I do like to think that if Penny ever met my Dash character, they'd be good friends, though Dash is now mostly from a stand-alone universe that mostly came about because of troubles getting people to roleplay with the canon divergent AU I had (which in all fairness, it isn't easy to take the canon characters as they are now and apply it to that), the fact I still imagine Penny would still end up considering him a little brother is adorable.

Since they're both androids (the time they met on the RWBY side would be just after everyone gets their licenses on the RWBY) who were made and built to be heroic defenders of where they live, but they wish to be more than that, so I think hearing each other out and how things are for each other would make them good friends that look out for each other at least.

Though I imagine it'd be Penny that'd "adopt" Dash as the little brother because in shared universe time, she was first, much like their basises, Penny with Pinocchio, and Dash with Shotaro Ishinomori's Android Kikaider.

I think I'm getting used to the song, can't say I love it, but I just accepted it ahydushjagdhshs. Burning Question

❀ Sungchan asks JiHo a rather personal question and some of the boys end up getting their “feelings hurt” (ft. Shotaro)

There were always moments during the year which were more busy than others, but with SM deciding to do another full NCT unit, like they did 2 years ago with NCT 2018, 2020 was just busy all year round. The practise rooms were always used to there fullest potential. 24 members jumping around and singing loudly in preparation for that year’s promotions.

Amongst the intense training there was some much needed time pushed aside for breaks, and the members made sure to enjoy every second of their breaks. Shotaro and JiHo, during this particular break, had been talking about everything and nothing. The girl asking Shotaro about how he liked being apart of the time so far.

Sungchan was seated next to the duo, preoccupied scrolling down social media on his phone. He had been excited to see what the fans were expecting from NCT this year, feeling a bit proud since he knew more than the fans did. But after a while reading comments got a bit boring and he turned towards Shotaro and JiHo, who were still very immersed into their conversation. He didn’t want to interrupt them, but he felt a bit left out, his Japanese lacking way too much to understand the two. JiHo who had noticed Sungchan’s gaze on them by looking at the mirror and changed her position so they were sat in a triangle, all able to look each other. Sungchan slightly blushed in embarrassment, causing JiHo to hold back a smile.

“What have you been up to?” The girl asked the younger boy, nodding towards the phone in his lap. “O-Oh, I was just reading comments from the fans.” Sungchan didn’t expect a question really, causing him to stutter a bit before finding the right words. They continued making a bit of small talk, of course including Shotaro in the conversation, before they had gotten to a comfortable silence.

As the three of them sat with their backs against the wall, Sungchan suddenly sat up straight. There was something he had been curious about for quite some time now and it didn’t help that JiHo wasn’t one to talk about herself a lot, so he never found out naturally. It came to a point where he was a bit afraid to ask her even, since there might have been a reason he still didn’t know the answer to his burning question, but no one else seemed as interested in it as he was. Maybe he was just nosy? Maybe everyone knew, everyone but him? He wasn’t fully sure at this point.

“What’s up?” JiHo chuckled a bit at the younger boy’s weird behaviour. After suddenly sitting up he had just stared out in front of him for a minute or two, seemingly lost in thought. Sungchan shook his head as if he was getting his thoughts straight before looking at JiHo. “Noona... I have a question.” He sounded a bit nervous which promoted the girl to sit straight as well. “You can ask me anything. Go ahead.” “But I don’t know if this is appropriate to ask you...” His words trailed of. “Don’t worry if you’re asking me who my favourite NCT member is, I’d probably say Taeil oppa.” She said seriously, only to receive a laugh from both Sungchan and Shotaro.

The other boys weren’t sitting too far from them and had heard her statement which earned her a few words of protest. “Hey! I thought I was your favourite!” Haechan yelled and JiHo rolled her eyes at that. “Dream on Haechan.” She waved him off and said boy scoffed. Her eyes than met Jaemin’s who was pouting at her. “You know, I would’ve been okay if you said Jisung, but Taeil hyung?!” He feigned hurt causing everyone to laugh and JiHo to quickly apologise.

Finally calmed down and with the mood definitely lightened at this point, JiHo turned back to Sungchan. “No seriously, you can ask me anything.” Sungchan nodded before speaking up. “So your mother is Korean, but you are half Japanese half French... And isn’t your father French? So how...” Sungchan didn’t dare to finish his question as he noticed some of the boys, who were closer to them, become more quiet and look at them. “I mean you don’t have to answer-” JiHo cut him off by putting up her hand motioning to calm down. He had started rambling. “That’s right, I guess you were never there when I talked about it. Don’t worry, Sungchan, it’s not a big secret or anything. I just never bring this up really.” She sounded so calm and understanding, but it didn’t help Sungchan feel much better with his hyungs staring at them intently.

“My real mother is Japanese and my real father is French, but they couldn’t take care of me. So when I was a year old my real parents wanted to put me up for adoption. However, my real father’s older brother had a wife and a stable job and they weren’t opposed to having children. So they adopted me.” JiHo explained. “It’s a bit complicated isn’t it?” Telling that story was clearly not something JiHo liked doing, but she still smiled at Sungchan. It slightly hurt his heart hearing about her family, definitely because he did know about how her mother got sick when she was 6, which resulted in JiHo living with her grandparents for around 6 years.

“So your dad is your real dad’s older brother?” JiHo nodded. “I look a lot like my real father, and they look like each other as well so that’s why I look like my adoptive father.” He didn’t realise it, but Sungchan was nodding along with JiHo’s words, his mouth slightly agape as he listened to each word attentively. “But if you were still a baby when you were adopted, how can you speak Japanese so well?” The boy was now very interested in everything JiHo could tell him about her past. Some of the older boy’s noticed and thought it was very cute. “At some point I just felt like I had to know Japanese and learn about the culture since it’s part of my blood you know? It almost felt wrong knowing more about Korea than Japan. That’s when I decided to learn Japanese.”

The conversation had continued on with Sungchan interrogating JiHo about her life. It was so interesting to hear about how it was like growing up in France. How she used to go to school with her friends with their inline skates or skateboards. How she had huge gatherings with all her friends and their families. How she had so many hobbies. It kind of made him sad in her place that she gave that up to become a singer in Korea, leaving all her friends and family behind on the other side of the planet. But he also felt happy that he ended up being in the same team as her, just being in her presence alone was so soothing yet fun. His respect for her had skyrocketed just because of that one conversation.

“Do you miss it?” JiHo looked up at the boy with wide eyes before thinking about it for a second. “Don’t we all miss some parts of our childhood?” That was a good question, Sungchan missed hanging out with his friends in elementary school, not having so many responsibilities yet. “Of course I miss it, but I love what I’m doing now, so I’m all good.” She said, her smile just barely reaching her eyes. It always hurts thinking about the past, and Sungchan could only imagine how much more it hurt for JiHo who basically had left her whole life behind and it wasn’t just an arms length away from her to reach back for it.

“And now you two are part of the team which makes it even better.” Both Sungchan and Shotaro blushed a little at the girl’s comment. Johnny noticed and couldn’t help but tease the younger boys. “Hey JiHo, calm down with the compliments, we don’t want the boys to form a crush on you.” JiHo burst out laughing the two boys next to her becoming even more flustered. “Don’t listen to him, he’s just being stupid.” She pointed an cautionary finger at Johnny who just walked away while laughing.

“Anything else you want to know?” JiHo asked Sungchan in an attempt to change the subject. In the corner of her right eye however, she sees a big shadow quickly approach her. After turning in its direction she found Yuta who had dragged Taeil along with him, sitting in front of her.

“I heard Taeil hyung is your favourite NCT member?” He raised a brow before shaking the oldest a bit. “Are you sure of that?” Taeil sighed not amused. “You’re right I’m sorry, I guess it isn’t Taeil.” JiHo replied which made Yuta smile brightly and he let go of Taeil’s arm. “Hey! Why not? I-” Before Taeil could protest any further Yuta intervened. “Who is it then?” He asked hopefully. JiHo smirked before reaching both her hands to either side of her and grabbing Sungchan and Shotaro by their arms. “Our two newest members.”

A new kind of chaos broke out in the practise room. Everyone of the members who felt worthy of the role as JiHo’s favourite member started yelling out their own reasons why. “I’d say run before Yuta catches you guys.” The girl warned the 2 boys before she ran away herself to hide behind Taeyong.

They were the first unit the girls met, they were all kind at first although they were still wary of the idea of having a new sub-unit with girls in the group. Taeyong was very helpful and friendly at first, he was also shy, but now they are much closer, he and Yubin sometimes go out to talk about the members, so Taeyong knows more about them and what they are doing. Johnny was the most outgoing, he became friends with them more quickly, especially Luna, acting like a big brother to her, and paying attention to her theories since no one seems to understand her. They didn't have many opportunities to talk with Taeil, and Jaehyun, but they know they are very sweet. Yuta was one of the most fearful about them, he had a bad impression of them when they ended up "invading" their dorm and being quite invasive, but nowadays they get along well, he usually tease them, especially Jiwon, he sees her like a little sister who needs to be protected. Haechan considers them all very sweet and always tries to include them in everything they do, he is Jiwon's best friend and whenever he sees her he screams her name or calls her "cute Jiwon", to Winwin's delight, he found another target. Doyoung was a bit introverted at first, he was slow to deal with them informally, but he was always very kind and polite. Jungwoo they're not very close either, but Jungwoo always wanted to get to know them better. Mark has always been friendly to all of them and treats them with affection.

NCT Dream.

Warnings: Some members may not be here, but that's because I may have already written about them in another unit.

Renjun was always very quiet, although he always treated them politely, he seems to have found Luna a very curious figure, in fact she is, none of the members think like her and that is what makes Luna, Luna. He seems to want to get closer to her, to get to know her, but he still needs some courage. Jeno he seems to be loved by all the w-love members, they all find him very cute and kind, even though they are not so close to him. Jaemin is friend with all the members, but especially Stacey, they're pretty close and today they're making a list of the sexiest members, obviously arguing over which one of them should come out on top. Chenle is Yanfei's best friend and she really likes him a lot, she finds him too precious to the world and protects him like a big sister, he helps her in her videos. Jisung is loved by all the members too, he likes to see them and hear Jiwon calling him "Oppa"

Kun has always been very helpful with all the members, especially the Chinese members, they like him a lot and invite him to dinner sometimes. Ten also helped them in the beginning and became a good friend of Yanfei, they sometimes meet so her cat "Kiss" can play with "Louis" and "Leon". Winwin is very dear to them and they find him very adorable, especially Luna who seems to want to impress him by the fact that she has him as her bias and admires him. Lucas is not very close to them, but they still like him and talk sometimes. Xiaojun is friend with Jina and Yanfei, they share mutual interests and he is good at making them laugh. Hendery he's friends with all of them and they think he's very cute, but mostly Yanfei who seems to see him differently from the members, but it's still too early for her to confirm something. (👁👁). Yangyang is very polite to them and tends to tease Luna by calling her "Little Luna", even if Winwin tries to defend her.

Shotaro and Sungchan.

Shotaro and Sungchan are Yubin's adopted children, they are the most loved by them, they shower them with cumpliments every time they meet them, and make a point of doing it in front of Jiwon so that she gets embarrassed and blushes. They are friends with Jiwon and they hang out together sometimes, and she likes to call them "Oppa" to see them blush.

aria and shotaro were sitting in the back of the dressing room, conversing quietly as haechan walked around doing a small interview with the other members. it was clear that they didn’t know they were on camera, as aria playfully went to tug at his shirt collar and mess it up - an attempt that was thwarted when shotaro defended himself by poking aria in her exposed stomach.

aria poked him back, shotaro jumping back slightly from the long nails she wore. he retaliated again.

sungchan shook his head lightly, before looking down and taking the proffered hand just out of sight of the camera.

aria’s smile shifted into something reassuring.

“that’s us, sungchannie. that’s us.”

Mark and I will come get you after your last class. We have to introduce you both to the pack. If you both are interested in perhaps joining later?" Taeyong said unsure.

"You would really be willing to let a human like me in your pack? Are you sure your other pack mates wouldn't be angry?" She asked, skeptical.

"They will love you. Some may be rude at first but trust us they will love you." The blonde Alpha finally spoke from his spot by Jaehyun.

She looks at Shotaro seeing the hopeful look in his eyes. She agreed.

* * * End of the School Day * * *

Taeyong and Mark came as promised with Sungchan and Haechan behind them. Haechan ran to Shotaro hugging and scenting him. Shotaro was a shocked blushing mess. Via chuckled as Sungchan pulled Haechan off Shotaro only for the Omega to cling to the clouded leopard's arm.

Mark and Taeyong each took one of her hands not being pushed away they smiled looping their arms in hers. It only took about 20 minutes to get to the Pack house or mansion more like it.

"Why do I smell- V? Taro? Is that you?" A puppy like Chinese Alpha asked in surprise.

"Yukhei!" The siblings ran to the Alpha hugging him.

"You guys know Lucas?" The four who brought the siblings home asked trying to hide their jealousy.

"I told you I had a human friend and a leopard friend. These are two I'm always talking about. It's so good to see my little sister and brother." Lucas grinned.

I still can't believe you didn't let Mom and Dad sign the adoption papers. You know the offer is always open right?" Shotaro asked as the Alpha scented the two like he used too. Several growls were heard.

Sungchan grabbed Shotaro from Lucas as Via was taken by Yuta.

"What are you guys doing?" The rest of the pack entered the sitting room.

"Oh, hey Taro. Hey Via." A few of the Omegas and Betas greeted them.

"Hey guys. Will you please tell Yuta and Sungchan to let go of us? Yukhei is an old friend and like our brother. He was just scenting us like he used to." Via explained.

"Are either of them courting you?" YangYang asked.

"The Dreamies are interested in Taro and Jaehyun and the others asked me on a date."

"THEY WHAT?!?!" The others shouted not believing their head Alphas and Lunas would have asked her out. They usually only had flings or very brief girlfriends and none were ever humans. Though the ones who have spoken with her know she isn't like all the other humans that they hate so much. Her and Shotaro would make good editions to the pack.

Yuta started scenting her and nipped her neck softly causing her to jerk looking behind her in surprise. "Ours."

She looked at Taeyong and his other mates who were just as surprised as she was at Yuta's possessive of her.

"Why are you wasting your time on some human slut?" An Alpha sneered in disgust. Her scent soured a little when they heard a terrifying growl.

Don't you EVER and I mean EVER talk to my big sister like that or I'll make sure you won't have pups ever." Shotaro snarled angrily. Yuta grip loosened so Via made her way to Shotaro pulling him into a hug as he scented her hugging her tightly.

"It's okay, baby. He's just had a bad experience with humans. That's why he's being nasty. It's not his fault humans are so awful to hybrids. Everything's okay. You know I've been called worst. Thank you for looking out for me though. Love you my baby." She gave him an Eskimo kiss to calm him down. The rude Alpha (Kun) was watching jaw dropped. The clouded leopard called the girl his sister and stood up for her while she calmed him down and treated him as a brother while making an excuse for his own bad behavior.

Setting of Akira: It has been thirty years since the end of WWIII, begun due to the detonation of an unidentified superweapon known only as “Akira” over Tokyo. The incident and subsequent war decimated the city which was rebuilt into Neo-Tokyo, a corrupt and crime-ridden megalopolis centered on an artificial island in Tokyo Bay.

The capsule cradled in Shotaro’s palm is red and white and shiny, like the earrings that Noriko would wear and which, when Shotaro asked, he found out were supposed to look like “blood and come,” respectively. The drone of Tanaka-Sensei’s voice from the front of the classroom barely penetrates the cloak of sullen disruption shielding Shotaro’s wooden amphitheater seat in classroom 12 of the Eighth District Vocational Training School. Even though realistically no one is paying attention, Shotaro tries to hold the pill so that his hand is obscured by his row’s shared desk. He doesn’t know why he’s so nervous; Tanaka-Sensei is barely commanding control of the room as he attempts to explain how a carburetor works, the closest kid to Shotaro is reading a girly magazine, and everyone at the school is well aware that you can buy as many of these pills as any broke student could afford from the nurse’s office.

It’s just, Shotaro reasons as the patent-leather-like curves of the capsule glint in the jaundiced combination of natural and fluorescent light, he’s always been a good kid. He doesn’t do things like this – at least that’s what Yuta constantly tells him. He doesn’t buy drugs – no matter how cheap they are – from Kaneda’s girlfriend of all people, and he certainly doesn’t take them. Kaneda, Shotaro has always felt, is inextricably linked to him. For one, Shotaro Kaneda’s family name is the same as Shotaro’s given name (though they use slightly different kanji if anyone ever cared to notice). For another thing, the two boys have known of each other since early childhood, having come up in the same orphanage and school system for boys deemed by the state to be “lacking in future prospects.” (Shotaro doesn’t think this label really applies to him; it’s not his fault he doesn’t really like academics and the one activity he really enjoys – dancing – is far too expensive for him to pursue). For a final, crucial thing, Kaneda is the leader of the Capsules, the rival gang to Yuta’s Clowns. The fact that Kaneda could very literally kill Shotaro’s adoptive brother of sorts any day now understandably precludes him from feeling much of an affinity towards his classmate.

Shotaro has been taunted more times than he can remember for being the “boring” Shotaro. But if skating by under the radar to receive his vocational high school diploma, getting out, and not being sent to Jaws for discipline twice a week is boring to his classmates, Shotaro doesn’t really care.

Well, he didn’t care, until he had gotten to thinking one day last week. It started when he’d found Yuta’s stash of drugs. Yuta tries very hard to keep any evidence of his dependency from his little brother, but he’s not always great at it. Over the years, Shotaro couldn’t help but notice the blissful calm which comes over Yuta when Shotaro has caught him thinking he was taking the stuff in private. Nor could Shotaro help but register the ensuing boost in energy and motivation. It had always made him wonder even if Yuta categorically forbid it and he was good at smothering his curiosity. When Shotaro came to school the next day and mentioned finding Yuta’s pills offhand to Sungchan, the younger boy proved less adept at quashing his hunger for new experiences, and Shotaro had begun to truly let his imagination get the best of him.

“Hey!” The harsh whisper startles Shotaro out of his preoccupation with the look and feel of his capsule, to the extent that he almost blunders and drops it down the five graduated rows of seats below him. But fortunately, or maybe unfortunately, he holds on.

The voice is as familiar as the backseat of Yuta’s motorcycle and coming from the level of seats behind Shotaro, so he turns around. Class has devolved to the point that having a full conversation stage-whisper style is about the least disruptive thing occurring.

Sungchan’s oversized frame and comforting smile loom over Shotaro from above, like a benevolent version of the mechanical surveillance vultures Sungchan had once gushed in horror that the American government was trying to build.

“Did I scare you?” Sungchan asks.

Shotaro fakes a glare at his best friend, but only ends up chuckling.

“How could I be scared by a 185cm walking teddy-bear?”

Sungchan tries to look hurt but giggles right back.

“Did you get the stuff?”

Shotaro nods, angling his hand so Sungchan can see the pill.

“Why were you so late to class?” Shotaro asks, feeling irrational panic nipping at the edges of his mind for the first time all day to suggest that maybe Sungchan was held up because someone caught him with drugs. Shotaro wonders why this thought hadn’t occurred to him earlier, hoping that’s an indication of its ridiculousness.

“I got caught up talking to Sawako in the nurse’s office,” Sungchan explains, and Shotaro relaxes a little. “She was very chatty for some reason and I felt bad. I think she’s lonely. Did you know Kaneda got her pregnant?”

“No, what?” Shotaro makes a face as disapproving as he feels. “That asshole. Of course he wouldn’t use protection. Ugh, anyway. Did you get what you wanted? Everything go smoothly?”

Sungchan pulls a button-size plastic bag from his pocket and displays, not quite covertly enough for Shotaro’s liking but he’ll live, the identical red and white capsule within.

“Perfect.”

“I was thinking,” Sungchan continues, “Sawako said she thinks there’ll be a battle between the Capsules and the Clowns tonight. Should we try to catch some of it?”

Shotaro leans his elbows onto the desk in front of his friend and smiles, indulgent.

“While we’re high for the first time? Sounds like a shitty idea.” Sungchan pouts like Shotaro knew he would, so he adds a “we can feel it out in the moment, though,” because he is a weak man when it comes to Sungchan’s wants and needs. They are both that way towards each other, even when it gets them into trouble. But as Yuta always says, “memorable trouble is worth it”; i.e., if it makes a good story in the future, might as well go for it.

“Yuta would kill me if he found out though,” Shotaro wagers, “and I mean that literally.”

The last class of the day ends as he’s speaking and he and Sungchan make plans for meeting in the evening as they filter out of the musty, chipping paint, brutalist structure which is supposed to pass for a place of learning.

Shotaro finds Yuta where he always does after school: unsheathing his motorcycle in the back parking lot.

Yuta’s bike is a souped-up Honda painted to look like a 1940s bomber. Yuta wears a black leather biking suit he probably slipped on in the men’s room before heading out and pulls a helmet decorated with clown makeup over his black mullet as he greets his little brother, following the exchange by offering a similar helmet to Shotaro.

They hop on and head out onto the streets of Neo-Tokyo. Skyscrapers tower grey in the daytime light what feels like miles above the litter-strewn street and block out the sun. They’re so massive they could probably each hold an entire city’s worth of people, Shotaro reckons, and they move sluggishly in opposition to the trajectory of the bike, like cargo ships trudging against water.

“Good day?” Yuta asks when they stop at an intersection next to Flower Alley Mall.

“Yeah,” Shotaro assures. “Sungchan heard something about a battle tonight? What’s up with that?”

“I don’t want to get into it, but he’s right,” Yuta admits. “But don’t try to tag along or I’ll murder you.”

With that, the light turns and Shotaro grabs hold of Yuta, mumbling “I know” fondly into his shoulder. They zip away like that the rest of the way to their apartment, the capsule burning nuclear in Shotaro’s pocket as he’s left to ponder his next move.

Reader’s Corner: Those Snow White Notes, Your Lie in April Revisited, and A Couple of Cuckoos

She’s My Knight, Vol. 1

The premise of this lovely little comic is simple: Ichinose has always been the popular kid, attracting attention from all the girls until cool, collected Mogami comes along, stealing not only Ichinose’s popularity, but also his heart. I’m a total sucker for the Mogami type in manga and anime—the tall, athletic, boyish girl—and she makes a perfect pairing with the pitiful Ichinose, who increasingly, as the volumes progresses, falls apart around her. There’s not much else here—just lots of gags and near-miss moments, so in that sense, She’s My Knight may end up being a forgettable series. But just as Ichinose is the damsel to Mogami’s knight, this series might be rescued, too, by hints that the girl is not as clueless as she seems. But even if that’s not true, even if the series means to simply tease us for endless chapters and results in a series that isn’t unique in any way, the manga would still hit the sweet spot of feel good romantic comedy so well that it doesn’t really matter—this is the perfect volume to open as you sit back, kick your feet up, and prepare to fall in love. ~ Twwk

A Couple of Cuckoos, Vol. 1

Nagi Umino learns quite the shocking truth: As an infant, he had accidentally been switched with another baby, and had essentially grown up his whole life as an adopted kid. To make matters worse, upon meeting his birth parents, and the girl, Erika Amano, that he had been switched with, he finds out that their parents had decided that the easiest way to resolve this whole matter is to have the two of them get married so that all the parents can officially consider both of them their children! With an anime adaptation announced recently, I figured I’d check out the first volume of the manga, and true to the name, it’s quite crazy. With a mess of family relations and some side romantic antics involving a smart girl Nagi has a crush on, this manga definitely has all the fun of a good romcom, and there’s not really too much that annoyed me about it, either, other than that the volume ended way too soon. I also liked how it touches on the awkwardness of trying to connect with a birth family you didn’t grow up with, and I hope future volumes do more with that along with the romance stuff. ~ stardf29

Street Fighter Gaiden: Vol. 1

Videogames have made the transition to manga many times, and some have even done it on multiple occasions, which is the case with Street Fighter. I picked up Street Fighter Gaiden, which has two volumes and focuses on various stories in the SF series, focusing on various characters. Ken and Ryu get their due, and so does Chun-Li, who is some nice panels participates in a drug bust in San Francisco. Other stories feature Fei Long desiring to do something more challenging than be a movie star, leading to travels to Japan and a tragic accident while stopping some criminals; T. Hawk protecting fellow natives from another tribe who are being harassed by Balrog; and the final story, where Guile becomes involved in underground fights while trying to prevent a friend from getting involved with Shadaloo, the secret evil organization of the series. The stories veer from the traditional backgrounds of some of the characters, like Fei Long and Guile, but it’s interesting to read how the author puts them together. Fans of Street Fighter should check this series out! The drawings in the manga looks dated and a little rough here and there, but I certainly enjoyed it and will be picking up volume two. ~ Samuru

The Dawn of the Witch, Vol. 1

Witches seem to be making a bit of comeback in manga lately. The Dawn of the Witch, one of the new entries, seems at first blush to add little that’s new to the canon, assembling a weak main character mage, overpowered but very young looking master witch, talented witch / love interest, and a beastman, as they undertake a special type of journey / course assigned by their magic school. However, tropes can be deceiving. Volume one tells a story at breakneck pace, developing relationships, adding backstory, providing action, and dumping a ton of information, which while it could become oppressive, in this manga, is captivating. The world and its history are fascinating, the way magic is used has some uniqueness (including a cursed, talking staff?), and the divisiveness between witches and the church shows depth. The world-building in just this one volume is extensive and engaging, and the story seems to be in good hands, while the art and character design, developed by two additional members of this three-person manga team, are just as extraordinary, bringing vividness to action scenes, boldness to the characters themselves, and lettering and paneling that add further dimension to goings-on. The frequent and obvious fanservice, unfortunately, can be quite distracting; it’s not a coincidence that it takes a back seat once the story ramps up, indicating how unimportant it is. By the last chapter or two, there’s no room for panty shots; we’re swept up into the lives of these characters, the choices they’ve made and are making, and the world they inhabit, which in terms of recent witch manga, is second to none. ~ Twwk

Those Snow White Notes, Vol. 1

Moving to Tokyo after the death of his guardian, grandfather, and teacher, Setsu is a lost soul. Though he carries with him a shamisen, the ancient three-stringed instrument, Setsu is unable to play, haunted by the words of his grandfather which told him he was unworthy of it. But will this move to Tokyo and the people he meets there be just what Setsu needs to find his sound? The first half of this initial volume is one long chapter, and reads like a one-shot, an almost self-contained story of Setsu’s serendipitous meeting with a hopeful actress, Yuna, and the impact the two have on one another. However, this front half of volume one isn’t particularly distinct in any way, and despite a desire to connect emotionally with readers through the young protagonist and and his family, the panels fall flat in this aspect, as do they when depicting the sound of the shamisen, whose tone and rhythm I could feel but not the emotion it gives. The second half of volume, however, establishes the story and characters better. Setsu’s personality is better defined, as is his brother’s, and new supporting characters are introduced as Setsu begins to attend school, setting the stage for a club-centered drama, a la Kono Oto Tomare and Chihayafuru, two other anime centered on historic Japanese pastimes. And like those, there’s potential here, though it will be lost if Those Snow White Notes can’t find consistency and an emotional anchor, which would be a shame, as the first episode of currently-airing anime adaptation showed how a few adjustments could turn this story into something quite special. ~ Twwk

Your Lie in April, Vol. 4

I’m continuing my re-read of Your Lie in April and have reached Volume four, a part of this series which can be a tough read. Kousei has finally returned to the piano scene after two years away to find that his childhood rivals have only improved. Both of them were motivated by him to become better. Emi saw him when she was very little and it inspired her to play, believing in her heart to play for joy, while Takeshi is driven to perfection to reach what Kousei had always achieved. Then there’s Kousei himself. In these chapters, readers bear witness to the emotional and physical abuse Kousei underwent as a child and it’s hard to witness. But it does help present a complete picture of the person Kousei has become so far. This is a challenging volume because of what happens, but it’s important to the overall narrative. Beautiful artwork and emotional moments will keep me moving through this re-read. ~ MDMRN

Skip Beat, Vol. 17

The “Suddenly, a Love Story” arc is an oddity, a portion of Skip Beat that is quite long and cumbersome, with not enough Kyoko and perhaps too much of the unappealing side of Ren, full of insecurity and lacking much of his initial appeal. Volume 17 thankfully puts the arc to rest with a quick but exciting (and revealing) finale which pits Ren against no, not Shotaro, but Reino, the abusive and perhaps occultist musician. The next arc also begins in this volume, introducing Kuu, a movie star more famous, it seems, than any previous character in the series. Although we get to know him just a bit, he appears to be a rival who could threaten Ren. He also immediately challenges Kyoko, providing the potential for her to really chew up character interactions, something sorely missed in the previous arc. The final chapters of volume 17 feel like a breath of fresh air, hopefully pointing toward compelling chapters ahead—though I fear the problem of an unappealing Ren may be not be solved anytime soon. ~ Twwk

Who do you think could be called Jaedo’s children, both official and unofficial? For me it is personally Jeno (more do then jae) and shotaro (newly adopted child for both). Shotaro was kinda pushed with jaedo in maw era and the christmas video had them as a trio so that is why i aligned sho with jaedo rather than yuta who seems more like a brother and less as a parenting figure. I did not put jaemin even tho he is supposedly jaes son because i dont feel they have quite a parent child relo, jaehyun seems quite apprehensive sometimes and they dont look the closest, thinking back to 2018 when jh avoided jms advances quite aggressively. Renjun i see more as what taeyong is to do, in the sense of their somewhat bickering relationship and i personally think why renjun struggles with do, although they try hard to connect is because do already has a taeyong in his life and when he tries to adjust a taeyong type person to be like a jeno relationship (adoring and doting) it is hard for renjun who is a more dominant character. Not saying tae and renjun are anything alike, its the way that they would act with do that makes them similar. Do alr has a tom and jerry type bestie and an adorable son so renjun needs to find another niche to fit into dos life. Also a couple of asks ago you talked about jaedo being more in sync than taedo. I think this is because as besties, taedo arent supposed to be completely in sync like a romantic partner is. They are opposing best friends that dont quite meet in the middle, but that is what is fun about their dynamic, they dont really have a give and take, its either both take or both give. They clash because they are independent minded and individualistic people that can risk arguing because friendship is more easily mendable than romantic relationships. Jaedo are in one mind because romantic partners complement each other in a way that they have the same general mindset and are willing to compromise. It is obvious that Jae really adores Don the way that he probably thinks that if he allows himself a bit of leeway to act affectionately with Do, he will go overboard and therefore risk exposing everything. Its either all or nothing. Do knows this and so doesnt push himself onto Jae like he does with Haechan or Taeyong or Jungwoo. Its not a scenario where one gives and the other refuses and thats kinda why i latched onto jaedo. It doesnt look like they hate each other but it seems kinda uncharacteristic for Do to sorta not give Jae much attention compared to other members he is close with given their history as mc hosts and long time friends.

Jeno.

Most of neos fall under "children" category but Doyoung goes out of his way to support and deepen his bond with Jeno. He makes sure Jeno is not drifting apart. Doyoung invites him to dinners, to guest in his vlives, calls him his son, makes him wear matching costumes for Halloween, gifts an electrical razor and a plush toy identical to his favourite (the polar bear), etc. I can't say I fully understand hyung-donsaeng system, but I know that hyungs are tasked with supervision of the younger, and this relationship often continues the whole life.

I think Haechan and Doyoung have a deeper relationship (living and singing together helps), however Jeno is a more traditional donsaeng. A younger person who listens and follows well. As for Jaemin, Doyoung sends money for his BD.

Shotaro is WinWin2. He was a helpless foreigner who needed help and guidance, so Doyoung took him under his wing. In addition to MAW and recording supervision he also treated Shota to dinners. If Shotaro is interested, there is a chance of him becoming Jeno2, I think. It will hardly happen without Shota and Do working together though. Doyoung is very busy right now to forge new deep relationships.

I can't say I know where Jeno and Jaehyun stand. Jeno likes Jae a lot, might even prefer him to Doyoung as a hyung (he dares to hesitate between the two, heh), but Jaehyun's bias is Chenle, and it shows in their interactions. They play basketball together, too. Jaehyun is like a cool uncle to Jeno rather than a second father, tbh. Or so it looks from what I've seen.

Jae helped Shota because Doyoung helped. And Shota is a nice guy like Jae. I haven't heard any more TMIs about them though. I doubt Jae will go out of his way and connect with Shota unless there is an opportunity for a chat and bonding (be it dancing lessons or video games). They look pretty compatible though. If they were to work in one unit Jae would teach Shota how to tease Do, heh.

Renjun wasn't in Rookies to imprint on Doyoung as a baby. And I agree with your thoughts and the comparison with Tae. Doyoung doesn't need a challenge in a younger neo, he has enough in Haechan. And he can't play the game of wits, he will win but only through hurting Renjun. Look how quickly Do took to making jokes about Renjun's shoulders. Taeyong takes Do's sarcasm and punches readily because it's a form of attention to him.

Agree with your take on TaeDo and JaeDo.

And it's not only Jaehyun. Doyoung needs to touch people, it's a way of connection, control and feeling the other people. His hands often work on their own. And give him a lot of bad habits. Like he can tuck a pack of MC cards between his legs and sit on them without noticing he does something not appropriate for a public event. Therefore, it's not normal that Doyoung restricts himself from touching Jaehyun, considering the latter is never opposed to it.
