This is who I see as James when reading young mungo.

Jodie had the peculiar courage of a girl who never expected to be hit by a man - which was strange, because all three siblings had seen their mother suffer at the hands of her boyfriends. There was no man that Jodie would not answer back, and although Mungo admired that about his sister, he thought she put too much faith in the decency of men. This belief, this bravery, gave her a gallus tongue. When they were little, Jodie, opened her smart mouth amongst gangs and neds and wrote cheques that Hamish would have to cash later. More than once, Mungo had been chinned by some boy he had never met, and then told to pass it along to his mouthy sister.

if i had a penny for everytime i had my heart broken by a book with themes of sexuality and addiction in which the main character is an extremely abused boy with disabilities who is named after a saint i would have two pennies, which isn't alot but its weird that it happened twice

Day 1 - Monday, 31st of July : Favourite Tudor Rivalry Day 2 - Tuesday, 1st of August : Favourite Female Tudor Family Member Day 3 - Wednesday, 2nd of August : Best Tudor Myth Day 4 - Thursday, 3rd of August : Favourite Male Tudor Family Member Day 5 - Friday, 4th of August : Most Used Tudor Related Resource Day 6 - Saturday, 5th of August : Favourite portrayal of a Tudor Family Member Day 7 - Sunday, 6th of August : Favourite Tudor Mentor and Mentee relationship (can be a Tudor familial relationship, or a Tudor and a courtier relationship)

This can cover all events and media that a Tudor family member is present, so from Owen Tudor to Elizabeth Tudor, and may include spouses and acknowledged children of direct members of the Tudor family (if unsure who we cover please check our Family page). We have attempted to make it as broad as possible and no pressure if you are late with some of the days, we will still reblog.

Just finished Young Mungo by Douglass Stuart and I’m just blown away,, I have lost all ability to form coherent thoughts but one thing I will say is that I’m mad that its described as a Romeo and Juliet like story. Obviously the Protestant/Catholic conflict is a major part of the story but its also so much more than that? Its an incredibly family oriented Queer coming of age story about a young gay boy finding himself in the violently homophobic world. Its about violence, bigotry, the working class and how 80s and 90s British politics destroyed generations of working class families, and most of all its about a young boy who’s been ostracized from society for his differences, and forcefully molled by his family to be whatever they need from him, choosing for himself who he is. Its Just so Much and if it becomes “Romeo & Juliet but gay” I will strangle someone and I will not be sorry.

I have finished reading young mungo and I loved it! Great book, sad but ahw. I definitely recommend it but tw for sexual assault
