#Self-Management

Quote
Just as the ‘self-management’ construct was seminal in the reorganization of capitalism over the past thirty years, citizen action is nothing other than the current instrument of the modernization of politics. This new ‘civilizing process’ is based on the critique of authority developed in the 1970s, when second-order cybernetics was crystalizing. The critique of political representation as a separate power, already recuperated by the new management in the sphere of economic production, is not being reinvested in the political sphere. Everywhere you look it’s all about the horizontality of relations of participation in projects that are meant to replace the old-fashioned hierarchical and bureaucratic authority, counter-powers and decentralizations that are supposed to undo the monopolies and the secrecy. In this way the chains of social interdependence are extended and tightened without hinderance; here they’re made of surveillance, elsewhere of delegation. The integration of civil society by the State and the integration of the State by civil society mesh together more and more smoothly. In this way the the division of labor for the management of populations is organized, an organization necessary to the dynamic of cybernetic capitalism. In the foreseeable future, the affirmation of a ‘world citizenship’ will complete the process

Circling back to supported self-management
I’ve been writing a bit about supported self-management over the last few months. Partly because it’s topical given that medications and exercise offer very small reductions in pain and disability, and people do have lives outside of swallowing a pill and doing 3×10 reps! And partly because it is what we end up doing. It is the bulk of what people living with pain use to have…

Bureaucratisation of the Soviets
'The soviets of 1917 differed from those of 1905 in a number of ways. Most important was that they now had something to defend: the political settlement which had followed the departure of the old regime. They were local authorities and part of the postrevolutionary "establishment." This responsibility put pressure on the leaders of the soviets to work with the Provisional Government to keep public life going till the war was ended and a Constituent Assembly could decide Russia's future. As a result, executive committees tended to develop into a new kind of bureaucracy, ever more remote from the soviets' plenary meetings, where the mood was tumultuous and unruly. ... Gradually, then, workers began to sense once more that their aspirations were being ignored. They began to transfer the focus of their political energy downward, from the town soviets to the elected factory committees which handled affairs at the workplace in individual enterprises and kept up pressure on employers, soviets, and government.'

Back to MS Blogging
Years ago when I was first diagnosed with MS, I started a blog called “MS Musings”, aka “Musings of a Mad Sow” (based on the equivalency of MS with Mad Cow in my mind at the time). I’m soon off to the EndMS conference and this seemed like a good time to revisit my blog to share what I find out at the conference. I’ve been living with MS for over 15 years now and my perspective has changed, but…

WK3 - Emotional Intelligence
Q1. We talked about “Self-management”, “Self-awareness”, “Empathy” and “Relationship management”. Which aspect do you think you are strongest at, and which is something you should try to improve? Discuss with reference to today’s activities, and even your Studio collaborations.
Tumblr media
Today, I learnt about "Self-management”, “Self-awareness”, “Empathy” and “Relationship management” in Critical Thinking Skill class. I think it was an easier class, because usually I think about who I am. Firstly, Self-management is the ability to regulate one’s feelings. If I do Self-management, I would control my emotions, thoughts, and behaviors effectively in different situations. And second, “Self-awareness” is to focus on yourself and how to control your actions, emotions. Lastly, “Relationship management” means a process in which companies foster positive relationships with their customers or business partners. Everyone said to me, I have a lot of thinking. I especially have many thoughts about who I am. Before this class, I hated myself. But now I love myself because a lot of thinking is making me grow up. However, I should try to improve “Relationships Management”. I have not talked to unknown people since I was young because I am an introverted person.
Tumblr media
Also I learned about EQ. EQ is the human ability to recognize, understand, exploit, and manage one’s emotions in positive ways.(EQ is the appraisal coefficient). EQ leaders are less stressful, communicative, compassionate and more likely to overcome challenges. Also, they clearly know how their mental state affects the emotional response of people around them. Kendra Cherry and MSEd said that Interest in teaching and learning social and emotional intelligence has grown in recent years. The goal of these initiatives is not only to improve health and well-being but also prevent bullying.

Micro-stresses and the risk of burnout
I want you to picture this. A senior leader in a consulting firm whose role is that of both Engagement Manager and Project Manager. His client responsibilities involve engaging with eight different clients, hence on any given day he is switching his focus from one client to others. This form of switching has a much greater impact on ability to manage his emotional energy than lesser forms of…

Self-management skills we don't often discuss
I’m back from my summer break (I’m in Aotearoa/New Zealand – we shut down over Christmas/New Year just like the US and UK do over July/August!), and I want to begin with a cracker of a topic: medication management! Now I am not a prescriber. I don’t hold any ability to write prescriptions of any kind, not even exercise ;-). Yet most of the people I’ve seen in clinical practice have started their…

What if I told you that RoobrickMarine went and wrote an entire novella starring my 16th century dog couple? It's very canon-adjacent, well researched and thoughtfully put together, has inspired me a ton during these past months and it's now publicly available at AO3. I highly recommend it.
