Beaches (1988). A privileged rich debutante and a cynical struggling entertainer share a turbulent, but strong childhood friendship over the years.
Movies about female friendships, my beloved! Movies about WOMEN, my beloved!!! This is a pretty special film, even if it wears its melodrama badge as proudly as wears it's Bette Midler showcase vehicle badge. It's funny, heartfelt, full of great music and some compelling performances, particularly from Barbara Hershey. Just - - so great. 8/10.

This is a review of the 2015 movie, ‘Jenny’s Wedding,’ written and directed by Mary Agnes Donoghue.
I could not finish this movie. Perhaps something totally fantastic happens at the end. I don’t think there is much that could change my opinion.
Parts of this movie were hilarious- and not only because it centres on yet another of Katherine Heigl’s desperate but ill-fortuned attempts at a traditional marriage. Some of the family dynamics had me laughing away exactly as intended. This movie leans into the ridiculous antics that bring most of the entertainment value.
The titular Jenny is a reasonably good lead, if a very conventional one. She is the Prince Charming of her own story. Her long-term partner is scarcely a character, and the same is true for her most interesting family member, her astute but hands-off brother, Michael.
Every other family member gets a mildly interesting opening, only to be given an incredibly icky second life half-way through the movie. The worst offender being Anne, who had an awful tangential storyline that reeked of padding and brought nothing but fanatical metaphors to the table.
This is a character-driven movie, but Jenny’s life is strangely empty. She seems to simultaneously live on top of her parents and a good trip away, she has a gaggle of friends but none who ever turn up, she is reportedly close with her family but barely makes an effort to keep them in her life. Jenny is not supposed to be the most interesting element of this movie, but there is barely anything in the mixing pot but the one point plot and recycled characters.
For an unimaginative premise, the movie had an engaging opening but quickly ran out of steam. Think of all the interesting directions this could have gone! There are infinite ways to inject drama that add to the narrative instead of undermining any hints of a richer, more interesting story.
I really did find this movie amusing. There are a lot of moments where it’s easy to cheer or laugh, depending on how deeply you’ve bought the into sappy ultimatums. It’s not wrong to love this movie exactly as is, but it may exhaust your stamina to struggle through the tedium and cliches.
Also, I completely adore Grace Gummer. Not sure why.
It’s that kind of movie. I don’t hate it, but it’s more fun if you don’t take it seriously. Otherwise, I recommend checking high hopes at the door and preparing a palate cleanser to wash out the saccharine blandness.

This is the first monograph on the Californian pop artist in more than thirty years, with a representative selection of works from 1957 to 2014. Billy Al Bengston is the very personification of the cheerful, carefree attitude towards life in California—in both his work and his personal life. After studying at the California College of Arts and Crafts and the Otis Art Institute, he exhibited at the legendary Ferus Gallery in 1957 and was the central figure among a group of artists that included Frank Gehry, Edward Kienholz, Ed Ruscha, and Ken Price. BAB, as he apostrophizes himself, inserts car and motorcycle parts as motifs into his otherwise abstract paintings. He uses lacquer and spray paint instead of oil and aluminum panels with dented surfaces instead of the traditional canvas. Art and lifestyle combine to create the individual “Bengston iconography” of California Cool.
