One Dress a Day Challenge
Monochrome July
Some Like It Hot / Marilyn Monroe as Sugar Kane Kowalczyk
Now this is a dress to sing torch songs in!
It's also (sadly) one of only a few costumes to have survived from this movie. Here's the description, from when it was auctioned: "A figure-hugging sheer black and nude embellished cocktail dress worn by Marilyn Monroe while singing 'I’m through with Love' atop a grand piano in Billy Wilder’s Some Like It Hot (United Artists, 1959). The dress is composed of black souffle and nude silk jersey embellished with columns of jet-like beads and sequins, scattered beaded butterfly appliques, and beaded fringes. The dress has a built-in bra and an illusion of a deep plunging back that was considered extremely daring for its’ day. Hand finishing work is present to the interior. A Western Costume label inscribed 'Marilyn Monroe 1575-1' is attached to the interior of the bra. Legend tells that Monroe had to be lifted to the piano for this scene as the dress was very form fitting."
Another first--this is my first time featuring Marilyn for this project! I actually considered featuring one of the dresses the guys wear when disguised as women, but this dress is just so iconic.

I've been watching Marilyn Monroe movies on the Criterion Channel since they added a bunch. I didn't watch Some Like it Hot, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes or All About Eve since I've already seen them (I also own them) and just wanted to watch things that were new to me and so far I've watched How to Marry a Millionaire (it was okay), The Seven Year Itch (it was okay), Niagara (it was excellent) and The Misfits (also excellent).
Anyway because of all that Marilyn has been on my mind a lot lately so I decided to draw three of her characters: Sugar Kane from Some Like it Hot, Lorelei Lee from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and Rose Loomis from Niagara. Do I have a favorite Marilyn Monroe movie or character? Idk, I'm still trying to pick a favorite.

Anatomy of a Scene
The two films I chose from list A and B to write about are Moonlight and Some Like it Hot.
Tumblr media
The film "Moonlight" is a 2016 drama film about a young man named Chiron who grows up in Miami and struggles with his identity and sexuality while dealing with the daily challenges of transitioning from childhood to adulthood. The film is divided into three chapters: "Little," "Chiron," and "Black," with every scene focusing on the same individual but transforming from childhood to adulthood. Chiron grew up in a drug and gang-involved neighborhood. While feeling frigid, he finds it difficult to understand who he truly is, but as he grows older, he learns who he is and finds peace. This allows him to open up and embrace himself, rather than keep on rejecting himself as he did in his childhood. Moonlight employs ambient and natural illumination to heighten the seriousness of the subject under discussion. There is a heartwarming moment in the film that made me happy for Chiron when he shared his first queer experience with a friend on a bench.
Tumblr media
"Some Like it Hot" is a 1959 comedy film about two Chicago musicians, Joe and Jerry, who want to flee the city and get away from the gang-related, Spats Colombo after experiencing the Saint Valentine's Day massacre. They require an engagement outside of the city, but the only one available is in an all-girl group performing in Florida. Josephine and Daphne, the substitute guitarist and saxophonist, appear at the train station. With the exception of Sugar Kane Kowalczyk, they definitely enjoy being around women. While billionaire Osgood Fielding III pursues Jerry/Daphne, Joe expressly seeks to charm her. The scene is shot in a dimly illuminated hotel room with soft lighting and a warm color palette producing a romantic and intimate setting. Close-up shots highlight Joe and Sugar's chemistry and attraction, with their body language expressing their desire for each other.

Module 11 Assignment: Anatomy of a Scene
The movie I choose from list A is Casablanca and the movie from list B is Some Like It Hot. Casablanca will be the film I will be analyzing. In the film Casablanca when the Germans invaded Europe during World War II, they fled to America in search of safety. However, to get there, they would first need to travel to Casablanca, where they would then need to apply for departure permits, which are not very common. The most popular place in all of Casablanca right now is Rick's Cafe, managed by American immigrant Rick Blaine, who is also very cynical and for some reason can't go back there. It now appears that the papers two German messengers were transporting were stolen. Ugarte, a frequent customer of Rick's, gives him some letters that he plans to sell, but before he can, he is arrested for the murder of the couriers. Rick is informed by Captain Renault, the Chief of Police, who has no political allegiances, that Victor Laszlo, a leader of the Czechoslovak resistance, is currently in Casablanca and will stop at nothing to obtain an exit visa, but Renault has been told by Major Strasser of the Gestapo to keep Laszlo there. Since Rick was the person Ugarte intended to sell the letters to, Laszlo visits Rick to meet him. However, since Ugarte has been detained, he needs to take a different path. A few of Rick's old scars resurface when he meets Ilsa Lund, who was with him when he was in Paris. The conversation mixes the weary and the cynical; the initial sequences dance with comedy; and it includes wisecracks and epigrams throughout. The movie is one of the most famous and recognizable in cinematic history. It is a fast-paced, emotionally intense relationship set against the troubled background of World War II. The camera builds up again to emphasize the remarkable dialogue after cutting to Captain Renault; the camera was also from the side. At the very last second, Rick is shown as the camera follows up once more. Then the camera switches to a sequence of reverse angle views, starting with a shot from Rick to Ilsa, then back to Rick, then back to Ilsa, then back to Rick, and ultimately back to Ilsa again. Either the other individual or the talker's face came into view as the camera panned. These camera movements carried a subliminal message. It either meant highlighting the discussion or emphasizing the importance of hearing what is being said. I believed this scene was meant to be dramatic considering the camera is going back and forth during a conversation. The dimness of the scene increases the drama that is happening between Rick and Ilsa. In the movie Some Like It Hot there are two Chicago musicians named Joe and Jerry who want to leave the city and get away from the gangster responsible, Spats Colombo after they witness the Saint. Valentine's Day massacre. They need an engagement outside the city, but the only one they can find is in an all-girl band playing in Florida. As the substitute bass and saxophonist, Josephine, and Daphne, arrive at the train station. Except for Sugar Kane Kowalczyk, who sings and plays the ukulele, they undoubtedly appreciate being around the females. While Osgood Fielding III, a billionaire, woos Jerry/Daphne, Joe specifically sets out to charm her.

The film Casa Blanca opens with an image of a spinning globe and the sounds of "La Marseillaise," the French national anthem. A voice-over explains the significance of the city of Casablanca, in French-ruled Morocco. During World War II, many people wanted to escape Europe for America, and Lisbon, Portugal, became the most popular port of exit. Getting to Lisbon was not easy. A tortuous refugee path brought people to Casablanca, where they would search for an exit visa for Portugal. As the narrator finishes the description, the camera shows Casablanca's bustling market. Over the radio, the French police announce that two German officers were murdered on a train and that the murderer is headed for Casablanca. Shortly thereafter, an important German officer, Major Strasser, arrives at the Casablanca airport and is greeted by the local French commander, Captain Louis Renault. Strasser asks about the couriers, and Louis says that the murderer, like everyone else, will be at Rick's that evening.
In the movie Some Like it Hot , It's the winter of 1929 in Chicago. Friends and roommates Jerry and Joe are band musicians, a string bassist and tenor saxophonist respectively. They are also deep in debt. Womanizing and smooth talking Joe is a glass half full type of guy, who figures they can earn quick money gambling with what little money they earn to pay off their debts, while more conservative Jerry is a half glass empty type of guy. They are in the wrong place at the wrong time when they witness a gangland slaying by bootlegger Spats Colombo and his men, Jerry and Joe managing to make it away from the scene within an inch of their lives. Needing to lay low and get out of town away from Spats, they sense an opportunity when they learn of a local jazz band needing a bassist and a saxophonist for a three week gig at a luxurious tropical seaside resort in Miami, all expenses paid. The problem?: it's an all girl band, but nothing that "Geraldine" and "Josephine" can't overcome, the former who instead chooses Daphne as "her" stage name. Sweet Sue, the band leader, has two basic rules for the band members while on tour: no liquor and no men. Beyond needing to evade Spats and his henchmen, and maintain the front of being women, especially in the most private of situations with the other female band members, Jerry and Joe have two primary problems. First, the more brazen Joe falls for one of the other band members, ukulele player and vocalist Sugar Kane Kowalczyk, although Jerry too is attracted to her. Joe does whatever he can to find time to get out of drag to woo Sugar while in Miami, using all the knowledge Josephine gleans directly from Sugar about what turns her crank in potential husband material. And second, Jerry, as Daphne, catches the eye of wealthy lovestruck Osgood Fielding III, who won't take no for an answer.
