Putin pals in peril.

Since the start of Russian president Vlad Putin's ill-considered attempt to conquer Ukraine, there's been a rash of mysterious deaths among his oligarch cronies (some pictured above along with the means of their demise). Between the pointless war losses and the sanctions imposed by the West that are slowly strangling the economy, it's not a stretch to imagine these ultra-wealthy businessmen turning against the Russian leader. And Putin, the ex-KBG officer, exacting his revenge.

Prominent among the war's critics has been Ravel Maganov, chairman of the giant Russian oil company, Lukoil. By a strange coincidence, Maganov was reported to have fallen out of a sixth-floor window at Moscow's Central Clinic Hospital earlier this month. And he wasn't the only high-level Russian businessman to expire under puzzling circumstances, either.

The day after Putin ordered troops into Ukraine in February, the body of Alexander Tyulakov, a senior executive at Gazprom, the natural gas monopoly, was discovered with a suicide note nearby. The next month, Russian businessman Vasily Melnikov was found stabbed to death, along with his wife and sons.

In April, Sergei Protosenya, another Kremlin-linked gas tycoon, was found hanged at his Spanish residence. His wife and daughter were found dead in their beds from stab wounds. The next day, Vladislav Avayev, former vice-president at Gazprombank, was found shot dead in his Moscow penthouse. And in July, Yuri Voronov, CEO of Astra-Shipping, was found dead from gunshot wounds to the head and with a pistol next to the body.

The late Comrade Maganov wasn't the only casualty of gravity. In May, Andrei Krukovsky, another Gazprom manager, fell of a cliff in Sochi. Dan Rapoport, a Latvian-born Russian businessman and outspoken Putin critic, fell from his Washington, DC apartment in August. And only last week, the point man for developing the vast Russian-held resources in the Arctic, Ivan Pechorin, somehow managed to fall off his private yacht. Pechorin's body washed up 100 miles from Vladivostok.

Even though a few of Putin's billionaire buddies are turning their ill-gotten rubles into cryptocurrency, the sanctions are causing them all to become squeezed financially. And no doubt some are using their Kremlin connections to lobby against the war. But, as the online news source TheStreet points out, anyone familiar with Putin "would likely know immediately that interfering with his ambitions could backfire." Perhaps lethally.

If all this reminds you of The Godfather where Michael Corleone coldly eliminates anyone he considers disloyal — even those closest to him — remember that Russia is basically a crime syndicate. With Putin as mob boss.

I’ve been having issues with my posts disappearing from the tags so I’m going to give reposting this a try

It was funny at first. You didn’t really think anything of it the first time … or the second … or the third.

When you landed your dream job straight out of college and traded in the familiar streets of your hometown for the glitz and glam of Monaco, you didn’t know what to expect. But the reality ended up being more than you could have dreamed of.

You had a crooked cobblestone and poorly closed latte to thank for that. One wrong step saw you flung across the sidewalk. Fortunately, someone managed to catch you before your head became the street’s next victim. Unfortunately, his white linen shirt also caught the remnants of your coffee.

That’s how you met Charles Leclerc. Who needs a meet cute when you could have a “I’m mortified and can’t ever show my face in the second-smallest sovereign state in the world again” cute?

Of course you didn’t exactly know who he was at first but the gigantic billboard of his face next to the Prancing Horse that you passed on the way to your first date clued you in pretty quickly.

As you became more serious, you never intended to keep your relationship secret. But it was the off-season and that meant that Charles could mostly stay out of the spotlight while the two of you relished in your own little bubble. The honeymoon phase never felt sweeter.

But then your coworkers started asking questions. They saw the Ferrari (and the other Ferrari and the other Ferrari and the other Ferrari) that often dropped you off in the mornings and picked you up at night. They saw how you started to rush out for your lunch break instead of spending it in the office. They saw the new earrings and bracelets and necklaces and shoes and lots and lots of red accents.

“Who is he?”

You turn towards your coworker, Stephanie, as you go to refill your water bottle after lunch. “Who is who?”

She wiggles an eyebrow, “Your new man!”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

Your other coworker, Jacob, walks over from across the room. “Don’t be coy. We have eyes.”

Stephanie laughs, “And my eyes are telling me that you’ve found yourself a trust fund kid. No judgement here — get that bag!”

“One,” your raise a finger, “he’s not a trust fund kid. And two,” you raise another, “it’s not about money. I really like him.”

Stephanie squeals with as much zeal as she can manage in a corporate office, “I knew it! You have a man.”

Jacob chimes in, “So trust fund kid’s out … I’m betting on an oligarch.”

“Or a torrid affair with a politician.” Stephanie seems way too excited at the prospect.

You roll your eyes good-naturedly, “He does something much more dangerous.”

“He’s in the mafia?”

“Damn, you’ve got yourself a mobster.”

You don’t grace them with a reply, just laughing the teasing away.

You should have just straight up denied it. You knew that. But you were having too much fun and what harm could a little joke possibly have? You just didn’t expect the photos you posted on Instagram from when you joined Charles in Maranello and then explored northern Italy together to have your work friends quite so suspicious.

Stephanie and Jacob corner you as soon as you step out of the elevator on your first day back from vacation.

Stephanie starts, “So Italy …”

“Where the mafia is from. What a coincidence!” Jacob finishes.

“Wait,” Stephanie focuses on your neck, “that’s a new necklace.” She spots the patent red bottoms of your new more fashion than function stilettos, “and those are new shoes!”

“We were in Milan!” You explained. “You can’t not go shopping in Milan.”

“Yeah,” Jacob laughs, “you and your mafioso sugar daddy.”

To be fair, the phone call they overheard between you and Charles the next day didn’t help much.

“Did you manage to get the blood out?”

He sighed through the phone, “Yes, finally! Only took me two hours of scrubbing. Remind me not to scratch my leg on a cliff and not notice while it bleeds on my car’s leather the next time we go to the beach.”

Your back turned to them, you don’t even notice the wide eyed look that Stephanie and Jacob exchange.

When your birthday approached right before the season started up, you finally decided to introduce Charles to your friends. Your family, the Leclercs, and your friends would be joining you for dinner at your favorite local restaurant.

Charles was standing next to you, welcoming your guests and inviting them to sit down for dinner, when Stephanie and Jacob walked in.

You think they would’ve looked less shocked if Charles was actually in the mafia.

Jacob stutters, “You’re … you’re-”

“CHARLES LECLERC!” Stephanie managed to find her voice.

Charles extended a hand and chuckled, “Hope I don’t disappoint. Y/N told me you thought I was in the mafia. I’m not quite at that level.”

Your best friends from work turned the same color as Charles’ race suit.

so when Palestine fights back by killing civilians, including children, you go: it's justified

but when Russia invades Ukraine and kills civilians, including children, and Ukraine fights back in defense, you go, Ukraine should settle for peace

and you say Israel can just stop the occupation, they have that power and then they could avoid their civilians dying by simply deciding to that, yet you don't see that the Ukraine war stop just as "easily", by Russia stopping the invasion. They invaded, they started the war, just like Israel occupied Palestine, they are the one who can stop it

I know these are two different situations but I cant help but notice how different your approaches are, like adjusting your theory according to who is attacking who.

also, you said it would be strategically impossible (im paraphrasing you) for Russia to stop their invasion, well, wouldn't it also be strategically impossible for Israel to stop their occupation.

Also, if Ukraine settle for peace (I want them to, I generally agree with your points on the topic) and Russia gains something from it (as their peace treaty will most definitely assign a lot of Ukraine land to Russia), then Russia gets the message that invading other countries is successful and a good way to go about things. I mean, obviously the peace work will begin after they settle for peace, preferably working with Russia, im just curious to hear your thoughts.

volodymyr zelensky might have something to say about this comparison. obviously to be clear his comparison is fucking ridiculous, but is illustrative of a key difference--that all of the force of NATO are arrayed behind ukraine (a privilege not enjoyed by palestine) and that the government of ukraine is aligned with NATO rather than its own people--which is why it's selling everything that's not nailed down to the predatory west.

i do of course think that russia should stop the invasion! i respond flippantly to most people asking this because they rarely ask in good faith, but let me say it unequivocally--i'm a communist, i think that the fall of the soviet union was a tragedy and the oligarchic mafia state that rose from its ashes is an insult to everything it stood for. putin is a far-right anticommunist and the oligarchs that he represents are scum. in the case of russia vs. ukraine, russia is straightforwardly the agressor and it would be a good thing if russia withdrew immediately.

but when i talk about the need for a peace settlement, i'm not (no matter how much nationalists and the NATO fandom will yell that i am) advocating for an unconditional ukrainian surrender. i'm talking about the maximalist positions about 'punishing russia' and ensuring some imaginary total defeat that the NATO bloc advocate for and push the ukrainian position towards. the US and their allies have made no secret of they fact that they seek to prolong the war, use it as an opportunity to open ukraine up to US investors, and don't care about ukrainian casualties:

& ultimately, there is the fact that i (and almost all my followers) live in the imperial core--as communists there is nothing any of us can do to push russia towards peace. that's a task for the russian communist and peace movements. what we can do, however, is obstruct and protest NATO's involvement in the war. this is what the union of ukrainian communists have said in their statement on the war:

We appeal to the Russian workers as a fraternal class, bearing all the burdens of war on its shoulders, also suffering from impoverishment, unemployment, and the elimination of fundamental rights and freedoms: seek the defeat of the bourgeois power in Russia, turn your weapons against the Russian oligarchs and their political acolytes. We are ready to fight with you to turn the imperialist war into a class war against the power of capital and for the communist revolution. We appeal to the workers of the countries belonging to NATO: To stop the threat of the destruction of humankind in the nuclear clash of imperialist war is only possible in a struggle not for abstract peace, but for the overthrow of the power of the bourgeoisie of their countries, who are waging these wars and profiting from them. Work for the defeat of the bourgeois governments and the NATO bloc in this war, put forward the task of turning the war between nations into a war between classes, turn the weapons produced by workers' hands not against the workers of other countries, but against the capitalists of your own countries, against their power.

so--people in the west are powerless to do anything to prevent or weaken russian imperialism, short of supporting their own imperialist powers--which, if you care at all about human life or the working class, is robbing peter to pay paul. however, those same bourgeois western governments are the ones supporting the israeli genocide--this is a case in which the Western proletariat can and should mobilize to suppress the imperialism and colonialism of the aggressor, because they live in countries that directly support it.

of course, there are also massive differences in the actual circumstances of the relations between russia and ukraine--russia is not, for example, built on stolen ukrainian land, nor is ukraine an open-air concentration camp whose water and electricity are provided by russia only sparingly, nor has ukraine seen in peacetime regular brutal massacre, invasion, bombing, and murder as palestine does every single year of so-called 'peace' that passes between israel and palestine. the situation of 'peace' between russia and ukraine before 2022 was not one of totally intolerable one-sided massacre, as the situation of 'peace' between israel and palestine has been.

as such, there are in fact multiple parties who can pursue peace in ukraine, including parties that we, communists in the West--who are the people i blog as and for--can pressure and organize against effectively. there is only one party that can pursue peace in israel. the situation is not comparable, either on its face or in the relation the West and as a result communists in the West have to it.

I figured as much when it was widely reported he has no bank accounts that can be found. That said right there he was dirty. Only mafia and drug kingpins do that ish. I'm sure others do it but people getting legit $$$$ hardly would ever go to the trouble of conducting all their business in cash.

Johnson’s received at least three checks, each for $6100, from the company. The campaign says he returned the money after he was exposed. But he's still racking up favors for Russians. -Voted against the 2022 Ukraine Supplemental Appropriation. -Voted for Amendment 22 to HR 2670 which would have prohibited all security assistance for Ukraine.

okay so i see my last post is getting likes and reblogs and my sleep deprivation delulu is just strong enough to start writing some more smart insights

for context, the following parties got into parliament

smer-ssd (direction - slovak social democracy) - the pro russian oligarch mafia racists; 23%

PS (progressive slovakia) - the progressive, eco friendly, pro-west party; 18%

hlas-sd (voice/vote - social democracy) - former members of smer, slightly less unhinged, a bit more pro west, their leader has been caught being based once when telling ppl to deal with some important issues instead of making gender transitioning illegal, but otherwise they are liars and corrupt; 15%

oľano+za ľudí+kú (ordinary people&independent individuals+for the people+christian union) - led by an unhinged attention seeker, conservatives trying to limit abortions and queer rights; 9%

kdh (christian democratic movement) - christian democrats but also homophobic and pro forced birth; 7%

sas (liberty and solidarity) - libertarian party with a leader who should not be the leader; 6%

sns (slovak national party); 6%

(the percentages aren’t exact, i was rounding up and down depending on appropriateness)

the parties have to form a coalition. oľano has afaik already said they want to be in the opposition and smer will be the ones who will try to form a coalition first because they won.

ps, sas and kdh do NOT want to be in coalition with smer. sns does but just sns isn’t enough for a majority. therefore smer needs to recruit hlas.

however, hlas might not want to do that, despite most members being originally from smer. it depends, honestly - on what smer will offer them

ps is very adamant on not letting smer to be in the coalition. apparently ps and sas would go together into a coalition if ps managed to convince hlas. kdh would also go with them if they negotiated with ps about stuff like human rights (as i said, kdh is homophobic, ps isn’t).

basically, hlas can now decide what’s gonna happen. and it’s likely gonna be impacted by what will hlas be offered by the parties. which i don’t really like because i can’t guess what they’ll do. hlas is a bit unpredictable to me.

well. let’s hope for the best and prepare for the worst or something?

The North

The North is cold, harsh, and human settlements are often isolated from each other. Perpetually dim save for dawn and dusk thanks to the Upper Continent, sharp mountains, harsh winters, and richly colored plants mark the environment. Rumateurs — llama-like beasts with big noses — graze across the moors, seals lay on the ice cold beaches and turn to humans, and beasts that crawl from the Abyss eat human minds. In the East, Demons — shunned by all other races — live in their blood-soaked, feral hivemind. Across the North, it is generally accepted that you look after your own, as there is little room for generosity. Even if there was, it would do neither of you very good; one must learn to survive on one’s own.

The North has officially surrendered in the face of the Philosopher King's power. The Noble Houses are soon to be stripped off their titles and a new government is set to rise—but who will truly hold power in this new world?

Nouveau Thuille

Nouveau Thuille is an isolated city-state with a mafia-like government of oligarchs who claim to reign in the stead of their Once and Future Emperor. Their Gothic architecture fends off year-round snows and industrialization fills the air with Ysse and smoke. While corruption and murder is just the status quo, Nouveau Thuilleans will set it all aside if anyone else tries to tell them otherwise.

The Saegen Folk

The Saegen Folk make up the rest of the North -- a diverse group of sailors and warlord families. Their culture is filled with song, from cooking and cleaning folk tunes to Sage-sung ballads at religion ceremonies. But even shieldsiblings drill to the rhythm of drums. Loyalty to family is matched by few other cultures in Yssaia.

Since Arlasaire is from Nouveau Thuille and ALSO since it's the setting of my Assassin Life Sim about Murder and Self-Care, it's a lot more developed on an individual level than some of the other cultures.

Like, I can tell you the details of their music and the history of their theatre and their frozen foods and that their coffee isn't actually coffee from coffee beans but ground from dried mushrooms...

I can tell you which families have power and what they control and produce and what their signature art forms are. I can tell you their family drama from the last ten years -- like how Giluniques was courting Lucienne, even though his father called off the marriage because HER father tried to murder everyone.

I can tell you about how Claudia d'Magnia started hallucinating and no one new how to help her and died tragically.

I can tell you about how Einharde d'Magnia picked up a bunch of disabled orphans and turned them into his personal assassins.

I can tell you what the crests and family words of every house is...

when national mourning is proclaimed for a media mogul, oligarch, supporter of various nato wars, leader of the party who heralded neofascist parties back into the public sphere and the man who colluded with the mafia in many instances, that's when you can feel that there is a really clear class divide between yourself and the entire parliamentary arc, because there was no national mourning for any of the innumerable victims of silvio berlusconi's politics: immigrants, iraqi people, mafia victims, people who got cut down by the liberalization of essential services, people who got thrown out of their homes or hate crimed. the only thing we should be mourning is that the old fart didn't kick the bucket sooner.

Another day, another Russian war crime.

President Zelensky has condemned a "deliberate" attack on Ukraine's "peaceful" city of Kostyantynivka. At least 16 people, including a child, were killed in the blast, which took place on a busy market street in the middle of the day - a rarity. Kostyantynivka, in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region, is near the front line. Videos on social media show a bright orange explosion at the far end of a street where people were out shopping. Russia is yet to comment on the attack. Mr Zelensky, who has blamed Moscow, said those killed were "people who did nothing wrong" - and warned the death toll could increase. Dealing with Russia, he said, meant turning a blind eye to the audacity of evil. At least 28 people are thought to be injured. A market, shops and a pharmacy are all reported to have been hit. Police and rescue services are on the scene, still looking for survivors. It seems to be the worst attack of its kind for several months.

You can tell when Putin feels he's losing ground on the battlefield by how many Ukrainian civilians he tries to kill.

US Sec. of State Antony Blinken made an unannounced trip to Kyiv today to reaffirm American support for Ukraine.

i had a dream long time ago, as an entity who wasnt me for the whole duration but rather some dude, i don't remember the details, only thing i remember is that i sat down to watch a movie with friends for 3 hours. russian film. doesnt exist obviously but i write to maybe realise the story some day. white color dominates with black and red giving secondary hints. very artistic. main roles are femme fatale jewelier mafia woman (played by me [not me as in daftie but me as in some actress who looks like i look]) called gina who is selling very rare jewels to bad oligarchs and evildoers and literal rich israeli pedophiles (it's shown obviously that these people in theory have no business buying jewelry i dont remember but shes a chemist too but theyre not drugs but maybe related to them. that vibe). and this literal nobody fucking uni student gets in her crosshairs (played by Dima Lysenkov). theres this iconic scene that when i woke up i remembered first: she puts this metal tube pistol that shoots a big thin metal needle to his head and he pleads for life and she puts it to his crotch and he goes "you know what id rather you shoot there but can you shoot in such an angle that it goes through my rectum and doesnt grace anything else and just shoots my dick off clean because i looked it up and such an angle exists" and then he awkwardly stops talking and she just puts it over his stomach and hes like "uhhh i probably would survive that you can do that too" and she asks "so you wouldnt mind living dickess?" and he answers ofc not life has so much more. and she takes a liking to him. basically the movie is about her doing the deals and fixing some missunderstanding from which everyone in the end dies and also psychologically and psychosexually torturing her unifag boytoy thats moralising everything and seething at the evil he was plunged into suddenly. and eventually she grooms him to give his life for her and presses a gun that was fake to fool baddies but he didnt know that so he was shooting to kill and its all symbolic. corruption etc. it was really suspenseful in the movie i'm not doing it justice. but in the end same thing happens but they get impaled on some metal spike but its not fatal for him. and he survives and police arrives and he grieves but in the end he finds out that she had clones in a lab and merely one clone died. a la altered carbon. cliffhanger
