La idea que Allende ha sido traducida al inglés es tan bizarra. Like, i know she's a famous writer and all but it still baffles me when I see Spanish or Portuguese writers being translated, it feels so.. weird
her translated works are so unfortunate... the flavor of her prose becomes crass and unwieldily when translated to english, in my opinion. i don't know if it feels the same to native spanish speakers, but i personally enjoyed the originals a lot more
#translate borges is still excellent as is cortazar#translated pessoa is NIGHTMARISH#even with my limited portuguese the original pessoa was ten times more lyrical#and its absolutely the fault of the translators. one hundred percent#theres this quote from nabokov that different languages have like. different spirits i guess. but there is depth in all of them#you can just read writers like catherynne valente or margaret atwoof or scherezade siobhan or djuna barnes#and SEE how pessoa could be made to sing the same in english
