of insanity, the portrait of a fatally flawed genius. Each actor makes it his own but has to deal with the weight of its history.
Derek Jacobi tells the story of performing ‘To be or not to be’ only to hear the voice of Sir Winston Churchill joining in from the front row. Adrian Lester describes how he whispered each famous speech to himself in an attempt to get back to the essence of the language.
And each generation interprets Hamlet as an expression of their own time. Professor Michael Dobson from the Shakespeare Institute describes a production he saw in Ukraine in a cellar now used as a bomb shelter.

"We filmed the ‘Mother of Earth’ film clip in London whilst Dave Gahan was in town for Depeche Mode's ‘Momento Mori’ World Tour.

Honorable J. Parnell Thomas, Chairman of the Committee on Un-American Activities issued the following statement for release Sunday morning ["Sunday morning" underlined] newspapers, September 21, 1947:

The order of appearance of the witnesses will be announced at a later date.
In making public the names of the witnesses, however, I want to emphasize that the mere fact they are being called to testify before the Committee should not be considered a reflection in any way upon their character or patriotism. These persons are being brought with the sole objective of obtaining the facts regarding the inroads the communists have made in Hollywood. Some of the witnesses are friendly to the Committee's purposes. Others are undoubtedly hostile. The Committee wants to hear both sides.

The Committee had originally hoped to begin this hearing on September 29. However, a number of unforeseen circumstances have arisen regarding the membership of the Committee which necessitates a delay until October 20, in order that all members may be present for this important hearing. Mr. Mundt and Mr. Nixon are now in Europe as members of Congressional committees studying conditions there. Mr. Veil is convalescing from a recent operation, and Mr. Peterson has informed me that he cannot possibly attend the hearings this month. I feel quite certain, however, that all the members will be available by October 20.
Hearings will begin as scheduled September 24 on the Hanns Eisler phase of this hearing. This cannot be delayed until the October date for the reason that all of the witnesses have been subpoenaed and are in Washington at this time, some having been brought from foreign countries. The announced witnesses in the Hanns Eisler care are as follows:

Rovanperä revels on wet Estonian stages
Once again (as is becoming common this season) young Finnish driver Kalle Rovanperä gave his fellow WRC contenders a master class in driving on this weekend’s Rally Estonia. Despite starting first on the road and coping with unfavourable driving conditions initially Rovanperä was able to forge ahead when the stages became wet and treacherous. When grip was at a minimum Rovanperä’s talent appeared at a maximum as he took huge chinks of time out of his closest rivals.
Elfyn Evans has been holding the young Finn back until the first muddy stages were encountered and then the Welshman had to give best to Rovanperä who is fast becoming another remarkable flying Finn. Behind Evan Ott Tänak brought his Hyundai home in third, never able to challenge the leading Toyotas but comfortably in front of his Belgian teammate Thierry Neuville. Neither Hyundai had a trouble-free run, minor niggles hampering outright speed (an issue that has affected Hyundai for more than just this season).
Takamoto Katsuta took fifth overall; the young Japanese driver beating fellow Toyota driver Esapekka Lappi whilst Adrian Fourmaux was top placed Ford driver in seventh overall (a good result for Fourmaux but another disappointing rally for Ford).
WRC2 winner Andreas Mikkelsen claimed eight overall in his Skoda Fabia Evo; bagging an impressive haul of powerstage points on the way. Next up (and second in the WRC2 class) was Teemu Suninen who finished the final stage on two cylinders in his Hyundai i20 N whilst the top ten was rounded out by the third WRC2 car home, Emil Lindolm. Lindholm never recovered from time lost with an early puncture so was reasonably pleased to make it two TOK Sport Skodas in the top 10.
Rovanperä now holds an 82 point lead over Neuville with just six remaining rounds of the 2022 championship.
