"So you came to boast to me about raisin fuckin whiskey prices of me heh…" Alfie said, sipping Earl Grey tea from his cup, "It's not that I'm raising them-" "Don't give me the King's fuckin English, Nora. You know it pisses me off…" he responded as Eleanor sighed. She was always the one to be sent to Camden Town to talk to Alfie, yet for once, she didn't hate it, "I ain't raisin any fuckin prices of a ya Alf, just 'ear me out would you," batting her beady little hazel eyes, "Fine, but if I don't like it, pray that God does… You know I'm a religious man, so if God don't like it I-" "I just want you to raise the prices a little on The Shelby Limited accounts, is all." "First off, you fucking cut me off, so that was rude. Two, do you want Tommy Shelby, me best mate, to kill me," Alfie leaned in, that annoying gleam in his eyes that she hated so much from him, "Oh, you should get better friends…" she laughed, "And, no, I just want to kinda…" "Use your words, Williams…" "I just want to get him to trust me…" she mumbled as Alfie laughed, not at her but in disbelief, thinking that she could get a horse-like man like Tommy Shelby to trust her, "Lead 'em in with Cigarettes Whiskey then, dear," adding more sugar to his cup, "But whatever you do, don't trust em…" "That's what he said about you…" "And you didn't fuckin listen to 'im," "Why would I listen to the two-timing beautiful blue-eyed 'andsome devil of Small "eath who I'd give anything to be pushed up against a wall and kissed by-" "Bloody hell Eleanor if your skin wasn't already fuckin red, you'd be a freshly boiled lobster," Alfie said, nearly spitting out his tea, her tawny-colored skin blistering with the sensation of embarrassment, "I'm just trying to partner up with The Shelby Company…" she groaned as Alfie stared at her, "Either I'm going fuckin deaf, or I'm hearin you got a thing for Tommy?" "Me? 'ave a thin for Tommy Shelby, please." rolling her eyes as he took her tea cup from her, "Nora, God don't like liars, an besides, you can do so much better with any other bloke that ain't Thomas fuckin Shelby…" "But have you ever seen him…" she bit her lip, Alfie taking in the show before him, finding the situation humourous, "He's just so…" "Rotten?" "Seductive…" "Eh, he's a dog." "He's handsome." "Ever looked at Arthur. Now that's handsome…" "He's wise," "About fuckin horses…" "Alfie!" "Listen, Nora. I don't know what the hell it is you see in him, but A little friendly advice." "Yes,"
"Hope I'm not late, Solomons…" "Be careful…" he whispered as Eleanor looked up at Thomas. Alfie saw the sparks between them fly faster than a bomb during the war, "Ms. Williams…" "Mr. Shelby…" she walked towards him, "Still on for our meeting later?" "Of course…" he eyed her up and down as she walked out the door. Alfie was impressed. "I assume you two are gonna fuck." "How long did it take you to come up with that one, Alfie…" "Not long at all…" he laughed, "Not long at all…"

Chapter - 18
(Percy's POV)
We pull into the Amtrak station. The intercom told us we had a three-hour layover before departing for Denver. I woke Nora up.
Grover stretched. Before he was even fully awake, he said, "Food."
"Come on, goat boy," Annabeth said. "We're going sightseeing."
"Sightseeing?"
"The Gateway Arch," she said. "This maybe my only chance to ride to the top. Are you guys coming or not?"
Grover, Nora & I exchanged looks. I wanted to say no, but I figured that if Annabeth was going, we couldn’t very well let her go alone.
Grover shrugged. "As long as there’s a snack bar without monsters." Nora agreed with him.
The Arch was about a mile from the train station. Late in the day the lines to get in weren’t that long. We threaded our way through the underground museum, looking at covered wagons & other junk from the 1800's.
It wasn’t that thrilling, Annabeth kept telling us interesting facts about the Arch, & Nora passed me blue jelly beans, so I was okay.
I kept looking around, though, at the other people in line. "You smell anything?" I murmured to Grover. He stuck his nose up.
"Underground," he said distastefully. "Underground air smells like monsters. Probably doesn’t mean anything."
But something felt wrong to me. I felt like we shouldn’t be here. I held Nora's hand. She gave my hand a squeeze & I relaxed.
"Guys," I said. "You know the gods’ symbols of power?" Annabeth was in the middle of reading about the construction equipment used to build the Arch, she looked over.
"Yeah?"
"Well, Hade-"
Nora cleared her throat. "We’re in a public place...You mean, our friend downstairs?"
"Um, right," I said. "Our friend downstairs. Doesn’t he have a hat like Annabeth?"
"You mean the Helm of Darkness," Nora said. "Yeah, that’s his symbol of power. We saw it next to his seat during the winter solstice council meeting."
"He was there?" I asked.
She nodded. "It’s the only time he’s allowed to visit Olympus-the darkest day of the year. But his helm is a lot more powerful than her invisibility hat, if what I’ve heard.."
"It allows him to become darkness," Grover confirmed. "He can melt into shadow or pass through walls. He can’t be touched, or seen, or heard. And he radiates fear so intense it drives you insane or stops your heart. Why'd you think all creatures fear the dark?"
"But then...how do we know he’s not here now, watching us?" I asked. Nora looks at me.
"We don’t," She said.
"Thanks, that makes me feel a lot better," I said. "Got any blue jelly beans left?"
I’d almost mastered my jumpy nerves when I saw the tiny little elevator car we were going to ride to the top of the Arch, & I knew I was in trouble.
I hate confined places. They make me nuts. We got shoehorned into the car with this big fat lady and her dog, a Chihuahua with a rhinestone collar.
I figured maybe the dog was a seeing-eye Chihuahua, because none of the guards said anything. We started going up, inside the Arch.
I’d never been in an elevator in a curve, & my stomach wasn’t happy about it. Nora rubbed a soothing thumb over my knuckles in reassurance. I gave her a grateful smile in return.
"No parents?" the fat lady asked us. She had beady eyes; pointy, coffee-stained teeth; floppy denim hat, a denim dress that bulged so much, just like a blue-jean blimp.
"They’re below," Annabeth told. "Scared of heights."
"Oh, the poor darlings."
The Chihuahua growls. The woman said, "Now, now, sonny. Behave."
The dog had beady eyes like its owner. I said, "Sonny. Is that his name?"
"No," the lady told me. She smiled, as if that cleared everything up.
At the top of the Arch, the observation deck reminded me of a tin can with carpeting. Rows of tiny windows looked out over the city on one side and the river on the other.
The view was okay, but if there’s anything I like less than a confined space, a confined space six hundred feet in the air. I was ready to go pretty quick.
Annabeth kept talking about structural supports, & how she would’ve made bigger windows, & see-through floors.
She probably could’ve stayed there for hours, but luckily the park ranger said, the observation deck was closing in few minutes.
I steered Grover, Nora & Annabeth toward the the elevator, & was about to get in, when I realize there were already two tourists inside. No room for me.
The park ranger said, "Next car, sir."
"I’ll get out," Nora said. "I can wait with you."
But that was going to mess everybody up and take even more time, so I said.
"Naw, it’s okay. I’ll see you at the bottom."
"Promise, you'll come back to me?"
"I promise, Nora."
She was reluctant, but let the elevator door slide shut. The car then went down the ramp.
The only people left on the observation deck were me, a little boy & his parents, the park ranger, & the fat lady with her Chihuahua.
I smile uneasily at the fat lady. She smiles back, her forked tongue flickered between her teeth. Wait a minute. Forked tongue?

New from the USA Today bestselling author of The Girl in His Shadow! Women's work is a matter of life and death. Nora Beady, the only female student at a prestigious medical school in Bologna, is a rarity. In the 19th century women are expected to remain at home and raise children, so her unconventional, indelicate ambitions to become a licensed surgeon offend the men around her. Under constant scrutiny, Nora's successes are taken for granted; her mistakes used as proof that women aren't suited to the field.Everything changes when she allies herself with Magdalena Morenco, the sole female doctor on-staff. Together the two women develop new techniques to improve a groundbreaking surgery: the Cesarean section. It's a highly dangerous procedure and the research is grueling, but even worse is the vitriolic response from men. Most don't trust the findings of women, and many can choose to deny their wives medical care.Already facing resistance on all sides, Nora is shaken when she meets

The Girl in His Shadow
I stumbled upon this while looking for other ebooks. It was part of some reading intiative (that I didn't read up on), so I figured I'd give it a shot. Average overall despite a good premise.
In 1830s, women are't allowed to practice medicine. Protagonist Nora Beady wants that to change. She was orphaned when she was very young and taken in by surgeon Dr. Horace Croft. He is described on the flap as "eccentric". If the shoe fits...
Croft teaches Nora medicine under his eye. She excels in art and draws for him detailed sketches to help his work, and as she reaches adulthood, she is his assistant. This is all in private with only the two of them and the housekeeper knowing. That is until Dr. Daniel Gibson comes to study under Croft.
Strong start. Then it got a little drawn out. Then the true conflict comes in which finds Nora having to make what seems like an easy decision at the time but comes to haunt her and those she works with. The end was good for what it was; this is the first in a series.
Three stars. I will not continue with this series.

Another character study for Doctor Moreau!
I’ve chosen to take a lot of creative liberties with this character (More than many of the others). Moreau is a proud man with significant concern for privacy. He was once well-respected for his craft, but his groundbreaking achievements in vivisection weren’t so easily accepted by the public.
He’s one of the first members of the association you encounter upon arriving in the big city, and if you choose to take his route you will find that the years spent “taming” his unfortunate beast-people altered him in more ways than even he realizes.
(His appearance is loosely based on an old teacher of mine...)

Early Bird (short story, contd.)
“The heart has different rooms. If he’s in one of the rooms, I can see you in one of the other ones, right?”
“I guess so.” Nora nodded toward my empty coffee cup. “But I’ll need one of those too to get the motivation.” And so we went to that same café near my house and talked more. I decided we should leave it at that and we said goodbye. We didn’t see each other for a few days. Then I matched with this other girl on Kord who also liked Thriller. What do you know? It was amazing. I messaged this girl, saying, “I didn’t know that so many people liked graveyards.” There was no response and I thought that I must have sent a bad message.
I saw Nora again the next week. It was still quiet in the streets with the covid pandemic and we peered into store windows to see which ones were open. She didn’t want to see her family for Christmas. I said I understood—it was difficult travelling. But it sounded like there was something more. Her voice shook when she spoke about her parents, so I knew it was bad. She said they were in England. I said “Oh. Well, you know, life is just impossible. So who cares anyway.” She was silent after that, and we were just as quiet as the storefronts. I did not take her home and the next day I got a text from the other girl who had liked Thriller. She said that she didn’t like graveyards, unless it was very early in the morning. “How early?” I asked and she said 7 o’clock. I said that was fine, even though inside I didn’t feel like it was. Some people wake up early; I didn’t. Those people see life as a river and they want to get on the water first to get ahead. I admired them, but I didn’t like them so much. I saw this girl, whose name was Holly, because I figured that Nora and I weren’t officially going out yet. Holly wore a brown jacket and a hat, and had dark lipstick on. She was sitting on a bench waiting for me with her legs crossed, as if she had been there for an hour. She looked at me with beady eyes. “Thank you, I’m good,” she said, even though I hadn’t asked her.
“I’m sure you are. This is your time of day.”
“You agreed to this.”
“If I woke up this early every day, I’d be a rich man,” I mumbled as we started walking toward the gravestones. “You’re not?”
“I had student loans, okay?” We didn’t joke with each other that much, at least in terms of tone, and we had these kinds of terse exchanges. I took her home that night and we fucked. I found out she was a director of movies. That impressed me. I wanted to be in one of them. She told me I could be in a death scene. “Please let me be in a life scene,” I said.
November became December and I had to choose with whom to spend more time with—Nora or Holly. Holly had the name for that time of year; Nora had the personality. She was going to England after all to see her family. I said I would take her to the airport. I did have a car. We hadn’t even kissed, but I liked her very much. It would be a good time to kiss her at the airport, when we said goodbye. I hoped she wouldn’t be crying. She was a very gentle girl. Holly, instead, was a go-getter. And me—I was just a funny guy.
“Have you seen the movie City of Women?” Holly asked me as we were lying in bed. “By the director Fellini. It expresses his fears of women. Are you like that? Are you afraid of me?” “No. I’m too lonely to be afraid. That’s why I met you in a graveyard.” “I see. It’s like you welcome the ghosts in your life.”
I could see that our whole relationship was tinged with death, and I had no idea why. Oh yeah--“Thriller.” But I didn’t know if I liked that song as the other things in my life. Like coffee and sweets, and love.
“We should both be a little more quiet with each other,” I said, and then we fell asleep. The next morning, I woke up to take Nora to the airport—bright and early.

A Little Snippet
So, I’ve been thinking lately about how Max is literally an aerodynamic engineer (Rocket Scientist) and all the fanfiction potential that has and was like, “I know what to do! I’ll write a fic!” so here I am! I hope you like it, it’s a tiny snippet that might develop into something bigger!
DISCLAIMER: THE NAMES MENTIONED HERE ARE IN NO WAY ASSOCIATED WITH PEOPLE IN REAL LIFE!
Title: Mr. Thunderman, Your Son is a Rocket Scientist
Words: 719
Genre: Family, Friendship, Humor
-0-
Max Thunderman was many things. Charming, cocky, confident, y' know, all that jam. The one thing that he prided himself on the most though, was being a genius.
His siblings were a bunch of simple people. Phoebe excelled academically and so did Nora, while Billy was average at best. Max, however, never cared enough about school to legitimately try at anything he took.
Indeed, he never did try. Not even when major science events took place since, 'The nerds will be waaaay too excited and I have a reputation to uphold!', and so, it was with great surprise that Saturday found Max pacing frantically in his lair looking, for once, incredibly frazzled.
"Geez kid, what's got your knickers in a twist?" Colosso asked quite irritably as Max mumbled something for the nth time since he woke up.
"It's just- Colosso, my school is hosting a science fair!" Max stressed as he ruffled his hair nervously.
"So? You usually don't care enough about those!"
Max rolled his eyes, "Did you seriously listen to nothing I told you yesterday?"
Colosso's beady eyes found the ceiling, looking quite interested in the way the architecture looked.
Max sighed heavily and dropped on his bed, looking incredibly stressed, "Colosso," He started slowly, "This year, Hiddenville High is hosting a nationwide science fair. Do you have any idea what that means?!" Max's voice was tinted with urgency as it went up a few octaves.
Colosso hm' ed slightly but, inevitably, shook his head. He would have shrugged, had he been able to, but with this body, he'll have to settle for more obvious gestures.
Max groaned as he lay back on his bed, his feet dangling off the edge, "World-renowned scientists will be the judges Colosso- Really famous authorized scientists!"
Colosso was silent for a moment and Max's anxiety skyrocketed. He knew he was a genius. He was. No one could create as many gadgets he regularly did and most, if not all, worked. However, he found himself in doubt. Was he skilled enough to impress some of the best scientists the nation has to offer? Did he possess enough knowledge to pull off a stunning invention by the time the science fair starts? Was he-
"And who are all the scientists attending this thing?" Colosso's voice broke Max from his anxiety-induced musings and he found himself struggling to remember the names of the scientists attending.
"I wasn't paying much attention," Max admitted quietly, "But I do know that Robert Lee is one of the judges."
"Ah," Colosso nodded, "Well then, it's no wonder you're stressed! You practically live and breathe that man's research papers!"
Max rolled his eyes and rolled on his side to face Colosso, "With good reason too! That man is one of the best aerodynamic engineers NASA has to offer!"
"And you said he's going to be a judge in this science fair?"
"Yeah!"
"And how long do you have until then?"
Max bit his lip slightly and rolled on to his back to face the ceiling, "I dunno. Didn't focus much until Principle Bradford mentioned Robert Lee. I'll just have to ask Phoebe about it."
Colosso nodded slowly, "Alright then, and what will you do for that fair?"
Max sighed tiredly, "I don't know. I have over a million ideas that I'm itching to plan out but none of them feel good enough-"
"I'm gonna stop you right there." Colosso interrupted with a stern tone.
Max blinked and tilted his head to look at his furry best friend, "Wha-"
"Max Thunderman, I'll come outright and tell you, you're a genius," Colosso stressed.
Max furrowed his brows in confusion, "Well, yeah. I already knew that-"
Colosso shook his head, interrupting him for the third time in a row, "You don't understand what I'm saying Maxie. You know you're a genius, right?"
Max nodded, feeling dumb. What was Colosso playing at?
"Then what are you worried about? You designed over 20 rockets and over a hundred different gadgets on your own. I think you'll be fine."
Max blinked rapidly as he looked at his best friend. Honestly, that kind of belief-
"Thanks, man," Max choked out quietly.
Colosso puffed out his chest proudly, "Save that! You better start on your project soon! For all we know the fair might be this Monday!"

Note
for the WIP game “gaze” and “help” ❤️
Nora watches as the girl’s piercing gaze shifts from her two flimsy bags to her outfit. And when Nora watches beady hazel eyes take in her old white tank top, her mom’s grey knit cardigan, thrifted bootcut jeans, and sandals from two summers ago, Nora’s never wanted to disappear more in her life.
&
She tries not to stare, but she honestly can’t help it, because the images of topless mermaids and shaded roses and thick anchors and anatomically correct organs is causing her head to spin.
Send me a word and I’ll answer your ask with the sentence it appears in!
