Man, it is refreshing to find someone else who wasn't impressed by Frieren's demon arc. It is not like I disliked it, I do like this kind of shonen action bullshit, it is fun. But to me it seems like a step down to the earlier episodes, the show downplaying its own strong points to do common action. It is surprising to me so many people seemed to love it as much as they did, it is the lowest point of the show so far for me.
Mmm. 'Didn't dislike it, but a step down' is a good summary - it deemphasised what made the show stand out narratively, to try to be something else. If I was in the mood to watch Kimetsu no Yaiba or Jujutsu Kaisen I would! Fortunately, we seem to be getting back on track with ep 11 - I'll be writing that up once I've watched another 4-6 more episodes. I'm getting pretty near the end of the first cour, so I might watch up to there.
Bit of a weird cour length at 16 episodes, but honestly that's good - I'd love to see 'seasonal' anime be more able to break free from the pacing constraints of 'it must always be 12-13 episodes'. Sometimes that's not the best way to slice up a manga!
One thing I do appreciate about the simultaneous success of Frieren and Dungeon Meshi is that they're both fantasy anime which don't do the isekai thing and put some effort into establishing a setting which feels like people live there. They're both very overtly RPG-influenced, but neither is actual litRPG, which is very much to their benefit. Ryōko Kui's passion for lovingly constructing her fantasy setting goes without saying. I'm told the Frieren manga sketches its setting rather loosely, but the anime is doing a whole lot to flesh it out as a place people live, because they let Seiko Yoshioka go absolutely nuts.
I was chatting with kvin on the sakugablog server (senpai...!) and he mentioned one particular instance - there's a scene Eisen is tending to the graves of his family. In the manga it looks like this:
Tumblr media
Nondescript piles of dirt with a rock on top that are just next to his house. (Also, oof, this colouring. I thought this was a fan colouring at first but no that's official.) When we cut forward 50 years, we see Eisen leaving flowers: they're in big wrapped bouquets like you'd buy at a supermarket. The little Minecraft hut hasn't changed at all.
In the anime, it looks like this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not only do we have the recurring use of fields of flowers as a symbol of remembrance, there's clearly been some thought put into the design of the grave markers - even if we're not told what the spherical stone might mean, it obviously means something, and you have the stone as a symbol of permanence. There's those little ritual plates for offerings. And, significantly, it's clear that Eisen has added to these graves over the intervening 50 year period: the graves in the later time are larger, with more stones. The area around the grave site has more flowers and another tree that's grown. It's clear he's been carefully tending to this site his whole life. It's that kind of attention to detail that really makes this anime shine.
It's clear this anime was a real labour of love, and I don't want to deny that there is a lot to praise in the demon arc. I didn't mention it in my post, but the scene where Frieren commands Aura to kill herself (after Aura's mind control attempt backfires) is impressively brutal - apparently episode director Nobuhide Kariya acted that scene out with an umbrella, complete with expressions. (The expressiveness of the acting does a lot to foreshadow the demons having more complex characterisation, too. I hope.) It's just quite a weak storyline off the bat, so the execution can only do so much to elevate it.
Honestly, skimming the manga a bit, I'm all the more impressed by this adaptation. Admittedly, some of it is down to a weak scanlation that doesn't read very well, but it really doesn't have the same impact at all on paper. It's not just the fight episode - throughout, the anime staff clearly gave themselves freedom to interpolate and expand in ways that end up making the manga feel like a rough draft.
...actually come to think of it, they did a similar thing with Bocchi. The manga is a 4koma (by all accounts a good one), and they fleshed it out into a more substantial story with a strong emotional arc and also all the wacky experimental animation gags you could hope for. So I guess that's kind of just how Keiichiro Saito rolls! But it's really impressive how adeptly this team is able to handle such a completely different register. Bocchi and Frieren could hardly look more different on the surface.
Anyway, I'll save any more comments for the next part of this impromptu liveblog.

long story short, the Penis SMP happened because someone was making fun of MCYT fans, and made a post like “mcyt fans will see an unrelated post and be like ‘omg this is just like shittyfartbaby69 and penisunavailable in the electric chair execution scene’”. The Penis SMP does not actually exist, this post was the first mention of any of the characters. Anyway, MCYT fans have a sense of humor, so they saw this post and started posting Goncharov style about this fake SMP. They made up characters, someone made official skins for the characters, people posted fake meta analysis of scenes they made up, etc. This happened around may 2021 i think. There was a discord server created, and later on, a few people decided to make it an actual SMP and livestream acting as the characters from the SMP. this wasn’t very popular, the PSMP was largely a short bust of popularity and then it quickly faded from memory, with only around 35~ dedicated fans of it by September. But any time a post comes up reminding MCYT fans about the Penis SMP, the memories all come flooding back. (Fun fact, a decent chunk of PSMP fans didn’t even watch minecraft youtubers/streamers. they were just there for the fake SMP. I’ll be honest, I was a hardcore Penis SMP fan long before I watched a single Dream SMP video. But those days are in the past, for me. Fun fact number two, someone wrote a 50k word PSMP Hermitcraft crossover fic. the last update was in august 2022. The few fans the PSMP had after it faded from mainstream popularity were very dedicated.)
thank you for the cult indoctrination, when does the mass suicide start?

Understanding the Anatomy of Minecraft Server Files
how to get donate rank in minecraft servers Minecraft, the immensely popular sandbox game developed by Mojang Studios, has captivated millions of players worldwide. One of the key features that sets Minecraft apart is its ability to host multiplayer servers, enabling players to collaborate, compete, and explore vast virtual worlds together. Behind the scenes of these servers lies a complex structure of files and directories that govern the server's functionality. In this article, we will delve into the anatomy of Minecraft server files, shedding light on the key components and their significance. - Server JAR File: At the heart of every Minecraft server is the server JAR (Java ARchive) file. This file contains the necessary Java bytecode to run the server. It is essentially the server's executable file, responsible for initializing and managing the server's operations. The server JAR file can be downloaded from the official Minecraft website or other reputable sources. - Server Properties: The server.properties file is a crucial configuration file that determines various settings for the Minecraft server. It is generated automatically when the server is run for the first time. This file allows server administrators to customize essential parameters such as server name, port number, game mode, difficulty level, and more. Modifying these properties can have a significant impact on the gameplay experience. - World Files: The Minecraft world is where players can build, explore, and interact with the environment. World files contain all the necessary data to represent the virtual world within the server. These files include terrain data, structures, player inventories, and other essential elements. The world files are typically stored in a directory named "world" or "worlds," and each world within the server has its own subdirectory. - Plugins and Mods: Minecraft's extensibility is one of its greatest strengths, allowing players to enhance their gameplay experience through the use of plugins and mods. Plugins are server-side add-ons that provide additional features, such as economy systems, permissions management, and mini-games. Mods, on the other hand, are client-side modifications that alter the game's mechanics and visuals. Both plugins and mods have their respective directories within the server file structure. - Logs and Crash Reports: Monitoring the server's performance and troubleshooting issues are essential tasks for server administrators. Minecraft servers generate log files that record various events and activities, providing valuable insights into server operations. These logs can help diagnose problems, track player actions, and identify potential security concerns. In the event of a server crash, Minecraft also generates crash reports that can be analyzed to pinpoint the cause of the crash. - Whitelist and Ban Lists: Server administrators have the ability to control who can access and play on their Minecraft servers. The whitelist and ban lists are files that contain player usernames and their corresponding access permissions. The whitelist file allows only specified players to join the server, while the ban list denies access to certain players who have violated server rules or engaged in disruptive behavior. Is crucial for server administrators and advanced users who wish to customize and manage their servers effectively. By familiarizing themselves with these files and directories, they gain greater control over the server's functionality, gameplay experience, and overall server administration. It's worth noting that proper care should be taken when manipulating these files. Making incorrect modifications or deleting essential files can lead to server instability or data loss. It is always recommended to make backups before making any significant changes to the server files. Minecraft server files form a complex structure that underlies the operation of multiplayer Minecraft servers. From the server JAR file to the world files, plugins, logs, and configuration files, each component plays a crucial role in shaping the gameplay experience. By understanding these files, server administrators can tailor their servers to meet the needs of their players and create an engaging and enjoyable environment in the virtual world of Minecraft.

The Minecraft RTS Spinoff is Inventing new Enemies, Too.
Like Minecraft Dungeons, Legends is creating new mobs that are compatible with Minecraft.

Magnus Nedfors, Minecraft Legends creator and director, as well as Dennis Ries, executive producer were present at the Xbox booth livestream last week to talk about some information about Legends. They also shared information on new mobs that are both friend and foe. Mojang Interactive and Blackbird Interactive are launching a new RTS spinoff that will be making its mark in the Minecraft world, as with previous genre experiments. Dungeons broke the rules of Minecraft legend to create mobs that fit into its action RPG universe and Legends is following suit.
The big baddies in Minecraft Legends are the familiar Nether inhabitants, also known as the Piglins. Minecraftservers The Piglins were revealed in the first trailer. Legends will also introduce a "Pigmadillo" to the mix. It is a creature that lies down in a cube , and contrary to what you might think based on the geometrical structure of a cube's physics it rolls in a way that is offensive towards the intended target. Ries also mentions that there are "Bruisers", which have two razor blades. Bit horror-esque, innit? Both mobs made appearances in the latest cinematic trailer that Mojang presented.
On the side of friendship two kinds of golem will join your ranks The Cobblestone Golem, who is apparently great for taking down enemy structures, and what is sounded like Ries calls the "Plank Golem" which is an armed unit that can be ranged. You can also use speed wheat and a specific mushroom to jump up to a higher level to travel around the world and unlock new Legends areas.
Minecraft Dungeons also introduced new mobs such as the Iceologers or Mountaineers. The Iceologers ended up being included in the Minecraft Live 2020 fan vote for the mob to be added to Vanilla Minecraft. They were defeated by the Glow Squid, but I wouldn't be too surprised to see one of these new Legends baddies given the same chance to achieve Vanilla Minecraft fame.
And in case you missed it, there is definitely a badger at the beginning of the trailer as well. Project Badger was the codename of Minecraft Legends before it was made public. It could be a reference to. However, it's possible that it'll be able to make it to official mob status too.

MCM; Light Client Mod
Recently, I was playing on a server, and creating a farm, but I just couldn't stop jumping - for some reason, I just got an urge to lay my thumb on the jump key. So, unlike a normal person, who would most likely ignore the urge, I decided to create a mod to solve the issue.
I have previously worked a little bit using Fabric to mod, although I've never fully completed anything. During the process of rediscovering the setup process, I learned that Fabric's site has a page which allows you to generate a template for your mod, which kickstarts development. Therefore, using this tool, I downloaded the template, and opened up the folder as a project using IntelliJ IDEA, which is my chosen java development environment.
Firstly, it is worth noting that Fabric provides two separate entrypoints - one for the client, and one for the server (note that minecraft runs a server in singleplayer, but it is locally executed behind the scenes; I would postulate that this is what makes opening a singleplayer world to the LAN so easy while in-game).
Since this mod is only going to interact with the client's controls/input, and nothing needs to be noticed server-side, none of the server-side java code is necessary. However, deleting the full "main" module of the project isn't going to work for us, because the "fabric.mod.json" file is a part of the resources there, and defines the location of both the client and server entrypoint files. Deleting this, and other files in that region of the file structure, will cause the mod to stop working entirely.
Therefore, the first order of business is to remove the serverside entrypoint, as that just adds bloatware to what really only needs to be a small clientside mod. This, I did by entering the "fabric.mod.json" file, and removing the "entrypoints/main" key-value (the value should be a list/array of entrypoints, and should contain just one to begin with). This leaves a single client entrypoint.
Furthermore, since the template project comes with a default mixin, references to this must also be removed. To do this, I went into the "<modname>.mixins.json" file, which should be adjacent to "fabric.mod.json", and removed all references within the "mixins" list. After this, the "main/java" directory was deleted.
Now that the server/main-side of the mod has been removed, work can begin on the proper body of the mod. The plan is to add a key which allows the player to toggle an option, allowing and disallowing the player to jump on farmland. To do so, we need a keybinding, a variable to toggle, and a way of interfering with the player's motion. The toggleable variable, obviously will be a boolean (true/false) type. To interfere with the player's motion, something called a "mixin" will be used.
Mixins are used to inject our own code into existing methods in the game's code. In this case, we want to inject a little bit of code which checks whether the player is on top of farmland, and, if so, then make sure the player can't jump. Therefore, we need to find which method controls the player's jumping/motion.
Now, if you don't like the odd tangent, feel free to skip ahead to the next paragraph, where all the answers are give. Fair warning. To find which method we should use to stop the player from jumping, we need to see how the code which controls their motion. Thankfully, most of what we need to know can be found in the game's sources, which are viewable as decompiled .class files. To find the relevant files, go to ".gradle/loom-cache/minecraftMaven/net/minecraft/minecraft-clientOnly-<charsHere>/1.20.2-net.fabricmc.yarn.<blablabla>/minecraft-clientOnly-<blabla>.jar/net/minecraft/client/input". Here, there should be a couple files: "CursorMovement", "Input", "KeyboardInput", and "KeyCodes". Obviously, since we're looking to affect jumping, the relevant file will be either "Input", or "KeyboardInput". Viewing the code, while "Input" doesn't contain much of anything, "KeyboardInput" extends from "Input", and accesses which keys are currently being pressed inside the "tick" method.
Given this, our project plan is pretty well laid out: create a variable, create a keybind, create a mixin to "KeyboardInput.tick". Great! Let's start with the variable and keybind:
Assuming you've been anywhere near a java file before, declaring a variable should be pretty easy. This could easily be done in any custom file, but since it's pretty much the only thing we're going to store, I'm just going to define it in the "<modname>Client.java" file (this should be the client entrypoint defined in "fabric.mod.json"). In this case, I've made the variable "public static boolean allowFarmJump = true;".
Since this is a simple little mod, and I'm currently the only person who's going to be using it, I'm not going to bother storing the current value between sessions. The variable is going to be static, just to make things a little easier when accessing it from other files. I've also decided to make its default value "true", but this is mostly a preferential decision on my part.
Next: the keybind. Fabric's documentation is pretty short and sweet on the matter, but it does contain a little bit hidden away that I didn't notice at first: "This tutorial assumes you have the key bindings API, if not add "fabric-key-binding-api-v1": "*" to the "depends" block in your fabric.mod.json file".
After adding the key bindings API, it's time to add the keybinding itself. Using the KeyBindingHelper described in the docs, I created and registered a KeyBinding with the translation key "key.<modname>.toggle", default key of "backslash" (GLFW.GLFW_KEY_BACKSLASH), and category of "key.categories.movement" (this is the category used by vanilla's "Movement" controls category, where I want this to display).
After registering the keybind, I continued to go through the docs and added the "END_CLIENT_TICK" listener + while loop on the keybinding (remember to replace the "keyBinding" in the example code with the name of your own keybinding variable). In the while loop, this is where the "allowFarmJump" variable is being toggled ("allowFarmJump = !allowFarmJump;"). I also added feedback in the form of text appearing above the hotbar: "client.inGameHud.setOverlayMessage(Text.literal("Farm jumping set to: %b".formatted(allowFarmJump)), false);".
At this point, the variable toggling and feedback message are running fine, but we haven't actually implemented anything to prevent the player jumping on farmland. This is where the mixin comes into play:
Under the "client/java/<modpackage>/mixin/client" directory, open the example mixin. Of course, this is currently injecting into the wrong class and method, so change the "@Mixin" decorator argument to "KeyboardInput.class". Then, modify the "@Inject" method decorator to "@Inject(at = @At("TAIL"), method = "tick", locals = LocalCapture.CAPTURE_FAILHARD)". This will take the code inside the decorated method and inject it at the end of the KeyboardInput.tick method. Then, make the mixin class extend from "Input" (this is so that the "jumping" property can be accessed).
Now, inside the mixin method, we need to set the jumping variable to "jumping ∧ (allowFarmJump ∨ playerFlying ∨ ¬onFarmland)" (this notation may be unfamiliar: "∧" represents a logical AND, "∨" represents a logical OR, and "¬" represents a logical NOT). The reason for the added check with regards to whether the player is flying accounts for the possibility that the player might be in creative or spectator mode. If this were the case, and jumping were disabled, flying up would be similarly disabled.
Collecting all the required values, the assignment expression we're left with should look something along these lines: "jumping &= AntiFarmJumpClient.allowFarmJump || MinecraftClient.getInstance().player.getAbilities().flying || !(MinecraftClient.getInstance().world.getBlockState(MinecraftClient.getInstance().player.getBlockPos()).getBlock() instanceof FarmlandBlock);".
Note the assignment operator "&=", which is basically like "+=" or "*=", etc. except instead of adding or multiplying, it performs an AND operation (this is a bitwise operator, but it works on booleans as long as both sides are of the same type).
Having successfully intercepted and modified the jumping controls, when the program runs this time, the keybinding should now allow you to stop the jump key working while on top of farmland, unless the player is flying. Note that to build the mod to a .jar file, you need to run the "build" gradle task (these are found at the top of the right-hand sidebar, for me). This builds the jar file and outputs it to the "build/libs/" directory. The correct file is the one without the "-sources" at the end.
Feel free to give feedback on how this could be improved in future, or ask questions!

Alexander Skarsgård interview: ‘I nearly ran over Greta Thunberg’
The star of Tarzan, Succession and now The Northman says good looks are a mixed blessing
by Jonathan Dean (Sunday April 03 2022)
“That cemetery is where I’ll end up one day,” Alexander Skarsgård says, looking out to the yellow Katarina Church in Stockholm. With blue skies above it, the colours match his country’s flag. He grew up streets away, but mostly lives in the US, where he made his name in Zoolander and The Legend of Tarzan, plus the television shows True Blood and Big Little Lies. Oh, and Succession. He left his country 20 years ago, to become the screen hunk who brings more to a role than big hunks tend to. Yet as we look out to the graveyard, it seems that you can take the Swede out of Sweden, but even the most successful ones come back in the end.
He is sprawled on the sofa, legs spread like cranes. This is how he has to sit. The man is 6ft 3in. We have met to talk about The Northman, a violent, strange, brilliant Viking blockbuster with Nicole Kidman as Skarsgård’s difficult mother. But first a word on those Swedes because, for a country of just ten million people, they really do punch above their weight in the world.
Within minutes the actor mentions Abba, Vikings and Greta Thunberg. It is Swedish bingo. The tech pioneers Daniel Ek (Spotify creator) and Markus Persson (Minecraft) crop up. As does Skarsgård’s famous actor father, Stellan. Only Max Martin, who has written 25 US No 1s, is missing from this full house of Swedish soft power.
Skarsgård cycled past Greta on his way to meet me; she was on a protest. “She’s how we sell our country now,” he reflects. “And I almost hit her with my bike.” Skarsgård smiles. “Greta is like a modern-day Viking — and, like Greta, the Vikings refused to fly.”
Skarsgård ’s childhood was very Swedish. When he was a boy he played next to Viking rune stones on the island of Oland, and was allowed to pick Viking middle names for his younger brothers. For the first he chose Adolf, before his folks said no. Instead he went with Orm — which means snake. “I was used to being the oldest child and had a lot of attention,” he explains. “Then there was somebody cuter than me, so I called him snake.” He gave his other brother the name of a god whose brains are smashed into the sky. Still, the runes were magical to him, inscribed with Vikings who went to far-flung places.
No wonder Skarsgård was picked for Succession. If you need television shorthand for somebody young and a match for a business behemoth like Logan Roy, make them Swedish. Skarsgård’s Lukas Matsson is a rude revelation as the chief executive of the streaming platform GoJo, who may well have brought down the Roy media empire. The actor does not yet know if he is back for series four, but the word is that he will be.
The best scenes in series three were with Matsson and Logan Roy (Brian Cox) in the garden of an Italian villa. The men discuss takeovers until Logan begins a monologue about America . . .
“And Matsson drifts off,” Skarsgård says, laughing. “He is bored. There are all these sycophants in Logan’s life, including his kids — he is a demigod. So what is funny is when he talks about America, instead of going, ‘Tell me more!’ Matsson goes, ‘He talks a lot. I don’t really need him. He’s old and kind of boring.’”
It is a great role. But Skarsgård did not always have it so easy. Born in 1976, he started acting at seven, before quitting at 13. He had found fame in a TV show, but it was tough to have people talk about who you are when you do not yet know yourself.
National service followed, and then six months at Leeds Met studying English and living with a drug dealer. “I basically just hung out and had fun.” Then, seven years after he gave it up, he returned to acting.
“Dad was happy,” Skarsgård says. His father also made it big abroad in everything from Good Will Hunting to Mamma Mia!. “He’d come home from set when I was young and I’d think, ‘If he is having that much fun on a Monday morning, why am I against being an actor?’”
The visionary and bonkers Northman is his hardest role to date. Skarsgård is Amleth, a Viking prince avenging his father. In one extraordinary raid Skarsgård is half-naked, half-wolf, tripping, taking a chunk out of someone’s throat. He is naked and bloody a lot. Think the superb and ghastly Belarusian war film Come and See meets the vivid horror of Midsommar. Yet still you won’t be prepared for a nude Ethan Hawke barking like a dog. I am staggered, in an age of franchises, that this $90 million, weird violent epic was made. “So am I,” Skarsgård says.
Still, Amleth is exactly the sort of role that Skarsgård wants. A wish-fulfilment part that marries the Viking history that beguiled him as a boy with the challenging work that he did not get at the start of his career. After scoring a role in Ben Stiller’s fashion comedy Zoolander in 2001, offers dried up. “I was left auditioning to play the boyfriend of a girl who gets killed in scene four of a low-budget horror movie,” he says of Hollywood.
In Sweden he worked in films that barely paid enough to buy a ticket back to LA. That must have been depressing? “Absolutely,” he says. “I was questioning why I was in the industry.” It was not until 2008 that things changed, when The Wire’s creator David Simon cast him in his Iraq war HBO series Generation Kill.
Charlize Theron once said that it is hard for an actor to be hot. “When meaty roles come through,” she explained, “pretty people get turned away first.” Did Skarsgård have that experience? “As a good looking blonde woman,” he jokes, “I can relate.” He pauses and tries out a few answers.
“I don’t really know if that was the reason I wasn’t getting roles,” he explains eventually. “Starting out in Sweden, there was stuff about being tall and blond …” He laughs. “But most people here are tall and blond. Still, after my first job I was on a stupid ‘sexy hunky hot list’ and then people didn’t take me seriously. If you want characters with depth but have been labelled ‘a dude who takes his shirt off’, you’re not going to get those offers.”
He finds much of his Hollywood life bizarre. He’s dated a string of famous women including Alexa Chung and is a fixture on the gossip websites. But he’s not on social media, will never google his name. “This industry is incredibly ridiculous,” he says. “In meetings people are really insecure and eager to please. But it’s a strict hierarchy. If people at the top say something is good, people fall in line. Also, menial trivial bullshit stuff becomes very important to people. As an actor the value placed on how important something is can become laughable to me.” His real ambition is to have lots of kids. His twice-married father has eight. He wants nine.
Does he know people similar to his billionaire character on Succession? “A little — Stockholm’s a hub for people who start ridiculously successful companies. A lot are programmers, not dudes who got the girl. They sit in the basement and drink Dr Pepper then, suddenly, like the Minecraft guy, outbid Beyoncé on a house in the Hollywood Hills. I like the idea of Matsson being in that rat race of the ultra-wealthy, because it never ends. I’ve been on yachts and seen owners glance at the yacht next door, because it’s 5ft longer. It never ends, does it?”
Sure, but Skarsgård is an A-lister with access to great riches like his Succession role? “I live an incredibly privileged life,” he admits. At 45 he has a reported worth of $15 million. “I don’t really have to work — I’ve made enough. I could retire, which is extraordinary. But I don’t feel the need to broadcast that with expensive clothes or cars. That radiates insecurity. When you see somebody with a $1 million watch? That’s peacocking. It can feel like they’re overcompensating.”
We wrap up. He has a meeting, but then texts me to go out for a beer. When he turns up, he arrives on a bike with a practical handlebar basket and we talk town planning until a couple of friends turn up, one with a tiny baby. It couldn’t be more Swedish. He is wearing normcore chic like he has just walked out of a slightly more expensive H&M. He gets a few looks, sure, but he is at home here — and it is where he will end up.
Excerpt not included in the article (x):
"It was just a treat – when you have all those elements come together. A script that is so impeccable and tight. And someone like Jesse. Then you work with Brian Cox? It's the best ever. To play around with that was nice. I went straight from that villa to Iceland to shoot a scene of me as a viking slave in shackles, dragged through the mud. That was within 48 hours."
How not laugh when saying that daft, “You know Mark?” line? "There was a bit of, 'Will the audience clock it's Zuckerberg we're talking about?' In one version, I said, 'Zuck told me. Oh, you know Mark?' Then we just stuck with Mark. We tweaked it. It's constantly evolving."
The Northman opens on Apr 15

I’m going to put a finger on one of the reasons I think c!Technoblade has been frustrating me lately, and it’s a sentiment I think I’ve seen around dsmpblr quite a bit, but I want to elaborate on why I also think it is a thing.
I will preface this by saying that Technoblade is my favorite minecraft youtuber and streamer, and that I really enjoy his character. This is not a critique of Technoblade himself, but rather the writing of the Dream SMP. Now onto my critique.
Simply put: c!Technoblade is consistently narratively rewarded for his actions.
By this, I mean that c!Technoblade, along with c!Dream, is one of the few characters who the writing favors in every situation. You could say that the Butcher Army was a ‘punishment’ for him, but narratively speaking, it was actually a win for Techno. He came out of the situation not feeling defeated, but looking even more like a badass than he did before (see: the pickaxe scene with Quackity) and gaining even more potential justification in a meta-narrative sense (aka a greater reason for the fandom to sympathize with him when he destroys L’manberg).
In contrast, all the other major characters have had either in-story defeats or meta-narrative defeats, often times both. C!Wilbur was defeated in a meta-narrative sense by painting himself as a villain when he blew up L’manberg. C!Tommy has been defeated time and time again — November 16th, exile, Doomsday, etc. C!Tubbo was defeated by Dream when he was forced to exile Tommy, and again when Techno escaped execution; and both defeats gave him a more negative meta-narrative of being a dysfunctional president. C!Quackity was defeated by Technoblade by a pickaxe and came out of the situation seeming like a budding tyrant.
I feel like c!Techno has yet to face any major defeat. He was not defeated on November 16th. He was not defeated by the Butcher Army. He literally crushed his opposition on Doomsday. And throughout it all, he has been gaining a stronger, more positive meta-narrative so that all his wins are justified by the story — Phil’s house arrest, Carl’s capture, his attempted execution, Tommy’s ‘betrayal’, etc.
(Note: I am aware that as a fandom, especially on Tumblr, we have been critical of c!Techno. But I am looking purely at the writing of the story itself, and not our fandom reaction to it.)
Now here’s the question: Why has c!Techno yet to face any narrative punishment?
Well, I’d argue that there are meta reasons for this that have to do with the writing of the SMP.
Firstly, Techno the youtuber has a reputation to keep up.
Before joining the Dream SMP, Techno’s fandom catchphrases have been “Techno never dies!” and “Only coming 2nd? L”. Even if these catchphrases are jokes, there’s no denying that Techno the youtuber has cultivated much of his Minecraft fanbase by being good at Minecraft — destroying nerds in Skywars, crushing famous youtubers in Minecraft Monday, beating squidkid in the Potato War, etc. Technoblade’s fandom will make fun of him if he loses a fight.
In contrast, most of the other streamers on the SMP did not gain their initial, pre-SMP fame by being good at Minecraft PVP. Tommy became famous by scamming people in Skyblock. Wilbur did 100 player and YLYL videos. Quackity was a meme channel. Tubbo also made Skyblock videos.
This isn’t helped by the fact that Techno can easily combo most of the other players on the SMP to oblivion. The only person he’d probably struggle in that front is Dream, and— oh wait, they’re allies. Shoot.
Techno’s fanbase migrated to the SMP when he started making SMP content because it is extremely loyal to him. I mean, I was one of them, I would know. And Techno’s fanbase is accustomed to watching him win. This is probably one of the reasons why so far, he has yet to be narratively defeated.
Along with that, the writing of the SMP’s second season has trended towards shows of power.
The writing of the first season had wars, yes, but whoever won the actual fight was never the centerpiece of it. I think this has a lot to do with Wilbur being a non “minecraft for minecraft’s sake” youtuber in comparison to Dream. The L’manberg war ultimately decided by Tommy trading his discs, even though he lost the arrow duel. The election saga and the Schlatt fallout had minimal PVP conflict (no, I do not count Wilbur and Tommy running away from arrow fire as ‘PVP’). There wasn’t any real PVP fighting at the festival. Even the final war was light on the PVP — the central drama of that came from Wilbur pressing the button and Techno setting off the Withers; and that did not end up as an unequivocal victory for either of them.
In contrast, the second season has had a greater focus on who wins the straight-up fight. The Butcher Army loses because Techno beats Quackity in a fight. Techno, Dream, and Phil win Doomsday because they are clearly more powerful in a fight. Tommy’s recurring saga with Dream has yet to reward Tommy — it always ends with Dream beating Tommy down more; through emotional manipulation tactics, yes, but also because of the implicit sense that Tommy can not win against Dream in a straight-up fight. Tommy is focused on winning that fight with Dream on Wednesday.
The narrative has stopped rewarding people like Wilbur and Tommy, who can’t win straight-up PVP duels against Techno and Dream. There are exceptions to this — El Rapids, for example. But El Rapids has faded into narrative insignificance, and as such it has done nothing to reverse the narrative trend.
Now, I don’t think this problem is unfixable. Quite the opposite, actually — I think it’s easily fixed, as long as Techno suffers a canon death and is criticized for his actions on a meta-narrative level, the way most of the other characters have been.
Because simply watching a character win all the time is not narratively compelling. I really enjoy Techno’s character, and as such, I want to feel compelled by him. This is why I’m not criticizing his character here — rather, I am simply expressing my frustration at the way the narrative has interacted with his character.

i didnt even watch the stream today because I’ve basically lost all faith in every plot line besides dream, wilburs, and Tommy’s (maybe Tubbos but that ones on thin ice and even thinner considering the things I’ve seen on the timeline) and god they really are just messing up every single plotline and story beat just to make c!techno look good aren’t they.
My view of is character has gone from genuine enjoyment to confusion but hopefulness, and now to genuine hate. Like great job, in your quest to make your character absolved from all mistakes and flaws you’ve created the most dry, frustrating, confusing, and annoying character I’ve literally ever seen on this smp. And don’t get me wrong I like cc!techno a lot but I genuinely just don’t think he’s a very good writer, at least not from what he’s shown. Sure, he can execute cool scenes and has good ideas, but has no way to actualy use those things to create an interesting plotline. Which is fine, he absolutely doesn’t have to be particularly good writer to have fun on a Minecraft smp, but he has such an important character that it literally effects the entire plot as a whole.
which is why mocking those criticizing his writing because “he’s a English major” is such a ridiculous thing to do. going to college for something doesn’t automatically make you good at it. It’s not a skill you level up like in a video game. He clearly has a lot of knowledge about mythology and such but that doesn’t directly translate to being a good writer. (also,, didnt he drop out?? In like his second year?) it’s really not the “aha!” Moment people think it is.
like I’m sorry if you like his character or genuinely think he is a good writer but in my opinion c!technos storyline is literally the equivalent of a 12 year old warrior cats roleplayer on animal jam going *kills no miss* *dodges all attacks* and *destroys instantly no takebacks*
this wasn’t meant to be so long or so passionate but imjust genuinely pissed at the nosedive in quality the dsmp has taken especially with how excited I was about plot lines back in February that literally still haven’t gotten wrapped up.
Nah Anon, no need to apologize. I think I'm fairly open about my absolute dissatisfaction with c!Techno's writing and especially with the last stream.
Like, there were almost exclusively negatives about that stream. It was contrived, purely executed, and literally made to get another "cool" team up for c!Techno that was once again left completely unexplored and as a way to absolve c!Techno of all of his guilt because "c!Tubbo forgave him".
It was terrible writing pure and simple. And I really don't get why a cc like Technoblade who expressed multiple times that he'd like to keep his roleplaying lighthearted keeps getting involved with the plot about child abuse. Because it's not like he's ever gonna acknowledge that that's what the plot is about, just like he's never gonna acknowledge that c!Dream is a child abusing serial killer and that his character SHOULD REALLY KNOW ABOUT THE CHILD ABUSING PART, because that would make c!Techno a shitty person and cc!Techno is a c!Techno apologist first and a very bad writer second.
And, like, I don't care if people go "Oh but the plot wasn't ABOUT c!Dream and c!Tommy" Because yes it fucking was. They were just too afraid to acknowledge it because c!Techno can never have internal conflict or actually interesting external conflicts because that would make him a character and we can't have that!
So instead we leave c!Sam's actions making little to no sense because his whole character motivation is based on c!Dream and c!Tommy. Instead we leave c!Tubbo feeling like an uncaring asshole who laughs when seeing his best friend's grave and EXCUSES THE GUY WHO FREED HIS FRIEND'S ABUSER AND THE GUY WHO FRIED TO MURDER HIM. Instead we leave c!Eret to being the only one who has to earn forgiveness for the third time because every progress they make is always forgotten a stream later, while the guy who freed a child abusing serial killer just gets a pass because we're not allowed to mention what THE WHOLE PRISON PLOT WAS ABOUT.
Literally, this was so ridiculously bad it dropped c!Tubbo to the very bottom of the ladder for me in terms of enjoyment. Like, I NEVER disliked c!Tubbo before. Even when I disagreed with his choices he was at least consistent and interesting, now he's neither.
Heck he just joined the commune made by the two guys who blew up his home and who freed the guy who hurt his best friend time and time again and who publicly berated c!Tubbo in front of the entire server because he got manipulated by him and then tried to kill him, and I'm just supposed to look at that and say "oh yeah, it makes absolute sense that he would feel safe raising his kid around these people"????? Because, news flash, that's bullshit!
And all of this could be avoided if:
1) cc!Techno actually learned to take criticism to his writing instead to assume he's above it by default
And
2) He actually communicated with the rest of the server and learned what the plotlines he keeps getting involved with are about AND STOPPED FUCKING CHOOSING THE C!PRIMEBOYS ONES BECAUSE CLEARLY HE DOESN'T HAVE THE SKILLS TO HANDLE THEM

ok well c!shittypenis analysis essay under the cut
c!shittypenis is so fucking sad. let me explain.
during season 1, c!shittypenis was inseparable. they had the most beautiful relationship on the whole penissmp imo (you dont have to agree, that opinion does not affect the points made in this essay as i tried to keep it as unbiased as possible). c!penis kept c!shitty grounded when necessary and showed him the importance of sacrificing things for those you care about, while c!shitty helped c!penis be ambitious and stand his ground when necessary, showed him that he didn’t have to settle for anything less than what he deserved. if they hadn’t had each other, they wouldn’t have been able to survive the cockberg war and dethrone c!admiral_anal. and that was what made their love (whether you interpret it as platonic or otherwise) so special. it was about survival and growth, whereas so many others on the smp (eg c!hairballs and c!gargle) were about power, about one of them wanting something from the other. it was refreshing, the only reason cockberg won the war (c!pisskink69′s betrayal would have decimated them otherwise, since they had little to no resources or morale left afterwards), and the driving force between season 1.
but during season 2, we saw c!shitty slowly distance himself from c!penis. props to cc!shitty for this, because it was really fucking subtle. he showed up to the bridge where they would hang out less and less, didn’t help c!penis during the confrontation with c!milfboss that ended up taking one of his canon lives (which directly paralleled the fight with c!pisskink69 at balltown from season 1, but thats for another essay), among other things.
but it all culminated when he destroyed the bridge. the one they had built together at the start of season 1, the one they started a war for. and it was such a heartbreaking scene. cc!penis’s voice acting really does not get enough recognition. but im getting off topic. the point is, c!shitty did all this for one thing and one thing only: power.
after freeing cockberg and becoming vice chairman of the cabinet, he was in a vulnerable position: the war, especially c!admiral_anal’s threats towards c!penis, put him in a really bad mental state, one that made him doubt every decision he made and made him desperate for some kind of security. that combined with the amount power that being vice chairman held, just enough for him to see what it was like to have power but also leaving him hungry for more (if you still don’t believe this, rewatch the scene where he imposed taxes on c!glorp’s neighborhood, shitbitch, from the beginning of the season, it foreshadows the conflict super well), made him unable to resist c!bigfuckingboobs’s offer.
c!bigfuckingboobs is arguably one of the most, if not the most, powerful people on the server: she’s the richest member with the best pvp skills. if they teamed up, there was no amount of power he couldn’t have, no height he couldn’t reach. even if it meant cutting of his friends, it could guarantee them safety in the long run. it could be worth it. it was extremely risky, but then again, c!shitty was never one to shy away from risk. so he took it. c!bigfuckingboobs used this to manipulated him into craving more and more power, until she could use his position in the government and the distance he had placed between him and his friends to take over cockberg and either make it hers or destroy it.
that’s why c!penis killed c!clitoris on the ruins of the bridge. he saw what power was doing to his friend, and that was his ultimatum, his way of letting him know that he had gone too far. that was the reason c!shitty felt the need to distance himself from c!penis in the first place: the second c!shitty started craving more power, c!penis was wary, if not outright critical of it (dont forget that after the shitbitch dispute, c!penis went to c!hairball behind c!shitty’s back to try and take him out of office). however, he now had what season 1 c!shitty probably would’ve viewed as a valid concern, since the way he was acting directly paralleled c!admiral_anus. hence c!clitoris’s murder, which i personally don’t agree with, but i will say that many c!penis antis ignore the fact that, since its minecraft, pets arent regarded in the same way as they are irl, so while still bad, its not as harsh as many of them are making it out to be imo.
but anyway, c!shitty knew that c!penis was warning him. he knew. but the way c!bigfuckingboobs had twisted his worldview, he saw it not as c!penis trying to keep him safe, but as him dragging him down, trying to keep him from achieving what he wanted, which had originally been safety for c!penis and the others, but was now power for him and c!bigfuckingboobs. the meaning behind c!clitoris’s death, not the death itself, was what prompted the electric chair execution, which so many people seem to not understand.
and that was what was so sad about it: c!bigfuckingboobs was using the very things they had learned from and taught one another to turn them against each other. c!shitty’s ambition and what c!penis had taught him about sacrifice had caused him to take her deal and distance himself from c!penis in exchange for what he thought would guarantee them safety in the first place, while c!penis’s careful nature and the things he had learned from c!shitty about standing up for himself caused him to directly oppose him. this all led up to c!penis’s execution, directly paralleling c!hairball’s in the cockberg war arc.
c!bigfuckingboobs let them drive one another into ruins, because with that, the very foundation cockburg had been built upon would crumble, and she could take power without ever having to lift a finger. the war left c!shittypenis with different desires, and c!shitty’s desire for power and c!penis’s outright aversion to it due to his trauma with c!admiral_anal clashed and ruined everything they had once had. that is why c!shittypenis is the most heartbreaking dynamic on the penissmp, and why they are some of the best written narrative foils i have ever seen.
TL;DR: c!shittypenis contrast each other perfectly, and these differences ended up pulling them apart after the war for cockberg

Appreciation post for the eggpire and more during the red banquet cause I'm not seeing enough love for how well they organized and delivered and because I'm so proud of cc!Bad for how far the Bloodvines arc has gone ♥ (this stuff is from Bad's vod btw)
Also something to cheer people up a bit in case the lore got u hard like it got me cause I'm still not okay bestie <3
The starting soon screen being an animation (with glitches to show another frame!!) plus the jazzy electro-swing soundtrack underneath. Just such a good intro, I felt like I was actually in the waiting line for an event, just awesome.
Ponk. Just Ponk, dapper man, handsome Ponk just standing there. Gorgeous, thank you, standing ovation, I love him.
Just everything Bad and Ant did with the building of the room, the stairs!! The coat room!!! The statues right in front of the table, everything looked SO pretty.

"It's almost time for the feast. It's gonna be delicious." the foreshadowing
Everyone dancing together cwc
"minecraft dancing is speed squats" eret ilu
Bad and Ant complimenting moment ♥
The eggpire all on the same side of the table. Them
Ponk's little "Hello!" after Bad said he made the soup, plus everyone going "good job!!" just twt
When Bad started asking if anyone wanted to give a toast, I realized eventually that this was more of a disguised "Want to say your last words before death?" and it now sounds s o freaking cool. ye s
P O N K 'S S P E E C H
"you look beautiful right now" sam i will cry
When in the middle of his speech, Bad turns to Ant who's already looking at him, nods, Ant nods back, and as Bad turns around again we can see Ant walking away from his seat. I am OBSESSED with this scene, like you already know something is about to go down and oh gosh it was delivered so good
THE LAVA COMING DOWN FROM THE CEILING AS BAD KEPT TALKING, NONE NOTICING, HIM TALKING ABOUT HOW THE BANQUET WILL BE UNFORGETTABLE. SO HOT
"And yeah! Thank you for coming everybody" the little mischievous giggles right after "And prepare uh ... yep. Prepare to die." AND THEN HE FUCKIGN DRINKS FROM HIS GLASS LIKE COME ON YOU CANT BE ANY COOLER THAN THAT YOOO
"The leaf is staying the way it is" you can hear the laughter in his voice like HAH GOTTEM that's so good
Bad still giving Hbomb gapples cwc
"Where you looking for this perchance?" AND THEN EQUIPS THE ENTIRE ARMOR AND WEAPONS E Y E when the twists started dude. this si where the twists started and never ended
HANNAH CROSSING SIDES AND SIDING WITH THE EGGPIRE. QUEEN SHIT that was such a cool moment for her i'm so glad she's getting her moment
The eggpire laughing, just pure villainy, love them
"Time to get on the main event" the nonchalance. The way they equipped the crossbows and readied the arrows at the same time. B r u h fucking awesome they are
The eggpire faking being afraid when Sam was talking about blowing the egg up. Sad that we already knew about the obsidian thing, but still made it a very cool scene. Especially right after when they started laughing at them again. I don't know what it is about it but I love them being so sassy.
FREAKING EXECUTIONS THEY WORKED FOR MASS EXECUTIONS they were able to trap all those freaking people!! And trick them and counter attack all the time! what the fuck, I'm so impressed
Thank you Fundy for sounding super terrified /gen ♥
Wait ahah they really said EGGSECUTION-
THE EGG HATCHES THE EGG HATCHES THE EGG HATCHES im not saying IT but im saing Velvet
"Follow me! Follow me!" HANNAH SOUNDED SO ENTHUSIASTIC i love
"We trusted you!" "Well, that was your first mistake-" THE WAY BAD WAS ABOUT TO LAUGH. DUDE they definitely had so much fucking fun making this
sassyboyhalo
Foolish acting thank u ily. Also the thunder not working what the heck i wanna know what was going on inside his mind right then he sounded so lost. THE ACTING
"Sacrifice!" Hannah idk how to say this but I love you
ANT MOMENTTTT
When puffy called them selfish i was expecting bad to just do a huge double take. I wanted him to snap immediately PLEASE SNAP-
BAD DELIVERING AGAIN WITH THE AMAZING ACTING
"Not just for the egg but for what the egg is going to give us" he's so desperately trying to make them udnerstand it promised him his friend back he literally mentions it every single time but everyone calls him selfish because they think he wants power when he just wants skeppy's friendship back in this essay I will- Anyway yes I love that he never explicitly says it because it kills us viewers with pain cause we KNOW and then the reveal will be 100 times more powerful. This is so awesome
"I can't stop Quackity and you know why I can't stop. If I stop I can't get what I need." his voice grew so much lower like he's just holding back MAN I HH IT WAS SO GOOD
SECRET RETREAT ROOM YOOO
Ponk giving Bad some food and telling him to stay safe, Bad telling both Hannah and Ponk to stay safe too. My tears
And now the solo Bad lore part, where we actually see the true part of him that's absolutely devastated and makes me cry, the way he acted all confident and then saw everything crumble in a few seconds and now he's destroyed again because what if they find a way to destroy the egg what then? what if he never gets skeppy back? dude, you can just read his emotions it's so sad and i love how it was portrayed
"I know where I can go. I know who I can see!" BDI REF BDI REF FOR SURE I have a feeling that's going to be explained in the next lore stream with Skeppy and I'm so hype. I love the little crumbs of references here and there.
"But now they have it.." he sounded so broken??? bad your acting please ill cry
"I didn't really want to hurt anybody" his true self trying to get back cwc especially because he's farther away from the egg. I just love the transition between the guy Bad portrays who's so sure about the egg when it's in front of others and the doubts and anxiety he actually has when he's alone. Just so cool

with the school week coming to an end, kaminari, sero, kirishima, and ashido decided to have a fun night, dragging you and bakugo with them, whether you wanted to join in or not. everyone got in their pajamas, bringing snacks and various activities with them. when you got there, everyone’s doing something different. who’re you joining?
Tumblr media
ashido, trying to paint the boys’ nails
✿ well, at first it was just her nails that she was painting
✿ but she finished quickly and she was all sad
✿ “DAMN that was speedy as fuck iida aint got nothin on me but what tf do i do now”
✿ then she starts painting the boys’ nails
✿ started with kirishima but he was tryna fight an enderman and he got nail polish all over his thumb LOL
✿ when you join in you get denki to pull out cards with one hand so that you guys could paint the other
✿ gave him yellow nails with a black middle finger nail and honestly he’s liking it
✿ you two go around trying to paint the boys’ nails and running away from bakugo, before settling down in the middle of the room
✿ kirishima just got red nails, sero’s were multi colored, and bakugo allowed black nails but ONLY black nails
✿ you decide to add details to her painted nails as she plays with your hair, and you two end up watching the tv together cuddled up in a blanket for the rest of the night.
Tumblr media
sero, smoking out of the window on the bed
✿he was getting pretty lonely smoking that blunt by himself QQ
✿ but i mean the weed was delectable, chefs kiss 10/10 soooo he didn't mind
✿ he had the company of his tiktok for you page (and this mans is on DEEPTOK so yk that shit’s trippy as fuck)
✿ when you joined in he was quick to wrap his arm around your shoulders and pull you closer to watch videos together
✿ which meant every time you exhaled the smoke out of the window BEHIND you guys you had to turn your face towards him which made for some very,, unintentionally intimate moments
✿ “stop kissing over there!!” ashido would laugh every now and then, only leading to you being very flustered and sero yelling “we aren’t kissing!!!”
✿ you were indirectly kissing though, you were sharing a blunt
✿ might as well kiss already anyways >3< pucker up serito
✿ no matter what your tolerance to weed is, you ended up smoking wayyyy too much, but you were having a good time nonetheless.
✿ he took care of you the rest of the night, covering you, bringing you snacks and drinks, etc.
Tumblr media
kaminari, playing cah by himself
✿ no one wanted to play cards against humanity with him so he just played by himself
✿ anyone else watching the scene would say it was sad he was playing by himself but he was honestly having so much fun
✿ when you walked in he was cackling loudly, and when you joined him you asked what he was laughing about.
✿ he showed you a group of three cards that said “the entire internet: hours of fun. easy to use. perfect for a cat video so cute that your eyes roll back and your spine slides out of your anus!”
✿ what the FUCK is goin on man 🧍‍♀️
✿ you bet that you could beat him if you guys played together and so the battle started
✿ “hey baby, come back to my place and i’ll show you a micropenis” was his best one, but you won the game withhhh
✿ “when i was tripping on acid, a cooler full of organs turned into free samples.”
✿ it was so gross but fun, and you guys laughed the whole time as you continued, and the game lasted the whole night.
Tumblr media
kirishima, playing minecraft poorly
✿ when you walked in, mans was tryna beat an enderman with his LIL BLOCK FISTS
✿ you laughed and joined him, and once the enderman killed him you reminded him that he has to make a sword
✿ he hadn't even made a little hut at that point, he was just wandering around
✿ and he thought he could beat the frickin ENDERDRAGON LIKE THAT
✿as if,, his irl quirk,, would translate into minecraft,, um,,
✿ you start playing on separate controllers and you two became cute lil adventurers together !!
✿ the amount of villages you guys raided together before finally settling on a flower biome (!!) is too many to count
✿ you guys even got dogs and named them pebble, rock, and boulder !! cutest in da world
✿ he did lots of hunting and defending your little base cause he thought it was the manliest
✿ you did lots of farming and building, along with, well, pretty much everything else
✿ you guys would go mining together and he’d always share the ores and such that he got
✿ cute lil domestic minecraft playing. you guys stayed up the whole night playing the game
Tumblr media
bakugo, grumbling to himself in a corner
✿ he did NOT wanna be there bruh
✿ he was just in the mf corner, moaning and groaning about how this wasn't fun at all and he wanted to go to bed
✿ then you came and sat next to him and started talking
✿ as much as he enjoys your company he still felt like he had to do something or he was gonna fall asleep
✿ you two ended up leaving the group anyways, going over to the kitchen as you guys looked for something to cook or eat
✿ he decided to cook up some late night instant ramen and when he finished you guys sat on the counter and ate it together
✿ you burned your tongue a couple times and he told you to stop acting like the food’s running away from you
✿ fuckin bitch LMAO but he also bit his tongue so he got what he deserved
✿ you guys talked about everything and nothing, at times the conversation actually getting really deep, like what he genuinely wants for the future
✿ in the end, you got to spend a nice night talking with each other over some bomb ramen

OKAY time to talk about Pogtopia Wilbur because everyone should talk about him more
Disclaimer: c!wilbur is a bad person and his mental state is not an excuse for his actions but he is definitely not pure evil, so thats my point here basically
I’m gonna start this one off the same as my last one: Wilbur was never manipulative in Pogtopia. Honestly, I think the fandom has been overusing that word. The argument is supposed to be that Wilbur was attempting to manipulate Tommy into thinking that they were alone and were the bad guys, but my friends I hate to tell you this but that’s not manipulation, that’s a mental spiral and delusions. If Wilbur thought that everyone was on their side, this would be manipulation, but he really believed that they were all against them. From what he saw, his Lmanburg, the country that he bled and died for, that he cried every night over, was flourishing without him, and that made him believe that everyone was happy that him and Tommy were banished and in suffering. So yeah, definitely not manipulation.
NOW, about the whole idea that he didn’t care if anyone died. Yet again, wrong. He talked a lot of big game leading up to the Red Festival, a lot of “i dont care if anyone dies” and that he didn’t care about Niki. But if you look at his actions, you’ll see his words don’t line up with that idea. He made a deal with Tubbo that he would only blow it up if Tubbo gave the signal, giving Wilbur an easy way out. Plus, if you watch from his perspective as they watch Tubbo get executed, you’ll see he is worried about Tubbo and is completely shocked when Techno actually kills him. Yes, he starts frantically searching for the button with the intent to blow it all up, but he immediately drops his search once he hears that Niki might be in danger. I mean, he very well could have died right there. They were already out to kill him and then he put himself right out there on a silver platter? Sure Wilbur sure you don’t care about Niki /s. The very next day, he changes his story. We see that in the first ever button room scene with Tommy and Quackity. He says that this is the perfect time to do it because the only people that will be caught in the crossfire is him and Schlatt, and those are the only people he really wants gone. The only thing that stops him is Tommy telling him that if he does this right now, he wouldn’t just hurt himself but Tommy and Quackity too. So yeah, he can talk all he wants about killing everyone, but in the end he can’t do it.
Now, November 16. Oh boy this one hurt me so bad. I can’t take anything from this stream as pure evil. I just can’t. He was at the edge of his spiral. He was broken, and quite honestly he wanted his dad to be proud (i mean thats pretty canon I’d say). He thought that no matter what, even if they win, L’manburg, the country he made, is gone. And honestly, he was kind of right. If you look at New L’manburg, it was never going to be the haven that L’manburg was. That was gone, and that knowledge broke Wilbur. Was he right to blow it up? Absolutely not. But does that change how we should look at this? YES it should. Also, i think its kinda funny but everyone always says he blew up L’manburg and killed everyone but there were zero casualties that day other than him and Schlatt. I mean we can talk about how he killed Jack Manifold but i dont like that one much because at the time that he killed him, it wasn’t meant to be canon. But other than that he never had any canon kills, but everyone talks like he killed everyone there. I dunno, just something that bugs me sometimes. Also I don’t think this is acknowledged enough but his death was in fact an assisted suicide. That’s how far he was gone. That just feels really important to me.
So um yeah I think thats all, next up maybe i talk about L’manburg arc and how everyone who says that he’s always been evil is just very wrong. Also this is all /nm, its a minecraft roleplay at the end of the day, its just so fun for me to talk about
