The moment Hunter slips through the door, he knows something is desperately wrong. The needled talons of dread claw up his throat from the pit of his stomach. He tries to swallow it back, but it lodges tightly just behind his tongue.
Hunter takes in the occupants of the space. Wrecker, still unconscious, and Crosshair, sitting next to him with his rifle propped at the ready against his thigh. Their sister’s absence is cavernous.
“Where’s Omega?” Hunter asks.
Crosshair’s shoulders rise and fall as he takes a deep breath. He stands, leaning his rifle against the wall, and turns to face Hunter head on.
“Omega turned herself in.” Crosshair states it, voice pressed flat of emotion. His hand trembles at his side, unchecked, as Crosshair looks anywhere but Hunter’s face. “She…” his dull voice catches, “She did it to save Pabu. They wouldn’t have stopped searching until they found her. It was only a matter of time.” He glances down, notices his hand and grips it in the other. “I tried to reason with her. She knew the risks.
“But I failed to protect her,” Crosshair continues. “I was supposed to get a tracker on the ship, but I missed. I missed, and she doesn’t know. She trusted me to make the shot, and I missed.” He fists his trembling hand. “I’m sorry, Hunter.”
The initial, reactive twist of Hunter’s features as the news settles is hidden behind his helmet. They just got her back, and the Empire snatched her away again. Righteous anger burns deep, and it takes every piece of Hunter’s exhausted resolve not to become violent, to throw something, break something, destroy something. It isn’t fair, what this galaxy has taken from them, has done to them, over and over again.
Hunter takes a staggered step forward, and Crosshair flinches. It is subtle, almost imperceptible. But Hunter sees it, and his heart fractures further. His anger does not extend to Crosshair. How could it, when he sees his own turmoil and regret reflected in his little brother’s averted eyes? Hunter puts his anger away, thrusts it into the darkest corner of his mind to fester, and reaches up to take off his helmet. Crosshair’s gaze slides over to meet his as soon as his face is exposed.
“I know you did everything you could,” Hunter says. He swallows. There is no comfort in the truth, just the reality. “Omega would have gone with or without you backing her up.”
Hunter remembers seeing his sister after he and Wrecker were captured, small and fierce, energy bow drawn, refusing to hide away if there was any possibility of saving her brothers. Omega isn’t a soldier, but loyalty and sacrifice are saturated in her blood. Just like Tech.
Naked surprise twitches Crosshair’s expression before settling back into careful neutral. He nods stiffly, looking away. “She put the people of Pabu before herself, risked everything so that we might find Tantiss. I was ambushed by troopers when I was lining up the shot for the tracker. I…I couldn’t recover my position in time…”
Hunter rests a hand on Crosshair’s pauldron. “Omega won’t blame you, Cross. I don’t blame you. We’ll find her again.”
Crosshair swallows visibly and steadies himself before looking Hunter in the eye again. A small, despondent smile quirks the edge of his lips. “Not if she finds us first.”

A Little Too Late
Angstpril 2024: Day 12 (454 words)
Kya stepped out of the bedroom, her teacup still warm in her hand. She thought she smelled breakfast. With a smile, she stepped into the kitchen to find a covered bowl on the table, but no Lin. She looked at the time, and it gave her a jolt. She set the cup down and she scooted toward the front door, a little too late.
Through the window, she saw Lin’s sato pull into the street and roll away to work.
***
Lin balanced the bags in her elbow as she held the door open for the elderly couple leaning on each other for support. She smiled at the way the two men apologized for jostling each other while trying to manage their own canes and bags. The one closer to her patted her on the arm and thanked ‘the young lady’ for being so gracious to them. She nodded, and stepped inside the clinic, a little too late.
Across the room, Kya was ushering a different elderly couple back into the receiving area for their appointment.
***
They pulled into the parking area and Kya jumped out to collect the basket of fruit and vegetables Pema had asked them to bring for dinner that night. Lin took a moment to shed her armor into the back seat and lock the safe, then shrug a loose short chengosam over her undershirt. She stepped around to help Kya with the bags, and they hustled to the ferry’s pier, a little too late.
With a sigh, Kya just shook her head. She didn’t really have the energy to bend them fast enough to catch up.
***
Lin closed her briefcase and locked it. The night felt close and heavy after so many close calls all day. She was more tired than if she had just worked all day then come home late. With a sigh, she shook her head. The click of the balcony door told her that Kya was finished with her evening’s meditation. Lin moved quietly into the kitchen and brewed a pot of tea. When it was done, she carried two cups into their bedroom, a little too late.
Kya was draped over the side of the bed, sound asleep.
***
Kya opened her eyes and focused on the gentle motion of tree branches in the breeze outside. She yawned and stretched. Lin’s arm around her waist flexed, pulling her closer. With a small smile, Kya wriggled backwards into her wife’s embrace.
Small signals from Lin indicated that she was quite awake, herself, and interested in a little shared activity.
Smirking, she said, “I thought we were going to meet Bumi for breakfast.”
The kiss at her back told her what Lin thought of that idea.
“Too late.”

Angstpril Day 12
A Little Too Late
Spoiler: This is an excerpt from Tethered to Life
Anakin moves forwards, letting the Force guide his moves as he attacks him. But Windu has always been good at fighting Dark Siders and Anakin never meant to give in like this, to the Dark Side even if he already committed Sidious because what else was he supposed to do? Still remembers what it felt like to be on his knees to a master again – not that he’s truly ever been anywhere else.
But any sense of calm evades him now. Can’t feel anything but the death and destruction and his steadily growing self-loathing and anger at the Jedi for things coming to this and for hurting his boys and –
Windu’s lightsaber swings up to clash against his. The duel is fast and furious. There’s other Jedi who come to join the fight and Anakin’s able to take a couple of them down until it’s only Windu again, but the Jedi Master is still holding his own.
Anakin doesn’t know when he moved wrong enough to leave an opening, but then Windu’s lunging forwards – irrespective of the fact that Anakin’s nearly about to take his head off – plunging his blade straight through Anakin’s lower chest.
He has no idea how far it went, but a strangled gasp escapes him and he hardly remembers falling, but he hits the floor at Windu’s feet a moment later. He just –
Still feels like a hole is steadily burning through him and the pain is only worse and worse by the moment – like his insides are on fire and it’s not stopping. He can’t breathe. Can’t – anything.
Blaster shots ring out in the background. It sounds far away but he can see the flashes so it must be somewhere close by, even if he can’t muster up enough energy to twist his enough to see what’s happening.
But he can hear the occasional cries of pain. It’s his boys and Windu is slaughtering all of them. This – this is why –
But there’s nothing he can do anymore. He failed. Failed. And he’s – he’s dying.
Can’t say he really… minds that. Not anymore. Not after everything. Means he’ll finally be free, but he doesn’t want to leave all his boys behind or Ahsoka or Padme and he’s never going to even get the chance to see his child –
Darkness slowly hazes over his vision, and he blacks out.

word count: 1073
content warnings: mentions of injury, medication & hospital(ish) setting
summary: after being seriously injured during a mission, march finally wakes up.
author's notes: ermmm hi :3 this is a sequel for the thing i wrote for day 2 and i kiinda feel like i'm cheating because today's prompt is barely in here but,,, for the sake of continuity it's gonna be this way LOL also march didn't deserve this tbh. i'll admit i'm evil
Tumblr media
When March wakes up, she's confused.
She registers a few things all at once, too, and it's not really helping: she's lying down on something soft, there's something else covering her body, her chest feels weird, and the light in this… place, wherever she is… It isn't very strong, but still too bright for her eyes, and she has to squint for a moment. Once they adjust, though, she can finally look around - and what she sees is the Astral Express's infirmary. She's lying in bed, and there's someone sleeping on the chair next to it.
Dan Heng.
…Right.
It's when she recognizes him that she also remembers what happened. The fight, the injury… Then Stelle and Dan Heng's worried faces above her, Dan Heng picking her up, asking her to stay awake?...
Maybe.
She isn't entirely sure about these last few things, they're all blurry in her mind, as if engulfed in thick fog. She remembers that she was in pain and shock and scared, though, so it's probably because of that - but even when she knows the reason, it's still a little frustrating. She doesn't like not being able to remember things. Even when it comes to a situation like this, she's pretty sure she would've preferred the details, no matter how terrifying all of that was for her at the moment.
She doesn't want any more black holes in her memory.
Now that she's awake, though, she will surely be able to fill in the blanks with the help of her friends…. If they want to talk about this, of course, and she has a feeling they won't. Not like she can't really blame them for that - it must've been quite scary for them as well… Especially if she has been unconscious long enough for someone else to fall asleep waiting for her to wake up.
“Dan Heng?” she says, and her voice is so weak it almost scares her. She doesn't really feel this weak - sure, she's still tired, and sleepy, but that might also be due to some medicine she might be under the influence of right now. To prove to herself that it’s really not that bad more than anything else, she attempts to pull herself up - and immediately fails.
Oh.
That's… Not ideal.
She waits for a moment, but nothing happens; either Dan Heng's sleep is too deep, or she was too quiet, even with her attempts to move. She tries to speak again, this time a bit louder.
“Dan Heng?”
Still nothing.
Alright, third time's the charm.
“Dan Heng!”
It's still not loud, and almost makes her cough, but it does the job; her friend flinches, suddenly awake, and for a moment looks startled - it almost makes her giggle. His eyes finally land on her, though, and then his expression instantly changes into a mix of… everything, really; worry and relief, surprise and happiness, before he manages to somewhat compose himself. Only his voice isn't quite as serious and steady as usual, the relief clearly present in there.
“March.” The way he says her name is so soft that makes her feel oddly warm inside. “March,” he repeats. He seems… Unsure; about what to do, what to say, and clearly struggling to find the right words, and she smiles.
“That’s my name alright,” she says, but it only takes a few seconds for her to remember something and for that smile of hers to fade.
“Dan Heng?” This time it's her who's hesitating. “I’m sorry.” She looks away from him, suddenly a heavy feeling in her heart. It's… Not very nice, obviously, but it's best to apologize as soon as she can.
At the very least, Dan Heng seems to be genuinely surprised by her apology, and it makes her feel a little better.
“What for?” he asks.
“I… must’ve made you terribly worried, right?” she replies, letting out a quiet sigh. “If I was more careful—” She doesn’t even manage to finish the second sentence and he's already shaking his head.
“No,” he says, and his voice is slightly more firm, but still gentle. Reassuring. “You didn’t do anything— if anything, I should apologize. If I was more careful nothing would’ve happened either, and now, if I got here even slightly too late…” His voice trails off, and March's expression softens when she hears that, her eyes filled with worry. Of course he feels responsible for that. Of course he feels like he should have protected her better. Dan Heng, who treats her like his younger sister and who would give his life for her without a second of hesitation.
But the most she can do right now is smile reassuringly - at the very least, she hopes it’s reassuring and not mostly tired.
“It’s not your fault either,” she disagrees and he nods, but still doesn’t look convinced, and… Ah. Maybe it's not the most appropriate thought at the moment, but March already knows that in a while, when all the emotions caused by this incident are dull, she’s going to tease him about how worried he was, even if just so slightly.
Not right now, though; especially since something else catches his attention - for the best for him, probably.
“You look tired,” he notices, and she can't help but feel like he's so glad to change the topic because he's afraid she might be about to try and start blaming herself for everything again. “You should rest more.”
Normally, she would’ve argued with him about that, but right now, she really does feel tired, she too can hear just how quiet her voice is, and… honestly, all this talking is draining her much more than it should.
“It’s alright.” Because it really is, even despite all that; in the end, she doesn't mind talking to Dan Heng at all, but by the time he says these two words, he has already stood up from his chair.
“I’ll— let the others know you're alright,” he says. “And I can get you something if you need anything.”
She thinks for a moment and shakes her head gently.
“I don't.”
“Okay. I'll be back soon, but please rest.” He gives her one more worried look before heading towards the door.
In a slightly different situation, right now it would've hit her how lonely this room is about to get, but it doesn't happen right now.
She falls asleep before Dan Heng even leaves the room.

They say, I'm a little too young to understand, but it's a little too late to hold my hand. You know I never subscribe to yes sir, no sir. Gonna learn, gonna love, gonna take my chance. It's a little too late for you to say, ooh, that I'm a little too young to feel this way. 'Cause I just wanna be loved. Just wanna be heard. Be lost in the feeling standing here at the door to my life. Now the day has arrived, so loud and clear, you hear me singing, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo. I'm singing, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo.

Finding The Truth a Little Too late
Author: Autobot2001 Genre: Fanfiction Fandom: Transformers Rating: T Warning: None Pairing: None Description: Mirage and Sunstreaker find out who Dylan is, but they're too late warning everyone. Note; this is a scene from my story Hidden Killer that I have yet to start, minus scenes inspired by prompts. This contains a spoiler. I debated whether I should post this ( and another scene snippet) or not with no ETA on the story being posted. Uncertain if anyone seeing the posts would read the story and think 'I already know what's going to happen'.
@chaos-company angstpril day 12; a little too late
Mirage’s skills in hacking systems impress Sunstreaker. He knows Mirage does it with good intentions as a spy. The two are aware of the consequences if they get caught doing an unauthorized investigation, but both don’t trust Dylan. They hack briefly to avoid detection, even if it delays uncovering the potential truth. They can only hope they’re not making a mistake by taking a while.
Today, a training mission awaits a few soldiers and Autobots. A simple mission to practice teamwork. For the recruits, this is part of basic training. For everyone else, it’s a refresher course. Mirage and Sunstreaker are concerned about Dylan taking part in the training. The Autobots being in bipedal form isn’t assuring. The concern is training to escalate into a battle. Mirage and Sunstreaker are unsure about Megatron’s willingness to collaborate with humans again, but they suspect that’s who Dylan is working for. "What if that’s true, rather than Dylan being an insider for the anti-Cybertronian group?” Mirage questions. “Either way, we’ve found nothing,” Sunstreaker reminds him, “even if we find something, how do we get the others to believe us? They know you wouldn’t fake data, but Dylan will argue against you.” "We have dedicated weeks to this. I know it’s because we’re not working on this for hours a day like I normally would. I think if we find nothing by the end of the week, that we accept we were wrong.” “Fine,” Sunstreaker says, irritated. Once the rest leave for training, Mirage and Sunstreaker will spend the entire day working on their investigation. They don’t have to worry about getting caught by someone walking into Mirage’s office.
“Trust training?” Megatron asks, intrigued. “A perfect place to attack,” Starscream suggests. “Silence! We stick to the plan to get Jamie away from the Autobots. I want them to discover everything, to witness the Autobots’ expressions. You have your orders, Austin. Do not fail me!” “Yes, sir,” Austin replies and ends the call. Austin knows Jadin can sense Jamie’s energy and that Jamie will protect the Autobots. He needs to get her to leave the base with no Autoots. Austin believes the training grounds won’t allow him to be successful. His goal is to have as few Autobots and soldiers as possible when provoking Jamie to take him elsewhere for a fight.
“You couldn’t tell me this, why?” “I would have, as soon as I had a lead,” Mirage explains, “What good is telling you there’s no one named Dylan Greene Living in DC. without a lead where to take our search next?” “Fair point, so?” “Facial identification. It’s not as easy as identifying a fingerprint, but it’s all we have left.” "That’s why you should have informed me. Too late now to get his cup from breakfast.”
The search takes all day, Several databases to find the correct facial ID match. Hacking the DC police database and the FBI’s most wanted turned up empty. While it seems random, Mirage searches the database of the asylum that burnt down. “Perhaps there’s a second survivor no one knows about,” Mirage explains. As he scrolls through the images, one catches both mechs’ eyes. “Stop, that’s him!” Sunstreaker comments, and gets the photo of Dylan he has, “He dyed his hair and got eye color changing contact lenses, but look at the face. We know Austin has a twin brother, but he wasn’t in the asylum with Austin.” “Frag, we have to warn everyone.” Mirage and Sunstreaker rush to the hangar as it’s time for everyone to return.
The two deactivate their holoforms and transform. They’re ready to explain everything as they know Optimus will ask why are they waiting for everyone to return. It’s uncommon for those returning from a mission to be welcomed back upon returning.
Upon arrival, Optimus questions the two’s reasoning for waiting for the team to return. He listens before arguing about the two’s lack of permission to search Dylan’s records. “You seriously have a jealousy problem,” Sideswipe accuses Sunstreaker, “and you got Mirage involved as well, that’s a new low for you-.” Clapping cuts off Sideswipe. The Autobots, Jamie, and the soldiers see that Dylan is the one clapping with an evil grin. “Well done, Mirage. Even if Sunstreaker convinced you to search my files, as you’d be too stupid to do it yourself,” this angers the yellow frontliner, “I wouldn’t do anything, Sunstreaker.”
