Born Loretta Pleasants in Roanoke, Virginia Henrietta Lacks (August 1920-October 4, 1951) went to live with relatives in Clover, Virginia, after her mother died. In 1951, Henrietta Lacks was diagnosed with cervical cancer. While she was receiving treatment in a segregated ward at the Johns Hopkins University Hospital, researchers took a small piece from Lacks's tumor, without her knowledge, for research purposes.
While experimenting on the sample, scientists observed that Lacks's cells reproduced and thrived outside of her body, a result researchers had unsuccessfully attempted to secure for decades. Lacks died of cancer on October 4, 1951, and was buried in a family cemetery in Clover. The "immortal cells" from Lacks's body continued to grow, and researchers around the world began to conduct experiments with them. Today, billions of HeLa cells are in use in laboratories around the world.
This image is a photo courtesy of the Lacks family and was reprinted from the "Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" by Rebecca Skloot.

Context makes all the difference
Tumblr media
There are two basic kinds of choices in life – small stuff and life changers. Most of the time, whether a choice is small stuff or a life changer doesn’t have much to do with the actual choice itself. What we’re choosing to do, whether it’s hard or easy.
The difference between small stuff and life changers comes from where we are in life. Context makes all the difference.
Catching a life preserver that’s being thrown to you isn’t all that hard to do.
For someone treading water in a pond, a few feet from the shore, the choice to catch a life preserver is small stuff. It really doesn’t matter either way.
But for someone treading water in the ocean, with no land in sight, the choice to catch a life preserver is anything but small stuff.
Context makes all the difference. And it’s this dynamic that’s at the heart of today’s Gospel.
Loving someone who already loves you unconditionally isn’t all that hard to do.
What today’s Gospel makes clear is the context of that choice when it comes to Jesus. And for you and me, the stakes couldn’t be higher.
Our context? On our own, we’re separated from God. Not because we’ve done anything bad. That’s just our default state of existence in this fallen world. That’s where we start from.
The long-term consequences of doing nothing about our separation from God are horrifying to contemplate. Both in this life and in eternity.
The One who is the most upset about this? Is the One that made us. God loves us too much to abandon us.
Which is the whole point of the divine search and rescue mission that is the Incarnation.
That’s the backstory of today’s Gospel, John 3:16.
God isn’t asking us to do something that’s all that hard to do – to love Someone who already loves us unconditionally. Someone is willing to pay the ultimate price just for the chance that we would love Him back (see Good Friday for details).
But for you and me, given our context, the stakes couldn’t be higher.

“It's not what I asked for… Sometimes life just slips in through a back door, And carves out a person, And makes you believe it's all true - And now I've got you.
And you're not what I asked for. …If I'm honest I know I would give it all back, For a chance to start over, And rewrite an ending or two…
For the girl that I knew : Who’d be reckless just enough. Who can hurt, but Who learns how to toughen up, when she's bruised, And gets used - by a man who can't love. And then she'll get stuck and be scared,
Of the life that's inside her; Growing stronger each day - 'Til it finally reminds her - To fight just a little, To bring back the fire in her eyes. … That's been gone, but it used to be mine …” - She Used To Be Mine by Sara Bareilles

Our Words Matter
Our words matter, but does the word, floccinaucinihilipilification, one of the longest words in the dictionary, really matter? I can’t say that I’ll ever use it in a talk, but it sure did bring me inspiration for today’s blog. It came up randomly in a pop-up advertisement and intrigued me enough to look up its origin. Back in the 18th Century, Eton College had a grammar book which listed a set…

LETTER TO MY DAUGHTER
Dear Daughter,
This letter has taken an extraordinary time getting itself together. I have all along known that I wanted to tell you directly of some lessons I have learned and under what conditions I have learned them.
My life has been long, and believing that life loves the liver of it, I have dared to try many things, sometimes trembling, but daring, still. I have only included here events and lessons which I have found useful. I have not told how I have used the solutions, knowing that you are intelligent and creative and resourceful and you will use them as you see fit.
You will find in this book accounts of growing up, unexpected emergencies, a few poems, some light stories to make you laugh and some to make you meditate.
There have been people in my life who meant me well, taught me valuable lessons, and others who have meant me ill and, have given me ample notification that my world is not meant to be all peaches and cream.
I have made many mistakes and no doubt will make more before I die. When I have seen pain, when I have found that my ineptness has caused displeasure, I have learned to accept my responsibility and to forgive myself first, then to apologize to anyone injured by my misreckoning. Since I cannot un-live history, and repentance is all I can offer God, I have hopes that my sincere apologies were accepted.
You may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them. Try to be a rainbow in someone’s cloud. Do not complain. Make every effort to change things you do not like. If you cannot make a change, change the way you have been thinking. You might find a new solution.
Never whine. Whining lets a brute know that a victim is in the neighborhood.
Be certain that you do not die without having done something wonderful for humanity.
I gave birth to one child, a son, but I have thousands of daughters. You are Black and White, Jewish and Muslim, Asian, Spanish-speaking, Native American and Aleut. You are fat and thin and pretty and plain, gay and straight, educated and unlettered, and I am speaking to you all. Here is my offering to you.
Chapter One:

I am by no means an expert on the subject at all, but if I could give one piece of advice to people who are job hunting, it is to always save a copy of the description of any job you apply for. It’s getting RIDICULOUS out there (at least in my experience/industry) in terms of how long between when a job gets posted and when they start contacting applicants for interviews, and unless you have a photographic memory, or the job is still active on the website you found it on, you will forget details about the job before you get invited to interview and it’s probably not a strong sign if you ask the interviewer what the heck the job is again (even if it’s fair given the elapsed time and how many applications people expect you to have going at once).
If it’s not already available in PDF format, just click the print option on your browser’s menu when you’re on the webpage with the job listing and when it gives you the window with the printer specifications, select “save as PDF” on the dropdown of available printers instead and save it to the same folder where you’re saving your cover letters/resumes/application materials with the name of the company/job title/date you applied in the file name. easy peasy. I still forget to do this occasionally but even remembering to do it half the time has saved me a lot of trouble overall.
job hunting sucks and is demoralizing on the best day, so keep your head up, do little things like this to make your life easier, and remember that I love you 💖 you got this!
