There's just so much going on in the teaser like the butt, the back muscles, the use of candle to light the cigarette, the butt, the eyes, the smile, the butt.

Everyone keeps talking about the cigarette scene and how lighting eachother's cigarettes symbolizes their desire, but the cigarettes going out soon after that symbolizes how they're doomed but no one is talking about how it's Goncharov's cigarette that goes out first and Andrey notices and DECIDES to put out his cigarette. The symbolism??? Guys, I swear, I couldn't breath

Peter Lorre's Cigarette in "Black Angel" (1946)
Even in the trailer:
"Black Angel" itself is rather charming, and I love Peter in it as Marko, nightclub owner with a shady background, so this post is more tongue-in-cheek than otherwise.
And yet.
The Cigarette should have its own billing.
The Cigarette is clearly an appendage, an extension of Lorre/Marko, lit or unlit.
I can never resist slo-moing his scenes. He comes down the stairs the way he walked all loose-limbed on the sidewalk in "Stranger on the Third Floor." He blows out the lighter. And then that pause, that gorgeous little pause!
The Cigarette + the Lorre Sit-Perch(TM):
Those world-weary eyes with contempt at the back of them for the fools thinking they've put one over on ol' Marko...even The Cigarette looks disappointed.
Lobby cards & promos have The Cigarette also:
(That two-hole-punched lobby card is found here.)
Much as I love seeing Peter in motion with all the dynamic heartbreak of his eyes + this particular character, this last shot of him curved over and brooding is stunning in its isolation.
You want to reach out and comfort him, say just the right words, make just the right gestures - but nothing can reach him in his own particular prison, and he wouldn't believe you anyway.
