Lately I've been reading "Drawdown", by Paul Hawken et al, a comprehensive set of strategies for tackling the climate crisis. Your Cambrian Wildwoods post reminded me of one of the solutions - Silvopasture, from the Latin for 'Forest Grazing'.
Essentially it means proposing to farmers that a portion of land be forested and that their animals freely graze there. It can be extremely flexible - planting trees in existing pasture, thinning down woodland to allow for forage growth, using trees as natural fencing, and more.
It's got good potential for carbon capture, and also for saving farmers money in feed and fertiliser, creating better conditions for livestock by keeping them in the shade, and potentially providing secondary income sources in fruit, nuts, etc.
What do you think of it as a potential avenue for Welsh farming? The focus in "Drawdown" is on cattle farming, but I don't see any reason not to trial it with sheep - especially since it could be spun as a hybrid of both aspects of traditional culture...
("Drawdown" also emphasises peer-to-peer uptake through word-of-mouth, rather than being pushed by outsiders.)
Oh, yes - it's basically what they did at Pontbren. That was a farmer-led initiative - one of the big expenses with sheep farming is having to bring them into barns over the winter and supply all feed, but traditionally they'd have stayed out all year. So these farmers got together and went, "How do we ethically and sustainably reduce this expense?"
What they realised is that they were paying for (a) the government-enforced decision post-WW2 to swap to high-yield breeds of sheep that weren't suited to the Welsh climate and topography (i.e. wet as fuck and mostly vertical), and (b) the decline of traditional hedgerow management and shelterbelts. And so the dream was born.
They contacted the Woodland Trust purely to act in an advisory capacity - they wanted to know which trees would be best, and where. They could take much land out of production, but the beauty of hedgerows and shelterbelts is that they're linear features that replace your fences. That was how environmentalists got on board - we were invited, and we remembered that. We were therefore allowed to do a couple of experiments as it progressed, such as testing the infiltration rates of rain into groundwater rather than run-off and comparing it between hedgerow fields and fence fields. Meanwhile, the farmers replaced their stock with native breeds - I believe mostly Welsh Mountain Sheep, which look amazing:
Tumblr media
Ain't no rain getting in THAT.
Anyway, a few strategically placed shelterbelts and hedgerows later and:
The sheep can now safely stay out all year round, excepting storms
The sheep are actually healthier and have higher welfare standards
Floods have reduced thanks to higher infiltration rates
Soil erosion is reduced so the fields and river are healthier
The farmers have saved money
The farmers are now making extra money, because they started a tree nursery and sell trees as a side project
You can read multiple publications on it here
So yes! Silvipasture is actually a huge tool for the future that we need to be embracing, as is agroforestry for arable farming, and the frustrating/hopeful part of it is, these are tools we used to use. This isn't new knowledge - it's forgotten knowledge that we need to reclaim. But even aside from the immediate benefits, it also has massive implications for resilience in a world with a warming climate, and we need to do it faster.

Émile Bernard, Cueilleuses de pommes à Pont-Aven, 1888, oil on canvas, 75.5 x 61.5 cm.
“Cueilleuses de pommes à Pont-Aven epitomizes Bernard's work of the late 1880s when he was at the apex of his engagement with the most advanced currents in French painting. He was still in his teens and a student at Cormon’s atelier libre in Paris, when in 1887, he and his classmate Louis Anquetin developed the radical pictorial style known as Cloisonism. The young critic Edouard Dujardin coined the term in an article about Anquetin published in the 1 March 1888 issue of La Revue Indpéndante—it referred to the medieval technique of firing ground colored glass in a metal framework that outlined the design. Dujardin noted similarities to the methods of Japanese woodblock print-making, and old French popular woodcuts known as images d’epinal, in which “the artists first trace lines within which are placed colours according to the colour-pattern process” (quoted in B. Welsh Ocharov, Vincent van Gogh and the Birth of Cloisonism, exh. cat., Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto, 1981, p. 24).    Bernard was upset that Dujardin had given Anquetin full credit for this new development without mentioning his own contribution. Bernard maintained that he had arrived at Cloisonism through his study of Japanese prints. Vincent van Gogh, who had known Bernard in Cormon's atelier and was then painting in Arles, noted in a June 1888 letter to his brother Theo that "in the Japanese style young Bernard has perhaps gone further than Anquetin" (LT 500). It was on the recommendation of van Gogh that Paul Gauguin agreed to welcome Bernard in Pont-Aven, the site of the present work, when the young painter traveled there with his mother and sister Madeleine in August 1888. Gauguin initially met Bernard in September 1886, during Bernard's first trip to Brittany, when the aspiring teenaged artist toured the region on foot. At that time, Bernard had carried a letter of introduction from Gauguin's close friend Claude-Emile Schuffenecker, but Gauguin had received him guardedly. This time, however, the two artists got on well. They were now both working toward similar goals and enthusiastically exchanged their ideas. Moreover, Gauguin was attracted to Bernard's sister, who later became engaged to Charles Laval, the painter who had accompanied Gauguin to Martinique in 1886, and who was also in Pont-Aven during 1888. Nancy Mowll Mathews has written, "Gauguin was energized by Bernard’s forceful rejection of the old tenets of naturalism and his desire to found an art based on completely new principles, which Bernard wanted to call pictorial symbolism. Gauguin had preached the same message himself. But even though Bernard was mostly confirming ideas that Gauguin already held, it is surprising how swiftly Gauguin assimilated Bernard's new verbal and pictorial language. A new force had definitely taken hold of the old P Go" (Paul Gauguin, An Erotic Life, New Haven, 2001, pp. 107-108).    The results of these discussions soon became manifest in the work of both painters. In September 1888, Gauguin painted La vision après le sermon (Wildenstein, no. 308), while Bernard during this time completed Cueilleuses de pommes à Pont-Aven, which share outlined forms and even application of color. While Bernard's guiding interests in this painting (and related prints of the period) were largely formal, using radically flat color forms from which even shadows have been removed, there is nonetheless an accompanying symbolism in the autumn apple harvest (used to make the cheap hard cider the artists liked to drink) as a reference to Eve in the Garden of Eden.    On the strength of these striking efforts, Gauguin exhorted Bernard to press forward. In a letter to his young friend dated October 1888, Gauguin wrote, "You hold all the trumps in your hand. With foot in stirrup betimes, you will arrive fully armed and in all the vigour of youth at the moment when the blocked road has been cleared in great part. You are extraordinarily gifted, and painting now, you will undoubtedly arrive" (quoted in M. Malingue, ed., Paul Gauguin, Letters to his Wife and Friends, Boston, 2003, p. 101).”

BB20: Sunday 5 November
Losing Paul is massive for the house. Losing Dylan at the same time merely exaggerates the effect.
Before the double eviction, the house seemed divided cleanly in two. Six housemates on each side, with two housemates per side facing eviction.
Noky and Trish were spared, so their group (with Yinrun, Jordan, Matty and Henry) remains as large as it's ever been.
Tom, Olivia, Jenkin and Chanelle now feel the heat. They anticipate Tom and Olivia facing eviction next, since the other group has strength in numbers, and they're unlikely to target Jenkin and Chanelle, since Welsh people are the best.
Olivia suggests to Noky that she isn't dragged down to Trish's level. That's Olivia telling a housemate who was wildly cheered to avoid association with another housemate who was wildly cheered.
This must seem so strange on the inside. Noky and especially Trish are seen as troublemakers, stirrers, gameplayers. But outside, they're apprently utterly loved. On the inside, Paul was seen as a wonderful guy who happened to irritate people with his pranks - but then he received the worst boos of the series!
Matty and Henry talk about Jordan. Matty asks Henry whether he thinks Matty led Jordan on. Henry says no - but that he feels like Jordan led Henry on.
Henry goes to bed. Henry and Jordan have been sharing a bed, but Jordan's moved all of Henry's things back to Henry's old bed.
Henry lies in bed, eyes open, crying physical tears.
Big Brother is no longer based on Nineteen Eighty-Four. Instead, it's called The Hunger Games. Housemates become tributes, split into different districts. They face each other in the Arena.
Chanelle V Olivia
The tributes must place rocks on a wobbly table. If the table spills the rocks, the tribute responsible loses.
Traitors-style music plays. This is a different show now.
Winner: Chanelle
Matty has lived in a number of electricity-free communities, such as the hare krishnas.
Jordan is grumpy about Matty and Henry having a private conversation about him.
Trish gives very good advice. She points out he has no idea what was said, and he's punishing Matty and Henry based on assumptions.
Tom V Jenkin
The tributes must hold ropes to keep a rock suspended. First to allow their rock to drop below a certain point will lose.
Winner: Tom
Henry, Noky & Matty V Jordan, Trish & Yinrun
The tributes must collect roses. Most roses win.
Winners: Unrevealed
District A wins the Hunger Games. They can choose a teammate to be immune from the next eviction. Tom, Matty, Henry and Noky unanimously nominate Chanelle.
For losing the Hunger Games, District B must choose a teammate to face eviction. Jordan, Jenkin and Yinrun all volunteer to take it.
Yinrun: I am so scared of the eviction every time, and nomination. So the best way to stop being scared is to face it. And I always feel like I'm the minor one in the house. I don't wanna be the person not being nominated because people forget to nominate me. I want to be up because I am part of this show. I take this as an opportunity to me.
Olivia: Yinrun, I want to say, you're not minor in this house. I don't like that. No-one forgets about you, ever. That's horrible to hear you say. And I hope that I've never made you feel that way because, I love having you in the house. So don't ever think that people think that you're not there. 'Cause you are.
It's time to vote. Olivia takes Jordan at his word and nominates him. Jenkin and Jordan nominate each other since they're not close.
Yinrun nominates Jenkin, and finally says someting that's bothered her since the first few days - that his conversations with her get no further than a greeting and then walking away. She cries - whether because of this frustration, or the horror of nominating Jenkin to his face, or both.
So it comes down to Trish. She chooses Jenkin. This is because he wasn't kind to Trish yesterday in the heated conversation that followed the evictions.
And so, on his birthday, Jenkin is put up for eviction.
Trish has become such a protagonist in this show. Loved on the outside, and with loyal friends inside, but the single target of the animosity of the cool kids. Losing Paul has just deepened the certainty with which Paul's friends see her as dangerous and manipulative.
Henry talks to Jordan and they make up. Jordan kept his distance all day, and Henry had a horrible time.
Yinrun apologises to Jenkin, but reiterates that she meant her reason. She would like to change things - to become closer to Jenkin. Jenkin accepts this, hugs Yinrun, and tells her he loves her. A nice moment.
Henry is a wreck in the diary room. He's never in his life been made to feel like he felt when Jordan ghosted him.
And, fine. You got me. You made me feel for him. This posh, Tory, Boris Johnson fan is sad, and it's broken my heart.

HIGNFY's Guest Webterview: Ruth Jones
Tumblr media
HIGNFY: This is your first time on HIGNFY. What's occurring?
Ruth Jones: What's occurring is a lot of nerves, because I'm completely out of my comfort zone. I've been up before to be on the panel and I've always avoided it. It's quite a scary thing, even people I've told I'm doing it have gone "oh my God!", so I'm really scared doing it. I might forget who the Prime Minister is... mind you, the Prime Minister might have changed by then. So yeah, I am quite scared, but kind of excited as well.
HIGNFY: If Paul and Ian were to write a sitcom together what would it be about?
Ruth Jones: I think Ian was born in Swansea so I was just thinking: Gavin and Stacey is this sweet love story between a girl from South Wales and a boy from the London area, so maybe they could do their take on a boy from South Wales and a girl from London.
Or it could be a boy and a boy maybe, a sweet story between those two friends. Or maybe it would be a love story. They say to write about what you know, so it would be nice to see a fictional Ian Hislop and a fictional Paul Merton living together. What do they talk about over their cocoa at night? The minutiae of their lives would be very interesting.
HIGNFY: Tell us about the G20 Ladies Dinner Night - what was your highlight?
Ruth Jones: I think probably the Bakewell tart that Jamie Oliver cooked - it was really fabulous. I did have a fantastic night, I must say, meeting people like JK Rowling. Sarah Brown and Maggie Darling were so lovely - they just seemed like they'd be a really good laugh.
It was just a lovely warm evening, and when Michelle Obama came in it was like a new popular girl at school and everybody was trying to be her friend. It was quite funny watching everybody sidling up to her and just introducing themselves.
And what was nice is that everybody was quite nervous about the night. I thought everybody was going to be putting on this bravado but they were like "oh my God I'm in Downing Street".
The one time I was completely awestruck was meeting Barack Obama: I wasn't expecting to, and he was so massive, he's really tall and I just went really Welsh when I met him. I kind of ended up going, "Can I just say congratulations, it's really brilliant, well done" and gave him a thumbs up. He was so gracious and he bent down (he's so tall he has to bend down to you) and said: "I really will have to learn how to talk like that (said in mock Welsh accent) b-r-i-l-l-i-a-n-t". It was one of those once in a lifetime events.
HIGNFY: Can you give us any indication of what will happen in Series 3 of Gavin and Stacey?
Ruth Jones: Well, this series unlike the previous two is set in the summer, so that will bring a whole new take on Barry, and I think Barry is a beautiful place. See it in the sunshine, it's amazing. The new series will have a different feel to it. As was set up at the end of the Christmas special, Gavin has got his job in Barry so we are going to be spending a little bit more time there... but I'm not going to give you anything.
We wrote the last episode about six weeks ago now, and they filmed us reading through the last episode and I just said to James, "Mr Corden it's been a pleasure". We got emotional. James and I would love to write a film together but I don't think that will happen because we've got other commitments. It's probably good to have a little rest anyway. I think we've got a good relationship so we would love to write together again. I'd love to write a good romcom.
HIGNFY: You've had some great opportunities to dress up in Little Dorrit and Nighty Night. Tell us more.
Ruth Jones:  It's interesting when people go, "I didn't know that was you". I love when that happens. I think it's great to work with the costume designer I work with, Claire Finlay, and it's such a creative thing when you're working out the look. Or if you're with a make-up artist and you're working out the look. Linda's look in Nighty Night was based on a girl in this printing shop in Cardiff who had the telephone/Princess Leia buns.
With the period costumes in Little Dorrit I had a corset made for me. A corset is custom-made and it's a real, absolute skill and a craft to make the thing. Of course everybody is different, but you just feel so fantastic in it. You stand differently, you feel very comfortable because they're made for you, and then you put the dresses on top of that and they're just fantastic. Tess wasn't glamorous but I love Hardy, and because we were filming in Thomas Hardy country I felt I was Joan D'Urberville. It's all about dressing up - you never grow up.
HIGNFY: Tom Jones: what was it like working with him and can he still charm the birds from the trees?
Ruth Jones: I didn't know what to expect. I thought he was going to be, well, he's a superstar isn't he so I thought he was going to have this kind of superstar attitude. He was so down to earth, really still a Ponty boy, but he's got this self-assurance which is so different from cockiness or arrogance. A self-assurance that was so attractive to anybody that was around him. He really did have a magnetic personality.
When he talks he talks with great gratitude for this gift that he has, he's grateful every day for that. There's such humility in that, it's very, very charming. You can see why women fall for him, he's got this little twinkle in the eye, you know, and I think it's a great move that he's gone grey. Grey's the new black.
