I’m happy that Tumblr exists because it’s really the only social media platform where I feel safe to have an opinion and post whatever I want without people being rude and incredibly mean or just straight up bigoted about it

I mean, we have some of the most wacky history and Internet culture, and we even gaslit ourselves into making the greatest mafia movie ever made and we even have national holidays and tumblr sexymen

Legacy of the Folgers Incest Commercial

The other day I saw an ad for Folgers coffee that used the song "bad reputation" by Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, and I thought, do they know? Did they pick this song because they wanted to appeal to a younger audience, or were they poking fun at what the true reputation of Folgers coffee has become? Because when I think of Folgers, as I'm sure that many other people on this hellsite can agree, I only think of one thing. That's right, I'm talking about the incest commercial.

For those of you that don't know, in 2009, Folgers wanted to reimagine their classic Christmas ad with a new version, titled, "Coming Home." The ad was intended to be homey and nostalgic, focusing on a family coming together for the holiday season. But what we got was a commercial that had some... other implications about family.

The siblings portrayed in the commercial came across to some as uncomfortably flirty. And the internet agreed. Soon there were memes everywhere, fanart, parody videos— even fanfiction.

 So what happened?

Folgers is a big brand, after all. This commercial would have likely had to go through multiple higher-ups and marketing executives who all watched it and said, “yeah, looks good. Let’s air it.”

The idea behind the commercial was that it featured an older brother coming home from his work in the Peace Corps overseas, only to discover that his younger sister had grown up quite a bit while he was away. This was intended to be addressed in a playful manner since he hardly recognized her, and everyone loved the idea.

On the surface, this idea could have worked. I think the main issue is that A: the two actors portrayed had way too much chemistry with each other, and B: in their attempts to make this ad feel cozy like a Hallmark Christmas movie, they...shot it like a Hallmark Christmas movie, romance and all.

I think the lesson to be learned here is that next time, maybe show your ad to a test group first before airing it nationally.

hello my dear and beloved mutuals! so i knew this month’s gallacraft theme was gonna hit me like a choo-choo train, but i didn’t anticipate just how big of a train that would be.

i don’t want to take away the spotlight but in true mickey fashion, making the whole thing about himself that day (as he should’ve!!!), i’m gonna cut a little corner of this tumblr national holiday to tell you something. why? because the entirety of this amazing fandom is my safe space, for everything. fandom stuff, gay stuff, struggle busses (trains?), anything.

one reason why that coming out scene is so near and dear to my heart is because i never got to have that moment for myself, ever. i always knew who i was, but life’s a bitch and i never got to live it as i saw and dreamt it for myself ever since i could remember. here, today, i feel ready. i feel eons safer on a hellsite amongst faceless friends than anywhere with my truth.

now if you wanna leave you can. you know that i’m a boy and that’s all that matters to me. but for the folks that like a long, quasi-happy ending story here’s mine: i always knew i was a boy ever since i could remember. my mom knew even before i did. it wasn’t just the toys, the clothes, the haircuts. it was about this unmistakable identity that allowed me to carry myself through the world as the boy i was meant to be.

at 16 i was locked and loaded, ready to come out to my family. even to my fucking dad. but then at 17 someone told me that my identity was just a collateral effect of my bipolar. someone that should’ve been qualified in helping a kid navigate his diagnosis, his mania, his new reality, told me that who i was and had been since the very beginning was just as fake as the spiders on the walls and the conviction that a bad guy was coming to get me. it was a symptom, not an answer. it was treatable. i was so lost, so scared, so mad but i believed it.

until recently. until a community of wonderful people unknowingly put me back on track, working the simple magic of being kind and accepting of who i said i was, no questions asked. i truly owe you guys so much.

i’m still paola! it is a stereotypically “girl” name but it’s mine. the first person i came out to as trans was my wonderful grandma. she just smiled at me and said but you will keep the name paola, right? it fits you! and when i asked her why? why does it fit me? she said because it means rebirth. it suits your heart.

and it did. it still does.

Weekend Thoughts early edition - October 8

Early edition because I have tomorrow (Monday) off for another national holiday (Korea spaces out its holidays super weird, I don't know either. After tomorrow, there are no public holidays until Christmas).

I have been shadowbanned (?) or something on tumblr - I am not showing up in public tags and messages/asks are turned off 🤷 I have no clue why and have submitted a ticket but do not expect them to answer for at least two weeks. I can't believe I give money to this hellsite voluntarily.

However, to balance out the highs and lows of life, yesterday I saw babygirl of my life (Seohyun) and she is still the most beautiful person I have ever seen in person and so on fucking point as a performer, and I will be riding that high for the next two weeks at least 🥰

On a semi-related note, Song of Bandits is honest-to-god pretty good (esp. if you like manchu western as an action genre), although it really needed more of the girls and less of the men *cough*. Anyway, watch me ship Seohyun and Lee Hojung in everything they're in together (which, I have two nickels).

Also on a higher note, I finally got a couple of CR hoodies I ordered a while ago and am very pleased with the sweater weather in Korea. Climate change has fucked us all and we're only going to get like two weeks of fall weather before it's freezing, but by god, I am going to enjoy those two weeks.

Game of the week: Mageseeker, which has me feeling a way about Lux. And also possibly Morgana and Kayle *cough*.

Even with the Pacifist ending reveal I didn’t like him much, and it took until doing a geno run for me to really appreciate him and start looking deeper. Pacifist is cool, and some of the neutral endings are especially interesting, but so much about how that one was presented stuck out to me. Flowey’s death was the one that made me feel the most guilty. That love for Flowey as a character also led to meeting a majority of people I talk to now, because of a mutual interest in him. There’s so much I may not have done without that. I may not have ever started writing, or have made my own characters, or even gotten anywhere in art, etc. And it really brought me out of a bad place. So I’ve been on this hellsite for over 5 years, since I was 11 years old(and turned 12 later into that year). Surprisingly, I think it’s been more of a positive influence for me than a negative one. There are worse places I could’ve drifted to and I ended up questioning a lot of what I thought due to this place. It was what pushed me to really think about my sexuality and all that. And now I’m bisexual and agnostic.
