Listen to me. Listen. If you give me the chance to talk about a Henry figure skater au I will NEVER shut up about it. He's so incredibly elite skater coded you don't even know. Brenner is so incredibly "coach who's after glory and doesn't care that he's pushing kids to their breaking points" coded.
I'm going to talk about it under the cut because I have SO much to say
Henry's signature jumping pass is a delayed double axel. What he misses in points on it, he makes up with artistry points and upgrading other jumps to quads. He's one of the few mens skaters who can do a proper Bielmann. His technique is strong, but his artistry is stronger. His nimbleness on the ice and the way he seems suspended in midair on his delayed 2A are what gets him nicknamed "the spider". He's generally quiet and unhappy, which everyone mistakes for him being heartless and aloof. He's not, it's just that Brenner doesn't know when to stop pushing, which is why Henry is never smiling in his press releases. He got two consecutive grand prix finals gold medals before The Scandal where he supposedly attacked a fellow skater before having The most disastrous injury the skating world has ever seen. He's rumored to have killed himself after the whole debacle. (He's not dead. He bums around Hawkins Community Ice Arena at the early freestyle sessions that No One ever attends...except Eleanor Hopper, when Jim can get his ass out of bed to take her) Virginia originally wanted him to "be a man" and do hockey while Alice did FS, but he's not um. built for that, exactly. So she stuck him with Brenner hoping Brenner could make something useful out of him.
When they were younger: Scott (who's part of AV club in addition to working on the school paper) was Not a team sports guy and would rather find more interesting things than football, and who better to talk about than the kid who's going to junior nationals?? They fall out of touch when they've graduated and Henry's time is completely monopolized by Brenner, who wants to craft him into the perfect super-weapon of a skater (spoiler: all he actually does is give him a mental breakdown, a physical breakdown, and get him banned from competition by framing him once he's showing signs of becoming obsolete)
Henry's disaster injury that I mentioned earlier comes about from years of simply being pushed consistently past his limit mentally and physically. He's exhausted. Everyone's body has a breaking point, and he happens to hit that point in the middle of an uncharacteristically sloppy routine on a botched 4Lz. He cracks his skull on the ice, and he's "lucky" he didn't die. It may not have killed him, but it did make his memory of the events leading up to the injury spotty at best, which makes it that much easier for Brenner to pin everything on him being a bad seed with whom he did his best.
After being all but excommunicated from the FS community, Henry drops off the face of the Earth. No one but Scott, Victor, and Alice know what he's up to (which is: dating Scott and having a much needed mental health break).
Henry flies under the radar that way until he meets El, who happens to have been training under Brenner for several years. Henry totally poaches her from Brenner, even though he himself has zero coaching experience. It's alright, because he and El are on the same wavelength when it comes to their approaches to complex skills. The only pictures of him smiling at press releases are after he takes El on as a student.
El absolutely smacks Angela in the face with her skate. Jonathan, high, tells her it could have been so much worse, at least she had her rubber blade guard on. Henry poaching El from Brenner is what reintroduces him to the skating community, but his defense of El in her mini-scandal reopens the overdue investigation into his own scandal. Deeper digging reveals the depth of Brenner's involvement, as well as evidence of decades of concealed abuse within the relationship.
Henry and Alice did pairs as children, and they were actually a pretty good team. Alice fell out of the sport after a bad fall, which Virginia blames Henry for (and Henry silently blames himself for). The blame and guilt in that regard only makes it easier for Brenner to be a piece of shit and get away with it.
Lonnie wanted Will to do hockey. Will isn't the hockey type, but he does enjoy bumming around with El and the Party at public skate. Mike is literally Bambi on ice, but it's endearing.
Jim 100% thought Henry was creeping on El at the early freestyle sessions until he figured out that oh. Henry's with Scott, and Brenner's the sicko. He and Henry started out on the wrong foot and never really recovered from it. They're like two feral cats forced to share territory.
This is 100% me self-indulging with Henry and El's mentor-student potential. He's her rink Dad, okay?
HCIA is nicknamed the "Rainbow Rink" a) because of the rainbow tiling on the lobby floor, and later b) because it's associated with Henry, who's rumored (later confirmed) to be gay.
Scott is also Bambi on ice. It's okay, it's just another reason for him to hold Henry's hand <3

As May is Mental Health Awareness month, I have collaborated with @MyNumberStory to spread awareness regarding ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences) and childhood adversity! I am honored to share a bit of my own experience growing up in a pressured environment, and how I found art as a means of healing.
*Trigger Warning: self-harm, divorce, emotional abuse, mental illness*
Prior to the hardships I will address, my childhood was a golden thing. I grew up next door to my cousins who served as my sisters, as I was an only child. I did well in school, was immensely social and outgoing, spent summers vacationing in the Outer Banks of North Carolina with my family religiously every August. My father and uncle coached my cousins’ and I’s softball team. Our house settled on a quaint, country 2.5 acres of land at the edge of a quiet Virginia county was a hub for love. My parents were high school sweethearts. As a young girl, I oozed with promise.
When I turned thirteen, life was altered. My father found a new hand to hold behind my mother’s back. My mother turned to excessive drinking to cope. I turned loner. I recall nestling myself in the corner of my bedroom many nights, drowning out the monumental arguments through headphones blaring. Slamming doors. Plates being thrown in the kitchen. I recall so many evenings spent silently crying myself to sleep, desperately wondering where my loving household had gone.
My father moved out. I was thrown into therapy to learn how to navigate my feelings regarding my parents' divorce, and in turn, discovered underlying mental health struggles already present. I was diagnosed at fourteen with major depression, generalized anxiety disorder, and social anxiety. I tried many medications; Prozac, Paxil, Lexapro, and eventually Effexor XR (which I still take to this day). However, throughout my high school years, I found tooth and nail with my disorders, having not found a working medication until after I graduated. My grades were affected heavily, as I did not have the motivation to excel. I felt pressured regardless due to my cousins’ being in the top 10 of their class, which sadly, only left me feeling more defeated rather than being a motivator.
I visited my father every other weekend, and in turn, his new wife. When I was fifteen, they married. I cannot begin to describe the heart-wrenching effect she had on my mom and I, let alone our entire family. Without bringing up too many traumatic memories, many days and nights alike were spent conversing with police. She projected paranoid delusions on to those close around her, my father and I the main subjects. Around this time, I truly dove into struggling with self-harm. (Thankfully, I am currently three years self-harm free, and my father has escaped that toxic relationship and we both have mostly healed from what damage was caused by her.)
As my journey continued into teenage years, I served as an outlet for my mother to project her pain onto. I was struggling, she was struggling. We would bark back and forth about our turmoil to one another, harming our bond more than we realized. It was at this time I would stay closed in my room, finding comfort in creating collages, handwritten quote art, and poetry. The effect art therapy had on my growth, healing, and mental state was astronomical. It has now been over ten years since I first began that journey and strongly continue striding down that path.
Though my story has not been fully disclosed in this text, I feel many can find my story to be particularly relatable to those currently or had dealt with divorcing parents and learning to understand one’s own neurodivergence. You are not, and never have been, alone.
My number is a 3. Take the test to discover yours at NumberStory.org
Please follow @MyNumberStory and check out NumberStory.org to learn more about childhood adversity and the long-term effects of toxic stress on mental health, physical health and more.
(About the artwork: in this collage piece, I used a photograph of an abandoned sanitorium as the background, showcasing how it felt to be trapped inside of my new diagnoses of major depression and anxiety disorders as a child. The ghosts in the center represent the many personalities I felt I needed to exhibit to be accepted/understood by those around me. The ghostly woman with horns serves as a core element of my trauma; the rage, the unknown, the overwhelming emotions of comprehending my abnormal way of growing up. Lastly, the flowers in the foreground represent how on the surface things can be beautiful and healthy, the colors brightly hiding the rot beneath. The quote itself reflects that despite the emotion, working through what you are feeling is a step in the right direction towards overall healing.)

The alleged rape of a 15-year-old girl by her high school volleyball coach has sent shockwaves through the community of Virginia. The coach, who was a 37-year-old teacher, was accused of engaging in a sexual relationship with the underage student. The victim's family reported the abuse to the authorities, leading to the coach's arrest and subsequent death by suicide. The coach was facing serious felony charges, including rape and taking indecent liberties with a child. The community is reeling from the shocking news and grappling with the aftermath of the coach's tragic death. The incident has raised concerns about the safety and well-being of students in schools and the responsibility of teachers and coaches to protect their students from harm. The case highlights the importance of vigilance and accountability in preventing and addressing cases of sexual abuse and misconduct in educational settings. It serves as a reminder of the trust and authority that teachers and coaches hold over their students and the duty they have to ensure their safety and well-being. The community is mourning the loss of the coach while also grappling with the devastating impact of the alleged abuse on the victim and her family. The coach's death by suicide has added another layer of tragedy to an already disturbing and heartbreaking situation. The community is struggling to make sense of the events and to come to terms with the loss of a respected teacher and coach. The incident has raised questions about mental health, suicide prevention, and the pressures faced by individuals who find themselves caught up in such serious legal and ethical dilemmas. It serves as a grim reminder of the devastating consequences of sexual abuse and misconduct and the toll it can take on all involved. As the community mourns the loss of the coach and grapples with the aftermath of the alleged abuse, there is a renewed focus on ensuring the safety and well-being of students in schools. The case has prompted discussions about the importance of creating a culture of transparency, accountability, and support in educational institutions to prevent and address cases of sexual abuse and misconduct. It serves as a reminder of the need for ongoing vigilance and education to protect students from harm and to ensure that teachers and coaches uphold their duty to safeguard the welfare of the young people in their care.

The Psychology Podcast Joins iHeart & Prepares Your Brain For Life
Tumblr media
There are hundreds of psychology podcasts for those who either need mental health assistance, indulge their curiosity about how the mind works, or how to identify and avoid mental traps such as confirmation bias, hindsight bias, availability heuristics, The Dunning-Kruger effect or, the Texas Sharpshooter Fallacy.
The Psychology Podcast with Dr. Scott Barry Kaufman has the virtue of the most self-explanatory and facile name for a genre podcast in the industry. The title sells itself.
Thankfully for listeners, in the last ten years since the podcast began, Kaufman has delivered high-level conversations about multiple facets of psychology.
After almost a decade, Kaufman has taken the plunge. iHeartPodcasts and Dr. Scott Barry Kaufman, have announced that the Psychology Podcast, joined iHeartPodcasts on January 18. New episodes will launch every Thursday, and fans can binge previous seasons and episodes on the iHeartRadio app and everywhere podcasts are heard.
iHeart tells us: "With over 30 million listeners since its inception, The Psychology Podcast brings does bring science-backed conversations that can help listeners better manage their lives." Prior guests have included neuroscientists Andrew Huberman, Antonio Damasio, and Lisa Feldman Barrett; Linguist Noam Chomsky, psychologist Angela Duckworth, therapist Esther Perel, Nobel-prize winner Daniel Kahneman, and organizational psychologist Adam Grant.
The roster of guests may be one of the most salient benefits of the show because it is an impressive list. Kaufman is a solid interviewer and knows how to guide his guests through a cohesive dispensation of the facts and concepts they are trying to communicate.
One of my favorite episodes is a recent one with Dr. Carol Dweck. Author of one of my favorite books, Mindset (The New Psychology Of Success), Dr. Dweck is a leading researcher in the field of motivation and is the Lewis and Virginia Eaton Professor of Psychology at Stanford. Her research examines the role of mindsets in personal achievement and organizational effectiveness.
Another superb show was one in November 2023 with Angela Duckworth, who is a 2013 MacArthur Fellow and professor of psychology at the University of Pennsylvania. She has advised the White House, the World Bank, NBA and NFL teams, and Fortune 500 CEOs. More recently, she founded the Character Lab, a nonprofit whose mission is to advance the science and practice of character development in children. She is the author of Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance, another of my favorite books.
Duckworth researches self-control and grit, which is defined as passion and perseverance for long-term goals. Her research has demonstrated that there are factors that can be more predictive of success than IQ. In the episode, they covered some of her findings on grit, including academic and popular misconceptions of this work. They also discussed research on standardized testing and self-control.
“The Psychology Podcast is on a mission to help people live a more meaningful, self-actualized, and fulfilling life,” said Dr. Kaufman. “Through conversations with some of the world’s top scientists and self-actualizing people from a wide range of fields, the show provides listeners with the scientific tools and knowledge for self-improvement. As the podcast has grown, it has made sense to join forces with the number one podcast publisher—iHeartPodcasts. We are pumped up for this next chapter of the podcast.”
Scott Barry Kaufman, Ph.D., is known for his research on intelligence, creativity, and human potential. He is the founder of the Center for Human Potential and the founder of Self-Actualization Coaching. Dr. Kaufman has authored 10 books, including Choose Growth (with Jordyn Feingold).
The psychology podcast is a show worthy of your ear time. It's not Hidden Brain or Speaking of Psychology, but then both those psychology podcasts set a high bar for excellence.
The Psychology Podcast will join the iHeartPodcasts’ existing roster of ear worthy psychology podcasts, such as On Purpose with Jay Shetty, Therapy for Black Girls with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, Pushkin’s The Happiness Lab with Dr. Laurie Santos, A Slight Change of Planswith Dr. Maya Shankar, and Unbreakable with Jay Glazer.

‘Leaving Behind All They Own’ as Wildfires Ravage Million Acres in Canada (NYT) Judy Greenwood did not want to leave. But when the evacuation alerts on her phone blared repeatedly and emergency officials knocked on her door, she and her husband loaded their four cats into the car and drove away from their rural hamlet to escape approaching wildfires. In much of the western province of Alberta, this time of year has long been wildfire season. But this year, a large volume of fires in the boreal forest have come early and have been exceptionally extensive, leading the province to declare a state of emergency. As of Tuesday after, about 24,000 people were out of their homes in the sparsely populated, largely northern areas of the province as 88 active wildfires were burning across nearly one million acres. Uncertainty plagues many evacuees. Thick smoke hanging over many areas has made it impossible to determine through aerial surveys the fate of many houses and other buildings. Many of the evacuees were not just concerned about the safety of their families, but also the welfare of the cattle, horses, bison and other animals on their farms.
Students can’t get off their phones. Schools have had enough. (Washington Post) When students returned to school during the pandemic, educators quickly saw a change in their cellphone habits. More than ever, they were glued to the devices during class—posting on social media, searching YouTube, texting friends. So this year, schools in Ohio, Colorado, Maryland, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Virginia, California and others banned the devices in class to curb student obsession, learning disruption, disciplinary incidents and mental health worries. Most school systems already had cellphone bans in 2020, but the pandemic brought more urgency to places with lenient rules or lax enforcement. Some invested in ways to lock up phones away during school hours. Others forced students to keep them hidden away. The stakes are higher after the covid years, with many districts behind academically up to a year or more and doing all they can to help students catch up. Some have come to see social media—accessed via students’ phones—as a major contributor to poor mental health. But many students—who use their phones for listening to music, arranging rides home, checking on grades or assignments—are unhappy with the crackdowns. Some check in with parents or coaches by text. Some think the decision should be theirs, not a school dictate.
May Day Protests in Puerto Rico Show an Economy Still on the Brink (NYT) In Puerto Rico, protests on May 1, a long-held tradition for workers, have become a portrait of a precarious economy. No longer are the annual demonstrations limited to public schoolteachers and other unionized workers demanding better pay and working conditions. Other residents come out now, too—people fed up and frustrated that life on the island keeps getting a bit more expensive and difficult, year after year. Puerto Rico has faced an economic malaise for almost two decades. Austerity measures, imposed by an unelected fiscal oversight board created by Congress seven years ago, have chipped away at public pensions and other benefits. Also vexing are the island’s frequent power blackouts, foreign investors who buy property and displace local residents, and development projects on environmentally sensitive land. “There are so many reasons to protest,” said Luz Elena Sánchez, 73, a former counselor at the University of Puerto Rico, which has faced steep budget cuts.
Ecuadoran lawmakers put President Lasso on impeachment’s path (Washington Post) Lawmakers in Ecuador voted Tuesday to open an impeachment trial against President Guillermo Lasso, one of the few remaining conservative heads of state in South America, setting off a potential political crisis. Lasso, who is accused of embezzlement, is the first president to be sent to such proceedings since the country’s return to democracy in 1979. He has denied wrongdoing; a legislative oversight commission has recommended against impeachment. Eighty-eight members of the opposition-controlled National Assembly voted to continue with the proceedings. That was four votes shy of the two-thirds majority that will be needed to impeach. It’s the second time lawmakers have tried to impeach Lasso.
Pakistan deploys troops to halt unrest (AP) Pakistan’s government called out the military Wednesday in areas roiled by deadly violence following the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who was dragged from a courtroom and ordered held for another eight days on new corruption charges that outraged his supporters and deepened the country’s political turmoil. After Khan was arrested Tuesday, crowds in Islamabad and other major cities blocked roads, clashed with police, and set fire to police checkpoints and military facilities in violence that left six people dead and hundreds arrested. The military vowed stern action against those seeking to push Pakistan toward a “civil war.”
More than 50 churches burned amid political unrest in India (Baptist Press) Violence erupted against Christians in Manipur, India, last week amid political turmoil and tension between the Hindu population and minority Christian groups. Reports of the attacks against Christians included the burning of more than 50 churches, the destruction and looting at more than 1,000 other buildings, with thousands left homeless and fleeing to find safety, injuries to more than 300 and the death of more than 60.
Asia’s heat waves are a grim sign of the times (Washington Post) In South and Southeast Asia, it’s generally hot around this time of year. But not this hot. Temperature records have tumbled in multiple countries in recent days. Over the weekend, cities in Cambodia and Laos experienced the hottest days ever recorded in either country, with temperatures reaching 44.2 degrees Celsius, or around 112 Fahrenheit, in Vietnam’s northern Tuong Duong district, and 43.5 degrees Celsius, or around 110 Fahrenheit, in the popular Laotian tourist destination of Luang Prabang. From India to the Philippines, officials in various municipalities shuttered schools and urged locals to stay home and ward against signs of heat-induced fatigue. Scorching temperatures melted roads in Bangladesh, and numerous voters fainted as they lined up at polling stations for advance voting in Thailand’s election. Maximiliano Herrera, a climate historian who tracks temperature records, who wrote that the recent wave was “one of the most brutal heat event[s] the world has ever witnessed.” Not only are daytime temperatures breaking records, but so too the measurements after sunset, adding to the misery of countless people seeking respite from the sweltering conditions. India, the world’s most populous country, is also one of the world’s countries most vulnerable to climate change. It experienced a record-breaking set of heat waves last year, while this year it saw its hottest February in 122 years. Temperatures neared record levels in recent weeks, with dozens dying due to the conditions.
Divisive Thai ex-PM vows to return from exile after polls (AP) Thailand’s self-exiled former prime minister said Tuesday he wants to return home by July, making his declaration less than a week before the country heads to polls in which his daughter is a frontrunner. Thaksin Shinawatra tweeted for the second time this month that he would like to come home to see his grandchildren. He said he is prepared to face justice, including several convictions on charges including abuse of power and corruption. Thaksin, 73, was a populist prime minister when he was ousted by a military coup in 2006. He fled Thailand to escape a prison term in several criminal cases, which he decried as politically motivated. The government of his sister, Yingluck Shinawatra, was also toppled in a 2014 coup led by the current prime minister and candidate in the May 14 election, Prayuth Chan-ocha.
Challenges for ASEAN (AP) Alarm over Myanmar’s still-unfolding deadly civil strife, including an armed attack on an aid convoy, and China’s aggressive actions in the disputed South China Sea are expected to challenge Southeast Asian leaders’ commitments to non-interference and consensus decision-making as they meet in Indonesia this week. Top diplomats of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations convened Tuesday in the resort town of Labuan Bajo to finalize the agenda ahead of the two-day summit of the 10-nation bloc’s heads of state. Founded during the Cold War in 1967, ASEAN has avoided getting entangled in major-power competition as a bloc. But its diverse members are often involved in partnerships and disputes with superpowers. They range from authoritarian Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar, which are closely aligned with Beijing, to liberal democracies like the Philippines, which is Washington’s oldest treaty ally in Asia and recently allowed an expansion of American military presence in the country, to China’s outrage.
As more women forgo the hijab, Iran’s government pushes back (AP) Billboards across Iran’s capital proclaim that women should wear their mandatory headscarves to honor their mothers. But perhaps for the first time since the chaotic days following Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution, more women—both young and old—choose not to do so. Such open defiance comes after months of protests over the September death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in the custody of the country’s morality police, for wearing her hijab too loosely. While the demonstrations appear to have cooled, the choice by some women not to cover their hair in public poses a new challenge to the country’s theocracy. The women’s pushback also lays bare schisms in Iran that had been veiled for decades. Authorities have made legal threats and closed down some businesses serving women not wearing the hijab. Police and volunteers issue verbal warnings in subways, airports and other public places. Text messages have targeted drivers who had women without head covering in their vehicles. Some women said they’ve had enough—no matter the consequence. They say they are fighting for more freedom in Iran and a better future for their daughters.
Israeli-Palestinian fighting intensifies (AP) Palestinian militants fired hundreds of rockets from the Gaza Strip into Israel on Wednesday, while Israel pressed ahead with a series of airstrikes that have killed 21 Palestinians, including three senior militants and at least 10 civilians. A state-run Egyptian TV station announced that Egypt, a frequent mediator between the sides, had brokered a cease-fire. But the truce efforts appeared to falter as fighting intensified late Wednesday, with neither side showing any sign of backing down. It was the heaviest fighting between the sides in months, pushing the region closer toward a full-blown war. But in signs that both sides were trying to show restraint, Israel avoided attacks on the ruling Hamas militant group, targeting only the smaller and more militant Islamic Jihad faction. Hamas, meanwhile, appeared to remain on the sidelines.
Battles shake Sudan's capital as power struggle escalates (Reuters) Fighting in Sudan's capital escalated on Wednesday with fierce clashes and air strikes, witnesses said, as delegations of rival military factions continued talks in Saudi Arabia aimed at securing a ceasefire and humanitarian relief. Residents reported ground battles in several neighbourhoods of Khartoum between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), as well as heavy gunfire in the north of Omdurman and the east of Bahri, two adjacent cities separated from Khartoum by the River Nile. The conflict has created a humanitarian crisis in Africa's third largest nation by area, displacing more than 700,000 people inside the country and prompting 150,000 to flee to neighbouring states.
Lost woman survives 5 days in the wild on a bottle of wine (Washington Post) A woman has survived five days stranded without water in the Australian wilderness, resorting to drinking the only liquid refreshment she had on her: a bottle of wine. Lillian Ip had set out on a vacation to Bright, at the base of the Victorian Alps. But when the 48-year-old failed to check in with relatives on April 30, local police said her family raised the alarm. Rescue authorities scoured the remote, hilly terrain around 270 miles northeast of the Victorian state capital, Melbourne, for days. Her car was finally spotted at the end of a dirt road by a police helicopter Friday. Ip doesn’t drink, but she told police she had a bottle of wine in her car that was intended as a gift for her mother. “That got her through,” Wodonga Police Station Sgt. Martin Torpey said in a statement. “She used great common sense to stay with her car and not wander off into bushland, which assisted in police being able to find her.”

🍎, 🍍, 🥭, 🍌
🍎 :    how stable is my muse’s mental health?  have they been diagnosed with any mental illnesses and  /  or conditions?  do they have any undiagnosed mental illnesses and  /  or conditions?  do they or should they attend therapy?
Despite her tendency to want to avoid negative things altogether, her mental health is usually pretty stable. She's learned to cope with her traumas in her own ways, even if a lot of these tactics tend to involve avoidance. Valerie suffers from undiagnosed PTSD and has triggers that she hasn't fully unpacked yet surrounding power imbalances (definitely not a fantasy of hers, makes her feel sick to her stomach even if she's not directly involved) and physical intimacy (is not outright repulsed by it, but tends to be very slow to trust people enough for those kinds of interactions). Girl could definitely use therapy, but she's just not there yet.
🍍 :    how comfortable is my muse in their body?  how do they feel about their height,  weight,  strength,  and body type?  how important is being attractive to them?
Currently, Val is pretty comfortable in her body. However, she did go through a period of insecurity concerning her weight during her acting career. Coming into her teens, her abuser would weaponize her changing figure and the fact that she was filling out as a way to manipulate her into seeking his approval. This caused Valerie to develop unhealthy eating habits in an attempt to stay small, thinking that she had to resort to these tactics to keep her career alive. She's since healed from that mindset, though, more accepting of her natural figure in present day. Valerie isn't too concerned with appearing attractive to others (as evident by the odd way she dresses), but she does like feeling confident in her own skin.
🥭 :    how important to my muse is their hometown,  or where they’re from?  are they proud of it,  or considered a hometown hero?
She's very proud to be a country gal from West Virginia, and now that she's broken away from the world of vocal coaches and agents tailoring the way she presents herself, she's a lot more comfortable letting her childhood twang slip into her speech.
🍌  :    is my muse inclined to help others,  or will they only do it when it benefits them,  if at all?  what makes them this way?  has it ever gotten them into trouble,  or inconvenienced them?
Oh, absolutely—helping people is one of her favorite things! She doesn't need anything in return, Val just loves feeling like she's helped to lighten someone's load, even if its in the smallest of ways. She's occasionally giving to a fault, but she doesn't let that spoil her outlook or desire to help others when they really need it.

How Reiki and Life Coaching Can Help You Discover The Best Version Of Yourself
Virginia Beach, VA - In today’s fast-paced life, burnout is prevalent. Many people find themselves unmotivated, lost, and looking for meaning. If you have found yourself feeling empty and questioning your purpose and goals, it might be time to look into energy healing with the help of a Reiki master with experience in life coaching. How to find your passion:
Sometimes when we find ourselves unable to find motivation it is because we are stuck in a cycle of doing things, we are not passionate about. Therefore, knowing your passion is so important in going about our daily lives because it inspires us to find purpose.
Here are a few ways to identify your passion:
Create a list of your interests. What do you catch yourself reading the most about? What topics do you get most excited about discussing with others? Putting this down in writing is a great first step
Next, ask those around you what they think lights you up the most. It is easy to overlook our most obvious interests and characteristics so asking around can help us gain some insight.
Lastly, ask yourself what makes you happy? Chances are if you like exploring your city you are likely passionate about travel.
As always keep an open mind. Finding your passion takes time so be patient with yourself and make sure you have and try to have a positive perspective.
Allowing yourself to make mistakes:
Everyone makes mistakes but not everyone understands the value of forgiving yourself when you do. I always tell my clients to try new difficult things because it’ll force them to make mistakes. By getting things wrong you gain new skills and can grow in ways that you wouldn’t otherwise be able to. Here are some tips to help give permission to yourself to make mistakes:
When you begin something new and unfamiliar, recognize that it will take you some time to get the hang of it. Identify what you are unsure of and figure out a way to move forward from there.
Ask for help. Sometimes we can prevent mistakes simply by reaching out before it happens. Asking for help does not mean you are any less capable, rather it shows you are brave enough to seek out assistance.
Don’t worry about comparing yourself to others' abilities. Instead, think about how you did better than you did the day before. We are never going to be great at everything and it is important to remember this when we slip up.
Truly you can’t go wrong with making mistakes, the worst that can happen is to become memorable.
How to overcome procrastination:
While many students are in the midst of finals season, I wanted to share some helpful tips on how to overcome procrastination. To begin, you must be organized and prioritize what it is you wish to accomplish. Break your tasks down into manageable pieces and focus on accomplishing them one at a time. When you are struggling with procrastination it is often because you are thinking about all there is to do. Instead, focus on moving forward rather than on how difficult it will be.
On a deeper level, our mind postpones or puts off things because it is trying to protect us from feeling something unpleasant. For example, students often avoid homework because they think it is going to be difficult or boring. Being driven by this fear of not feeling good is what is preventing us from overcoming procrastination. My last tip for getting over procrastination is to ask yourself “why are you putting it off.” Listing out your reasons will help you develop more awareness about why and help you be less fearful or anxious about getting the job done.
How to identify your priorities and stick to them:
The other day I posted about how to overcome procrastination and briefly mentioned that it is important to identify your priorities and stick to them. But as always this is easier said than done. I always tell my clients to first distinguish between what needs more attention vs less. Then I ask them how would you like to spend more time/how would you like to spend less time? What is most important to you right now? And lastly, if you could do anything right now without any limitations what would it be?
Asking yourself these questions and then picking out what stands the most out to you will help you narrow down all that you feel you must accomplish. Pick one thing from that list that you have identified as the most important and finish it first.
This exercise can greatly help you find your priorities and feel a little less overwhelmed.

How Pets Help Manage Depression
Tumblr media
Avigayil Brown has been an animal lover her whole life. “I grew up having a lot of pets: dogs, cats, bunnies, fish, birds, and a horse,” says Brown, who’s 24 and lives in Brooklyn, NY.
She has dealt with depression since she was 12, but it wasn’t until she faced a very tough round of symptoms that she began to understand how pets helped her feel well.
When Brown moved into her own apartment, she was depressed and had trouble sleeping. After she adopted two rescue kittens, she started sleeping better — and feeling better, too.
“When I was lying in my bed, my cats would come and snuggle with me. If I got out of bed just to go to the bathroom, my cats followed me. It was very calming,” she says.
Brown isn’t alone. In a recent survey by the Human-Animal Bond Research Institute, 74% of pet owners said having a pet improved their mental health.
Studies back this up and show that activities with animals help with symptoms of depression.
WHAT PETS CAN OFFER IF YOU’RE DEPRESSED
Comfort, companionship, and love. If depression makes you feel lonely, pets can break the cycle.
“A pet can remind you that you’re not alone,” says Desiree Wiercyski, a life coach in Fort Wayne, IN. “Pets offer unconditional love, which can be extraordinarily soothing when feeling isolated.”
Wiercyski, who also lives with depression, says her dog helps her shake off feelings of worthlessness. “My pup has been right beside me offering comfort and love, reminding me that things aren’t so bad.”
Brown believes there’s something special about the love and attention her pets give her. “Animals are very connected in ways that people aren’t,” she says.
Clinical psychologist Perpetua Neo, PhD, agrees. “Animals pick up on when their owners are distressed,” she says. When they sense you’re not feeling well, they offer comfort.
A regular schedule. Knowing you have to feed, walk, or care for your pet may give you a sense of purpose and routine.
“Even when I don’t feel like getting out of bed or leaving the house, I know they’re depending on me,” says 29-year-old Courtney Sparkman, who lives in Tulsa, OK, and has two miniature poodles. “It helps me make it through the day.”A sense of calm. Pets have a relaxing effect. Petting or stroking an animal can improve your mood. “Touch helps increase oxytocin levels and reduces cortisol, the infamous stress-related hormone,” Wiercyski says. Even the sound of a cat purring can be soothing.
Studies with therapy dogs suggest even brief interactions ease anxiety and fear, says Sandra Barker, a professor of psychiatry and director of the Center for Human-Animal Interaction at Virginia Commonwealth University. In a recent survey, people with severe depression felt more relaxed, less lonely, and had less pain after short visits with a therapy dog.
Physical activity. Pet owners tend to get more exercise than people without pets. If you have a dog, for example, you’re more likely to go out for walks. Exercise is good for managing depression.
Wiercyski says depression often keeps her indoors. But knowing her dog needs to go out gets her out the door. “Even just those couple minutes outside raises my mood and makes me feel like I’m capable of something productive,” she says.Social time. Depression might make you want to avoid other people, but pets can open up your world.
Studies suggest pets help you get to know people, spark friendships, and build your support network. “Dogs and babies are the things that connect strangers together. When you walk your dog, you might feel inclined to speak to complete strangers,” Neo says. That’s a good thing. “Social connection is an antidote to depression.”
