BOOKS I READ IN 2023
Here's what I read in 2023. What has now become an annual tradition of sorts!
An unusual year in reading for me. The first half of the year was very slow, and I mostly finished two long books I've been trying to finish for years by William Morris and Robert Musil. Then the PSAC strike, and more time to read. After that, I made a reading plan and stuck to it, trying to read every day at least a chapter of a book on the list. I also ended up re-reading several books this year - transcribing notes at first, I ended up going over the entire book a second time. I also tried to take extensive notes on every new book. I also snuck a few theses I read onto the list - it feels weird not to include a several hundred page work I went over with a fine-toothed comb. Mostly academic books, germane to my own research and writing, but some strong forays into topics I don't normally think about much. Plus some genuinely good 'amateur' history, too.
Re-reads are marked by a plus sign and my most enjoyable or interesting reads are marked with an asterisk.

Elsa Lanchester and Boris Karloff in Bride of Frankenstein (James Whale, 1935)
Cast: Boris Karloff, Colin Clive, Valerie Hobson, Ernest Thesiger, Elsa Lanchester, Gavin Gordon, Douglas Watson, Una O’Connor, E.E. Clive, Lucien Prival, O.P. Heggie, Dwight Frye. Screenplay: William Hurlbut, John L, Balderston. Cinematography: John J. Mescall. Art direction: Charles D. Hall. Film editing: Ted J. Kent. Music: Franz Waxman.
Funny, campy, occasionally scary, and featuring over-the-top performances by Ernest Thesiger, Dwight Frye, and Una O'Connor, Bride of Frankenstein may also be the saddest of all horror movies. Much has been made of a perceived subtext of the film, based in part on the knowledge that its director, James Whale, and Thesiger were openly gay, and it's possible to see the plight of the monster (Boris Karloff) as analogous to that of the gays of their time, subject to ridicule and repression from a hostile society. Queer subtext aside, the monster is the ultimate outsider, an anomalous and inarticulate being, whatever his sexuality. He briefly finds companionship in the blind hermit (O.P. Heggie) who begins to teach him to speak -- including the word "friend" -- but their relationship is doomed by the intrusion of the world of ordinary humans, a world he can never be part of. In the end, when the mate (Elsa Lanchester) who has been created for him rejects him, his only recourse is self-destruction. "We belong dead!" the monster proclaims. To see Bride of Frankenstein as some sort of parable about gays in society would then be an endorsement of suicide as the only option. Whale was too much of an artist to turn his film into any kind of message, however latent in the fantastic tale he is telling. Better instead to relish Karloff's ability to give a subtle performance that shows through pounds of makeup. Or Lanchester's remarkable control and timing in bringing the bride to life, including the squawks and hisses that she claimed to have developed by watching swans in the park. Or John J. Mescall's classic black-and-white cinematography, Charles D. Hall's set designs, and Franz Waxman's score. Yes, Colin Clive and Valerie Hobson are a most improbable couple as the Frankensteins. Clive was far gone into alcoholism and looks it, but nobody could have delivered the line "She's alive! Alive!" more memorably.
jasmine ⇢ do you have a movie or book you loved but will never watch/read again?
Honestly probably a lot of things for a bunch of different reasons? but Mostly it's going to be the Nightmare Before Christmas & most of the MCU for me.
papyrus ⇢ if you put your ‘on repeat’ playlist on shuffle, what’s the first song that comes up? what do you like about it / associate it with?
I don't have one! i've listened to too many podcasts this week, sorry.
However, I did make a big playlist of "things i've listened to a lot recently" and put that on shuffle
And i got: the Parlor Mob - Everything you're breathing for
what I like: the whole package. I like the tempo, the tenor of the singer's voice, the lyrics.
And I was bound to the bed post
I was doing what I could to make a change
Caught a sigh of indifference
When a certain feeling struck so strange
While it was my wish to keep you from such pain
I regret to say my efforts were in vain
Little one, how can it be
You hurt yourself but do not see
And everything you're breathing for
Will let you down and leave you sore
a message against holding on to something that hurts you, especially if you *know* it's hurting you and you still let it.
what it reminds me of: it's from a fandom playlist I made, so that! (Detroit: Become Human, Gavin Reed / RK900, eyy)
another one, because i'm a fucking sucker for it:
All them Witches - Am I Going Up?
what i like about it: the tempo - it's technically stoner rock i think, so the tempo doesn't change a whole lot, the rhythm just spirals and changes slightly on every go 'round. It's hypnotic and just familiar enough that I split my attention enough to really really focus on something else. this song is pretty same-y, but other ATW songs can get pretty wacky (Charles William, Dirt Preachers, When God Comes Back, i'm looking at you)
Am I going up?
Am I going down?
Am I going nowhere?
I don't wanna wait too long
While I'm buried in the ground
I don't wanna wait to long
While I'm buried in the ground

Hugh E. Williams, Jr., 91, of Luzerne passed away peacefully on May 1, 2024 in General Hospital with his daughters by his side.
Born in Luzerne, he was the son of the late Eugene & Mae Williams.
He was a graduate of Luzerne High School, class of 1951 and a member of the Luzerne United Methodist Church
He was a proud US Army veteran who served in the Korean Conflict with the Infantry division and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the United National Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1955.
Hugh was married to the love of his life Arlene for 67 years. They met as high school sweethearts, and they did everything together. He held many professional titles but his favorite by far was, “Dad”, “Pop-Pop” and “Great-Grand-Pop.” Together they raised 3 daughters, and were a significant part of the lives of their 5 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.
After retiring from Native Textiles with over 40 years of service, Hugh enjoyed many more years serving various Masonic organizations and Irem Temple. He was a 50year member of King David Lodge serving as its Worshipful Master in 1983, later in 1999 he was appointed to District Deputy Grand Master of the 12th Masonic District and served in that capacity for six years. In addition, he served in the Knights Templar as Commander along with Caldwell Consistory, Red Cross of Constantine and ultimately named a 33 degree Mason in 2010.
He was a man who wore many hats, particularly for Irem Temple. He served as Director of the Clown Unit, President of MASCA and finally Potentate in 1996.
Although these were professional positions that held great responsibility, Hugh’s love of these organizations was always about the people and the work of the Shriners. In his younger years, as a member of the clown unit, he was often seen running along the parade route interacting with the spectators, especially the children.
Hugh and Arlene made many life-long friends along the way. Many who became like family celebrating the weddings of the daughters, births of their grandchildren and their milestone birthdays. Most of all, Hugh’s favorite place to celebrate was on “The Patio.” We will continue to celebrate his life and the impact he had on us and those who knew him.
Hugh is survived by his wife Arlene, daughters Kathy Evans (David), Kim Williams (Michael) and Amy Lahart (Charles), along with his grandchildren, Larry, Jimmy, Erin, Zachary, Gavin and the apple of his eye his great granddaughter Hope.
Funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Monday, May 6th, at Hugh B. Hughes & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 1044 Wyoming Ave., Forty Fort. Interment will be held at St. Ignatius Cemetery, Pringle.
Family and friends are asked to call from 3 to 5 PM on Sunday, May 5th to Hugh B. Hughes & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, Forty Fort.
The family would like to thank the staff of Allied Medical Services for the compassionate care they showed Hugh while he was a resident at the facility.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Hugh’s name to the Shriners Children’s Hospital, 3551 North Broad Street, Philadelphia PA 19140.
Friends may call on Sunday from 3-5pm at Hugh B. Hughes Funeral Home, Wyoming Avenue in Forty-Fort. Funeral will be held on Monday at 11:00 with burial in St Ignatius cemetery.

Lady C Tea YouTube 7/25/23 (a few nuggets paraphrased by me)
Greetings from Castle Goring!Lady C, its calms me greatly that the democrats are not taking Meghan’s calls and they are not going to be taken in by her. I heard she had several meetings with Gavin Newsom because she wants to be appointed to Diane Feinstein’s senate seat. This astonishes me. She wants Gordon Getty to help her. I am so nervous. She is a malignant person and will never stop. Do not be worried. From what I have been hearing in the last 36 hours. I understand that Gavin Newsom is fed up with Meghan trying to get the remaining term for Diane Feinstein which comes along with access to the Intelligence committee. This means she would have access to sensitive information worldwide and paid security. Newsom is sick of her. Meghan has misunderstood the situation. First of all, the democrats view Meghan as a loose cannon. Second, Gavin Newsom was Gordon Getty’s son’s good friend. Meghan is delusional. According to my source who has close ties to the democrats, Newsom has blocked her from his mobile phone and told aides to not connect her calls.Lady C, OMG here we go again with breaking news Meghan and Harry are moving to Malibu due to all these projects she has. I read that Meghan wants to replicate Oprah’s career by having a talk show, a media empire, then making a triumphant return to the silver screen! How are the Sussexes going to buy a house in Malibu when they are cash poor right now? Who is going to bankroll Meghan’s career? Not Gordon Getty from what I hear. Tyler Perry? I am told Tyler’s interest lie elsewhere. Oprah Winfrey? Oprah is well known for financing her own interests. She is very much quid pro quo. She has achieved what Meghan would like to achieve. Oprah was an actress, but never a star. Are you hearing anything from your contacts? I am hearing that Meghan is hitting brick walls. I am reading that Meghan is tearing her (paid for) hair out. Nobody loves Megsy baby anymore 😥😥😥😥😥 The idea that Meghan Markle will be a power player in Hollywood is ludicrous. She does not have the talent, the depth, personality, intelligence, knowledge, she does not have the character. She is only as good as #6 on the call sheet and when she was made aware that her contract was in danger, she decided to go to England to get a spot on “Made on Chelsea.” And when that didn’t work, she decided she wanted a rich English husband. And she landed a Prince. When she realized the life wasn’t as grand as she wanted, she scooped him up to America to fill 16 lavatories with substances they are both abundant in. I think she has been a total failure.Lady C, I thought the Harkle’s have separated and hair plugs went to Africa? I think we are seeing red herrings everywhere we look. There are red herrings everywhere. Harry is in Africa. Meghan is going to knock Oprah off her perch. They are separating. They are moving to Malibu. We are bombarded. However, their antics are bringing to our attention that we must value our liberties. Our rights to express our opinions in a lawful manner.Lady C, spends a long time talking about Coutts Bank revealing how people are being abused by powerful entities. She talks about how YouTube has been instrumental in getting out information to the public because the mainstream media is controlled by a small group of people. Also, apologies not posting her last few videos, I was away. You didn’t miss much other than she did drop a little nugget to say Meghan and Harry are beginning to get their comeuppance. She says the big ones are yet to happen and to not ask her for more than that. She also said the democrats prefer to align themselves with King Charles and Prince William and feel Meghan and Harry's agenda is too extreme.Toodles Sinners!
