Since Riordan attended the Eras Tour let's talk about pjo swiftie characters (according to me ofc)
Annabeth= you can't convince she isn't a swiftie i know she is, but not many people know cause she thinks it's lowkey embarassing to be into Taylor, but she's totally a Speak now, 1989 stan she was screaming "Better than revenge" every day and every night when Rachel was into the picture, also she totally made Percy listen to "You are in love" cause it reminds her of them. Also also "New Romantics" is her anthem. She also loves "This is why we can't have nice things" cause it remindes her of Luke. I could actually go on forever but i'm gonna stop here now
Piper = duh of course she is, she is a Lover and Red girly, confused, romantic, hopeful in true love even after being hurt, she's on the "Paper Rings", "Me", "Lover" the song, "The Man" "I think he knows" ecc side of Lover and on the "The moment i knew", "Begin again", "Everything has changed", "The lucky one" "Stay, stay, stay" side of Red
Frank= i know in my heart, soul and mind he's a swiftie too, he actually takes Hazel to Taylor's concerts and randomly sends her Taylor's songs that reminds him of Hazel, he's the kind of guy who proposes during "Love story" cause lowkey is an hopless romantic. He was screaming crying every liryc of "You belong with me" at night in the Argo II when he thought Leo had a thing for Hazel. He gifted Midnights to Hazel cause the album is so her according to him. To me he is a Speak now girlie
Will= he's one of the biggest swifties at chb, there's literally nothing you can say to convince me otherwise. He's into her country albums more but actually lover all of her music, Taylor is his comfort singer (besides his mom of course) he's a Fearless girly and listens to "Fearless" the song, during long operations cause it helps him, "Hey Stephen" makes him think of Nico as well as "New year's day" cause he's a simp and "Dancing with our hands tied" cause that's literally his pov in Tartarus, idc, and of course "The best day" makes him think of his mom. "Change" and "Jump then fall" are some of his favorite Taylor's songs ever. I know my boy cries to "Mirrorball" and "This is me trying". You can't tell me he didn't sing "Our song" to Nico at least once
Percy,Hazel and Nico are Taylor enthusiasts, not quite fans but their s.o introduced them to her so now they appreciate Taylor too
Percy= he's a 1989 girlie, he loves "Welcome to New York" and thinks "Bad blood" is one of her best songs ever. After Annabeth made him listen to "YAIL" he fell in love wih it and it's now their song, he screams to "Haunted" when he feels disappointed by his father or by the Gods in general. He loves "The great war" too cause it reminds him of Annabeth as well as "Mine". And he loves "Long live" cause it just fits him and his story
Hazel= she's into Midnights (not only cause Frank gifted it to her, even tho that definetly made the album gain some extra points) "Bejeweled" and "Karma" are some of her favorite songs of the whole album but she cried the first time she listened to "You're on your own kid" so it has a special place on her heart. She dedicated "Lavander Haze" and "Sweet nothings" to Frank and it made him a bit emotional. Also she loves "Paris" cause she has taste. She absolutely adores "The outside" and the Debut album in general
Nico= i know what you're thinking hes a Reputation supporter but i actually see him more as a Folklore/Evermore girlie and a Lover one too, unlike Piper he's more on "The archer", "Cruel summer", "It's nice to have a friend" and "Soon you'll get better" side of Lover cause u know my boy is a little bit of a mess, and of course he loves "Daylight", "Cornelia street" (actually this song is his religion we know he has low self esteem) and "Aterglow" cause they make him think of Will. He thinks "No body, no crime" is probably Taylor best dark bop and obviously he loves "Gold rush" but i think he relates it back to his old crush on Percy, "Evermore" the song, is one of his favorite on the whole album, as well as "Long story short". I know Nico secretely cries to "Tolerate it". He dedicated "Invisible string" to Will (actually if you read TSATS without being a fucking hater, you'll know this is lowkey, very lowkey tho, canon) he loves "Peace" and "The Lakes" cause he relates to them deeply. I still think he loves Rep too like "Look what you made me do" it's totally his jam "I did something bad" is his go to song when he wants to be in a good mood and of course "Gorgeous"and "Delicate" cause he's secretely a romantic and down bad for his boyfriend.
If you don't know Taylor this won't make sense but if you have time and want new music give those songs a go, cause they're really good trust me u will not regret it
Just few lyrics to some of the songs to let u know what i'm talking about
BETTER THAN REVENGE= The story starts when it was hot and it was summer and, I had it all I had him right there where I wanted him she came along, got him alone, and let's hear the applause she took him faster than you could say sabotage
YAIL= One night he wakes strange look on his face pauses, then says you're my best friend and you knew what it was he is in love
NEW ROMANTICS= We're so young but we're on the road to ruin we play dumb but we know exactly what we're doing we cry tears of mascara in the bathroom honey, life is just a classroom
TIWWCHNT= It was so nice being friends again there I was giving you a second chance but you stabbed me in the back while shaking my hand
THE MAN= I'm so sick of running as fast as I can wondering if I'd get there quicker if I was a man and I'm so sick of them coming at me again cause if I was a man then I'd be the man
TLO= And they tell you that you're lucky, but you're so confused cause you don't feel pretty, you just feel used
YBWM= I remember you driving to my house in the middle of the night i'm the one who makes you laugh when you know you're 'bout to cry and I know your favorite songs and you tell me about your dreams think I know where you belong think I know it's with me
FEARLESS= And I don't know how it gets better than this you take my hand and drag me head first fearless and I don't know why but with you I'd dance in a storm in my best dress
HEY STEPHEN= Hey Stephen, i know looks can be deceiving but i know i saw a light in you [...] cause i can't help it if you look like an angel can't help it if I wanna kiss you in the rain, so come feel this magic i've been feeling since I met you
DWOHT= I loved you in spite of deep fears that the world would divide us so, baby, can we dance through an avalanche? And say, say that we got it i'm a mess, but i'm the mess that you wanted
MIRRORBALL= I'm still a believer but I don't know why i've never been a natural all I do is try, try, try
TIMT= They told me all of my cages were mental so I got wasted like all my potential and my words shoot to kill when I'm mad i have a lot of regrets about that i was so ahead of the curve, the curve became a sphere fell behind on my classmates, and I ended up here
Bad Blood= Now we got problems and I don't think we can solve 'em you made a really deep cut and baby, now we got bad blood
TGW= We can plant a memory garden say a solemn prayer, place a poppy in my hair there's no morning glory, it was war, it wasn't fair and we will never go back to that bloodshed, crimson clover the worst was over my hand was the one you reached for all throughout the Great War
BEJEWELED= Best believe I'm still bejeweled when I walk in the room i can still make the whole place shimmer
KARMA= Ask me what I learned from all those years ask me what I earned from all those tears ask me why so many fade, but I'm still here
YOYOK= Everything you lose is a step you take so make the friendship bracelets take the moment and taste it you've got no reason to be afraid you're on your own, kid yeah, you can face this you're on your own, kid you always have been
THE OUTSIDE= I've been a lot of lonely places i've never been on the outside
THE ARCHER= Who could ever leave me, darling? But who could stay? Dark side, I search for your dark side but what if I'm alright, right, right, right here? And I cut off my nose just to spite my face then I hate my reflection for years and years
CORNELIA STREET= And I hope I never lose you, hope it never ends id never walk Cornelia Street again that's the kind of heartbreak time could never mend
AFTERGLOW= I blew things out of proportion, now you're blue put you in jail for something you didn't do i pinned your hands behind your back, thought I had reason to attack, but no [...] Sorry that I hurt you i don't wanna do, I don't wanna do this to you i don't wanna lose, i don't wanna lose this with you
TOLERATE IT= I wait by the door like I'm just a kid use my best colors for your portrait lay the table with the fancy shit and watch you tolerate it if it's all in my head tell me now tell me I've got it wrong somehow i know my love should be celebrated but you tolerate it
INVISIBLE STRING= Time, mystical time cutting me open, then healing me fine were there clues I didn't see? And isn't it just so pretty to think all along there was some invisible string tying you to me
PEACE= All these people think love's for show but I would die for you in secret the devil's in the details, but you got a friend in me would it be enough if I could never give you peace?
LWYMMD= But I got smarter, I got harder in the nick of time honey, I rose up from the dead, I do it all the time i got a list of names, and yours is in red, underlined

INCREDIBLE, hard agree on all points. I’ve had Church on my tlt playlist from the get-go but always thought of it as a Harrow song so now I need to re-experience it as a John bop. I’m a semi-ironic 3OH!3 fan (unfortunately) but never considered it for tlt… Now that you’ve opened my eyes though, Love 2012 is absolutely my newly-minted-cult-leader!John anthem, especially the lines “flash flash television, give me your new religion” and “cha-ching for your soul, everything must go, kiss kiss on the lips of the apocalypse” which like. C’mon.
oh love it as a harrow song too. i think you've got to funnel the 3OH!3s and adjacent into tlt mix. it is the meme energy a mix deserves. you now can't convince me that john & co (puppeted bodies very much included) didn't all do the fucking cha cha slide one of these cappuccino tuesdays. you're selling me on love 2012 and this whole thing has exposed me to the fact that 3OH!3 is still, inexplicably, making music and so i'm just going to guess, from vibes alone, vampire's diet is relevant here too.

This year may have been another tough one for many of us but there is no doubt some incredible music has come out of that. Here I have shortlisted my personal Top 50 songs of the year for you to enjoy!
Every year it is so difficult to pick just 50 songs from all the phenomenal music being released and believe me, there were so many more songs and artists that I love that deserve to be on this list. This is a playlist of songs that I’ve connected with on lots of different levels and for different reasons which I have attempted to explain as best I can! Some you may agree with and some you may not, but that’s the beautiful thing about music.
I really hope that you can connect to some of these songs too, and/or discover your new favourite artist/band. That’s what we are all about here at She Makes Music. Happy New Year and we’ll see you in 2022! - Helen Evans, Founder/Editor
Kaleena Zanders - 'SET ME OFF'
Explosive and captivating singer, songwriter and producer Kaleena Zanders first came to our attention at the very beginning of the year with her powerful single 'SET ME OFF'. I was instantly hooked and the song was our first Track of the Week for 2021. I see a very bright future for this talented artist!
youtube
Baby Queen - 'Raw Thoughts'
Now, many may consider 2021 to be the year of Olivia Rodrigo (which is 100% a fair accolade!) but for me personally, this was the year of Baby Queen. Every single song this singer has released since her debut 'Internet Religion' last year has been an absolute banger. The soaring 'Raw Thoughts' is my favourite (only by a millimetre!). She is such a refreshing, candid and cool af artist. If Baby Queen isn't on your radar, then she needs to be..stat.
youtube
Griff - 'Black Hole'
Even though she has been on our radar since her Mirror Talk EP, I just knew Griff would steadily be on the rise this year after her 2020 Christmas single 'Love Is A Compass' and it all kicked off with the superb 'Black Hole'. This song is insanely catchy and the lyrics are so melodramatic, I love it.
youtube
Allie X - 'GLAM!'
Now, I know this isn't technically a brand new song (last year it was included on a physical limited edition double LP of Allie X's first two records, CollXtion I and CollXtion II, which included previously unreleased demos and leaks from that time period - and 'GLAM!' was one of those) but Allie X released 'GLAM!' for the first time on streaming platforms this year and so for me, it definitely counts. I absolutely adore this song for so many reasons. It is a proper sing-at-the-top-of-your-lungs-into-your-hairbrush kind of pop banger.
ALLIE X · GLAM!
sad alex - 'dating myself'
sad alex is another pop singer-songwriter that has been on the rise this year, although still very underrated in my opinion! She released the fantastic 'dating myself' around Valentine's day this year as a celebration of single life and falling in love with yourself and it is a very empowering bop.
sad alex · dating myself
Glades - 'Dancing In Mirror'
And from one inspiring hit to another! 'Dancing In the Mirror' is the self-empowerment anthem from Aussie pop outfit Glades. These past two years have had so many people doubting and being unkind to themselves (myself included) so this song is a reminder to be kinder and to learn to love yourself. I can't help but dance in the mirror to this song!
GLADES · Dancing in the Mirror
Jetty Bones - 'Nothing'
Jetty Bones is another artist that we were introduced to this year and anyone that has followed the blog for a long time will know that I am a sucker for anything that sounds like it belongs in the '80s. Especially if it includes a killer sax solo. So this song, 'Nothing', was always going to be a hit with me and I hope you love it too!
youtube
Shungudzo - 'There's only so much a soul can take'
Shungudzo makes flipping off white supremacist patriarchy seem as refreshing as daily moisturiser on her vibrant track 'There's only so much a soul can take.' The Zimbabwean-American is equal parts activist and artist, making sure that her pop songs are energising and compelling. So many of us are currently suffering from varying systemic afflictions: stresses about health, money, all types of discrimination, pressures of social media etc and this is an anthem for us all. The song reeled me in hook line and sinker at that very first line: "People really piss me off.."
youtube
Sarah Harding - 'Wear It Like A Crown'
Girls Aloud star Sarah Harding very tragically passed away earlier this year from breast cancer. She was 39. So, so unbelievably heartbreaking. She gave us one, brilliant final gift though in releasing her solo song 'Wear It Like A Crown'. Again, not a brand new song, she recorded it a decade ago but this year was the first time fans have heard it. And it is a certified banger right from the outset.
MARINA - 'Purge The Poison'
MARINA is one of my absolute favourite lyricists. She's a pure wordsmith! I was so happy to have her back this year with Ancient Dreams in a Modern Land and 'Purge the Poison' is a masterpiece. Although she is considered pretty mainstream, I still don't think she gets the recognition she deserves. All hail Queen MARINA!
youtube
Wolf Alice - 'Smile'
I was ecstatic when Wolf Alice announced their new album Blue Weekend and I couldn't wait to hear it. And it did not disappoint. Definitely one of the records of the year. The band just keep getting better and better. They should be headlining every single festival from here on out. 'Smile' is my favourite song on the album, it gives me feels I can't even explain.
youtube
Laura Mvula - 'Got Me'
Laura Mvula went 80s and I am so here for it! This is a sound that suits her so well, I love it. 'Got Me' also has everything I want in a song. Loving the Bad-era MJ vibes. It's slick, infectious and you just have to dance to it. It was always going to be one of my favourite songs this year.
youtube
CHVRCHES feat. Robert Smith - 'How Not to Drown'
It's no secret that CHVRCHES are one of my favourite bands but you may not know that The Cure are also one of my favourite bands of all time. So having Robert Smith feature on 'How Not to Drown' is just an absolute dream come true for me. Another song that was always going to be on this list no matter what.
youtube
Lorde - 'Solar Power'
I really needed this song. I needed this song so very badly. I can actually feel the warmth of the sun shining down on me every time I listen to 'Solar Power'. Lorde never fails to deliver. I'm so happy she blessed us with her exquisite new album this year.
youtube
Maisie Peters - 'Psycho'
Maisie Peters is another fantastic British singer-songwriter that has gifted us a truly wonderful album in 2021, You Signed Up For This. An instant earworm, 'Psycho' is so insanely catchy and extremely relatable. I only see Maisie rising higher and higher into the stratosphere.
youtube
AURORA - 'Cure For Me'
AURORA's voice is my favourite of all time. I get chills every damn time I hear it. I could listen to her sing the phone book all day every day and would never grow tired of it. And she is such a special and pure human being. Her single 'Cure For Me' is so precious. I love the carnival-esque organ and the empowering lyrics. How anyone could not like AURORA is beyond me.
youtube
July Jones feat. Suzi Wu & GIRLI - 'Butterflies'
July Jones burst onto the scene this year with this incredible song 'Butterflies' featuring two of our faves, Suzi Wu and GIRLI. Edgy electro-pop that is unapologetically queer, 'Butterflies' comes straight from the heart and I love how unusual the chorus sounds, it's so unique. It's bad ass. Truly.
youtube
UPSAHL - 'Time of my Life'
UPSAHL is one of the greatest pop songwriters of this generation. Her debut album Lady Jesus is utterly brilliant from the first note to the last. 'Time of my Life' is my favourite song on the record. It's ridiculously relatable and undeniably catchy. She should be so much bigger than she is right now but there is plenty of time for her to take over the pop world.
youtube
Annie Chops - 'Level Up'
We discovered Germany's Annie Chops completely by accident this year and I couldn't be more grateful! 'Level Up' is so sassy, bold and energetic. I fell in love with the track instantaneously. Hoping to hear more from Annie in the future!
youtube
Charli XCX - 'Good Ones'
You can always guarantee a Charli XCX song to make my end of year list, providing she has released one of course! 'Good Ones' is Charli on absolute top form and the video is fire! I cannot wait for her new album next year. I have also been enjoying her Best Song Ever podcast which I highly recommend! Charli is a pop goddess and she deserves all the awards coming her way and more.
youtube
Fickle Friends - 'Love You to Death'
I have kept close tabs on Fickle Friends since the beginning and they always deliver solid gold pop bops. 'Love You to Death' is no different. It's so deliciously funky and I can't wait to get my teeth into their new album early next year. And hopefully get to see them live again!
Fickle Friends · Love You to Death
Dlina Volny - 'Tomorrow'
I have always been partial to a bit of darkwave/post punk and Dlina Volny are one of my favouite bands within the genre. The chord changes in 'Tomorrow' are just divine. I don't know how else to describe it. Whenever I hear the song I can just picture myself walking around Minsk on an icy winter's day. Bliss.
youtube
Near Tears - 'Love Under Surveillance'
Blending ’80s-set pop sounds with eerie modern dating rituals and technologies, ‘Love Under Surveillance’ by Near Tears is a refreshing take on falling in love over the internet. Extremely relatable for this generation! This song has massive sing-a-long energy, I love it so much.
youtube
Avril Lavigne - 'Bite Me'
Another artist that made a huge comeback this year is pop punk princess Avril Lavigne. I get transported back in time when I hear 'Bite Me', it's so nostalgic but also really fresh. It's difficult to explain. And having Travis Barker on drums is the icing on the cake for me. The girl is back on top!
youtube
Little Simz - 'Introvert'
Little Simz is one of the best rappers in the world right now. Not just in the UK, or the best 'female' rapper..one of THE BEST RAPPERS. Period. I thought that GREY Area would be hard for Little Simz to top but she's gone and done it with Sometimes I Might Be Introvert. 'Introvert' is a masterpiece and Little Simz should be headlining festivals all over the world.
youtube
Wet Leg - 'Chaise Longue'
Wet Leg have undoubtedly been THE buzziest band of 2021. The Isle Of Wight duo's tongue in cheek humor thrives on hypnotic debut single, 'Chaise Longue.' It is honestly one of the greatest debut singles in a very long time and I am hyped for the album next year. The band seem like so much fun, I would love to see them live. Here's hoping I can make that happen in 2022!
youtube
Remi Wolf - 'Quiet On Set'
I literally cannot stop myself from bopping along to Remi Wolf's music. She has released some corkers this year and 'Quiet On Set' is just bonkers, I love it! Juno is a brilliant debut album, one of my favourites this year and I can't wait to see what Remi does next!
youtube
Halsey - 'I am not a woman, I'm a god'
Halsey and Trent Reznor is a match made in heaven. If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power is such an iconic record for so many reasons. The production on 'I am not a woman, I'm a god' is flawless. It gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. It's a modern classic for sure.
youtube
Xenia Rubinos - 'Cogelo Sauave'
Xenia Rubinos is another artist that I think is totally overlooked. She's incredible! I can't even tell you why I love this song so much, I just do. The beat, the sounds she makes with only her voice, it's all amazing. I also have a deep affinity for the artwork. I had a fibreoptic flower lamp just like that when I was younger (I think I might still have it somewhere!) so it makes me feel very warm and fuzzy inside.
youtube
Magdalena Bay - 'Chaeri'
I have been a huge Magdalena Bay fan since the beginning and I can't tell you how excited I was when they announced their debut album. Mercurial World is everything I thought it would be and more. 'Chaeri' is just a perfect song, a massive club banger, very Robyn. And it's very relatable.
youtube
Sleigh Bells - 'Locust Laced'
The energetic and intense duo that is Sleigh Bells are back and better than ever! One of the best bands I've ever seen live. Texis is the band on absolute top form and 'Locust Laced' was the best way to introduce the LP. It's classic Sleigh Bells with it's cranked-to-11 guitar riffs and blown-out electronic percussion raging beneath Alexis Krauss’ sugar-rush vocals as she belts, “I feel like dynamite/I feel like dying tonight!” Superb.
youtube
AJA - 'Red Button'
AJA is a very, very talented 17 year old pop star out of Toronto. 'Red Button' is a punchy, empowering track about declining the calls of someone that has broken your heart. A feeling I'm sure we've all been able to relate to at some point or another in our lives! I love how the song flows and it's a great tune to sing along to. AJA will be one to watch in 2022 for sure!
youtube
Slayyyter - 'Cowboys'
Another highly anticipated album released this year was Slayyyter's Troubled Paradise. I love how she can create big budget-sounding pop but completely DIY. It can be done folks! ‘Cowboys’ is a different style to the type of pop fans have come to known the LA-based singer for. Instead of the glitchy hyperpop of her other recent releases, ‘Cowboys’ sees her sing over a fuzzy guitar riff in a style more akin to noise pop stalwarts Sleigh Bells or Charli XCX‘s earlier work (both of which you already know, I am a huge, huge fan of!).
youtube
All Ears Avow - 'Be That Nothing'
Swindon based quartet All Ears Avow are another great band we discovered this year. 'Be That Nothing' is one of those songs that I fell in love with instantly. Written by the band during the first COVID lockdown, ‘Be That Nothing' explores the grim reality we were all forced to face, but it's also a celebration of how, within the constraints of the pandemic, we all had to discover new ways to find excitement and get that stress release. Many of us discovered truths about ourselves that we had never known before and were compelled to confront them.
youtube
MØ - 'Live To Survive'
MØ is another SMM favourite. The Danish legend consistently drops banger after banger. I'm excited for Motordrome next year. 'Live to Survive' is a europhic track about pulling yourself through a shitty time and coming back stronger on the other side. Another song I definitely needed to hear this year!
youtube
Maddie Ross - 'Ears Bunny'
LA's Maddie Ross is a CRIMINALLY underrated artist in my humble opinion. The post-breakup, riff-heavy ‘Ears Bunny' starts as a minimal—albeit cheeky—synth-pop number which then erupts into a guitar-heavy chorus with Ross’ vocal delivery landing somewhere between the recent vengeful output of illuminati hotties and dollar sign–era Kesha. It's a killer track.
youtube
Iris Gold - 'Girl Pick Up Your Drum'
Iris Gold has been on our radar for many years now but it's since the release of 'Girl Pick Up Your Drum' that she has really caught our attention. Iris Gold teamed up with Eurythmics' Dave Stewart on the uplifting single. Over the lush guitar riffs, punchy drum grooves, Gold bares it all and pours her inner strength on wax as she breaks free from societal norms that have long restricted women. With her distinctive commanding vocals, she declares her independence with zeal and encourages her sisters to do the same and pick up the proverbial drum of strength.
youtube
Dead Sara - 'Hypnotic'
Alt rockers Dead Sara are, I feel, another extremely underrated band. The boot stomping anthem 'Hypnotic', from their excellent new album Ain't It Tragic, drips with swagger as frontwoman Emily Armstrong admits to being self-conscious, but says screw it, she knows she’s “a goddess.” The boastful confidence mixed with self-deprecation makes it a fun, yet honest song and I can't get enough of it!
youtube
Willow Kayne - 'Two Seater'
Taking cues from hip hop culture and '90s pop, London's Willow Kayne burst onto the scene this year with her major-label debut 'Two Seater'. Kayne takes us on a rollercoaster ride through mesmerising rapped verses before revealing her softer side with a soothing hook. It's an undeniable bop and I can't wait to hear more from Willow in 2022!
youtube
BXB LOVE - 'IGNORANCE SONG'
BXB LOVE, whose real name is Natasha Pheko, previously performed under the moniker Phé. Where her previous project had a more smooth and sensual sound, BXB LOVE has a more aggresive, industrial pop rock vibe and I am so here for it.  'IGNORANCE SONG' is a fresh, exhilarating and curious track of self-discovery which reflects the music BXB LOVE wants to be making and I can't wait to hear more and see what she does next.
youtube
Marian Hill - 'omg'
We have been champions of the fabulous Philly duo Marian Hill since the very beginning and they are still churning out hit after hit. They have released a few excellent singles this year but 'omg' is the stand out track for me. Samantha Gongol’s confidence immediately shines through with her vocals and lyrics on 'omg'. She sings “don’t need you so don’t get defensive” in such an airy and nonchalant way that makes her audience experience the same kind of self-assurance. It's a slinky, sexy number that I can't get enough of!
youtube
Blu DeTiger - 'Vintage'
Bass player extroadinaire Blu DeTiger throws it back to the 80's with her funky indie pop song 'Vintage'. Her claim, “I’m a vintage girl” covers her personality and her musical style; it’s what makes her stick out from other pop artists. And that bass line is just to die for. Never ever could resist a funky bass line.
youtube
Jenevieve - 'Résumé'
Jenevieve's debut album Division is glorious. I've kept a close eye on her ever since I heard the brilliant 'Baby Powder' last year. She bemoans being on her former flame’s romantic CV on the smooth album stand out ‘Résumé’ and boy, is it an addictive track. Jenevieve is poised to be the next big thing in R&B. Mark my words!
youtube
Charlotte Cornfield - 'Partner in Crime'
Canadian singer-songwriter Charlotte Cornfield released her new album Highs in the Minuses this year and there is something about the track 'Partner in Crime' that I adore but can't quite put my finger on. It's not normally a song I would be drawn to but I love the lyrics, the plodding beat of the song and the chord changes. Not to mention the brilliant Wes Anderson Bottle Rocket-inspired video.
youtube
Amyl and the Sniffers - 'Hertz'
Amyl and the Sniffers are another band that just keep on getting better and better. The Aussie punks' excellent album Comfort to Me was released this year and I think it's a record I will always turn to when I want to hear something raw and primal. 'Hertz' is a ripper of a track about the frustration of being stuck in one place. The perfect escapist anthem.
youtube
MUNA feat. Phoebe Bridgers - 'Silk Chiffon'
MUNA and Phoebe Bridgers. Another match made in heaven. 'Silk Chiffon' is THE queer anthem of the year. Between swooning acoustic and gilded guitar riffs Katie Gavin lets loose her crystalline vocals, singing about the kind of exuberant and intoxicating feeling that makes you feel weak at the knees when your crush is near. I love the 'Teenage Dirtbag' vibes of this track.
youtube
Poppy Ajudha - 'Change Your Mind'
Poppy Ajudha epitomises the uniquely diverse musical culture that exists in London. With her singular blend of R&B, soul and pop, she is unafraid to stand up for what she believes in. Her lyrics speak of feminism, colonialism, gender politics, current social issues and more. 'Change Your Mind' is a poignant song which sees Poppy imploring a male friend to see things from a woman's perspective. It's a truly beautiful track and has me welling up every time I listen to it.
youtube
Noa Kirel - 'Bad Little Thing'
I just love Noa Kirel’s unapologetic confidence, and her single, ‘Bad Little Thing,’ is the perfect example of that. Touching on her beauty, wealth, and success, the lyrics let her boast about everything she’s proud of over a fun sax-tinged instrumental (you know I love that sax!) It's catchy, it's fun, it's bold, it's a pop stunner.
youtube
Isabella Manfredi - 'Jealousy'
I was gutted when The Preatures announced their break up this year but only a day later, frontwoman Isabella Manfredi released her incredible debut solo single 'Jealousy' and I was no longer sad because it is a BOP and it makes me very excited for her solo album. 'Jealousy' is highly relatable for me and that slap and pop bass makes me swoon every time.
youtube
LØLØ - 'die without u'
LØLØ has been making waves this year with her brand of vibrant alt-pop. She is an artist that blows me away time and time again with her honesty in her music. She's a brilliant lyricist and I have loved every single song she released this year. 'die without u' is the track I connect with most being about that love-hate relationship you can sometimes have with a partner!

Thoughts on evermore ( track by track )
Willow is the best song on the album to get a music video because it’s the only one with any kind of radio  play. It’s a bop!! Also I COME BACK STRONGER THAN A 90′S TREND
Champagne Problems on my first listen, I thought it was about a young queer couple who got outed before they were ready and broke up because of it but apparently it’s about a man who was going to propose and she dumps him. I like my story better tbh
Gold Rush is interesting because she uses the term “ gold “ to describe her relationship and this song is a break up song!!  Also the song is unique because it sounds nothing like the rest of the album.
Tis The Damn Season is one of my favorite songs on the album because it reminds me of Happiest Season and it feels relatable like The 1. Also IT”S A CHRISTMAS SONG AND IT”S GOING ON MY CHRISTMAS PLAYLIST!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tolerate It is again interesting because there’s nothing more heartbreaking then seeing someone that you adore just literally tolerate you. Side note: the song falls into that weird category of music where people compare their love to religion.
No Body, No Crime is everything I’ve ever wanted. I despise how people think that James deserves forgiveness when he knowingly cheated on Betty and everyone’s like “ he’s a child!! he didn’t know!! “ and it’s how you know that a man wrote it. Well Taylor came back with a Goodbye Earl/He Had It Coming song and it’s the proper ending tbh
Happiness. WHO HURT YOU!?!?!?!?!??!?!??! It’s the depressing sequel to Seven!!
Dorothea is kinda weird because I don’t know what to think of it. It reminds me of Me & Britney and I think it’s the prequel to Tis The Damn Season.
Coney Island is kinda forgettable tbh. I’m re-listening to the album and I can’t remember it at all!! It’s not bad but it feels like a b side compared to Exile
Ivy is a wlw anthem and I will stand by that until I die. Also I find that her saying “ goddamn “ is weird and unnatural.
Cowboy Like Me  is adorable. Also I remember thinking “ what if Taylor worked with Mumford & Sons on Folklore “ before she was seen at their studio, ( the swiftgron is me is SHAKING )
Long Story Short is the most upbeat song on the album and I’m in love with it
Marjorie is the best song on the album. The lyric video made me cry and I wanted to call my grandmother and made me of think my grandparents who I don’t remember/ have never met.
Closure is once interesting because again it falls into that category of WHO HURT YOU!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
Evermore is weird. I love the first line of it for no reason but I really dislike with The National starts singing because their harmonies don’t match!! It makes me appreciate Exile all the more!!!!!!!
Over all it’s a fine album but I prefer Folklore. I don’t even see Everlore to be a different album at all but all it’s full of the b sides that didn’t make it on Folklore, ( which isn’t the case! ). I will just put Evermore right next to Folklore on my top 5 favorite albums list

8 people i’d like to know better!
tagged by: @datmando [listen babe i ADORE you. mwah.]
favourite colours: the whole spectrum of green. literally all of it. olive green??? cool and earthy. deep emerald??? majestic. pastels??? calming and elegant. fluorescents and limes??? YES give me that fairly odd parents cosmo shit. the only possible exception would be chartreuse, which actually slaps as a colour, but i thought it was a shade of red/maroon for the longest time and i felt betrayed when i found out 😔
last song i listened to: f2020 - avenue beat. hella catchy, such a bop. definitely the anthem of the year. i also really respect that it was made as a meme, then released officially after everyone related to it a lil too hard LMAO
favourite musicians: hozier, logic, doja cat, arctic monkeys, george ezra, the lumineers, half●alive, amongst others. i’m also really into musical soundtracks! hamilton, beetlejuice, hadestown, etc. let me know what y’all listen to, i’d love to get some new beats ;)
last film i watched: the two popes. hella late, as usual, but i really, really liked it. the dialogue is ARTFUL and as someone who doesn’t consider a religion a large part of their life, it cast an interesting light on one’s relationship with god. also way funnier than i expected lmao
last tv show i watched: haikyuu. does anime count? anyway, they finally added seasons 2-4 to indian netflix, so i’m getting back into these volleyball boys 😤please please PLEASE come scream at me about weeb shit. i welcome it.
favourite original character: i’m assuming this means my own oc’s? hm well from the hospitality series, i gotta say vosca. she’s a feral, wholesome child and i love her. but from original fiction i develop for fun, there’s a girl called danishka that i really like. museum archivist by day, reluctant superhero by night, has a hopeless crush on both the neighbours next door. she’s kinda relatable but also Not A Good Role Model. the dream is to write something for that universe, but where is the motivation!!!!!! fuck if i know 😩
sweet, spicy, or savoury: sweet, ANY day.
sparkling water, tea, or coffee: out of preference, i gotta say tea. there are so many variations! from so many different countries/cultures! you can add cool stuff to it! but it’s kind of tradition in my household to have coffee together at least once a day, so that holds a special place in my heart, too. tbh as long as it’s sweet, and can be cold, i love it. sparkling water can suck my dick and rot in hell. why does it exist. what the fuck.
pets: none, unfortunately. but there’s a family of cats hanging around my apartment complex, and i respect their vibe. same with the frogs who show up after it rains, too. fat little bastards. they’re the best. i really wanted a tortoise as a kid, but the uv lighting and enclosure were more expensive than the critter himself, so we couldn’t :(
no pressure tags: @dartheldur @shadylightbearherring @wickedlyemma @abysshaven @corrupt-fvcker @theocatkov @jangofctts @beskar-boba

my favorite lover moments for six months of lover:
the pivotal moment where taylor literally forgets about the things and the people who made her write this is why we can’t have nice things and look what you made me do in i forgot that you existed!!! what a moment!!!
i love you, ain’t that the worst thing you’ve ever heard! hE LOOKS UP GRINNING LIKE A D E V I L ! ! !
when we all first heard lover and realized that taylor’s really in the best and most wonderful place in her relationship now and that she’s found a love that’s really something, not just the idea of something
what’s it like to brag about raking in dollars and getting BITCHES and MODELS and it’s all good if you’re bad and it’s okay if you’re mad if i was out flashing my dollars i’d be a BITCH not a BALLER they’d paint me out to be bad so it’s okay that i’m mad!!!
the amount of raw vulnerability in the archer that speaks so poignantly to my anxiety and the way i constantly question and criticize and antagonize myself every moment
the way taylor knows exactly what she wants and makes it known in i think he knows 👀
the political implications of miss americana and the heartbreak prince...the political implications...american stories burning before me...american glory faded before me...
kiss me once cause you know i had a long night!!! kiss me twice cause it’s gonna be alright!!! three times cause i waited my whole life!!! ONE TWO ONE TWO THREE FOUR I LIKE SHINY THINGS BUT I’D MARRY YOU WITH PAPER RINGS UH HUH THAT’S RIGHT DARLINGGGGG YOU’RE THE ONE I WANT!!! (also the key change bc wow what a moment)
i could go on and on about cornelia street forever but essentially my favorite thing is that it’s a quintessential taylor swift song with lyrics that perfectly capture the emotions, smells, sounds, sights, and exact moments that are associated with the song. you can get the feeling of bittersweet and lonesome heartache and vulnerability from every second of the song. also the bridge. the. bridge.
can we please discuss how taylor said she doesn’t need to be going through a breakup to write an epic breakup song because wow death by a thousand cuts really gets those feelings down perfectly!!! and it’s all inspired by a movie!!! the versatility!!! and we went to town with bridge city on this song!!! our SONGS our FILMS united we STAND our COUNTRY guess it was a LAWLESS LAND...wow points were made...
the way the bridge of london boy meshes back into the final chorus so perfectly and how the whole song makes you wanna get up and dance the night away...what a timeless bop!
i can’t even listen to soon you’ll get better without breaking down but the bravery taylor exhibited into letting that heartbreaking song out into the world and being so open with her family’s struggles.
i’m new york city!!! yes ma’am you are!!! religion’s in your lips 🥵 the altar is my hips 🥵
shade never made anybody less GAY!!!
the amount of introspective reflection in afterglow is honestly insane and the way she sings the song sends me into a heavenly sunrise every single time. like the song perfectly captures waking up as the sun filters through your window and hits your back with warmth in the best way possible and looking over at your lover after a big fight the night before and eventually apologizing and cuddling into their arms as a way to assure yourself that this isn’t going to end you two.
rip hey kids spelling is fun 😔 but also the way me! represents such release of everything reputation meant to taylor and how it’s the self love anthem of the century!!!
the way it’s nice to have a friend has such simple yet meaningful lyricism and captures laying in a warm bed with a friend you had a sleepover with the night before on a haunting cold winter’s afternoon with dead, wet trees outside yet feeling so safe and loved inside because you finally have a friend perfectly.
the entirety of daylight. the absolutely breathtaking lyricism. everything it represents after reputation. it’s morning now...it’s brighter now. her soft vocals in the ending. the message at the end. you are what you love. how that’s a perfect way to end the long story that is the transition of reputation to lover.

My thoughts on the album
I forgot that you existed: perfect way to start the album, the laugh she does is literal music to my ears, that “so….yeah”
I think this song was so needed on the album to close the reputation era and open lover
Favorite line(s): “in my feelings more than Drake, so yeah” (peep the drake badge on the Entertainment cover)
Cruel summer: I think it’s about the start of. Her and Joe’s relationship when they were still sneaking around tottery and get to know each other more.
Favorite line(s): “Devil’s roll the dice, angels roll their eyes”. “I don’t wanna keep secrets just to keep you” “I love you, ain’t that the worst thing you ever heard”
The man: I had high hopes for this one and I must say, it’s a bad bitch anthem. It’s everything I wanted it to be and more.
Favourite line(s): “they wouldn’t shake their heads and question how much of this I deserve” “if I was flashing my dollars, id be a bitch not a baller”
I think he knows: FUCKING BOP! When the track-listist came out I thought this one would be about Taylor wondering if Joe knew just how much he means to her, and I gotta say I was not disappointed.
Favourite line(s): “its like I’m 17, nobody understands” “He’s obsessed with me and boy, I understand” “Lyrical smile, indigo eyes, hand on my thigh”
Miss Americana and the heartbreak prince: I really like the imagery of this song and the American culture references like homecoming and prom. I feel like this song is about her battered reputation of being ‘America’s sweetheart’ and how that fell once she began speaking her mind on politics.
Favourite line(s): “Now I'm feeling hopeless, ripped up my prom dress” “No cameras catch my pageant smile I counted days, I counted miles” “they whisper in the hallway she’s a bad, bad girl” “Voted most likely to run away with you”
Paper rings: before I first heard it I was expecting minimal production and soft vocals, but I really like that it didn’t go that way. The song is so cute and really shows the commitment between Joe and Taylor
Favourite line(s): “I like shiny thing but I’d marry you with paper rings” “I hate accidents except when we went from friends to this”
Cornelia street: Wildest dreams vibes, classic visual storyline. definitely one of my favourites because its so laid back while also putting so much out there “I rent a place on Cornelia street, I say casually in the car”
Death by a thousand cuts: I though this was gonna be a sad song so the intro kind of caught me off guard, but don’t let that fool you! This song is so deep but it masquerades behind the production, kind of like AYHTDWS.
Favourite line(s): “I see you everywhere, the only thing we share Is this small town” “but if the story’s over, why am I still writing pages?” “Paper cut stains my paper thin plans”
London Boy: is exactly what I imagined it to be. I love how the song shows her adaption to British culture and how she feels like she fits in there. (Also the voice recoding at the start lmao)
Favourite line(s): “But something happened, I heard him laughing, I saw the dimples first and then I heard the accent” “They say home is where the heart is, But that's not where mine lives” “
Soon you’ll get better: fucking ruined me. I cant even talk about it
Favorite line(s): “desperate people find faith” “You like the nicer nurses, you make the best of a bad deal, I just pretend it isn't real” “I'll paint the kitchen neon, I'll brighten up the sky”
False god: I really like the whole vibe of this track. It’s kind of like dress’s cousin
Favourite line(s): “But we might just get away with it, religions in your lips”
Afterglow: this song is so raw and I think it really shows the depth of her relationship
Favourite line(s):“Put you in jail for something you didn’t do” “fighting with a true love, is boxing with no gloves” “I lived like an island, punished you in silence”
It’s nice to have a friend: if you’re anything like me’s younger sister. I really like the line “rice on the ground looks like snow” because in my culture rice on the ground is part of a wedding ceremony (even though she probably didn’t mean it like that)
Favourite line(s): “sidewalk chalk, covered in snow” “lots my gloves, you give me one”
Daylight: this ties the whole album together nicely and was the perfect closing track.
Favourite line(s):“I don't wanna think of anything else now that I thought of you” “I wounded the good and trusted the wicked”

lover - first song ranking & thoughts
first of all i just need to say i legitimately don’t feel ‘meh’ about a single song on this album. on any other album. i always had one or two songs i was just kind of ‘take it or leave it’ about. but Lover really did that - they’re all amazing and wonderful. but here’s an attempt at an order of how much i love them!
18. it’s nice to have a friend
this really reminds me of you are in love in the way it recounts all the small gestures and steps involved in becoming close to somebody. it’s really cute and at the perfect space on the album, leading to daylight. not a mindblowing song or anything, but the vibe fits onto lover really well. i’m glad that it’s here
17. you need to calm down
yeah, i cooled down on this one a little bit. it’s fun and the message is important, but me! is the better single tbh. still though, the feeling of empowerment this gives me over my nonexistent online haters is wonderful. and i love the attitude of the song of just looking at the assholes who live their entire lives putting energy into hating people and just being like....why are you like this. it’s pathetic. calm the hell down. so needed in our current debate culture
16. me!
a real grower! taylor and brendon urie have such good chemistry, tbh that’s really the backbone of the song. it’s just a really nice carefree spring/summertime self love song, a perfect soundtrack for when you feel happy and content with yourself.
15. the man
just dropping the complete truth on us with this one. i’ve wanted taylor to make this song for years (and i know she said she’s been wanting to but just never found the right words!) the bridge really elevates this too. and it’s sad how relatable the entire song is in literally every aspect of professional (and personal) life for women. i don’t think it’s quite as strong as it could have been, but still really solid
14. i think he knows
this is like the fun version of dress. that’s all i got to say. just as explicit, but this time around it’s super cheeky and i love it. also goals of self confidence if i’ve ever seen them
13. paper rings
the joyful energy this has!! just makes you smile and want to dance immediately, a wonderful wholesome happy bop
12. false god
listen.....this is special. i absolutely think this is the most experimental song on the album, both in terms of the music (is that a saxophone in the bg?? it’s almost got a jazzy vibe? completely uncomparable to anything she’s ever done and still so distinctly Taylor), but also with the lyrics, where she goes into the love = religion theme which honestly....as a Florence + the Machine and Hozier fan, i don’t even need to go into how much of a vibe that is. I couldn’t have imagined it working so well for Taylor though, but honestly, this song feels perfectly brooding, summertimey, melancholy, - it’s almost like taking the darker underside of Cruel Summer and exploring it in depth! this is very much a song i need to be in a Specific Mood to really appreciate, but it’s damn well made
11. afterglow
i love the maturity of this. not just the apologizing for picking a fight, but explaining how it came to be - at the end, from a place deep seated anxiety. ‘it’s all me, in my head’ (those high notes are beautiful) you can really feel how sorry she is. at the same time, the song sounds like something bigger, like an anthem - almost like that place high above that she’s trying to elevate them to.
10. i forgot that you existed
SO MUCH FUN i keep repeating that but that’s just the mood of this album tbh, playful and mature at the same time. this song is just like, when you’re over someone but you just can’t help yourself and have to throw shade one last time before moving on. i love the bouncy beat!!
9. lover
this song is literally the feeling of ‘home’ in music. so cozy, comfortable, blissful. dreamy. perfect title track. also completely timeless - i think this is one of those songs that we will look back on in years as a classic in her catalogue, a song you will always want to play again
8. the archer
this was my definite favorite of the pre released songs. anxiety, doubts, the way they all just keep coming back and eating at you, it’s described so perfectly and painfully. and the production really makes it sound like you’re in a separate space from reality, just stuck in your head trying to find a way forward, to soothe yourself. the ‘they see right through me / i see right through me’ transition in the bridge is fantastic and keeps giving me chills. so much personal connection to this one
7. soon you’ll get better
feels weird to even rank this but......just wow. the harmonies with the dixie chicks are so beautiful, and the way the lyrics talk about the feeling between denial and desperate hope, the transition from “because you have to” to “because I have to” - I have to cling to this hope, or i won’t make i - it completely broke my heart. and the fact that Taylor can conjure all these complex emotions with just a guitar and a few words is incredible. i’m so so sorry for them and i wish all the best for Andrea with my entire heart.
6. london boy
i already see people underappreciating this, what is going on??? there are multiple cute bouncy joyful songs on this album but this is my favorite because it’s just got a fantastic flow and melody, and i love all of the references to places and dialect specific words and it’s just so wholesome?? but what really makes this is (once again) the bridge. stick with ME im your QUEEN like a tennessEE stella mccartNEY, just the energy!! the fun!! excuse me while i listen to this every day for the rest of my life
5. miss americana & the heartbreak prince
okay, taylor’s brain in this one. i made a post talking about how this song has three layers - at first there’s the high school setting, then it references the ‘cancelling’ of Taylor’s public persona, but then it can also be seen as a comment on US politics and the whole climate of society right now. and it’s all tied together perfectly because high school is the perfect metaphor for this!! she’s basically saying we’re all behaving like immature school children, bullying each other for the stupidest reasons, mob mentality, stupid contests, fabricated stories made up to tear people down, and the feeling of loneliness but also fear and horror that comes with all that for the people who are the victims of it.....it’s literally all like high school in the worst way. i just love this concept, and the melody and production give me a little bit of a reputation vibe almost? which is perfect for the song, the dark dramatic vibe shows the feeling of fear most of all and that’s just....too real.
4. death by a thousand cuts
........listen, i surely didn’t think that Taylor would write one of her best breakup songs in the year of our lord 2019, but here we are. it’s once again, the small moments she recounts. taking the long way home. the uncertainty if it will ever be fine again. and the bridge/second verse / whatever that part is but that entire part. ‘paper cuts from my paper thin plans’, excuse me. the fact that she wrote this about a movie where a couple breaks up after years really shows tbh, because it’s especially that kind of....not being able to find a part of yourself that isn’t influenced by the other person, that’s so horrible and makes moving on so painful. i also love the production which makes this sound so uptempo, contrasting the lyrics! idk the entire song just clicks into place for me
3. daylight
this is like a summary of the entire album (and with the reference to the past and especially red, it’s even connecting her entire discography together). it’s like the clean of this album, except this time around it feels more complex - all the subtle references to past mistakes, ghosts, that might not be so easy to wash away. i’ve already mentioned that i love about the album (and this song especially) how it doesn’t gloss over negative experiences but addresses them directly, like looking them in the eye and then saying ‘you don’t have the power to define me’. that’s what this song feels like - it’s not unabashedly celebratory, it’s actually quite melancholic, but also full of real healing, a feeling of peace and reconciliation. and the ‘i once believed love would be black and white / burning red, but it’s golden’.....excuse me.....how dare she
2. cornelia street
god, what a magical song. the kind of episodic buildup that Taylor excels at. the vibrancy of the production matching the vibrancy of the relationship as it develops, revolving around this one place in its multiple stages, and then the repeated, deep seated fear of losing all that. it’s just. ugh. what can i even say. and so so catchy. the “listen..” killed me. just like delicate, the vibe between fear and being drunk on happiness is so so well done.
1. cruel summer
oh yes. and here we have an absolute perfection of a pop song. incredible catchiness. smart, clever lyrics but also that underlying vibe of sadness and anxiety. seriously, the complexity this has?? and then that soaring bridge, the chaotic but beautiful but painful reality of all of it coming together. ‘i love you, ain’t that the worst thing you ever heard?’ idk this song just transcends everything for me friends. it’s like the vibe of out of the woods or maybe even style but the lyrics are even more sharp, they cut a little deeper, literally ‘summer’s a knife’. this is a song she only could’ve written influenced by reputation: there’s happiness but there’s that edge in it too. idk if anything i’m saying makes sense. i love this song so so so much.

Believe in The Image With Their New Single "Believe In Me"
Tumblr media
Mysterious. The only word to really describe The Image. Completely hidden head to toe, the duo set out to conquer one goal… deliver positivity. In 2019, they began that journey and hit the ground running. Most recently, they’ve been working as writers on the next Kanye album, but most importantly blessed us with a bop of a single entitled “Believe In Me”.
The gimmick is to not put a face to their music. It doesn’t matter what the color of your skin is, your religion, sexuality, gender, etc. All that matters is that you follow your passion and do what you love in life. That you not only follow that dream, but you conquer it. The duo spoke further on their latest single:
"When you’re a kid the possibilities are endless you could be or do anything. But slowly as you get older and join society the world attempts to put you in smaller and smaller boxes so that they can identify exactly the type of person you are. This video and song were about breaking those boundaries. Remembering what it’s like to still be a kid and see the world through a joy of endless opportunity"
The song is an anthem to the kids who feel like giving up, but need to believe in themselves. Because without believing in yourself, why should others believe in you? With the high energy production behind the song, it gives you a rush of adrenaline to be the best person you possibly can. The vocal production stood out most within the song. The vocals accompany the beat to perfection, creating an electric sensation while bumping the song. The Image has made their mark and we fully believe in them.

Now I See Daylight: Lover is Taylor Swift’s Brightest Glow-Up
Tumblr media
I wrote a ~2,000 word review of Lover. I’m so proud of you @taylorswift buddy, and as someone who majored in literature, I always like to close-read and write about the art I appreciate. and I love love lover, and I hope you’ll like my review (skip to the last paragraph if it’s too long hehe). <3 @taylornation   The musical event of my year transpired last night when Taylor Swift released her hotly anticipated 7th studio album, Lover. It’s Taylor’s 13th year in the game, my 11th year as a Swiftie, and we’ve both never been better. After dancing/crying/listening to Lover since last night, I’m finally ready to write my review of this triumphant, exuberant pop masterpiece.
It’s been a whirlwind past few months, from five holes in the fence to the star-studded, not-without-controversy YNTCD to the gorgeous title track that is “Lover.” As always, Taylor and her team have orchestrated a business-savvy album roll-out, complete with an elaborate, year-long, Easter Egg hunt. There is always much speculation about a Taylor Swift album, and a marketing campaign structured around clues is a smart way of creating the speculation, shifting listeners’ attention somewhere productive; in this case, re-watching the “ME!” music video over and over to catch all the eggs and amp up the video’s views. But to hear Lover in its entirety at the end of an Easter Egg journey is ultimately rewarding and intimate. “I am an architect, I’m drawing up the plans,” sings Taylor in “I Think He Knows.” The Lover era confirms her skills as a powerful architect; she builds speculation, constructs masterful bridges (she really went to “bridge city” with many songs on this album), and shows no signs of stopping.
The opening track, “I Forgot You Existed,” is an understated earworm that essentially bids the reputation era (and the Kimye drama of 2016) adieu. “It isn’t love, it isn’t hate, it’s just indifference,” Taylor shrugs. Vocally, the song has a colloquial quality; throughout, Taylor speaks, laughs, even trails off. It’s the equivalent of the throat-clearing that launched Track 1 of reputation, “Ready For It.” The first and essentially last song about “drama” on Lover, “I Forgot You Existed” clears the path for the 17 raw, emotional tracks to come.
The immediate next track, “Cruel Summer,” is an absolute pop-bop that immediately takes us to the higher register (Taylor in soprano-mode is sublime). It’s likely the next single (Tay teased the title in the YNTCD video and in a recent Amazon ad). This is the first song on the album that takes us to BRIDGE CITY—Tay practically screams “he looks up, grinning like a devil” in the bridge, and it’s amazing. We get to hear several New Taylor Sounds in this album, and it’s a lovely surprise each time. The trumpet(?) tease that opens “False God” and the way Tay sings “lo-o-o-o-ve” in the chorus prove that it’s all in the details. Structurally, the song staggers the lyrics in the chorus, such that each bleeds into the next (“Religion’s in your lips / Even if it’s a false god.” The religious imagery in Taylor’s past two albums is fascinating). Something similar happens, with even more syncopation (and brass!), in “It’s Nice to Have a Friend,” which is the grown-up, dreamier version of “Mary’s Song.” Speaking of the debut album, the way Taylor sings the bridge of “Cornelia Street” (“Barefoot in the kitchen…”) sounds just like the chorus of “Invisible.” Are these callbacks to her debut album coincidental? Knowing Taylor, likely not.
Indeed, many moments in Lover remind us that the old Taylor is far from dead, as she previously proclaimed in LWYMMD. "Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince” makes a direct reference to Tay’s song from the Hannah Montana movie (I looove “Crazier”), and in “Daylight” she sings that she used to think of love as being “burning red,” a lyric from “Red.” And Track 12 of Lover, “Soon You’ll Get Better,” is like Track 12 of Fearless, “The Best Day” (one of my all-time favs)—both are songs about Taylor’s mom, Andrea Swift, who is currently battling cancer. “Soon You’ll Get Better” is the album’s #1 tear-jerker, and features Andrea’s favorite band, The Dixie Chicks. It’s the closest thing to country on the album.
But on Lover, we are undeniably listening to a new Taylor who brings the storytelling traditions of country into the energetic world of pop. This Taylor writes about love from a stronger place of growth and self-confidence. You know that meme that goes, “I’m you but stronger”? That’s Lover to Taylor’s early discography. Tay’s confidence jumps out clearly in ME!, which was the first single Taylor released on 4.26 and honestly still one of my favorite tracks from the album (catch me yelling “HEY, KIDS! SPELLING IS FUN! on tour). I truly love Brendon Urie’s part in that song. Although “ME!”might have a reputation for being a “kids’ bop,” it channels a form of self-awareness that we also get on “Afterglow,” which is about a lover who understands her own flaws: “It’s all me, in my head.” Both “Afterglow” and “ME!” speak to the beauty and possibility of experiencing a storm with someone and recovering together afterwards, be it in the rain or in the light. It’s not just self-awareness that Taylor demonstrates on Lover, but also social awareness—this is the year she finally became vocally political, after all. “YNTCD” was her first LGBTQ anthem. Although some have accused Tay of “queerbaiting” (there’s always some flaw to pick out, isn’t there), the song is truly Taylor’s love letter as an ally to the LGBTQ community. Then there’s “The Man,” which slams the patriarchy by imagining a world in which Taylor is not a woman, but a man. “If I was out flashing my dollars I’d be a bitch, not a baller,” she sings. She also gives Leo Dicaprio a well-deserved roast; while Taylor’s dating life has received extensive scrutiny, tabloids don’t hate on “Leo in Saint-Tropez” the way they lambast Taylor for ‘serial-dating.’ “The Man” also sounds very much like HAIM’s “Forever” (“Dress” on reputation gave me HAIM vibes too). And I’ll forever stan Taylor x HAIM.
In Red, Taylor sings “Stay Stay Stay” to someone who later likely breaks her heart. Interestingly, the song on Lover that sounds like a musical echo to that track is “Paper Rings,” an adrenaline rush of a song about getting married. The song is another perfect 60s bop, and I love all the counting that happens in the song; it lyrically and spiritually channels the “you’re the only one I want” energy from Grease. “I like shiny things,” sings Taylor (we know) “but I’d marry you with paper rings.” And theother elephant-in-the-room song about marriage is of course “Lover,” which has literal wedding vows in its beautiful bridge. Of the three marriage-related songs on this album, “Lover” wins my heart (and it’s Taylor’s favorite song that she’s ever written, I hear). It’s a beautiful ballad that comes straight from the heart. Like the best Taylor Swift songs, it’s personal. We get straight to the time and place, like in “Cornelia Street,” the street on which Taylor used to live. In fact, the song’s melody seems to share the same musical pattern as “Delicate,” and some fans even speculate that the “third floor on the West side” from “Delicate” is on Cornelia Street. Another song is that is very location-specific is “London Boy,” which is a personal favorite for its allusion-heavy lyrics and catchy beat. I know that some Londoners are shaking their heads at the lyrics, but oh well—it’s a cute nod to Taylor’s current boyfriend of three years, Joe Alwyn, who (if you haven’t figured it out by now) is the inspiration behind many of the songs on this album.  Another standout, should-be-a-single track is the aforementioned “Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince,” which demonstrates Tay’s exquisite, imaginative storytelling style and mastery of metaphor (“Getaway Car” was the masterful-metaphor song on reputation). I could really write a paper on these lyrics. The Guardian seems to think it’s about living in Trump’s America? It’s a song that, along with “The Archer,” is reminiscent of Lana Del Rey’s dreamy pop (although the latter, while lyrically lovely, has yet to totally grow on me). Taylor has long been outspoken about her love for Lana’s music (they also share a producer: the amazing Jack Antonoff). If this means that Taylor’s music is beginning to take on a slightly indie-rock quality, I’m not complaining. For instance, “Death by a Thousand Cuts” has a slightly Vampire Weekend-quality to it, especially with the freestyle piano tinkling that emerges towards the chorus. But it would be remiss for me to compare Taylor to other artists (although maybe this at least proves that I listen to other music hahahahahah). As she sings in “ME!”, she’s the only one of her(!), and Lover proves this to a T (see what I did there?). From the records it broke even before release day to the pop perfection we’re getting on every track, Lover is bold and brassy, and Taylor knows it.
A few months ago, Taylor wrote in an Elle listicle that she has learned to “step into the daylight and let it go.” That line has indeed revealed itself to be a lyric from the final track of Lover, “Daylight,” a 5-minute long song that beautifully closes the album. “I don’t wanna look at anything else now that I saw you,” sings Taylor to her lover. But she also ends with a monologue: “You are what you love.” For Taylor, to love someone is to also love yourself. And that message of self-love radiates throughout Lover.
Earlier this year, I read an article with the headline, “Sad Taylor Swift is the Best Taylor Swift.” While it’s true that artistic production does often come from places of suffering and heartbreak, Lover steps into the daylight and delivers songs on an album that is wonderfully bright. The album cover, shot by the talented Valheria Rocha, captures the softness and loveliness of this glow. In Lover, Taylor is not our heartbreak princess. And we don’t want her to be, either. She’s braver than “Fearless,” and she’s more than simply “Clean.” I’d like to argue that Taylor is at her best at her brightest, which is to say at her clearest and cleverest. She’s someone who shines, inside and out, in her music and in her life. The illuminating, skin-clearing grace that she delivers on Lover lights up my room. This review is glowing, and so is Lover.
