Why Zagreus is such a good character
*Obligatory Hades spoiler ahead* Zagreus is so so so interesting from a meta perspective. While his design certainly went into the "attractive bad boy" direction, he is not your usual hyper-masculine protagonist.
Definitely not!
It starts off with his physique, which is not that of a tall, beefy body builder, but more of an ancient greek athlete. He is also shorter than most other Gods, of average size by mortal standards, and doesn’t take kindly to people making fun of his height. I find that a fascinating character design choice to make. From there, let's continue with his character.
Tumblr media
His temperament is sanguine; he is a ray of sunshine and loves to share all the warmth that rests in his heart. Which is a fascinating trait to have as Prince of the Underworld, who is veiled in Darkness by Mother Night, Nyx, herself. The following Berserk quote comes to mind: "He who bears light exists in the deepest shadow".
Tumblr media
(There is a big conceptual overlap between Hades and Berserk, but I’ll just leave it at that for this post)
Zagreus is a sociable, extroverted type who values family and bonds over everything, is respectful, polite, charming. From someone like him, genuine kindness and honesty are a guarantee. Together with his capacity to empathize, it allows him to form meaningful relationships. His noble spirit and attitude are befitting of a prince. He does not mind stepping out of his comfort zone and challenge himself, either.
When you first beat Hades, he asks Zagreus to tell Persephone that Cerberus is doing well. Zagreus instead demanded an answer for a question in exchange of telling her. However, this question was left unanswered as Hades was taken by the Styx before he could reply. Later on, because Zagreus is a good-natured person and knows his priorities, picking his mother’s needs over the grudge he could hold against his father, he tells Persephone anyways.
Tumblr media
There are moments in the game where he is sensitive, observant and catches up on social cues very quickly. He listens to others and apologizes to them when he feels like he may have overstepped a boundary, such was the case when Thanatos berated him for allowing Orpheus visiting his muse Eurodyce and meddled into their affairs without their consent.
Sometimes he appears to have troubles expressing what he feels, or is perhaps insecure or anxious to express it (particularly when interacting with Meg, who is rather intimidating). But despite his hesitations and fears I think he is still doing a good job at it.
Judging from a brief conversation with Alecto, he appears to know how to form healthy habits and deal with difficult situations in a productive, nurturing manner (the fact that 1. Alecto doesn’t take kindly to his attempts at getting along and 2. Zag doesn’t like her for it, is kinda funny to me). He is capable to mediate and settle conflicts between people, this is literally one of the game's primary goals.
Tumblr media
Judging by what happened between him and Megaera, it appears he also wasn't always this mature and went a long way learning from his mistakes. His sometimes boastful confidence and his running mouth probably were one of them. Regardless, I'm deeply impressed with Zagreus' emotional intelligence and maturity.
Considering how so many other protagonists typically are characterized, this such an unusual way to write a male one, and as such he really stands out.
I believe it is absolutely necessary that protagonists like him exist and we honestly do need more like him: as these shine a different light on nurturing masculinity and what it can be.
Zagreus is not less of a man because of the radiant and kind person he is. Quite the opposite so, I personally find him extremely attractive (he’s doing things to me oml). He is just being himself: unfiltered, optimistic, with a good sense of humor. He is not even trying to fulfill any gender roles in any shape or form, simply embracing the bonds he has for what they are, living the moment. He does whatever it takes to make the world around him a better place and make the people around him happier. And he started doing that once he stopped running away from his problems.
This reassurance is something boys and men (including those who identify as such) urgently need nowadays.
PS: I’m still not over the fact he canonically likes plushies, the lil dork

I think the reason some people aren't taking the 'sister' comment in the way I believe Ashton meant it is because Laudna referred to Imogen in a similar manner, so I wonder if they assume they'll follow that same direction?
I mean. Laudna did, in fact, mean that comment platonically, to the point that Laura, as Imogen, was fully expecting a rejection and the consequences thereof, and now has painted herself into the corner of making a heroic but rather painful to watch effort to make something of it while Laudna continues to be like yes I have a girlfriend! anyway let's wander off while dancing, let's fail to answer any of her questions, let's literally need to be walked through the attempts at Battle Couple maneuvers, and generally act as some kind of monkey's paw object lesson in why you better let the fuse of a slowburn actually burn slowly. Anyway, as I've said, I don't care for the very saccharine OOC Love Marriage Baby Carriage fanon that's been present for Ashton and Fearne, and am pro their casual hookup, but like...honestly? Were I capable of placing curses, which I am unfortunately not, I would curse every ship I did not care for to become canon the way Imogen and Laudna did. Which is to say, if you do ship Ashton and Fearne, go for it, but you should be on your knees begging to whatever you believe in and possibly some things you do not that this does not follow the current pattern, at least, of Imogen and Laudna.
Secondly, I have not done my time in fandom, watching people with truly the most rancid only child energy bleat "omg besties! siblings!" at every ship they not-so-subtly wanted to sink, only to watch those same dullards be like "no but when it happens in canon with my ship it's different." Or at least, I am watching this because it is happening, but I am not taking them remotely seriously. Hypocrisy is terrible for a lot of reasons but its one saving grace is it is a double-edged sword; anyone trying to dance around this has completely shredded their capacity to ever again play the "um actually I see them as siblings so it's kinda gross that you ship them" card along with, to be honest, their general credibility, and like, really. For this?
Thirdly, if people look at two characters and say well THIS happened once so it DEFINITELY will happen again with two ENTIRELY DIFFERENT PEOPLE with ENTIRELY DIFFERENT HISTORIES and ENTIRELY DIFFERENT MOTIVATIONS that's dumb as hell. We don't have to pretend like it isn't dumb as hell. This is neither how people nor causation work. I mean it could happen, but that's because coincidences happen. I certainly wouldn't use it in any sort of serious argument.
And finally, I don't know how to put this more nicely, and as you'll see in a moment I have a vested interest in not bothering to, but playing pro bono public defender for bad takes in my inbox (let alone when I'm not even the OP of the post I assumed prompted this?) is at least intended to be so utterly thankless by design that I don't know why this is the second time this week someone has voluntarily done it unless you're trying specifically to evoke this particular flavor of breathless rant from me in which case you could just give me a topic and ask nicely; I would gladly oblige.

Something from Hazel's FLCL video that caught my eye was this one shot manga Dirty Work, co-written by FLCL character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto. There is a scene in Episode One of FLCL where Mamimi, in response to Naota's (petulant) ask about her feelings for his absent brother/her quasi-ex, responds:
...Watermelon. Or like a panda with a mean face.  Or like sandals with pressure points drawn on them.  Or the smell of a blackboard eraser.  Or a Sunday morning, where you wake up and it’s raining.
Tumblr media
Its a meandering and mysterious response, but still one that gets the point across. This dialogue was apparently written by Sadamoto entirely on his own insistence, and he claims to have something of a predilection for it, a love for the meandering, obtuse, poet-girl.
Dirty Work is the most clear example of this fetish from Sadamoto's other creations - its a ~20 page story of a teen guy, the childhood best friend who lives at a chicken farm he is in love with, and the people she asks him to beat up or kill who have wronged her. With a duo who, by the way, make it hilariously apparent this is from the character designer for Evangelion:
Tumblr media
That is just Shinji and like a Misato/Asuka cross, some of the mannerisms are absolutely identical, its great. It also has some fashion that is really on point:
Tumblr media
Ngl I might steal this look. And in continuing the predilections of Sadamoto, Evangelion, and the 90's Gainax psycho-sexual oeuvre, it also fulfills its duty to the otaku nation by have an out-of-nowhere dubiously consensual grope scene! The guy knows what he likes, okay?
But Dirty Work is not really about any of that; instead it is about the limits of longing and your own capacity, or even desire, to bridge the gap. Our girl Kana knows that our boy Tatsuo here is in love with her, and uses that knowledge for her own ends, sure, but she has no plan herself. That control is about the only agency she has in a life otherwise ruled by passivity:
Tumblr media
Tatsuo and her are both stuck in their place - but that isn't as bad as it sounds. For one this is clearly an erotically tinged passivity; a manipulative girl keeping a guy on a leash with crumbs of sexual favours in return for acts of violence? Fucking hot, and not a dynamic foreign to FLCL! But that eroticism is elevated by Tatsuo claiming that "when he is reincarnated" (aka metaphorically when he changes who he is) he will win her over, and she replies that she doesn't want that:
Tumblr media
And bam, that is our Mamimi sequence. To explain that last section, future panels will tell you that in chicken coops (like Kana's) light bulbs are used at night to convince the chickens more days are passing so they lay more eggs; a symbiotic-but-frozen relationship.
You can treat Mamimi and Kana's lines here as simple indulgences, playful poetry, but it really works for me. Doraemon & Cutie Honey, protractors and compasses, Jenni - okay we are just gonna ignore that line, we can't nail it every time - all these things are kind of great for their differences, right? You don't want to unify them, they are connected, but not fully, and its better that way. Kana is never leaving home, she is gonna run her mom's chicken coop, Tatsuo is never getting with Kana, which you could view as negative...or you could just not, and instead as a (*cough* erotic *cough*) dynamic with its own power. This line sells that, as does the last part of the manga:
Tumblr media
Being the lightbulb to a chicken is beautiful too sometimes.
Which brings us all the way back to Mamimi. Mamimi is not Kana, her story is not her story - she is in way worse straits, and she is going to change, dramatically so, over the course of the show. But in Episode 1 you are seeing her through Naota's eyes, the simultaneous object of his disgust and desire. The way that she claims to love Naota's brother while being sexually intimate with Naota in said brother's absence, the way she clings to his memory despite him having completely moved on from her, Naota views this as wrong and maybe pathetic:
Tumblr media
And you, the audience, agree with Naota, because its his story, and you don't spend a lot of time in Episode 1 in Mamimi's head. You see Mamimi's lines about watermelons and sandals and shit as an affectation and a cope.
Now, though, I can view them as a reference, as the way Mamimi sees herself - as Kana does. Dirty Work had 20 pages to sell me on how Kana's stasis is kindof beautiful, and Mamimi is a dead ringer for the same mold. More pathetic externally of course, but a match internally. It doesn't last, it doesn't even last this entire scene, but in her mind this relationship is giving something that change is not going to replace.
Or I mean probably Sadamoto has a fetish for cryptic poetry girls and this was his moment to shine. But I like my take better.

The Starless Sea Book Review
Tumblr media
The Starless Sea Book Review by Erin Morgenstern
This book made me feel like I was drowning.
In honey.
If you don’t get that reference, don’t worry. Morgenstern will beat you over the head with it every single chapter until you can never see honey the same way again.
Now, I feel like I’m in an odd camp where I actually haven’t read Morgenstern’s famous masterpiece The Night Circus. I’ve always wanted to get around to reading it, but it always seemed to slip right past my to-be-read pile.
So when The Starless Sea came out, I thought yes! This is my chance to get in on a Morgenstern book early.
Too bad I didn’t like it.
The Starless Sea starts off really interesting. There’s a series of vignettes that hook the reader right away, including a pirate and a girl, an acolyte in training, a dollhouse village, and a fortune-teller’s son. The fortune teller’s son turns out to be the main protagonist of the novel—Zachary Ezra Rawlins.
Zachary Ezra Rawlins is a hermit-like young man in his mid-20’s studying game design. He ends up finding an old book at his university’s library in which his real life childhood memory is one of the chapters. The other chapters of this old novel? All chapters that we as readers have been consuming since the first page. Very meta, Morgenstern.
Understandably baffled, Zachary Ezra Rawlins sets on a quest to uncover the book’s secrets, leading him to the very real underground world of the Starless Sea, including its inhabitants, puzzles, and magic.
Throughout the journey, Zachary Ezra Rawlins meets other characters connected to the Starless Sea in some capacity and finally gets the answer to the question that has plagued him since childhood: what would have happened if he had opened that door?
I genuinely wish I could go more in depth about this book’s plot, but there’s only one main problem—this book doesn't have a plot. Go ahead and read that sentence again. I’ll state it once more for good measure: As an objective third-party outsider with absolutely no stakes in the matter, The Starless Sea contains no discernible plot to speak of.
I can say that the plot was a convoluted mess that didn’t make any sense. Zachary Ezra Rawlins (yes, it does get annoying repeating this again and again, yet Morgenstern opens every chapter with it) goes deep down underground past the Harbor into the Starless Sea for…reasons.
He encounters numerous puzzles and magic and lots of rooms that Morgenstern likes to describe in excruciating detail, mainly that they’re dripping in honey and occupied by cats. The other people he encounters don’t answer most of his questions, leaving the reader bewildered and frustrated.
One character in particular is a man that Zachary Ezra Rawlins falls in love with for seemingly no reason at all. They have about three stunted conversations, including one where the other man whispers menacingly in his ear in the dark about bees and owls and swords for ten minutes, and then Zachary Ezra Rawlins is risking life and limb in the abyss of the Starless Sea to rescue him.
Another character is trying to blow up the Starless Sea for inane reasons that don’t make sense, but essentially get boiled down to she’s trying to protect it.
The other characters include Zachary Ezra Rawlins’ college friend who gets way more page time than she needs to, the keeper of the Starless Sea that answers nobody’s questions, Mirabel who is apparently the embodiment of fate, and her parents, who have been trapped in time and space for…a long time?
None of these characters called to me. None of them were awful, but all of them outside of Zachary Ezra Rawlins were either too brief, underdeveloped, or abstract for me to connect with on any kind of emotional level.
I wanted to connect to Zachary Ezra Rawlins, but none of his actions held much depth, his thinking was too shallow, and his commitment to his love interest Dorian actively didn’t contain any kind of logic or understanding.
You might be wondering: if she didn’t like the nonsensical story or the characters, did she like anything?
Indeed, I did. The setting of The Starless Sea was really incredible. I’m always in awe of people’s creativity and imagination, both qualities Morgenstern seems to have in droves. The descriptions of the rooms, the Harbor, and the Starless Sea itself were all intricate, beautiful, and extremely symbolic.
I wish I could say that I liked Morgenstern’s writing, but it really grated on me. What started off as moving writing, well-crafted sentences, and intentional symbolism turned into a repetitive slog that drove me up the wall.
I like symbolism as much as the next person, especially subtle symbolism, but Morgenstern’s symbolism is the opposite of subtle.
Morgenstern’s symbolism wants to beat you over the head with a key. Or a bee. Or a sword. Or a crown. Or an owl. You get where I'm going with this. What could have been a really cool series of motifs turned into a pretentious drone that aggravated me more and more as I continued to read.
Overall, I was really disappointed with The Starless Sea. With a little more plot direction, tightening of the characters, and less symbolism, The Starless Sea could have been an alluring and fantastic read to rival the everlasting fame of The Night Circus.
As it stands, however, The Night Circus would only need to contain a recognizable plot to be better than The Starless Sea for me.
Recommendation: If you are a Morgenstern fangirl and will be reading The Starless Sea regardless of what I say, fantasize about the incredible setting of The Starless Sea and hope to forget about everything else. If you’re like me and haven’t delved into Morgenstern’s worlds just yet, start and end with The Night Circus.
Score: 4/10

hii just letting you know that all your work related to v1s creators especially with me having an oc (Amit) who originally created blood fuel... though they're pretty different as they DO regret what they did and refuse to admit they're proud of how far the machines have come.
i see that you do something with its creators and i EXPLODE
anyways. i wonder if some of its creators regret any of their actions. Maybe before or after seeing the violence it causes. Maybe even trying to shut the project down completely? Every person is different and im sure people had conflicting ideas about something like this idk. Some may have been proud to create something as complex, while others maybe just be doing it because its seen as necessary for the war. Idk i just want to know your thoughts on its creators! :]
WAUUUUGHHHHH AMIT IS SUCH A GOOD OC,,,,,if i can just. tell you how much i enjoy their concept for a second because i think you REALLY nailed the feel of ultrakill with them, like they suit the universe incredibly well and perfectly slot into the lore in their design + punishment. ESPECIALLY especially because we now know the machines are partially flesh, and so it's this ultimate, horrible end to that idea, to have the soul now locked into the machine in the same way. that soul still "living" still conscious of itself and what it must do, what it has done, UGH i love love their whole thing. im sorry if im bad at expressing my thoughts, im just so impressed by them, the execution is stunning!!!!
BUT OK YES YEA I LOVE V1'S CREATORS.....OR THE IDEA OF THEM....i think of them as a core team of 3 people, "named" for the three wisemen of the bible - melchior is the lead designer, while balthazar creates the software and caspar creates the hardware and they're. eccentric as a group to say the least.
melchior is by far the most detached from what they're making, instead viewing v1 as a piece of art, a magum opus before their inevitable death. it's not really in a mad scientist way, melchior just genuinely believes they can achieve a machine that is far beyond what has been produced before and will live on far into the future to challenge newer generations (they don't really conceive of war ever ending, and instead think of life in terms of conforming to and building around war). i talked about them a bit earlier, but they have dealt with severe lung damage from the air that has left them in progressively declining health which contributes a lot to their focus on v1.
balthazar is the most level-headed in viewing v1 for what it is and is the most conflicted about what they're all making. he must constantly push its ai, improving it over and over again into an uncomfortable territory of adaptive intelligence for what it must do, and knowing how smart previous generations have been, balthazar is aware v1 could achieve advanced sentience. they have to do this, they have to find a way to stop the earthmovers, but what can the ultimate war machine be with a thinking mind? it's existential dread that largely grips balthazar, but the concerns are unheard by melchior who only enthuses about the idea of it.
caspar is desperate for v1 to end this, she is so exhausted with living in suits, in heavy gas masks, never seeing the sky or breathing the air like people once did. she makes whatever melchior wants work and she can often be found removing her gloves and lifting her visor to feel and see v1 directly (both caspar and melchior snap at her for this, but she always ignores them). caspar doesn't consider the implications, because in her mind v1 is the end of this - the war stops with it and she wants to be sure it has the body to do it (she really is the reason v1 can run on 1 hp at full capacity lol)
the three work incredibly well in sync and i think they have a lot of trust in one another for what they can do, but only balthazar and caspar live to see v1 "fully" completed - i really do like the idea that melchior donates their heart after their death (I GOT. whole ideas about video diaries they leave that are found by v2, very weird for it since it never got to meet them!!!!) those two finish the prototype at least, but i'm not sure on the timeline after this since v1's development is entirely halted due to the new peace. which is. a weird fucking thing for the two of them, an achievement of really what they both wanted but with their hard work benched pending v2's development and melchior's dream effectively dying not soon after them. they are both instrumental in advocating for its preservation, with both modifying it to hopefully make it through what may be a forever stasis by reinforcing its body and mind. v1 remembers them all only vaguely, usually if its memory is jogged by something it sees, though gabriel does try to assist in this since he believes it's important for v1 to recall its "family". hopefully i can get around to posting all of their designs soon as well as their updated husk looks!!

List the facts on why Frozen isn't great!!! I think it still counts as nostalgia!!!
Okay so I'm gonna preface this by saying I don't mind Frozen. I think it's a fine movie, and I really liked it when it came out. However, after every viewing of it I like the film a little less. Call it aging, call it obsession, call it high expectations, but I don't think it is great in any capacity for these reasons (please don't hate me for these):
For a movie that is meant to be about The Snow Queen, it wastes the original story. Elsa could've easily been the antagonist she was originally written to be while also being redeemed in the end. Keep everything to do with their parents, but give her anger; give her resentment. After years of holding on to keeping her powers hidden, and seeing the angry and scared faces of her citizens when she finally breaks, make her anrgy. Then there would be REAL stakes in Anna going up the mountain by herself to talk Elsa into unfreezing the city; make Anna slightly afraid of her and you've made it even more satisfactory when they reunite in the end.
Anna. Lord do I not like the way Anna was written. She's like if Rapunzel's personality was cranked up 100% and made boy crazy. If I'd written Anna, I'd have kept her sense of humor, but thrown away the adorkable bullshit. Make her funny, rough around the edges, desperate for affection, and slightly resent Elsa due to the perceived favoritism of their parents. These are two sisters who should dislike each other in the beginning while also missing what they once had.
Kristoff and Anna's relationship takes up too much time in the movie that could've gone to Elsa and/or her and Anna's relationship. If the message of the movie is that romantic love isn't the only kind of love we should seek, then why in the world is there a song, and almost marriage sequence, about Anna and Kristoff getting together after having known each other for only a day or two? I mean, Kristoff's only point in the movie is to help Anna up the mountain, and that's all he really does for the plot. (Besides introducing her to the trolls but honestly their whole point is to just say "ice in the head not great, but ice in the heart bad" so remove or rework them too)
I actually like Hans' role in the story, but he didn't have to be a twist villian. It could've been foreshadowed early on that he only wanted Anna for her potential power, and his betrayal would've been even more impactul because we would've seen as the movie went on how much Anna wanted to be loved.
Now this might just be me nitpicking, but the setting design is just sooo . . . I'll just say I've seen better castles and towns in Barbie movies. I mean, if you had the choice, would you rather go to Arendel's castle or the Beast's Castle? Plus the character design is also not great. We've all seen that post pointing out that Elsa, Anna, and their mother all look identical with their barely there noses and round heads.
My final point, bringing back my issue with wasting the source material, is that in the original story a girl goes on a quest to get her friend back from the ice queen, despite him having turned into an angry, bitter, and mean person. She believed he was still the person she loved under that magic, and she risked her life to get him back. That is not the story Frozen tells because Elsa is rarely shown to have those ugly emotions.

I want to hear your pure an unadulterated thoughts on Emperor Belos. Just want to hear your two cents on that guy
**crack my fingers** MY TIME HAS COME
I am going to say that first of all, Belos is a GREAT CLASSIC VILLAIN, he is irredeemable, he does HORRIBLE acts for SELFISH reasons and in general he is a bad person, but they also allow us to know his motives, his history and how he became what he is. now (although we never got to see it in its entirety IN THE SERIES thanks to the clipping--I DAMN YOU DISNEY).
I really like him as a character, his design as an emperor is GREAT (apart from the fact that the symbolism is good that he has pure light tones in his cape but in his underwear they are dark tones, like the character's intentions with the witches who appear to be good but they are much more vile than he lets on), his first appearance as an old cuchi is deceptively pleasant, and FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, I LOVE HIS MONSTER DESIGNS, THEY ALL REPRESENT VERY WELL THE CRAP THAT HE IS INSIDE. ESPECIALLY THE ONE AT THE END OF THE SECOND SEASON.
Although I definitely think that what I liked most about the character would be his historical accuracy and how that ends up being related to his origin story.
the story with his brother is sad- BY CALEB! Obviously, I'm not saying that he didn't screw up by not talking to Philip at the time or taking him with him, but probably Caleb (similar to him) was trapped in the Boiling Isles and didn't abandon him on purpose. We do not know if he had any intention of returning or how much he tried to do so, precisely because Philip did not care and was convinced that his brother (who loved him with all his soul and RAISED him) had abandoned him.
I like the theory that Philip tried to kill Evelyn first, because at that time it was very common to believe that women "tempted men and incited them to sin" and that if he killed her her brother would return to him, BUT OBVIOUSLY CALEB WOULD NOT LET HIM KILL HIS PREGNANT GIRLFRIEND.
AND YET BELOS HAS THE CHANCE TO BLAME HIM FOR HIS DEATH, SAYING THAT "HE WANTED TO SAVE HIS SOUL" (a very puritanical and timely thing to do, since of course the church did not kill bad people, noooooo, they were SINNERS who went against God, if they killed someone innocent they were giving them ✨the gift of eternal paradise✨ and other shit).
He is someone UNABLE to accept the blame for his actions, so he ends up blaming EVERYONE for what happened to him, the witches, the islands, his brother, everyone BUT HIM, the one who killed him and the reason why is in this shithole.....
However, he has a great ability to manipulate the situation to take control and benefit. Philip is a writer, it is much easier for him to see himself as the hero of the story instead of the vermin he is, thanks to this he can invent Belos.
He has such an exceptional capacity for manipulation that he Gaslighted all the Boiling Islands where he could talk to the titan (the equivalent of god in the series), to follow his system of covens by the "will of the titan" causing them to stop doing things. something that was IN HIS NATURE and on top of that they proclaimed him EMPEROR.
This man has the will to do HORRIBLE things in order to stay in power and remains powerful, he feeds on Palismanes, he mutilates his body to make magic, he has irreversibly damaged people with sigils/he has killed them, CLONO A HIS BROTHER AND KILLED HIM THOUSANDS OF TIMES.
HOLY SHIT- HUNTER MUST BE THE LONGEST GRIMWALKER EVER AND HE'S JUST A TEENAGER!!! AND IT IS SURELY BECAUSE BELOS LIED TO HIM ABOUT UNITY DAY. without counting his good share of EMOTIONAL MANIPULATION, PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL VIOLENCE and other things that this poor child had to face living with Belos.
and that he was the most similar to Caleb...
Also, the way he manipulated Luz, a 14-year-old girl, into believing that it was HER FAULT what she had done by "helping" him find the Collector? AHHHHHHGGGG I hate him SO MUCH BUT HE IS SO IN CHARACTER AND WELL BUILT HGGAAAAAAA----
In general, Belos is a TERRIBLE PERSON and human being in general, but an EXCELLENT villain who ended up as he deserved, being trampled and begging for salvation in a pathetic way :)
______

mvk, godot, dahlia CONTROVERSY TRIPLE
YAYYYYYYYYYY CONTROVERSY TRIPLE!!!!!!!
manfred:
Tumblr media
anyways its time for the culling of new followers. yes i am a manfred von karma stan hes insane and im obsessed with him and the popular fanon is 1) boring 2) stupid 3) uncanon 4) did i mention boring. for a more comprehensive take on my view of the von karma-edgeworth family soap opera i recommend taking a gander through my tag for it or alternatively just reading my aii2 retrospective. ANYWAYS with the disclosure statement out of the way . 1) his design slays what else is there to say. he was always serving. 2) the fanon SUCKS like im sorry but if what you got out of aa1 + investigations 1&2 was "manfred physically beat his kids on the regular and they hate him so much forever with 0 complicated feelings at all" um. maybe go back and re-consume the text. please. lets indulge ourselves in a bit of nuance. i would certainly not call manfred von karma father of the year (whatever was going on with turnabout goodbyes + me when i encourage my children in their fight with each other to determine who truly belongs in the family like a normal parent) but like. guys . just because he was a bad person doesnt mean he is now The Worst Guy in every single avenue ever. like. sigh . sorry we've looped back around to complaining about bad fanon. ANYWAYS no truly one of the most baffling characters in the franchise and i am desperately fascinated with whatevers going on inside his head . frankly every single one of his actions in regards to dl-6 on every front follow like no logical pathway i can discern and its truly something to behold. like whats wrong with you (rhetorical question - more interesting if we dont get an answer).
godot:
Tumblr media
half of me considered ticking "they've never done anything wrong in their life <33" despite the fact that i blatantly think its untrue and prefer it that way even simply to spite all the people who are annoying about him being mean to phoenix. ANYWAYSSSSSS S . 1) the design slays. obsessed with everything about him 2) they shouldnt bring him back but also they should bring him back. for me. ive convinced myself of the existence of the diego & lana & simon prison prosecutor trio and i need capcom to validate me they would be so . something together. mainly funny 3) to be honest there are some people i would attack through the screen over their terrible diego opinions. truly. like sorry but if you hate him i dont think we can be friends and some of you are truly beyond help. tbh i think half the reason they hate him so much is because 1) hes the Big Scary Brown Man whos soooooo mean to their poor uwu bean phoenix and 2) all of his important relationships are with women so they cant yaoi him off in a corner . ANYWAYS . hes everything to me i love his self-destructive mental illness swag which prompts him to lash out at the people around him and make terrible decisions which needlessly negatively impact like everybody he gets involved with in any capacity post coma. hes not stupid he just needs severe psychiatric help <3 i think he shouldve killed misty twice <- no hate against misty i also love her mental illness swag but i also support everything diego does unconditionally
dahlia:
Tumblr media
tldr: dahlia should get to kill and ruin whoevers lives she wants i support her unconditionally (no this does not conflict with my diego opinions. i can hold multitudes) un-tldr: to be honest her in-game writing kind of sucks (spectacular essay written on this here, which frankly puts it better than i ever could. thats the problem with this part im trying to think of opinions that arent covered in that but like it really hits all of them) but nonetheless as a notable fan of the Fey Family Period Drama how could i not love dahlia given that shes like one of the key pieces of evidence of the mass destruction that the current system in kurain causes to everybody it touches. "wahhh she was just Born Evil" not listening dont care. people also hate her for being mean to phoenix i think but i dont care about that either they just hate to see a girlboss winning. or losing tbh because thats like 80% of what dahlia did. but like still the spirit is there. also to be honest it kills me that we got like no elaboration on her relationship with iris because thats like actually SO interesting its so interesting but we get NOTHINGGGGGGGGG because the aa writers hate dahlia and they hate ME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! but anyways yeah if dahlia wants to maim and kill well then i support her #feminism #womensupportingwomen #terrymightnothavebeenamurderer #buthesurewasapedophile!

dunno where else to say it so. Kyo sonic au shit I’ve had rattling in my brain ;
- the eggman was created in a freak lab accident involving a chaos emerald; the radiation created a split personality in ivo robotnik, with the two struggling for control
- Metal sonic (prime) had a “good half” the ivo part installed- a conscience. Much like eggman, Metal sonic was plagued by contradicting directives… until, much like himself, eggman split metal in two
- sonic isn’t the Big Public Hero Number One. While he’s certainly heard of as the fastest thing alive (and Eggman’s archenemy), the freedom fighters get more recognition than him. Sonic doesn’t care but it drives eggman up the wall
- Angel island is still populated by echidnas, their Imperator being Ix. Knuckles fell from his home when he was young, and has been searching for a way back ever since
- the super special sonic search and smash squad is made up of Eggman’s three previous sonic robots; silver sonic, robo sonic, and led by mecha sonic. Though they have loyalties to eggman, they aren’t directly connected to the Eggnet like lesser badniks, only tuned into it like a radio station. It means they, most of the time, are off doing their own thing.
- sir Charles hedgehog takes in the good metal sonic after it flees from eggman, and helps repair him into shard. shard still has his combat functions, but would rather be part of rescue services like firefighters or extraction
- shadow is half-hedgehog, half-black arms. his power is unstable, and has to be held in check by his inhibitor belt. rouge is a former G.U.N. spy, and E-123 Omega is a violent cousin to robotnik’s E-Series robots. they answer to no authority, and help or harm whoever they want (though in the end, they’re ultimately a force of good)
- as I mentioned the e-series were built by robotnik (NOT eggman), and are instead learning robots meant to aid in research and sample gathering. Omega and Beta were both yoinked by eggman to create weapons, but only omega was able to escape his ultimate fate. Beta was robo-lobotomized. Gamma has learned to fight out of necessity, from Amy rose’ cousin Rob. He acts as a sniper instead of a front-liner.
- E-Merl is a lost echidna weapon that’s roamed the world for centuries. Despite being created with the capacity to destroy entire civilizations, E-Merl has a child-like personality and is easily roped into others’ schemes. The deception always ends in broken bones, however.
- G-Merl is an updated Gizoid designed by Shade. Like Gamma, he despises fighting- *unlike* gamma, he refuses to use any offensive weapons altogether. His most dangerous gadget is a taser.
- humans and anthro animals have been in contact for ages. The anthro animals (coined ‘mobians’) first called humans Overlanders, due to first contact being via crashing aircraft.
- the Black Arms are a roaming alien race, facing extinction. all they want is a home, but their way of life can be brutish and distressing. Shadow was created to be an envoy between the two worlds, but something happened to the Black Arms since then; they haven’t returned in 50 years. Shadow remains vigilant
- both shadow and Maria escaped the ark, but Maria’s disease caught up to her on earth. Shadow still holds his final promise to her. Due to being on earth for *much* longer than in canon, he’s come to understand both the good and evil in humanity. His greatest mission is to save the last living robotnik from his own alter ego.
- omega’s pissed all the time because eggman Fucked Up his reprogramming. Omega loves to make noise, be it from explosions or making actual music. He has more of a ‘bad boy’ persona than ‘DESTROY ALL EGGMAN ROBOTS’
- the chaotix are a much larger group, containing the duo of mighty and ray, alongside bomb and heavy. Knuckles is also an honorary member.
- if sonic could choose any adversary to keep personally, it’s the SSSSSS. mostly because they don’t really hate sonic, and their schemes and traps are always fun to evade.
- tails doesn’t know what pronouns are

🧍‍♀️
I feel like there’s... not much for me to say about Deuce? That doesnt mean I think he’s a flat character, I just don’t find that much about him interesting. As I mentioned in my Ace Character Opinion Bingo, I think Deuce has the most generic haircut (and honestly, maybe the most generic overall design) out of any character in TWST. His personality is also pretty standard--serious and straightforward--without many bells or whistles to help him make a name for himself in the large cast.
Admittedly, I do like how he’s willing to make an honest effort to better himself and to be respectful toward his seniors and superiors, but he lacks the intelligence that I look for in a character to really get my love. Deuce tends to operate on instinct and brawn, two principles that are the total opposite of what I enjoy. Ironically, it is in embracing these traits of his that allows Deuce to gain his unique magic, Bet the Limit. They’re integral parts of who he is, they are what makes him unique--so even if I find myself not particularly caring for those aspects of him, it’s clear that this was the type of character Deuce was intended to be, and he completely and unabashedly owns it. I’m proud of him for realizing and accepting that.
On the subject of fighting... Usually I’d cheer on a character when they finally snap and go wild on everyone else, but it feels somehow “wrong” for Deuce, since the entire point of him is that he doesn’t want to snap... so whenever he does lose it, it feels less cathartic and more like I feel bad that he temporarily slipped back into a violent version of himself. I’m NOT saying I don’t expect Deuce to make any slip-ups at all, but it just carries a different amount of significance when he does 💦 so it feels way less triumphant than it should. I also feel bad for him when he’s the target of Ace’s (often unwarranted) bullying and teasing. ACTUALLY, NOW THAT I’M THINKING ABOUT IT MORE, I JUST FEEL A LOT OF PITY FOR DEUCE IN GENERAL 😔
Deuce does have the capacity to be cute, but it’s not enough to make me want to adopt him as my son or anything. I think maybe the cutest thing he has done is be upset that some mob students shattered his eggs because he believed they killed the baby chicks still inside. It plays on his kindness and naivety, which is why it works well. Most other times, Deuce’s “cuteness” is the result of him being awkward, genuinely dumb, or just not aware of his surroundings or his situation, which I find to be much less charming.
I think I’d find more interest in Deuce if we got more content of him with his family, if I’m being totally honest. I wonder where his dad has gone and how Deuce feels about that abandonment (whether it be because of an early death, divorce, or because his father just up and left one day). I want more tender moments between him and his mom. What about his grandma? What’s Deuce’s relationship with her like? Give me something that doesn’t just make me pity Deuce more than I already do whenever he shows up on screen 😩

YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOU
Tumblr media
… Okay, time for me to finally come clean about all my thoughts on L*ona 😷 because there is a LOT for me to talk about (though I tried to keep it as concise as possible).
First thing’s first: I think episode 2 is bad--not just the worst in the main story so far, but the worst in terms of all TWST content (including events, vignettes, etc.). It’s clunky, it lacks cohesion, and a lot of it straight up doesn’t make sense in-universe. And because this is supposed to be LEONA’S chapter, it makes him, by extension, also look poorly written. Episode 2 does him NO favors whatsoever, and it is composed in such a way that it makes him come off as unintelligent when the story was trying to build him up as this great schemer. Sorry not sorry, but Azul and Jamil did it way better. I don’t think I can emphasize enough just how much episode 2′s narrative bothers me; it got under my skin to the point where I brainstormed an entire rewrite of it just to placate the little hamster running around in my head. There was so much wasted potential in episode 2, and I really hope that the manga and the light novel adaptations do what they can to smooth over the many issues it has.
With my obligatory “episode 2 is bad” vent out of the way, it’s time to actually get to the man himself: Leona.
MAN, WHERE DO I EVEN BEGIN WITH HIM????????????
I guess it would be easiest to start with his looks????? 😔 ... OKAY FINE FINE FINE WILL IT MAKE YOU HAPPY IF I CONFESS THAT I LIKE HOW HE LOOKS????? BECAUSE I DO OTL which is really strange, because Leona looks nothing like what I usually gravitate to; I almost NEVER go for the characters that look “wild” or have long hair. I don’t always think he dresses the best (his dorm uniform and camping gear are extremely ugly in my opinion), but regardless of what he’s actually wearing, he carries himself with such a swagger that he somehow ends up pulling it off anyway. I THINK I JUST LIKE. HIS FACE...................... LIKE HE JUST ALWAYS LOOKS SO FUCKING SMUG, IT MAKES ME WANT TO SMACK THAT SMIRK OFF OF HIM 😩 His green eyes are also very striking, they have almost a kind of magnetic draw that other characters with green eyes lack. And he’s. UH. HE’S BUILT A CERTAIN WAY AND HIS OUTFITS SOMETIMES EMPHASIZE IT (like the low cut top of his dorm uniform that shows off his arms and his pecs, or how he wears his dorm emblem on his waist like a belt in his school uniform). THIS ISN’T SIMPING, THIS IS ME COMMENTING ON HOW UNIQUE AND COOL HIS DESIGN IS, OKAY? OKAY. GOOD, MOVING ON.
SO.
EVERYTHING ELSE ABOUT HIM 🧍‍♀️That’s... a much tougher sell for me. Given his backstory, it’s no wonder why he is the way he is, but it doesn’t fully absolve him of any of his actions or his personality flaws. I don’t get why people don’t talk about how he literally tried to kill Ruggie more, or how many students he indirectly injured for the sake of his own ambitions, or why Leona isn’t frequently called out for generally being so selfish and entitled????? I completely stand with what Lilia said in episode 2: Leona acts slovenly and then blames others for his own issues rather than try to be proactive in bettering himself. With a heart as rotten as that, he doesn’t deserve to be “king”. “A collar suits [Leona] more than a crown”. Episode 2 Leona is truly a terrible person, and his defeatist “woe is me” attitude did not give me hope for him in the future installments of the main story.
... Aaaand here’s the part where I admit that I was wrong 😂 Leona is a lot (and I do mean a LOT) better outside of episode 2; it’s only that episode alone that totally sours him, he’s leagues more interesting and complex when he’s not... episode 2-ing. You can really see his full potential in glimpses here and there, but it always stops short of going all the way because Leona very obviously still has doubts about his whether or not his efforts will be recognized--if he will be recognized. He’s still sorting through some very complicated and angsty emotions, and that really comes through in his dialogue and interactions with other characters... but there’s still some good in him shining through, there are moments when his wits and natural leadership abilities come out, and those are the times when he is at his best.
Whenever Leona is being petty or sassy to someone else, it is funny, but there’s a deeper meaning to it. He’s lashing out at the people whom he believes has what he lacks or the people who tell him how he should act (something that Falena is implied to do quite often). Whenever Leona’s helping others out, there’s usually an ulterior motive to it (he helps destroy Azul’s contracts because he had made a deal with Azul prior and wanted to be free from it, he tells his juniors an optimal way to mine for magical stones so they get the work done faster and he can nap instead of helping, etc.). He knows how to think outside of the box and how to manipulate people and situations to get what he wants... like they’re the chess pieces, and he’s the one moving them. It shows just how dangerous he can be, but also just how much good he can do depending on how he uses his strengths. DO YOU REALIZE HOW POWERFUL HE COULD BE????????? WITH THOSE BIG BRAIN FOLDS???????????????????? IF ONLY HE JUST CONSISTENTLY APPLIED HIMSELF LIKE THIS????????????? INSTEAD OF JUST SELF-SABOTAGING OVER AND OVER.....................
Something that I’ve found really interesting about Leona is that he has a surprising number of juniors that look up to him even though he doesn’t like playing with “kids”. There’s Jack, Epel, Cheka, and I’m betting tons of Savanaclaw kids. They’ve yet to turn completely jaded, so they are able to see Leona’s positives more clearly. He’s someone with a lot of knowledge and wisdom, and he’s perfectly poised to lead as a dorm leader and captain of the Magift/Spelldrive team. I enjoy hearing about how he actually gives useful feedback to help his players improve, or how he wants to secure stable futures for his dorm members (albeit with the caveat of tending to his own agenda on the side, but still). He may not like kids, but this makes me think that maybe a very very VERY tiny part of Leona wants to help nurture others so they don’t turn out as bitter and as resentful as he has. MAYBE THAT’S JUST WISHFUL THINKING ON MY PART 😩 but I don’t know, I see a little potential in that line of thinking after his conversation with Jamil in episode 6. Leona realizes that he and Jamil are similar, but he has more faith in Jamil being able to change for the better than he has in himself. Leona may not always communicate it (or he’ll dance around the issue or say it in a gruff way), but he has lost hope--and honestly, that’s much sadder than any of the vitriol that other people can throw at him. Once that hopelessness is internalized, it’s hard to run away from yourself. The true tragedy of Leona isn’t that he will never be king, it’s that Leona doesn’t believe in himself, and thus has set himself up for a self-fulfilling prophecy and a vicious cycle of self doubt and self loathing.
On a more light-hearted note, I think that I’ve come to appreciate Leona’s quirks with time. His sarcasm can be biting when it has to be, and at other times it can be funny (like when he claims he’s a ‘delicate prince’ or that he’s just some ‘lost child’ wandering the STYX facilities). He can also be princely when he has to be too bad he never wants to be, thanks to his royal upbringing. No matter what persona he dons, his charisma and arrogance is still present, and he knows how to use it to suit his needs (adbhlsbasihbdiasllbids THAT TIME WHEN HE DISTRACTED SOME FAIRIES BY DEMANDING WATER AND THEIR EYE CONTACT). This makes for some interesting dynamics between Leona and other characters; he’s very aware of others and their motives, but he doesn’t really intervene unless it suits him (pointing out that Jamil has “eyes that always glare”, realizing the trick behind Azul’s contracts, knowing that Ruggie’s loyalty can be bought with bribes and food, etc.). He can be petty and uncooperative, and he can also be very wise and insightful. Leona is a LOT of things, not just that mopey, angry second-born prince, and it has been a wild ride watching him develop from that into something greater. Imagine what Leona could be like if he could live up to his full potential, if he was able to overcome his doubts and utilize his intelligence to its full extent 😳
I think where the fandom tends to go wrong with Leona is thinking that his struggle is very literal. I understand why people would think this way, especially with the frequency at which Leona laments not being first born/not being king, but I believe it’s a lot more nuanced than that. What was it that frustrated Leona so much? That no matter how hard he tried to prove himself, he would never be noticed. His skills, his intelligence--none of it would ever be recognized, because people had already judged him before really getting to know him beyond the surface level and constantly compared him to others. Look at his frightening power, look at his brooding personality. He’s nothing like Falena. What Leona desires isn’t the crown, but to be seen and to be appreciated and to be respected for what he is. Giving him a kingdom or having him marry into some other family won’t necessarily satiate that. Just telling Leona “it’s okay, I love you and accept you for who you are” won’t help either; Falena and Cheka are shown to offer Leona a lot of love and unconditional support, but all it does is make Leona bristle and get more irritated. Thinking that a concrete solution or simple words can solve his problems trivializes the extent of his childhood trauma; I’m afraid that it runs far deeper than any of us can hope to understand.
Leona’s just so. So...................................................... intricate.
I still feel like I’ve only scratched the surface 🤡 but I hope that I’ve sufficiently conveyed a little bit of what goes on in my head when that hamster hops on its wheel and starts sprinting like its a marathon...

Fic Rec: pride is not the word I'm looking for by Tossawary
If it matters, the canon for this fic is The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System. You do not need to know this canon to enjoy this story. I know NOTHING of this canon beyond that it is about a transmigrator and I LOVED this story.
This is a very long story by a very considerate author who includes content warnings and optional spoilers via links to their tumblr. The spoilers are barebones and do not ruin any enjoyment.
Do you enjoy the following?
Women removed from the fridge
People being strong in different ways (Luo Jiahui's strength is her deep capacity for love and her willingness to stand by those she loves, even if it means going up against people others fear. I love her).
Character growth! (I hated the main character in the first few chapters. He is utterly spineless and cares little about the world beyond his own survival. But then, by building one single relationship, he starts to grow because he starts to care.)
A story centered on a found family sibling relationship. (Shang Qinghua and Luo Jiahui are the best siblings. They choose each other over and over again. Both have their own (slowburn) romances.
A well-plotted AU in which every deviation can be traced by to the transmigrator or the implications of the canon. (Even Luo Jiahui's age is eventually explained).
Relationships of various types that evolve, change, and grow.
Resolutions that happen when people communicate and trust each other. Conflicts when they don't.
Multiple interesting side characters. Even the most minor of characters have at least a quirk that makes them distinct from other people.
Plot holes get resolved! Stuff comes back! Things that seem unimportant early on return later as new threats or have new weight!
Transmigration stories
A world based on a shitty novel and forced to work when it wasn't designed to; aka very interesting worldbuilding
Then you need to read @tossawary's pride is not the word I'm looking for!!
Okay, an actual summary, though.
So, from what I understand, SVSS is a transmigration story in which a young man takes over the role of a major villain in the protagonist's youth. In the original novel, the protagonist became a demon emperor and had, like, 600 wives. In the new canon caused by transmigration, the protagonist falls for the villain. But lots of bad stuff still happens.
In this story, the author of the original harem novel gets transmigrated into a side character who works alongside the original villain. The author starts from birth in this world and is forced by the System (an unexplained entity that issues quests via pop-up screens and manages the world state) to assume the role and position of his character (he can't check out of the plot). The author assumes he can't really change canon and is only interested in his own survival.
However, he just has to go see his protagonist, Luo Binghe, as a baby. So he arranges vacation and goes. When he finds him, he realizes Luo Binghe's adoptive mother (a character he never even named, but is Luo Jiahui) is 19, living in a hovel, and selling her body to make ends meet. His long-dead conscience rises up and he decides he can't leave her like that, not when he's the one responsible for her misery.
He originally plans to just drop her off somewhere, let her pretend to be his sister-in-law, give her lots of money, and never interfere again.
But that doesn't really go according to plan at all. And from this one change, the world shifts for the better.
The two grow into a family. Luo Binghe goes from being his "protagonist son" to being his nephew. Shang Qinghua goes from seeing the world as only his creation to being his home and the people in it as real and vital as himself. Friendships, family, good deeds (even absentminded ones), and love triumph over everything.
This is such a good story. I just finished it and I want to go and start reading it again from the beginning--especially since I nearly put it down. Shang Qinghua is so very annoying at first.
Seriously. Go read it. You do not need any canon knowledge. The story itself and the fantastic author notes keep everything clear.

Drop the $50 fountain pen stationary sites 🥺
my favourite places to snoop around are cultpens [best ink selection in the UK imo], jetpens, andy's pens [mix of old stock and vintage stuff], the writing desk and thepencompany. gouletpens has a youtube channel that i keep abreast of but i don't like buying from them because they're obsessed with noodler's who i fucking hate. fountain pen network is a great resource but website seems to be down right now. i'm gonna use this as an excuse to waffle now bc i love pens thank you.
at the moment i'm most interested in the TWSBI iris colourways (rainbow anodised metal !!!) [piston fill / vac fill] also their rose gold and jade green eco-t. i like the look and feel of brass pens, there's a few available but the traveler's company one seems to have best reviews atm. kaweco's is a very nice design though. have heard good things about opus88 and i have my eye on the halo. conklin duragraph is a lot less fun looking than most pens i'm into but they are really nice to write with and last forever.
this one [sailor hi-ace neo] is actually very cheap but are apparently the best starter calligraphy pens available right now. ferris wheel press have this gorgeous pen i'm very curious about but i've never tried any of their ink.
my favourite that i own so far is moonman c1. completely impractical for carrying around with me but i insist on doing it anyway. i really like lamy nibs but all the ones i like the look of have irritatingly tiny ink capacity. most of the time i'm just using a set of beat up old wing sun 3008s because you can get 4 for less than 20£ on amazon and as long as you take care of the nibs they're very hardwearing. it's basically the store brand version of a TWSBI diamond so i would recommend those over the 3008 if you can afford it.
some of my favourite inks: l'artisan pastellier [callifolio equinoxe 6 / classic vert lumiere] robert oster [signature blue denim] pilot [iroshizuku yama-budo / tsutstuji / tsukushi] diamine [soft mint / earl grey / writer's blood / monboddo's hat / peach haze] herbin [bleu calanque]
i also desperately still want this colorverse special edition set the colours are soooooo nice [new horizons]. for years you couldn't buy colorverse anywhere in the uk so now that it's available here it's taking immense self-control to not go absolutely batshit.
and honorable mention to this bad boy because she's 140$ but i want her so bad: YSTUDIO classic revolve

Okay, so now what I've slept and the episode is up on YouTube, I'm gonna dump all my thoughts on For The Future out in a single (very long) post like I did for Thanks To Them.
Of course, that means heavy spoilers, so do not click keep reading unless you've seen the episode (or if you don't care about spoilers for the ep, which makes me wonder how you even got to this post).
Okay so. Oh my titan. Where do I start? Beginning's probably the best choice.
I had a hunch they'd do the 'End of King's Tide from the other perspective' thing, but I can't say any of that quite went how I was expecting. I kinda thought—and I think a lot of other people did too—that King was gonna be fully separated from the rest of group on the BI from the moment the Collector was let out. Lilith and Eda both attempting to confront the Collector and save King immediately was not at all what I really expected.
I'm a little curious as to how the three of them made it to the point that they did after the intro, though. I get that Lilith made new elixir for Eda's curse, but then how did Lilith get un-puppetified ahead of that? I might've missed a detail somewhere, but as far as I can remember that wasn't really elaborated on. Maybe King asked the Collector to un-puppet her?
I do love the new designs for Eda and Lilith though. Lilith's hair being back to her natural color does make it really feel like it's been a long time (plus it makes her color palette look a bit more like the aroace flag hehehe). I also like that Eda's arm hasn't been replaced by anything, just bandaged. I feel like I saw a lot of people's design-guesses for her had given her a new arm in some capacity, and I always kinda felt like it was more in-character for Eda to not really see it as something that needs a replacement.
Tumblr media
At least they still seem to be a bit happy.
But, moving on from that, I'm absolutely going absolutely insane over the fact that the Hexsquad and Eda/Lilith/King still haven't actually gotten to reunite. Like, the Hexsquad saw King, but other than that, nobody's really aware of how the other group is doing at this point. It hurts so bad.
But speaking of the Hexsquad, there's a lot to unpack with them. I'm kind of amazed how many personal arcs are still getting fit into the show with so few epsiodes.
Willow's arc especially kind of surprised me, though it's a welcome one for sure! It was—for better or worse for myself—a very relatable thing to see portrayed how it was. And the way it tied into Hunter's whole deal as well was so artfully done.
Tumblr media
Like, damn, this hurts.
Immediately following up the Hunter-saves-Willow scene of that arc with Luz's "The only thing I've ever really wanted was to be understood" felt like it was equally calling me out. Like damn, all these characters are so relatable it hurts.
The way Camila and Luz's arcs in this episode informed one another was super elegant. Their daughter relationship is so wholesome.
Amity getting her chance to finally confront Boscha fully was another thing I really wasn't expecting to still make it into the season with it cut down so much. In fact, I can't say I was expecting Boscha to get a chance for any sort of active role. I really need to stop underestimate how well Dana and her team are managing to work with the small number episodes, they clearly know what they're doing.
Which, as it stands, I guess the only member of the Hexsquad who hasn't had a significant season 3 arc is Gus (outside of his role in Hunter and Willow's arcs), but he went through so much in season 2 that I kinda hope he doesn't have to go through anything more.
However, a character I DO hope has to go through more BS is Belos. I'm still kinda reeling from the fact that he apparently already had a new grimwalker on the way, and then tried to POSSESS it. I'm a bit relieved that it didn't work, because I don't think I could've handled it (nor could Hunter, frankly), but Raine being the second option isn't great either.
Moving past main characters;
Getting actual characterization of The Collector has been very interesting, mainly because it seems like everyone seemed to get it pretty right that they're an Enzo Gabriel. I really do wonder how aware they are of the harm they're doing, because it seems to be getting kept a bit vague on the actual truth of that. They seem pretty largely oblivious to the fact that it's anything other than a game, but the edit to the 'bedtime story' seems to imply that they at least know some amount of it.
Tumblr media
What affairs? "Seal them up so they never fade"??
Mom-dalia??? How in the name of the titan did she manage to pull off getting to be The Collector's mom-figure instead of getting puppeted immediately. It kind of implies that she somehow hasn't managed to actively do a single thing that annoyed the Collector this whole time, which I'm amazed by. Though, to be fair, Terra apparently hadn't done so either, so the bar might not be that high.
Caleb and the past grimwalkers have me a little confused. Are they ghosts? Guilt-formed hallucinations? Something else? Is there a link between grimwalkers and their creators that means Belos has been getting haunted by all of them this whole time? Regardless, seeing a bunch of the past grimwalkers was not something I expected either.
Tumblr media
This shot is haunting as hell.
Mattholomule's name actually being Mat Tholomule does feel like it makes sense in retrospect, but it's also very cursed.
Edric and Emira's reunion with Amity was the first part of the episode that got me to start crying (though it was far from the last.)
Moving past characters...
The scene that revealed String Bean was kind of funny to me because "A dragon? A bird?! Oh, an otter! A spooky bat? Uh, a snake?" is almost definitely a direct callout of the fandom's guesses as time went on. Though, all of the respective guesses are also very in-character for each person (Hunter's "A bird?!" does hurt my heart a little).
The design of The Collector's House/The Archives is a little interesting to me because the way it's floating over The Titan's head makes it look like a halo. Or a crown? I feel like there's some symbolism I'm missing.
New Hexside was a very fun concept in general. I feel like the idea of "a town/society that's entirely composed of schoolchildren" was very accurately portrayed.
I dunno if the scene right at the end was meant to be the 100% canon confession or just lead-up to something in the next episode but I sobbed either way!!!!!

*chanting* Huntlow! Huntlow! Huntlow!
I think I've finally run out of things to say (though that might change).

Here's a rough sketch idea of how I envision the character art. I've never done character design before, so I'm not exactly sure what I'm doing. Actually I've never done any of this before so it's my first time if you can leave me any advice in the comments I would appreciate it!! I'll come back and edit or add to this post as I flesh out the game idea more.
Her magical wardobe
I want my protagonist to be a magical girl so I gave her a dress. I embellished the garment with basic magical symbols to represent items she can pick up. I've never done clothing design so I tried to keep it basice. She has a light color scheme and her hair is brown because I still want to keep her rooted to reality but when the game is built I'd like to add customization options so she'll be able to have her hair changed.
Core game fighting style
The player can select between 2 fighting styles.
The first style is the staff equipped which she uses to spread an AOE multi enemy type attack. It's fantastical and opens her up to abilities. Her attacks are a little weaker but it looks cool and she deals damage to multiple enemies at a time.
The second style is fist Mano e Mano- she throws her staff into the ground behind her and lifts her fists, a little animation should emphasize magic around her fists so she can attack 1v1 she hits way harder but she's a bit slower and can't fight off too many at once.
When she switches between attack styles there should be a 1 second delay but it should feel cool and switching styles should help with strategy while fighting different waves or bosses. Also maybe staying on one style should be rewarded or punished depending on whatever is more fun ill have to think about it.
Fighting enemies and gathering condensed magic crystals
The enemy squud here would be one of many, I didn't really think about enemy design the Lil squid here is just a placement holder. I would rather have enemies that represent some abstract representation of magical energy or creatures that look they could be made of magic. Anyway enemies drop condensed magic and coins.
Coins are used to purchase clothes or weapons
Magic is used to power up or increase mana/magic capacity. I think some types of condensed magic could also be used as prestige points.
The art style
I don't want to spend hours drawing each character so I'm working with a simple chibi style sketch large outline for each object that the player can interact with. I want it to be less colorful and more pastel like nothing too hard on the eyes.
During serious bits or hard-core parts I want to flesh out a more illustrated or realistic sketchy anime style.
Core gameplay loop
So you switch between fighting styles while fighting waves of monsters or bosses as your character fights they improve in either skills being able to take on tougher challenges depending on how they've built their character while idling- at some point they are defeated or die but they're reborn or remade via the crystal bits they be collected idk and start out at lvl 1 they can spend collected coins or crystals to buy or equip different clothes or armors or weapons to fit their playstyle.
The plot
Uh I'm not sure. I think whatever is going on she's like getting revenge for a loved one who was killed and basically she has to kill her way through a vast amount of enemies before she reaches the big bad the irony is she herself is killed a billion times and everytime she resets she loses a little more of herself but tbh idk I'm not a writer ill have to think about it longer. Maybe the crystals take her over. Oh maybe the more crystals you use to Power up distorts your character over time and so you can choose an active playstyle where you get stronger faster but your character looks more evil or a more idle passive approach where you gather strength but naturally idk.
Those are the basics I have rn, I don't want to spend weeks working on art or plots i just want to build

Troll WIPs
Mostly for myself so I don’t forget all the ideas I’ve been gathering and working on, because I’m an easily excitable dude who’s also very easy to distract and awfully tired and forgetful... so you might see how that might affect what the hell im doing on this blog...
However, if you were ever interested in shippin with me in any kind of capacity and find my current roster lacking, ya can of course check out what I have on the backburner.
This is going to be a very long post, because I'll probably add some visuals here and there and because yeah... I have a lot of ideas, so it's going into a readmore!
Basically done!
Elyzia - just gotta finish those talksprites! <3
Xiento Ethuri - needs some talksprites <3
Romida Gartho - could probably use a talksprite
Stryxe Sangui - talksprite? :3c
Well underway, solid ideas
Tumblr media
Vizlei Alvear - Male - He/Him + A very friendly fella, maybe not the smartest though? + Student studying to become a veterinary! Loves animals! Childhood friends with Elraik, friends with Ghalen + Study buddies with Salhus and Ialvah :D
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Elraik Maarvi (Left) Transfem Nonbinary - They/Them + Design by @8bit-mau5 + A Business and Fashion Student who has commitment issues, but enjoys being desired by others, is childhood friends with Vizlei and enjoys doing pole dancing as a hobby, a bit sassy this one
Ghalen Centin (Right) Male - He/Him + Design by @8bit-mau5 + A chronically tired fella that's kinda friends with Elraik and Vizlei, also a Student, a bit of a mutant, tends to be chill most of the time, likes snacks... feed him snacks please...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3 literal troll children who are kinda some feel good characters for me, who have nothing bad happen to them besides regular ass lil kid troubles (literally all 3 of them are mutants in some ways) + Revenn Spirav (Left) - 1 hemoanon baby duck nonbinary knight that likes to go on adventures and be the protector of their friends! adopted Striga as their parent + Veltin Airlin (Right) - 1 shy violet prince boy, "giant seabunny" parent, very timid and a lil clingy, wants to be a good boy, Design by @goddesstrolls + Anthea Cornis - 1 pink super sparkly unicorn princess who wants to be the bestest empress when she grows up! Is surprisingly level headed for her age... will still put makeup on you and try to pretty you up with sparkly clothing though
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kazmir Lycant (Left) Male - He/Him + An indigo werewolf shifter, that's kind of chaotic evil, that's a pretty rough design idea, used to be a really nice guy until he got fucked over so much that he just went apeshit at some point, though he's mellowed out some since + Used to hate Hespar, because the guy almost got him killed when they were both younger, but at this point he's kind of gotten attached to the old fool and they might manage to bond with one another yet...
Hespar Laetum (Right) Male - He/Him + Old man Monster Hunter Cowboy Wizard! He's a design trade I got from @goddesstrolls + He hunts the undead and other creatures that are dangerous to most regular trolls - he started hunting Kazmir many years ago when the guy started to go apeshit and almost killed him, but got away + Kazmir has since become Hespar's white whale of sorts, always trying to find him and take him down, though he's starting to get old enough where even his magic can't help offset his waning strength and skills anymore
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anudal Nubihs (Left) Neutral - He/Him + A Businessman, if you will... Not quite a troll this one, is he? + What business? You're not sure, though if you'd ask him he'd probably say he was in the business of death, which is why the Alternian Empire is so lucrative + He's far above most petty, mortal things, but he indulges occasionally to alleviate potential boredom
Orvear Retrix (Right) Male - He/Him + Rainbowdrinker artist, chaotic evil, a wee lil bit insane! A design trade I got from @goldenguillotines + Orvear is... a lil fucked up in the head, he's obsessed with beauty (or at the very least what he himself defines as beauty), he's always looking for models for his paintings and sculptures and might become obsessive with what he thinks is a beautiful troll + he will seduce trolls he thinks are attractive enough for his taste, get them to pail with him and then drink their blood, because that's how feeding works best for him
Crovin Thonyz - Male - He/Him + a drunk ass teal who can't get his shit together ever since his matesprit died quite a few sweeps ago, he loved him too much and can't seem to move past it
Temero Rargym - Male - He/Him + a lime chemist that hates the world and hates being alive but would never let you kill him because that would be doing you a favor after all + he finances himself by selling designer drugs - as in specifically designed for your wants/needs, he's ridiculously good at it
Rough ideas, working on it
Balton - Pokemon Based silly boy for Sylvie <3
A specialized team for Athokk, he needs some coworkers other than Aitreo
Masc Enby Guitar Player in a band with Etatio
A Sexy GNC dude, singer in a band with Etatio
Gonna have to figure out a drummer for that band too
Tumblr media
Amalia Ashado - Genderfluid - She/Xe + Design by @8bit-mau5 + Originally wanted to put her into the Venturia gang, but I changed my mind in the meantime + Wanna put xem on Alternia with some of the others, a noble lady
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mlanee (Left), a GNC boy - He/They + a popstar with creepy cute vibes, may or may not be evil/insane, rough design idea
Myelee (Right) - She/They + a feel good dancer, making choreographies and videos for youtube, but also has their own studio where they teach, rough design idea
Adopts I love but really need to figure out
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Purple (Left) + Design by @cherrytrolls (wanna edit the look a lil) + potentially ditzy, airheaded idol, cute and well meaning?
Indigo (Right) + Design by @cherrytrolls (wanna edit the look a lil) + maybe a pit fighter, kinda tough gal?
Tumblr media
Lil Miss Bloodthorne (Left) + Design by @clown-fuckers-r-us (wanna edit the look a lil) + seriously gotta think about this one, probably a demon of sorts
Pastel Goth (TBA) + adopt by (TBA) highblood, probably a former friend of Etatio's
The Venturia Gang
It's an entirely different planet (Venturia) where technology doesn't really work the same way it does in the rest of the Empire. + Imagine it a bit like DnD themed, leaning more on the fantasy than the sci-fi side. It's got kingdoms and various forms of ruling castes, mutations, flora, fauna, gods etc. + Trolls originally came to the planet to colonize it, but found they couldn't leave anymore. If ya land on the planet, yer stranded there for the rest of your life and find that pretty much all your tech is useless. + Ya gotta adapt, bro! Become one with the fantasy setting! + I gotta figure out more about this quite literal homebrew im doing
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ithora Khaave (Left) Nonbinary - They/Them + Ranger Design by @8bit-mau5 + generally unfriendly, kinda dislikes other trolls, adventurer
Namkor Argean (Right) Genderqueer - He/They + Bard Design by @8bit-mau5 + gay ass disaster
Tumblr media
Lyonel - Male - He/Him + Himbo Supreme Barbarian, rough design ideas - Lion hearted, stupid but friendly, courageous or maybe too stupid to be scared + heart full of love and ass full of dumb
A sexy sexy rogue bastard <3 abs out whore dude + only really have some visual ideas so far
I kinda want more DnD/fantasy trolls
