A meaning about the alliteration in Vicious/Vengeful I haven’t seen anyone talk about is how Victor Vale and Marcella Morgan are born with their alliterating names but Eli Ever is a fake name for Eli Cardale.

Something something, Eli not choosing his ruthless nature until he dies and looses his soul while Victor and Marcella were always kind of like that.

overall I think it’s fine to not like Marcella(you cannot be expected to like every fictional character ever, and she obviously is nowhere near a perfect person; far from it) but if you hate her because she took up space in a book the author has stated is specifically about women reclaiming power and you wanted to see more of your homoerotic serial killer boys then you should reevaluate your fucking biases <3

When I was rereading Vengeful I spent a lot of time thinking about how all that symbolism and meaning and power in comic book ass alliterative names in Vicious. Continues with Marcella?

Marcus likes how powerful Marcella makes him feel. Likes having her there as support, a trophy wife, but not more than that. But Marcella's already got that power in her name.

As she comes into herself and goes full supervillain she return to being Marcella Morgan, right up there with Victor Vale and Eli Ever. The alliteration symbolizes power and importance, and she's finally making something of herself, finally using the power that she was always meant to have. In the fleshback to Eli and Victor's first meeting, we even get a callback to the alliteration idea.

It's just. It's a very on-the-nose piece of symbolism. The books don't shy away from that; they look at it, talk about it, embrace it. But it goes even deeper than that; it's woven into the story in much subtler ways. And I think it's really cool.

AKA the scene where Eli hugs someone to death.

Possibly an unpopular opinion, but Vengeful was absolutely Eli’s book; the other characters all have interesting arcs in their own way, but it’s Eli’s characterization in Vengeful that has always stuck out to me because he is by far at his scariest in the sequel.

He spends the whole book doing what he’s good at- tracking EOs, obsessing over Victor and his own religious beliefs in equal measure, and healing endlessly- just like in Vicious, but the difference here is that we get to see him without the mask (or with a very thin veneer of one). And without it, he is just as smart, relentless, and brutal as he was before, but he’s also desperate. A lot of people talk about Eli’s narcissism, but something I don’t see mentioned as much is his desperation, especially in Vengeful. In Vicious, he has assurance that his power means he doesn’t need to fear living, but in Vengeful, he learns otherwise, and it rocks his whole belief system so hard that his mask shatters into itty bitty pieces, and everyone gets to see the same monster Victor was always looking for.

And desperate, no-mask Eli is completely, utterly horrifying, because he’s both terrified and terrifying. It’s a fascinating reading experience.

The fight with Marcella is also amazing. It really feels like a cathartic break for the two, with Marcella getting to ruin someone who stole her moment and Eli finally getting to sink back into his very morbid comfort zone. Each little micro-confrontation leading up to this final one is so visceral, and then it caps off with a hug of all things that is still really, really brutal. Eli smiling as his body erodes while Marcella stands her ground, both snapping little one-liners at each other as the building falls apart around them... One of my favorite scenes in the series tbh.

OK, now that all that book rambling is over, here’s a semi-rendered fake screenshot for this scene since I wanted to draw something for it. I’ve been listening to the audiobooks recently, and while I prefer the original narrator for Victor scenes (they’re still good, don’t get me wrong, but a little less theatric then they were before), the new narrator does a really good job of giving Eli this arrogant, sickeningly-smooth voice. Here’s the result; it’s purposefully sketchy since I was mostly concentrating on colors and composition here. Trying to figure out how to illustrate these two in a way that showed the damage without showing... well, everything else was a little tricky, but I think this works. I don’t think Eli’s face was described as wicking away, but I always envisioned him almost nuzzling into her shoulder at one point to get rid of the collar and everything else is getting eroded, so I drew it getting messed up too. Trying to figure out how to draw it and the burning hair was also difficult, but I wasn’t going to look up reference images for it, so this is what I came up with.

So yeah. Worst hug ever.

What's a book/series people most associate with you?

I asked this question in my stories a while ago. There were quite a few answers, but the one standout was Vicious. It's one of the first Schwab books I ever read (This Savage Song was the first), and I instantly fell in love with Victor and his little cohort of misfits.

I did a reread of Vengeful this month, and while it's not my favorite of the two, I still enjoyed it. We get a lot more of Eli's backstory. I can't decide if he's autistic or a psychopath. Arguments could be made for both, but I didn't see the autism slant the first time I read it. Anyone else have thoughts?

Not included is volume 1 of the ExtraOrdinary comics. I really hope we get more eventually. I'm also looking forward to Victorious whenever it comes out. Very curious as to how the story is going to continue.

how am i ever meant to be normal about June when she doesn't even get a last name. There is so much importance placed on last names in Vicious. Victor VALE. Eli EVER, Marcella MORGANS. Sydney and Serena CLARKE. They're telling of who they were in the past, who they are now and how they'll be remembered. But June doesn't have one. It's just June. It's just June who has to live by others identities.
