Tripping on Utopia by Benjamin Breen
Nora Bateson in a public letter signed by Sevanne Kassarjian, Stephen Nachmanovitch, and Phillip Guddemi accuses Breen of promulgating "falsehoods" and "manipulations of history" in his book. So far as I can see Nora Bateson and those associated have provided little evidence of either. The letter demands "accountability." Likewise accountability entails a responsibilty for the accusers to offer evidence for charges of malfeasance against a scholar.

Just finished free play stephen nachmanovitch and it made me explode . Way behind on brothers karamazov bc I am hardly ever sleeping in my own bed . Have gotten really good at the art of "showering" in the sink of various public establishments . Jazz night was good but I did start sobbing inconsolably towards the end & that went on for about 3 hours .

2017.
Piso el borde, siento la tierra y la textura del borde del planeta con mis pies, miro hacia abajo y veo un universo nublado. Ya no siento el suelo, decido flotar en el borde, en el borde del cosmos.
Desde los cinco años adoro crear: dibujar, pintar, cantar, actuar, bailar, jugar con arcilla libremente. Creo que todo ser transita una creación artística constante desde los primeros años de vida. Buscamos expresar nuestro mundo interno y externo. Muchas veces esa expresión nos es suprimida por la sociedad, la familia y los estatutos artísticos. Es allí cuando nos enseñan lo que se puede ver y tocar, esa "realidad" que en verdad es una construcción ficcional. Paulatinamente nuestro hemisferio derecho pierde la posibilidad de ser desarrollado ampliamente. Si bien siempre está presente en nosotrxs esta parte fundamental de nuestro cerebro, estamos manipuladxs para desarrollar más el hemisferio izquierdo para ser seres controlados, estructurados.
"Todxs nosotrxs podemos quedar apartadxs de nuestra creatividad innata por la acción de fuerzas que nosotrxs mismxs, o la sociedad que nos rodea, ponemos en movimiento. Mis manchas de pintura o arcilla seca en las palmas de mis manos eran plena felicidad para mi ser. También amaba jugar con mi pequeño teclado, tocando "sin saber", sin tener la técnica que "se debe tener", pero era feliz expresando mi arte y todo lo que sentía internamente. Cuando mis xadres vieron que lo mío era el arte, me preguntaron si quería estudiar pinturas y artes del fuego, felizmente dije que sí sin saber a lo que me iba a adentrar. En ese momento no lo notaba profundamente pero con el tiempo aprendí que estudiar arte era adentrarse a un mundo de técnicas y de hacer lo que se "debía" hacer. Tomé cada enseñanza y la hice propia, me adecué a las líneas, técnicas, colores, el pintar hasta donde la línea indicaba, el seguir la técnica de arcilla figurativa utilizando determinadas estecas que se proponían.
Mi arte era tal que sentía que no podía seguir esos reglamentos y me salía de la norma. Creaba figuras a mi modo, dejándome llevar por la abstracción y la combinación de ideas inconscientes que se volvían conscientes una vez que veía mi trabajo terminado. Es decir, allí se veía plasmada mi espritualidad, esa misma que plantea Wassily Kandinsky en "Sobre lo espiritual en el arte", cuando destaca la simpatía y el lazo que tenemos con lxs artistas primitivxs que desde su pureza buscaban representar en sus obras lo esencial, lo espiritual.
Lxs profesorxs me decían que lo que yo creaba era muy interesante pero no era lo pedido, que tenía que seguir tal técnica y yo les decía que inevitablemente sentía hacer esa obra. Me angustiaba por sus críticas y volvía a mi casa decepcionadx, sintiendo que no servía para ese arte que proponían, preguntándome: ¿Qué es entonces el arte? (Si lo que me proponen en verdad es el arte, perderían sentido mis creaciones). Me hacían pensar que el arte debía ser estudiado y seguido como se proponía. Luego me adentré a la escritura donde dejé fluir mis palabras y sentimientos sin que nadie me juzgue y, por eso, aquí me encuentro expresando una vez más a través de mis palabras el por qué para mi el arte está etiquetado y disciplinado, encasillado, manipulado. ¿El arte nos debe hacer sentir libres o encadenadxs?.
"No pueden existir fórmulas para el arte, únicamente es posible saciar los dictámenes del deseo interior. El espíritu es el rector que legitima los trazados en el lienzo. Sin su facultad, toda obra estará inanimada eternamente como unx niñx muertx antes de ver la luz" (Trento Meliana).
Estamos sucumbidxs por la ficción constante, por la construcción y estructura de las cosas, las etiquetas. Desde pequeñxs nos proponen definir, clasificar y tenemos puesto un número en la frente. Nos dicen que tal cosa está bien o mal, nos anulan la magia interna, la creatividad, la fuerza creadora.
¿Por qué tenía que seguir las técnicas cubistas, impresionistas, fauvistas en la escuela? Si bien son técnicas de vanguardia y es importante estudiarlas por su revolución y su quiebre en el arte, no deberíamos entrar en el círculo vicioso de la copia y la reproducción de la obra. Por eso solo deberían servirnos como impulso a crear nuestro propio arte experimental.
Me preguntaba constantemente cuando llegaba a mi hogar sintiendo que a pesar de que mis calificaciones eran altas debido a que seguía esa disciplina plástica, mi ser se sentía vacío y desnutrido por no haber expresado realmente lo que sentía. Para completar esta incoherencia también me obligaban a copiar determinada obra de manera exacta como en una suerte de "copiar y pegar": el juego primitivo deja de existir, cuando a este se le pone precio, deja de ser juego.
Hoy en día, dedicándome de lleno a mi gran pasión, la música, quiero romper toda estructura y sistema impuesto para darle lugar a la experimentación, a mi arte puro, a lo indeterminado. Busco esa catástrofe, ese caos que para la sociedad es una falta de respeto al arte. No se dan cuenta que, en verdad, esquematizarlo y no dejarlo ser libremente, es la mayor desvalorización. Lo predeterminado en el arte encarcela almas.
"El círculo se ha cerrado. La implicación obsesiva con el "orden" en la música ha llevado a un punto en el que el más temerario quiebre respecto del proceso histórico es utilizado con la esperanza de encontrar una salida". (Feldman Morton, Pensamientos verticales. Predeterminado/Indeterminado).
Y aquí me encuentro realizando este ensayo, otra forma predeterminada, en este caso de escritura, que de alguna forma me lleva a estructurar lo que quiero expresar a través de mis palabras. Inevitablemente cuando salimos de una casilla nos damos cuenta que estamos en otra, quizás más pequeña pero con la misma complejidad. Vivimos en un estado constante de "matrioshka"(conjunto de muñecas rusas que se encuentran huecas y en su interior albergan una nueva muñeca, y esta a su vez otra, y así sucesivamente en un número variable).

Knowing and Unknowing in the Cultivation of Worlds or Fields
KNOWING: prior experience, learning, schemata, scripts, acquired protocols; techniques, applicable proficiencies…for simple inclusion, KNOWING: the knowing that allows us to see, read, behold. envision the object or process, to develop and follow plans of engagement…all existing psychological organization according to which we may begin a project and serve as its running guides, protocols. As essential as they are to productive engagement, these past-based protocols of knowing can form relationships out-of-true, missing alternative and high-quality tangents and promotes revision, re-seeing and moving in more improvisational ways.
