I know a lot of people hate those "sad girl books" like my year of rest and relaxation and the bell jar and think their overrated, but there's a reason their popular: A lot of books with female characters written by female authors tend to be Mary sues. They are strong and rebellious, yet have a heart of gold, they perfectly fit into the western beauty standard, yet are humble about it. Why do female authors write such one-dimensonal characters? Because women are expected to be perfect in everything. To be beautiful, nice, kind, strong, heterosexual, funny, hard-working etc. bc as an afab person you will always be judged and never get the same amount of recognition as your male peers. This is why there are so many more Mary sues than Gary stus. But the problem is that no afab person like that exists and media like that sets unrealistic standards, that are especially damaging to younger readers. A lot of teenagers are imperfect and mentally ill and those sad girl books give them what they need. Those female protagonists are imperfect, make mistakes, are often weak and a lot of the times are downright insufferable. But they reflect the reality of being an afab person so much more, they express the pain we have in us growing up in a world where we're not wanted. Those books also prove that women too can be morally grey or bad and lazy persons.
I hope you understand why they are gaining popularity.
