Duke Thomas hcs

- he has literally no idea what he wants to do when hes older, part of him wants to be a social worker like his mum, or a paleontologist, or a film director, but he kinda flips between possible careers every month or so. (rn its poet)

- he goes to see local bands all the time, around one a week, most of the time with the other we are robin kids (or the robin-squad as they’ve been lovingly nicknamed), Riko, Izzy, Dax and Dre. And he always tries to make Dax’s bands shows when ever they get gigs

- hes actually in a poly relationship with the rest of the robin-squad. It started with Duke and Izzy then Riko joined and Dax and Dre who were already in a relationship joining once Dre had stopped being emotionally constipated

- Duke, Steph and Babs have been banned from being on trivia teams together because they always win by a landslide.

- Dax has always been weird about Duke being fostered by Bruce and avoids going to the manor at all costs, Duke knows why but hes not going to mention it until Dax feels comfortable.

- of all his partners he had the worst relationship with Dre, after the constant fighting while in the we are robin movement together they tried to avoid each other and at least be civil while in their relationship. Eventually their other partners caught on and started trying to get them together. It took a while but one day Duke came over with a rocky dvd and said ‘you like boxing, I like films, d’ya wanna just see if we can go the whole movie without fighting??’.

- The next day all of their partners phone wallpapers were changed to a photo of Duke leaning against Dre's shoulder, both asleep with the rocky credits playing in the background.

- Duke has a list in his notes app labeled ‘shit list’ number one is Izzy's brother, two is joker, three gnomon and for a brief period of time number four was Dick but they have since made up (via a pokemon cards game)

- Cass was the first person Duke introduced his partners to in the family. shes probably the person hes closest too of all the bats and the first one he considered family.

- after a really annoying case or a busy week Duke and Cass will meet on the tallest building in Gotham and just sit together, talking, watching the sunset, sharing the blackmail on their siblings, or just hanging out on a tall building with some pastries (Duke usually gets a danish while Cass gets a chocolate croissant)

Two of my all time favorite cartoon blorbos being redemption arc bastards…. autistics who found identity under structure but found out the systems they were working for/born into were corrupt and only using them and didn’t actually care for their well being and just hurt others and reject those who don’t fit into their rigid structures and then coming over to the good side bc they’re good people but not knowing quite how to act or exist in a life where they have to dictate themself and their own identity and struggling to make connections but then eventually do and they feel more like themselves as their authentic personalities shine through in degrees they could never have before because the oppressive systems they came from stifled them and punished those who existed in different ways than what was enforced and now that they have the freedom to be themselves they become passionately invested in dorky interests that bring them joy while learning to live with the people around them loving and accepting them for who they are

need to get on my a-spec soapbox for a bit

something that's been on my mind and bothering me is the fact that people are, in a way, gatekeeping characters from being headcanoned as aro/ace. most often i see it manifesting as "this character can't be aro/ace/aroace because they did x!" and it really really bothers me because we a-spec people have such little representation, and when we try to find some for ourselves, even through headcanons, that's taken away from us too.

for example, i saw a post about how katniss everdeen can't be aroace because she married peeta and had kids. (no hate to op btw, i'm just explaining why i disagree strongly). but that statement negates several things. 1) sexual and romantic attraction are spectrums. meaning that some people are going to be on them and still experience sexual and romantic attraction to a degree. they're still a-spec. personally, i headcanon katniss as demiromantic demisexual, meaning she'd need a close emotional bond with someone before she could be attracted to someone in either way. which fits with canon that she is attracted to peeta and also doesn't acknowledge experiencing attraction to anyone else (except maybe platonic attraction with gale but that's another thing). anyway. 2) ATTRACTION IS NOT REQUIRED FOR A RELATIONSHIP. or marriage. or kids. or sex. or kissing. or anything, really. to say katniss can't be a-spec because she does these things erases the experiences of aroaces that do do these things. plus, for younger me, an aroace kid who didn't know he was aroace, seeing a character that wasn't focused on romance at all was important to me. even now, it's still important to me! i'll stand by a-spec katniss because of that!

one that also bothers me, though i see where people are coming from, is kaz brekker and inej ghafa. and though i completely understand not headcanoning them as a-spec, i have seen people shaming the fact that others would interpret them as such. (not to mention i have a-spec headcanons for them both that are supported by canon, but that's a post for another time). in a world where a-spec people have such little representation, why would you try and make us feel bad for looking for it? who does it harm if we headcanon characters as such? i've also seen other people say, "you have tolya and harshaw [other grishaverse characters if you don't know], who are either confirmed or heavily implied, why would you headcanon kaz and inej?" and again, no hate to these people, but have you ever considered that a) i want a wide variety of aro/ace spectrum characters. this includes characters that experience sexual/romantic attraction to some degree, or not at all but still engage in sexual or romantic actions. b) aro and ace people are never the main characters. (and in the case of tolya and harshaw, i'd like there to be more than just two minor characters who are in only 4/9 books combined). because in typical literature and media, main characters have to have romance. they have to have sex, or sexiness, at least. and behind that, they have to have attraction. if they have these things without attraction, they're a slut or a whore or an emotionless robot. c) so often, i am looking for myself in characters, because i know if i don't search, i will almost never explicitly find them.

all this big long stuff to say that i cannot put into words the exact, deep, acute ache i feel when i think about aroace representation and about how little we have. who does it benefit to keep us from finding ourselves and our unique experiences in characters we like? i'm just so exhausted of having my identities' representations stolen from me just because people don't understand what it means to be aromantic or asexual. so for the love of all things, please just let me find happiness in my favorite characters, cause god knows we aren't getting good, varied, common representation anytime soon.

Y'all ever just look at a character and immediately project your aromanticism/asexuality onto them.

I can take them making the Crosby/Landra thing explicit (even when keeping it vague would have been very doable and truer to his own memoir) but him pushing her about what she actually was doing was annoying. The call we'll see next week is fine, but whining about it in a pub instead of just being like "haha pretty sure my badass former-roomate is a spy, crazy times we live in, ammirite?" rubbed me the wrong way.

Vance headcanon mumbling- Home life and the dog again

He lives in my head. I keep saying I don’t have a lot of headcanons (which is technically true) but I do for him.

Vance’s folks got Oldie (‘old boy’ he has a name but everyone just calls him this. His real names Rich) when Vance was two. There’s a myriad of baby vance pictures with this huge dog, like way to many in some old album.

There is no expressing how much the dog means to Vance. It has been there for him more than his own Father. His dad, at least when he was young, wasn’t always there when he was growing up and it wasn’t by any fault of his own just simply that he’s a Trucker. There’s long hours and weeks spent alone from your family. So when his dad would be on a job he’d have the dog.

I still think his relationship with his dad is strained. I believe his mom left. One of those “gone in the night” situations where your never quite sure what happened until you get a postcard years later. This causes his dad to find another job where he can be closer to home- likely at the plant or other blue collar work. Vance understandstands - he loves his dad as you do but it’s a strained relationship - he’s back and trying to parent him and he’s not taking it well. He used to be “cool” when he had his time off. Etc

Vance wasn’t technically raised in a single parent home but it became that way. I like the situation of his mom just- leaving instead of dying etc because it’s a lot more? Complicated I suppose. Sort of that love/hate he has a lot of

He’s one of those kid who calls their mom “Ma.” And “mama” when embarrassed/exasperated. Change my mind.
