#PETE NATION RISE UP!!!!!!!
I think that honestly just by showing up and being his kind self, Pete was doing right by Nat on Christmas Day. Maybe he didn't know what it was like going in, but he kind of let all the aggression slide off his back, the way he does. I think sometimes the guys (read: Richie and Cicero) look down on him for not fighting back or whatever but it's really a strength and it's what makes him good for Nat. She vents by swearing and throwing out his food, which—let's be honest—would be a real dagger to the heart of practically anybody else there. Like imagine Carmy or Mikey or Donna's reaction to Nat behaving that way towards them. The drama! But Pete either gets it, or shrugs it off. Idk. Much to think about!
People need to value my nice Midwestern boy because I view Pete as being the Marcus of the Berzattos, in a way. The way that Marcus has no culinary training, but nonetheless contributes to The Beef team by being naturally curious, loving learning, and being kind, ripples out to the whole team—like I literally believe that you can draw a straight line from Marcus being kind to Sydney about the spilled stock, to Sydney being brusque but kind to Tina about her mashed potatoes. I really REALLY think that behind the scenes, Pete has a similar influence on Nat, and through Nat to the rest of the family. Pete and Sugar have been going to Al-Anon meetings and Nat says that he really likes it—and Carmy says disgustedly, of course he does—but like imagine that from Nat's perspective! It takes a plot of vulnerability to talk in meetings, period, and even more so to do it in front of your partner, so I can't emphasize enough how happy I am that Pete not only shows up but tries to make it as positive an experience as he can for her. And because she's had a positive experience at Al-Anon, she knows to get Carmy into it. And because she does...like...
IT'S ALL ABOUT HOW KINDNESS HAS CONSEQUENCES, OKAY?
Generational trauma yes and cruelty yes and addiction yes but those are not the only things with consequences! you can influence people down the line with kindness too!
PETE!!!!!!!!!!
(this was inspired by another Pete post but i didn't want to add it in the reblogs because it seemed ungodly long and possibly annoying to the op)

HipHop's 50th Anniversary: What 'Culture' are We talking about?
Tumblr media
I was in Elementary School back on Aug. 11th 1973. My family left the West Bronx, but I spent a lot of time w/ my 'big cousins' in the Harlem River Houses. My cousin Mona babysat my brother & I, taking Us everywhere w/ her; including dates. I remember Mona taking Us to 'The Summer Of Soul Concert' in Harlem, & I remember going to a few of those Park Jams in Bronxdale & in Soundview. I think We saw more of King Mario than Kool Herc & Coke La Rock. My oldest brother formally introduced me to HipHop in the Spring of 1977. I remember coming home from School to find his Crew set up in Our Dining Room.
I got my 1st look from the 'Other Side of The Rope', & I was hooked! I wasn't a Rapper (yet), or a Break Dancer, but I had an ear for music. Like a lot of Old School Deejays (& under My brother's tutelage) I cut My teeth on Component Sets & BSR Turntables; rocking Line In switches b4 getting a [real] Mixer... I bought My own DJ Set in 1984 (B2s), & mastered my Craft as a Street DJ, & later in a few NYC Clubs. Most DJs are disciples of [Grand Master] Flash or [Grand Wizard] Theodore; I was more of a disciple of Jazzy Jay & Cut Master DC. We All have Our Unique Features, but EVERYONE went back to School when Jazzy Jeff introduced the 'Transformer Cut', back in 1986. Like a lot of DJs disenchanted w/ 'Gangsta Rap', I split time w/ HipHop's Twin Sister- House Music.
I say all of this, to qualify myself as a 'bonafide Shorty' of 1st Generation HipHop, & a full fledged Member of The New School Era. My point, is to say that 'In The Beginning', there was just The Culture. It didn't have a formal name- but it was being done ALL OVER NYC. I associate the '1520 Sedgwick Avenue' Story of HipHop w/ Afrika Bambaataa; he's The First Person that I remember telling this Story. Disco King Mario predated Kool Herc by years. Herc copied Mario's Style- down to his equipment! King Mario wasn't alone, Pete 'DJ' Jones & Frankie Crocker were dueling On The Radio (WWRL vs WBLS), while DJ Flowers, DJ Spotlight, DJ Smokey, DJ Hollywood, & a number of Club DJs were also mixing it up.
A major argument is whether Disco is connected to HipHop. The Cats up in The Bronx say HELL NO, while the rest of NYC says HELL YES! People need to understand that when We talk about 'Disco', we don't mean 'The Sound' or Studio 54; We mean 'The Disco Fever', 'Harlem World', 'Sugar Hill', & 'The Factory'. The DJs that spun @ these Clubs molded the format that HipHop DJs still follow Today. Kool Herc is credited w/ The 'Merry Go Round'- his mix of Break Beats, but he wasn't the only DJ mixing Breaks or James Brown songs. The Black Spades that were interviewed, speak on King Mario spinning 'Soul Power' & how they chanted 'Spade Power'- as early as 1971. This creates a schism between Bronxdale & Soundview.
Black Americans say HipHop started in Bronxdale, as late as 1971. West Indians- Jamaican- Americans in particular, say it started on Aug. 11th, 1973. Puerto Ricans [Nuyoricans/ Puerto Rocks] say it started between 1975 & 1977, when Afrika Bambaataa incorporated Latino Breakers into 'his' HipHop scene. While there is debate over When & Where in The Bronx it started, EVERYONE AGREES that HipHop was created to Stop Gang Violence. The Culture involves individual expression through Graffiti, B- Boy Style of Dress, & Dance, Spoken Word, & the ability to keep The Party going non-stop. The Original Gangs splintered into Crews that now 'battled' each other w/ Turntables & Mics, on the Dance floor, & w/ Spray Paint Cans (Bombing).
The vernacular of HipHop is based in The Nation Of Islam & The Nation of Gods & Earths, so it's big on Black Power, Black Excellence, & The Traditional Black Family. Both Organizations are Pan Afrikan in their Philosophy, so The Black Diaspora is represented. The same is true w/ The Zulu Nation. Before the rise of The Nation of Latin Kings & Queens, you would find Latino Zulu Kings & Queens- it was All Love! Afrika Bambaataa coined HipHop's 'Mission Statement' of: "Peace, Unity, Love, & Having Fun!", in a song w/ James Brown by the same Name. He also defined the existing '5 Elements' as the fundamentals of HipHop Culture. The Zulu Nation were the unofficial Ambassadors of HipHop; first taking it Downtown, & later taking it Globally... No One questioned Bambaataa's actions.
As We celebrate 50Yrs of HipHop, Afrika Bambaataa's Legacy is tarnished @ best. He has been Radio Silent, since allegations of Child Molestation rose against him 7Yrs ago. Every Move that Bambaataa made is being questioned- Was it a good move for HipHop to go Downtown to SoHo? Did it open the door to the current 'isms' that plague The Culture? It was a Black Specific art form, but it opened itself up to integration w/ Sexual Deviants, Drug Abusers, & White Record Executives. In retrospect, We can see what lured Bam Downtown. I'm curious- is the current manifestation of 'The Culture' Bambaataa's intended goal? It goes against his language, but it's in line w/ his actions.
In the wake of Afrika Bambaataa's 'Fall from Grace', people began questioning his narrative of HipHop. Original B- Boys are still walking The Streets, so it wasn't hard to fact check. DJ Phase has spoke on many Youtube videos under 'The Culture', where he breaks down the Foundation of what became HipHop. According to DJ Phase, HipHop was born on June 7th, 1971- in the Bronxdale Houses. He said that it wasn't organized; Mario simply set up on the grass & spun records. Later that Summer, in July- DJ Phase said that they were more organized w/ more sound & records, so THAT was when Brothers got serious about what they were doing. Disco King Mario did a series of Jams that culminated in the legendary 'Rosedale Park' Jam, that lit up The Bronx & inspired future pioneers.
There is a lot of controversy today concerning the Origins of HipHop. Jason Black, of 'The Black Authority' had the best comment on the subject: "Success has many Fathers, but Failure is an Orphan". As We question the running narrative of HipHop's birth, We also have to question WHO gets Credit for WHAT. No One questions the contributions of Jamaicans, Puerto Ricans, Cubans, Haitians, & Panamanians to The Culture, but the claims being made by Busta Rhymes, Pete Rock, Fat Joe, & John Leguizamo are disrespectful. Busta & Pete Rock assert that Jamaican Culture DIRECTLY INFLUENCED HipHop; Busta says 90%. He goes on to say that Kool Herc brought Jamaican 'Toasting' or 'Ranking' to the Bronx Youth. Fat Joe & John Leguizamo say Puerto Rico contributed 50% to The Culture... They ALL sound ridiculous.
In an effort to get ahead of King Mario predating Kool Herc, people have gone as far as saying that Disco King Mario is [half] Puerto Rican. When it was proven that Mario came from North Carolina, a Story came out that his family migrated to (Jim Crow) North Carolina back in 1912. Mario's Sister says they aren't Puerto Rican- They're North Carolinian & 'Country'... His Mother just liked the name Mario. This effort to remove Black Americans from a Black American genre is confusing. Making a contribution 'to', or an innovation 'of' something, doesn't make one 'The Originator' of it. DJ Phase made a point to elaborate on The Energy behind HipHop, & what inspired it. Our Family from The Diaspora mostly arrived after The Civil Rights Movement; They really don't know what AmeriKKKa was like before 1970.
Contrary to what Busta Rhymes, Pete Rock, or Fat Joe may say, HipHop begins w/ The Black Spades. As a boy in Harlem, I remember how revered The Black Spades were. They were respected, but I didn't understand why... Before The Black Spades, Blackfolk in The Bronx were being victimized by Whitefolk; 'Authur Avenue' Italians, in particular. According to The Black Spades, they couldn't go ANYWHERE w/o being attacked, so they organized & struck back. The Black Spades- essentially Black Teens, didn't just beat those Racists back; they opened up The Bronx for EVERY Black Person, giving them The Right of Autonomy. That Energy or Spirit of Revolution was celebrated in Song & Dance, & King Mario was The Conductor.
Kool Herc got to see King Mario & The Black Spades @ 'The Tunnel'. He heard the Breaks & saw how the Black Spades reacted... He heard 'Spade Power!'. Herc himself said that he analyzed what 'they were doing' & came up w/ The Merry Go Round. That, is an innovation. Herc never said that he introduced Toasting to those Baby Spades; in fact, Herc admitted trying to play Jamaican Music, but The Crowd didn't take to it. If Busta & Pete Rock were right, We should have some Reggae among familiar Beat Beats. All of these Cats talk about 'Culture', but they just sound ignorant. A 'Culture' is defined as: 'The sum total of Social Life'. If West Indian (i.e. Jamaican) and/or Latinx (i.e. Puerto Rican) Culture plays such a major role in HipHop, why did ALL of them adopt Black American Social Mores? Kool Herc admitted that he was clowned when he arrived in The Bronx; he thought Cowboy Boots were cool.
If we're going to run w/ the: 'Kool Herc is The Father of HipHop' Story, Coke La Rock should @ least be mentioned. He is credited w/ being The First Emcee. He was Herc's Partner. Busta & a literal Legion of Yardies want to coronate Herc as 'King of HipHop', but it was Coke La Rock that transformed 'Clive' into 'Kool Herc'. Clive DIDN'T KNOW THE CULTURE. Coke La Rock took him down to 125th Street, showed him what to buy, & how to sport it. Somehow, Coke La Rock was written out of the narrative. Again, Bambaataa started this. Another issue w/ Herc being hailed as 'The Father' of HipHop, is how easily he Bowed Down to U- Roy. Herc referred to him as 'his King'. Big Respect to U- Roy, I- Roy & ALL the Pioneers of Ska, Reggae, Lover's Rock, Dub Poetry, & Dancehall! That said, Black Americans BOW TO NO ONE! This is a Problem.
When We talk about Culture, HipHop embodies The Spirit of Revolution. Lay it out on the Black American Timeline, & it's a natural transition; from Work Songs, to Ragtime, to Jazz, to Rhythm & Blues, to Soul & Funk, to HipHop. It's the tireless spirit of Black Liberation in AmeriKKKa. Where does Jamaican or Puerto Rican 'Culture' fit in? They were 'Lovers, not Fighters'. We were Angry! What were they angry about? They were in America- Everything was 'Irie'! When DJ Phase was asked about this [Kool Herc] narrative, he cut to The Chase & said that this narrative gives Whitefolk a 'lane of claim' to Our Culture. It was Too Black, Too Strong, but it's been watered down. When We raise Our Heads, We will see that the people claiming ownership of Our Culture, are the same people representing Us in Government. They are the ones allowing Benign Neglect to continue. They also represent Us 'On Screen', but they rarely depict Us in a dignified manner; We're either Ghetto, or Cowards.
While We're on the subject of 'Culture', let's point out how the level of deviance & violence has risen w/ the number of Jamaican & Puerto Rican Rappers. Boogie Down Productions gets Full Credit for setting off the 9mm talk. Just- Ice's 'The Original Gangster of Hip Hop' was just plain Raw... Also, B- Girls didn't dress like or behave like Dancehall Girls; compare Shante, Lyte, & Latifah to Lil Kim, Nikki Minaj, & Cardi B. White Record Executives, like Lyor Cohen, have rerouted HipHop's 'messaging' to target Suburban Whitefolk eager to hear about 'Ghetto Life'. Today's Artists have been set up lovely by those who came before them, but I wonder if the New Jacks know The History? Do they know what it took for Us to maintain this? Cats had to show restraint, because Authorities were just waiting for Us to mess up. U can literally count the # of times U heard the N- Word b4 NWA... Do they know Themfolks tried to shut Us down in 1882; leading to the 'New School/ Hardcore Era' that started in 1983 w/ T- La Rock & Jazzy Jay, Run-DMC, & LL Cool J?
Truth be told, The Park Jams faded out by 1986- 1987. The Crack Wars began to make large gatherings dangerous. The 1st Crack Dealers (in My Hood) were The Dreads, who sold out of Weed Spots. The 'Rude Boys' weren't concerned w/ 'protocol', so things got Hot pretty quickly.... I understand that there is an effort to make HipHop EVERYONE'S genre, but it isn't; not anymore than Motown or Bebop. The World is welcome to enjoy HipHop, but make No Mistake- it's a Black American genre that just happens to be globally appreciated & adopted by many. That said, notions of people like Kool Herc, or Eminem being the 'Father' or 'King' diminish the effect that those 'Baby Spades' had on The Original Concept. We can appreciate their contributions, but HipHop Culture is bigger than them. It has a purpose, & it's NOT making Non Indigenous Blackfolk wealthy.
It was a youthful expression of Black Power & Creativity, but outside forces have turned it into a Golden Goose that only benefits White Record Execs & their Proxies. We treated Her like a Debutant, but She has been reduced to a Crack Whore that EVERYONE can get a piece of. Young Family has to go back to The Root. A Race War is looming, & i'm not sure that their music is up to task. Most of today's Artists are more concerned w/ their 30 pieces of silver, than The Culture it represents. Cats like Busta & Fat Joe aren't concerned, they're taking the money & running. Fat Joe wasn't even a Rapper back in The Day, he was a Stick up Kid; so he's always been about the 'Vic'. Big Pun on the other hand, was The Real Deal... HipHop has become symbolic of Black American Courtesy- We say: "have some", & Our 'guest' proceeds to help themselves to Everything. NO ONE is allowed to be more than a guest in the genres of Jamaican & Latinx Music, so why do they expect ownership in Black American Music?
When We talk about HipHop Culture, We need to remove All the noise in The Room. ANYONE making a claim to Our Culture should be Checked quickly. This 'Back to School Party' Story doesn't make sense! It's supposed to be inspirational, but it's narrated like just another Party. What's so special about it? What exactly motivated Herc's Sister to have this Party, several weeks before School started? How does this 'Party' spark a Movement? Compare it w/ HipHop being a Celebration of Black Youth in The Bronx [dramatically] winning their fight against White Supremacy & their Right of Autonomy- An UNAPOLOGETIC DISPLAY of Black Power. There was a REASON why NYPD left Mario & the Black Spades Deejays alone. When they were 'Jamming', The Black Spades weren't beating down White Racists... No disrespect, but Immigrant Family weren't Here, so they don't know what sparked this Movement.
The Original Concept of HipHop is rooted in stopping Gang Violence. It was a creative alternative to the death & destruction that We brought on each other. The current version of it is so far removed, it's almost unrecognizable. Today's manifestation is literally a Death Cult that offers little to no benefit to The Artist. White Executives seem convinced that it's only about Beats & Rhymes, but the Crap being presented is vulgar & cookie cutter; which defies HipHop's demand for Originality. After 50+Yrs, it's apparent that HipHop is best represented when it's Culturally connected to the Experience of Black American Life. EVERYONE ELSE is a House Guest & should behave accordingly.

For day 2 of this Hatchetverse series thing, here's part of the sequel to You Could Call This Luck that I've been trying and failing to finish. Turns out plotting a thing about time travel with multiple POVs and timelines is hard.
To avoid confusion: in this particular timeline, (most of) the events of the musicals didn't happen. Time Bastard did, though, because we all know Ted can't catch a break.
(Also sorry for the long post - I don't usually post fic like this directly to Tumblr, but since this is unfinished I didn't want to put it on Ao3 just yet)
*
Pete Lauter sits at the desk in his science classroom at Hatchetfield High School, trying to finish the last of the week's marking. His eyes are dry from staring at his tablet screen, and the hum of the heating units is starting to get on his nerves. His students' lab reports all blend into one after a while - most of them are clearly written by AI. Getting teenagers to write anything as unexciting as a lab report on their own these days is almost impossible. He's not sure why the school still requires it, but then who is he, a mere teacher, to question the relevance of the national curriculum? Only the guy who sees first-hand how badly it works for his students.
Pete doesn't hate his job, most of the time, but it can get exhausting. This particular evening, he's ready to go home, heat up yesterday's leftovers - maybe make a hot chocolate, why not? - and enjoy the Friday-night peace and quiet. Theo will be out somewhere with his friends, and Steph's away on highly-classified work business. It's the perfect time to finally start that sci-fi novel that's been sitting on his bedside table for weeks. He's craving some decent, interesting writing that isn't the work of a teenager or a robot.
Sounds like a plan, he thinks, saving the report he's been working through and switching the tablet to sleep mode. He'll get the last of the marking done on Sunday night. For now it's future-Pete's problem.
He pulls on his jacket - his favourite, the one with the elbow patches that Steph bought for him last Christmas - and is about to pack the tablet away when the screen blinks into life again.
Ruth Fleming's icon (a photo from her honeymoon in Europe, Ruth and her wife smiling in front of a clear blue sky) flashes onto the screen. It's no surprise that she's still at work - drama club starts in an hour, and she has rehearsals to direct. Pete sighs and taps the icon, hoping she isn't about to ask him to help out again.
'Hey Ruth,' he says. 'I was just about to head home - do you need something?'
Ruth sounds a little out of breath, the way she always does when she's anxious.
'Pete, thank god you're still here. You need to come to the north wing staffroom, now. It's your son.'
Pete freezes. 'Theo?'
'Of course it's Theo. Do you have another son? Look, I don't wanna worry you, but he's hurt. You should come quick.'
'What do you mean, hurt?' Pete asks, panic rising. What is Theo even doing in school, on a Friday night? Something stupid and dangerous, clearly, if he's managed to hurt himself.
Pete swings his backpack onto one shoulder, carrying the tablet in his free hand as he rushes out of the room. He doesn't bother to lock the classroom door.
'How badly? Like, ambulance bad?'
'I don't know. I don't think so. But he's talking crazy.'
He's talking, Pete thinks, okay. He feels bad for thinking it, but he's not 100% convinced this isn't just Theo pulling a prank. He wouldn't put it past his son to do this kind of thing for attention. Theo Lauter is a lot of things, but a well-adjusted teenager doesn't seem to be one of them, no matter what Pete and Steph try.
Ruth knows that, of course, and the worry in her voice is making Pete worry too. She'd see through a typical Theo prank pretty easily. Which means this is probably real.
'I'm on my way.' He tells Ruth. 'I'll be five minutes.'
He hangs up and races down the corridor, cutting through the courtyard to get to the North Wing. The staffroom is upstairs, in the English and Languages corridor. When he gets there, the door is wedged open. Ruth is by the sofa, trying to comfort a teenage boy who looks a lot like his son.
But there's no sign of Theo's trademark denim jacket or band t-shirt. This kid is wearing a white shirt, suspenders, and bowtie, all stained with - Pete realises in horror - a concerning amount of blood. Instead of Theo's ponytail, this kid has his hair down, shoulder length, pinned back to keep it out of his face. And this kid is wearing glasses, with a crack across one lens.
Theo has his mother's eyesight. He's never needed glasses in his life.
Either Theo's pranks have reached a whole new level of elaborate, or this is not Pete's son at all. This kid looks more like-
Well, he looks more like him. Like Pete himself, when he was 25 years younger.
Not for the first time, Pete considers that he really needs to move his family out of Hatchetfield. Only in this messed-up town would something like that even be a possibility.
The kid notices him standing in the doorway, and his eyes go wide behind his cracked glasses. Then he says something that disproves neither the actual-time-travel theory nor the Theo-pulling-a-prank one, but spooks Pete either way.
'...Ted?'
*
Agent Stephanie Lauter is in a highly classified meeting at the PIEP HQ when the smartwatch around her wrist starts to buzz.
She glances at it, annoyed, and sees her husband's icon blinking at her. Pete knows she's busy today. He wouldn't call unless it was something urgent. He's one of the only contacts who can call her through the HQ's high tech digital barrier system.
Maybe it's just an accident. She swipes the icon away. If it's urgent, he'll call back.
She waits for a pause in General Lee's presentation, then raises a hand.
'I'm sorry, sir. My husband is trying to call me - I think it's urgent.'
'Well, you had better take it then,' Lee says, with his characteristic earnestness. No matter the situation, the old General has a way of always seeming that he knows more than anyone else about what's going on. It's a little disconcerting.
He waves towards the door. 'Good luck, Agent Lauter. I hope your family are all safe and well.'
She thanks him, apologises again, and leaves quickly. Outside the meeting room, a security guard in a bulletproof vest watches her pace anxiously up and down the corridor as she returns Pete's call.
'Steph,' he says when he picks up. There's an anxious note in his voice that she does not like the sound of. 'Sorry, I know you're at work. Are you busy right now?'
'It's fine,' she says. 'What's wrong?'
'It's Theo,' Pete says, then pauses. 'Well, no, it's not Theo. At least he says he's not, and I think he's telling the truth. I... I don't really know how to explain this, Steph. It's gonna sound crazy.'
'Breathe, babe,' Steph says, because Pete is talking at about a hundred miles an hour now. 'I work for PIEP. I can cope with crazy.'
'Okay.' Pete says, taking a breath. 'Okay.'
'Is Theo alright?'
'Yeah. At least I hope so. He's at his friends, probably. I'm at school, and there's a kid here that looks like him. Ruth thought it was Theo, and he's covered in blood - not hurt, thank god, just covered in it - so she called me. But it's not. Not Theo, I mean.'
'What? Who is it?'
'I think it's me.'
To anyone else, in any other context, those words wouldn't make sense. Pete is a 41 year old man, and their son is 16. It would be insane to mistake one for the other. Not to mention that Pete is Pete. This kid that's shown up covered in blood can't possibly also be him. One person can't possibly be in two places at once.
But in Hatchetfield, anything is possible. And then, on top of that, there's the Spankoffski Effect.
Steph has often wished she could tell Pete more about the work she does for PIEP. About the data that shows his brother Ted's disappearance, back in 2019, wasn't just an unexplained tragedy but a large-scale temporal incident affecting multiple universes. Pete doesn't even know that there are multiple universes. It would probably break his little nerd heart if he knew she wasn't telling him.
Nor does Pete know about how, the day she told the now-retired General MacNamara that she and Pete were engaged, his congratulations came with a warning:
'By all means, marry a Spankoffski if you wish, Miss Lauter. But a word of advice. I'd strongly suggest you don't take that name, and don't give it to your children.'
When she asked him why, he'd told her that was classified. It wasn't until she graduated from training that she first heard about the Spankoffski Effect, and put two and two together.
In every timeline known to PIEP researchers, something with the power to sever a person from the flow of time itself has an interest in - no, more like an obsession with - Pete's brother, and possibly his entire family.
She's not sure she could tell her husband that part even if she had clearance.
And now Pete's younger self has appeared at the school where he teaches. Steph does not like the sound of that at all.
'You're sure it's not Theo pulling a prank? I wouldn't put it past him.'
'If it is, he deserves an oscar. And this kid has my phone, Steph. From years ago. With my medical alert details, everything. I don't think Theo would go that far.'
Probably not, no, but she wants to be absolutely sure. 'Have you called Theo? Checked where he is?'
'Shit,' Pete says, then catches himself for swearing in front of a student. 'I mean, uh, shoot, no. I should have done that.'
She tries adding Theo to the call they're already on. The line rings out, so she tries again. No answer.
'Steph, if you're calling him, I can't hear it ringing. I don't think this kid has Theo's watch.'
A message appears on Steph's watch screen:
< Fuck off, mom, I'm busy :) >
'Well,' She says, wondering briefly about nature and nurture and whether it's some failure of parenting that turned her son into such a little shit, 'our son just messaged me. Unless he can do that with only his mind, I don't think he's with you.'
'Okay,' Pete says. Then, 'shit.' He doesn't catch himself this time.
Shit is right, Steph thinks. 'Wait there. Keep the kid calm. Stay calm yourself, okay? I'll come to you.'
She doesn't tell him she's planning to bring PIEP agents with her, but he's probably figured that out already.
'Aren't you in DC?'
'Yeah, so you'll have to hold out for a few hours. Anything weird happens - anything else weird - you call me straight away, okay?'
'Okay. Yeah. Love you.'
'Love you too.'
Steph hangs up. She pinches the bridge of her nose with one hand and groans, wondering why she never had the sense to move her family out of Hatchetfield.
Would that have helped, though? If something from the Black and White is after Pete, couldn't it find him anywhere, if it wanted to?
The security guard is staring at her.
'Everything okay, ma'am?'
'Yeah,' she says. 'I'm fine. Just - don't ever marry a Spankoffski, no matter how cute he is.'
The guard blinks, clearly baffled.
'Um... right.'

TOP GUN / Icemav fic recs part 3
Good morning aviators, I am here with yet more fic recs! As always, I've tried not to repeat authors in the below, but if there here then I would also recommend opening their profile and checking out the rest of their works :D
Rec list 1 here
Rec list 2 here
now it's us https://archiveofourown.org/works/45161386 by @icemav86
“There was nothing to say, no alternatives, so Maverick dragged Ice to his bedroom and did his best, that day and until Ice left with his packed duffel over his shoulder, to show Ice how he felt about their impending separation, to communicate I need you, I’ll miss you, will you miss me? in every touch and gasp and moan. All of that went unsaid, though, Ice leaving on a warm spring morning with little more than a chaste kiss and a mutual agreement to keep in touch.” After three months apart, Maverick and Ice reconnect.
Love the comparison here between Mav feeling free in the sky and grounded with Ice. The boys use their words!! Very good and hot get together (properly) fic.
Love etc. https://archiveofourown.org/works/34701868 by @m-madeleine
A hospital visit and progress, of sorts.
Developing relationship and quiet moments where the two of them are figuring each other out – I adore how this author writes them.
Working on Nathan Hale’s Eulogy https://archiveofourown.org/works/47643871/chapters/120085639 by @lambourngb
The last words of Nathan Hale were inspiring to the generations that came afterward, but they were considered apocryphal by scholars. Propaganda that was repeated over and over again meant to keep a nation fighting for its freedom and independence. At the same time, the truth slipped away into a place where the living would never know it, and the dead were beyond caring. He wondered what his own final words would be; Thomas ‘Iceman’ Kazansky, COMPACFLT, a great naval officer, the second-best pilot, and a decent man. He hoped they would be ‘I love you’ to Maverick, but he was worried it would end up being ‘I’m sorry’ instead. [Tom has to find a way to break the news of his diagnosis to his wingman and partner, Pete.]
Get your tissues ready for this one!! I did in fact cry reading it. The emotions and the build and development of the icemav relationship through this gentle ending is so very satisfying.
leave a tender moment alone https://archiveofourown.org/works/44548714/ by vulcanx
Five times Maverick walks in on others in compromising positions and one time someone walks in on him kissing his husband.
Very classic 5+1 that I did enjoy!! The +1 icemav has me INCREDIBLY soft, I am such a sucker for the two of them being able to live and love in the open, which this fic amply provided 💖
The good part makes everything else incidental https://archiveofourown.org/works/48098077 by @adevotedreader
What Tom had not expected was that despite the exhaustion, the bloat from steroids, the soreness from surgery and radiation, and the mental exhaustion of just staying alive, he could still look at Maverick and feel the tendrils of arousal spark to life in his mind. The spirit was willing though the body had no hope of rising to the occasion. And, more shockingly to Tom, Maverick still felt attracted to him.
The two of them figuring out how to love and live even with everything that has happened to them!! Very soft and tender, very full of big feelings 💖
newsworthy https://archiveofourown.org/works/48089791 by @gracedbybattle
The Honorable Thomas Kazansky, SECNAV, retired from his post Saturday, June 11th, following a well attended ceremony in Alexandria, VA. Before departing, he was kind enough to impart a few words with Variety on his compelling career and enduring legacy.
Outsider pov and social media fic!! Two of my most beloved things to see in fics, all smashed up together. I very much enjoyed the look at what our main characters might look like to those outside what we know of them. The whole fic being in italics is a bit killer on my eyes, but it’s worth persevering through!
Running on Empty https://archiveofourown.org/works/46914424/chapters/118176517 by @wordsonamission
Maverick has spiraled down to a very low place. Although he was cleared of wrongdoing in the accident that caused Goose's death, he still feels that he bears responsibility for the tragedy. He's ready to leave the Navy to keep from hurting anyone else when Slider finds him hiding in an off-base bar and drags him back to the housing unit he's been sharing with Iceman during Top Gun. Maverick has a breakdown and Ice and Slider try to put the pieces of Maverick's broken heart back together. Maverick and Ice are also dancing around feelings that they're afraid to address. Maverick is left with a huge choice: does he stay in the Navy or start a new life as a civilian? Chapter one fills in the gap in the movie starting where Charlie tries to tough-love Maverick into flying again and Maverick going to see Viper at his house. Chapters two and three follow the plot of the rest of the movie.
Mav whump my beloved!! He’s definitely going through it in this fic, but he’s got some external support and love that helps him through the roughest parts. A really good dive into what Mav’s headspace might have been looking like immediately after Goose’s death, with a solid icemav relationship that shows their steady beginnings.
(I Love You) A Bushel and A Pallet https://archiveofourown.org/works/27142859/chapters/66285392 by @boasamishipper
"Only you, Mitchell," Ice says, "could possibly manage to get a concussion in a fucking Costco."
Domestic icemav my beloved. This author writes them so wonderfully, the dialogue and the set up for the fic are absolutely perfect and a real treat to read.
Rivalry https://archiveofourown.org/works/11851326 by thedevilchicken
Ice has always liked to be the best at everything he does.
Ice figuring out what he wants and how to love and what competition means when you’re also in love with your rival.
time = distance ÷ speed https://archiveofourown.org/works/36308572 by omnidirectional
Maverick hasn’t seen Iceman in years. But inevitably, they always cross paths again sooner or later. Five (plus one) potential timelines in which Maverick meets Iceman again 35 years later; some more on the comical side, others less so. Or, a pre-emptive strike: Six scenarios I’d prefer to see than whatever the actual sequel turns out to be. (If it ever comes out.)
WHEN I SAY I CRIED. As the summary suggests, this is a 5+1 focused on possible ways Top Gun: Maverick could have gone. The way the author ties each (tragic, comedic, wistful, ridiculous, heart-rending) of the 5 times into the +1 is genuinely awesome and I love how it plays on the 5+1 format. This was one of the first icemav fics I read and oh boy was it a doozy of an introduction to this ship!!

minnie's Very Good icemav fic rec list!
icemav is such a massive ship but its hard to find fics for it :((

(this list isnt definitive i have not read a lot, i know there are good ones I missed pls tell me If u have any good recs!!)
fics by @boasamishipper
when i see your face (oneshot, 1k+)
In which Maverick Mitchell wakes up from surgery, high on painkillers, and hits on his husband.
sweet! very cute! maverick rly is a dumb dumb boy
Word on the Street (oneshot, 1k+)
Sharon looks down at her wedding ring and says a prayer for the handsome Navy pilot that’s heading their way. He’s got no idea what he’s in for. / Or, Iceman and Maverick versus the Real Housewives of Fallon, Nevada.
look i also know nth about housewives but this is adorable and hilarious and sometimes we need an outsider pov, est relationship btw!
baby, baby i'd get down on my knees for you (co-written with @academicgangster or simplecoffee on ao3, multi-chapter, 18k)
Or, the Wooing of Iceman Kazansky by a Very Smol Mr. Darcy
(Five times Maverick proposed to Iceman, and one time Iceman accepted.)
OH M,YGOD YOU DONT UNDERSTAND THIS FIC MAKES ME LOSE MY MIND AN DIE AND CRY AND ITS SO SWEET AND ADORABLE AND I MISS THEM SM HGBGKLDS
between the lines of fear and blame (oneshot, 1k+)
extreme whump extreme, most icemav fics hurt mav and i think mav deserves a little better. just a little. this is good also
Out of all the things Maverick had expected to eventually kill him — getting caught in someone’s jetwash, being shot out of the sky, his plane’s engine exploding — getting shot by one of his students in a civilian bar didn’t even make the top ten.
He never expected Ice to take a bullet for him, either.
There's a first time for everything.
fics by @susiecarter
and gamble for the sun (one-shot, 1k+)
It's like this: Maverick and the Iceman make bets, sometimes.
OH MY GODDD OH MY GOD THE TENSION THE IDIOTS IDIOT OT LIKE 3K ITSLOVELY AND SO SO GOOD PERFECT TENSION AND EVERYTHING (in my notes I wrote that they write rly good summaries I just wanted to tell you that)
A Shared Cup (one-shot, 7k+)
hard 2 exp but its a soulbond au and I LOVE THOSE I LOVE THOSE I LOVE THOSE READ THIS NOW AND GO INSANE W ME
It was only a training exercise.
It was only supposed to be a training exercise.
fics by @compacflt
this isnt like a thing about the fics but on ao3, the profile says commander of the pacific fleet (wouldn't that be hilarious if the actual compacflt were on ao3? national security hazard) and that's possibly the funniest thing I've read today
Easier Said Than Done (100k+, series)
"So you just wanna be the best at everything, huh?"
"Yes," Kazansky says seriously, then, confused, squints at him. "Don't you?"
"Of course not," Maverick says. "I just wanna be the bestpilot."
"Huh," says Kazansky, wondering if there's a difference betweenMaverickandMitchell. "Maybe you shoulda stayed at TOPGUN, then."
(Or: Tom Kazansky rises through the ranks while trying to stay a good man. If he ever was one to begin with.) (When We Get Around To Talking About It, 65k+)
"We can start here, I guess. If we're talking about us," Pete says. "Nineteen-eighty-six. The first thing I thought, when I saw you in that O-club, was: Iceman isoff-limits.Capital O, capital L."
Despite himself, despite the fear, Tom laughs a little. "Oh, yeah? Why's that?"
"Well, first off, we were competition. And yeah, you were attractive, but then you opened your mouth and I swear. You were just an asshole. Goose is trying to introduce you to me and here I am thinking about how much of an asshole you are. Shut up about Cougar, asshole."
"It was supposed to be a friendly competition!"
"Yeah, right. So that's what I was thinking: he's attractive, clearly doesn't know how to talk to other men, might be into the proposition if I framed it the right way. But he's an asshole, so this competition is just gonna befriendly." Pete pauses. Then he says, "Ice, you wanna get married?"
And that's how they start talking about it.
(Or: they finally get around to talking about it. And Maverick's got a couple extra memories.) (Debriefing (& Other Stories), 60k+)
look its rly long. but this whole series is wonderful. if ican ever print out one top gun fic to have and to hold irl I would buy more paper and print both of these ones. absolutely lovely and it doesn't feel long its just a good good good time and the classic icemav fic
ALSO HONOURABLE MENTION
Kings of the Air (@fabula-unica, 20k+)
Fighting and fucking: two things he did extraordinarily well. How could he have known what the effect would be when you combined the two?
ABSOLUTE HERITAGE FIC EVERY ICEMAV SHIPPER HAS TO LIVE AND BREATHE THIS FIC OH MY GODDD SO LOVELY SO SO SOS LOVELY read this fic. it has been waiting 12 years for you
ao3 etiquette is in order, if you liked it, leave a kudos and a comment :D I hope you enjoy these fics as much as I did !

A retired US Army lieutenant colonel is organizing an armed convoy next week to the Texas border to, he says, hunt down migrants crossing into the US from Mexico. Hundreds of people already say they are coordinating travel plans for the convoy on Telegram as tensions continue to rise between the state and federal government over immigration.
Pete Chambers, the lieutenant colonel who says he was a Green Beret, appeared on far-right school-shooting conspiracist Alex Jones’ InfoWars show on Thursday to outline plans for the Take Back Our Border convoy, which has been primarily organized on Telegram.
“What gets us to the enemy quickly is find, fix, and finish,” Chambers told Jones. “That’s what we did in Syria when we took out ISIS really quick. Now we don’t have the authorities to finish, so what we can do is fix the location of where the bad guys are and pair up with law enforcement who are constitutionally sound.”
While this kind of right-wing chatter doesn’t always amount to anything, on Telegram the main Take Back Our Border channel now has over 1,000 members and is being used as a place to plan and share information about the convoy, as well as three rallies taking place in Texas, California, and Arizona next week. The convoy will reportedly begin on Monday, January 29, and participants currently say they are planning on driving to Shelby Park in Eagle Pass, Texas, where the Texas National Guard is currently in a standoff with the US Border Patrol.
The convoy has been promoted by Texas state representative Keith Self, who appeared on Fox Business to speak about the event and posted a link to a news article from the conspiracy-focused The Gateway Pundit about the convoy on his X account.
In state-specific subgroups for attendees to organize rideshares and other resources, members are outlining their plans about where along the route they will join up with the convoy. The main part of the convoy will begin in Virginia and will make its way through Florida, Louisiana, and on to Texas.
One group member suggested others bring “kits” to the planned rallies so that “if stuff goes down you will be able to protect yourselves and help out.” Another user responded: “I’m in Missouri. I’ll be ready and have my kit full.”
Some Telegram users have compared this moment to the American revolution of 1776.
“There is a point where we are going to have to get our hands dirty,” one member wrote in the Texas group. “I've dealt with MANY bullies in my life, and I've never been able to reason with them. The one universal language bullies understand is when you push them back.”
Another poster shared a quote from far-right figure Jack Posobiec saying the country is on “the verge of civil war with the government,” while one member claimed, without evidence, that the Border Patrol is “letting known terrorists into the US.”
A promotional video for the convoy on the website begins with alarms sounding and the words “invasion alert” flashing over what appears to be night-vision footage of people crossing the border. The video also calls back to previous convoys, such as the People’s Convoy that rolled into Washington, DC, in 2022 to protest Covid-19 lockdowns. However, the administrators of the Telegram group and the convoy’s website are careful to say this will be a peaceful protest and that only “law-abiding citizens” are welcome. The convoy’s website says it’s looking for everyone to join the effort, including “all active and retired law enforcement and military veterans.”
The convoy is being organized as tensions over the US–Mexico border escalated this week, when the US Supreme Court lifted an order by a lower court and sided with President Joe Biden’s administration to rule that Border Patrol agents could remove razor wire installed by the Texas National Guard and state troopers. Texas governor Greg Abbott has defied the ruling as the Texas National Guard and state troopers have continued to roll out wire at Shelby Park on the banks of the Rio Grande in Eagle Pass. Republicans have backed Abbott, who stated on January 24 that the state’s right to “defend and protect” itself against an “invasion” of migrants “is the supreme law of the land and supersedes any federal statutes to the contrary.”
More than two dozen Republican governors, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, and former president Donald Trump have come out in support of Abbot.
“Biden is, unbelievably, fighting to tie the hands of Governor Abbott and the State of Texas, so that the Invasion continues unchecked,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Texas has rightly invoked the Invasion Clause of the Constitution, and must be given full support to repel the invasion.”
“The feds are staging a civil war, and Texas should stand their ground.” Representative Clay Higgins, a GOP congressman from Louisiana, posted on X after the Supreme Court issued its ruling.
The post was shared widely in online communities populated by far-right extremists, including on The Donald, a far-right message board where some of the planning for the January 6 Capitol riot took place.
“There’s no other way to interpret removing a border than outright treason,” a member of The Donald wrote. “The Supreme Court justices who agreed to this deserve to be executed as traitors.” Another added in relation to the judges: “Traitors deserve to die.”
On X on Thursday, the hashtags #CivilWar and #StandwithTexas were both trending.
During the hourlong interview, Chambers blamed migrants for the fentanyl crisis, which he described as “chemical warfare,” and he called the Biden administration the enemy of the people. Jones described Abbott’s January 24 statement as “the new Declaration of Independence.” Chambers told Jones how he was planning to use the same techniques he claims he used while in the US military fighting the Islamic State to target migrants crossing the border. He echoed Abbott, and described the effort as “domestic internal defense.”
Chambers also said that one of the stops on the convoy will be the One Shot Distillery and Brewery in Dripping Springs, Texas, which is owned by Phil Waldron, a former army colonel. Waldron was central to plotting the January 6 insurrection, when he circulated a 38-page PowerPoint presentation to members of Congress that, among other things, called for Trump to declare a state of emergency and seize voting machines. Waldron was listed as an unindicted coconspirator in Trump’s Georgia election-interference case.
And while much of this kind of violent rhetoric is never acted upon, there have been a growing number of incidents beyond January 6 where online comments have been followed up with real-world action, including when a man targeted an FBI office after slamming the agency for searching Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home on Truth Social.
Efforts in Congress to find a compromise on border funding appeared to collapse earlier this week, but yesterday Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell told reporters that talks were still “ongoing.”

200 of my favorite albums that I swear by, from any genre - limited to one per artist. I always wanted to do this since the start of the decade and finally got around to it. Like, I'll totally agree that California NIMBYs are ridiculous and have committed the state to a poorly chosen path, but I don't think you guys appreciate how very explicitly central "a civilization where everyone lives in a small-town environment with direct exposure to undeveloped nature" has been to the California Dream
Like before even the postwar Golden Age buildout under Gov. Brown the Elder that really instantiated this suburban paradise, the prewar boom of LA was very commonly framed – embraced by boosters to draw more residents – in terms of a job-rich city that uniquely didn't have "slum" housing.
(You don't even hear about "slum clearance" – the postwar practice of demolishing blocks at a time and giving the former residents intentions of something better that much anymore, but large areas of downtown-adjacent land in American cities was hyper-dense and low quality tenements or often formerly comfortable-class housing that had been subdivided all to hell)
California had an idiom for "life at high residential density" – the crowded, warrenlike Chinatowns of LA and especially SF since the Gold Rush, chaotically full of improvised enterprise, drug addiction, and murderous gang violence!
In the early 1980s, Long Beach – the industrialized working class shore to the south of LA, kind of its Queens, was like "ha-HA, we have filled this wonderful location at low bungalow density, time to upzone so as to keep this a functional area for working-class life!"
Of course the thing is the 1980s in Southern California went on to feature a massive illegal immigration wave (Cheech Marin's 1987 Born in East L.A. is called that because it's about an American-born bilingual Mexican Angelino experiencing this) which often landed in Long Beach AND the crack- and gang- heavy nadir of South LA-area Black communities.
Which is to say, in actual historical precedent that informs cultural sentiment, dense housing in California (let's talk *Oakland*) consistently means "the white average-Joe neighborhood becomes overrun with inscrutable, addiction-riven, gang-murderous Others"
And the whole environmental stuff – there's a clear line from John Muir and the Sierra Club through Paul Erlich and The Population Bomb to the Bay Area types who want to cap tech jobs or the people who worry about water (or road!) use coming from new development that the way to keep properly stewarding the land without exhausting finite resources was to limit population.
You can work racial or wevs angles too, a lot of the West Coast issues with natives and Chinese workers came from the way that the coast's founding culture really came from a "Free Soil" philosophy, common among smallholders and "mechanics" in the (then-"West"), one of the two strains that went into the Republican anti-slavery stance along Boston moralism (New York, as the major port city of an international economy powered by cotton, was fairly pro-Confederate), that this was supposed to be a country to enable white men's ability to establish self-sufficient petty dynasties of their own, and that indulging all this nonwhite work – creating a national economy oriented around slave-produced agricultural exports rather than white artisan industrial development, Pacific landowners recruiting natives or Chinese in a labor shortage rather than letting white wages rise so the workers could establish their pioneer fortunes – were, fundamentally, taking their jerbs.
And the pastoralism! This was the pleasant climate where the ranch house really blew up, integrating the outdoors and living area. Backyards – and home gardens – were key.
(In a LOT of ways Portland as I came to it at the dawn of the 2010s suddenly reminded me of things I had read about midcentury LA far closer than the one I saw in the 2000s)
Pete Seeger in 1963, "little boxes made of ticky tacky", Joni Mitchell in 1970, "paved paradise and put up a parking lot", these were laments for greenfield development coming before the activist-driven 1970s downzonings that saw that greenfield development was the ONLY way for California to add housing.

Boy's Own (issue ?) YEAR: 1989 CREATED BY: Terry Farley, Andrew Weatherall, Cymon Eckel and Steven Hall LOCATION: London SIZE: A4 WHAT'S INSIDE.... A zine from the last month of the last year of the 1980s.... By this time a gazillion fanzines had been published in the UK since the start of the punk rock explosion, covering a multitude of musical styles that had emerged in its wake. Football fanzines had also established themselves as an integral part of our national game. Boy's Own was started in 1986 by a group of young clubbers who were friends with DJ Paul Oakenfold and right where they needed to be as acid house began to take off in the UK. One of their inspirations was Liverpool fanzine The End, which irreverently mixed up music, football, poetry, fashion, humour, booze, drugs and politics (some of the zine's writers also ended up in indie-dance band The Farm). Each issue of Boy's Own contained a list of "uppers and downers", just like The End's list of "ins and outs". After sampling the club scene in Ibiza and discovering a new euphoria-enhancing drug called ecstasy, the Boy's Own crew became associated with London's first acid house clubs. Andrew Weatherall DJed at Danny Rampling's Shoom, and Terry Farley DJed at Paul Oakenfold's Future night at Heaven. They soon began hosting their own outdoor raves, helping to start a movement that would inspire any number of "Shock! Horror!" headlines in the tabloid press. They eventually formed their own record label and (if I remember correctly) also invented the phrase "it's all gone Pete Tong".... And in a similar way to the first punk zines, Boy's Own reflected the enormous changes in Britain's youth culture and fashion that were driven by house music and ecstasy in the late 1980s. This issue of the zine even includes the acid house equivalent of one of the most iconic expressions of the punk ethos (a picture of some badly drawn guitar chord charts accompanied by the words “THIS IS A CHORD - THIS IS ANOTHER - THIS IS A THIRD - NOW FORM A BAND”) that appeared in the first issue of Sideburns fanzine in January 1977 (although the Boy’s Own crew wrongly attribute it to Mark Perry’s Sniffin’ Glue). The acid house/ecstasy/rave scene was every bit as seismic as punk had been a decade earlier and also inspired a new generation of bands who were influenced by dance music (something that New Order had already pioneered since the early 1980s), the best of which were based in and around Manchester - which became known as Madchester at the time - and was also home to the Hacienda night club, which many people regarded as the epicentre of acid house. Some existing indie bands decided to completely change their sound and join the smiley/baggy/indie-dance revolution - most notably, Primal Scream. Andrew Weatherall's production work on their album "Screamadelica" helped the band to create an influential blend of rock and rave music, especially on the iconic "Higher Than The Sun" - a track that perfectly captured the mood of the era. This issue of Boy's Own features Flowered Up, a London band who managed to make a couple of half decent records while attempting to be the southern equivalent of Happy Mondays and The Stone Roses. Looking through the records in the Boy's Own charts, most of them would sound a bit lame today, with the notable exception of "The Sun Rising" by The Beloved. New releases include "Madchester Rave On - The Remixes" by Happy Mondays, which features a remix of "Hallelujah" by Paul Oakenfold and Andy Weatherall, and a remix of "Rave On" by Paul Oakenfold and Terry Farley. There's also cartoons, readers' letters, lifestyle tips, bouncer horror stories, girl's own nightmares, moody flyers, Viz comic, the Kray twins and much more. It's often true that the pioneers of a scene end up getting pissed off when it goes mainstream, and in an article titled "Paradise Lost", the Boy's Own crew also reminisce about the halcyon days of clubbing before the riff raff started jumping on the bandwagon. Click on the title above to see scans of all the zine's pages.... Andrew Weatherall was one of the greatest DJs of all time, and after his death in 2020, a group of fans created The Weatherdrive: a Google Drive folder containing hundreds of hours of his studio mixes, live recordings and radio shows. The complete collection of Boy's Own fanzines was published in a book called "Boy's Own, The Complete Fanzines 1986-92: Acid House Scrapes And Capers" but it's been out of print for years and I'm not prepared to fork out a fortune for a second hand copy.... my box of 1980s fanzines flickr

Southern Infrastructure Megastructure Gothic
@eightyonekilograms, in a post about why levees and dikes won't save Florida from Sea Level Rise:
dams and levees won't work because southern Florida is a limestone sponge and the water will just come up through the ground— but with a trillion dollars of other people's money to spend, they'll figure out something. That's what real estate investors are banking on, and they are probably correct.
NOAA has a Sea Level Rise map, which you can jack all the way up to 10 feet above "Current Mean Higher High Water", and then scroll around the entire coastal United States to see what gets flooded.
Tumblr media
Pensacola is fine; they know what storm surge looks like from being in the splash-damage radius of every time New Orleans gets fucked.
Tumblr media
St. Pete/Clearwater loses its waterfront, but retains significant infrastructure inland.
Tumblr media
Naples and Cape Coral lose their entire downtowns, but the inland suburban sprawl survives. I guess they'll need to convert some of those tract houses into neighborhood-scale commercial.
Tumblr media
Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and indeed most of Miami-Date and Broward Counties are awash, and become the basis of new coral reefs for the Northern Florida Keys.
But West Palm Beach is okay.
Tumblr media
By Congressional mandate, NASA adapts the Cralwers to work as amphibious vechicles, in order to continue using Shuttle-derived hardware at Pad 39, with the new Sea Launch System rated to withstand salt spray inside the engine bells at launch.
SpaceX stops leasing in Texas, where South Padre Island is completely underwater, and buys up an entire subdivision's worth of now-island land in South Miami. The neighbors won't complain about concrete dust if there are no neighbors!
Tumblr media
Saint Augustine dies, but Jacksonville is like Pensacola, and picks up its skirts to avoid the puddles.
Trillions of dollars of dikes aren't the answer. The solution will be to jack everything up ten feet, from roads to ports to homes. If you can't adapt to life in a saline intertidal wash, you'll move inland.
No, the real issue will be whether they can build a seawall around DC's National Mall and National Airport that won't offend the sensitivities of climate-denying Congresscritters.

KinnPorsche | Episode 12
Kinnporsche episode 12 a treat long awaited. I can’t believe we are this close to the end. Seems so surreal. Too much happened not only between the 3 pairs but in the storyline. My brain is still wrapping it up, and in a few minutes the compulsory rewatch for details shall happen till then let’s dive in the episode because huh why not....
Chay, you did not just drop your completely filled application with personal details into a public dustbin without shredding it. Please, OMG.
KinnPorsche - forever one step forward, three steps back.
Porsche are you seriously listening to a conversation again!!??
Pete looks way to comfortable for someone who has been struck by belt, chained, and shocked
Vegas and his precious little hedgehog
VegasPete Nation rise for you shall have the fruit of your patience...
Porsche the spitfire is back!!!!
I mean please listen to Kinn...Pleaseeeee...
Kinn and Porsche, somehow this fight is so much more angstier than the rest...
Kinn talking back to his father..hmmm consequences consequences
Vegas crying...did not see that one coming.. I thought we are expecting something else... Not the hedgehog nooooooooooo
We have the bi lightining..Its so pretty...
The intimacy of simple touch has achieved a new level..ladies and gentlemen..
VEGAS AND PETE KISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!! and Pete initiated so.....
Vegas smiling into that kiss, likely thinking ahhh that’s what I was talking about Pete.. That grab was HOTTT
Kinn and Porsche have sorted it out!! The bread is really what brought them together!!
Although now does Kinn repeats his suit highly unlikely but then ummm I am so confused??????????
Kinn is impressing Porchay!!! He knows there is no point with his family :p
Kinn cooking with Time and Tay in Porsche’s Kitchen for Porchay is a line I never thought i will be typing
Tay you are forever gorgeous.
Chay the look, the friends, the drinking..The teenage rebellious phase is now live
Kim, sir, every time you piss me off somehow you become even more gorgeous..
Kinn and Porsche that scene, in the end that’s love and isn’t what that what they wanted
I have a strong feeling its Korn who has retaliated and given Porsche’s uncle that picture..timing couldn’t have been more convenient..cmon..  Also that picture was in pristine condition.. and the way his uncle was highly unlikely that he would be taking care of it. (CONSEQUENCE of rebellion Kinn)
Why do you end like this? For the love of God why????????????
I miss Tankhun...and the pool scene. Surprisingly no water bodies in this episode hmmmm
Precap - Gun please take control of yourself will you. Vegas is one slap away from putting a bullet through your head, deservedly so.
PS - When I wrote the title it freaking broke me because only 2 episodes left. I am not ready to deal with the reality of Saturdays without KinnPorsche

Chill Weather In The Coming Days
By JANE OLSON, Omni Reporter
DALLAS -- Cool weather passes by locals this week, and continues to stay chill for the upcoming days.
It's starting to feel like winter in the DFW Metroplex. On Wednesday, it will have a minimum of 38, before rising to 65, according to the National Weather Service.
"It'll stay dry, but more clouds move in throughout the day." says WFAA reporter Pete Delkus.
BEWARE OF FOG AND RAIN!
On Wednesday and Thursday, fog and storms will start to roll in.
"Scattered showers and storms are expected on Thursday," Delkus said. "The highest coverage will be east of DFW. Most of North Texas won't see severe weather, but we can't rule out a strong storm or two with strong winds and hail."
Southeast North Texas will face the most of the storms, but those who will still see the storm should prepare and be ready.
WILL IT WARM UP?
Towards the middle of the week, it will start to warm up and give a break to the cool weather.
On Sunday, it will rise into the 70s, with the high being 74. That's not all, as Tuesday will see a nice 70.
In the days after Tuesday, it will continue to stay at steady 60s and low 70s, according to the National Weather Service.
WHAT MOON PHASES WILL WE SEE?
Tumblr media
According to nineplanets.org, a majority of the week will see a Waning Gibbous. Yet, on Tuesday it will change to the Last Quarter phase.
The Last Quarter only happens on one night, before being followed by the Waning Crescent.

twice to his post leading one of Florida’s biggest cities, is presenting himself as a fresh face for a party that has struggled in three consecutive elections as general-election voters soured on Mr. Trump. He is scheduled to give a speech on Thursday night at the Reagan Library in California.
Supporters of Mr. Suarez announced a super PAC on Wednesday in tandem with his filing, beginning with an initial “six figure” ad buy in three early-voting states: Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada. The committee, SOS America PAC, is starting off on solid financial footing, with almost $6 million left over from its previous iteration.
Its first ad — which opens with a sarcastic “warning” screen reading, “This video contains graphic content that liberals may find disturbing” — shows footage of violent crime and a burning police car, calling this “Joe Biden’s America” and promoting Miami’s declining violent crime rate under Mr. Suarez.
The Republican field has grown to nearly a dozen hopefuls aiming to take on the front-runner, Mr. Trump, who was charged this month in a federal case concerning classified documents. Mr. Suarez is also taking on Ron DeSantis, the governor of his home state, who has consistently been Mr. Trump’s top rival but who is also well behind in available polling.
But Mr. Suarez is little known outside his state, and he is facing emerging allegations of influence-peddling on behalf of a real estate development company.
Mr. Suarez grew up in Miami politics, with his father, Xavier L. Suarez, serving two stints as mayor in the 1980s and 1990s. The elder Mr. Suarez was later elected to the Miami-Dade County Commission, where his terms overlapped with his son’s time in office.
The younger Mr. Suarez served as a Miami city commissioner before being elected mayor in 2017 with 86 percent of the vote. In 2021, he was re-elected with 79 percent of the vote.
While the city’s voters traditionally skew Democratic in national elections, that doesn’t hold true for local elections, and the mayoral post is listed as nonpartisan on ballots.
Nobody has been elected to the White House, or even received a major party’s nomination, directly from a mayor’s office — though Pete Buttigieg of South Bend, Ind., population roughly 100,000, came closer than most in the 2020 Democratic primaries, winning Iowa and placing second in New Hampshire, but slid and dropped out before Super Tuesday.
Miami, with a population of roughly 450,000, gives Mr. Suarez a considerably larger starting point. But the Miami mayoralty is a part-time and largely ceremonial job.
Mr. Suarez can veto legislation and hire and fire the city manager, but he does not have a vote on the five-member City Commission, and in 2018, he failed to persuade voters to give him strong-mayor powers. After clashing with city commissioners, he began to turn away from day-to-day legislative matters.
Mr. Suarez’s national profile began to rise after he became one of the first elected officials to contract Covid in March 2020. He documented his illness in online videos, giving people a peek into a virus that most, at the time, knew very little about.
Later that year, when a venture capitalist floated the idea on Twitter of moving Silicon Valley to Miami, Mr. Suarez replied, “How can I help?” — a response that vaulted him into the tech scene and a broader conversation about how leaders could best market their cities.
He soon emerged as a cryptocurrency enthusiast and darling of tech workers who moved to Miami during the pandemic. Even before the crypto industry descended into crisis last year, critics accused him of being more interested in crisscrossing the country to speak at conferences than tackling the city’s most pressing issues, such as unaffordable housing.
This spring, Mr. Suarez has come under fire over reports that he was paid large sums of money by a company looking for help advancing a luxury condominium project. In a series of articles, The Miami Herald reported that Mr. Suarez had received at least $80,000 to consult for the developer, Location Ventures, and then that the developer had paid him $170,000 “to help cut through red tape and secure critical permits.”
This month, The Herald reported that the F.B.I. was investigating the developer’s hiring of Mr. Suarez.

The boss aka Bruce Springsteen and the E Street band
Bruce Frederick Joseph Springsteen
born at Monmouth Medical Center
in Long Branch, New Jersey,
on September 23, 1949.
His nationalities include hodgepodge
of Dutch, Irish, and Italian descent.
He grew up Catholic in Freehold, New Jersey.
I dedicate the following poem
to aforementioned musician, whose figurative guitar finger kept on the throbbing pulse resoundingly reverberating
across American heartland.
this cautious man (bobby jean) born in the u.s.a.
grownin’ up in the badlands of atlantic city
bonded with blood brothers
felt born to run along backstreets
in brilliant disguise that did cover me
frequently blinded by the light
of the full moon
casting silhouettes against darkness
on the edge of town
which lunar shafts pierced candy’s room,
while immersed in book of dreams
describing better days on a Cadillac ranch
where devils & dust - visible dancing in the dark
celebrating like calendar showered 4th of july
or other glory days in darlington county
even though I ain’t got you.
livin’ in the future
mine hungry heart hankered
and felt like I’m on fire
for you, this fire in me craved human touch
desire - roaring into the ole factory fire
because I wanna marry you
because the night populated
with girls in their summer clothes
each dazzling like 57 channels (and nothin’ on)
in imagination of my american skin
descended from when adam raised a cain
before last to die forecasting kingdom of days
now dwelling in celestial mansion on the hill.
now rightfully claim status of I’m a rocker/ local hero and I’m goin’ down
meeting across the river
if I should fall behind
on the downbound train as living proof
within light of day magic jungleland
policed by highway patrolman i.e. johnny 99
alias johnny bye bye – held up without a gun
defending this lucky town
established on Matamoras banks
from an incident on 57th street
thus celebrated
as local hero every independence day
when, with murder incorporated
firing point blank out in the street
that staccato new york city serenade
from no surrender outlaw pete
originally from nebraska.
it’s hard to be a saint in the city open all night
within my hometown
once my father’s house, now my city of ruins
where tis moot to ask
does this bus stop at 82nd street?
one step up
into the pink Cadillac
hops the ramrod queen of the supermarket
teasing audio dials sans radio nowhere
a red headed woman
racing in the street toward secret garden
to save my love –
with thee angel rosalita (come out tonight)
offering reason
to believe roll of the dice real world
and to prove it all night
from spare parts – shards of roulette wheel
housing souls of the departed
please save my love and stolen car
for sherry darling – that spirit in the night
she’s the one among souls of the departed
no longer stopped by state trooper
precinct based along streets of philadelphia
some crackling like streets of fire
straight time mandate
for those armed to the teeth
along tenth avenue freeze-out.
requiem per terry’s song – what love can do
accompanied by e street shuffle
performed in somber tones
rumbling down thunder road
for souls of used cars
two hearts crushed
along this hard land
for: the ghost of tom joad
the last carnival homage
to wild billy’s circus story
the price you pay when you’re alone
working on a dream
now wreck on the highway.
we take care of our own from youngstown
when heading of to the promised land
the rising distant mystical eden
where you can look,
(but you’d better not touch)
espying the river of salvation
joining eternally the ties that bind
a tunnel of love
or like the wrestler
pinning opponent tougher than the rest
like laborers working on the highway
chiseled like this hard land!
