San Diego Zoo receives national recognition all the time. But is it really all that? Or is it just another example of a big population center grabbing all the attention?

“The Saint Louis Zoo has welcomed two adorable -- and incredibly rare -- bundles of joy: Anya and Irina, critically endangered Amur leopard cubs.
Amur leopards are thought to be the world's rarest big cat, with around 120 left in the wild in Russia and China, according to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
The zoo, located in St. Louis, announced the exciting birth on May 19 via Twitter. The female cubs were born on April 21 to lucky parents Dot and Samson, said the zoo. Dot arrived at the zoo in 2020. She and the cubs will stay in a private maternity den for the next few months
Tumblr media
"Dot is an excellent mother. It's exciting to see this first-time mom providing great care to her cubs," said carnivores curator Steve Bircher in a news release.”

Two birth announcements from the Saint Louis Zoo!
From the zoo:
2+ pounds of “too cute!” Two critically endangered Amur leopard cubs were born at the Zoo on April 21.
These little females are the first cubs born at the Zoo since 2010 and their births are a significant contribution to the population of Amur leopards in North American zoos. This species is considered one of the most endangered cats in the world.
The cubs were named Anya (pronounced AH-na) and Irina (pronounced eye-REE-na), which mean "grace" and "peace," respectively, by the Zoo's Carnivore Care Team.
From the zoo:
A female Somali wild ass was born at the Zoo on April 8, 2022! Please give a wild welcome to Astrid! Though only a few weeks old, Astrid is a vibrant part of the herd. She is full of energy, but still keeps close to mom Tukia.
A Somali wild ass pregnancy lasts for about one year, after which, typically, a female gives birth to a single foal. Though the female is capable of having a new baby every year, it is more likely that she will breed once every two years. Astrid is our first new foal in three years, and her birth is part of The Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Plan for this species.
The Somali wild ass is one of three subspecies (types) of African wild ass. Overall, the species is the smallest of the wild equids, a group that includes horses, asses and zebras. A typical African wild ass stands about four feet at the shoulder and weighs about 400 to 500 pounds.
This beautiful species is critically endangered. This means they are at high risk of disappearing completely from the wild. There are a number of interconnected reasons for this decline, including overhunting and habitat loss. For years, the Zoo has been working to help the Somali wild ass in its natural habitat. In 2017, we assisted in the development of the Roadmap for the Conservation of the African Wild Ass, which outlines key actions to help conserve this species over the next ten years. We also continue to grow our herd in hopes strengthening this species.

My sister and I already had a set trip to Saint Louis Zoo (because we would be going to a concert in the area) before Saint Louis and Brookfield did a gorilla switch and Zachary moved to Saint Louis. The introduction between Zachary and the Saint Louis bachelors (who are both grown silverbacks) has been a bit slow-going (pretty expected) and I was in contact with someone who frequents the Saint Louis Zoo so we knew it was very unlikely we'd be able to see Zachary during our visit. And that was the case, the 2 silverback bachelors were in the outdoor habitat and Zachary and Kayin (another blackback who moved in a bit after Zachary, the 2 are already together and I've heard they're getting along and I'm so happy Zachary has a buddy around his age to tackle this new environment with!) were in the indoor habitat, which was closed to the public.
2 days after we came back home, guess what happened? The zoo opened up the ape building for a short time and people were able to see Zachary and Kayin, because of course that happened gefryihwudwsij

so if anyone ever wonders about why I will periodically reblog mass amounts of bird posts, I had a huge obsession with birds as a kid that never really left me. I have raised chickens for over a decade. I have a rainbow lorikeet plush that I obsessed over from ages 4 to 12. I had the North American Encyclopedia of Birds at the age of 9 and looked at it regularly. I told my mom I wanted to be a budgie when I grew up. I wanted to be an ornithologist for a while. Even when I started pursuing writing and art more seriously, my first original story was about phoenixes. My current project is about chickens. my family still suffers the consequences of my bird obsession. They know everything about potoos. I keep them updated on the frogmouth at saint louis zoo. I send them birds constantly. Someone save them

Do you happen to know the US zoos that have tuataras? Like where can I go see one👀👀
Yep! They're at Dallas, TX, San Diego, CA, Saint Louis, MO, and Toledo, OH.
I also know they have tuatara at the Chester zoo in the UK, but I'm afraid I don't know of any other zoos with them outside the US and New Zealand.

“Two Amur leopard cubs born at the St. Louis Zoo in April recently had a health check-up. They are “healthy and growing” according to posts on social media from the zoo. Anya and Irina each weigh five and a half pounds and are about 18 inches long. They each have a few tiny teeth coming through.”

Did you happen to know? You can pet the water pancakes (stingrays) at the Saint Louis Zoo? You can! It's a fun activity that only costs $4.95 per person, and then you can spend as much time as you want petting the rays.
They are super friendly and will come up to you for gentle pats on their back. You can also get a cup of feed for them for $1 when you enter.
How are they trained to take food from you or a very excitable small child? The stingrays are trained from when they are small to take food by having the children who participate in the summer camp at the zoo help train them to associate human hands with food.
Be careful, though; they will splash! You can wade with them if you want to as well.

What would they enjoy eating the most, basing on what their species eats?
Obviously pizza /j
Raph and Donnie would be a lot more on the carnivorous side, especially with seafood, as both of their species eat a lot of fish in their diets.
Leo would probably be the closest to a normal human diet, since his species tends to eat a mix of small fish and aquatic vegetation.
And Mikey… his species actually mostly eats bugs like grasshoppers and beetles, but are also known to eat berries and other plants.
Combining this with their human mutation and canon ability to consume regular human food, I think in terms of taste Raph and Donnie would both just love all forms of meat, especially on pizza. Leo I think would really enjoy sushi, and would be a bit more of a pescatarian than his purple and red brother. Mikey wouldn’t be the biggest fan of meat in general, but definitely ate bugs as a kid and still does because he knows Donnie hates it. I also think Mikey would love fruit gummies.
