#side note i have seen ppl cook the 2009 version too for the staging and having a kiss at all. WHICH I UNDERSTAND.#considering where in theater history it originated and what context it was originally used in. but like#w the context of both the actors' thoughts on the scene and how they talk about hamlet's disgust and betrayal#2009 version reads as fundamentally nonromantic/nonsexual to me. Like if it ended on a kiss on the cheek it would be the exact same#also how hamlet talks abt 'here hung lips that i have kiss'd' re: yorick it's like this form of affection between him and a parental figure#and in making the staging and the dynamic so uncomfortable BUT also rly emphasizing the parent/child relationship in the end#u get this smth that just. Hits you (me) so hard. w just how fundamentally broken these two ppl are#how they wish for a version of the other that no longer exists etc etc etc#hamlet#david tennant#side side note im remembering that one commenter that compared the scene of kilgrave and his mom to act 3 scene 4#to which i had a knee jerk reaction of getting so mad at because why would you compare hamlet to that thing#but also the sense of emotion that runs through both scenes is genuinely similar. the sense of betrayal and abandonment and childlike fury

monarchy has no real purpose and should be abolished irl but im a slut for royal families in fiction. the politics. the intrigue. families divided by the eyes of a nation. the pressure of children told from birth that they are born to rule, born for only one purpose. the stifling of empathy and real bonds and love. the loneliness when all eyes are on you. it’s so inherently tragic and yet everyone involved is terrible because that’s all they can be. gimme.
