Very special thanks to @74paris for sending me the whole magazine (that I will be publishing little by little).

Ironic Parallels
For all that the political Left likes to claim that they're without bias or bigotry, just existing as a Jew in Leftist spaces will quickly demonstrate otherwise. And for maximum irony, the patterns of systemic antisemitism on the Left don't mirror right-wing antisemitism. Instead, they mirror right-wing racism. Imperfectly, for sure, but the parallels between how the Right treats Black people and how the Left treats Jews are striking.
Discussions of systemic bigotry are deflected with Whataboutisms so that the instigating issue isn't addressed. For African-Americans, it's often "What about Black-on-Black crime?" and similar by the Right-Wing, and for Jews, it's "What about Israel?"
Alternatively, a prominent political advocacy organization is attacked and defamed in order to again deflect and dismiss. "BLM is violent and engages in riots!" or the usual libels against ACORN, and "Israel is fascist!" or the usual libels against AIPAC and the ADL.
At the same time, prominent dead members have their words cherrypicked to make people feel good about themselves and their treatment of that group. Contrast how MLK's "I had a dream!" speech is used by the Right-Wing with how Anne Frank's "I believe that people are fundamentally good at heart" is used by the Left.
On that same theme, token members are held up to deflect accusations of systemic bias. African-American right-wingers prove that the Right Isn't Racist, and Jewish Antizionists prove that the Left isn't antisemitic--or, conversely, the extremist members of the individual group are cherrypicked to "prove" that the whole group is like them.
Furthermore, laws are proposed or passed to disrupt cultural practices; people of African descent face bias for having natural hair, while Jews routinely face people proposing banning circumcision, kosher slaughter, or the keeping of an eruv. But, you see, they can't be biased, because they know all about that group... based on what they saw on TV/Movies/Wikipedia, so they know that the group can handle these laws and rules just "fine".
The targeted group are treated as having an unfair advantage in the racial hierarchy. Consider the parallels between a right-winger complaining about Affirmative Action, and a Left-Winger saying that, since "Jews are White and therefore privileged, antisemitism isn't real discrimination."
But as soon as one shows up in a space outside of where they "belong", they're treated with suspicion until proven that they're acceptable... if ever. A POC in a store is treated as a potential thief, and a Jew in public is automatically acceptable to interrogate if they're a "Zionist".
Consider also how historical revisionism is rife as well. For POC, slavery and imperialism are erased from textbooks, as well as the backlash against Critical Race Theory, the 1619 Project and more. Meanwhile for Jews, pretty much nothing exists in educational curriculums between the start of the Diaspora (assuming it's even mentioned) and the Holocaust, which is treated as an aberration of bigotry instead of the culmination of centuries of hate. Even the admission of the real history is treated as an unforgiveable sin. Black people were never mistreated or enslaved, but were Guest Workers. Jews never came from the Levant and are Just White People From Europe.
And that's before we even get into systemic disenfranchisement. The original "ghetto" was the Jewish ghetto of Venice, and Jews are still routinely discriminated against for hiring, just as POC are.
But at the same time, everyone knows that "Blacks always play the race card" and that "Jews always accuse people of antisemitism."
And so on and so forth.
They're not perfect parallels--and I'm not saying that they are--but they are striking parallels in behavior.
__
I drafted this in April 2023, and it's been sitting in my drafts ever since, as I didn't have the courage to post it.
But given the current SURGE in Leftist Antisemitism, I somehow don't care anymore.

w all the "sinners" theme going on in the qsmp i wanted to summarize everyones sins pre-qsmp lore
Take this as an unofficial and incomplete guide to the qsmp chars past mistakes and wrongdoings. I will also dive on their personalities, since i dont think they'd change so much from pre-lore.
ill keep working on this and adding more info !!! if smth is wrong lmk plss
the colors signify the intensity and/or quantity of known sins.
things like "demon", "cryptid" and "grim reaper" are added here not bc i personally consider them bad, but bc the fed/ the eye might see them as issues.
· qbbh: grim reaper demon. caused a catastrophe when arrived that killed many people (some theorize it was atlantis). burned a childrens hospital once. did something in venice. trickster, liar. (as egglore is semi-canon u can count it in and say hes a former cult leader but eh). Besides his children, trusts no one. Sandwitches the truth between lies to a point no one can tell when hes lying or not. Intentionally acts suspicious, pushing friends and loved ones away. Tends to pull deathly and sometimes harmful pranks on others for fun. Tends to lie abt unserious things for his own amusement. I consider bbh a fox-like spirit.
· qcellbit: cannibal, torturer, murderer. mentor in the war was a demon. liar, manipulator. name originates from his time in prision, where he used a broken cellphone to frighten the other inmates. Kept his nature while in the island, it appearing more softly in the start (the Regret arc, where he falsely betrayed everyone to get intel on the fed), and fully unleashing when he learned the truth abt his past ─ killing the fed workers and threatning qPac ─ and in Purgatory.
· qmike: thief. stole from rich ppl in order to donate to orphanages w qpac. both betrayed qcellbit (formerly cell) when they escaped from prision, leaving him for dead. Not afraid to go against authority figures. Does everything to protect his family. Doesnt trust a lot of people. Stands his ground.
· qfit: 2b2t veteran. i dont need to say more.
· qroier: was obsessive over his last bf. made a cult in his name. tried to kill him ig.
· qmouse: demon & proud. excentric, likes death and blood. enjoys chaos and suffering.
· qfoolish: afaik we dont have much info on his past. Isnt afraid to do what he believes is necessary, even when it makes him a villain. Patient and cunning. Tends to tell the truth, despite not always saying his true intentions. Two-faced.
· qforever: was a corrupt politician. bf from outside the island is a vampire. possibly not a human, although nothing is truly confirmed. If unhuman, theories and hcs span from werewolf, to fae, to elf. His mistakes arise from being too good for his own good. When he became president, he declared he didnt want to be corrupt again, or become a dictator. Always tries to be as morally right as he can, even though it may push his friends away.
· qpac: thief. stole from rich ppl in order to donate to orphanages w qpac. both betrayed qcellbit (formerly cell) when they escaped from prision, leaving him for dead. Has abandonment and self-esteem issues.
· qphil: angel of death. married to lady death herself. If Antarctic Empire is confirmed cannon, hes also a world-conquerer and war criminal.
· qmissa: grim reaper (unconfirmed lore afaik). Naive and innocent. Has major self-esteem issues.
· qtina: demon. hides her identity for unclear resons.
· qjaiden: liar, manipulator. even tho, is a kind soul. fed experiment. besides this, not much info on her past.
· qslime: we dont have any info on his past. Has a weird toxic relationship w qmarianna. Certainly not one of the purest islanders.
·qmarianna: we dont have any info on his past. Has a weird toxic relationship w qsime. Certainly not one of the purest islanders.
· qaypierre: fed experiment (afaik; i guess). he has smth going on.
· qbagi: nothing particularly bad stands out abt her past.
· qbagh: besides being a fed experiment and an islander since was a child, nothing bad stands out abt her past and/or current actions.
· qtubbo: we dont have any info on his past. Naive and impulsive young adult.
· qfelps: he is a weird one. He doesnt have any sins in his past, as he was one of the "good guys". When he was a guard at Alcatraz, cellbit attacked him him. It is unknown if he survived the attack or came back to life.
· qetoiles: we dont have any info on his past. Is a noble warrior, and values fairness over anything.
· qantoine: we dont know. no one knows. is envolved w the feds and cucurucho. a type of cryptid or smth.

Thief Lord News
i'm still away from my laptop/slightly shellshocked after meeting cornelia BUT during the interview portion she said that she'd been determined not to work on any long stories this year, but when she went to Venice, an idea ambushed her and she can't shake it off. A bit later she confirmed (predictably) that it's something related to The Thief Lord 👀

My first thoughts straight after watching Dead Reckoning!
SPOILERS
I am so disappointed.
From the start, the film is a mess. The writing is pretty bad, to be honest. The humour doesn't quite click like the others but most of all, the plot is.. what?
They really shouldn't have gone with AI. God, I wish they hadn't. That opening. Meh.
Oh and here's two halves of a key. That keeps getting pickpocketed. They're really important but no one knows why. They try to explain it so many times but none of us gets it. That's how dumb it is.
Uh, so is Ethan like the head of the IMF now? Like wtf, the whole bit about the IMF is confusing and bad. The choices they apparently all had to make? Nah. That flashback? Nah.
An arms dealer hosts a party in Venice? And posts two guards outside the door? Sure. Why not.
One of the biggest letdowns is what they did with the female characters. I've always praised McQ for his writing of female characters. You'd think that having Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, Pom Klementieff and Hayley Atwell would be great. But no.
The biggest letdown is obviously the treatment of Ilsa Faust, a fan favourite. Ilsa has always been written so well. Remember how they deleted the kiss in Fallout because it made Ilsa weak at Ethan's expense?
And yet Ilsa's very short storyline in the entire film, no wait, in the first half only (?!) is that she is killed in order to hurt Ethan? And the reason why is because an AI is making Ethan choose between two women, only one can live…
Talk. About. Making. Her. Weak. At. Ethan's. Expense. And bad writing.
Also, we have Kittridge saying Ethan is always helping Ilsa out of trouble when it is *literally* the other way around. Did I mention bad writing or is it just Kittridge getting it all wrong?
They fridged the best character of the franchise? And then, in the next scene, Ethan looks sad for a moment, Benji wipes a tear and then the next moment, the team convinces this stranger, this thief, who kept running away from Ethan.. to join the team? I-. No words.
They had every chance of making Ilsa join the team. She was out of MI6. Literally, all we've seen of Ilsa with the team has been great? Fallout? She smiles and seems happy to be with them and they work so well together. But no, kill Ilsa for no reason and have this sort of damsel in distress *replace* her?
Sure. Because we can't have two women on the team. Wow.
Not to mention Pom as Paris, who is this kickass, cool baddie who turns… Good when Ethan saves her life? Okay.
Vanessa Kirby doesn't have much to do either, unfortunately.
I don't wanna get too much into it with Grace, but the forced moments between her and Ethan are so cringe. Like, he just met her and all she's done is run away from him but yeah, let's have these moments where we say each other's first names and look like we're about to cry and oh, are you okay?
To me, it doesn't even really feel like a Mission: Impossible movie. Something feels off. And with the writing.. It's like they had these three big action scenes, the desert, car chase and the train scene and they didn't know how to put them together?
I know M:I is fun action and it's always been a bit over the top but.. The train sequence. When Gabriel times that fall? And just as Grace is about to get shot Ethan crashes into the train. I-.
Sorry but.. This doesn't do it for me.

Plausible works of improving nonfiction consumed in 2023: 10

Balioc's Choice Award, Fiction Division: The Circus of Dr. Lao, Charles G. Finney
>>>> Honorable Mention: Rats and Gargoyles, Mary Gentle
[This seems like the correct place to point out that, for the Balioc's Choice Awards, I consider only works that were first published with the last 100 years. Otherwise it would just be "surprise, old classics are often classics for a reason."]
Balioc's Choice Award, Nonfiction Division: The Thirteen Petalled Rose: A Discourse on the Essence of Jewish Existence and Belief, Adin Steinsaltz
>>>> Honorable Mention: A City on Mars: Can We Settle Space, Should We Settle Space, and Have We Really Thought This Through?, Kelly and Zach Weinersmith

**********
...this year was much like the last several years, only somehow even more so. Not in a good way, I fear. My current lifestyle continues not to be super-conducive to reading, and writing a weekendlong LARP kind of knocked the wind out of me, both during and after. If it weren't for a massive silly-fun historical-mystery binge in December, my numbers here would be shameful. And you will notice that a whole lot of the things on that list are very short.
Most of the contemporary fiction was pretty much what I expected it to be. There were few real standouts. Things by good authors continued to be mostly good; things by shlocky authors continued to be shlock.
I should probably drive less for my various solitary recreational jaunts, just so that I can spend more of that time with a book. I should definitely read more old stuff, because old stuff continues to be the most reliably rewarding. (The cream of the cream of the old stuff, anyway, which is...what you read.)
I continue to be Extremely In the Market for recommendations of really good, deeply-informative nonfiction.

Recommend something to read!
Tumblr media
I'm trying to get back into reading and don't know what to look for!
What I've read (it's a very short list I know):
Surely you're joking Mr Feynman
Howls Moving Castle
Diary of an Oxygen Thief
Chameleon in a Candy Store
The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (originally read it at school and liked the story so I read it again at home)
Merchant of Venice (read it at school and liked the story)
What I want to read more of:
Poetry about heartbreak, yearning, loss, love and grief
Russian romantic poetry
Possibly some Russian literature (probably something based around a love story)

The Jack of Diamonds - WIP Intro
Genre: Victorian historical fiction, adventure, mystery.
POV: Third person limited, multiple character voices.
Status: Outlining.
Tag: #the jack of diamonds, #JoD
Synopsis
London, 1898. As the century draws to a close, England finds itself enthralled and terrified by a phantom thief, who enacts the most daring burglaries, and leaves a calling card at the scene of the crime; a Jack of Diamonds playing card. The police are baffled and irritated by his ability, and have been attempting to catch him for years. Inspector James Parker has been doggedly following the thief’s movements, and believes he is almost able to catch him.
As for the Jack of Diamonds? He is a young aristocrat by the name of Philip Devlin, drawn into the dark side of London by personal tragedy, and kept there by the thrill of the theft. He and his partner, John Grey, find themselves almost caught one evening, for circumstances they cannot explain after the theft of a rare diamond. The pair argue, and their partnership falls to pieces.
Shortly afterwards, strange things start happening to the both of them. Philip finds himself hunted, and not only by the police, having to flit from house to house, and eventually go abroad to escape his stalkers. John finds himself accused of vicious murders, with his personal emblem, the King of Spades, found on the breast of every victim.
This net that is beginning to ensnare the thieves does not keep itself contained to the underworld. Philip’s childhood friends, Anne and Charles Marlon, are also drawn in, and the plots thicken when a young Venetian by the name of Ezio Dellucci finds himself accompanying the renegade Philip to Venice, the City of Daggers and Mirrors.
Ongoing work, Things I will Post, etc
This is currently still in the latter end of the outlining phase, but I hope to finish with that soon. A couple of early chapters have been written, but might be changed due to plot rearranging, and I have a deal of research to do.
I shall probably post research work, chapter snippets when they happen, and any problems I am having with the mystery. I am very fond of this story, as it’s one of my more recent ideas, although based on a set of articles I wrote for a childhood newspaper.
Tagging @simonnebethel, as you were interested.

For the ask game how 'bout Z & F
Z: Is there a story you’ve written that doesn’t seem to get much love?
A lot of the bonus chapters from Fierce Hero 9 are really low on how many hits they’ve gotten, same with Of Officers And Stuffed Elephants, and Linked Through The Centuries did not get a whole lot of kudos compared to my other works which I suppose I was kind of expecting because its my own Links Meet AU and not connected to LU at all.
I wrote this absolute crack fic like two months ago, 2 a.m. Shenanigans about Wars, Twi, and Sky being absolutely exhausted and getting a chance to act like idiots, and it just did not do very well compared to other things I wrote around that same time
F: Is there a song or a playlist to associate with [insert fic]?
I have a playlist I listen to when I write specifically my You’re A Part Of Me series and here are some of the songs from it :) I have specific songs in here for specific characters
^This is the one the series title is from
^^This one is just in here because I think Mask would vibe with it HEAVILY. Like not relate to it, I just think he’d listen to it and like it
And that’s the audio limit for this post 🫡
