My betrotheds mom is big in the SCA and does tons of hand sewing and period accurate clothes, she’s got several custom made outfits and enters competitions with her special projects.

One of them she meticulously researched and created a custom glove. I have no idea how much work goes into such a thing other than A Lot but whenever she tells us stories about these competitions she’s always slighted in favor of flashier offerings.

Her most recent endeavor was some kind of stiff collar. I’m not going to embarrass myself pretending to know the specifics but the original ones back in the day used layers of fabric and whale baleen to get a nice strong silhouette. She researched the crap out of it and wrote up a report to go along with the item.

At the judging one of the judges commented, “Well, it’s alright, but it’s so disappointing that it’s not fully authentic, why didn’t you use whale baleen?”

She sputtered out, “Well, if you’d read my report you’d know it’s because it’s illegal!”

If my clubmates would stop saying banger things like this I would be able to stop drawing piles of weapons and twisty banners. But for now it's a pretty fun challenge for my art so I'll allow it

My afternoon project turned out well. Detachable skirts to turn my fencing doublet into a Polish zupan. The sash hides the gap so it looks seamless. Had to dye the canvas myself and got pretty close to match.

My husband just pronounced “SCA” as “ska,” and now all I can think of is:

Finished my belt! And by “finished” I mean “brought the pieces to one of my friends who knows more about leatherworking than me and ask them very nicely for help, and then have them assemble the belt while I watch and try to help like that one Spiderverse meme”.

Though I did press the rivets myself, I enjoy that bit :D

I'm interested in joining the SCA, but I'm worried that I don't have anything Historically Accurate enough to play.

None of my corsets are front-lacing, and don't know how to make mead with semi-stolen honey, like my little sister, or spin & dye & knit yarn like my older sibling...

I can wear skirts and gather firewood, and my mending is improving but... I don't know. This is probably an irrational concern, but I'm not even sure how to get my foot in the door!
