Why These Imperfect Korean ‘Moon Jars’ Sell for Millions
Old, round, imperfect and beautiful — that’s how fans of Korean art describe the moon jar, or “dalhangari.”
These unassuming, plain white pots have entranced everyone from rapper RM, of K-pop sensation BTS, to philosopher Alain de Botton.
The former director of London’s Victoria and Albert Museum, Beth McKillop, has called the moon jar an “icon of Korean identity.” And if price is any indicator of popularity, one recently sold for over $4.5 million at a Christie’s auction.
This month, a rare example from the late 17th or early 18th century will go on sale at Sotheby’s in New York, where it’s expected to fetch more than $3 million.
“A large moon jar has always been expensive, but I think the big uptick in prices and value is… because their appeal is now global,” said Angela McAteer, Sotheby’s international head of Chinese art for the Americas and Europe, over video call. “You’ve got an international cohort of bidders competing for them, so it’s gone beyond the traditional connoisseur collecting community of Korean art.”
Tumblr media
Huge price tags also result from the jars’ rarity. Although made for over a century in the royal kilns of Korea’s last kingdom, the Joseon dynasty, few are thought to exist today. Estimates for the number of larger ones (those more than 40 centimeters, or 15.7 inches, tall and wide) that have survived over the years range from 12 to 30.
Having passed through auction houses and antique dealers across the world, several of these are now in the collections of institutions like the British Museum and Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, as well as in the hands of private collectors.
‘Owning a piece of happiness’
The first moon jars were created in the royal kilns in Gwangju (a city just outside Seoul, not the larger southern city of the same name) from 1650 to 1750. They were made from pure white porcelain and kaolin clay, and, following the neo-Confucian fashions of their day, the pots reflected values such as propriety, humility, frugality and purity. They were likely used at court and in upper-class homes as containers for food and liquids, or as decorative vessels.
In the mid-20th century, moon jars began gaining international appreciation thanks to influential admirers such as Japanese folk crafts scholar Yanagi Soetsu and British potter Bernard Leach, who bought one from a Seoul antique store in 1935. Leach once said that having a moon jar was like “owning a piece of happiness,” and would later give his to fellow potter Lucie Rie for safekeeping during World War II. It stayed in her studio until her death and was later acquired by the British Museum.
Charlotte Horlyck, lecturer in Korean Art History at the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies, wrote in the Art Bulletin journal that after World War II the moon jar “caught the attention of an early generation of postcolonial Korean artists and scholars who sought to restore Korean art history and national identity,” as the pieces “resonated with the visual language of international modernism and minimalism of the mid-20th century while remaining a distinctly Korean work of art.”
The moon jar’s allure
When Sotheby’s announced its forthcoming sale, the auction house described its 44-centimeter (17.3-inch) moon jar as an object that inspired, astounded and soothed those who “stand in its presence.” It’s a funny thing to say about a pot, to speak as if it’s alive, but the jars’ visceral, emotional impact on people is something that comes up time and time again in the literature.
Tumblr media
Choi Sunu, a former director of the National Museum of Korea, has described the museum’s moon jars as being like companions, or muses that have inspired his writing and stirred his creativity. Bernard Leach admired the pots for their “natural unselfconsciousness.” In 2012, South Korea’s then-Unification Minister Yu Woo-ik used the pot as a metaphor symbolizing a reunified Korean peninsula (moon jars are created in two hemispherical pieces and joined in the middle).
More recently the rapper RM, of K-pop group BTS, posted a picture of himself hugging a modern-day moon jar on Twitter, telling fans that the pots made him feel calm.
“It’s hard for someone to really comprehend how a pot can make you feel that way,” said McAteer. “It has this real meditative presence. If you’ve sat in front of a great (painting by US artist, Mark) Rothko and you feel this kind of palpable energy emanate from it, and you could sit for hours and just feel something in its presence — the moon jar has that too.”
“The more you look at it, the more there is to see. It looks different from every angle,” she added. “We had real issues with the photography and the catalog because it looks like a different piece every time you rotate it, or you change the lighting. The surface is just alive, you know.”
“You can see how the glaze coalesces; you see these spontaneous bursts of this blush color that’s happening in the firing. You can lose yourself in its surface.”
Modern masters
Modern Korean potters have been inspired by the jars, and a number have come up with their own homages. Ceramist Kim Syyong covers his pots with a black glaze, while Yun Ju Cheol’s versions look spikier like a pufferfish and Choi Bo Ram’s unvarnished, textured blue vases have a denim-like quality.
Others, like Kwon Dae Sup, have looked to closely recreate the process used by the potters of yore. The 71-year-old ceramist produces unadorned white jars and allows for all the beautiful imperfections produced to shine through. He works out of a studio in Gwangju, where the royal kilns that produced moon jars were once located.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There’s a great deal of preparation that goes into making a moon jar traditionally. It’s labor-intensive: washing, sifting impurities from the clay, kneading and rolling it to remove air bubbles, carrying around these large hunks, not to mention hand throwing the clay itself to that oversized bowl shape without collapsing, and the work keeping a pine wood fire burning for 24 hours while the pot hardens in the kiln. Kwon also built his own kiln to replicate the old process as closely as possible.
“I do this because it’s fun,” he said in a phone interview. “Every time I make something, it’s novel … The quality of the material is different every time. The conditions in which I make the pots is new every time.”
Kwon said he also feels an emotional connection to the moon jar. As a student he was so moved by a one he saw in a Korean antique store that he decided they would be his life’s work. “They feel alive,” he said.
In a 2019 book on his work by Axel Vervoodt Gallery the potter is quoted saying he tries to produce art that needs no addition or subtraction. “I wish to create work that has an imposing presence but harmonizes with its surroundings regardless of where and when it is displayed. It should give peace of mind and a sense of comfort to all who look at it.”

coffee and art
Tumblr media
pairing: Namjoon x y/n
genre: fluff
---
“One cold brew coffee, please”, the man right in front of you mumbles. Wondering why he was wearing this thick face mask and a beanie while it’s so hot outside, you just nodded. “Here you go, we will call out this number when your order is ready”, you give him the receipt and he silently moves to the left. He looked suspicious but when you took the next order, you stopped paying attention to him. “Have you seen him?”, one girl in the line mumbled to her friend. “The one with the beanie? Yeah, isn’t that RM from BTS?”, the other girl immediately started recording him. You wanted to protest but also didn’t want to draw all the attention to him. After the girls identified RM, you also recognized him. More people started whispering and taking some pictures. ‘Do these guys go out without security? Wow, that’s savage’, you thought. Poor guy can’t go anywhere without being filmed and harassed. You like bts but not to the extend that you become star struck over their presence.
“Number 237, your coffee is ready”, you announced, only to see that it was the idol’s order. “Thank you”, he grabbed the coffee and a napkin. Then he turned around and scanned the area, probably looking for a quiet corner where he can read the book he was holding in peace. “Excuse me”, he turned around with a sigh looking at you, “Oh, don’t worry. I don’t want an autograph, or anything. It’s just I noticed you having a book with you, so I figured you’d like to read it in peace, without all these people starring at you”. The idol didn’t say anything, so you continued: “We have a break room with a sofa inside and everyone’s done with their break. It’s also really cozy. You can read and enjoy your coffee in there if you like”. Again he scanned the room, he looked tempted. “Is that really okay?”, you just smiled at him gesturing to follow you. “Won’t you get in trouble?”, both of you entered the break room. “Don’t worry, I’m the owner of this place”, you smiled at him. Then he took off his mask and beanie. Much to your surprise he looked absolutely breathtaking and hot even without all the whitewash filters and make up. “Thank you so much, I appreciate it”, he gave you his best dimpled smile, “I’m Namjoon. You are?”. “Y/n. I need to get back to work though, we are short on workers today. Enjoy your book”.
~~~
After an hour you decided to get your phone from the break room. “Oh, hey”, Namjoon looked up from his book. “Keep on reading, I just wanted to grab my phone, the busy hours are over”, you quickly stated and wanted to leave. You wanted to make sure that he can enjoy the quiet atmosphere in an unknown place. “Hold on, wait”, he half-yelled making you stop in your tracks, “I wanted to thank you again. It’s been a long time since I could focus on a book anywhere but my house”. “Really, it’s fine. I’m glad I could help you out. It must be annoying to never have any kind of privacy”, he eagerly nodded in response, “well, I’ll get going”. Again as you wanted to step outside he made you stop: “I have a question. Sorry for being so noisy. Who made this painting? The colours, the harmony, just everything is mesmerising”. “I made it”, you answered faintly.
You immediately blushed, never thought anyone as famous as Namjoon would say that about your painting. Your staff told you all the time that you’re an incredible artist but you knew they were just trying to be nice to their boss. “Wow, that’s impressive! When did you start to paint? Who’s your favourite artist? Did you take classes? Have you been at the Arario Gallery in Cheonan? I went there last week and it was mind blowing”, he kept rambling making you laugh out softly. Namjoon noticed instantly: “Ahh, sorry. I get so worked up over art”. “It’s fine. I mean, I have a lot of passion for art. You asked a lot of questions, so I literally have no idea where to start. Let us talk over a cup of coffee, I’ll be right back”.
~~~
The shop already closed down an hour ago. Both of you been so into the conversation that hours started to feel like minutes. “Woah, you met Kwon Dae Sup? And hugged one of the moon jars? I’m torn between feeling utterly happy for you and being absolutely jealous”, your eyes widen at the pictures he is showing you. “I wish we could go to any art gallery together. It’d be so much fun to discuss art with someone who really cares”, he sulked, “but you know, the fans would go crazy”. “Maybe on day”, you beamed at him trying to sound a bit positive. You probably won't see him again sadly.
Then another two hours passed. "Do you need to work again tomorrow? The cafe opens at 7am, right? And it’s already 1am”, Namjoon pointed out. “What? It’s already 1am? I’ll be dead tired”, you groan. “It’s totally my fault. I’m sorry”. “No! No, I mean it’s fine. I really appreciated the conversation. It’s not easy to find someone who’ll talk with you about art for like five hours straight”. “Good to know. So, would you like to meet up again next week? I have a day off on Tuesday”, he looks at you suggestively. Surprised about the fact that he wants to see you again, you nod: “Sure, I’d love to”. “Can we call it our second date then? Because today went really well”, he nervously scratched his back of the head. Your heart started beating faster and you surely turned red. “Yes”, you softly whispered. Namjoon didn’t need more words, he just gave you a big smile and took your hand: “Let’s get a cab, I’ll take you home”.

Korean artists Chung Chang-Sup and Kwon Dae-Sup, “Return” exhibition
"Return" reflects a shared attitude of the two artists who both embrace a traditional aesthetics and material and both combine them with contemporary concepts and issue.
Chung explained his persistent use of circular shapes in his early works as a research into the geometrically pure form. This research, for him, also has its roots in the Korean traditional symbols as the Taegeuk, the ying and yang and the halo of a Buddha sculptures.
Chung’s use of traditional formal languages, ideas on Korean beauty and inner Korean characters stand in a direct dialogue with the origins of the Kwon Dae-Sup's Moon jar. The Korean white porcelain was originally developed during the late 17th and produced throughout 18th century, the late period of the Choson Dynasty (1392-1910) and were considered as an epitome of the austere Confucian virtues of purity.
The process of developing the Moon Jar- as Kwon Dae-Sup explains – could not be accomplished without the help of nature. Nature is a key element in both artistic methodologies. In fact, as the art critic Yongwoo Lee writes: "Chung's work reflects his Taoist belief that the creative artist balances material and nature in a unified act of making". The commitment and dedication to an organicist working method by both artists can be considered as the red thread of the exhibition as the aesthetics of the white porcelain Moon jars are put in relation with the monochrome tak paintings.

RM’s Art Exhibition Trips Show Just How Much “CONNECT, BTS” Means To Him
Tumblr media
It’s only been a few days since BTS unveiled their new global art project, CONNECT, BTS, but fans already know how much it means to the members. During a video conference, Jin explained how the project would connect people through diversity, while Jungkook said it would highlight the similarities between artwork and music.
The project must mean a lot to RM too—after all, he’s constantly spotted attending art exhibitions just like the ones CONNECT, BTS will be showcasing. Let’s take a look at 5 times RM proved how deep his love for art is.
1. The National Gallery, London
The CONNECT, BTS series just began with an exhibit at the Serpentine Galleries in London—fitting for RM, who has visited art galleries in London before.
When BTS headed to London for their sold-out “Love Yourself: Speak Yourself“ shows at Wembley Stadium, RM made sure to find the time to visit the city’s famous National Gallery.
Fans in London spotted RM looking at a famous 1700s painting by Canaletto titled Venice: The Grand Canal with S. Simeone Piccolo, which uses perspective, light and detail to depict the beautiful architecture of the city.

2. Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City
RM often squeezes art trips into BTS’s overseas schedules. When the group flew to New York City to perform at the MetLife Stadium last May, RM uploaded photos of himself at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (also known as the Met).
He even included a cute pun in his tweet!

In his photos, RM can be seen viewing various classic art pieces, including Lane in the Poppy Fields by Claude Monet.
Seems like the Met was just as glad to meet him. After his visit, they posted a tweet thanking him for his visit in Korean.
방문해 주셔서 감사합니다!
— The Met (@metmuseum) May 17, 2019
3. Normal Life by Kim Hee Soo, Seoul
Alongside centuries-old paintings, RM is a fan of contemporary art too. Last September, he shared pictures of his visit to the Normal Life solo exhibition in Seoul, featuring artwork by modern painter Kim Hee Soo.
The artist paints ordinary people with no expression or personality so the viewer can imagine themselves in the painting. It must be a unique and fulfilling experience for RM, whose life is anything but ordinary!
On Instagram, Kim revealed that RM even came to meet him during his visit.

4. Bonte Museum, Jeju Island
What would an RM vacation be without an art trip? While on a break in Jeju, RM visited the Bonte Museum, which showcases traditional and modern Korean crafts.
One of the exhibitions he looked at was Infinity Mirrored Room – Gleaming Lights of the Souls by Yayoi Kusama.
This unusual installation, which has traveled the world, is a small 4×4 meter space with mirrored walls and ceilings. The viewer stands in a platform in the middle of the water pool floor while a hundred color-changing lights surround them.
5. Kwon Dae Sup, Gyeonggi
On one of his most recent art trips, Namjoon tweeted a photo of himself hugging a large “moon jar”—a traditional form of Korean pottery, also known as dalhangari.
These huge pots are even more impressive than they seem—each one uses at least 40kg of clay and is painstakingly made from two separate halves joined together. The artist, Kwon Dae Sup, originally intended to be a painter until he was struck by sudden inspiration when he came across  an antique moon jar.
Tumblr media

Perhaps RM couldn’t make it to the artist’s exhibition at the Park Ryu Sook Gallery earlier that month, as eagle-eyed fans noticed that their idol actually viewed the jars at Kwon’s own house near Paldang Lake, Gyeonggi.

Ce dernier a d’ailleurs une longue expérience derrière lui, ayant signé l’édition de nombreux métrages tels que “The City of Violence” (2006), “The Good, the Bad, the Weird” (2008), “I Saw the Devil” (2010), “No Tears for the Dead” (2014) ou encore “Jo Pil-ho: The Dawning Rage” (2019).

INFINITE’s L, Shin Hye Sun, Aad Lee Dong Gun attend “One and Only Love” first script reading
New Post has been published on http://www.whatsupkpop.com/infinites-l-shin-hye-sun-aad-lee-dong-gun-attend-one-and-only-love-first-script-reading/
INFINITE’s L, Shin Hye Sun, Aad Lee Dong Gun attend “One and Only Love” first script reading
Dah, a single love,’ athrillingscenes of reading the script was released.
On May 15, the KBS2 new tree drama “Dan, One Love” (play Choi Yoon Kyo, director Lee Jung Sup, production victory contents, monster union), which is scheduled to be broadcasted on May 15, Unpredictable fantastical heavenly romance depicting the story of Angel Dan (Kim Myung-soo). It is attracting attention with the feast of dancing dancing in the house theater, the spectacular meeting of the ballerina and the angel.
Actors such as Shin Hye Sun, Kim Myung Soo, Dong Gon Kim, Kim Bo Mi, Do Ji Won, Kim In Kwon, Lee Jung Sup and Director Choi Yoon Kyo were all on the scene of the ‘Dah, One Love’ The actors who have already gotten hooked with the characters have attracted attention by unveiling the hot spot reminiscent of the actual shooting location.
Shin Hye – sun depicted a curious and sophisticated ballerina ‘Lee Yeon – Seo’ in her own color. Shin Hye-sun, who has prepared the characters perfectly, has immersed himself in acting in a flash and raised expectations for her new ballerina transformation. Kim Myeong-soo, who was divided into an optimistic accusing angel ‘Kim Dong-soo’, rose up from the seat and acted warmly. He filled up the image of a devout angelic figure alive, and predicted his performance in the drama.
The fresh combination of Shin Hye Sun and Kim Myeong-su is the anticipation point of ‘a single love’. The two actresses portrayed the scene of a meeting between a ballerina “Deison” and a curious angel “Dahn” in a fantasy chemistry. I focused on how the meeting of Shin Hee Sun and Kim Myou-soo, which raised my expectations from the first breath, will be unfolded on the screen.
Lee Dong Gun was a charismatic actor as the artistic director of the ballet ‘Ji Kang Woo’. The rain is the owner of a unique artistic perspective. Based on his solid performance, Lee Dong Gun depicts an attractive adult man and artist. There is interest in Kim Bomi’s ballerina transformation of actual dance and native. Kim Bomi played the ballerina ‘Kim Nina’ to feel a subtle rivalry to Shin Hyesun in the play. With excellent ballet skills and stable smoke, it is expected to take a solid snowstorm in the house theater.
The presence of actors Dojewon and Kim In-kwon can not be overlooked. Dojewon plays Choi Young-ja, the director of ballet companies. Choi Young – ja is an ambitious figure who can not do anything for the ballet. Kim In – kwon breaks down into the archangel ‘Huh’, making Kim Myung – su and Kim Mi – soon after the play. The synergies of acting actors filled the drama with a lot of enthusiasm.
Above all, on the day of ‘Dae, One Love’, the actor and present ballerina also attended to the scene of reading the script and added special. It is the perfect preparation as a ballet drama that much. Hyun-jin Choi, a modern dancer who became known as ‘Dancing 9’, took his place as a choreographer, responsible for the beautiful stage of ‘Dahn, One Love’.
For four hours, it was the characters who played each without their weariness, and the scenario reading which was immersed in the play. Actors such as Shin Hye Sun, Kim Myung Soo, Dong Keun Kim, Kim BoMi, DoJi Won, and Kim In Kwon confirmed each other’s breathing, and Lee Jung-seop led the field with detailed command. I can not wait to see what kind of fantastical drama the drama of ‘Dah, One Love’ shows so much passion and immersion from the first breath.
‘Dahn, one love’ is Lee Jung-seop’s next work which produced many hit songs such as ‘Happy Hong Gil Dong’, ‘Baking King Kim Tong Gu’, ‘Healer’, ‘Local lawyer Jo Zhao 1’, ‘7 days Queen’ . ‘Dang, One Love’ will be broadcast first on May 15th.
