Modern Setting - Kelda and Keldan
I stand upon the jetty, my torch in hand, and try and burrow myself deeper into my coat.
"Does it have to be tonight?" I ask. It's an effort to keep my teeth from chattering.
Kelda/Keldan doesn't look up. "Yes."
They're adjusting something to do with the rigging, a winch or pulley or something around which the heavy rope is secured. The beam from my torch trembles as the damp cold of the marsh seeps into my fingers.
That draws their attention. They take in my miserable form, bundled up in a winter coat so thick that it makes turning my head a cumbersome negotiation, my nose and eyes already streaming as the icy night air digs in.
They've been planning this for a while, checking reports and conditions every morning and every evening, tutting and muttering to themselves as they disapprove of what nature has thrown our way.
It has to be tonight.
"Do you want to go home?" Kelda/Keldan asks, rising from their crouch over the rigging. It's open and honest, there's no blame, no accusation to the question, and I know they'll accept whatever answer I give.
The thought of the warm fire and a steaming mug of tea or chocolate is a cruel temptation, one that almost wins out. But this is important to them, so I shake my head, burrow deeper into my coat, and order myself to tough it out.
Rather than continue with the rope, Kelda/Keldan offers me their hand, palm up, fingers outstretched. I take it, and they help me into the boat.
"Here," they say, handing me a thermos that's toasty to the touch. "Pour one for me too?"
Of course, it's exactly what I'd imagined sipping around the fireplace at home, perfectly hot, beautifully warming as I sip. Kelda/Keldan spends a few more minutes on adjustments before we're finally underway, beneath their knowing hand, slipping gracefully away from the humming floodlights of the jetty and out into the marsh.
There's next to no wind tonight, still Kelda/Keldan manages to find what little remains, capturing in the boat's pale sails. I'm to point the torch forwards till we reach the lake, warning any other late sailors that there's another boat to be aware of.
Once we reach the open water, Kelda/Keldan secures the tiller, raises the sail, and drops the small weight that the tiny boat calls its anchor. We sit upon the deck side by side, our legs brushing against one another's, and just as I'm about to lean in closer, Kelda/Keldan asks me to close my eyes.
"Trust me," they say with a whisper they know plays havoc with my good sense.
When my eyes are closed, they take the torch from my hand and there's a sharp click. The silence washes over us with the dark. All is still, and were it not for the warmth of them at my side, I would feel terribly alone.
First their breath, then their lips ghost across my cheek. Their hand slides around my back, and even through the coat and the cold, I can feel the caress of each finger.
"Open your eyes," Kelda/Keldan whispers into my skin.
I do, and I find a sea of stars stretching beyond the horizon.

Dicking around with maps of the center continent of Cardassia based on a dubious map of Prime I found
Left is from a few centuries before the climatic change, right is current (mostly based on the map I found). Because this is a continent scale map there are many smaller bodies of water whose changes aren't noted. Notably, Cardassian cities almost always have a complex structure of canals dug as one if the first projects for transportation reasons, and to increase the humidity of the area as a public health issue. Cardassians-as-a-species initally evolved in a humid flooded forest (also called a freshwater swamp forest, such as those found in the Amazon Basin and throughout Southeast Asia) environment, and the current desertification is at war with their needs. Former brown areas that are now green can largely be accredited to the development and success of these canals.
The delta above the northmost mountains in the Valley of the Hebitians was a permanently flooded rainforest prior to the climatic change. It was bordered by a mangrove forest. Today it's still a fertile area as its water is fed by the mountains, but most of the old trees have been felled, and the rain is far less frequent.
The river traveling east from the Vorcal mountains feeds into a plain where it once was a seasonally flooded forest: today it's much smaller, until the floods come again.
The delta above the Girav mountains is a marshy delta in comparison to the one near the valley; both have plenty of reedy plants, but here they dominate.
The Valley of the Hebitians is a rift valley, and its lakes go very deep as a result. The regional highlands get large amounts of water, but the lowlands are quite dry away from the water, and overall its much drier than the area should be without the mountains. The Valley is so named because of the large amount of Hebitian tombs found there. The Northwest of the continent is currently thought to be where Cardassians first evolved to bipedalism and sapience.
The Helta highlands are a plateau, and I'll honestly say I still don't understand enough about how those form to say much more on it, other than to my understanding those are dry.
The center of the continent, north of the Keldan mountains, is rather flat and its two major rivers often change course, leaving small lakes that today gradually dry up, as well as other ephemeral bodies of water. Before the climatic change, Cardassian's main locus of cultural influence was the Keldan mountains and the flat lands around these rivers. As they stretched to the east, their territory overlapped with the Qåmtsu, one of the cultures under the umbrella of Hebitian.
The lake west of Ebeen is predicted to be gradually turning into an inland delta.

Though as Aibek who is the eldest he is fair with his siblings with respect, including his wife, his children and in-laws.
All five of the siblings share the same title as the Creator of the Island of Enchantment.
Though they are still the rulers, they are fair with their creations/citizens, for their wanting of peace.
Cerriwen and Donovan have daily bickerings, Kalhar and Blanche are sometimes chill but with seriousness. Aibek is fine with his siblings chaos.
Anger of each of the five shall not be tested at once.

By her own will of cruelest of her hands, created a land that can only existed underground deeper than any hellspawn than anything else that can be known of.
Is currently watching her work within the Grand Library, while the current ruler reigns upon the deadish city within the bloody cage.
Creator Name Reveal: Audrina Enyo
Fun Facts about the Demoness Empress:
Apparently, she is also married to another Creator in the Resurrection Side, who happens to be her husband.
If looks can kill, so will her own appearance. She doesn't care about the amount of attention she received.
Her own Sexuality? Can fuck with anything. Do not test it at her. (Her husband has full access with it)
Despite her brutality towards her citizens/creations in Dungeon Inkhell, she doesn't mind letting them to know what having a heart is to their destined partners.
Silent is her pure death presence within her own hell.
Also has two children (who are born genderless) after her marriage, but treats them with patience as a mother.

By her eyes that shines through as the brightest, created a land where only her creations can have access to the curse and can inflict it to one another, a curse that can never be broken by another spell.
Is currently watching her work within the Grand Library, while the current rulers who rules upon the kingdom that shines through her own mirror.
Creator Name Reveal: Onya Tanzanite
Fun Facts about the Glass Statue:
Is also married like the rest of her fellow creators, has a husband who is in the Resurrection Side.
Her sexuality is rather hard to guess, but doesn't have a preference.
Well isn't humanish if you notice it. Well is beautiful as a gem or glass statue, despite that she can walk and talk as a being itself.
Never gets angry.. But becomes more greedier for the eyes.
||She doesn't have eyes, she has glass sockets for her eyes but they are see through if you look closer at her like a mirror.||
Oddly... She doesn't shatter. No one knows how or why.

The Sole Creator of the Revoltion City. The Mastee who created the Inner Beast Race.
By his silent words of his lips and fingers, created a land where only the dangerous of the largest beasts can only be tamed or roamed freely within.
Like the rest, he is also watching his work from the Library as he watches some of the main heading of the clans ruling over the city, being the untameable and wild.
Creator Name Reveal: Sverre Gryphon
Fun Facts about the Blood-lusted Beast:
Has a husband and is also married, like the rest. His husband is also in the resurrection side as well.
His sexuality? Never has known it but doesn't have preferences on any gender.
Is not very humanish from the first glance of course, doesn't look even the slightest human within the flesh and bone.
He controls very aspect of every single of the blood-lusted creatures in Revoltion City, the tamed and the untamed.
The Main Master of any based Assassination. Do not try and test it with him.
Can meter up the control and power of each contracted blood creature and towards their master, such as the mind control and further more. Which it includes their venom within them as well.
Towards their out of controlled creations/citizens within his work. The word tame and control is welcome if anyone had tried to.
Their growl and it's sound when angered? Honey just run.
Has a daughter but is a bit rebellious.

"The Solarian Twins."
The two Creators of the Themyscira Empire. The twins who created the Cresteria Race.
By a separation of the two light of both day and night through both of the sun and the moon, created a land above the clouds where heaven cannot be there at all.
Just like the Dragons, they can both still rule by their own within the past and the present timeline, for both can be in the library or in their own country watching, though they mostly stayed within the library.
Creator Name/s Reveal:
Sunlight of the Celestial: Aelius Caelus
Moonlight of the Abyssal: Aruna Caelus
Fun Facts about the Solarian Twins:
They both hold the same title as the Creators of their work.
Both of them are single (but has different preferences on based their sexuality apparently)
Who is the eldest one between them? Actually both of them are, so not one of them are the youngest even if they are twins.
The facial looks of both are mysterious as they are but different as the creators, the Sun gains appreciation while the Moon gains respecting.
The Sun has a quiet personality while the Moon has a calm personality. But both are mostly intimidating as they should be.
Despite both of their strictly up-put towards their citizens/creations, they wouldn't mind letting them to have a feeling of happiness on anything.
Whenever the sun is in a bad mood, the moon would calm them down without making a fuss. But the roles can reversed.

"The Wandering Willow."
The Sole Creator of the Land of Wisteriana. The Mistress who created the Forest Whisperling Race.
By the sounds of her softish voice and gaze, created a forest land where the wanderers wander around within the mystical woods, whether to be lost or finding a place to stay for long.
Like some of the creators, she still rules rule by their own within the past and the present timeline, for both can be in the library or in their own country watching through the spirit oak tree, though she mostly watches within the library much more.
Creator Name Reveal: Lila Freesia
Fun Facts about the Wandering Willow:
Is also Single like some of the creators (but can be considered bi or les)
Her persona is quite difficult to read but is quiet but mostly holds her curiosity towards anything else that catches her eye.
Beautiful Singer... Like a creature luring you to a demise.
||Due to an amount of hearing of her songs, she collects ears so no one can hear the soft music||
||The Flowers on her hair whom they are ascessories are dangerous to touch, do not do it||
Has an unlike of an anger... Do not test her ok?
Despite her wandered to get lost creations/citizen, she wouldn't mind letting them to find a new place to call it a home to stay.
Can create tons of flowers, but rather the most strangest ones yet to see to be grown.

The Sole Creator of the Glowndia Isle. The Master who created the Angel-Type Race.
By his blessings bestowed upon his wings and words. Created a land upon the clouds which heaven cannot at the highest heights of the skies.
Is currently watching his work within the Grand Library, while the current rulers reigns upon the holy city within the orders or the bible.
Creator Name Reveal: Benedict Emmanuel
Fun Facts about the Silent Curator:
Is also married like some of the creators, so he has a wife(who is born genderless).
Due to his silent yet strong cold behavior he is hard to read on a certain basis with the other creators.
Looks respectfully and mostly a normal way but a bit different as a creator within his work.
Of course, ||holiness and a bible with him on rare days.||
Similar to Demon Empress, the silence around him is also his death presence. Though much more on the heaven kind than hell.
Despite his strictness with his creations/citizens, he doesn't mind letting them have the experience of freedom within their cages.
His words and sentences are much ||bibled-related|| so yeah, he can cuss a bad word for once but not daily.
Has a daughter but she tends to be clingy around him or his wife at any day and time.

It’s time to babble inspired by that meme about spoilers vs can’t-shut-up-itis because in the words of April Wolfe,
It’s not what happens, but how it happens that makes a movie worth watching.
RIP Switchblade Sisters, you were my fave podcast for quite some time.
A n y w a y
I am now going to attempt to apply that same rationale to my own work bc I want to talk about [REDACTED: original fiction spoilers] and his utterly untapped potential in XIV-verse.
If for some reason you’d rather not I’ll put it under a cut ✌️
CWs: semi-surgical references, non-consensual enchantment, Reaper questline spoilers, Shadowbringers spoilers, Voidark questline spoilers
Kyler Drake has something growing inside him. The cross-shaped scar over his heart, his only scar pock-marked with the telltale signs of stitches, is its only giveaway. In canon, he knows that something was done to him, but he doesn’t know what. His already prickly personality starts to become unstable, and he experiences surges of disproportionate anger that he doesn’t understand… and eventually the seed of enchantment planted within him triggers his body to split and duplicate…but what results is not strictly Keldan [humanoid]. The enchantment goes awry for reasons that I won’t get into right now, but it did not work as intended. It was intended to utilize Kyler’s body, reconfiguring him in a sense, to take him over and make him something new.
That something new, the something that split off from him rather than subsume him, is Edrian.
I’ve thought a lot about how to possibly bring Edrian to bear in XIV. One of Kyler’s possible bad ends is this enchantment working as originally intended in-canon. (That linked post is also the only art I’ve shared of Edrian to date…I should draw him again.)
As far as what precisely Edrian is in XIV-verse, which is bound up with Kyler’s lost memories, this is what I’ve currently arrived at:
Edrian is the void-seed planted in Kyler by a cult of mages who are descended from Mhachi tradition, though this ritual is not something that has ever been attempted before. They have conducted magical experiments and have arrived at this next step
They are attempting to find a way to grant a voidsent a living body, rather than summon them into a statue. Their attempts and experiments have led here, to something that is intended to subsume the host without destroying the body (all past attempts have destroyed the body)
Some time after the procedure Kyler finally slips his chains and escapes them, perhaps even knowing what they did to him and what it means, slaughtering them so they cannot experiment on anyone else, cannot do again what they did to him
The immense strain - physical, emotional, psychological - that this whole experience put Kyler under means that when he’s fleeing across the desert and gets sunstroke, he collapses and loses all his memories but for his name
The blessing of light awakening in Kyler in ARR is what has, largely, kept Edrian in check. Since Light, the Astral force, is of stasis and Edrian’s connection had not been given enough time to flourish, he never gains a significant enough hold over Kyler’s mind or body to begin to break through, even though he is a being of Umbral aspect, of change
And this is where I haven’t fully decided like Anything. I think it makes sense that there are little murmurs, little stirrings of him after Midgardsormr cuts WoL off from Hydaelyn, and perhaps even after Kyler regains the Blessing of Light. In a timeline where Kyler actually picks up the DRK quests, I think Edrian would be entangled with Kyler’s Fray/Esteem, perhaps even would be his Fray entirely.
But.
Part of what empowers Edrian is Kyler’s anger, and he has his temper in check in a timeline in which he hasn’t been pushed to the brink by Haurchefant’s death. (I have a WIP of an alternate timeline in which Edrian does in fact subsume Kyler before or after the fight with Thordan, leaving Shtola and Alphinaud to wrangle and bind him and bring him back to Ishgard to an Aymeric who is already grieving the loss of his and Kyler’s mutual lover Haurchefant, and who does not yet know that he will grieve the potential loss of Estinien, as well, all while grappling with what Kyler has become….)
And then they introduced Reaper. And I knew what I wanted to do with him: Edrian becomes Kyler’s Avatar.
Provisionally, I think they arrive there via…
In fic-verse Kyler doesn’t know what the tattoos on his solar plexus are, and none of the Scions have ever recognized it, either. It’s a seal: for translation from canon purposes it renders him an aetherically-closed system. He can manipulate aether to a degree, enough to teleport for certain, but while it is intact he is woefully bad at magic, no matter how hard he tries.
EITHER a) as in canon, he put it on himself before he lost his memory, hoping it would help hold back the development of the voidseed and/or prevent him being magically tracked by any remaining cultists, or b) it was put on him by the mages, in order to safeguard as much of his aether as possible for the seed
Zane is the one who is proficient at magic, and his canon classes (RDM, BLM, WHM) are the ones that deal most closely with voidsent. Add to this that Zane is the one who does the Voidark quests and he has vastly more experience with void stuff than his brother
Kyler gets caught up with the Lemures somehow. Drusilla recognizes that he already, in a way, has a pact, and tells him so. Kyler, whose memories never get restored (partially bc he tries really hard not to remember or consider or investigate) is shocked by this. The fact that he doesn’t know sounds a warning bell for her and she takes charge, demanding that they get to the bottom of this situation for everyone’s safety, including Kyler’s
He ends up calling on Zane, remembering how his brother talked about the Voidark and the strange catlike familiar that had survived since Mhach
Cait Sith recognizes the seal immediately, shenanigans ensue with breaking it for Kyler’s own wellbeing
In this case, I think they would be able to discover enough of what was potentially going on or being attempted with the enchantment for Cait Sith to insist upon the voidseed’s removal, again for Kyler’s health, and to guide the Redbill medic in doing so
Kyler then retains the seed but outside himself, it allowing him to see, hear, and speak with a phantasmal version of Edrian, who is, quite frankly, simply glad to finally be free and in recompense forges a true pact with Kyler, one that subsumes neither of them
Enshroud then allows Edrian to do what the mages were attempting to achieve in the first place, but temporarily and with Kyler’s consent, and Edrian is free, no longer trapped in the prison of Kyler’s mind
When does this happen? Pfft. Who knows?? Not me!!
PS Edrian has black feathered wings, long crimson hair, piecing electric-blue eyes, chitinous glossy black patches like exoskeleton over some of his joints, claws, sharp white teeth, and the voice of a siren ✌️ he’s my OG monstrous slut and I love him ✌️✌️

No Haven 0.982 Quality of Life Update
Highlights for this includes the new Endearment mechanic, Slaver retirement, and more

If you don’t have RAGS and you need a copy to run it there’s one on the help page here or the one pinned on the patreon you can find a link to in the attached read me which is more up to date. If RAGS has never worked on your system despite the help page suggestions then it might be worth trying with one of the alternate players. There’s also improvements on there to the RAGS player that can also help with performance.

-Endearment :
---New mechanic to allow submissive focused players a better chance to hold onto their Encampment while providing some some extra power for those who aren't going to be as worried about that.
---You earn an Endearment up to a maximum of three each time an Assignment is completed with a reward of 400 gold pieces or more. You also earn an Endearment when you earn a Slaving Distinction.
---If an attempt is made to dispose you as the leader of the Encampment, and you have an Endearment available, one will be spent to prevent this. This will block any attempts for seven days, and will provide an Encampment Morale improvement.
---You can choose to spend an Endearment to prevent a Forced Encounter with some new text to reflect that.
---You can spend one to gain a buff on Assignments that will last for seven days for each Endearment spent. While this is active an initial roll of 85% or higher on an Assignment will be rerolled once. This does stack with other rerolls such as from the Draconic Majesty racial or having a Manned Watchtower to further reduce the chance than an Assignment will result in a Disaster.
---You can spend one to persuade your slavers to reach into their own pockets to help out to gain some extra gold. This is affected by their traits and race in how willing they are to contribute or if it's going to be like getting blood from a stone.
---You start with the maximum three Endearments on No Pressure and Easier, one on Normal to reflect your slavers being impressed with you bringing them together, and none on Hardcore. Gold requirement to earn one is reduced to 200 on No Pressure.
---All Assignment rerolls now show what the roll would have been before the reroll is applied.
-New Commissions :
---No Haven Title. Has an expanded version used for now when Leviathan is brought up in a lore unlock.
---Imperial Muses (City of Aversol). Thank you to the patron who provided this commission.
---Land Piracy (Dreadsea Coast).
---Shark of the Cards (Dreadsea Coast). Initially will use the Male version, and also has a Female, Bimbo, and Sissy version which will then be used based on who you send. Also used for the Sea Elf Captain start's portraits and examines.
---Unattended (Great Plains). Has an alternative version used for Critical Success. Both versions will be used for Abyss Troll and Dwarf Slave Examines.
---Event: Disbanded! Also used for the Keldan and Ooze Slaver Examines.
---Unique: Alison Graye. New Slaver Examine. Thank you to the patron who provided this commission.
---Personal: Encampment when you have trained your first True-Angel Slave in Advanced Obedience Training. Also has a zoomed in version more focused on the True-Angel used for their Examine, and for the Truly Devine results where you manage to enslave one.
---Personal: Encampment, assigning a new Bedwarmer, or the Finish Day description of your Bed Warmers if you are playing as Nethemir Male.
-Miscellaneous additions :
---Instead of dismissing a slaver you can now give them a retirement instead at the cost of gold and a slave. This guarantees that the slaver is removed regardless of their reputation, and will give a global morale bonus. If you're willing to spend enough and part with an impressive enough slave you can also earn a Slaving Distinction and an Endearment from this.
---Trying to Ambush after receiving the Letter now does something rather than just being a waste of time.
---The Cult Vessel Nethemir start and the unique Kaara de Sindero Oscuro are now smarter than they were before.
---Rynhart's Jewel Arms aspect has been in for a magic tune up. Now she will only be depleted if the new roll, including the modifier, is 15% or less. So roughly about a third of the time the depletion will kick in compared to before.
---The Kitsune Maid start has gained permanent makeup and a lore page.
---Removed the Abyss Troll Futanari placeholder. Will use the standard Abyss Troll Examine for now.
---To Hunt a Paladin now has alternative removal text if the Slaver in question has Obedient or Stubborn.
---The Draenei Mercenary Herald and the Taggerfolk Fisherjack starts can now select Feminine in Full Custom. Those two were requested and so please let me know if you have others that you'd like me to add that option for.
---Being a Convent now adds a Critical Success for the second, third, and fourth position of Temple Takeover.
---As Wise-Woman didn't really fit Wisps who are more likely to start with Magic: Nature their new Profession for having that trait is Evergreen. This also applies to Fae, Nymphs, and Shadow Outcasts.
---Added a mallet to the potential weapons.
---The longer assignments that automatically set out Nightly Planning will no longer overwrite existing Nightly planning potentially robbing you of a bonus.
---Rewrote the Critical Success when you're the one getting used on House of Ill Repute.
---Expanded the Fail if you don't go on Involuntary Membership.
---Expanded the Critical Success and Success results for Scout the Deep Mountain. Now has some specific for you going text, and some Submissive text if you don't go.
-Bug fixes :
---Critical fix for Corner of Your Very Own potentially breaking the playthrough if you go as the slave as the Fae Mist Etendre start.
---Fix for Shadriel not getting the chat option to actually assign her a slave during one of the potential results from her events.
---Fix for the double pause if you do manage to resist a Forced Encounter.
---Fix for the slave being messed up if you repick or cancel your choices on Favoured Pet Training.
---Fix for Oozes and Wisps being assumed to have Tentacle Beasts if they're Beastmasters.
---Fix for the 'I'm the Biggest, so I'm in Charge' start not always being the biggest. Randomly generated Futa player characters will now be bigger in general, those with that option even more so, and there's a check to ensure that the generated Males will be smaller.
---Fix for Advanced Dominance Training Success getting confused about what is being done to who. Text has also been expanded to tidy up the wording and to flesh it out some more.
---Fix for not being able to make use of Futas by fucking them in the pussy (only available if you've not changed the option to make them have a cock only).
---Fix for Bimbo Training Basic or Advanced not recommending a Slaver in the third or fourth position.
---Fix for Ogres having the Supported Assets racial but it not actually doing anything for them.
---Fix for some potential CT errors when earning Slaving Distinctions.

Story Setting - Kelda and Keldan
"Did you ask Lars?"
Kelda/Keldan looks up at me from the familiar little fishing boat.
"Would it matter if I didn't?"
"Of course it would. He's very adept at paying slights back, you know."
They smirk. "He can try."
"Kelda/Keldan..."
"I asked him, and he agreed."
"Really?"
Rather than answer me directly, Kelda/Keldan slinks down deeper into the boat, crooking a finger in my direction to beckon me forth. I sigh, but follow, a little unsteady as the much loved little vessel rocks beneath my weight.
Kelda/Keldan's hands steady me, guiding me down to sit in front of them. The evening sun glints off the water, rippling like liquid gold across their features.
"Where are we going?" I ask, looking around for the oars.
The water ripples.
"Somewhere quiet," Kelda/Keldan says, amusement making their voice lighter than usual. "It's all in hand, Love."
I glance up. We're already many lengths away from the jetty, moving at speed that is less than an oar's stroke, but more than the drift of a current.
"Are you planning on bringing both me and the boat back before we're next needed?" I ask, casting my companion a sceptical smirk of my own.
Their left hand is in the water, drawing slow circles with their fingertips, caressing it into carrying us onwards.
"The fisher will have his boat by first light," they say, leaning back against the stern, the tiller redundant and used purely to rest their arm upon.
"And me?"
Kelda/Keldan hums. "I'm not sure when I'll 'return' you. After all, whose need am I to judge the time by? There's? Or mine?"
In attempts to keep my mind from those particular intricacies, and the way Kelda/Keldan's ice-blue eyes slide across my skin, I make a study of the marsh. The Mire stretches out before us, empty sky and endless reeds, aflame with the fading sun.
The evening chorus serenades our passage, the first wisps of mist coiling around the stumps of long fallen trees. Kelda/Keldan begins to hum, though I don't recall when the first note reached my ear. The melody is familiar, the words teasing the fringes of my thoughts.
Light sinks down into dusk, then twilight, and on we go, deeper, the forgotten melody swaying the reeds and calling forth the first stars.
The lightest pressure, near the base of my spine, draws me out of daydreams.
Kelda/Keldan's lips hush gently into my ear, their breath a rustle of grass, their touch dancing across my skin.
"You have to be quiet, Love," they whisper against my throat. "I brought you here for the peace of this place."
"Do you want me to be quiet?" I gasp. "Because you're not helping if so."
They chuckle, equal parts of their amusement coming to me through sound as through the thrum of their chest.
"I want you. Everything else can remain ashore."
"But-"
Their lips silence mine.
"Only you and only I," they say when we have parted. "All else remains ashore."

Kalixti and Keldan. It's complicated 🙂
DnD story time...
Kali is my shadow sorcerer and Kel is her um... friend... who's been missing. Last session she managed to sort of contact him because she has some weird teleportation (???) magic that may or may not kill her if she uses it too much. So it's great 😊
Kali knew she had the weird magic but until yesterday she's only ever used it subconsciously but after she managed to get a sending spell out to Kel (via someone else) and he replied with "Don't look for me, it's dangerous. Don't try to find me, it's for your own good." (something along those lines) she obviously tried to contact him... and she did manage... at least for a second... only to wake up to her very worried party because apparently she was screaming her lungs out in her sleep, so yay!
And then she was told by a weird fey creature that she's a candle burning very bright and very fast... SO EVERYTHING IS FINE.

hi and also hello. may i please hear everything about seia i would like the seia breakdown please and thank you <3
seia breakdown!!!! seia my beloved <3
the short version is that seia is 95% of keldan's impulse control. long version under the cut
okay in my head i picture seia as being from like a mountain village whose primary economy is mining-based. this is almost completely irrelevant to the actual story but i planned out everyone's backstories like three years ago so you're getting it. seia's naturally smaller than most people from these mining villages tend to be but he was also more sick than the average kid (which did not help) so growing up he was sort of on the frail side. that being said there was absolutely zero like "gender role" expectation that he would ever have to work in the quarries, because his culture doesn't really have Gender the way others do, and thus don't have gender roles either; everyone just contributes what they can to make sure the household runs smoothly, which means seia grew up helping out with stuff like finances, gardening/animal tending if he had the energy for it, sewing/mending clothes/weaving, other stuff around the house that's less physical labor. (btw this cultural view of gender is also why seia's nonbinary; he literally just cannot be bothered with translating his experience for others, and the first person who spoke to him in another language assigned him he/him pronouns and seia was like "whatever".)
anyway. there's some imperial/war-related stuff that happens next. crown soldiers show up, "this land belongs to this nation now", and they ship off basically everyone who's still school-aged to boarding schools in the empire proper. (two notes: first, i haven't named like most of the places that are relevant to backstory. yes i've had this wip for years. move on. second, i am assuming you've heard of cultural genocide. that's what's happening here.)
seia ends up rising through the ranks so to speak and gets a lot of attention for his knack for languages. he ends up in service of the crown that kidnapped him (this is probably around age 16 or so), as a translator/interpreter, and after a couple years ends up sold/traded to the highest bidder (melati's father, the king of. yet another name i haven't thought up yet.) they use nicer words than "sold/bought", because "slavery is illegal", but i'm not going to pretend seia had any choice in what's happening.
he does use his essentially-free access to royal libraries to do a LOT of reading, both before and after the trade. he teaches himself a lot of stuff, including More languages and some "applicable" life skills. (read: forgery. he gets terrifyingly good at forging official documents. he doesn't use this until after he joins up with keldan, because he's afraid of what will happen if he gets caught, but with keldan he's a bit of a loose cannon lmao)
also. MOSTLY irrelevant to the story but seia has like one friend, who was the youngest son of the first king seia worked for. they made it work alarmingly well despite the power imbalance thing, and the prince teaches seia how to swordfight. seia later trades that in for a dagger, saying it's more his style, but in a pinch.... absolutely deadly. they keep in touch after seia gets traded off, they write letters to each other in varying languages and use code names. the prince's real name is kazik tho.
also also. working for melati's father and spending like 90% of his free time in the library, seia's seen her before and she's seen him. they've talked more than once and melati would even loosely call him a friend at this point in their lives. being a princess she doesn't really question the exact terms of his employment. it's not really malicious, it's just that in her mind, the palace is kind of the best gig anyone could hope for, and she has a daughter's trust in her father (for now) and believes he'd never hold anyone against their will. and while technically he's not holding seia prisoner, seia has nothing and no one on the outside, and nowhere to go, and a contract a mile long that he doesn't know the exact terms of but surely there's a clause in there about abandoning your post before your term is served (there is. seia ends up breaking it anyway).
anyway. seia meets keldan on a diplomatic trip to okskiy, where keldan lounges around the throne room despite his king's best efforts to get rid of him before the party starts. (this is like almost immediately post-aderyn-breakup btw). seia doesn't get much time off during the actual meeting/negotiations/dinner, but once everyone's drunk and happy seia gets to slip away from his interpreter role, and he and keldan make small talk for a while and seia commits his face to memory because it feels like he's the first (second?) person to ever actually look at seia. it's complicated.
they end up meeting again on seia's "home turf"; keldan's delivering something on behalf of his king, and seia's the only one who speaks a language keldan understands, so they get plenty of more-or-less one-on-one conversation time. call it bonding or whatever. later, keldan's wandering around the castle (read: snooping) and happens upon the king propositioning seia (this is compete chance here. keldan's the only person i know who's obnoxious enough to have even the opportunity to stumble in on this conversation), which seia does not want but can't exactly say no to without risking. yknow. his life.
the king fucks off w/ keldan's arrival (not that keldan understood what was being said exactly but the postures... expressions... yeah) to avoid suspicion (does not work) and keldan's like. "fuck that guy." seia replies "he's my king." keldan says "what if he wasn't though" and then gets to play white knight for seia for about thirty minutes (the time it takes them to get back onto keldan's ship) before keldan really starts to get to know seia and realizes he is WAY out of his depth here.
they're more or less business partners after that. it's weird because seia definitely is not considered part of keldan's "crew", but keldan's operation is able to expand thanks to the breadth of languages seia can speak, seia travels everywhere with keldan + has his own cabins on the ship that he never uses bc he's always in keldan's, they read each other's minds and gaze longingly when the other isn't looking, but if a crewmate asks whether they've slept together keldan is like "why would we do that". they're a hot mess. seia forges like 90% of keldan's documents, whatever he needs (the other 10% are, technically, legal), and literally asks for nothing in return. keldan's always putting gold coins in with the rest of seia's stuff or trying to slip him payment some other way. seia stashes his collection of inks and fancy pens and parchments under keldan's bed.
the really sticky part is that neither of them really talk about their pasts. granted keldan can't talk about his childhood without getting into stuff that would make him sound crazy ("turns out there is stuff below the continents" crazy), but neither of them know where the other is from, they don't communicate w/each other in either person's native language, seia doesn't even know keldan had a partner before him.
keldan's also a bit insane. so he gets all these random ideas for all kinds of things (business, ship repairs/additions, fanciful vacations, you name it) and then seia's the one who filters it down into something doable. half the time seia is then also the one who implements it, whatever it is. keldan will be like "lets do a vacation on one of those waterfall islands" and seia will be like "what if instead we just spend a couple weeks off in okskiy" and then also schedule that time off into their calendar. this is more or less because seia is wayyyy more organized but also a little bit because even tho keldan has the big ideas, he wouldn't actually be into them. he would hate the wet humid nature of the waterfall islands and seia knows that and talks him out of it, and keldan wants seia happy so he agrees readily when seia suggests okskiy instead. they make it work somehow and everyone's like "how have you not broken up yet" and they're like "broken what up?"
so. that's where they're at at the beginning of the story, and then aderyn and melati walk onto their ship as a unit and everyone collectively is like. "what the fuck" for a whole host of different reasons. the plot of sky sea is like 50% character-driven conflict in the sense that while aderyn and keldan are trying to reconcile their old history, aderyn's guilt, and keldan's anger, seia's also insanely jealous but doesn't understand why and almost flat out refuses to talk to keldan about it. aderyn and melati have the whole "we're only in this together because both our lives are in danger" on top of the whole "you said no one would know who you were" "how was i supposed to know that the one person who could possibly still be alive to recognize me would be on this boat" thing. seia and melati have a little bit of a guilt/anger thing happening too; it's sort of "logically i know it wasn't her fault but emotionally i need someone to blame and she should have known something was wrong". keldan and melati are pretty much the only pair NOT fighting, but they do bond over being generally obnoxious and high-maintenance. when aderyn and seia aren't trying to kill each other over extremely minor arguments that are actually metaphors for much bigger issues, they're complaining about "royals. ugh". keldan's crew wants to quit sooooo bad except that they also find the drama highly amusing. one guy on the crew is like 'man i always wanted to be part of a high-speed chase' and boy does he get his wish.

Edda Barlow, roughly thirty and the aunt to Luella Barlow-- who calls her “mama” because she really is the only mother she knows. I have it that it has always been just the two of them until they came to this town— now potential LIs for Edda are Louis and Keldan.
