#Mori is the definition of morally grey

ok people we gotta stop making mori the source of all evil with soukoku. Yes mori is evil about how he treated yosano and a lot of the pm members but that's a whole other can of worms.
Anyways with skk MORI WOULD NOT TRY TO GET IN THEIR WAY IN FACT HE WOULD ENCOURAGE THEIR ASSES TO GET TOGETHER THIS PANEL EXISTS FOR A REASON.
Tumblr media
MORI SHIPS THEM SO BAD ITS ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS.
Fics need to stop making this dude try to prevent skk from dating. I want a crack fic where mori is just like "Hey how was ur day do u like to kiss guys?" To both dazai and chuuya. I want mori shenanigans where he's actively trying so hard to set them up and Elise is sitting in a corner with kouyou and they're hard core judging him.

@ticklinglady : thank you very much for replying to my ask, it was more than satisfying! 🥰 I must admit, that I might not have been as attentive as I should have, when reading your tags, and that resulted in me sending this message to you 😅 But in any case, it was very interesting to hear your thoughts! I understand how you would go crazy over Tachihara forgiving the guy for the sake of the Black Lizards, it's just a LOT to take in affhghghg. Personally, I just want Mori to have some real consequences for his actions in the manga soon and it doesn't matter how it goes. So far the only truly important consequences that he ever had to deal with had happened prior to the main story and I think that's a bit boring. It's kind of like the situation with Dazai where everyone starts having a blast, when he can't foresee something. Personally, even if Tachihara is going to stay in the mafia, I want it to be primarily for the Black Lizards and for him to become more wary of Mori and his methods overall, but your idea is also good~ I think it depends more on the matter of storytelling bias 🤭
Absolutely! Thank you so much for your ask (I love a good excuse to ramble about things I have not thought about a lot. This fandom keeps the brain sharp. For BSD, at least XD), and sorry it took so long to reply
And not to worry! Tags are always just additional thoughts that aren't usually relevant. Just apologies and clarification, mostly.
Also, I absolutely think Mori should get consequences. If Fukuzawa actually does dies, so should Mori. For the balance....(and if our Fukuzawa doesn't die, then Mori should anyway. For the plot :))) It would also be really funny if Hirotsu, Gin, and Tachihara all decided to collectively go work for the government (not really, I wouldn't want that for them...but it just makes me laugh when I think of Fukuchi in prison telling Aku that he got his sister)
But yeah, again. Thank you for the ask! It's always lovely to hear from you guys! :DDD

Sorry if I ended up spamming your notifs but I looked through your dashboard cuz of that Fukuzawa post- how he could feel the bond snapping if the people he consider his subordinates died, and... never in my life have I considered that bond could've applied to Fukuchi when the guy left---
(But then it crossed my mind as I write this that idk if it's fortunate or devastating for Fukuzawa if something life-threatening happened to Ranpo because Ranpo doesn't have an ability that bonded with All Men Are Equal.)
Anyways, I love your post about Atsushi being in the mafia as part of the exchange cuz I love seeing Mori suffer.
I always define Atsushi as "light in the darkness" because in Beast, that's how he was for Kyouka (he'll always be her light).
Sorry for rambling, I should've sent you this as a message but idk if you'd feel comfy about some random acc popping in your inbox.
First off, ramble away.
I love having discussions and stuff about the stuff I talk about.
You're good, I don't mind. If you or someone else was spamming my inbox, I'd let ya know.
I do generally prefer people message me thro the asks, especially if I don't know you.
That aside and onto ur message.
I just can't get over that line of Fukuzawa saying he'd know if Kunikida had died.
That in some way he would've felt it. And I see it as a connection, as an almost physical bond between them that would've been cut.
And the idea of his connection with Fukuchi breaking. What was possibly one of the oldest connections Fukuzawa had, dissolving over time.
Fukuzawa trying to hold onto it because he still sees him as his friend. But it's broken and there's nothing he can do to get it back.
And it being so sad because Fukuzawa is used to these bonds breaking at death, but Fukuchi was lost to him long before he died.
I didn't think about Ranpo.
I think Fukuzawa sees it as both a blessing and a curse that he can't feel if Ranpo is okay.
But it's a testament to their bond that it isn't required. They trust each other so much, that it's like a sixth sense for Fukuzawa to know what Ranpo's up too.
While also knowing that if he wasn't grey before he met Ranpo, he would've definitely gone grey after meeting him.
Agreed.
Atsushi is the beast beneath the moonlight. He is the literal light in the darkness.
The idea of Kyouka envisioning the light with Atsushi as a apart of that, is gonna make me cry I love them both.
Atsushi in the Port Mafia to me is Mori being like I'm gonna corrupt you and Atsushi's like power of friendship motherfucker.
Atsushi won't go to therapy but you bet your ass he's giving everyone in the Port Mafia therapy.
Atsushi met Mori as werid ex doctor who gave him good but advice once. I think he'd be a bit... Skeptical this man is the head of the Port Mafia.
I think he'd listen to him but would think through and use that advice while following his own morals.
Like he did before.
Which is infuriating and fascinating to Mori because clearly Atsushi gets where he's coming from... He just won't do it.
Quite a juxtaposition from everyone else in the Port Mafia follows Mori without question.
But Atsushi does not.
I love the idea of his interactions with Mori are him being mostly maliciously compliant.
Like he's not outright doing something wrong but he's still pissing him off.
Something Dazai and Kunikida would've definitely taught him.
Like Mori's going on a whole spiel and Atsushi is just colouring on the floor with Elise paying him no attention.
And Mori can't say anything because Elise is so happy so he's just silently seething.
That whole Anne's Room episode and seeing these two interact for the first time, with Atsushi not knowing Mori's identity
Is just so intresting to me. More interactions between them is something I want.
That and I'd be curious to see if there was any information to do with the Port Mafia getting the bounty for Atsushi from the Guild and Fyodor.
Because yeah it could've just been for the reward, but was there more to it than that?
Or if the Headmaster had connections to the Port Mafia.
Because however small it may be, the Headmaster still made contact with the Port Mafia to sell a gun.
He's not from the area, but somehow arranged a meeting with them.
And in my opinion died very suspiciously.
I mean I personally hc that the injections the Headmaster was giving Atsushi were obtained from Mori when he was an underground doctor.
Whether that's true or not, idk but it would be intresting if Mori knew more about Atsushi than we realise.
But yeah that's just some of my thoughts.

hella should I watch bsd and why?
YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES E OMG YES okay okay here's why you should watch bsd right now this moment and tell me all about it:
chuuya nakahara is a man that exists. he is everything to me
the characters are all based on famous authors and they all dress like they're fucking victorian or some shit and they all fight each other and have homoerotic partnerships. the aesthetic of bsd is just unmatchable truly
genuinely the most homoerotic anime ive ever watched and ive watched haikyuu
chuuya is there!
on a serious note the plot absolutely WOWS it's soooo clever it's about detectives and mafia and external threats etc etc but there's twists and the characters are sooooo smart and especially with recent manga events you NEVER know what's going to happen im always on the edge of my seat
it has powers!!!!!!!!! they're called 'abilities' and our main cast all have one and they're so so interesting bc they're inspired by the writer that the character is named after (aka fyodor's ability is 'crime and punishment')
there's a guy with a literal GOD inside of him and he can control gravity and he wears funny hats and has the most gorgeous hair of all time also his name is chuuya
dazai osamu (yes like THEE dazai osamu) is there and he's a BITCH while also being one of the most insanely intelligent characters of any media ever. he makes me want to die (affectionate)
found family!!!!! particularly from our protag atsushi bc he's an orphan that effectively gets adopted by our main cast and he has a real thing about Belonging and Family and Healing From Abuse so watching that all unfold is just <33333
the generational trauma omg i know for a FACT you of all people will like this. we have a cycle of abuse that is just so so fascinating bc you sympathise with ALL OF THEM (aside mori. he can rot) even when they themselves become the next generation of abuser and it's so complicated and ive never actually seen it illustrated so explicitely before
also speaking of generational things we also have each new generation of double black from zenki soukoku to soukoku to shin soukoku i think it's soooo compelling (basically the most powerful duo of each generation but every single time they absolutely HATE each other and are forced to figure it out and wind up knowing each other better than anyone while still sustaining a farce of mutual dislike aka everyone knows they're fucking)
this one guy throws a building at a dragon. i cant remember his name right now but it's definitely nothing that rhymes with mooya makahara
YOSANO!!!!!!!! HOT ANGRY MURDER LESBIAN!!!!!!!!!!
murder siblings via the akutagawas!!!! they are everything to me!!!! we also have the tanizaki siblings but i need you to ignore every second they're on screen together and id like to apologise in advance
bsd set the standard for enemies to lovers. full stop argue with the wall
constant literary references throughout that make my heart happy
it's easily accessible! the entire show is free on crunchyroll in multiple languages including an english dub!
A5158
we have angst! we have humour! we have plot! we have bsd wan for when bsd gets too much! we have a movie! we have an updating manga that's still got plenty of steam! we have three seasons as is! we have a stage play! we have found family! we have corrupt organisations! we have healing! we have morally grey characters actively choosing good even though they have nothing inside them that is compelled to do so! we have gay people! no seriously soukoku is basically canon! they're so fucked!
im in really really really really really normal amounts of love with chuuya

Hi! I just wanted to say I rly love your blog and your takes!! I don’t really considered myself someone who is particularly good at analysis or finding themes or anything, but one thing I’ve sort of maybe noticed w/ bsd (that idek if it’s intentional or if it’s just me or if it’s something people knew about already and I’m just insanely late to the party)
but I think there’s sort of an undercurrent about coping with the fact that your abuser actually taught you something good, (or at least tried to do something good for you) and dealing with the complicated feelings with that? Or at least coming to the realization that the people who hurt you were equally hurt (obviously ik the cycle of violence theme + the idea of grey morality are both talked about a lot in bsd) but I was thinking back to the reveal w/ the headmaster, with the whole port mafia mori -> dazai-> akutagawa -> kyouka(?) deal, and now with aya and her father? Like how do you exist knowing that someone made your life hell taught you something to save the life of someone else? Idk! This is insanely bare bones and superficial but I just wanted to get it off my chest because it feels like the first coherent thought I’ve had since ever lol! Hope you have a good day (and sorry this got so long)
Hello, thank you for your kind words, they warm my heart!!
I can see what you say, having to deal with the good abuse caused is definitely something bsd explores, more or less sensitively. It's embodied in the way Dazai says to Atsushi “you were in hell... And hell raised you right” after the orphanage director died. In ultimate analysis, it all leads back to bsd's grey morality view: nobody in bsd is entirely good or entirely bad, and that shows in how it's a series filled with good people doing bad things and evil people doing good things.

Just some 3am thoughts
Why are my favorite bsd characters dazai and sigma?
Because I just wanna die, have absolutely no will to live, is in the second decade of my life and I already wanna quit it (no wonder why sigma wanted to die after barely three years. If I had the amount of anxiety he's had, I would've buried myself alive) and I'm always tired.
Because I have problems...
I also love chuuya, akutagawa, atsushi, ranpo, poe, fyodor, nikolai, yosano, kunikida, mushitaro, fukuzawa, higuchi, gin, tachihara, hirotsu, kyoka, kenji, tanizaki, tetcho, jouno, teruko, ango, oda, lovecraft and this list just goes on! Literally, it depends on the phase...
The fact that which character gets more spot light and screen time. I literally love every single character introduced in this anime. Bungou stray dogs is the ground breaker for morally grey characters with jokes on suicide and comical nihilism. (Maybe I'm just self-projecting)
Villains have class and elegance! [We don't talk about fukuchi here...] amazing motivations and not two whole episodes back stories that we have to watch BEFORE their introduction...
The characters feel so REAL and well-designed. Every single design is unique and breathtaking, the personality and motivations come naturally to the character.
I even ended up liking all the villains (not the minor ones). I don't hate fukuchi and mori also. [I'm so canceled] because as much as they are annoying and disgusting, their actions make sense. They are the perfect examples of empathetic villains. Fukuchi's war trauma hits hard for a person like me who's witnessed war herself. For mori I gotta say that... that... he is disgusting but his attempts to protect yokohama and his organization gives him value as a character. He is a character with a unique mentality and a much more grounded genius than dazai and ranpo who is as logical as a math equation. I don't like him (I can never forgive him for the things that he made yosano go through) but I like the way he's written. I only say this because beast mori exists...
When I say I like a character, that doesn't mean that I agree with their actions but personally, I have no problem rooting for a mentally ill terrorist on his journey to become a bird. I mean he just silly like that!! I love nikolai and his extreme ideology because gogol is my favorite writer in real life.
Fyodor was an absolute favorite for me, I am obsessed with dostoevsky's books (especially the gambler) so seeing anime boy raskolnikov was a huge 😍 moment, definitely. But he is much more than that (much more than a jerk to the bone for stabbing my sigma like that...) he is canonically soft and humble and his every move is filled with so much grace (I'm not talking about the anime fyodor, the manga fyodor had a way better display of this...) he is extremly intelligent, a tempting deal-maker type of manipulative psychopath and a huge mastermind who has questionable morals... AND his character design is cute. Not just cute, cute in a baby girl way...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I know what I said... [please leave me and my double standards alone...]
What the hell even is this?!? I wanted to talk about dazai and sigma... this is what I get for typing while I'm barely awake...

Who is the most babygirl in Bungou Bungou? -Pookie <3
You’re getting a long winded answer to this, so lets go through the contestants
Warning! Slight BSD Manga and Anime spoilers
We’re only using ADA and PM characters for this for the sake of my sanity. We’ll go through a quick rundown to eliminate some of the people from the running based on the following criteria. Remember, babygirl is a state of mind and has nothing to do with gender or age, instead a babygirl usually has these contributing factors
- morals
- cat attributes
- bloodied
- tragic
- tired
Now for the characters who are not babygirl
- Kenji
- Kyouka
- Oda
- Mori
- Tanizaki
- Naomi
- Kunikida
- Gin
- Kouyou
- Motojiro
- Q
- Hirotsu
And for our runners :
- Dazai
- Atsushi
- Chuuya
- Ranpo
- Akutagawa
- Tachihara
- Yosano
- Fukuzawa
To thin out the running we’ll go through our criteria for each of these characters and why they are or are not babygirl enough for our purposes. We’ll pick the three top babygirl characters and move from there.
Dazai fits our criteria almost to a T. He’s strange and unsettling, he’s morally (dark) grey, he does the asshole cat smirk, and he’s tragic. In the manga and the show he doesn’t get bloodied very often, and he isn’t shown to be tired in the way that really makes or breaks a babygirl character
Atsushi is lower on my list than I’d like to admit, as I love him dearly and he’s my babygirl at heart. He gets bloodied often (and he looks great doing it, might I add) but where the evil would exist in a babygirl character he’s pathetic instead, which is a babyboy character trait. He has plenty of cat attributes and he’s plenty tragic, though I wouldn’t say he’s tired in the babygirl way. (Side note, Beast!Atsushi is DEFINITELY the winner of the babygirl category for me, but we’re focusing on the main story here)
Chuuya has got a lot going for him in the babygirl categories. He’s a little bit evil, at the very least morally grey, he’s tragic, and he’s only just barely earned his babygirl-tired title. He’s unfortunately lacking in cat attributes, and though he doesn’t get bloodied as much as I’d like for my purposes the use of corruption fills that slot.
Ranpo is a grey area for me in terms of babygirl-ness. He isn’t bloodied often (a running theme with the smarter of the babygirls) but he does have the cat smirk that Dazai has which gives him cat attributes. He’s morally grey, and he’s relatively tragic (though, compared to some of the other babygirls not so much). He’s not babygirl tired, either.
Akutagawa is really up there for me in these criteria. He’s morally grey, deeply tragic, and the epitome of babygirl tired. He gets bloodied pretty often which is so great for my purposes, but he’s lacking in cat attributes in canon. You can argue for fanon a lot but the most canon attributes he has is that he’s aloof even if he likes you.
Tachihara is one of my personal babygirl takes, he’s relatively tragic and he’s morally (light) grey (and he’s a double agent which is like the most babygirl thing ever). He doesn’t have any cat attributes and he’s not babygirl tired but he does get a little bloodied but only once which is pushing it for the babygirl scale
Yosano is so real and amazing and beautiful and perfect. Shes morally grey which is part of her being tragic, she gets bloodied often (part of her ability) which is so great. She isnt a super cat-like character and she’s not babygirl tired but she is a secret third thing (my favorite character in the series) which bumps her up a little bit.
Fukuzawa has the extra babygirl treat of having seventeen kids. He isn’t the babygirl level of tragic that I usually look for but he is the embodiment of babygirl levels of tired so he has that going for him. He’s pretty morally grey and he has what I like to call “old street cat” attributes, but we don’t see him bloodied often.
Based off these analyses I’ve narrowed it down to the following characters :
- Atsushi
- Dazai
- Yosano
From this running now I’ll be looking at how they look and how they act. This includes fashion choices, hair choices, and how they treat the people around them.
Atsushi definitely dresses the most like a babygirl. He wears suspenders on top of a white button down with a tie and NO VEST. And he’s got the stupid flood pants with the flared boots, he just makes horrendous fashion choices which is so babygirl of him. Not to mention the atrocious haircut, horrible really. However the way he interacts with people (outside of Akutagawa, of course) is more babyboy than it is babygirl.
Dazai is just on the cusp of babygirl clothing. The bandages really add to his look, but what really makes it for me is the full trenchcoat in all weather. Babygirl behavior. The way he interacts with others is also very babygirl, seeing as he’s an ass and I want to beat him to death and also hold him gently in my hands (the typical reaction to babygirl character).
Yosano doesn’t dress babygirl pretty much at all (she dresses relatively boring and they should have given her more because she deserves it) but the way she interacts with others is so very babygirl its nuts. Absolutely bonkers.
FINAL ANSWER THAT YOU’VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR : The most babygirl character in all of Bungou Stray Dogs is the one and only Dazai Osamu. He’s the perfect balance on most babygirl scales as well as personality, social interactions, and clothing choices.
If you actually read all this thank you and drink some water or something idk

this most recent chapter was so strange because what happened was obviously shocking, but also, i wasnt shocked?? I mean this is very incharacter for him the only reason so many people are surpised is because they've convinced themselves Dazais someone he's not/the double black relationship is something its not- imo- like whats new? I don't hate Dazai any more than I did before because nothings changed djdjdjsjd
OOH YEAH AN OPPORTUNITY FOR ME TO TALK ABOUT THE NEW CHAPTER
Alright. Listen.
You’re very Right, anon, And I agree with you very much. Yes, it was surprising and I definitely wouldn’t have expected it to go that way. No, it wasn’t out of character at all. Dazai is just Like That. We all should know this by now.
It feels like people keep mixing up what’s fanon and what’s canon. I personally have nothing against people making their own fanon version of the existing characters. But when it comes to the point where people complain about a character acting “out of character” when he does something that goes against their headcanons or a fanon interpretation. It’s like. Go write your own story then if you don’t like this one.
Also regarding people hating on the author because they don’t like the direction he’s taking the story: it’s as if they aren’t aware that they could stop reading it at any time they want. No one’s holding you at gunpoint forcing you to read BSD (or any other book for that matter), and if someone is you should probably call the cops I guess?
Dazai drowning Chuuya isn’t something he ever gave any indication of being against doing. The very first time we see them team up Dazai has Chuuya use Corruption longer than necessary, just for fun. He definitely doesn’t care much about causing or allowing Chuuya to experience any level of physical pain. I don’t believe that he particularly wants Chuuya dead, but if he decides that it’s necessary, I believe it’s a sacrifice he’d be willing to make.
Now, do I believe Chuuya will die? No, I’m positive he won’t. Whether he’ll live because Dazai planned something to save him, or he’ll live because of some other factor, I don’t know.
And in terms of Dazai’s current morality— killing definitely doesn’t bother him. At all. So the question then becomes who he’s willing to kill. I’d say all agency members are people who he’d absolutely never kill, and he’d do his best to make sure they don’t die. But mafia members are his pawns. He knows them and knows their abilities, and will make use of them in any way he deems fit. It would be too much of a compliment to him to call him morally grey— the mafia is morally grey*, Dazai leans a lot more towards the black.
*excluding Mori, who also uses people as his pawns. Except for him, it feels a lot less random. He uses people for a purpose, not just ‘cause he can and finds it entertaining.
Anyway I’m not sure where I’m going with this—TL;DR Dazai just really likes using people- Dazai doesn’t care if people die in the process so long as they’re not agency members- Dazai never made any indication of caring about Chuuya’s physical well-being so I’m not sure why we’re all so surprised now- Dazai’s an Asshole and none of this is out of character for him.

I keep going back and forth on how I feel about both the Watchmaker books having a ‘paranoid’ female ex-love interest as an antagonist. Like, if I had a nickel, amirite? And yet….
Like, let me jump ahead to Pepperharrow first because I legitimately love her. She’s funny and charming and definitely not a malicious or jealous person. I know she was wrong about Mori, ultimately, but like… if *I* saw my clairvoyant spouse intentionally let my best friend get murdered by her abusive alcoholic husband, I’d be outraged as well. I’d hardly be inclined to trust them after that. And, despite it all, Pepper didn’t even want *revenge*. She just thought the world needed to be protected from someone as functionally powerful as Mori.
Which brings me back to Grace, who I’m less inclined to think well of. Grace Carrow made some very real mistakes — she got jealous and petty, even though her marriage to Thaniel was explicitly one of convenience. She lashed out when it was undeserved (cutting the pears out of the trees — I mean seriously). But, while these flaws certainly made her biased against Mori… she technically wasn’t wrong.
To be clear, I don’t mean that her actions are morally correct. She shouldn’t have interfered in Thaniel’s life beyond their friendship and the deal between them, and she certainly shouldn’t have hurt Mori like that. However, her underlying belief — that Mori was someone who would use his clairvoyance to manipulate events and people to bring about specific outcomes, even if someone was hurt in the process — is absolutely true. The only flaw in her assumption is that, in reality, those ‘specific outcomes’ are always in Thaniel’s best interests. Mori rearranges the world for Thaniel’s sake.
This, I think, actually feeds back into another theme in the book: people’s perceptions of Thaniel. Grace can’t see Mori’s devotion to Thaniel because she, like many other people, don’t really consider him ‘special’ enough to warrant that kind of interest from someone like Mori. To Grace, Thaniel is just an ex-musician, an office worker. He’s appealing because he’s open-minded and soft-tempered, but he’s ultimately Just Some Guy. She doesn’t understand that those are just roles thrust upon him, and not a reflection of his authentic self.
The Thaniel that Mori knows, and that the reader knows, is an utter delight of a person. He’s a musician and an artist. A synesthete. He’s deeply loyal and a huge softie (felt guilty for locking Katsu in a drawer — offered his socks to apologize). He’s willing to make major sacrifices for the people he cares about, over and over again. He’s clever and sarcastic when the situation calls for it. He can forge signatures (and will do simply for efficiency).
I’m not saying Thaniel’s some Chosen One set apart from all the rest of humanity. But he’s bright and distinct and real, and it’s not actually as shocking as all that that someone would love him like Mori does.
… That was all a huge tangent, but the point is, Grace wasn’t wrong that Mori is a morally grey character; she was just wrong that he was using Thaniel. And Pepper wasn’t wrong that Mori acts in the interests of the ‘big picture’; she was just wrong that he was so uncaring as to kill Countess Kuroda in cold blood.
Given all this, I’m less inclined to write off the series as mistreating it’s female characters. I still wish Grace had been less Like That, but I can’t really fault Pepper, and I’m not really jumping to insist that the pattern reflects badly on Natasha Pulley for writing it that way.

for the character asks dazai!!
favorite thing about them
i love how complex he is. i've always been drawn to morally grey characters but dazai is just so my type of character it's ridiculous. like at the same time dazai did horrible things to Akutagawa and he's trying to do better on nothing but his old friend's words that he can be better. he is this exact mix of morally grey that i love playing with
least favorite thing about them
I mean,,, well it's kind of obvious. how he treated most people under him in the port mafia, especially akutagawa. aku deserved much better than dazai, and while my thoughts on it are somewhat complicated, dazai was most definitely in the wrong.
also!! leaving chuuya in the woods was unfortunately in character but hhhh
favorite line

brOTP
dazai & ranpo!! i mean I wrote almost 15k about them and it's just!!! the way ranpo can see through dazais walls and dazai can catch up with his deductions but neither of them say anything because they already Know. it's the intimacy of knowing that the other person can deduce your whole life in front of you but is kind enough not to, and it's the comradery of being the two smartest people in a room
OTP
I like playing with most dazai ships, but I do really love soukoku. They know each other inside out, and they would trust each other with their lives, but they wouldn't trust each other with anything else, and its a very fun dynamic to play with!! it's That Dynamic mixed with the messiness of dazai disappearing for four years and both of them know that the ada is better for dazai, but that doesnt remove the sting of betrayal and the hurt that chuuya felt and just!!! ahhh theyre such a fun ship
nOTP
I like mori/dazai in the sense of like,,, catharsis for angst, but I hate them shipped romantically. them as trying to manipulate things out of each other and dazai getting away from it? hell yeah! them romantically or genuinely softly? no.
other than that,,, dazai/akutagawa makes me uncomfortable because of obvious reasons and dazai/atsushi squicks me out because of the power dynamic
random headcanon
dazai gets really niche interests that no one else knows about , and sometimes he'll drop a really specific fact about something like classic russian films
unpopular opinion
well I have a Lot but most of them are more of me being frustrated with the way people write him? but if we're doing actual unpopular opinions then I would say that the four years of separation between him and chuuya (and the larger port mafia) was a good thing in the long run. it let them grow more outside of each other, and it allowed them to realize that their lives don't have to be each other even if they end up romantically involved. not to mention that even if he leaves people behind, dazai leaving the cycle of abuse is good.
song i associate with them

The “parreshia” in Bungou Stray Dogs
I want to talk with you about a concept that I’m sure that the 99% of you don’t know about: the parreshia (παρρεθία). Also, I want to say that this analysis is based in this lecture of Michel Focault.
Definition of parreshia
“What is that?” you are probably thinking. It’s a Greek term, specifically, an old Greek term. It could be translated as free speech in English, in French it has been translated as French-parler and in German as freimüthigkeit. Also, I want to say that the verb is parrhesiazestai (παρρεσιαθεσται) and means to say everything, “pan” [παύ] (everything) and “rhema” [δήμα] (that which is said). (If you are wonder why the word and the etymology doesn’t concur… it’s the magic of the languages).
In which sense it used?
According to Focault:
In parreshia, the speaker [parrehsiastes; “someone who says everything he has in mind”] is supposed to give a complete and exact account of what he has in mind […]. The speaker makes it manifestly clear and obvious that what he says in his own opinion […], avoiding any kind of rhetorical form.
But there’s an important point that we don’t have to forget:
The parrhesiastes is not only sincere and says what is his opinion, but his opinion is also truth. […] The parrhesiastes seems to have [not] any doubts about his own possession of the truth.
So, what is the difference between someone sincere and a parrhesiastes?
If there is a kind of “proof” of the sincerity of the parrhesiastes, it his courage. […] Someone is said to use parrhesia and merits consideration as a parrhesiastes only if there is a risk or a danger for him or her in telling the truth.
This risk could be the risk of dying, but also could be losing a friend, your reputation, your job or your status.
This parreshia could only come from “below”, directed towards “above” because if this doesn’t occur, it hasn’t the danger. For that reason, a student who criticizes a teacher because he explains badly is a parrhesiastes, but a teacher who says what a student is doing wrong, it isn’t: the student is risking of a punishment, the teacher doesn’t have that risk.
In parrhesia, the speaker uses his freedom and chooses frankness instead of persuasion, truth instead of falsehood or silence, the risk of death instead of life and security, criticism instead of flattery, and moral duty instead of self-interest and moral apathy.
Introduction. Agency of the Detective: the parrhesiastes
First of all, I want to explain why the Agency are the parrhesiastes of this arc (vs the Decay of the Angels).
The ADA always have wanted to discover the truth, the real culprit, the real reason. But, also, they always try to cause the less damage possible. What I find interesting, is that they don’t act until they have to (until someone come for help to the office or Yokohama is in danger). The ADA don’t have ambition, unlike Mori, for example, who always wants to expand his criminal empire, they only “live the day” doing what is correct, specifically, what is correct in the law. (Although, we could do another analysis with the alignment of the ADA, but in my opinion, they are between lawful good and chaotic good).
Tumblr media
But the most important thing is the ADA don’t have the ambition to be famous or demonstrate they are right, they only do what is right (although is true that BSD centers around the concept there always isn’t white or black, but because the detectives are on the side of the law, they do what is right). They are selfless, despite the fact that this is their job, they are detectives for different reason, the majority of them for selfless reasons: Atsushi because, with this job, he has a reason to live: help people; Fukuzawa founded the Agency for Ranpo, not for himself; Kunikida has his ideal to do always what is right (because he has a black and white mentality, although he is changing in the lasts arcs, realizing the world is grey).
I think the only ones who has “selfish” reasons for go to the Agency are Dazai, the brothers and Yosano: Yosano works as detective because they only want her kindness, not her power; Dazai, because he want to fulfill his promise and be a better person; and the brothers (Tanizaki and Naomi) because they needed a job, although we don’t know their past. Even with that, I don’t think these people really have a selfish reason.
As I quoted before:
The parrhesiastes is not only sincere and says what is his opinion, but his opinion is also truth. […]
The ADA has had it easily because they were on the side of the law, and the Agency is “a place with no many rules” as it has stated in the epilogue of Dark Era light novel. Due to that, they can follow their instinct and investigate what they think should be investigated; although is true they don’t have to respond to anyone, except their clients.
Tumblr media
In parrhesia, the speaker uses his freedom and chooses frankness instead of persuasion, truth instead of falsehood or silence, the risk of death instead of life and security, criticism instead of flattery, and moral duty instead of self-interest and moral apathy.
I could extend a lot talking about this, but long story short, the ADA always have been the parrhesiastes of this story: they discover the truth because it their job, but also because they really want to know it because they really think the truth is better for everybody, otherwise, they wouldn’t strive to save the city every time it is in danger.
But, being sincere, they didn’t become in parrhesiastes until this arc (vs Decay of the Angel) because they haven’t been in the side of “below”: they are “below” of the Hunting Dogs now, who are “above” of them now that the ADA are criminals and they aren’t on the side of the law.

International Fanworks Day: Feedback Fest Recs
So, this is gonna be a long one.
Harry Potter
I will always remain partial to Memento Mori, my first great love amongst fanfictions. @colubrina is go-to for well-thought-out Dramione fics (and Tomione when I’m feeling more cynical). I have a soft spot for Percy, so Irrational has a place in my heart and I will forever lament it being unfinished. And The Best Revenge is a perfect happy!Harry story, unless you really dislike Severus.
The rest is basically SSHG heaven: anything by AriadneAWS or Loten, Camerado, and for a little drama The Princess of Gryffindor and When A Lioness Fights (both are a little over the top, but who doesn’t enjoy that from time to time?). Plus my favourite shorts, Snape and Sympathy and Once More, With Feeling (a marriage law fic with a twist).
Tolkien
When I got back into Tolkien fandom, thanks largely to The Hobbit movies, the first thing I read was Skin Deep, and it’s largely owing to that that I go hooked again. What is and always will be my favourite, though, is Dancing With My Punchlines, which is a modern AU, but the awesomest modern AU that ever was. Anything else from  @imindhowwelayinjune is gold as well, though. Flawed and Fair is a Glorfindel/Ecthelion must-read for everyone, and Gofi and the Balrog is my personal cutesy kidfic favourite.
Star Trek
Winds Against a Star for Uhura/Spock. I’m pretty sure there were others, but for some reason I don’t have them favourited, so...
Sherlock
Given my love for Mycroft, have As We Are, As We Were which focuses on his relationship with Sherlock.
Austen
Paradoxically enough, I tend to prefer Austen fics that are mostly or entirely silly, so: The Brighton Effect and A Matter of Secrecy.
Star Wars
There is only one rec I want to give here, the brilliant Kylux series Children, Wake Up. You probably wouldn’t expect the epic levels it reaches from the way it starts...
Teen Wolf
There’s a lot of guilty pleasures in this one. It’s all either Sterek or Steter. My fave Sterek is definitely the Searching Ceremonies series (soulmate AU, but really well thought out), but Fireman Derek’s Crazy Pie is always amusing to read. For Steter, let me put in Write Me Love Notes In Glitter Glue - I will forever weep over this being unfinished, too - and then most stuff taylorpotato writes.
Dragon Age
I’m a Solasmancer forever, so: Bread Wolf Bake You, another tragically unfinished masterpiece (and a modern AU), @theDuckPond, a modern AU that is finished and often uncomfortably close to home, Pride’s Price for a fix-it, and the amazingly thought out Unending Wake and its AU for something rather heavier.
MCU
My latest obsession. I’m all about GammaFrost and FrostIron, so Say Goodbye To Yesterday (who doesn’t like time loops?), Those Sinned Against for some dark grey morality, and Fractals Of A Criminal Mind for a perfect AU (though most of the stuff STARSdidathing writes is great).
Phew. That was exhausting. I hope I haven’t forgotten any of my faves, but to be honest it’s entirely likely...

This week plunged us right back, head first, into the story of an old god of destruction, the ghost of an evil man and fifteen year old Chuuya and Dazai chasing after them. Almost immediately, I prefered this episode to the last. And that’s saying something because I quite liked the last one.
Do you guys like my gif. I’ve been making them lately. Also – all the spoilers, if you haven’t seen the episode, it’ll be like you did after reading this!
oh why thank you…ok, so this review is going to be positive..I mean, you can’t buy me!
We open on a dizzyingly well animated action scene as Chuuya and Dazai have to deal with the armed welcome committee they encountered at the mansion. Of course I always knew that Chuuya has an extremely powerful gift, but I had never quite gotten my mind around all the potential applications. Seeing him fight multiple enemies with childish glee was impressive and mesmerizing. It gave me a new appreciation for just how cool gravity manipulation is.
And a few minutes later, I got a whole new appreciation for just how terrifying Dazai is. There’s always been something uncomfortable about Dazai’s character. Bungou Stray Dogs tends to be bloodless and lighthearted in general so his personality has always been skimmed over or used for laughs but Dazai is not o.k…. Not at all. He pushes way past anti-hero into actual villain territory pretty often. I guess what Mori said last episode was true. Those two really are alike.
and we had started off so well…
About 5 minutes in and I was fully captivated. The visuals were stunning, the character developments riveting and the atmosphere somehow managed to be disturbing, ominous and yet cheerful all at once. Superimposing ll that violence over such a beautiful lush garden on a sunny afternoon. Good move.
I don’t remember exactly when it cut in, but we also got an OP for the first time this week. It was decent. I quite liked the song. The visuals were mostly stylized still images. No special but good.
Turns out the ability user they were visiting, and those armed guys were trying to take out, was none other than Rando. I had to look it up last week to find out it’s actually Arthur Rimbaud (french poet – good one – died quite young). There was something both sneering and incredibly fitting at watching the eternally cold Rimbaud dispassionately throwing books into his fire lace to keep warm. As a big fan of the poet, that scene resonated with me. I like to think that he would have enjoyed it.
is the state of the mansion a reference to how Rimbaud died in poverty? ohhh I made myself sad.
Basically this s what we know so far. 8 years ago, a god like creature named Arahabaki almost destroyed an entire city with an explosion of *black flame* then disappeared. In the past weeks, there have been sightings of those black flames again with the Port Mafia’s old boss at the center. Rimbaud was a witness at one of the last sightings.
Dazai is pretty sure the whole thing is an elaborate hoax. A simple chemical reaction can make ordinary flames look black and there are many ways to make people think they saw someone who isn’t there. Especially in stressful conditions. But who would be putting on this hoax.
As for the armed guys. They’re just a rival faction. Rimbaud’s new loyalty to Mori is helping calm down and unify the Port Mafia. If he were to suddenly be dispatched (especially in a see of black flames) that could spark mutiny in the ranks and greatly weaken the organisation. I dunno why I bothered writing about these guys. Chuuya already took care of them.
wait, you’re getting ahead here
Dazai isn’t the least bit thrown off when Rimbaud tells him what what he saw was definitely not a hoax, but it wasn’t the od boss either. He describes his encounter with Arahabaki and is visibly still shaken by it.
At this point I was intrigued. BSD is very loose with it’s rules. There definitely could be a great old god out there. Heck, there could even be a vengeful mafia boss ghost. This should really not be playing in the show’s favour. Universes where everything’s possible tend to get boring, and flashbacks with characters we know have no long term stakes. Yet, I’m eating this up so far. It’s well paced and interesting. They manage to make this bonker story just convincingly enough for me to want to find out what happens next.
Well what does happen next is some comedy relief banter between Chuuya and Dazai. Chuuya has a running gag that he’s only 15 and is going to get taller. it’s cute. They also make some silly bet at an arced, because they’re kids. Whoever figures out who’s behind it all first, get to boss the other one round. It’s always hard to tell with Dazai, but I think he might actually like Chuuya.
oh Chuuya…so easy…
Some bad timing means that Chuuya has an unfortunate encounter with some Sheep members and gets himself thrown out for collaborating with the Port Mafia. One thing I noticed throughout the episode, is that everybody seems to know Chuuya. No one knows Dazai. I wonder why he’s so popular!
Usually when shows have genius characters that can figure/plan everything out, there’s a fair bit of contrivances and intuitive leaps going on. It’s very difficult to consistently write these archetypes in a satisfying way. Dazai is no exception. But this time it worked. Because it was very simple. That’s the key to making your mysteries impactful. keep them straightforward.
and to the point
Dazai is throwing Chuuya a party to celebrate his new freedom with Rimbaud as the only guest. Let’s face it, neither of these guys have many friends. While waiting for the guest of honor Dazai an Rimbaud chat a bit and the conversation falls n the bet. At this point Dazai reveals he’s won and he knows the culprit.
In traditional sitcom style, Dazai calmy points at Rimbaud as the traitor both men just pleasantly chat while Dazai explains. This is where I was expecting a flood of coincidences and hard to follow mental contortionist but no. Simple answers are the best answers. Rimbaud’s description of the events of the previous week insisted on him seeing the sea. Yet he would have been in the middle of the crater. The sea is clearly not visible from there. The scene he described, could only have taken place before the xplosion 8 years ago.
And speaking of explosions, Chuuya sure knows how to make an entrance.
congratulations, you’re guilty!
Seems Chuuya also figured out it was Rimbaud behind it all but how? He simply says that all the other witnesses described seeing the boss’ face while Rimbaud described the actual Arahabaki and is simply not possible….
The episode ends on a shocking reveal. The fact that there was something that Dazai had not anticipated! I know, jaw dropped!
right!!!
But you must be asking yourselves. What exactly aren’t you ready for Irina??? Well basically this felt like an ending. That season 2 opening arc I keep droning on about was adapted from a light novel rather than the manga proper. It was a side story meant to give Dazai a bit of background. Thi explains the shift in tone and pacing. It was riveting. A bit of research has revealed that the present episodes are also adapted from a light novel. It’s entirely possible that the last second reveal marked the end of this particular journey and that next episode will bring us back to the present.
And I’m not ready. Sure I would love to see the rest of the gang again but I still have so many questions. I can guess Rimbaud’s motivations. He was not quite as loyal to Mori as he seemed and considering Mori staged a coup, he’s made plenty of enemies. There’s no need to go into that much deeper but, what about Chuuya. His character is up in the air right now. Not to mention Dazai who is rather worryingly unhinged at this point. Why did Mori bring them together in the first place.
And beyond the questions, I’m still enjoying this more mature and severe story. It has consequences and a lot of questionable morality. I enjoy shades of grey. I’m not ready to say goodbye to the comedy duo of angsty teenage Dazai and Chuuya. I hope to see them again next week. Fingers crossed!
agreed
in the meantime, you can see them in the dozens of screencaps I took!
