Self Care - A Spiritual Story
Now this is a juicy subject to share. Self-care is a cornerstone of living our best life, and yet we are all learning how to live by placing ourselves first on the list of what matters most to us. There are so many stories of how we’ve had to learn techniques to take care of ourselves better, and so let’s turn the tables and illustrate someone who is doing a great job of this.
Jen was a pretty, little petite child, who learned early on that she gained positive attention from others, simply because of her appearance. She was aware of it from a very young age, and helped by conscious parents, to be just as strong on the inside as well as the outer appearance. She was encouraged to learn to play an instrument, in her case the guitar, and to practice singing because it granted her joy, with the freedom of expression. She learned some other languages, so that when her family traveled with her, she could speak a little with the people in their own language.
She was creative and learned new creativity throughout her growing years and all the way through adulthood. She loved taking care of herself and grew into a confident, beautiful woman. She completed an education, thoroughly enjoying and appreciating the fact that grown humans were slinging interesting information her way every day. She realized how fortunate she was to live in a world filled with opportunity, and experienced the honor of that great good fortune in all areas of her life.
She expected life to be fabulous and took great good care of herself to be in a solid place to enjoy every precious moment. Many individuals around her had extremely different perspectives. There were some people who saw life as a challenge, had not invested in themselves or anyone else. Jen didn’t understand this viewpoint, and although she had compassion for it, she wanted to be helpful by simply sharing what was truly beautiful about life. She loved often and intentionally emptying the contents of her bowl of life, to make room for something even better. Anyone around her wanted to create something better for themselves because of who she was. Jen was so good at self -care that she naturally taught it to others, simply by being in her company.

Emotional Pain in the Joints
Emotional pain in the joints. Let us talk about pain.  Sometimes, a new client will arrive for a Reiki session to help them relax or counteract the toll that anxiety has on their body, mind, and soul. As part of my intake procedure, I ask many questions to refine their emotional imbalance need down to a core issue. Emotional pain can often relate to a body part.
-Fear is in the knees, -decision-making is in the ankles, -ego pressure shows up in the elbows, -spine is about support, -the neck is usually about the will, -shoulders are about carrying burdens.
Let's say that a person comes in with a chronic back issue.  After a bit of conversation, it turns out that they are also in a relationship where they feel unsupported- materially, emotionally, financially or any other definition of support.  No matter how many chiropractic treatments, massages, or physical therapy, the pain always returns.   During this conversation, I usually tune into many different layers relating to the pain they are looking to release.  This level of detail is incredibly important because the treatment always fits the cause.  A physical cause will heal through a physical means.  Emotional pain in joints is always treatable in an emotional way.  As the conversation continues, the treatment unfolds.
As a child, we have the crying mechanism to recover from all types of pain.  This natural release is not always necessary as an adult.  Don't get me wrong.  Crying happens when certain issues and memories flood into focus.  I use modalities that are appropriate for each case such as Active Memory Technique from BodyTalk, yogic breathing techniques, and Ho'oponopono from Hawaiian Kahuna practice. The particular therapy seems not to be as important as the fact that the mind and the heart have done something in the direction of healing.  I like to call this a "permission slip" to quote one of my favorite gurus.  Emotional people cry, intellectuals need to talk and reason, and kinesthetic people usually need a hug.  We are all a combination of these personality types.
The emotional heart can heal and forgive almost anything if it is relied upon to function as a release mechanism. No matter what we have experienced, the heart will keep on beating.

Calling all body positive ppl
Does anybody have recs for fat & body positive creators I can follow. Especially about movement and intuitive eating.
But also just seeing other fat people doing hobbies and being visible on the internet would be nice. I like gaming, books, the usual nerd package.
I’m having so much trouble searching for these sorts of creators without getting suggested fatphobic or pro-ED content instead which is very upsetting :(
Even if you don’t have answers please reblog so I can find people who do!!

there's so much about the way the medical field operates that i hate, from medical school to actual medical practice. so much of it just encourages these passionless, soulless practitioners who never had their hearts set on helping people in the first place and that translates in their work and affects real human lives

Hello. So I'm having a battle inside of my brain. I've been following you for a while now, and I'm also in recovery for anorexia and bulimia. I'm also a newly graduated medical doctor. This means I know a lot about the human body. Which is exactly my point now. I try so, so hard to eat 'intuitively', listen to my body, and be okay with gaining weight, and I try to be in body positive and fat acceptance spaces (1/2, I will continue in next question)
(2/2), but I also know and I have seen with my two eyes, and treated with my own hands, the consequences of not eating healthy or being at an unhealthy body weight. I live in fear that If I eat and eat because I'm trying to recover, I'm gonna have the opposite health problems. I bring it up to my psychiatrist and psychologist, and they tell me there is no unhealthy food. But there is. And I just don't know how I should go with my recovery like this. Any advice for this? thank you for this blog
So I had to take a bit of time to think about the best way to articulate answers for you, because there are some complex and often competing needs addressed on my blog. I think it's important that you get an answer to your question, but I wanted to be careful to go about it in a way that wouldn't cause harm to anyone else. So I'm going to make my best effort, and putting it under a cut because it will be long and some who are triggered by medical views on fatness may prefer not to read on.
First of all, I'm so sorry to hear that you're struggling with this. Having a battle in your brain, as you say, sounds like an agonizing way to live. I hope that you are able to work through it.
Now, as you may know if you frequent this blog, eating disorders are complex and varied. Bodies and their workings are complex and varied. Some people do experience a variety of health conditions that are influenced by what they eat, so for these individuals, they may be best served by making choices accordingly. These choices can also be incredibly complex in this world - you may have seen a recent ask I recieved, for example, about somebody whose husband was just diagnosed with diabetes. The asker was stressed about learning to prepare foods for them both in accordance with his strict diabetes-friendly diet would trigger their restrictive tendencies from their eating disorder. So as you can see, the dietary choices that might be in his best interest might not be in the best interest of the asker. But them being married, I'm sure they would like to share meals together, so following a diet that suits them both is complicated. Difficult choices will have to be made at every juncture.
Gluten is not inherently bad or evil. Unless you have Celiac disease, in which case gluten is actually going to kill you slowly. You need to monitor your salt if you have high blood pressure, but if you've been diagnosed with POTS, you may actually need more salt, and lots of it. I myself will occasionally snack on chips, but never Funyuns. There's nothing inherently wrong with them, but they were invariably a trigger food for me to binge, so I stopped bringing them into my house. But this doesn't make them an unacceptable snack choice for everybody else.
Do you see where I'm going with this? Different people are experiencing different circumstances, and may need different things. Just because a food is particularly bad for one person doesn't make it a "bad food" unilaterally. Even the kinds of foods we consider "junk foods" can be tolerated by our bodies in moderation - well, most of our bodies, anyway. Now there are some people who have eating disorders like ARFID, where they literally cannot eat most foods and must veeery gradually expand their palate. For these individuals, we say "no food is bad food" because, while you might not like to see a person living on, say, saltine crackers or potato chips alone, they will literally starve without it, and so eating the food they can eat is preferable. For these individuals, that sleeve of saltine crackers can be a lifeline. Or take anyone who has a complex gastrointestinal disorder. Ask anyone with Chrohn's about their gut and its complicated relationship with fruits and veggies, a staple segment of the food pyramid touted by most doctors for its immense health benefits. Eating what you can will keep you alive and as healthy as possible in cases like these.
Now, there are people who are impacted in complex ways by the kinds of foods I'm guessing you're describing - things like chips, candy, fried food, processed/instant food. So in this case, do keep in mind that when an individual has a diet consisting largely of these types of foods, there are often complex genetic, epigenetic, and socioeconomic factors that are influencing the way their bodies naturally work and the way their dietary patterns have been established. I do understand how easy it is, at first glance, to just point at their diet and assume that it's easy and sustainable to change it, or that it would be a fix-all. But those same factors that contribute to the development of those complex health issues are often ongoing into the life of the affected individual, not to mention financial and social complications that may make it difficult to change things. But again, just because you've identified a certain food as detrimental to a patient's specific needs doesn't mean it's the same in regards to your own body's needs. Especially if these foods cause a trigger reaction for you to restrict or become obsessed with food "purity."
Now I know that in your work you say that you've treated with your own two hands the results of eating unhealthy foods. But I want you to get honest with yourself here, because you're not mentioning the experiences of the doctors who have treated and seen the damages of restrictive eating disorders. Both anorexia and bulimia, when sufficiently progressed, can cause lasting damage to the body even years into recovery. And they can also cause death. Surely a bag of chips or a cookie every now and again can't be more unhealthy than that? I'm hoping that you can take the time to periodically remind yourself of this, and to remind yourself that your own bodily needs are your own, and that paying attention to what YOUR body needs is self-care.
I know it's hard for an eating-disordered mind to listen to logic, but I'm truly hoping that you can overcome this for your own sake as well as for the sake of your patients. Anon, medical fatphobia has a long history of damaging patients. I know this because I myself have seen it happen. I've told the story before of my friend who was raised by hippies, fed all-organic snacks and kale chips, never allowed a hydrogenated oil, and was still fat growing up. I watched this person reduced to eating saltines and a few bites of apple per day when they were suffering with gallstones. It was all they could eat, but because they were fat, doctors assumed that their gastrointestinal distress must be caused by an excess of fatty foods in their diet. They lived on apple slices and saltines for months, still suffering pain all that time, before they were correctly diagnosed. Can you imagine what it did to their body, to live on such a restricted diet for such an extended period of time? This was not the only time a missed diagnosis threatened their health because all doctors saw was the fat. This person also starved themselves for a few years after being taught to do so at fat camp, and their anorexic behaviors were never called out because even though they did lose weight, they never ended up "skinny" at their lowest weight. But that starving certainly couldn't have been better for them than just living fat - their vision was blacking out every time they stood up! Anon, I hope you don't mind if I speak to you honestly about this. It's hard to gain a full honest medical history from every patient and patient family member you come across, because healthcare is a complicated field. But you cannot let your fear of fatness dictate the way you hear and see your patients. Yes, even if they're not following their prescribed diet. Yes, even if food is a contributing factor in their particular case. (And do keep in mind that a patient's refusal to change diet may come from a place of complicated factors, financial, social, emotional, you name it. Compassion will get you farther with them than judgment, and may even help you get a fuller story.) But do it for yourself, too. And listen to your body. If a food makes your body FEEL well and nourished, then it wasn't a bad food. And you deserve to be well fed and embark on your own healing journey. I hope you find the self-worth to believe that.
Because honestly, food deprivation affects your metabolism. You may experience the notorious anorexia recovery hunger as your appetite reemerges, and you will need to give your body what it needs in order to develop a pattern of being healed in both body and mind. You can keep nutritious options around for that, but I think you may need to keep working on your fear of "snack foods." Your metabolism may be changed as well, and so yes, you may gain back more weight than you had envisioned, or your body shape may be different than you had expected for a little while. Sometimes the weight distribution is a little weird during that regaining phase, and that's okay and does not determine your worth. You are going through a medical event and deserve to be compassionate with your body and soul as that happens. In fact, that is the only way you can heal your mind. Because, even before you look to your patients and the ideal steps for their specific health needs, you need to prioritize yourself and look to your own individual needs. So to recap, periodically use these reminders.
"Just because a food is bad for that other person doesn't make it a bad food. My dietary needs are my own."
"There's no food unhealthier than an eating disorder."
"I will look inward at what my own eating behaviors have done to my health, rather than ruminating on that patient's eating behaviors."
"I'd rather gain weight than hurt my body again."
"My thinness does not reflect my worth."
Feel free to add on as you progress in your recovery journey. Best of luck, in that and in your career. It's certainly not an easy one. Do your best, be open to learning, and remind your eating disorder that your therapists are right even if it doesn't want to listen to logic. I hope that when you are able to bring yourself to eat your next treat, you enjoy it thoroughly.

So... I fucked up
I went to the doctors and he said i likely had lupus. i got blood work done and he was sure about it. i asked to be referred out to a rheumologist, for a second opinion before doctor #1 didn't think I needed medication.
she... didnt think i had lupus. she ran her own tests and came back and said it wasnt lupus. that it would probably never be lupus. to stop worrying about it, when people have lupus, they will know.
it doesnt matter that damn near every afab and some amab people on my mom's side has lupus. she said i had a positive ana because of the autoimmune diseaes that run in the family and losing weight would help the inflammation and cardiac risk (which was very very high).
so... i started tracking again. it lasted a week and a half. it only took that long before i was panicking about what to eat, crying in the car while eating lunch. it made me feel fucking terrible. i let the fatphobia in the medical field almost cause me to relapse. hell, it might even be considered a relapse. i dunno. but i know better.
and when i was looking up the causes of inflammation in the body, weight can have some relation to it, but you know else does? depression, anxiety, trauma, ptsd, and other shit like that. things that i have had since i was 8 years old. and tracking my calories is going to cause me way more stress and mental health issues than it would help with whatever i wanted to change.
so i will focus on health promoting habits, which i already knew is better. eating more fruit and veggies, is good. getting more movement, is good. getting more and better sleep, is good. managing my stress, is good. tracking my calories and freaking out and rocking back and forth because i ate something i "shouldnt have" is NOT going to help my wellbeing. at all.
I am happy i have a good therapist and an amazing husband that i can talk about all this stuff with. i was sending him the food log at the end of the day to prevent myself from restricting. i just wanted to track where i was at and what changed i could make. 2 days ago i told him that i had cake and i felt horrible. we got cake because at work we won an award and they got cake for everyone. my husband asked if it was that the cake didnt make me feel good, or if eddy was trying to fuck shit up lol. i told him i didnt know but i didnt think tracking was helping. he was understanding but also was worried it was my ed trying to be lke "oh dont track, just dont eat." next day i told him now i was feeling during lunch and he agreed it isnt best for me and i needed all the snuggles and cuddles and wanted to make me feel better.
he is amazing. he doesnt know anything about tracking and it was me who wanted to share it with him to make sure that i wasnt relapsing. it honeslty helped. part of the ed is hiding and lying about shit, so when my ed wants me to hide stuff, i tend to tell my husband because i know its the first step to a relapse.
i am not back at square one, but i am working on getting back to feeling more like myself.
fuck medical fatphobia.

My ADD Medication Journey - Dec 30, 2023
Forgot to post this yesterday because I was wrapped up in a personal project.
12/30/2023 – Saturday
Had another somewhat unsatisfying night's sleep
Combination of noise from outside and mind kind of refusing to stop processing
Nothing intrusive or unpleasant, things like "I should do this and this and this tomorrow"
Decided to lounge in bed later than usual to offset
Morning does taken at 10 am
Lazy day, relaxed to recoup from a very busy week
Didn't notice any serious uptick in tremors
Appetite was suppressed but managed to remember to eat around 2pm or so
Purchased some computer equipment to finally tackle a project I've been waiting on
Spent the evening working on this project—learning curve
Ate dinner around 6:30 – 7 pm
Stayed up later than I should have trying to get past the learning curve on the project

I don't think you guys get how scientifically some "witchcraft" MUST be taken or else you can face serious side effects (I am specifically talking about things that deal with herbs, minerals, or other chemical components, especially when they are meant to be ingested, applied to the skin, or inhaled).
Like, I'm locally known for my tea witchcraft, which anyone who has looked into it might more accurately call herbology or a mix of folk knowledge and biochemistry. I stay as up to date as I can on the research, and for things that there isn't enough research for at the moment but have been used for a certain ailment for centuries, I meticulously document every use, the exact procedure and recipe, and any reported effects whether they on the surface seem relevant or not.
I'm reminded of this because of the covid that has been passing around the household, and all the remedies I've been making for one symptom or another, conscious of everyone's health issues and medication. My dad says, "thank you for taking care of everyone, Hal." and I say, "no problem! :)" queue me returning downstairs for almost an hour of washing chemistry equipment.
On tumblr on the rare occasions I share any herb-based stuff I learn, it's all pretty mild. I avoid potent shit that you really need to be careful with. But note that when you get really into it, you start to realize that a lot of the more effective stuff is toxic in larger doses. Because it's like medicine. It's chemically based and it has a potent, significant effect on the human body. You can't take too much. Now, I don't mess around with that stuff irl either unless I am 100% certain of what I'm doing and the situation calls for that level. I also forage for most of my herbs/mushrooms/mosses/etc, and sometimes, the stuff I have access to is the stuff you've got to be careful with.
Did you know that foxglove is great for treating congestive heart failure and atrial fibrillation? It's used to make a prescription drug called digoxin for that specific purpose. It's also really fucking toxic, far too much to mess with it at home. More dangerously, the information on the benefits of foxglove is just a google search away! I chose a really obvious example for this, but if you just fill an infuser with any given plant that's supposed to help with [issue] and steep it, no carefully determined dilutions, temperatures (for either the denaturing of certain proteins or preventing the release of certain chemicals) and very specific steep times (mostly to prevent the release of too high of dosage toxic chemicals) you might find yourself in the emergency room or in the ground. Best case just sick for a few days. Or you might happen to be right and feel so much better!
But the point is, you've got to take this stuff seriously if your resident witch/herbologist/homeopathic healer is, and if they're not, avoid participation or do a shit ton of research on your own to make sure it's safe first. If you're doing it on your own, research, record results carefully, ask questions of those who know more, and be prepared to stop any herbal treatment you start. Don't be arrogant.
(I kid you not, my brother is banned from the tea shelves since one time (for context he has tachycardia) he made himself a strong infusion of yerba mate as a study aid, which he knew to do because I make it for myself as a study aid (not now that I'm on adderall) and for those of you who don't know, it's a stimulant thanks to frankly insane amounts of caffeine *when made traditionally* (more than coffee, which my brother is not allowed to have thanks to his tachycardia). Needless to say this ended in an ER trip. (He was ultimately okay, don't worry).)
#oh it's just some herbs!#i'm very sick of people treating herbology like it's just silly beliefs that be can be taken very lightly#like yeah sure. did you check if they interfere with your medication? did you check dosage?#were you super careful to dilute it properly and steep it at the right temperature?#no?#well no shit you're experiencing side effects dumbass#just culturally#none of you take this seriously and spreading that mentality that people should just experiment with this stuff#only some of you push the reality that you have to be careful#it's not silly and any responsible herbologist will do research#please be one of the people who does research and does NOT spread the idea that it's all#'uwu witchy herb correspondences i know cause i saw a list of medicinal herbs for virgos with chronic pain on tumblr'#'measurements? i trust my intuition baybee <3'#sure that's fine with sage and garlic and peppermint and shit#but please#if you have not heard of an herb before in the context of normal culinary use#do NOT order a package of it online or look for it in your woods and then steep yourself a cup of it with no research#eventually that will bite you in the ass#I see a concerning amount of people spreading the idea that anything folk-knowledge based should AUTOMATICALLY NOT BE TREATED SERIOUSLY#wrong reaction#no you shouldn't use it as your sole treatment for a serious ailment#and no you shouldn't accept everything uncritically#but don't treat it lightly as if 'it's all fake anyways lol'#i'm gonna fucking murder someone#and i know the mushrooms to do it with#'oh what's in this' 'just some magical ingredients uwu' *it has amanita and you die in several days after an unassuming stomach ache*#i'm sorry this turned into a rant#genuinely meant to just type a short witty thing on it but that didn't happen#it also turned into a#long post
