HELL’S KITCHEN, CLINTON CHURCH – DAY
As you step out of the church, the bells ring in the distance, and your thoughts focused on the errands Sister Maggie entrusted to you, you almost miss a step and stumble forward. A startled yelp escapes your lips as you regain your balance, feeling a surge of embarrassment wash over you. At that moment, your eyes dart toward the nearby bench, and your breath catches in your throat.
There he is, Matthew Murdock, sitting with his cane resting against the fence gate. His neatly tailored grey tuxedo and tinted red glasses hint at a man who exudes confidence. Father Paul Lantom joins him on the bench, taking a seat beside him.
Realizing you've stumbled upon an intimate conversation, you instinctively begin to back away, hoping to go unnoticed. But Father Lantom's voice cuts through the air, calling your name, and you wince, feeling caught in the sudden attention. Reluctantly, you stop in your tracks, anxiety pulsing through your veins.
Father Lantom's gaze meets yours, and he motions for you to approach. The mixture of concern and curiosity in his eyes only heightens your unease. Gathering your courage, you cautiously step forward, bracing yourself for this unexpected encounter.
Father Lantom's voice holds a touch of warmth as he addresses Matthew. "I'd like you to formally meet Matthew Murdock, the one you've been asking me about," he says, his words punctuated by a friendly smile. Matthew, ever casual, interjects, "Matt is fine. You've been asking about me?"
Your heart races in your chest as you come face-to-face with the man you've heard whispers about, the enigmatic figure who walks the line between justice and darkness. The knowledge of his secret identity sends a surge of adrenaline through your veins, intensifying the already charged atmosphere. You struggle to find your voice, transfixed by his presence, unable to utter a single word.
Meanwhile, Matt's heightened senses pick up on the rapid thud of your heartbeat, an anomaly amidst the ambient sounds of the city. He furrows his brow, curiosity piqued by the accelerated rhythm that betrays your nervousness. His keen instincts compel him to analyze every detail, searching for answers to the enigma before him.
Father Lantom, sensing your apprehension, redirects the conversation. "Allow me to introduce you," he says, gesturing towards you. With a gentle push, he prompts you to step closer. The world seems to slow down as you find yourself standing in front of Matthew Murdock, nerves tightening your grip. You spot the wound on the right side of his temple, fresh and red.
Matt's reddish-tinted glasses hint at eyes that he cannot see, yet his unsteady gaze feels piercing and perceptive. His voice carries a hint of curiosity as he speaks to you. "You've been asking about me?" he repeats, his tone inviting.
You muster the courage to respond, but instead, an odd noise escapes your lips—a mixture of surprise, nervousness, and the jumbled thoughts swirling in your mind. Father Lantom, concerned, leans in and asks, "Are you okay?"
You manage a nod, although your emotions remain tangled and your words trapped. It's an overwhelming moment, standing before the enigmatic man who walks a path shrouded in darkness.
"It's nice to meet you," you manage to say, your voice wavering slightly with nervousness. "Uh, I have to go, and you are probably extremely busy, and I have some errands to run. Bye." With those hurried words, you turn to leave, feeling a mix of relief and regret that the encounter was so brief.
Father Lantom watches you as you walk away, his gaze filled with a mixture of concern and curiosity. He calls out to you, reminding you to be safe and not to return late like you did the previous night. The reminder strikes a chord within you, reminding you of the events that had occurred.
You offer a quick wave of acknowledgment to Father Lantom, a silent promise to heed his advice, before hastening your steps and practically running away. As you depart, you can't help but sense Matt's intrigue, his uneven gaze lingering on your retreating form. It's as if he detected something in your reaction, a flicker of recognition or understanding. His curiosity piques, and a hint of suspicion tinges on his thoughts. He wonders what Father Lantom might have said to elicit such a reaction from you.
Unable to ignore his curiosity, Matt turns to Father Lantom and asks, "Who was she?" There's a hint of guardedness in his voice, his instincts as a vigilant protector on high alert.
Father Lantom, ever the wise and compassionate priest, responds calmly. "She's a hardworking young woman who often helps out around the church, community centers, and hospitals," he begins. "She came back late last night after spending time with one of her friends. Completely exhausted when she returned."
Matt listens intently, his senses attuned to every word. He carefully considers Father Lantom's explanation, piecing together the fragments of information. There's something intriguing about you, something that transcends mere chance encounters.
Father Lantom continues, his tone filled with admiration. "She has a strong sense of responsibility and dedication. I've seen her commitment firsthand. She's a remarkable individual." His words hold a note of respect and appreciation for your character, subtly urging Matt to reconsider any suspicions he might harbor.
Matt's response is a thoughtful hum, his mind working through the puzzle that is you. There's a part of him that remains cautious, cautious of the secrets that lurk in the shadows. But beneath that caution lies a growing curiosity, a desire to unravel the enigma that is the young woman who crossed his path.
As the conversation between Father Lantom and Matt continues, you find yourself distanced from their words, lost in your thoughts. The encounter has left an indelible impression, and the significance of this meeting begins to weigh heavily on your mind.

METRO-GENERAL HOSPITAL – AFTERNOON
With the groceries safely delivered to the church, you embark on another journey, a more personal purpose drives this time. Making a swift detour to the nearby flower shop, you carefully select a beautiful bouquet of Bluebells, their vibrant hues capturing the essence of hope and renewal.
Entering the familiar halls of Metro-General Hospital, you exchange warm greetings with one of the nurses, their friendly smiles brightening the atmosphere. Their words convey the anticipation of someone awaiting your arrival, and they mention Doris, someone who has been eagerly looking forward to seeing you. You respond with a gentle chuckle, a mixture of affection and amusement lacing your voice, "Yes, I'm here to see Doris. I had a few errands to run, but I brought some flowers for her."
As you make your way through the hospital corridors, a comforting warmth envelops your heart, knowing that this small act of kindness will bring joy to someone cherished. With a gentle tap on her door, you hear a soft voice inviting you in. Opening the door, you find her sitting upright in bed, her frail form nestled amidst the sea of white sheets.
"I was starting to think you had forgotten about me," she teases, a mischievous glimmer in her eyes.
"Forget about you? Never," you reply playfully, a smile spreading across your face.
"I'm just tryin’ to stick around long enough to see you married," she quips, her voice filled with love and concern. A hearty chuckle escapes your lips as you place the bouquet of Bluebells delicately into the vase beside her bed.
"If you have any suggestions, let me know because damn, the selection pool is tiny," you remark, a hint of playfulness in your voice. Doris raises an eyebrow, her gaze filled with knowing. "I have a feeling you've already met someone," she says with a knowing smile. Your cheeks flush with embarrassment at her sudden accusation.
"What? Me? No," you stammer, attempting to hide the truth behind a feeble denial. Deep down, though, you know there might be a sliver of truth to her intuition. Taking a seat beside her, you feel her soft touch as she gently holds your hands, her touch both tender and reassuring. The rhythmic strokes against your knuckles feel like a soothing melody, as if she's taming a wild creature with her gentle caress.
"So, how is Ben holding up with the story he's chasing?" you inquire, your attention fully focused on Doris's response.
She rolls her eyes fondly, a mix of admiration and concern evident in her expression. "You know how he can get," she replies with a hint of a smile. You nod, understanding the relentless pursuit of truth that drives Ben.
"Maybe he's chasing the truth," you offer, contemplating the cost it may come with. Doris looks at you, her eyes filled with a motherly worry. "Maybe... I'm just worried that it might cost him something he cannot give back."
You nod once more, acknowledging her concerns. "The world needs more people like Ben," you say, your voice filled with conviction. "To shed light on the truth when no one else will. To have courage."
Doris reaches out and squeezes your hand, her eyes brimming with pride. "And the world needs more people like you too, my dear," she says softly. "People who bring kindness and light wherever they go."
Somewhere between then and now, irony found its place in your vocabulary, intertwining with your thoughts and experiences. Laughter, once a simple expression of joy, now carried the weight of bittersweetness and guilt. Sacrifice, once noble and selfless, became a mask for hidden shame. The haunting echoes of unnecessary deaths clung to you, a nightmarish burden that refused to let go.
In that elusive space between then and now, you grasped the profound truth that every action you took rippled through the world, leaving an indelible impact like the waves on an ocean stirred by a skipping stone. The concept of karma, once abstract, gained substance and became as palpable as the taste of seawater on your lips. It revealed itself as an undeniable force, shaping the intricate tapestry of existence and weaving its threads through your life.
Doris catches the flicker of longing in your eyes, sensing a shift in your mood that she can't quite pinpoint. Just as she's about to comment on it, a gentle knock resonates through the room, drawing your attention to the door. You turn, and there stands Ben, framed in the doorway, his presence both comforting and unexpected.
"Hi, Ben! Doris and I were just discussing your escapades," you greet him with a warm smile, noticing the forms he's holding in his hand.
Ben chuckles, his eyes sparkling with mischief. "Oh, really? I hope you were saying good things about me."
Doris joins in with a playful tone. "Well, we were just about to share all your deepest, darkest secrets."
Laughter fills the room as you engage in a lighthearted and witty conversation, exchanging banter and teasing remarks. The connection between the three of you is palpable, a testament to the bond you share.
Eventually, the topic shifts to Ben's work, and you inquire about his latest story. His expression turns slightly rueful as he replies, "Elisson put me on another fluff piece."
You can't help but roll your eyes in mock exasperation. "Let me guess, the Subway line? They know how to keep you on your toes, don't they?" Ben lets out a defeated sigh, his shoulders slumping slightly. "You have no idea. It's like they think I can't handle anything more substantial."
You shake your head sympathetically, understanding his frustration. "Well, just remember, even the smallest stories can have an impact. You have a way of uncovering the truth and shedding light on the overlooked."
A small smile tugs at the corner of Ben's lips, gratitude shining in his eyes. "Thanks. I appreciate the reminder. I'll make the most of it." You nod, offering him a reassuring pat on the shoulder. "I have no doubt about that. Keep doing what you do best."
As you continue the conversation with Ben and Doris, you suddenly remember an urgent task waiting for you at the courthouse. Your expression shifts, and a touch of concern enters your eyes.
"Sorry to interrupt, but I just realized I have to pick up some important files from the courthouse," you explain, your voice laced with a sense of urgency. "There's a case I've been working on, and the deadline to submit the documentation is approaching. I need to get those files and review them before it's too late."
You glance at Ben, hoping he understands the pressing nature of your responsibility. "I promise I'll catch up with you later. We can continue our conversation then," you assure him, hoping to alleviate any disappointment.
Doris, perceptive as ever, gives you a knowing smile. "Don't worry about us, dear. We understand the importance of your work. Go ahead and take care of what you need to. We'll be here when you're done."
Feeling reassured by their understanding, you bid them a quick goodbye and make your way out of the hospital, your mind already focused on the tasks awaiting you at the courthouse.

NEW YORK STATE SUPREME COURT BUILDING – AFTERNOON
As you arrive at the courthouse to pick up the important files for your case, you find yourself drawn to the sounds of an ongoing hearing. Curiosity sparks within you, and a nagging feeling urges you to step inside the courtroom.
With the files safely in your possession, you discreetly find a seat in the back, hoping to observe the proceedings without drawing too much attention. It's at this moment that you realize the case being presented is none other than the trial of John Healy, and to your surprise, Matt and his partner are the defense attorneys.
With an exasperated sigh, you raise your eyes toward the ceiling, silently questioning God or some higher being in the universe as to why your path continues to intertwine with Matt's. The repeated encounters and the unexplainable pull you feel toward him have started to test your patience.
In your moments of frustration, you can't help but wonder if there's some higher force at play, orchestrating these seemingly chance encounters. It feels as if the universe itself is teasing you, nudging you toward a connection that you're not sure you're ready for.
Your eyes shift from the ceiling, bringing your attention back to the present moment. An intriguing mix of annoyance and curiosity swirls within you as you find yourself once again in close proximity to Matt. The mysterious dance of fate continues to weave its threads, leaving you uncertain about the significance of these encounters.
Your nervousness is palpable. The weight of anticipation settles upon your shoulders, making every beat of your heart resound in your ears. Matt's heightened senses come alive. His heightened hearing tunes into the rhythm of your heartbeat, the subtle scent that lingers around you, and even the nervous energy in the movement of your bouncing leg. It's as if he's attuned to every aspect of your presence, effortlessly picking up on the signals that betray your inner state.
It's as if Matt has unlocked a hidden dimension of perception, attuned to the nuances that others overlook. At this moment, he becomes an observer of your inner world, effortlessly deciphering the signals that betray your emotions. His acute senses offer him glimpses into your state of mind, painting an intricate portrait of your presence.
But for you, this silent exchange remains unknown. Lost in your thoughts, you are oblivious to the fact that your every heartbeat, every scent, and every nervous movement is meticulously captured by his extraordinary perception. Your inner struggles become part of a symphony that plays only for him, a delicate dance of emotions that silently unfolds.
"Mr. Murdock, we're waiting," the judge's voice breaks the silence, his commanding presence urging Matt to refocus his attention on the courtroom. Matt quickly offers his apologies, "Sorry, Your Honor."
Taking a deep breath, Matt sighs, his body shifting slightly as he gathers his thoughts. He speaks with an air of exasperation, his voice smooth as velvet, each word carrying weight. "Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, forgive me if I seem distracted. Lately, I've found myself preoccupied with questions of morality, of right and wrong, of good and evil."
There's a pause, as if the room holds its breath, anticipating his next words. Matt's confidence fills the air, his voice resonating with conviction. "Sometimes, the delineation between the two is a sharp line, clearly defined. Sometimes, it's a blur, difficult to discern. And often, it's like pornography. You just know it when you see it."
A ripple of laughter ripples through the courtroom, the tension momentarily lifted by Matt's skillful infusion of humor. Even you, caught up in the gravity of the moment, can't help but let a smile escape your lips.
"A man is dead," Matt continues, his tone shifting to one of solemnity, "I don't mean to make light of that fact. But these questions, these questions… are vital ones… because they tether us to each other… to humanity. Not everyone feels this way. Not everyone sees the sharp line, only the blur.”
His words hang in the air, their weight resonating within the courtroom. "A man is dead," Matt begins, his voice measured and deliberate. He pauses, allowing the gravity of those words to sink in. Licking his lips, he emphasizes the point once more, "A man is dead. And my client, John Healy, took his life. This is not in dispute. It is a matter of record, of fact. And facts have no moral judgment. They merely state what is, not what we think of them, not what we feel. They just are."
As the room listens intently, Matt shifts his stance, "What was in my client's heart when he took Mr. Prohaska's life, whether he is a good man or something else entirely, is irrelevant," he asserts. "These questions of good and evil, as important as they are, have no place in a court of law. Only the facts matter."
Matt gestures towards Healy, making his point clear. "My client claims he acted in self-defense. Mr. Prohaska's associates have refused to make a statement regarding the incident. The only other witness, a frightened young woman, has stated that my client was pleasant and friendly, and that she only saw the struggle with Mr. Prohaska after it had started. Those are the facts. Based on these, and these alone, the prosecution has failed to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that my client was not acting solely in self-defense. And those, ladies and gentlemen of the jury, are the facts."
He takes a few steps away from the jury, gesturing to Healy once more. "My client, based purely on the sanctity of the law which we've all sworn an oath to uphold, must be acquitted of these charges," Matt declares. His voice carries conviction and determination. "Now, beyond these walls," he points upwards, alluding to a higher being, "he may well face a judgment of his own making. But here, in this courtroom, the judgment is yours and yours alone."
Returning to his seat, Matt concludes his closing argument, leaving the jury to contemplate their decision. As you sit there, impressed by his eloquence and the strength of his words, you watch the jury's expressions shift, each member deep in thought. The weight of their responsibility is evident, as they hold the power to determine the fate of John Healy.
Tumblr media
As the judge enters the courtroom and takes her seat, signaling for everyone to be seated, a sense of anticipation fills the air. You observe the room, taking note of the individuals present. That's when a tall Caucasian man with glasses and curly hair takes a seat next to you. His neat and tidy appearance suggests a person with a strict schedule and a methodical approach to life. Your attention shifts to Matt, noticing his slight head tilt in your direction, indicating his keen listening to the man's wristwatch.
An envelope is handed to the judge, who proceeds to open and read its contents. "Madam Foreperson, it's my understanding from this note that you have been unable to reach a verdict," she states. The old lady among the jury stands and confirms, "We have not, Your Honor."
Your eyes widen in surprise. The jury is hung, and an Allen Charge is issued. The judge addresses the courtroom, emphasizing the importance of the case and the significant investment of time, effort, money, and emotional strain for both the defense and prosecution. She highlights the potential consequences of a failure to reach a verdict, explaining that the case would remain open and might need to be retried. The judge further emphasizes that another trial would only increase costs without any guarantee of a better or more exhaustive outcome.
Your gaze shifts to Matt, who has removed his glasses, revealing a resigned expression. Your eyebrows furrow in disbelief. They should have won. At that moment, the man sitting next to you leans over and whispers, "One hell of a trial, hm?" You glance at him and nod, acknowledging the intensity and complexity of the situation.
As the courtroom empties and the trial comes to an end, you stand alongside the others, preparing to leave and hoping to avoid any encounters with Matt. The man who had been seated next to you earlier has already departed. Taking a moment to gather yourself, you step out of the courtroom doors, relieved to be away from the tense atmosphere.
Just as you're about to make your way out of the courthouse, a distant voice calls out your name. Turning in its direction, you see a woman approaching with her young daughter, their faces filled with a mix of gratitude and hope. You recognize them as Amanda and Lily, a mother and daughter who had been victims of abuse at the hands of Amanda's ex-husband.
Amanda approaches you, her eyes welling with tears, and asks for a hug. Overwhelmed by the emotions of the day, you embrace her tightly, holding back tears of your own. She expresses her heartfelt thanks, explaining that she had tried to contact you before but was prevented from doing so due to safety concerns. She tells you that her abuser, Mark, is now behind bars, and it's all thanks to your intervention and support.
Feeling humbled, you try to downplay your role, telling Amanda that you were just doing your job. But she insists, her voice filled with conviction, "No, you did so much more than that. You helped us find safety and gave us the courage to fight back. You're our hero."
As Amanda speaks, Lily, her seven-year-old daughter, tugs at your pants, clutching her stuffed animal tightly. You crouch down to her level, and she looks at you with wide, grateful eyes. Holding up her stuffed animal, she says with a shy smile, "This is Mr. Cuddles. He wants to say thank you too. You're our superhero."
Touched by their words, a tear or two slips down your cheeks. You shake your head in disbelief, feeling honored to have played a part in their journey toward healing and safety. "You know," you say, your voice filled with emotion as you tuck a strand of her hair, "Lily's bravery and your strength, were the true superpowers that brought us here today."
Unbeknownst to you, Matt and Foggy have been silently observing the heartfelt interaction from a distance. Foggy's face is adorned with a small smile, finding solace in witnessing the positive impact you've had on the lives of others. Meanwhile, Matt stands nearby, wearing his glasses once again and clutching his cane. His heightened senses detect a familiar presence, prompting a mix of suspicion and intrigue. He ponders the curious coincidence of crossing paths with you once more, wondering what it could mean in the grand scheme of things.
After bidding farewell to the mother and daughter, you embrace them one last time, cherishing the connection you've forged. As you lift your gaze, your heart skips a beat when you spot Matt standing alongside his associate, silently observing your interaction. Sensing a surge of emotions, you swiftly turn on your heels and hasten your steps, eager to put some distance between yourself and the courthouse.
As you navigate the bustling streets of the city, a sense of solace washes over you amid the crowd. You reassure yourself that Matt remains unaware of your true identity and abilities. In his perception, you are simply a volunteer at the church, a passing acquaintance. However, an unsettling tremor of unease creeps into your thoughts, causing your senses to heighten. The nagging feeling of being watched lingers, evoking a shiver down your spine.
Casting a fleeting glance over your shoulder, you quicken your steps in an attempt to shake off the eerie sensation. The bustling crowd provides no answers, leaving you to dismiss the feeling as mere paranoia. Determined to carry on, you refocus your attention straight ahead, your sights set on reaching the church and delving into the paperwork clasped tightly in your hands.
Unbeknownst to you, Matt's curiosity had been piqued by your encounters and his instincts led him to silently trail your steps. Though you had committed no wrongdoing and had demonstrated your dedication to the community, his blind trust in his senses drove him to observe you from a distance. With each measured tap of his cane, creating a familiar rhythm, pedestrians instinctively made way for him as he kept a careful ear on your movements, unable to retract the decision to follow once it had been set in motion.

CLINTON CHURCH – SUNSET
Stepping into the hallowed sanctuary of the church, a sense of tranquility washes over you. The soft glow of candlelight dances on the walls, casting an ethereal ambiance. The faithful, lost in their prayers, offer a gentle backdrop of silence.
With reverence, you navigate through the aisles, careful not to disturb those seeking solace. The weight of the files pressed against your chest serves as a reminder of the important work that lies ahead. Determined, you make your way towards Clinton's church office, a sanctuary within the sanctuary.
Inside the office, the familiar scent of aging books and polished wood greets you, creating an atmosphere of quiet industry. You settle in, placing the files on the desk before you, ready to dive into the tasks that await. But first, you take a moment to offer a silent prayer of your own, seeking guidance and strength to fulfill your responsibilities within the sacred walls of the church.
Lost in your work, the minutes slip away unnoticed. The rhythmic tapping of keys on your laptop fills the room, creating a sense of productivity and focus. It's only when a sudden knock interrupts your concentration that you jolt in surprise, nearly toppling over in your chair.
Your eyes widen as you take in the sight of Matthew Murdock standing before you. The unexpected encounter catches you off guard, leaving you momentarily speechless. Matt takes a few steps closer, concern etched on his features, and asks if you're okay.
Blinking rapidly, you find your voice, though it betrays a hint of nervousness as you stand up, "Uh, yes, I'm fine. Just startled. Is there something I can help you with? Are you looking for Father Lantom?"
A charming smile graces Matt's face, causing a flutter in your chest. He responds, his voice smooth and captivating, "Actually, I wanted to speak with you."
Slightly leaning back, skepticism tugs at your brows, "Me? What about?"
Matt's smile remains unwavering, seemingly attuned to the subtle changes in your physiology. His heightened senses pick up on the rapid rise of your breath and the accelerated rhythm of your heart. As he takes in your scent, a mixture of nervousness and natural pheromones, his smile widens further.
"My friend and partner, Foggy, and I happened to overhear your conversation with the mother and her daughter," Matt reveals, his voice resonating with warmth and sincerity. "We were deeply moved by your dedication to helping those in need, people like her."
His words hang in the air, carrying a sense of genuine admiration and shared purpose. Matt's ability to perceive the nuances in your demeanor adds an air of intrigue to his presence. “Both of us, we’d like to offer our legal services in those cases. Pro bono if necessary.”
You find yourself momentarily lost for words, your mind racing as you grasp the card in your hands. You notice the intricate details, including the raised braille text, a thoughtful addition that resonates with you. Your fingers glide over the bumps, feeling the embossed characters as if trying to decipher the tactile message they convey.
A soft smile forms on your lips as you finally look up at Matt, gratitude and a touch of curiosity gleaming in your eyes. "Thank you," you say sincerely, your voice filled with appreciation. "I'll be sure to keep this card safe and reach out if the need arises."
The electric connection you felt when your fingers briefly brushed lingers in the air, leaving an indelible impression on your senses. You tuck the card into your pocket, holding onto the promise it represents.

A FEW DAYS LATER…
ST. AGNES ORPHANAGE – NIGHT
You balanced the phone between your ear and shoulder, deftly maneuvering through the remaining dishes as you washed them. The sound of running water created a soothing backdrop to your conversation with Claire.
"Claire, I'm calling to see if I can come over with the wine tonight, the one I bought last time around?" you asked, your voice filled with anticipation. The children had just finished dinner, and now it was time for some well-deserved relaxation and catching up with your friend.
A warm chuckle resonated through the phone as Claire responded, "Yes, please! Oh, and you definitely owe me an explanation for the whole invisible thing you've got going on." Her playful tone brought a smile to your face, the familiarity of her teasing banter comforting.
Snorting softly, you replied, "It's actually more complicated than that. But sure, I'll be there in a few minutes."
As you hung up the phone, you glanced around the clean kitchen, satisfied with the completed task. Drying your hands on a nearby towel, you turned to see Sister Maggie, the ever-watchful presence in the church, smiling at you.
You rolled your eyes affectionately, knowing she had overheard your conversation. Sister Maggie's caring tone reached your ears as she said, "Be sure to bring some bread and cheese for her."
A genuine smile graced your lips, appreciating Sister Maggie's thoughtfulness. You nodded in agreement. "Of course," you replied, your voice filled with gratitude. "I wouldn't forget." With a sense of warmth and anticipation, you gathered the necessary provisions, ready to share an evening of laughter and friendship with Claire.

TENTH AND 54TH, APARTMENT 412 – EVENING
With the strap of your purse on your shoulder, a bottle of wine held firmly in one hand, while the aroma of freshly baked goods and cheese wafted from the bag in your other hand. Stepping up to Claire's front door, you raised your hand and knocked, the sound echoing in the quiet evening.
As the door swung open, Claire greeted you with a warm smile, her eyes flickering with curiosity. "Hey! Come on in," she said, stepping back to allow you entry into her cozy apartment.
Upon seeing your arrival, concern was etched across her face. Claire's voice held a touch of worry as she asked, "Did you walk here?" She knew all too well the dangers of traversing the city streets alone, especially after dark.
Shaking your head, you reassured her, "God, no. I took a cab." The thought of walking all the way from the church to her place seemed daunting, even for someone as independent as you. With the brief moment of concern dissipating, the two of you entered the inviting space, ready to unwind, share stories, and savor the simple joys of good company and delightful treats.
As the evening unfolded and a couple of glasses of wine were enjoyed with the cat curled up on your lap, happily purring as you stroked the soft black fur. You found yourself sharing more about your unique abilities with Claire. With a mixture of excitement and caution, you explained the essence of your illusion powers, drawing from your personal experiences and knowledge.
"I have these... abilities," you began, your voice tinged with a sense of wonder. "I can create illusions, like visual and auditory tricks that can deceive people's senses. It's as if I can bend reality and make things appear different from what they really are."
Claire's eyes widened with intrigue, her curiosity growing. She leaned closer, eager to learn more. "That's incredible," she exclaimed, her voice filled with fascination. "How did you discover this? Have you learned to control it?"
You took a moment to gather your thoughts, reflecting on your journey of self-discovery. "I had a mentor, but it took time to understand and harness this power," you replied. "Through practice and exploration, I've learned to control and manipulate the illusions to some extent. It's an ongoing process, but I think I’m getting better at it."
Claire nodded, absorbing the information with genuine interest. "That's amazing," she said, a smile playing on her lips. "You have a truly unique gift. I can only imagine the incredible things you can do with it."
You couldn't help but feel a sense of relief and comfort as Claire expressed her acceptance and awe towards your abilities. It was a rare opportunity to share this part of yourself with someone who could understand and appreciate it.
As the scraping and rattling sounds echo through the hallway, a wave of unease washes over you and Claire. Swiftly, Claire retrieves her phone from her purse and cautiously approaches the door, peering through the peephole. After a brief moment, she exhales in relief and lets out a chuckle.
"Just some old lady with a cart full of groceries," Claire reassures, her tension easing. She descends from her tiptoes and shakes her head at the unnecessary alarm. However, unbeknownst to both of you, ominous shadows cast by an unknown figure silently creep closer through the window behind you.

THE CITY OF NEW YORK POLICE DEPARTMENT 3RD PRECINCT – EVENING
"We're doing good here, Foggy," Matt affirms, a sense of contentment evident in his voice as his friend hails a cab for himself. Foggy raises an eyebrow and counters, "Are we?"
Matt, reaching for his phone in his blazer pocket, reassures him, "Yeah, we're making a difference." Just as he retrieves the device, it starts ringing, interrupting their conversation. Matt quickly answers the call, saying, "Hey, uh, one sec," before turning his attention back to Foggy.
"Foggy, I'll see you tomorrow," Matt states, a hint of mystery in his voice. Foggy, suspecting the reason behind the interruption, quips, "It's a girl, isn't it? You got a new phone just for your girls. My life sucks." He opens the door of the cab, ready to depart. Matt, wearing a knowing smile, bids him farewell, "Get home safe."
Finally, Matt puts the phone to his ear and greets the person on the other end, asking, "Hey, what's up?" Only to be responded with shrieking and yelling from the other end of the line.
As the Russian man held you tightly from behind, you could be heard kicking and screaming. Claire was desperately crawling across the floor, trying to reach the phone, but she was abruptly pulled back by the ankles by the second mobster.
“Claire? Claire, can you hear me?” You heard Matt's voice through the phone. You realized how much danger you and Claire were in. Your powers were about to surge when suddenly you were knocked out with the butt of a gun. You faintly heard Claire screaming your name as the two men carried you away into the night.
Matt hung up and felt his heart race with panic. He had no choice but to run into the street, folding his cane and darting into the nearest alleyway. He tossed his folded-up cane into a nearby trash bin, gaining momentum as he took a hard right and climbed atop a closed dumpster bin, before scaling over railings to get to the apartment where Claire was staying.
As he arrived at the apartment building, Matt's heart pounded in his chest, filled with worry for Claire's safety. He pushed the door open with urgency, causing it to swing violently on its hinges. Exhausted and breathless, he called out Claire's name, his voice filled with desperation.
Utilizing his heightened senses, Matt detected the faint electromagnetic waves emanating from Claire's phone. He swiftly located it and tossed it onto the table, relieved to have found it. However, the weight of his guilt and frustration overwhelmed him.
In a surge of anger, he grabbed a nearby dining chair and with a forceful swing, smashed it through the wall. The sound of splintering wood echoed through the apartment, a physical manifestation of his pent-up emotions. Matt stood there, panting heavily, as he tried to regain his composure amidst the wreckage.
Gradually, Matt's acute senses picked up on your familiar scent and presence within the apartment. The realization struck him—those men had taken you too. The weight of responsibility settled heavily on his shoulders as he questioned whether he was a harbinger of danger to those he cared about.
Taking a moment to center himself, Matt focused his heightened senses on the surroundings, seeking any clues or remnants of what had transpired. The lingering aroma of wine and cheese filled the air, indicating a friendship between you and Claire. The ethereal echoes of your presence, intertwined with Claire's, intensified his concern for your safety.
Moving swiftly, Matt navigated the apartment, guided by his heightened senses. He approached the partially open window and pushed it further, allowing the sounds of Hell's Kitchen to filter in. Leaning against the window ledge, he strained his ears, listening intently to the bustling streets below, hoping to catch any hints or whispers that could lead him closer to finding you.
As Matt focused his acute hearing, he sifted through the cacophony of voices and city sounds, honing in on the distinct Russian accents that caught his attention. Amidst the chaotic symphony, he detected the muffled screams of Claire, resonating with desperation and fear.
His heart sank as he discerned the sound of a car trunk slamming shut, accompanied by the absence of your heartbeat in his aural landscape. Worry surged through him, the possibility of you being severely injured or worse weighing heavily on his mind.
Determined to rescue both you and Claire, Matt swiftly devised a plan, relying on his honed senses and agile abilities. With a resolute expression, he runs out the door, embarking on a relentless pursuit to locate the car and free you from the clutches of your captors.

VELOS TAXI SERVICE – EVENING
You were abruptly awoken by a frigid deluge of water splashed onto your face, bringing you to full consciousness. You find yourself with your hands bounded behind your back, encircled by Russian mobsters, and as you look around, you see Claire slumped against one of the many parked taxis, coughing out blood and clearly battered. A man approaches you and you glare at him fiercely.
"If you cooperate, we won't have to resort to violence against you, nor will we have to keep hurting her," the man said in his thick Russian accent, gesturing with a metal bat toward Claire.
You resisted the urge to activate your powers, knowing that revealing your abilities would jeopardize not only your safety but also the lives of those at Clinton Church and St. Agnes. "What the fuck do you want?" you seethed, your voice filled with defiance. The man leaned closer, gripping your chin tightly. "Tell me his name," he demanded, his tone filled with menace.
You mockingly tilted your head at him, a defiant smirk playing on your lips. "His name? Oh, you mean the guy you're so desperate to find?" you taunted, despite the dire circumstances. "Why don't you try using those brain cells of yours to figure it out? Or are you too busy relying on violence and intimidation?"
The man's grip tightened on your chin, his eyes narrowing with anger. "Don't play games with me," he growled, his voice laced with a dangerous edge. "You think you're clever, but you're just making this harder for yourself and your friend."
You let out a dark chuckle, unyielding in the face of his threats. "Oh, I'm not playing games. I'm just enjoying watching you squirm," you retorted, your voice dripping with sarcasm. "But let me give you a hint, tough guy. You're barking up the wrong tree."
That earns you a strike to your stomach and to the side of your face from a different man. You cough out blood and spit it out on the concrete floor. The man with the bat yells once more, “Give me his name!” To which you say nothing, merely sneeringly staring at him. This fuels his anger and his about to swing the bat to your head a man blocks it before he strikes you while saying to his fellow mobster in Russian, “Sergei… Vladimir told us not to kill her until one of them talks.”
Sergei sighs and says as he walks a few steps away from you, “This gives me no pleasure. It really doesn’t. But I have been given a job to do. So please, answer the questions that I was told to ask.” He then points the metal bat to your chest and raising it to lift your chin, “Or I will begin breaking you, a piece at a time.”
You steal a quick glance at Claire, her eyes brimming with fear and pain, silently begging you to find a solution that won't compromise Matt’s identity. Your body quivers with exhaustion, blood trickling down your head and nose from the merciless beating you endured.
With a feeble chuckle, you manage to utter, "An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, and a fracture for a fracture. The one who caused the harm should suffer the same fate. But honestly, that seems a little too fair, don't you think?" The mobsters exchange confused glances, unsure how to respond to your unexpected remark. The tension in the air grows palpable as they hesitate, momentarily thrown off balance by your defiance.
Suddenly, the lights of the taxi service garage shut down, cascading all of you in a blanket of darkness. Sergei begins demanding orders to his other men while Claire begins to laugh, “You want his name?” she says, “Ask him yourself.”
They begin to turn on the headlights of their parked taxi’s, the yellow lights barely give any visibility. Utilizing your abilities discreetly, you create subtle illusions, distorting the mobsters' perceptions. Shadows dance and figures appear in the corners of their vision, distracting them from the real threat.
As Matt moves with astonishing agility and precision, the mobsters swing their weapons blindly, striking nothing but empty air. With each swing and bullet they waste, they grow more frustrated and disoriented, falling prey to the illusions you strategically place in their line of sight.
One mobster, driven by anger and desperation, charges towards Matt, unaware of the trap that awaits him. You project a convincing illusion of a wall directly in the assailant's path, causing him to crash into it with a resounding thud.
Seizing the opportunity, Matt springs into action, his enhanced senses guiding his every move. He swiftly incapacitates one mobster after another, his punches and kicks landing with calculated accuracy. The sound of bones cracking and groans of pain fill the air as the fight intensifies.
In the midst of the chaos, you continue to manipulate the shadows, obscuring your presence and diverting attention away from Matt's relentless onslaught. The mobsters, bewildered by the illusions, struggle to differentiate between reality and deception. With each passing moment, the tide of the battle shifts in Matt's favor. His acrobatic maneuvers and precise strikes leave the mobsters battered and defeated.
As the exhaustion and physical strain reached their peak, you found yourself unable to maintain your balance, even while bound to the chair. Dizziness engulfed your senses, and waves of nausea washed over you relentlessly.
Claire's panicked voice filled the room, desperately calling out your name, but your body refused to respond. Despite your best efforts to stay conscious, the overwhelming fatigue won the battle, and you succumbed to unconsciousness, slumped in the chair, your head hanging forward.
Bound and helpless, you drifted into a deep, dreamless sleep, unaware of the chaos unfolding around you.

CLINTON CHURCH – EARLY MORNING
As you slowly regained consciousness, the sound of muffled voices reached your ears. Fluttering your eyes open, you found yourself greeted by the familiar figures of Sister Maggie and Father Lantom. A mixture of relief and apprehension washed over you as you tried to gather your thoughts.
Anxiety consumed you, and you blurted out, "Does Matt know? Does he know about me?" Your heart raced, fearing that your secret involvement with Matt's nightly activities had been exposed.
Father Lantom, his expression calm and understanding, shook his head gently, as if he had anticipated your concerns. He reassured you, "No, he doesn't know. We brought you here to ensure your safety. Matt dropped you off with us."
A wave of relief washes over you, your tense muscles finally relaxing. You nod, grateful that your secret remains intact. However, a hint of frustration lingers in Sister Maggie's voice as she voices her concerns about your willingness to put your life on the line for someone who remains oblivious to your assistance. She questions the fairness of your sacrifice.
"I don't understand," Sister Maggie says, her tone filled with frustration. "You're risking everything for Matt, and he doesn't even know the extent of your involvement. Is it truly fair to endanger yourself while he remains unaware?"
Taking a deep breath, you gather your resolve. You sense a hidden reason to Sister Maggie's concerns, but your conviction remains unshaken. In your determined voice, you reply, "Sister Maggie, sometimes doing what's right requires taking risks, even if it means staying hidden in the shadows. I believe in the greater cause, in fighting for justice, even if my efforts go unnoticed. Matt is out there every night, putting himself in harm's way for this city. It's only right that I do my part, even if it remains unknown to him. I trust that my support, can make a difference."
Sister Maggie's expression softens, a mix of concern and admiration in her eyes. She nods, realizing the strength of your conviction. "I understand your perspective," she says, her voice tinged with a touch of sadness. "Just promise me that you'll take care of yourself. The path you've chosen is a challenging one."
You meet Sister Maggie's gaze, determination burning in your eyes. "I promise, Sister. I'll do everything I can to stay safe. But I won't stop fighting for what's right."
With a nod of understanding, Sister Maggie gently embraces you, her silent support and belief in your cause reinforcing your determination. You know the road ahead will be treacherous, but your resolve remains unyielding. You are the silent guardian, the hidden ally, fighting for justice from the shadows, even if it means sacrificing recognition and remaining unknown to the one you assist.

END NOTES:
Whoever invented 7am to 6pm classes with a one hour break being 12pm-1pm… I hope you never have a working charger and that you always get stuck in traffic. And know that I haven’t prayed in a while but I literally started to pray for an asteroid to come and hit me bcs I was completely exhausted today and I wasn’t totally sure if any of this makes sense… yay!
Obviously, Matt isn’t all that stupid. He’s more than likely going to check on you in a few days but like discreetly, not in a way he knows something had happened. Claire eventually has to leave but there’s obv a few things in between to tie up some loose ends.
When I got home I just sat in the shower and stared at the tiles for a good half-hour because yes, I was that tired. 10/10 would recommend.
Tbh, when I started this series I was like, hrm what if I just skip S1, S2, and immediately jump to S3. Yeah… nope.
Okay idk who reads this but yeah, I love you guys. You literally deserve all the good in the universe. <3

Marvel Month :Hulk Gray
Tumblr media
In this series Bruce Banner is talking to Doc Samson about the buried early days of the Hulk back when he was Grey not green, primarily focusing on Hulks relationship Betty Ross and her father Thunderbolt Ross
So the collaborations of Jeph Loeb and the late Tim Sale have become classics.Their probabbly best known for Batman the Long Halloween and Superman For All Seasons for DC ,but for a Marvel they did a thematic series :The Color books.Consisting of Daredevil Yellow,Spider-Man Blue,Hulk Grey and Captain America White ,each series takes a look at the early days of a Marvel superhero ,reminicing on the past as they remember a fallen loved one .IBefore this I have only read Daredevil Yellow which is pretty darn good ,but have heard good things bout both this and Spider-Man Blue (And Captain America White was SUPER delayed )
So I am so mixed on this book, cause when its great its great .....But I think, frankly, it made points that didnt feel were clear
I'll start with what I like
1.I like that there are no supervillains ,this is a character study and the villain is Thunderbolt Ross
2.This is less a superhero story and more a classic monster tale, which is fitting,as the initial idea for Hulk was based on the 1931 Frankenstein (Personal favorite of mine ) and even throw in a refrence to that film
3.Banner is an unreliable narrator ,we dont know how much of this is true and how much is his biases shaping the story .I dunno its an element I liked
4.Theres a lot of solid moments like Hulk in a cave with Betty (A scene later adapted into 2008's Incredible Hulk ), and a scene where Hulk pets but accidently kills a rabbit,I just really dug those scenes
5.There is a badass fight with Iron Man (Bulky gold suited Iron Man) and I just found that neat
6.Tim Sales artwork is gorgeous ,I reallly love the stylized look he brought to comics, and his Hulk is truly monstrus but sympathetic, also give me Karloff vibes
.....Ya know as I am typing I think I like it more thenI dislike it ...But I have three problems
1.Banner and Doc Samsons narration and analyzation got tedious real fast
2.The main focus of the book is Bruce is great in concept, the link of Hulk and Thunderbolt Ross and to qoute Clopain from Hunchback of Notre Dame "Whois the monster and who is the man " ....But also that Betty mightve fallen for Bruce for the wrong reasons, theat she saw the toxic elements of him similar to the toxic elements of her father, and tried to ficx him and...I dunno that just wasnt clear at all till near the end and just felt forced
3.Oh the ending sucks ,after a good final showdown with Ross ,Banners flashback ends with him being yelled at by Ross, then freaking out in Samsons office, leaping away and it just fell flat for me
Oh and a me thing.....I didnt relize this took place after Betty had died till a good way though (I didnt even know Betty had ever died in the comics )
I do reccomend this ,it is good ,but it did fizzle for me.Not Loebs strongest writing, though Tim Sales art make this reccomended

Can you answer every 5th question from your 216-question ask post? Thanks!
Girl you're killin me lol. I'm bored though so thanks for giving me something to do!! I know I'm really late posting this but oh well. Thanks for the ask :)
5) Book/series I reread?
My favorite author is Tana French and I've reread her books a few times. I've reread the book "The Shack" by William P. Young a few times as well. I'm sure there's more that I'm forgetting right now.
10) The word that I use all the time to describe something great?
Probably fuck. As in, "that's fucking great" or "this is fucking awesome" or something like that lol
15) Last song I listened to?
Some new Five Finger Death Punch song that was on the radio
20) Favorite video games?
Probably New Super Mario Bros
25) Actor/actress you trust enough to watch whatever they’re in?
Ooof... I can't think of any off the top of my head. I have some actors that I like that make me go "oh theyre in this movie, it might be good" but I don't think I ever really watch anything just because of a certain actor.
30) Eye color?
Blueish/greenish. Changes colors sometimes depending on what I'm wearing.
35) Am I excited about anything?
Not really.
40) What do I think about most?
I swing wildly between thinking about insignificant nonsense and everything I'm worried/anxious about (my very uncertain future and what to do with myself and mental health shit I'm going through) and I think about my loved ones a lot too!
45) Last film I watched?
The Hunchback of Notre Dame lol
50) How do I destress?
I'm pretty good at pushing things out of my mind when I want to or need to (a blessing and a curse) Also smoke weed. Idk, feels like I'm always stressed about something in the back of my mind.
55) Play any sports?
I don't anymore but I played volleyball for almost 10 years of my life. Good times. I miss those days.
60) Pet peeve?
People that put masks on their kids.
65) What fictional universe would I like to be a part of?
Friskies world from the cat food commercial of course
70) Can I sing?
I think I can sing ok. I'm not amazing but also not horrible.
75) Where do I want to live?
Away from people and traffic!!! I hate how close together the houses are in the suburbs. But I don't want to be so far in the middle of nowhere that I have to drive hours to get groceries. Idk, maybe I wouldn't mind that after awhile, I'd probably get used to it. I just want my own land and to be able to walk out the back door and have my own personal shooting range on my property.
80) Can I drive?
Yeah. Can't drive stick though. I should learn.
85) Favorite genre of music?
Rock
90) Favorite sporty activity?
Uhhh like walking or hiking I guess. Baseball definitely.
95) How tall am I?
5'7"
100) Do I have more girl friends or boy friends?
I have NO friends lol
105) Last person I texted?
My mom
110) Do I like selfies?
Eh sort of. If I'm feeling good about myself, I might take a few but that's rare for me these days. I like to take pictures of much more interesting things instead! Selfies are boring!
115) Favorite number?
8 I guess
120) Am I much of a daredevil?
Depends on the situation and the mood I'm in. I can be. We all got a little daredevil in us if we drink enough lol
125) The Beatles or Elvis?
Elvis
130) Favorite piece of advice?
Hmm....Anything Jordan Peterson says is usually great advice lol. But I guess simple things like be yourself, enjoy the small things in life, never miss a good chance to shut up, others can inspire and support you- but only you can save yourself, assume you know nothing, listen to your elders cause they know a thing or two about life (SOMETIMES)
135) Do I like gossip?
Eh not really. It depends. I know I'm guilty of it because that's all women be doin but you can definitely cross a line with that stuff and some people have issues with that and that shit can be annoying. it's definitely something I try not to do too much because I wouldn't want others to gossip about me behind my back
140) Do I believe people are capable of change?
I'd like to think so. I mean, I think its not ALWAYS the case. There's definitely people that wont or cant change but there's also plenty of people that are willing to put in the work and have changed themselves and their lives.
145) In a film about my life, who would I cast as myself, friends and family?
Bitch nobody could play me or my family better than me or my family
150) What is the best decision I have made in life so far?
I honestly don't know. I thought of a few different things and realized none of them were really decisions I 100% made for myself /: I've had a life so far that's been filled with other people making decisions for me. Kind of one of my problems I gotta work on. I guess I would say choosing to finally leave the shitty relationship I was in but he kind of left me in the end so it wasn't completely my decision. There's probably a bunch of small decisions I've made in the past that turned out great for me that I'm just forgetting right now.
155) Who is the most intelligent person I know?
I used to think my brother was because he was a genius child but then I grew up and realized there's a lot of different ways to be intelligent. I was gonna say Jordan Peterson but I dont actually know him lol. It's a hard question for me because I truly believe people are intelligent in so many different ways and Ive met many people that are smart in some ways but dumb in others. I guess my Dad would make the list if I had to pick someone.
160) What color mostly dominates my wardrobe?
BLUE
165) Do I believe in fate?
I think so. I think we can change our fate though too.
170) One of my favorite quotes?
"those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety."- Ben Franklin
"unable are the loved to die, for love is immortality"- Emily Dickinson
I have a TON of favorite quotes, I could take up pages lol. Those are just the ones I thought of off the top of my head.
175) Do I dream?
Yes, every single time I sleep. Even when I take a nap. I'm always dreaming.
180) Do I like shopping?
It depends on my mood and what I'm shopping for. Sometimes I'm in the mood to shop and I have fun with it but other times I'm not feeling it at all. I don't like spending money, it makes me feel guilty.
185) If I could master one skill, what would I choose?
Probably being an excellent shot. As skilled as Annie Oakley- if that's even possible haha
190) If I could time travel, where and when would I want to go?
60s or 70s. Maybe the 20s.
195) Would I ever want to encounter aliens?
Fuck no. Definitely wouldnt be like some sci-fi movie. It'd be fucking terrifying.
200) Dragons or wizards?
Neither. Never been into either of those things. I also never got what the big deal about dragons is
205) Do I like my handwriting?
Yeah I suppose. Its very inconsistent. It goes from messy to neat to somewhere in between all in one page. Just like me lol
210) What is on my bucket list?
Travel. See the world. I dont have anything super specific but I definitely wish I could see all this world has to offer.
215) What is the weirdest talent I have?
I have no idea. I have no talent that I can think of. I'm sure there's gotta be something but I have no clue right now.

MATT’S APARTMENT, 6A – SUNRISE
As Claire arrived, you were barely hanging on, your energy draining rapidly from the desperate need to keep Matt alive and stabilize him, staunching the flow of blood as best as you could.
In your exhausted state, everything seemed like a blur. You hardly noticed how Claire and Foggy gently coaxed you away from Matt, their intention to keep you from completely wearing yourself down. When you finally reopened your eyes, you found yourself seated in one of Matt's plush chairs, in clean clothes, and utterly dazed. Claire diligently stitched up the deeper cuts you had acquired, her focus unwavering.
Slowly turning your head to the left, you beheld Matt peacefully asleep on the leather couch, cocooned in a cozy blanket that provided him warmth. Shifting your gaze to the right, you found Claire's expression filled with concentration and concern. In a weak voice, you inquired, "Will he be okay?"
Meeting your tired gaze, Claire sadly smiled and replied, "He'll be fine. He needs plenty of rest and fluids. But other than that, you practically saved his ass."
A feeble sound of acknowledgment escaped your lips as you contemplated, "I think there's a pattern beginning to form."
Amused, Claire snorted, "Let me know if you ever get a day off. I feel like I missed a few episodes since last we talked." You weakly nodded, your eyelids drooping once more from sheer exhaustion. Concern crept onto Claire's face as she tilted her head to the side, prompting her to ask, "Have you told Matt yet? Or any of them?"
Before you could respond, Foggy emerged from the bathroom, his voice filled with frustration, "She hasn't. She hasn't told any of us shit, and I thought we were good friends. Hell, even best friends!" He sputtered out his words in exasperation.
Your gaze shifted downward, fixating on the blood-stained carpet of the apartment, a wave of shame washing over you. "Foggy..." you started, but he swiftly cut you off, his voice filled with a mix of anger and betrayal. "You knew? All this time, you knew it was him? And you didn't even bother saying anything?"
Your mouth opened, ready to explain, but Foggy's words pierced through, not leaving room for interruption. "The fact that you possess these... bizarre mystical art magic abilities and didn't even bother to tell us! You've been lying to all of us since the very beginning... me, Karen, and even Matt..."
Tears welled up in your eyes as you mustered the strength to speak. "No one was supposed to know. No one was ever supposed to know about my powers, Foggy. Matt doesn't even know it's been me all along." Foggy's eyes narrowed, his confusion and frustration evident. "What the hell does that mean? He… he doesn’t know it’s you?"
You shook your head gently, and Claire interjected, her voice soft and soothing. "Matt doesn't know that she's been the one assisting him in his... nighttime activities. Her abilities allow her to create illusions and glamour. It was pure coincidence that brought her to Matt."
Your gaze drifted aimlessly, lost in the depths of your turmoil, as you choked back sobs. "It's as if something… brought me to him," you managed to say, your voice filled with a mixture of uncertainty and self-doubt. You scoffed at your own words, aware of how improbable they sounded. "It's stupid, I know. But considering that aliens have fallen from the sky, how far-fetched is any of this?"
Your eyes blinked lazily, heavy with fatigue, as you spoke in a somber and vulnerable tone. "Not many people have seen this side of me. I never wanted anyone to know about my abilities, about the battles I've fought, and the horrors I've witnessed. It's incredibly dangerous, Foggy.”
Frustration and weariness etched across Foggy's face as he rubbed his hand over his tired eyes and through his hair. “But don't we have the right to make that decision for ourselves? Why won’t you let us in? Let us, me, understand?” he questioned, his voice tinged with exasperation.
A sniffle escaped you as tears welled up in your eyes. "The most difficult part of anything self-destructive is its familiarity," you admitted, your voice filled with raw emotion. "I've always known pain, and leaving it behind seems like losing a part of myself that taught me to survive.”
Tears streamed down your face as Foggy uttered your name in a sad and sympathetic tone. Your quiet sobs filled the room as you pleaded, your voice trembling, "You can't tell Matt, please. Not yet, at least, not like this."
His own eyes welled up with tears, reflecting the pain he felt. "He's my best friend," Foggy choked out, his voice thick with emotion.
You nodded, trying to compose yourself amidst the overwhelming flood of emotions. "I know. I know it's incredibly cruel and selfish of me to ask this of you. But, Foggy..." Your voice cracked, and you struggled to steady your breathing. "I can't let him know it's me. I can't fulfill my duty to protect him and the people of Hell's Kitchen if he ever found out what I've been doing, the risks I've been taking. He'd blame himself if I ever got hurt."
Foggy shook his head, unable to fully grasp the weight of your words. "But you two could work together and–"
"You know how protective Matt can be," you interrupted, your voice filled with a mix of fondness and exasperation. "He cares for everyone's well-being except his own. For once in his life, I have the chance to take care of him."
"Even if he doesn't know it's you?" Foggy questioned, his voice laced with concern and confusion.
"It's better this way," you whispered, your gaze dropping. "To remain anonymous... for now."
Foggy fell into a contemplative silence, grappling with the weight of the situation. Finally, with a heavy sigh, he relented. "Okay. Okay, fine. Condition one: I won't tell Matt... yet. But you have to promise me that you'll tell him soon. I don't know how long I can keep this from him."
Sniffling, you nodded in agreement. Foggy continued, "Condition two: You and I need to have a long chat about all this voodoo magic stuff at some point, after I kick Matt's ass for lying to me."
A weak laugh escaped your lips. "Okay, Foggy. I swear."
Extending your pinky, you intertwined it with Foggy's, solidifying your promise. When you let go, you sniffled and apologized, "I'm sorry, Fog. For all of this. For everything."
Foggy recognized the sincerity in your words and gave you a weak smile. "Okay, no more. Enough with the sad eyes and the pouting. C'mere."
You weakly laughed as Foggy pulled you into a gentle hug, filled with warmth and hope. It was a comforting reminder of the friendship and support he offered. In that moment, you were grateful to have him by your side.
After the embrace, you glanced out of Matt's window, noticing the first rays of sunlight peeking through. It wouldn't be long before he woke up.
"I know you have countless angry questions about Matt," you said to Foggy, a hint of weariness in your voice. "Thank you for not asking them on his behalf. He deserves the chance to tell you his story."
Foggy pursed his lips, clearly still upset and annoyed with Matt, but he understood the importance of allowing him to speak for himself.
"Foggy... I have one last favor to ask of you," you said, gripping his shoulder lightly.
He looked at you with concern, and you squeezed his shoulder gently. "Be gentle with him. Please, just be gentle."
Foggy nodded in response, silently acknowledging your request. You exhaled, feeling the weight of the moment lift slightly from your shoulders. It was as if you had been holding your breath all this time.
Claire's voice called out your name from the kitchen, breaking the silence. "We need to go before Matt wakes up and notices you were here."
You nodded and began to push yourself off the chair, with Foggy's support by your side. Gritting your teeth against the pain, you wobbled over to Claire, completely fatigued and drained. She packed the rest of her belongings and offered her arm to support you.
But just as you were about to leave, a realization struck you. "Wait, I need to make sure every trace of me here is gone."
Foggy looked at you in confusion, his voice filled with curiosity. "What?"
Without hesitation, you quickly performed a spell, your weak hand moving through the necessary motions. A surge of gold and silver energy filled the room, erasing every trace of your presence. It scrubbed the apartment clean as if you had never set foot inside.
"Holy shit," Foggy breathed, his eyes widening in astonishment.
You let out a weak laugh, a mixture of relief and exhaustion. "See you later, Foggy," you whispered, bidding him farewell.
As you left the apartment, supported by Claire's presence, you couldn't help but feel a sense of bittersweetness. An unfamiliar path was ahead, and the weight of your secret had been revealed. But for now, it was time to face the day and the challenges that awaited you and Matt, leaving behind the remnants of your presence and the memories that lingered in the room.

CLINTON CHURCH – AFTERNOON
As you slowly regained consciousness, the room appeared hazy and disoriented. The soft sunlight peeked through the windows, casting a warm glow on the worn wooden furniture. Father Lantom's concerned face came into focus, his gentle voice soothing your weary mind.
Supported by his steady arm, you were carefully guided toward your room. Fatigue enveloped your body, making each step feel like an arduous journey. Finally reaching your bed, you collapsed onto the mattress, feeling the weight of exhaustion settle in your bones.
Hours passed in a blur, the sound of distant footsteps and muffled voices occasionally reaching your ears. When you eventually stirred awake, the grogginess lingered, clouding your thoughts like a thick fog. Blinking away the remnants of sleep, you surveyed your surroundings.
On the bedside table, a glass of water shimmered invitingly, beads of condensation sliding down its cool surface. Next to it, a small bottle of painkillers stood, their label promising relief from the lingering ache that gnawed at your body. Besides the medication lay a sleek, unfamiliar phone, its screen dark and waiting.
A pang of gratitude warmed your heart as you realized that Father Lantom had anticipated your needs. He had seen the toll the night had taken on you, comprehending the reason behind your unavailability. The thoughtfulness behind his actions touched you deeply, a testament to the bond you shared with him.
With a shaky hand, you reached for the glass of water, the cool liquid soothing your parched throat. The painkillers provided relief, dulling the persistent throbbing in your muscles. Though fatigued, a spark of curiosity flickered within you as you picked up the new phone, its presence holding both intrigue and uncertainty.
These humble offerings delivered Father Lantom's unspoken support and understanding. It was a silent reassurance that you were not alone in your struggles and that there were those who stood by your side.
Sitting there with the weight of lies and hidden truths, your determination grew stronger. The previous night's events had etched themselves into your memory, leaving an indelible mark. Yet, you knew that you couldn't let fear or doubt consume you. There was no turning back now.
With a resolute breath, you opened the newly acquired phone and dialed Karen's number. The familiar sound of her voice filled your ears as she picked up on the first ring, her concern palpable even through the phone.
"Hey! I was trying to call you last night to check if you got home safe. Is everything okay?" Karen's words echoed with genuine worry.
You exhaled, mustering up a semblance of composure as you crafted a plausible lie. "Yeah... no, uh, everything is fine. My phone broke, the glass shattered and everything after I dropped it by accident. Big oops on my part."
There was a hint of skepticism in Karen's tone as she responded, "Well, I'm glad you're safe. But Foggy told me Matt got into an accident, and I'm really worried."
Keeping up the charade, you nodded to yourself before speaking, feigning ignorance. "Wow, God. Is he okay?" Concern laced your words as if you were just learning of the incident. Karen's reply was filled with a mix of relief and lingering anxiety.
"Foggy said he was fine... but I'm really worried."
Your heart ached at the thought of Karen's genuine concern for Matt, but you had to continue the facade. "I'll try and see if I can stop by, maybe bring some soup."
Karen's sigh carried a weight of unease as she switched topics. "Have you heard from Ben?"
Confusion flickered across your face as you responded, "No? What happened?"
"They didn't give him his extension," Karen revealed, her tone tinged with disappointment.
"Fuck," you muttered under your breath, the frustration evident in your voice.
"Yeah. Also, he's here, by the way, at the office. He's thinking of giving up on the Fisk piece," Karen shared her concern for the seasoned journalist evident.
Tell him I say hi," you replied, a touch of warmth in your voice. "Also, uh, tell him about Saint Bénézet Retirement Care… y’know with the person of interest I had found. Maybe it might help him change his mind. Oh, and please give him my new number, I’ll be sure to help out in any way I can with Doris."
The call concluded with Karen promising to forward the message. As you considered the fine line between keeping your personal secrets hidden and safeguarding the people you cared about, the weight of deceit weighed heavy in the air.

A FEW DAYS LATER…
CLINTON CHURCH - AFTERNOON Despite Sister Maggie's admonitions to take it easy and allow yourself time to heal, you couldn't shake off the restlessness that plagued your mind. Sitting idly only fueled your worries and overthinking, so you threw yourself into various tasks and responsibilities, seeking solace in productivity.
The atmosphere of the church was solemn. As you sorted through paperwork, filed documents, and organized phone calls, you couldn't help but feel a sense of purpose in aiding those in need. Each task completed was a small victory, a reminder that you were making a difference in the lives of others.
Yet, beneath the surface of your efficiency, a gnawing worry persisted. The thought of Matt's recovery weighed heavily on your mind, and you couldn't shake the sinking feeling in your gut. The bond between him and Foggy, once unbreakable, now seemed fragile and uncertain. Doubts crept in, whispering concerns about the state of their friendship.
As you meticulously organized donations for the parish, your mind wandered, replaying memories of their camaraderie, their shared laughter and unspoken understanding. You yearned for the reassurance that they would find their way back to each other, that their bond would emerge stronger from the trials they faced.
The work itself offered a temporary respite, a distraction from the anxieties that threatened to consume you. But deep down, you knew that until you had answers about Matt's condition and the state of his friendship with Foggy, a cloud of unease would linger over your every task, casting a shadow on your otherwise productive morning.
Feeling the strain in your back from hours of sitting, you stretched your tired muscles, arching your spine and letting out a sigh of relief. The laptop before you, its screen filled with countless lines of text and data, had been your companion throughout the day, aiding you in your tasks and contributing to your weariness.
With a flick of your wrist, you shut down the laptop and folded it closed, the soft click resonating in the quiet room. Rubbing your eyes gently, you tried to alleviate the fatigue that had settled in from staring at the screen for so long. The gentle pressure of your fingertips against your eyelids offered a brief moment of respite.
Pushing yourself away from the desk, you stood up, the creaking of the chair echoing in the room. Your body yearned for movement, a break from the confines of the office space. Your destination was the kitchen, where a simple glass of water awaited to quench your parched throat.
As you walked through the familiar corridors of the building, your thoughts drifted to the message Claire had sent you. Her imminent departure from the city brought a mixture of gratitude and a hint of sadness. You knew her absence would be felt, but her reassurance of being there for you and Matt medically provided a comforting solace.
Reaching the kitchen, you poured yourself a glass of cool water, the clear liquid cascading into the glass with a gentle hiss. The refreshing sensation as you took a sip helped ease the weariness that had settled upon you. Pocketing your phone after sending a message of appreciation to Claire, you allowed yourself a moment of quiet reflection, grateful for the support you had in your life, even in times of uncertainty.
You turned your head towards the gentle voice of Sister Catherine, acknowledging her presence with a warm smile. Her concern for your well-being was evident in her words, as she expressed understanding of your need to rest.
With a reassuring tone, you responded to her, "Yes, sister?" Your voice carried a sense of gratitude for her consideration.
Sister Catherine's request came next, presenting you with a task that required physical effort. She mentioned your need for rest, offering you an out, but your determination to stay active and contribute prevailed.
You maintained your smile, a genuine reflection of your willingness to help. "It's no problem at all," you assured her, your voice filled with sincerity and a hint of enthusiasm. "I'd be more than happy to fix the pamphlets.”
The commitment to your responsibilities and the desire to contribute to the tasks at hand outweighed any personal fatigue you might have been feeling. With Sister Catherine's approval and gratitude, you prepared yourself to embark on the simple yet meaningful task of caring for the sacred space of the church.
But when you stumbled out of the steps of the kitchen, to the side of the entryway, you didn’t expect Matt to be sitting there in the middle row, quietly there and contemplating. You stand there frozen, and you believe he already knew you were on your way out there.
Before you could even take a step, you caught sight of Father Lantom walking purposefully down the aisle toward Matt. The urgency in their interaction was evident, and you surmised that they needed a private conversation. With that realization, you swiftly pivoted on your heel and discreetly exited the area, granting them the space they required.
To occupy your time and distract yourself from the situation, you decided to attend to the remaining dishes in the sink. Methodically, you washed and rinsed each item, placing them back in their designated spots. The rhythmic sound of water running and the clinking of porcelain against the sink provided a momentary respite.
Amidst the task, you heard Father Lantom's voice calling your name. Intrigued, you paused and turned to face him, the dampness from your hands transferring to the towel you wiped them on. The seriousness in his expression indicated that something significant was at play.
"I think you should go talk to him," Father Lantom suggested, his voice filled with concern.
Your brows furrowed as you considered his words. Doubt and apprehension crept in, causing you to hesitate. "I don't think he'd want to see me—"
"He's falling apart," Father Lantom interrupted, his statement carrying a weight that resonated within you.
You sighed softly, the towel still in your grasp, and lowered your gaze. "Is Matt still there?"
Father Lantom nodded, confirming your suspicions. "I believe he's waiting for you."
A shiver ran down your spine at the dual meaning of his words. Pushing aside your uncertainties, you set the towel aside and made your way out of the kitchen, navigating towards the entryway on the side.
As Father Lantom had indicated, there he sat, still and seemingly lost in his own thoughts. You approached him cautiously, the weight of the moment hanging in the air. Taking a deep breath, you positioned yourself in front of him and cleared your throat, breaking the silence that enveloped you both.
"Hey Matt, um, how... how are you feeling?" you asked, your voice laced with genuine concern.
His response was simple yet laden with a hint of melancholy. "Could be better."
A heaviness settled over you, the weight of his pain palpable. Words failed you in moments like these when you wished you possessed the perfect solace to offer. He shifted slightly in his seat, creating a small space beside him. Taking the cue, you gingerly seated yourself, the area shrouded in gentle darkness, untouched by the cascading light from the stained glass windows.
Silence stretched between you, the world continuing its relentless march forward. In the background, the distant tolling of a bell mingled with the sweet melodies of birdsong. Your fingers fidgeted nervously, a visual representation of the thoughts swirling within you.
You looked at Matt as if trying to make a connection. You said, trying to get beyond the boundaries and get a look into the depths of his soul, "If you were guaranteed the truth from someone, who and what would you ask?"
His response hung in the air, a palpable weight of introspection. His eyes, shielded by the red-tinted lenses, revealed a glimpse of the torment he carried within. The silence stretched, pregnant with the weight of unspoken thoughts and emotions, as you waited with bated breath for his answer.
"I'd ask God why... why did he put the Devil inside of me," Matt's voice broke through the stillness, filled with a mixture of anguish and curiosity. "This anger that I have for... all the injustice. All of this... it feels like I'm losing everything. What is worth suffering for?"
His words struck a chord within you, resonating with the depths of your own struggles and uncertainties. You took a moment to gather your thoughts, exhaling softly as you prepared to respond. With a gentle resolve, you reached out and took his hand, intertwining your fingers with his. The sight of bruises and redness on his knuckles did not escape your notice, prompting a tender gesture as you rubbed his hand with your thumb.
“This is your life, and it will move and confuse you in every way possible. Everything can be difficult in some way,” you began, your voice filled with empathy and understanding.
"Being in the wrong relationship is difficult. Being in the correct one is challenging. It's hard to be broke and miserable, it's hard to achieve your dreams. It's hard to be stuck in the middle, not feeling anything. You are going to be hurt, and you are going to hurt. Sometimes you will be the bad person. Sometimes you will be the one who makes the mistake. You will occasionally need to provide yourself with your own closure. Sometimes you will have to let go. Everything is hard, but you choose your hard. You decide what is worthwhile.”
“You don't choose whether or not you'll suffer, but you do choose what you want to suffer for. Yes, this is your life, and though it can be unpredictable and messy, though it can break you down-you are going to survive it. You will always survive it. "
Matt's grip on your hand tightened, an acknowledgment of the profound truth resonating in your words. At that moment, you felt a subtle shift in the atmosphere, a shared understanding that transcended words alone.
And then, as if guided by an unspoken connection, Matt maneuvered the both of you. His arms enveloped your body in a protective embrace, and a profound sense of calm washed over you both. In that embrace, the burning pain that plagued his body faded into the background, replaced by a fleeting moment of respite and peace.
Tumblr media
"Just... thank you. I needed that," Matt said, his words touching your heart and causing it to flutter with warmth. You couldn't help but feel a rush of affection for him.
"Yeah, uh, if you ever need a hug or something... I'm around," you replied, though a bit awkwardly, but he laughed, his smile genuine and contagious. At that moment, you both knew that your connection had deepened.
Pushing yourself up from your seat, you offered him some soup before he left. He nodded appreciatively, and together, you made your way to the kitchenette area. Guiding him to a folding chair, you poured steaming soup into two bowls, taking care to ensure he was comfortable.
As you sat across from him, sharing the meal, you noticed how he slowly removed his red-tinted glasses. The vulnerability in his unsteady eyes resonated with you, and you felt an unspoken understanding pass between the two of you.
Your heart skipped a beat as you watched him, taking in every detail. He was beautiful in his openness, and you couldn't help but be drawn to him, feeling a connection that seemed to transcend words.
In that moment, the world around you faded away, leaving only the two of you. The clatter of your spoon, the soft slurping of soup, and the sound of your heart fluttering were the only things that mattered.
Friendship, you thought, was indeed a miracle. It was the discovery of someone who made the vast and lonely world feel a little less daunting. As you sat there with Matt, the bond between you grew stronger, and you knew that no matter what challenges lay ahead, you had found a true friend in each other.

THE LOFT, RAFTERS
CLINTON CHURCH – MIDNIGHT
As you phoned Karen's number over and again, worry bit the corners of your mind, only to hear the robotic voice of her voicemail on each call. You thought that was strange because Karen was usually the one to answer right away and the late hour shouldn't have been an issue for her.
There was something disturbing about the situation, even as the logical portion of your mind tried to calm the increasing anxiety. Maybe it was that persistent gut instinct, that unsettling sense that things isn't quite right. You were unable to escape the concern, conjuring up images that intensified your mounting anxiety.
The stillness on the other end of the line became louder with every missed call, as the seconds turned into minutes. Even though your logical self attempted to comfort you that everyone had varied sleep habits, the worry lingered in your thoughts like a never-ending itch.
Your wavering gaze betrayed the intensity of your anxiety as you acted, concerned about Karen's safety. The atmosphere in the room reflected your inner anguish as you nervously pulled the dead skin from your lips, a habit that became apparent when your fear became more and more intense.
You walked the wooden floors back and forth, unable to control the restless energy. You felt uneasy thinking about Karen's recent research endeavors with Ben. The two had been working hard to gather information that would expose Fisk, and that very investigation could have put Karen in danger.
The old rosary drew your attention as you stood by your bedside table, glowing softly from the little bulb resting on it. The familiar item was surrounded by a warm glow that gave it a reassuring atmosphere. The unrelenting ticking of the clock served as a constant reminder of the necessity of your decision with every second that passed.
You looked at the clock again, the hands uncontrollably ticking away as resolve welled up within of you. You quickly went for your jacket, the familiar fabric feeling familiar under your fingertips, following your gut feeling and your worry for Karen's safety. After making up your minds, you decided to go into the night with the unwavering friendship and feeling of responsibility guiding you.

Swamp Thing Annual #7: The Children’s Crusade
Tumblr media
Tefé meets Jimmy Savile.
I don't know why this comic book isn't with all of the other Children's Crusade comic books. I guess I'm terrible at organizing my comic books (I say as if it's a debatable opinion while two stacks of random comic books sit on the book shelf next to a comic book short box empty of all but envelopes and bills to be shredded). So now this comic book won't make much sense and when I finally find the box with my other Children's Crusade comic books, I'll have forgotten this story and will become confused by the missing chapter. I'm a little bit upset about this. But I won't be upset for long because earlier I noticed I have some Kid Eternity comic books in this stack and guess who wrote Kid Eternity? Ann Nocenti! Holy shit, I can't wait to read that oubliette full of earnest confusion. This is the exact middle chapter of the story. But I don't think I'll be too confused because I remember how the Dead Boy Detectives were searching for the Free Country where all the endangered and abused children wind up. It was easy to remember that once I read "The Story So Far..." bit at the beginning. Tefé has found herself alone in the swamp because Swamp Thing and Lady Jane and Abby Arcane are all on adventures. Unless they're dead. I wasn't reading Swamp Thing back then. I don't think I ever read Swamp Thing. I know! I'm like the greatest comic book reviewer on the Internet and I've never read Alan Moore's "The Anatomy Lesson." It's possible that in another blog post somewhere in my thousands of blog posts I pretended that I read it. But that would probably have been early on when I was worried that people wouldn't take me seriously if I started announcing having not read a bunch of the landmark comic book series. I also never read that Green Arrow where Speedy was caught sucking dick for heroin. And I never read Miller's Daredevil or Batman: Year One. Also I never read any major Marvel moment prior to the late 90s. Unless Wolverine and Kitty Pryde was one of those titles. My friend Philip Newby had the limited series scattered all over his living room floor and I scrounged them all up and read them. It should go without saying that I don't remember them. I'm like that. Why should I remember the genius things I read when I can't even remember all of the genius things I write?! Puck arrives to take Tefé to the Free Country because he's a nice guy who only wants the best for all the children of the world. Roland and Paine, the Dead Boy Detectives, arrive moments too late to follow them. Looks like they'll have to try following Dorothy Spinner over in the Doom Patrol annual. Speaking of Dorothy Spinner, I can't wait until the second season of DC Universe's Doom Patrol! Bring on the Candlemaker!
Tumblr media
Seems like a decent place, housing kids from the Holocaust, kids working out of coal mines, kids being sexually abused. Why then am I so suspicious of it?!
Like most annuals and stories about children, this tale has bored the ever-living joy out of me. Hopefully nobody is reading this and just thought, "Oh yeah? Cry me a river! I just got diagnosed with cancer!" Because then I'd have to admit that I care more about my level of boredom than somebody else's life and death situation. The washed-out kid with Mark Buckingham face explains how Free Country began during the Crusades which isn't surprising because the entire idea of the Crusades should have been enough to cancel Catholicism. I tend to get annoyed with people who infantilize homo sapiens from hundreds or thousands of years in the past, as if our ability to understand the world around us only kicked off some time around the Industrial Revolution. But then I think about some of the atrocious things people did in the name of religion and I think maybe those people should be seen as less formed than modern people. But then I also think about how beautiful works of Gothic architecture were created by these people and I reach this conclusion: homo sapiens have always had the potential to create great and beautiful works while simultaneously having the potential for great cruelty fueled by greed, selfishness, and paranoia. It is only the coming together of those two things that could have built Notre-Dame. At least the cruelty toward "lesser" men was focused to create something beautiful in the cases of cathedrals whereas sometimes the cruelty was as simply front facing as sending as many people as possible to die in a foreign land for nearly no other reason than to kill as many different people as they could who already lived there. And then I remember that modern homo sapiens aren't really any different but when is the last time we built a fucking magnificent cathedral?! Oh, sure, we sent people to the moon! But I can't visit the moon while simultaneously being scolded by a German or French priest to remove my Goddamned hat.
Tumblr media
This spoon sent me down a YouTube rabbit hole beginning at the opening theme to Vegetable Soup (because it had a funky cartoon spoon as host) and ended at The Banana Splits credits where I learned in the comment section that in 2019 there was a Banana Splits horror movie. Now I'm mad at everybody I know for not telling me about this.
Tefé and Maxine go on some mini-Lord of the Rings journey to destroy some goblin and save Free Country. They use their powers over vegetables and animals to save the day and everybody cheers. I don't know why Free Country, a safe haven for children, also includes an evil land full of evil Gobble-You-Ups. I guess you need some sort of conflict to distract the child populace from whatever true evil is going on in this place. The leaders of Free Country probably drink children's blood to survive. It turns out it was all a game and then Tefé almost dies because she's been away from the Green too long. The kids reluctantly send her back home so that she doesn't die but Maxine decides to stay so she can have an adventure with Dorothy Spinner. Swamp Thing Annual #7: The Children's Crusade Rating: I don't rate annuals. If I have rated an annual in the past, it was a mistake and/or a hallucination. Also there's a second story after the first one that I haven't read yet because I forgot about it. And since I've already stopped this review with the ratings paragraph, I will not be discussing it even if it has street walking flowers in pumps and bell bottom jeans wearing flower Johns and ends with Flower Superbaby being sent into space. Also there is a third story that I didn't forget about because I just realized it exists. It's a retelling of The Beauty and the Beast. Speaking of The Beauty and the Beast, I was recently told that Gaston in the live action Beauty and the Beast was gay and my reaction was, "So he wanted Belle as a beard?" And the answer was, "Yes. That is the plot." And now I can't bare to watch it because if that isn't true, I will be devastated.

5 Superhero Movies That Are Only Worth It For One Scene
Bad superhero films are a treasure. Not only does one make you disappointed with Hollywood for creating a bad movie, but it also makes you doubly frustrated because they’re messing up something that you know is good in comic book form. However, we shouldn’t write off a bad superhero movie immediately. Upon closer examination, these terrible films can contain little glimpses of promise — little glimpses that make you say “This might be a secret masterpiece.” Or at least, “This doesn’t suck every poop.”
5
Batman & Robin — The Criminal Property Locker
In the annals of bad superhero films, Batman & Robin stands alone. It isn’t a “Well, maybe it’s not THAT bad” film like Superman Returns or Spider-Man 3. It isn’t a “I’ll forget the plot of this before I even leave the theater” film like X-Men: The Last Stand or Daredevil. It isn’t a “That’s a damn shame” film like Superman IV: The Quest For Peace or Robocop 2. And it isn’t a “If there is a God, they wouldn’t let this happen” film like Catwoman or Spawn. Instead, it’s a film that somehow gets both more amazingly terrible and more inexplicably enjoyable with time. I hate it and I love it in equal measure, and years after I’m dead, researchers will discover my skeleton clinging to a VHS copy of it, like Quasimodo and Esmeralda at the end of Hunchback Of Notre Dame.
But the movie does have one extremely cool split second. Now, there is a well-known Easter egg in Batman & Robin: When Bane and Poison Ivy are breaking Mr. Freeze out of Arkham Asylum, you get a glimpse of the “Criminal Property Locker.” And in the locker are the costumes of the Riddler and Two-Face from Batman Forever. That’s kind of neat — though since Two-Face died by falling into a spiky underwater pit, it does imply that some poor Arkham intern had to dry-clean and sew his fucking suit back together.

5 Things You Can't Help But Wonder When Watching Movies
But the rest of the stuff in the room implies that when the Tim Burton/Joel Schumacher Batman wasn’t eviscerating clowns or neon terrorists, he was still pretty busy. Beside the Riddler’s suit is a doll, so at some point, was Val Kilmer punching the shit out of B-list villain Toyman? Or is that the work of the Dollmaker, a guy who made dolls out of his victims’ skin? Is that dude still in Arkham? It’s unlikely, considering that Michael Keaton’s Batman was one part hero and nine parts sadist, and probably attached a bomb to Dollmaker and peed on him a little bit before even learning his name. But still, the scene adds history to a series that seemed to be mostly about Batman sitting around in his office, waiting for crime to happen.
And then, on the right side, we see a pair of boxing gloves. So good luck, guy who was using those. I’m sure your career as Two-Punch Man was really hitting its peak just before Michael Keaton ripped your intestines out through your eye holes.
But the most interesting part is the big mechanical suit that we see, and on first glance, you’d probably assume that it’s Mr. Freeze’s suit, since that’s what Poison Ivy broke into the locker to get. But Mr. Freeze’s suit looks nothing like that. So either Mr. Freeze has been fighting Batman and Robin for so long that he’s had to upgrade his technology in order to keep his chilly ass un-kicked, or it belongs to another mech-suited villain. The pyromaniac Firefly, maybe? That would be so awesome, and now I’m so pissed that I never got to see Val Kilmer stare expressionless around a bug man with a flamethrower. What were you even good for if you couldn’t give us that, the ’90s?
4
Judge Dredd — The Angel Gang
Judge Dredd came out in 1995, when we were still trying to figure out whether superhero movies were going to be a thing. Sure, Superman and Batman had been pretty successful, but was there hope for anyone else? The answer to that was “Not yet,” as proven by the lackluster Judge Dredd, which featured Sylvester Stallone. I know that we’re all currently pretty high on Stallone after Creed, but between Rocky IV and Rocky Balboa, he was having a rough time being in any movie that someone could honestly call good. At his best, he was in films like Demolition Man — or as my dad would call it, Daniel, we need to talk.
Judge Dredd has sweet set design, but other than that, it’s a lot of Stallone and Armand Assante shouting at side characters who are too useless to be given their own shouting dialogue. The only time it really perks up is when Stallone and his little buddy Rob Schneider get captured in the wastelands by the Angel Gang. The Angel Gang are cannibals, and their role in the movie almost feels like Judge Dredd DLC. But during the gang’s brief vacation in your eyeballs, Judge Dredd ceases to be a humdrum exploration into the beauty of shoulder pads, and starts feeling special.
There are plenty of movies wherein superheroes fight random gangs. There are just as many superhero movies where the hero is forced to fight a guy who could’ve been a hero, but instead went evil. But there are very few superhero films in which the hero has to tangle with the cast of The Hills Have Eyes. The Angel Gang is a bunch of wild cards. They don’t want to build a city-sinking torpedo or open up a portal to release an ancient evil whatever; they just want to snack on you a little bit. They won’t say any clever lines or reveal any master plans. At most, they’ll maybe give you a recipe for you, medium-rare.
youtube
Sadly, their stay is brief, because Stallone soon escapes and jams an electrical wire into the head of most monosyllabic among them. Of course, the mutant does get to say, “You killed my Pa,” so it’s not a total waste.
3
Blade: Trinity — The Human Farm
Throughout the Blade series, characters are constantly mentioning the fact that the vampire universe is bigger than you know. Sure, you think we live in a world of humans and puppy dogs and hit singles from Evanescence, but underneath it all, there’s a society of vampires. And when that society decides to rule the world, Blade will … take them out pretty easily, actually. For a race that’s apparently thiiiiis close to dominating the world, they sure seem to be divided into easily spin-kicked pockets.
Blade: Trinity is the worst Blade film. The best thing about Blade and Blade 2 is that they feel inventive and fresh. You’re getting things from them that you wouldn’t get from a Spider-Man or X-Men film — namely, Wesley Snipes cursing and reducing screeching henchmen to ashes. It’s why they’re two of my favorite superhero films. On the other hand, Blade: Trinity features boring-ass Dracula and his something or another quest to vaguely rule the world. After years of tackling rave mutants and goth Nosferatus, Blade’s final fight is with a bad Witcher cosplayer.
Luckily, we do get one scene that feels like it came out of the earlier films. Blade finds a human farm, where a bunch of comatose people are vacuum-sealed into big Ziploc bags and used as a constant source of vampire food. It’s super creepy, and when Blade gets told that they’re all brain-dead, he shuts the whole thing down with barely a second thought or a quietly growled “motherfucker.”
New Line Cinema
It also gives the movie (and the series) a sense of grand scale that it had been lacking. Oh, THIS is what the vampires were hyping up when they were jabbering on about their big vampire plans. Well, I apologize for not paying more attention, emo ghouls. My bad. My bad.
2
X-Men: Apocalypse — Wolverine’s Introduction
Before Logan, we only got tastes of Wolverine’s full potential as a fighter. One taste was in X2, when he has to defend Xavier’s School for Kool Kidz and Cyclops from William Stryker’s men. But the best pre-Logan scene of Wolverine grinding his way through bad guys in order to level up for the final boss was in X-Men: Apocalypse. Wolverine appears for only a few minutes in this movie, and he looks like an absolute monster.
Imagine you’re a security guard for some mutant research project. You don’t really worry about those mutants escaping, because why would you? They’re usually sedated and subdued, and if they did start waking up, there’s a whole room full of guys with heavy firearms who would blow them away. Then one day, you’re eatin’ a microwavable chicken pot pie and thinking about your novel when you hear “Weapon X is loose.” You know, the most dangerous experiment in a whole building full of dangerous experiments. Will the gun they’ve given you work against someone with adamantium claws and, if the rumors you heard are true, healing powers? Maybe.

That’s the feeling you get during the scene in which Wolverine escapes: pure, pee-your-pants, “Oh my god, I was not properly trained for this” terror. Sure, Logan has a lot of scenes where he cuts his way through dudes, but that movie frames it as action, while this turns Wolverine into a slasher villain. It doesn’t hurt that the scene ends with a splash of blood coming from offscreen, which is slasher movie code for “Daaaammmnnn.”
The rest of the movie is pretty subpar. The X-Men’s most powerful villain, Apocalypse, is handled so poorly that you just wish Magneto could be the main bad guy for the fourth time. But I guess it’s to be expected that the best part of an X-Men film would include Hugh Jackman. Oh, Hugh. Was it something I said? Please come back.

Batman v. Superman — The Warehouse Fight
Batman v. Superman didn’t give us a lot of what I would call “iconic” Batman moments. At one point, he does ask Superman, “Do you bleed?” and that’s pretty cool. But then Superman flies off because he has more important things to do than to lightly argue with some billionaire manchild, leaving Batman just standing there. So what does Batman do? He says, “You will,” and TOTALLY WINS THAT CONVERSATION. You sure got him, dude helplessly standing in the wreckage of his super car. I’m sure the shower argument that you had by yourself later was full of similar zingers. “DO YOU BLEED? WELL, I BET YOU DO. AND THEN I’D FUCKING PUNCH HIM LIKE THIS, AND SUPERMAN WOULD BE ALL LIKE, ‘NO, PLEASE, STOP, BATMAN. I BET YOUR PENIS DOESN’T EVEN SLIGHTLY CURVE TO THE LEFT.’ AND I’D BE ALL LIKE BAM. POW. SHUT UP.”
On a more positive note, Batman v. Superman does have one awesome scene: the warehouse fight. Now, before I get into why this part is so great, I do have to say that a lot of it has to do with the critically acclaimed Batman: Arkham games, which make every other Batman fight scene in every other medium look like a slap fight among friends. In the Arkham games, you can sneak up behind a dude, choke him out, zip up to a gargoyle, fly over and drop-kick a man’s torso off his body, zip back up to another gargoyle, tie a guy up to said gargoyle, throw a smoke pellet, hit a thug with an electric shock gun, choke out another dude, and then run up to the last dude as he fills you with bullets and hope that your body armor holds up for long enough so that Batman can someday wear the man’s skull as a shoe.

That’s the kind of thing that we got in the Batman v. Superman warehouse scene, during which Batman goes back and forth, rearranging an entire gang’s internal organs using everything in his disposal. Here are a few highlights:
– A guy comes into the room brandishing a grenade, so Batman kicks a guy he already has hanging from the ceiling into the grenade man.
– Batman Rock Bottoms a dude into the floor — a technique most assuredly taught to him by Ra’s al Ghul when Batman trained with all of those ninjas. “You must learn to conquer your fear, Bruce,” I remember Ra’s saying in Batman Begins. “CONQUER IT WITH THE PEOPLE’S ELBOW.”
– Batman uses his grappling hook gun thing to sling a box into a guy, and the guy gets hit so hard that he flies into a wall and the back of his goddamn head apparently comes off.
There are a lot of people who have a problem with Batman committing murder, but since my favorite superhero film is Batman Returns, I don’t think it’s that big of a deal. At the very least, it gave us a chance to experience an Arkham City level on the big screen, narrated entirely by Ben Affleck’s grunts.
