Anime Los Angeles 2024! Much less TMM cosplay rep this year versus last, but I caught one other Ichigo cosplayer towards the end of the day! Second pic is a poster of the adorable TMMN group I took pics with last year.

I bought every piece of TMM merch I could find. These beautiful tarot card prints of Ichigo + Ichisaya is from @rocodrop on Instagram.

My favorite panel of the day was a panel about old school 4Kids dubbing. I got to chat with Tara Sands and Steve Yurko from 4Kids about Mew Mew Power’s production, and Mew Mew Power allegedly being in the library of congress somehow??

I also met a ton of new people this con and I gave out my tumblr to quite a few people, so shout if you’re one of the people I met IRL today!

The comic store had a sidewalk sale with $1 bins today. I found a couple single issue Viz manga releases from 2003ish. This was back when they were mirroring manga so it would read left to right. Some fun examples of how this caused problems under the cut.

These first two sets of comparisons are from Ceres Celestial Legend. Original Japanese manga caps are on the left, my pics of the Viz English release are on the right.

A big problem with mirroring manga was that any text within artwork got reversed. Above you can see a character's shirt in panel 2 containing the letter "E" above the word "ELLE".

The English release edited this panel to cover the original artwork with a nearly identical design that faced the correct direction once mirrored, though the new text is inside a rectangle. I'm guessing the rectangle was a quick and dirty way to cover up the old text and avoid shading folds for the new text.

If you look on to panel 4 you can see that the English version did not bother to edit the same character's shirt. The top half of a backwards E is visible. Both the edited and unedited shirts make additional appearances later.

Sometimes certain panels were not mirrored, but I don't fully understand why. Choosing NOT to mirror select panels can easily lead to continuity errors or other issues.

Above you can see that the English release kept panel 1 facing it's original orientation. Note how the blonde character and the character in the portrait are wearing kimonos with the left side wrapped over the right. This is the traditionally correct method to wear a kimono (unless you're dead and it's your funeral).

Panel 4 of the English version is mirrored which makes it appear as though the character in the center is wearing a kimono incorrectly. All kimonos in following pages appear to be worn incorrectly as well, since they're mirrored too.

I also saw a few instances of weird choices made when translating Japanese text within artwork. It's unrelated to mirroring, so I'm skipping that stuff.

This next series is Silent Mobius, or as Viz called its issues Silent Mobius Blood and Silent Mobius Hell.

This series has the same problem with select non mirrored panels creating inconsistencies. Here you can see panel 1 of the English release maintained its original orientation while the remainder of the page was mirrored.

The same building appears again a few pages later here in panel 1. The English version is mirrored, so the positions of its towers in relation to each other don't match the other page.

Bonus weird translation direction here btw. I noticed a lot of signs in the Japanese version that originally contained both English and Japanese, but the English release replaced them with awkwardly stretched text in English only. There wasn't even anything on this page to justify mirroring it in the first place. You'd think they could have left it and kept the original signs.

I hit the image limit so I'm going to see if I can reblog this from myself and add another cut. There are two more side-by-sides I want to share.

"Gunpla"?: The Entire Haro Collection

Above, you have the Haro Basic line (with one exception). Then, we have a new line, of Ball Haro, Sangoku Soketsuden Haro, Momoharo, and Zakrello. Finally, we have the Tri-Star Haros. That's most of the Haropla line in its entirety (plus one from the SD SS line). These images above comprise the main Haro line... well, minus a few. I'll get to those. You'll note of course i got 3x the tri star haro so i could have one of each number. All of these have been panel lined, and some of them have had molotow liquid chrome applied to some limbs. Oh yeah, i believe they have all been buffed to 10000 grit with Godhand sponges. I believe the Ball Haro also has some GM154 metallic green gundam marker on the eyes. And you might be saying "wait, aren't there two separate green haros that aren't from the SDSS line?" and the answer is Yes! The Haro Basic Green is sitting on another shelf alongside my HGTO RX-78-2:

Finally, here are the Haro suits! These guys were a real joy to put together. First up we have the Haroloader, this thing was a joy!

This has been panel lined. The arms were panel lined with molotow liquid chrome and some surfaces coated in it. Also, silver and bronze sharpies in some places? I'm surprised those came out looking half decent at all but the effect is kinda subtle and hard to see in pictures. Maybe you can pick out which surfaces are which? Next up, the Harofitter:

I forgot to put the cat ears up on the Harofitter for the photoshoots i was doing today :( Anyway this guy has also been panel lined, and the little roller has been coated in one of the metallic dark blue gundam markers. You can see in the second photo it is "working on" the injection mold machine (a review for another post). Finally, the Haroloader:

Saw Eliza (Clarke) and Tasya (Echo) at Dutch Comic Con (HDCC) today. To answer your first question: yes, they both looked absolutely stunning!! 🤩🤭 As a bonus, the Q&A panel was also very fun and interesting. Didn't take notes (or pics 🙈), but here are some things that stood out to me:

Tasya auditioned for multiple roles before getting the part of Echo, one of them being Anya's. They both concluded not getting that part was for the better, since Anya died and all. After a few auditions she also started to wonder what these people wanted from her, until she read about Echo spitting Bellamy in the face and it all became clear to her.

Eliza's least fav season was season 3 (too dark and gross) and season 7 (she didn't like killing Bellamy). Tasya agreed.

Eliza is positive that Clarke would do back flips if she could, if that would impress Lexa, "because she loved her. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ " She's also sure Clarke could do back flips (while she herself can't).

Asked about their toughest scenes to shoot, Eliza mentioned the long night filming in the rain when Finn died, while Tasya talked about the running around barefood in nothing but bandages after Mount Weather. Emotionally, Tasya also mentioned having to tell Bellamy that Octavia died.

There was also a very funny story about being visited by an actual bear while filming in the mountains/woods. Apparently Eliza raised her hands at that moment and Tasya thought it was her (pretty strange) reaction to the bear. It wasn't till now that it turned out Eliza was just following the script and had no clue about that freaking bear coming up behind her. (Sorry, this is probably one of those "you had to be there (in the audience)" kind of moments - I swear it was funny though!)

If they could have played anyone else, Eliza would have picked Murphy, Tasya would have picked either Octavia, Lexa or Jaha.

When asked which character they'd "get back from the death" they named (after a little one on one 😄) Lexa, Bellamy, Monty, Harper, Jasper, Finn, King Roan and Luna. I was this close 🤏 to shouting Madi, as I'm sure they'd agree if they'd thought of her! (FYI us Dutchies are not the shouting through panels kind of audience) I did appreciate they started with Lexa and love that they thought of Luna though!!

When Eliza heard about Lexa's return in season 7, she was stoked, because she loved seeing and working with Alycia again, but then she was "urgh!!" after finding out it wasn't really Lexa - yet still she was happy "because Alycia is just so cool".

Some highlights from today! I met so many cool MH cosplayers and the MH panel was so much fun!

In the video I asked Garret what his favorite and least favorite characters were, if he had any.

It’s hard to hear him but he said his favorite was probably Cleo and he didn’t really have any least favorites, except for maybe a few background characters he wasn’t really a fan of! I assumed his favorite would be Frankie lol.

Also we found out during the panel that there was an idea for a Naked Mole Rat MH doll?? Idk what to do with that information but it came from Garret himself lol.

That’s Karen Strossman on the floor in the last pic btw lol. She was trying to hear a fan’s question and immediately got on the floor, she did it so naturally it was so funny 😭

Firefish - a twitter alternative

TLDR: Looks like twitter, functions better. Lets you interact across multiple platforms. Allows NSFW. Has built in anti AI scraping.

If you ever used Twitter, it's going to look similar in structure, so the learning curve is low. There's more features that that, but they're not so intrusive you HAVE to learn them right away but also aren't hard to find. It's a nice balance.

The big difference is post length- it allows up to 8000 characters, so like Mini-Tumblr.

one of the features I like that familiar's but better is if you hover cursor over name on desktop is it pops up the profile for the person and a follow button. So you can immediately hover over name and get context about the person posting when it's not someone you already follow. Is this health info being posted by a professional or by someone that thinks you should stick rocks in your vagina?

That feature also means its incredibly easy to follow people regardless of the instance. On Mastodon it was extremely annoying to follow people. If that the thing that put you off Mastodon, Firefish fixed that and made it better than Twitter.

Firefish runs off ActivityPub, so it lets you follow and interact with anyone using the plugins for that. So includes Mastodon, WordPress, PeerTube, Pixelfed, Lemmy, Misskey, and Tumblr is allegedly developing an integration to run it.

Okay, NSFW content! We're about to get slightly in the weeds here. whether NSFW content is allowed is generally by server. When you go to join Firefish, it'll ask you what server you want to use and it'll tell you about rules. If you want NSFW, pick one that allows!

That's it. If you picked one that did not, it generally won't allow you to follow things that do or boost stuff from a location that did.

NOW, A GREAT FEATURE! Spoilering stuff is super easy on Firefish. Just click the button! Say you see something you wanna boost but its *not* spoilered. You can boost AND spoil the image/text of the quoted item! MAGIC.

now, on to antennas.

The Antenna feature on there lets you track tags or users in a separate panel so you can see it in one spot. You can also add NEGATIVE tags to the antenna. So say you want to see news about your city. So you set the main tag as the City. But you don't want sports news. So you can put in negative tags of sports, specific sport names, and individual teams in the city. And then you get news about the location, but no sports

For fandom purposes, you can use it to filter out things you just don't vibe with. hate that one ship? BEGONE.

PROFILES: you can stick hashtags in your profile and it'll turn up in searches easily. also it will ask you "are you a cat?" If you say yes, it gives your profile pic cat ears.

Overall when I'm posting links to Firefish posts (or posts via something from ActivityPub hosted sites that I interacted with via Firefish), so far it renders the preview link well on most platforms. I'm not sure how it works for embedding a whole message into a static page (like you could do with Twitter for news articles).

AN IMPORTANT NERDY NOTE: okay, you wanna sign up for Firefish now. Select from the servers offered some have different rules restrictions and some have Non-english default languages. Pick the one you like. If you pick Firefish.social itself that one IS the largest but also it gets day one code updates... so sometimes it gets funky or won't load properly for a few hours. If that will drive you bonkers, pick *any* other server. The server size is almost irrelevant because Firefish plays so well with other services!

also, if you don't see one today, check again in a few days! admins rotate through open enrollments to keep the growth rate managable. also, if you're *that* kind of nerd, you can host your own server. Even with only YOU on it. and it still interacts normally with the rest of the ActivityPub servers!

On June 8th 1865 the Glenfarcas distillery was acquired by John Grant, marking the beginning of a period of major expansion. Glenfarclas is one of the few independently owned distilleries on Speyside and has been run by the Grant family since 1865. The distillery also boasts the largest stills of any of the Speyside distilleries. The name Glenfarclas literally means “Glen of green grassland” The distillery sits in the middle of open farmland at the end of a short road that connects the distillery to the A95. It has to be said that Glenfarclas is not the prettiest of distilleries and it gives the impression of being mainly built in the 1950’s. The visitor centre is quite a modern building, with lots of tartan, but is a bit lacking in “soul”. That said, there is a lovely tasting room the “Ship’s Room” that has wood panelled walls and furniture taken from the 1910’s cruiser the RMS Empress of Australia. The Grants were the first to open a visitor centre in a distillery in 1973 Where Glenfarclas scores points is the friendliness of its tour staff. Unlike some of the big name Speyside distilleries, which run tours like a production line, Glenfarclas is a more intimate set up where the tours are for small groups and the people that guide them are not rushing to keep to a schedule. Six generations of Grants have shaped Glenfarclas, from 1865 until today. This guaranteed a constancy of quality and foresight that a durable product as whisky needs. There is hardly another distillery that has as much high quality and old whiskies in its warehouses as Glenfarclas.

I had a wee look to see what the Glenfarcas Whiskies were fetching at auction and they regularly go for 4-5 thousand pounds, the one in the pics with the black case went for 10 thousand in 2017, it's a 60 year old, it's a old presented in a crystal decanter, only 360 bottles were made.

These past three days I have been on this small trip with my mom, and it was really benefical to me mentally. I now feel energized for this last step in the work I have to do for my thesis. I took a lot of pictures I'll post in these days because I'm really proud of some of them, and I got to see incredible places (like the castle in the pic which looks like it's right out of a fairytale).

Thesis diary #49

I have three weeks to edit my whole thesis, get approval from my professor and upload the thesis on the university's website. I plan on having a finished version on my thesis in two weeks, so that I'll have enough time for any correction or other additional thing that might pop up. Today was the first day of writing what hopefully will be the final version of the thesis. In the morning I finished the Bibliography and fixed the introduction. In the afternoon I started working on the first chapter, there I had to make simple corrections for the majority of the chapter, and then fix a bit more the final part in which I present the witch trial I researched. The work I did today felt smooter than I expected, and I really hope to finish this whole thing as soon as possible.

Productive things I did today:

planned all the work I have to do for my thesis in these weeks

finished writing the bibliography of the thesis

finished editing the new introduction of the thesis

started updating my travel journal

updated my reading journal

edited the first chapter of the thesis ( I am technically still working on it right now, as I am writing this on a small break I took. I'd love to finish working on this thing by the end of the day, but I am not sure I'll manage)

Self care thing I did today:

read first thing in the morning

took breaks when I needed, since I worked on my thesis for more hours than I usually do in a day

crocheting! ( I am more or less done with half of the panels I need to complete the carding project I am working on)

As an Ashbert lover, I feed off of what little content there is of Ash and Herbert canonly meeting. They only ever meet in comics (which sucks, because I’d love for Herbert to be in the Evil Dead game but oh well). Originally, there were only two short comic arcs where Ash and Herbert met (each one only had a couple issues). I was attached to them but wasn’t entirely a fan. Both Ash and Herbert always felt out of character. It was always a slog to read Army of Darkness comics from like the mid-2000s...

That all changed this year!

As a few of you may know, there’s a new Army of Darkness versus Reanimator comic series called Necronomicon Rising. The 3rd of 5 issues was just released on wednesday and I just scooped it up today (I had to special order it at my comic shop because its not important enough for most to order it normally).

Anyway, here’s the cover for Issue #3. I love it, honestly. hehe.

Anyway, I highly recommend reading Necronomicon Rising! Unlike the comic industry’s previous attempts at this crossover, this version actually feels like it is a passion project and not just a slapped together paycheck (in one of the original crossovers, Herbert was barely even in it). Both Ash and Herbert are in character. Ash isn’t written s a sleazy scumbag (unlike most other Army of Darkness comics) and Herbert’s just a grumpy little gremlin. I love them both.

So, yeah, go order these from your comic book store. Now.

For better quality, buy the physical issues. Seriously. If we support this, maybe they’ll give us more. Wouldn’t that be nice?

SO! Everyone has been dying to hear about my weekend and my experience meeting Robert! Here it is under the cut!

Friday we rolled up to the con on time, early check in, got a lot of recognition and pics in my Sailor Majora cosplay, including one person who got a pic from me at Anime North like five fucking years ago and remembered me, very cool! Didn’t do much shopping, hit a few panels and then at the hotel later we got pizza, drank a lot, played games, fucked till about three am and barely slept.

Saturday was THE day! The big day! My photo with Robert! I got up and in my full ANOES fit, the shirt, the hat, the vans collab shoes, the nails, extra as fuck, you know?

I was so nervous, I would think about the fact it was happening today and my stomach was so up and down. We did more shopping, a lot more, I got some cool stuff but soon it was time for me to break off and go to the photo. Now my photo was in the north building. I was in the south building and the escalators were shut down, I was stuck down there for around twenty minutes and started to freak out worrying about getting to the other building. I managed to squeeze out and booked it, I needed to be there early, I had to be, I had never done a photo at a con and finding the place was a hassle. After hitting the bathroom I am finally in the right direction when tragedy strikes. I was wearing a leather mini skirt that fully unzips in the back and it fucking broke open. Full fancy deep purple lingerie panties and cheeks on display. I held the zip closed and ran to the nearest bathroom which was five feet away. Thank God, I leaned into a corner and kept telling people I wasn’t in line and to go ahead as I fixed it. In the bathroom line was a staff member who pointed me in the right direction of the photos.

I fixed my skirt and ran off, hoping and praying to anyone and everyone that my skirt doesn’t break open in front of Robert fucking Englund. I got there and before the Robert shoot they were doing a duo one with Robert and Jaime Campbell Bower. The black curtain was so thin I could SEE them from my place in line, third by the way from how early I was. In between people Robert was talking Jamie’s ear off. I couldn’t hear what about but he was gesturing wildly and Jaime seemed very, very interested and was nodding along.

One thing I could hear if I listened hard enough was the metal clicking of the glove, yes THE glove, Robert was wearing. Finally it was time, we were ushered back, there was a table to drop shit you didn’t want in the picture, bag abandoned, I moved forward and watched as a few people ahead got theirs done. They are so fast, there is no time to even really say anything and I am stressed. I mean he is five fucking feet from me and I am dying.

It’s my turn.

I go up, I say, “Hi!” and he nods with a big smile. He wants me on the other side of him so without saying anything, he puts both hands on me, the man didn’t say shit to me before touching me! Talk about a dream. He moved me to his right, both hands on my biceps and I am sure the look on my face was priceless. He presses me to him and says, he doesn’t ask, not really, he TELLS me, “I’m gonna grab your hair, okay?” and then my high ponytail that is fed through the back of my springwood high baseball cap is in his gloved hand and he is pulling it up! I am dying.

I had no idea what to do with my hands. My heart is racing, I feel warm and just, thoughtless? Full of joy and totally thoughtless, smiling like a total idiot. The photo is taken, the photographer is fucking laughing, I assume from my expression and demeanor and like, my everything. They call out next and Robert told me, “Good job.”

He told me good fucking job and I was walking away, totally on air. I got my bag, I headed to pick up my photo and it was printed off and passed to me and I was still grinning staring down at it. I pre-paid to get it framed, I went to do so and the framing girl was saying something but I wasn’t listening, I literally can’t remember what she talked to me about.

I left with my freshly framed photo and headed to go meet up with my husband and friends. The whole walk from the north to the south building I was smiling so hard under my mask. I kept on thinking over and over, “He touched me. He pulled my hair. He told me good job. I met him. I got a photo with him-” over and over.

So happy.

I shopped more, I went back to the hotel, I told the tea to everyone cuz we got separated, had dinner and then went to the live podcast recording with Jay and Silent Bob.

Then today, Sunday, I had two missions. Get the photo signed, go to Robert’s panel and ask aquestion. After getting in my Amber fit and packing up the room and car for later we leave. Grab breakfast, show up at the con an hour after it opened. I go to Robert’s line immediately and I am greeted with a sign that says, “Robert Englund is closed for the day. Tickets only.”

After an hour his line was full for the fucking day. I missed my shot. They decided to pre-sell autographs, even tho they didn’t advertise it on the website that they made such a change so I missed it. I checked over and over if I could pre-buy but there was no option. So heart broken and dejected, I left and met up with the friends and Mr.Bex.

After some heavy retail therapy and some great finds I break to go get in line for the panel. I am fourth in line, I get in and park myself as close to the mic as I can.

He comes out and it starts and the guy with Robert takes a half hour of his time asking some questions then it was our turn. I ran and made it sixth in line because someone went for the mic before they officially said we could. I thought, sixth, I can totally fucking get my question in. I was going to ask if he had any cool stories or fun memories he wanted to share about working on Behind The Mask: The Rise Of Leslie Vernon.

We got two questions in, someone asked to cut and the person let them, and then this fuck, proceeds to ask THREE questions you could google. About if there was ever talk of a Freddy VS Jason two, which there was, which led to Robert talking about Freddy VS Jason VS Ash and then this fuck asking if Robert would ever play Freddy again, to which, as he always says, is a big fat no. He would like a cameo as a doctor if they ever remake Dream Warriors tho.

This fuck took so long, that they let there be one more question. I was so close. Two people away from asking. What a bummer. The panel was great, Robert was fun and again being in the same room and hearing him talk about his passion for his craft is so good.

After this the Joseph Quinn panel was happening and getting out of the con after that let out would be insane, so we left. Back to the car, hit the Wendy’s on airport road, came home and unpacked and here I am.

It was a great con, a great return, amazing new memories, great finds and true, while I didn’t get a signature, Robert didn’t see my tattoo because they rushed the photo’s so much, and I didn’t get to ask a question, it was a great weekend.

I miss it already. I can’t wait for next year!

I had fun, I still got my photo, Robert touched me, spoke to me, I shared time with him and that is so fucking speical and huge and makes every little negative thing more than worth it. I hope I can see him at a con in the future and THEN get the photo I took with him signed!

The overdress is all in one piece! And we have sleeves! With bonus screen accurate Rhaenyra ring!

Work has been extra weird this week, but weird in a way that's given me more time to iron and pin and sew than I usually have. So I was able to get through that long list of pressing tasks from my last post, and then pin the two front panels to the side panels (which are already sewn to the back panels), pin the back seams of the sleeves, and sew those four seams earlier today.

With those seams done, the sleeves are sleeve-shaped and the dress is basically dress-shaped. All of those new seams need pressed, and the sleeve seams will need to be hand-finished since the black silk organza is a bit itchy on its cut edges. There's just one more body seam left to sew for the dress, the center front seam, and then the little shoulder seams.

There's quite a lot of finishing to be done, both on the dress and the sleeves. In the above pic, the sleeve is just clamped closed at the underside of the wrist, and once it has its hooks-and-eyes it'll fit a lot more smoothly. And then there's all the seam finishing for the dress, hemming the neck and armscyes and skirt edge, and handsewing on all the trim and beading. Lots to do!

I've been working little by little on the handsewing for the seams finishes for the underdress, and then it will need all its hemming too. But when possible I've been trying to focus on the overdress, because if it came down to it, I would rather have the overdress done and leave the underdress somewhat unfinished. But today is exactly 15 weeks until I have to pack for Dragon Con, so I've still got time, and I'm hoping I can get everything finished to my liking in the time remaining.

Besides the dress itself, I still have a few things to do on the wig, and I've been tracking down the jewelry pieces one by one, and I may actually end up making one piece that I've been unable to find. I also want to make a little handbag to carry all my stuff at con, but that's definitely on the nice-to-have list.

Some days I feel like I'll be able to get through this whole project with time to spare, and other days I feel like I'm going to be working on it up until the very last moment, and maybe have to cut corners to get it done. Getting through this last portion of machine sewing and into all the extensive handsewing will hopefully give me a better idea of how long the whole thing will take.

But, of course, I'm already having Ideas™ about what other cosplays I could make for Dragon Con this year, if I do end up having time at the end of the summer. One of them would be pretty straightforward, and I could use the same pattern as this project with just a few modifications, and I already have at least most of the materials I would need to complete it. The other one is completely ridiculous, with tedious machine sewing and handsewing, but damn it would be fun.

Welp. I guess if I want to have any hope of finishing this cosplay and maybe one or two more after that, I should probably get back to it. My iron awaits!

not really much to say to be honest, it was a serviceable episode, I like the colours and the name cards they introduced, but other than that it didn't really do anything with chap 1. tho mashle gets way better later when it becomes a battle manga with a bit of deadpan comedy on the side, instead of just a paradoy of the magic school trope so we'll see how it goes then

man where do I even start, my "real" rating for it is 8 but this is what I actually gave it cause I had a blast reading it

it's everything I want from a battle series like this: - a colourful cast of characters that make you want to root for them - a concrete power system that is easy to understand but flexible enough to where it doesn't hinder the action - good art and easy to follow action scenes the story's important too but I ain't reading battle manga for that, tho even then the story wasn't bad, it was like a 7 but everything else elevates it which is where the 8 I said comes from, however I rate things for my own enjoyment and I loved it was actually debating between 9 or 10 but I liked the ending so yeah shame ayashimon didn't survive (tho from the start it wasn't as good as jigokuraku) but looking forward to Kaku's next work

the new series from the shokugeki duo is here! and the ghost is a...guy?? what the hell. I guess it's my fault for making assumptions from that one tiny pic we had of it but still anyway, it was actually pretty good, I don't feel it was as impactful as shokugeki's debut, but it was pretty good, the art is better than ever since saeki has had years to refine it and the story is seems interesting enough, here's hoping it does well in ratings and doesn't get axed too soon, jp readers got some questionable taste

Progress Report #9 – Registration closing

KiScon 2022 is upon us! In 48 hours the first panel will kick off a weekend of fun and excitement! This is the last newsletter before the convention.

1. Last Call for Registration:

We've sent out the Con Book (a 62 pages long program booklet with tons of tech info, the schedule, the auction catalogue, details on the art show, and more) to all registered attendees by email yesterday. If you are a member but have not received this message, please check your spam folder or let us know immediately. We would not want you to miss out on important info for the convention.

You can also view and download the final schedule (pdf) here. In order to be admitted to the Zoom panels and vid shows linked on the schedule, you need to be a registered attendee!

Rules for the competition:

One entry per person. So don’t post pics in the channel of five different cosplays you made, but focus on one. If this were an in-person con, you could only wear one costume at a time too. Feel free to show up in various cosplays all throughout the weekend, but for the competition only one will count. Your cosplay can be sewn by yourself, tailor-made, or bought – the important point is how you transform into the character of your choice. It must be a costume of sorts; Trek T-shirts do not count for this competition. (But we love to see them during other Zoom panels.)

If you post pics or videos of your cosplay instead of presenting it live on Zoom, please only submit recent pics ( = from 2022). While we all love the Horta costume or Spock’s space suit you wore to a con in 2010, it would not be eligible for the competition in 2022.

We will determine the winners (1st, 2nd, and 3rd place) at the end of the session via Zoom poll.

4. The Very Last Call: Cake? Cake? I can haz cake? We have only received one entry for the cake contest so far. And while this one is a most gorgeous cake, we are hungry for more. We still accept last-minute entries for our (cup)cake contest! Should a sudden craving for cake happen today or tomorrow, turn it into art by decorating the cake in K/S style and send us pics: cakecontest @ kiscon . org This contest is meant to be fun, and we do not expect anyone to become a pâtissier for it. Do something wild and wacky with buttercream! Write something on a plain cake that Kirk would write for Spock! Make it all about colours and symbols! Or shape marzipan dicks and put them on a store-bought cupcake. It's a win-win situation: you make us laugh or go awwww! while also having an excuse to indulge in a sweet delight. 5. Last but not least, technology: In preparation for the convention, please make sure that your Zoom app is up-to-date, and that your mic and camera are working as they should. Check whether you can log into your Conline account and have a look at your profile there: is your timezone set up correctly? Are you using the correct (fannish) name on Conline? The schedule on Conline is displayed in our main con time = Eastern / New York, but you can click on any of the times and a little box will appear next to it to tell you what time that is in your timezone. Another day, another post. I am on a roll! Shall we?

I didn’t read the book from last time today, so I’ll be gushing about my favorite Webtoon Nevermore and Edgar Allan Poe (I swear they’re related). My profile pic is a screen grab of one of the main characters, Lenore. Just in case you were curious. I think it’s pretty.

Nevermore is a gothic romance set in a boarding school for those who have died. If you do well enough at Nevermore Academy (the name of the boarding school) and get enough merits, you get a second chance at life. Only one person is going to get that chance, however. Everyone else goes to the Land of the Dead. And, no one remembers who they were when they were alive. Once you start to remember, however, you have the potential to unlock a Spectre, which is basically a ghost that has powers. Students use the Spectres as a leg-up within the school. Simple enough of a premise, until you consider the characters involved. Enter Lenore and Annabel, two students who meet during the first episode. It’s very clear that they care for each other, for reasons that elude them until they start remembering who they were in life. The extent of their relationship while alive is still a mystery, but there is plenty of room for speculation. The subtext (and just the text in general) however, is clear: they were definitely close. Still, only one person can leave.

Thus begins the game the two must play. Annabel will keep the other students and the deans of the academy distracted so that they won’t target her or Lenore, while Lenore must find another exit out of Nevermore Academy. The problem is, while Annabel is great at games and plays them well, Lenore has mixed feelings about leaving the friends she has made while at the academy to lose themselves in the Land of the Dead. It’s made worse when the reader (and Lenore) is made aware that Annabel doesn’t really care about anyone else except her and Lenore and the life she believes they were unjustly taken from. This begs the question as to how exactly they died.

We know Annabel died on her wedding day because of her Spectre being the Lady in White, a woman betrayed on her wedding day. But betrayed by who? And why? We haven’t met Lenore’s Spectre, but we can assume they died around the same time based on their arrival at Nevermore Academy. So how did Lenore die? So many questions! I like mysteries though, so I love it.

The comic is kind of infuriating because it’s a brain worm. I swear I look forward to its Thursday night updates more than I look forward to Friday itself at this point. And it’s so pretty. I’ve already said this, but I can say it again, and again, and again. I’ll put some pictures on here too.

Okay, but how does Edgar Allan Poe fit in? Well, the comic is based on his poetry. There are a few excerpts from some of his work sprinkled throughout the panels. It’s caused me to read some of his works as well. It’s so delightfully morbid. I’ll put my favorite one below.
