The Seattle Thunderbirds have Luke Prokop, the only openly gay hockey player in pro or semi-pro hockey right now, but they chose not to hold a Pride Night this year. So fans said fine, we’ll hold our own.

Luke promoted it on Instagram but because it was unofficial, I didn’t expect anything from the players.

Except.

Every. Single. Player used Pride tape in some way for warmups. ALL OF THEM, stepping up in a way grown-ass men are afraid to do.

Several of them kept the tape on either their stick or socks for the entire game, including their goalie, Thomas Milic (who grinned at my kids shaking a huge Pride flag at him and flashed them a peace sign)

i know this ask is a few weeks old, but it did prompt me to put some thought into the particulars of the CW teen small town supernatural drama that is the seattle thunderbirds. here’s how i think it would shape up…

reid schaefer and dylan guenther are well established in their own separate high school spheres. reid’s a football player. not the all-american quarterback kind, though. more like a linebacker, the kind that hits hard and you give him wide berth when you see him in the lunchroom.

dylan’s a bad kid. wrong side of the tracks, bad crowd of friends, even though sometimes teachers tell him he’s too smart for all that. he and reid have an uneasy kind of peace. they don’t really like each other but they each respect that the other one’s hot shit in his own sphere. sometimes reid buys weed from dylan.

brad lambert’s the new kid in town. goes out for football and turns out to be the best kicker anyone’s ever seen. quiet kid though. keeps to himself, despite the best efforts of quarterback/captain lucas ciona to make him feel like part of the team.

somehow reid and dylan witness something fucked up and supernatural, and they don’t know what to do about it. do they tell someone? should they do something? if they pretend it never happened will it just go away, or will everything get even more fucked up?

it’s possible this happens behind the 7-eleven, during a little cash transaction. the oblivious clerk at the 7-eleven is kyle crnkovic, who graduated last year and is working this dead end job and going to community college. he’s seen some stuff on the night shift. he’s probably seen some supernatural shit but he doesn’t even realize it because the night shift at 7-E is already weird enough.

reid and dylan endure a week of simmering tension. hostile whispered conversations. narrow-eyed stares when they pass each other in the hallway. then reid notices something that makes him think brad lambert might be involved in [supernatural thing]. he pulls dylan into an empty classroom after school to tell him about it and it turns into another fight about whether they should try to do something or leave it alone.

just as voices are escalating and it seems not only possible but likely that somebody’s going to get punched, jeremy hanzel pokes his head out of the back room, where he’s been quietly working on some sort of project. he’s the kind of kid who’d usually steer clear of reid’s ominous high school meathead aura. but he couldn’t help but overhear them, and hey, are you guys talking about [supernatural thing]? because [insert information that jeremy hanzel knows about supernatural thing because he’s a sharp kid in his own overlooked way].

soon the three of them are in reid’s pickup, with jeremy directing them to an abandoned house on the outskirts of town where there are signs of [supernatural thing]. there’s a tense moment when they hear noises coming from another part of the house. who’s there? ghosts? [supernatural thing]? other kids up to no good? actually it turns out to be brad lambert.

i have no idea what the supernatural thing is, but the important part is that while they’re all investigating/combatting it, reid and dylan are each intrigued by brad lambert, and they each notice and are not pleased that the other one is intrigued by brad lambert. but brad’s really just the catalyst to set off reid and dylan’s enemies to lovers arc. or, more specifically, mutual suspicion to reluctant comrades to fervent comrades to frantically making out during an illicit kegger in the woods by the old railroad arch. something fucked up and supernatural happens while reid’s got dylan pressed up against the crumbling brick, and that sets the relationship arc back a little. also at some point in all of this reid derisively calls dylan “spicy dyl,” as is canon.

here are some other characters in this fic:

—colton dach is reid’s sidekick/best friend. he’s a defensive end on the football team. he recognizes that reid’s keeping secrets from him and getting closer to dylan and he doesn’t like it.

—kevin korchinski is a cornerback of course. comic relief, gets along with everybody. helps bridge the gap between jeremy hanzel and reid/dylan (they need jeremy’s knowledge about [supernatural thing] but he’s kinda scared of them!)

—nico myatovic, gracyn sawchyn, and sawyer mynio are twerpy little sophomores on the soccer team. they are important to the plot somehow.

—luke prokop is a first-year teacher and assistant coach who is trying very hard to establish a professional reputation and have good boundaries but also he thinks these kids have stumbled onto something with [supernatural thing] and he’s ready to support them when his colleagues dismiss their concerns.

Happy Halloween! If your characters had to pick costumes to wear on Halloween, who or what would they be?

Ciaran: He’s going as a skeleton with a sweater and sweatpants that have bones on them and Hope painted his face.

Hope: Matching skeleton with makeup but her outfit is a skin tight morph suit kind of thing, and she’s got Ciona dressed up with makeup too.

Red: As herself but on fire.

Dimitri: A firefighter for Red, but only so much as he’s wearing a hat.

Rayne: She’s wearing a traditional looking Greek-esque robe and has explained that this was the traditional dress in her home land for the occasion.

Lucas: His rookie uniform from years ago, he’s very impressed that it still fits.

Thaine: A theif, a burgler, to poke fun at Jacks. He looks like the hamburgler.

Jacks: They decked out as a “demon” what they’re supposed to look like with horns and the like and incredible makeup and they didn’t tell anyone and everyone is so so impressed.

Gallo: He’s dressed in a similar Greek-esque robe as Rayne and has olive leaves in his hair.

Suma: She’s rocking her traditional Eqyptian dress and looks very much like Cleopatra, but she’s letting her cat features show a bit so she looks like Sekhmet too.

Chayne: Sweet boy is dressed as Baron Semedi.

Than: Ever so fittingly, he’s going as Death, but it’s just a “hello my name is Death,” name tag.

Ama: A vampire, she’s leaning into it. She’s letting her fangs show and is consistently reminding everyone that she’s not a vampire, she’s a Lamia.

Bindy: Medusa, leaning into the snake theme, and letting her eyes go reptile.

Ursa: A witch of course, but she’s doning the entire spread. Hat, broom, striped socks. Luna, her cat, is following her around. She looks like a witch for sure but is doing it in a wonderfully, creepy cute kind of way.

Maithe: With an extreme about of prodding from Ursa, he’s going as a Werewolf, so he constantly points out that he shifts into a bear. But the mask is a scary wolf.

Wade: A recent fan of the book, he’s going as Frankenstein, but a very well done, not cheesy at all Frankenstein.

Miyu: Very proud of her mate, she’s going as the Bride of Frankenstein.

Original Fic Fest Intro

@originalficfest My intro for this crazy awesome idea. The second and third days may be a bit hard because I’ll be enjoying my wedding anniversary weekend but I’ll do my best!

About Me: 

You can call me Rachel. I’m 31, bisexual, a cisfemale, and I’ve been writing since kindergarten. I primarily focus on fantasy, urban fantasy, paranormal romance, and some sci-fi. I have a degree in Professional Writing and Creative Writing and I am currently working as an editor. So, saying writing is my life is both accurate but also a huge understatement. I couldn’t escape if if I wanted to, which I don’t. I love to write. I have the my first novel of the NBC series, Affinity for Pain, up for free reading on inkitt.com and I am considering self-publishing it. If so, I definitely need a better cover. Any way, I’m excited to use this Fic Fest to get a bit more inspiration for book two of the series, Burn the Bone. 

About my WIP:

Burn the Bone focuses of Dimitri, best friend of Ciaran from the first book and a Drugha demon, and Red, former Inferno captive alongside Ciaran and Dimitri and fire daemon. They are both forced back into each other’s lives, after a painful separation because of Ciaran’s PTSD and mental issues as the result of the Inferno, when Red needs help to prove that she’s not guilty of a murder that NBCPD Detective Lucas Anderson is tracking her for. Dimitri and Red has grown to have feelings for each other and we never able to act on them. They’d both given up on love when they wind up face to face with each other after years apart. 

Together they learn that Roger van Stratton, a unknown but extremely powerful demon, has started Interim, a group that operates under the guise of a demon/human alliance but it is a scheme used by Roger to locate demons and kidnap them. The group doesn't know why Roger wants these demons. What they do know, is that he’s hired mercenaries and they attempt to get information out of them to learn more about what he is and what he wants. Unfortunately, some storm the house in an attempt to kidnap Ciona and instead leave with Red. 

Quick Notes about the Newborn City Universe: 

Newborn City: a newly formed city created after the Dawning where humans and demons live together in semi-harmony.  Newborn City is located in upstate New York.  It was built over the foundations of a small town called Endwell.  It was chosen because it was far enough away from New York City to escape the hype but also close enough for some of the clans with small children to successfully travel there.

Demon: a group of humanoid creatures that has existed as long as humans. They have evolved simultaneously with them. The term was created by humans out of a religious fear that connected their abilities with evil forces. They are not inherently evil but have the free will to go either way. There are many races of demons and there are some which consist of sexes and many which are asexual.

So. Picture this. You live in your universe and are all up and involved in all the excitement. Are you a demon or a human caught up in demon activity?

Hmm, honestly I’m Ursa. She’s a bit of a Mary Sue in the ways we’re similar but her past, and future, are waaay different than mine. I’d be a faithful customer of hers that stumbled in at the wrong time and then loved the craziness and chaos, so I never left. So a witch in this world which would mean not quite human but not a demon either. Ursa and I would cast spells and talk nerdy stuff and I’d go to Bindy whenever I had a bad day. I’d be the mom friend to Than and Dimitri. My daughter could play with Ciona, Hope and Ciaran’s daughter. There’d be an EMT on standby when ever I tripped and fell, again, and Suma could talk to be about Egypt, a passion of mine. I’d help Chayne cook and eat all the Cajun food. Red would begrudgingly warm my tea for me and Jacks would “get” me things and I’d have to ask if they stole them, which they would answer with a smile. I’d attempt to get Ama to relax but her anxiety and mine would be too strong so we’d end up crying to a movie. Wade and Miyu would teach me Japanese and I’d help Wade with his English. Miyu would geek out on books with me too. Rayne and I would sing loudly to our favorite songs and Lucas and Thaine would be concerned that I wasn’t concerned that Jacks stole me stuff. Thaine would shrug it off a bit more and Lucas would close his eyes and pretend he didn’t see it. The boys would play pool, and Hope would kick their asses. I’d happily watch the madness and then Roger would attack and I’d be fucked. Hopefully they would protect me, realizing that I’m useless and need to be saved.

Here are my thoughts from this article the Thunderbirds wrote unpacking some of the players' hype songs that nobody asked to hear:

Roddy "Yeehaw" Ross lives on ffs

Matt Rempe is the ONLY one I vibe with because we both have dad music taste and "Kashmir" would be my hype song too ngl. Owen Williams can stay too, "Back in Black" is a good choice, classic

Luke Bateman and Cade McNelly are emo but in opposite directions

(At least they're not country emos there are too many on this team)

Listen I love U2 and I get it, Lucas Ciona, I really do, but I can think of way more focus-ful(?) songs than "Beautiful Day"

Why did the writers give the detailed history of Led Zeppelin and U2??? Acting like their main fanbase isn't 45-50+ year-old white people???

Can't tell if Jeri-Leon and Williamson chose cheesy shit like "One Man Band" because they're romantics or because it makes them think of the Team™ anyway Keltie for captain

I think I'm old now because Mekai Sanders is probably the coolest kid on the team and sure enough I have no idea who that artist is
