Jaime Reyes sucks at driving and here's why
Tumblr media
... What's up, Jaime? Is that your girlfriend? Why don't you have a car?
His old man runs a garage and he doesn't have a car ...
(Panel from Blue Beetle (2006) #26)
Throughout the 2006 series we seldom see Jaime drive. He's always carpooled with Brenda and Paco to school, and even after he becomes Blue Beetle full-time it's Paco who drives him around on missions. Which makes sense, considering he got the scarab at 16, leaving him little incentive to learn to drive and drive well when he could just fly. In issue #26 we see him do exactly that: he commutes to a family gathering by flying in in his bugsuit.
So Jaime is not the best driver. He probably drove Once™ and is barred from the driver's seat by everyone from El Paso to his Titans friend group. But no, it's not what you're thinking. He can drive. He just drives like a grandpa. Three miles an hour below the speed limit at all times, uses his blinkers religiously, and waits way too long to make turns because he doesn't trust that the gap in traffic is long enough. He gets to a busy junction and starts sweating bullets. The Scarab is screaming in his head about imminent danger. He's trying to read signals and Khaji tells him to just floor it. Everytime Jaime gets into a car the scarab is screaming about the stupidity of right of way in traffic laws.
The first time Jaime borrows the family car after the scarab fuses to his spine it goes like this:
Khaji: IF I WERE DRIVING WE WOULD HAVE ARRIVED 22 MINUTES AGO
Jaime: If you were driving we wouldn't have enough car left to arrive in!!!! not to mention all the pedestrian casualties!!!!
Jaime can't even help navigate the road with the scarab's built-in GPS system because roads don't make sense to Khaji and it never maps drivable routes.
Khaji: turn right in 500 feet
Jaime: khaji theres no road in 500 feet
Khaji: turn right in 200 feet
Jaime: khaji theres no road, reroute!!!
Khaji: turn right in 15 feet
Jaime: KHAJI IM NOT DRIVING THIS CAR THROUGH A WALMART, REROUTE
(dialogues courtesy of @lemontongues )
In conclusion, Jaime absolutely sucks at driving, thanks for coming to our ted talk

The fact that Jesse posted so much BTS content recently 🤧 we knew it was too good to be true. He was soaking it all in one last time ❤️ It's so sad he can't even be in most of the season. It's all just so sad and shocking. And Jesse deserves better 😭

Loosely related to that one post about why Aziraphale asked Crowley to deal with the guard, and while it is definitely a sweet thought that he did it because "Crowley likes saving him", canon does not actually support that. like at all.
I went back to watch the scene, and this is what Aziraphale yells at him when Crowley is focused on the loss of his car:
"CROWLEY! I am the nice one! You can't expect me to do the dirty work."
Tumblr media
No compassion, no softness, no love, no nothing. Compare the way Aziraphale talks to him here to when Crowley first tells him that the bookshop burned down—they're on completely opposite ends of the spectrum.
On top of that, it's not like Crowley is hiding his feelings in this scene. How can Aziraphale look at this face and still decide that actually, his fucked up ideological hang-ups are more important than Crowley losing what is essentially everything he has; he and the Bentley are connected, he can feel it burn.
Tumblr media
This was never about Crowley or making him feel better. This was EXACTLY the same line of thinking Aziraphale has expressed over and over throughout the centuries, including at the bandstand.
'You're the demon, you're evil and you do bad things, I'm an angel and Pure—go do the dirty work for me.'
Now, before you say "but Aziraphale dealt with the guard", go watch the clip for yourself and see how the scene progresses. The only reason he does deal with the guard is because he begins threatening to shoot them right this moment, so Aziraphale sends him Somewhere Else to avoid getting Tracy killed and himself discorporated (again).
Otherwise he would have stood in front of a kneeling, grieving Crowley and yelled at him until he did what he wanted him to. Time and time again, Aziraphale shows a complete disregard for Crowley's emotions, needs, and experiences.
Tumblr media
Crowley is asking for one thing: To have a moment to process this loss, but no, Aziraphale does not give a single fuck because him not having to do "dirty work" is much more important than anything Crowley might be dealing with.
Using Aziraphale's "rescuing me makes him happy" line to retcon literal facts from earlier in the series simply does not work and never will.

I finally read Good Omens!🥳
Although I already knew a lot of book facts, just from being in the GO fandom, there were still quite a few aspects, that surprised me for one reason or another. So here are the notes I took while reading.
!Spoilers for the book “Good Omens” by Neil Gaiman!
Things that surprised me:
God is referred to as He?! (But I might have misinterpreted that?)
Nanny!Crowley has a gray dog named Rover with scarlet eyes.
Aziraphale & Crowley take on more roles during their time with Warlock, than it is shown in the show. Nanny!Crowley and gardener!Aziraphale leave, and return as Warlock’s tutors, Mr. Harrison (Crowley) and Mr. Cortese (Aziraphale).
Crowley is the one who resurrects the dead dove, that doesn’t survive Warlock’s birthday and Aziraphale’s magic show.😌
It is stated that Crowley isn’t good with animals. (Apparently he used to fall off of horses.)
In the book we get an answer on the whereabouts of the third baby. The boy lives in Tadfield as well. Adam calls him Greasy Johnson and he is the leader of another group of children in town.
Adam has a sister named Sarah!
Contrary to its portrayal in the show, Crowley’s flat is described as rather bright, with white walls and a white leather sofa.
Crowley met Leonardo da Vinci and explained “the helicopter thing” to him. One more example of Crowley’s strange bits of knowledge of the future.
The bookshop collapses completely during the fire.
Aziraphale briefly occupies multiple other bodies, before he stays with Madame Tracy, which was extremely funny to read.
Crowley doesn’t go to a pub after the fire and therefore he doesn’t encounter the disembodied Aziraphale. But later on it reads: “He [Crowley] might just as well find a nice little restaurant and get completely and utterly pissed out of his mind while he waited for the world to end.” So I guess they took Crowley’s musings from the book and made them reality in the show.
Crowley has bright red eyes while driving the burning Bentley.
Metatron was at the air force base and he appeared as a young man.
The wings of demons are the same as angels, however they are often better groomed. So book!Crowley’s current wings are white as well?
Satan never appears in person.
They don’t switch bodies/ appearances!!!
Unlike the show, the book doesn’t end with the nightingale line. The book ends with Adam, which is fitting in more than one way. Reading the book after watching s1 and especially after s2, makes it a bit difficult at times to acknowledge that the story/ the book is mainly about Adam, the Antichrist and the apocalypse, and only secondarily about an angel and a demon.
And then there are all the things that aren’t in the book…at all... Crowley doesn’t miracle away the paint on Aziraphale’s coat. No nose to nose scene in the former nunnery. No bandstand break-up scene. No “And when I’m off in the stars I won’t even think about you.”. No “Somebody killed my best friend.”. … And no flashbacks!!!🤯
Things I assumed were fanfiction inventions or fan’s headcanons, but turned out to be real:
It is explicitly mentioned, that Aziraphale has “elegantly manicured hands”!
Crowley loves the TV show “Golden Girls”.
I was sure all the posts, I read about Anathema’s thoughts on Crowley and Aziraphale, when they drove her home after the accident, were just fan headcanons. However she is indeed unsure what to make of the two (in her view) men, who picked her up. She even tells them that she has a bread knife at hand to defend herself if need be. But when Crowley says “Goodnight, miss. Get in, angel.”, she thinks “Ah. Well, that explained it. She had been perfectly safe after all.” 🤭
“For Go-, for Sa-, for somebody’s sake” is a book thing as well!!
Apparently wing grooming is canon. 😅
WTF- and 🥰-moments:
Nanny!Crowley’s description: “Something about her might have said nanny (…) It also coughed discreetly and muttered that she could well be the sort of nanny who advertises unspecified but strangely explicit services in certain magazines.” 👀😳😘
The scene when Crowley says goodbye to Aziraphale, who just found Anathema’s book in the car, broke my heart a little bit: “He [Aziraphale] fumbled for his keys, dropped them on the pavement, picked them up, dropped them again, and hurried to the shop door. “We’ll be in touch then, shall we?” Crowley called after him. Aziraphale paused in the act of turning the key. “What?” he said. “Oh. Oh. Yes. Fine. Jolly good.” And he slammed the door. “Right,” mumbled Crowley, suddenly feeling very alone.”
Adam argues with Metatron and Beelzebub about him not wanting to rule the world and says: “I’m pointing out things. Seems to me you can’t blame people for pointing out things.” This reminded me of angel!Crowley, who had only asked some questions, who had just pointed out things…😢
“He smiled at Crowley. “I’d just like to say,” he said, “if we don’t get out of this, that… I’ll have known, deep down inside, that there was a spark of goodness in you.” (…) Aziraphale held out his hand. “Nice knowing you,” he said. Crowley took it. “Here is to the next time,” he said. “And… Aziraphale?” “Yes.” “Just remember I’ll have known that, deep down inside, you were just enough of a bastard to be worth liking.” 😩😍I loved the whole passage, and for some reason I always thought it was “worth knowing” and not “worth liking”.
Towards the end, Aziraphale tells Crowley, that there are new books in his bookshop, books he never chose himself, due to Adam putting the world back together a bit differently than it was before. And then we get this: “Gosh, I’m sorry.”, said Crowley, who knew how much the angel had treasured his book collection.🥺
Book details used in season 2:
The season 2 conversation between Crowley & Aziraphale, in Scotland during the 1827 flashback, about people having the chance to choose between good and evil, is from the book.
In the book there is a witchfinder named Mr. Dalrymple, which is the name of the surgeon in Edinburgh in 1827. I doubt it is the same person though.?
In episode 6 of season 2 Crowley says to Muriel: “Angels are like bees. Fiercely protective of their hive if you’re trying to get in. (…)” In the book it says: “Sometimes human beings are very much like bees. Bees are fiercely protective of their hive, provided you are outside it. (...)”
Evidently Neil used some details of the book, which weren’t incorporated in season 1, for season 2, and now I’m super curious which remaining elements (if any) he will pick for season 3.
I know these are no new observations or groundbreaking thoughts, but I wanted to document my experience reading the book for the first time.😊

not to be a #hater but i'm feeling like the men who think they're the joker every time i see TS. i cannot remember anything being so forcibly shoved down my throat as TS is. so apparently Tracy Chapman performed Fast Car at the Scammys. big deal cause she never does shows anymore. so I typed "tracy chapman grammys" on youtube and tell me how did they have the audacity to show me a two-minute video of Taylor "reacting" (standing & blocking the view & lip syncing) to the performance as the very first result???? is Chapman a secondary character of her own performance???? is a random celeb's reaction the most important thing about it????
so tired of her and her brainless boyfriend also. i remember watching her miss america doc a few years ago and being so moved (💀) by a celeb caring so much about politics and womens issues and that was all a performance to her ig cause why is she hanging around this guy who uses the word breeders and says that if a woman doesn't fuck him the 3rd time she sees him it's over. i would kill him if i could. i feel like this one "i hope jakey dies" tumblr post every time i see his ugly unwashed airheaded ass.
you’re so real anon

What comic issue did the whole kon v steph showdown happen? In which he basically called her a poser? I’m wondering what the rest of the young justice teams reaction to her was. I think greta tried to kill her at one point? I don’t think she’s very well liked among that team, but it also makes me wonder if she’s very well liked in the wider hero community at all besides her small group of vigilantes she’s enmeshed herself with through getting involved w Tim and to a lesser extent Batman? What are your views?
Teen Titans (2003) issue #13:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
That's it in its entirety. The bit with Tim and Conner is very much the story's B-plot, the A-plot is focused on Beast Boy and the rest of the Titans back in San Fran.
As for Steph and Greta -- it is true that Greta is the one member of YJ that Steph ever truly interacted with during that time period. I actually wrote up a whole thing here about the arc of those interactions, but it was kind of off-topic with your question and also long enough that it really deserves its own post, especially because lining it all up together without the multi-year gap between plot points gave me a revelation about how the story actually went.
I'm going to try to get that post up in the next day or so to prove my point but the summation here is: the first time they met, Greta explicitly didn't try to kill Steph -- but afterwards, Steph framed it as "she tried to kill me in a jealous rage" and people took Steph's side because part of Greta's story was that her "good people bad powers" thing made her kind of sus and that's what eventually drove her to join Darksied.
So while Steph did get mentioned in YJ, including getting brought in to help as part of the invasion of Zandia in issues 50-52, her only significant contribution there was a very brief stand-off with Greta and getting stuck in a bubble with a several other 90's characters who I'm pretty sure don't exist anymore.
Tumblr media
The only other person I recognize here is Lagoon Boy. The pink filter doesn't help.
Other than that, the only interaction Steph's had with any member of Tim's friend group is the one issue of Teen Titans (2003), #66, where they're doing this membership drive thing and Steph (recently back from faking her death) tags along so they can pretend that maaaaybe she's going to join the team, but actually she's just there to have a very brief interaction with Traci 13 and Bombshell.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And an even briefer, awkward stare-down with Cassie that's only there because she and Tim's budding romance had been awkwardly cut short just so he could back to Steph the very instant she got back from faking her death no matter how little sense that made.
Tumblr media
And then Steph wasn't even interested in joining the team anyway she was just there for quote, "moral support" as Tim told Cassie he needed to take a break for a while and focus on the pre-Final Crisis chaos going down in Gotham.
Stephanie has never spoken to Bart, Anita, Slobo, or Ray so far as I know. She's never even met Cissie because the Arrowette who went to Zandia turned out to be Bonnie in disguise.
Pre-Flashpoint, the only other people she'd met outside of Gotham are Supergirl (whom she met in World's Finest (2009)) and Squire, who's still technically a Bat even if she lives in England. Stargirl and Miss Martian show up alongside Bombshell and Supergirl towards the end of Steph's solo series but they come out of nowhere only because BQM had wanted to make them part of Steph's entourage at some point but didn't get the chance, so I don't really count them. Nor do I count her showing up in a group shot at the end of the Gail Simone Wonder Woman, since that was just a line-up of cameos from every female hero she could get at the time.
So with all that as the preamble, to answer your second question: no, I don't think Steph is very well-liked by the wider superhero community. I also don't think she's disliked. I think the vast majority of heroes and villains have no idea who she is.
If they know her at all, it's probably as, "That girl in the purple that Cass is always hanging out with" or "Robin's ex-girlfriend who faked her death that one time" or maybe even as, "There was a girl Robin at some point right? I feel like I heard that somewhere," particularly since there was a big media shake-up after War Games. Heck, they might even know her as, "Cluemaster's daughter; she runs with the Bats, yeah? Heh, sucks to be Arthur" since he's actually gotten around more than her just by virtue of being on the Suicide Squad.
But as Spoiler, as Batgirl, as a hero? Basically unknown outside of Gotham. She's always been too much of a supporting character to develop those kinds of connections.

Year-End Poll #74: 2023
Tumblr media
[Image description: a collage of photos of the 10 musicians and musical groups featured in this poll. In order from left to right, top to bottom: Morgan Wallen, Miley Cyrus, SZA, Taylor Swift, Metro Boomin and 21 Savage, Rema and Selena Gomez, The Weeknd and Ariana Grande, Luke Combs, SZA, David Guetta and Bebe Rexha. End description]
More information about this blog here
Before getting into the ramble, I'm just going to get ahead of the responses and clarify that when I name a song on these polls, I use the official name of the song as it's listed on the Billboard charts (obviously unless the official title includes an uncensored slur or the song was credited to an artist's deadname, which I haven't had to deal with as of now.) Luke Comb's cover of Tracy Chapman's Fast Car is simply listed as "Fast Car - Luke Combs" on Billboard. Not "Luke Comb's cover of Fast Car" or "Fast Car by Tracy Chapman (Luke Combs version)."
Now that I got that out of the way. Hi. Good to see you all again. Welcome to the end of 2023. We made it.
This is going to be an interesting entry on this blog for me. Because not only is this the first time I posted a poll from the current chart, this is also the first time since 2009 when I have not been closely monitoring the charts all year. So right now, I feel like I'm trying to look back to figure out what happened.
So. What happened?
Ever since the streaming era began, it's been clear that pop success matters less and less, but that feeling was especially strong this year. I'm not saying any of these songs are bad (that's not the point of this blog). But streaming splintered people's listening habits so much that everyone is able to listen to their own thing. Before I got big into chart watching, I was not an avid pop listener. But I was still knew which songs were popular because they were so much harder to avoid.
As I'm writing this, I've been listening to various Top 40/100 stations on the radio. Even ignoring the number of Christmas songs, I have yet to hear a song that came out in 2023. It makes sense to hear songs from 2022, since songs often take a while to build momentum (such as the tracks from SZA's SOS), but I've heard songs from 2014, 2013, 2006, 1995, etc.
And that's not even touching the year-end chart itself which includes 1. songs from 2022 (Kill Bill, Anti-Hero, Snooze, Calm Down), 2. a remix of a song from 2016 (Die for You), 3. a cover/remake of a song from 1996 (Creepin), 4. a cover of a song from 1988 (Fast Car), and 5. a song with an interpolation of a song from 1998 (I'm Good (Blue)). There are only 2 songs on the top 10 that are from 2023.
This year's tendency to look back is emphasized further by the genre which had the largest presence: country music. Not just because country music tends to be more traditional, but country music hasn't had a presence this big on the top 100 since the 90s. The biggest song of the year is a country-pop track by Morgan Wallen, whose 36 track album debuted at number one on the Billboard album chart. Not the country album chart. The Billboard 200. Beyond that, we have Luke Combs, whose cover of Fast Car reached the top 10, but two other singles from his album Growin' Up reached the Billboard Year End 100 without relying on the usual techniques country songs often need to cross over to the pop charts. Additionally, each year as of late tends to have it's pick of "think-piecey songs," whether it's Blurred Lines in 2013, WAP in 2020, or [insert any Taylor Swift song here]. The two most controversial songs of the year also happened to be country, with Oliver Anthony's Rich Men North of Richmond and Jason Aldean's Try That in a Small Town.
Why was country so big this year? One of my theories is that with streaming splintering people's listening habits so much, chart metrics will tend to favor physical media. I don't think it's a coincidence that Taylor Swift tends to dominate the charts while also being one of the top-selling artists on vinyl. If people are willing to pay actual money for your music instead of letting it stream in the background, the charts are going to calculate that differently. Not only are country fans more likely to buy physical music, but the two previously mentioned controversial country songs were also helped by right-leaning listeners boosting their sales, resulting in the two songs receiving a 78 and a 66 position on the year-end chart respectively.
As I'm writing this, I'm worrying that I'm not giving country music its proper credit. "Why was country music so big?" is a question that doesn't need to have a deeper answer. "A lot of people liked it so it had a larger presence" is also a sufficient answer. Country music doesn't have to cheat to reach the charts. The reason I'm delving into this is not the mere fact that country was popular, but the fact that country was so popular and seemed to shape the pop landscape as a whole, while not having the usual staples of a country-pop crossover. Unlike previous crossovers, none of the songs I mentioned needed a pop star or a rap verse to break onto the pop charts.
But speaking of a genre requiring a pop star to find a mainstream chart presence, 2023 marks the year of the first afrobeats song to reach a billion streams on Spotify, with Rema and Selena Gomez's Calm Down. But even without the pop feature, afrobeats also had an explosive year in 2023, and it's possible we'll only see the genre grow more popularity, similar to how reggaeton took over the pop landscape after Despacito crossed over to the mainstream American charts in 2017. If you, like me, aren't that familiar with the history of this genre and you would like to learn more, please know that afrobeat and afrobeats are two distinct genres. This article also does a good rundown of the differences and their respective histories. Also, while the song itself isn't afrobeats, Unavailable by Davido came out this year and it's incredible. The full album is amazing too. It's dreamy and atmospheric with energetic drums and I need to find a slot for it in my favorite releases of the year.
For a year where pop music was widely considered to have a down year, I sure had a lot to talk about. I haven't even touched on the "decline of rap music" (especially sad since it's the 50th anniversary of the genre), Taylor Swift's dominance (I mentioned her twice though; she'll live), or delved deeper into the presence of older songs on the charts. It certainly was an interesting year in music to talk about. But listening to it? Well, I'll let you decide that.
But if you look past the top 10 (or even the top 100), this was an incredible year for music. I haven't had the time to listen to every new release (thanks law school), but I still listened to enough that I came out of this year with some of my favorite musical projects of all time. I plan on sharing my favorite songs/albums of the year in a later post.
Thank you for spending this year in music with me.

Just saw a lovely post talk about some romantic things, like how it went against the "I'll die/kill for you cause i love you" and went instead, "would you not rest, care for yourself, come back safe, lay with me, be with me" Have Ruth and Tracy ever gotten in a disagreement like that? Or a burst of strong emotions that really showed how deeply they care for one another?
Ruth and Tracy are very interested compared to my other ships because they are like...the least romantic together.
They do have feelings for each other but they are very constipated emotionally and have such drastic ways of expressing their emotions to each other. And with Ruth being a cartoon, she constantly takes the most extreme routes and is used to seeing extreme reactions back so Tracy's more tired and subtle demeanor flies over her head sometimes and she even misreads him from time to time.
Ruth is also basically immortal while Tracy is not.
Which means Ruth can put herself through some crazy things while Tracy has to hang back whenever they do wind up confronting a killer toon. Ruth can take a bonk on the head with an oversized mallet and live. Tracy becomes a bloody and fractured stain on the ground.
That doesn't mean Tracy never worries about Ruth since all that slap stick has to hurt. So he typically tries to get Ruth to stop being so reckless but it comes off like a lecture while she is just "Oh PLEASE! I can handle 'em boss! Stop naggin me!" when Tracy doesn't want the only person who has shown genuine care for him (outside of Leroy and Miriam) to get hurt.
They frequently have arguments stemming from Ruth and her cartoon shenanigans and Tracy just not liking her getting knocked around so hard when she doesn't have to. Especially when it comes to Wesley and the weird tricks he pulls.
Miriam and Leroy often watch these fights with popcorn and soda in hand.

WIP Wednesday
Turns out holiday with family does not provide as much time for writing as I thought… the lazing around is less focussed, more flitting between crossword and bits of 4 different fics I’m reading and the actual real life physical BOOK. Crikey, it’s been a weirdly long while since I picked up one of those.
However I was lying awake at 4am and that is a much more natural time for writing for me (apparently…) so… here’s something I’m working on which started as part of one thing then shifted into its own thing and is the beginning of a belated answer to the fabfivefeb prompt for Scott (because of course I’m trying to use them all because I’m a muppet). It’s super rough and a bit monologuey. And rough. I probably shouldn’t post it really. But might nudge me into writing some more as I’ll want to improve it as soon as I press post…
Anyway… an external POV of our young flyboy… would love your thoughts.
✈️✈️✈️✈️✈️✈️✈️✈️✈️✈️✈️✈️✈️✈️✈️✈️
Ashmore McKellar’s new wingman was a lunatic and was going to get them both killed.
And that wasn’t even the worst thing about him.
He sat at a quiet corner table nursing a single malt and impassively observed the cocky idiot cackling away with the rest of their unit, none of whom seemed to realise how annoying he was. Everything from the ludicrously immovable hair to the stupid blue sneakers via the childish necklace of wooden beads he seemed to never be without and… ugh and that incredibly irritating dimpled grin. Everything about the man set his teeth on edge.
He wasn’t glaring though - his poker face was always on point. The fact he was fantasising about burning a hole in the side of Tracy’s head should be externally invisible and so it was a shock that, when the man in question glanced up and caught his eye, the happy expression faltered slightly and a crinkle of uncertainty marred his perfect brow.
Oops.
Well it would probably do him good to know not everyone thought the sun shone out of his...
He shook himself slightly and dropped his gaze to the melting ice in his glass. This was not normal: laidback Ash was friends with everyone, to the extent it was sometimes bordering on a character flaw. People just didn’t tend to wind him up.
Ok, time to critically examine the unusually intense reaction… why was he being like this? Was he… jealous? Tracy was undeniably a hotshot, although with a reckless approach that was definitely going to cause trouble. He wasn’t the first of those, however and wouldn’t be the last. Ashmore had never been the best and that didn’t bother him. The skills that seemed to have come naturally to the others he had earned with hard work and constant repetition. He built up to things until he could do what was required. He calculated the parameters to the nth degree and approached every flight manoeuvre with scientific precision. His piloting was efficient and reliable and he got the job done. But this was undeniably rare in his profession and certainly this particular unit was chock full of showboating flyboys and flygirls with whom he got on just fine. So the fact Tracy was no different shouldn’t affect him.
Nor was it even the ridiculous antics that were definitely going to get them both killed… if someone didn’t throttle the guy first. No. It wasn’t that. He could deal with that.
He suppressed a sigh and downed the rest of his drink. It numbed his sore throat and the burn brought a temporary relief to the pressure in his sinuses. Maybe this was really just bad temperedness because he was coming down with something.
Perhaps the whisky brought clarity because suddenly he knew exactly what was going on because Ash’s sub-conscious had already figured out this working relationship was going to be deeply uncomfortable.
Earlier, a headache-ridden and slightly feverish Ashmore McKellar had told everyone he was absolutely Fine. And, as always, everyone had believed him… because they always did. His poker face was, as ever, on point.
Everyone except Scott Tracy, who had seen right through him with those freakishly blue eyes and had palmed him two paracetamol with a pointed eyebrow raise and not let him out of his sight all afternoon.
Damn him.
Nobody got past Ash’s “Fine”.
Nobody.
If Tracy could… then what else was he going to see?

A review and a poll
Tumblr media
The 500 posts milestone appeared today!
‘Tis pleasing that it was today as it marks precisely 1 month of this experiment.
It proves that the TAG Thunderfam is way more active than the number of posts appearing at https://www.tumblr.com/tagged/thunderbirds%20are%20go would suggest!
So, what happened?
- 500 posts in 31 days
- 40+ blogs stalked for TAG-tagged content
- 10 different tag categories used:
TAG Fanart (20%)
TAG Fanfiction (45%)
TAG Screengrabs and Gifs (8%)
TAG RP (4%)
TAG Figures (5%)
TAG Cosplay (1%)
TAG Discussion (everything else) (15%)
Event tags:
Happy Birthday Scott Tracy
AU April
Kapril
Daily was not sustainable but the queue was topped up every 3 days or so. The fact it is shuffled meant that some things appeared out of order.
Did I miss anything? Let me know.
It’s not a zero effort game… I guess it has taken me a few hours over the month to find/check/tag/queue the posts which is time I could be interacting with the Thunderfam as a normal human rather than impartial reblog machine instead… but I’m willing to keep going if it’s actually proving useful to anyone but myself?

The Legendborn Cycle Theory Time!
So Tracy Deonn finally dropped us a delectable little breadcrumb for LB3 (6/6/23) via an Instagram post and I am now going to proceed to overanalyse the shit out of it because I cannot help myself.
Tumblr media
So Ms Deonn is introducing a new magic system (exciting!) and she posted flowers 🌷🌷🌷🌷- fiery-looking tulips in the foreground. She also mentioned that the scene where Bree is introduced to this new system will involve some kind of emotional payoff. So, my theories:
Disclaimer: I just spitball when I make my theories, they are like 50% thinking and 50% intuition. In other words, I may or may not have a logical reason behind them, I'm just here to have fun.
1. Initially I thought it could be Morgaine magic, but Morgaines also use aether, just a different style of it, and I can't see the emotional ties there. May have to think more about it.
2. Fae magic was my second/related thought, but I cannot see the emotional link at this point. Also Fae haven't been (officially?) introduced in this series, though they are present in Arthuriana so it would make sense to have them.
3. Given how Sel mockingly suggests Bree's mom used magic to 'grow prettier flowers,' back in LB, I'm wondering whether this is a magic system that Faye created with Natasia (Sel's mommy). We've seen them blend magic together already for Bree's sake, so maybe out of love for their children and the realisation that they would be separated from them, they ended up devising something entirely new. Maybe the new magic is how Natasia was healed of demonia? We're definitely getting a Natasia story, where we'll probably learn more about Bree's mom via Nat's pov as she explains to Bree. Bree meeting her, learning more about Faye's secret life as a Rootcrafter/Bloodcrafter who befriended a Merlin will definitely be quite touching.
4. Back to a semi-theory /idea I made in a comment on someone's post... Could be possible we see the Shadowking follow through on his promise and drain Bree of his power, almost killing her in the process. Maybe more HC than theory, I can imagine Bree reconciling with Vera and all her mothers in the ancestral plane as she almost dies, and in the process learning from them that there is magic that is borne out of love, and not pain or bloodshed the way bloodcraft is. This 'higher' magic wouldn't come at the cost bargaining your life away or from theft.
Imagines the ancestral plane transformed into a field of tulips, Bree and her mothers all clothed in pretty white dresses... At very least I may turn this into a fic because 😭
5. Linking back to the previous point, tulips represent forgiveness and pure love, suggesting those elements could be at play in this new magic system. It hearkens back to Bree's ancestor - Jesse I think - who drew on her power by thinking about the love she had for her mom (? Can't remember specifics). Maybe she had the right idea, but wrong magic (bloodcrafted root).
6. There was an article where some of Tracy's favourite books were listed, and it was fun to refer to that list to find out where she may draw some of her inspiration. Of note was the Dark is Rising (DiR) sequence, a series of children's stories that is fantasy based in Arthurian legend. I skimmed through the Wiki for that series and noted lots of themes and ideas overlapping with Legendborn. Notably, the magic system of DiR features three types of magic - Old Magic, Wild Magic, and High Magic. Old Magic is elemental and reminds me of Aether as used by the Order in LBC (Sel explains how magic is physics and aether is an element), Wild Magic is drawn from nature and would be similar to Rootcraft in LBC, and then the third type in DiR is High Magic, - cosmic in origin, and more powerful than the other two. ALL THIS TO SAY I think the new system we'll be introduced to will be incredibly powerful, moreso than what we've seen, and possibly tied into higher principles like love, sacrificial love, forgiveness, truth, etc.
Anyways that's enough rambling for now. I'm actually most excited about seeing how Tracy uses the new system as part of Bree's healing journey. Honestly this series is just so impactful and I know that third book will make me cry (in a good way).

Hank Anderson
This wonderful post was originally written by @blue-blood-and-red as an answer on mine, and I honestly wanted to ask permission to post it separately, but unfortunately, tumblr says that this account no longer exists. However, I still took the liberty of posting this excellent analysis of Hank's personality once again, because it is worthy of attention.
Hank is a very caring and empathetic person, brought down by trauma and being overly aware of the bad elements of humanity. He also places a lot of value on relationships and emotional connections.
Tumblr media
Despite saying he’d burn all androids if it were up to him, his immediate reaction when Connor tries to go over the fence to follow Kara and Alice across the highway is to both physically grab and stop him, and order him to stay. And if Connor asks him later why he did it, his first reason, so, the first instinct for him to say, is that Connor “could have been killed”. He also mentions not wanting to fill out paperwork for damaged equipment but that’s said almost as an afterthought. His main reason really was because Connor could have been killed, and the tone he says it in is really important too, I think. He says it with such a “duh!” tone, because of course he wouldn’t want his partner to get killed, what kind of a question is that? It’s such an obvious choice in Hank’s eyes (consider Hank’s reaction if Connor chooses to continue chasing Rupert rather than help/save Hank.)
The Eden Club chapter is a really important one to me when it comes to getting a look into Hank’s mind and opinions. If you wait and listen long enough while Hank is questioning Floyd Mills, when Floyd is talking about why people come to the club, Hank says something like (this probably isn’t word for word, I’m going off of memory)  “Yeah, the more I learn about people, the more I love my dog.” A bit of a jokey statement, but there’s a definite… bitterness to his tone. He doesn’t like this image of humanity that Floyd is talking about.
Later on in the chapter, in the staff area with all the deactivated androids, Hank has another very bitter moment where he complains that people no longer want relationships, they just want androids who will do everything for them. This isn’t even a cutscene, just a side thing, but this is a very important moment to me. This is where you can really start to think that Hank’s hatred of androids has actually been a hatred of humans, that he places on androids. It’s not the androids themselves Hank hates, it’s the effects their existence has had on humans (humanity’s problems are of course much more complicated than that but it’s still a specific point to this). Hank values relationships and connections so much and in his eyes, androids have supremely lowered the emotional connections between humans. Instead of putting in the effort to grow and nurture romantic relationships, humans are going to androids for pure sex, with no emotion.
Another moment in the staff area, Hank also says something about the androids there that’s really interesting to hear from someone who claims to hate androids. He says something like “They get used until they’re broken and then they get scrapped.” With that bitterness again. I don’t know if he even notices it at the moment, but that really sounds like he’s feeling something for the androids. Some part of him is already upset at this scenario, even before fully seeing them as people.
Onto the deviant Tracis now. I think this encounter is the one that really flips the switch in Hank. This is the definite turning point for him, where he really realizes that androids aren’t just soulless machines. And this actually ties into one of the previous moments in this chapter, when he complains about no one wanting relationships anymore. Hank is bitter and angry over humans not cultivating relationships. And now here’s two androids, displaying love, love he doesn’t see in humanity, but that’s obviously so important to him. Humanity has been a disappointment to Hank, and he’s blamed androids for it, but in this moment, androids become more of a… hopeful thing. Hank’s seeing love again, when he was despairing over the lack of it in the world.
Moving on to The Bridge chapter. Hank shows more empathy for the deviant Tracis here, saying they really seemed to be in love, they just wanted to be together. There’s also a moment that can happen here, if Connor talks about the shared aspect of emotional shock between deviants. Hank’s bitterness comes back and he says something like “Those girls at the Eden Club sure had reason to be upset.” Hank is really seeing androids as people now. And with that, comes the implications of places like the Eden Club. And he’s angry about it. I can see Hank’s sense of justice in this moment. This is something that is shown some other times too, how Hank’s sympathies are with people in need, or the “lower” people. This is the same character trait that makes him look the other way (or even participate some) in illegal activities as long as no one is getting hurt. Hank didn’t become a cop to enforce “law and order”, he became a cop to help people. People are more important to him than laws.
Moving off track some, to talk about a different type of love in Hank’s life. Hank says he used to come to Riverside Park a lot before… (Cole died.) Riverside Park has playground equipment. So we can put it together that Hank used to bring Cole there to play. Very often apparently. This makes me think of something else, when it comes to androids. A lot of people have androids to take care of their child(ren). Nothing is shown about Hank’s feelings on this but I can imagine him being unhappy about it. I can just imagine him frequently taking Cole to this park, feeling pride that he actually spends time with his son, he doesn’t just hand him off to an android.
There’s plenty of valid reasons for parents to have childcare androids, of course, but I can imagine Hank already being somewhat bitter about humanity and androids even before Cole died. And then imagine how this bitterness grew after the accident. I’m thinking of his line in Kamski’s house, when he says he’d have a few words he’d like to say to his creator (God). I’m just imagining Hank, seeing children and babies out and about with only an android watching over them, thinking, “All these people don’t even want to spend time with their kids, but they get to keep them, while fate took mine away.”
I’ve kind of been going scene by scene, but I can’t think of anything substantial in other scenes, that I haven’t already touched on. So here’s some ending tidbits.
Hank also has a lot of bitterness over the red ice epidemic and that’s also tied with how important things like family and empathy are to him. All around him, people would rather get high, have emotionless sex with androids, etc, instead of living. Instead of being with, caring for, and loving other people. Families and social bonds are being destroyed because of people relying too much on drugs and technology, and it already upset him before, but especially now that he’s lost Cole. He would give anything to have his family back and he’s surrounded by people who have what he no longer does, and they don’t even care, they just give it up for empty, meaningless highs. (And he knows he’s fallen into the same sort of trap, drinking away his pain, gaining his own addiction, but after losing Cole he just… stopped caring as much. Didn’t let himself care as much.)
And this is the very core to Hank, I think. And part of why he hated androids.  He hates falsities. He hates people being uncaring and apathetic. He hated androids because they were emotionless, fake. Things he found often enough in actual humans. Hank’s change of heart about androids makes perfect sense once you realize that connection. Hank hated androids because they couldn’t feel, couldn’t love. When he saw that they could, that changed his mind. Because those are the things that really matter to Hank. Love, empathy, compassion. Things that Hank actually has in abundance but they’re hidden under layers of bitterness and hostility. Layers he’s built because his love and empathy have only led to pain for him.
tl;dr Hank’s actually an extremely empathetic and caring person but has been beaten up by the apathy and lows of humanity he’s been surrounded with, and the death of his son.

Chapter 1 | Chapter 2 | Chapter 3
Gordon and Trench come face-to-mask.
------
Fake base located and other family members quelled for the time being, the three brothers lay in wait among the shrubbery of the little island they were on, munching on some rations from Thunderbird 2’s hold. The Thunderbirds themselves had been hidden to the best of their ability, only Thunderbird 1’s bright silver being truly visible through the leaves. As they waited, the conversation from earlier picked up speed again.
“So, if Commander Shore working it out wasn’t what spooked you so much, Gordon…” Scott, ever the big eater, chomped on his protein bar. “What was?”
“Yeah, we were there in the room with you. Nothing else he said was too out of the ordinary.”
Gordon sighed. He wasn’t exactly thrilled about telling them this. “You know how he said Stingray was down a crew member?” His brothers nodded. “That’s what I’ve been worried about. Shore told me that ‘Betrayal never comes from an enemy’. The reason he said that is because the crew member, whoever it was, went rogue. Abandoned the WASPs. Quite possibly joined Titan.” The aquanaut shrugged, acting more nonchalant about the whole thing than he felt. This whole thing had been his exact nightmare since the war with Titanica had begun. “He couldn’t tell me the full thing, so he was speaking in code.”
Scott and Virgil’s eyes lit up in recognition. Of course, it all made sense now. “And…” Scott started. “You think whoever it is will come here to meet you?”
“Why not just kill me if that’s not the case?” Gordon answered honestly. “Why use a tracker instead of a missile?” He held up the tracker itself, a small aquamarine light on it flickering. “Everyone on that crew are smart. It stands to reason that whoever’s defected just uses those smarts for another cause now.” He sighed, looking down. “The wrong cause…”
Unbeknownst to him, his brothers exchanged a look. “Whatever happens, we’re here for you.” Scott whispered, and the three Tracy’s looked out to the waves.
Gordon looked up at them, smiling gratefully. “Thanks, guys.”
Ahead of them, the waves slowly and steadily receded as low tide began, almost lulling them to sleep. “When do you think these Aquaphibians will get here? I’d quite like to sleep at a reasonable time tonight.” Virgil sighed.
“How about right now?” An artificial voice behind them answered him, waking all three of them up instantly. A quick look behind them confirmed it. Five figures stood menacingly, clearly having been waiting for the right moment. Gordon immediately took notice of what the centre figure wore. He wore a fully aquamarine coloured uniform, at least Gordon assumed they were a ‘he’ based on their overall build, the boots a somewhat darker shade and seaweed that wrapped around his leg. On his hip, a teal scabbard held a sword with a silver hilt, with a golden seashell at the very end. The mask on his face confirmed his Aquaphibian allegiance, but he was clearly human. And clearly the one in charge. “Get them, boys.” He ordered, pointing at the three IR operatives.
“Move!” Gordon ordered, his WASP training kicking in. He delivered a swift kick to the Aquaphibian that was about to pounce on him, watching in satisfaction as the sea-dweller fell to the ground, unconscious. He risked a look at his brothers. Scott was also putting his military experience to good use, and also had a knocked-out Aquaphibian in front of him. Virgil, unlike his brothers, had no military background, but that didn’t mean he didn’t know how to defend himself. “Go for the gills!”
The leader of the undersea group watched as the three of them continued to incapacitate the forces he’d brought with him. Soon, International Rescue had finished taking out the Aquaphibians, and he stepped back as the trio walked towards him, the pilot of Thunderbird 4 just a couple of feet forward from the others. As they glared at him, he smirked at them, although they couldn’t see that.
“Oh, Gordon.” He sighed, robotic voice still hiding his true identity from his old friend. It didn't matter, the aquanaut would learn who he was soon enough. “You should know better than to turn your back on your allies.” Gordon gasped, spinning around quickly, but not quick enough to save Scott and Virgil from getting tackled by two hidden Aquaphibians. And this time, now that the sea-dwellers had their fins on them, there was no way out. Gordon could’ve cursed. He knew he shouldn’t have dragged them into his business. “Or should I just come out with what I know and call them your brothers?” Gordon’s stun gun was on the enemy in front of him in a flash. “I wouldn’t do that if I were you. My men are very…” Guns cocked behind him. And the aquanaut knew they weren’t aiming at him. “Trigger-happy...”
He had no choice. He threw his gun down, even as his brothers behind him protested the move. “Who are you? What do you want?”
“In Titanica, they call me Captain Trench.” He took a bow, eyes still on the angry IR operative in case he tried anything. “Second-in-command of the Aquaphibian army, right-hand of His Majesty. Mighty King Titan, and ex-WASP.” He huffed. “Although I do hope I can drop that last part from my introduction someday.”
Gordon scoffed. “And who are you really?”
Captain Trench chuckled. A tinny sound that grated on Gordon’s eardrums and frayed his nerves. “You’ll find out soon enough.” He gave his subordinates keeping a tight hold of the other Tracy’s a nod. “Take the prisoners to the sub while I… catch up with my old friend…”
“I swear Trench, if you hurt them-”
“You’re in no position to demand things of me.” Captain Trench almost hissed, but did his best to keep his tone neutral. “As long as you cooperate, your family will be unharmed and returned to you once our little chat is over. Consider it an assurance for me that you won’t rip me to shreds once my men have left.”
Gordon huffed, taking one last look at his brothers before they were carted off in different directions. They both offered a silent promise that neither of them could say out loud with the Aquaphibians clinging to them. They would be alright. “Fine.” The aquanaut stared warningly at his new enemy, and alleged old friend. “But if your slimy excuses of men lay even a single finger on them, I will retaliate.” He watched as his family disappeared further into the undergrowth.
“Ironic, coming from a man so dedicated to preserving lives.” Trench commented.
“Once you attacked us and took my brother’s hostage, all bets were off…” He shot back.
Trench nodded. “Fair enough.” He gestured to the beach in front of them. “Shall we?”
“Let’s.”
