Joe Joyce and Joseph Parker put on quite a show this past Saturday night in Manchester. Great fight and pleasing looks from both fighters. Nothing to complain about with Parker’s sequined black, red and blue look -- but I really enjoyed Joyce’s white trunks with multi-color overlapping leaf design. This isn’t the first time Joyce has delivered a great and unique set, by the way. As a sidebar - this fight featured a less common Fly vs Paffin Sport glove match-up.

What's next for Zhilei Zhang?

What's next for Zhilei Zhang?
Despite all the credit boxing has earned in 2023, the biggest disappointment has been the heavyweights.
Tyson Fury has found a way to significantly boost his bank balance without doing any serious boxing. Oleksandr Usyk, other than one controversial round, made light work of a mandatory challenger who was out of his depth. Anthony Joshua is in a rebuilding phase, producing nothing spectacular or resembling the Joshua of old following his back-to-back losses to Usyk. Deontay Wilder and Andy Ruiz Jr are nowhere to be seen. Dillian Whyte was withdrawn from a Joshua rematch after failing a PED test.
2023 has been a great year for boxing but an absolute shambles for the heavyweights.
However, arguably the most notable exception came in April and the introduction of a new top heavyweight contender who breathed life into a gun-shy blue-riband division.
Previously undefeated Joe Joyce, deemed to be the biggest threat to the elite, was no longer undefeated after six brutal rounds with China’s Zhilei “Big Bang” Zhang. Joyce had swiftly built a real reputation in the professional ranks. The 2016 Olympic silver medalist may appear slow and defensively vulnerable, but he won his first 15 fights by imposing his size and power with a relentless engine and pressure, with a high volume and a granite chin, steamrolling nearly all in front of him.
Joyce then came up against Zhang. The Chinese heavyweight matched Joyce in size and power, with superior speed and movement, and is a crafty southpaw. The referee brought a halt to the contest in the sixth round after severe swelling to the eye of Joyce.
In the rematch, Joyce suffered a devastating third-round knockout defeat. After a cagey opening round, Zhang closed the distance in round two and found his range, landing solid shots with consistency to Joyce’s head. In the third, Zhang put all of his nearly 290lbs behind a beautiful southpaw right hook that flattened Joyce for the first time in the Brit’s professional career. This punch would have cleaned out any heavyweight in the world today and introduced Zhang to the heavyweight top table, undoubtedly a top 5 heavyweight in the world.
Now that Zhang has entered the heavyweight elite conversations, the main question is, who is next for Big Bang?
Fury and Usyk have reportedly signed contracts for an upcoming undisputed showdown. Of course, you cannot be faulted for wondering why there is no date, and some may understandably remain skeptical all the way up until both men are in the same ring and the first bell goes. For now, though, this announcement rules out an immediate title shot for Zhang. As the WBO Interim titleholder, Zhang is the WBO mandatory, meaning he will be in line for a title shot once undisputed is out of the way.
Joshua, however unlikely, would be a great upcoming fight for Zhang. With the desired Wilder fight in January off the table, Joshua may be on the lookout for an alternative opponent in December. Zhang, however, seems unlikely. After consecutive losses to Usyk, the last thing Joshua needs right now is to face an intelligent southpaw with a troublesome backhand and bags of composure. Nevertheless, what a statement it would be by Joshua if he were to take on the assignment and pass with flying colors. Other than actually beating Usyk in a trilogy fight, there is no other better fight for Joshua to potentially get rid of those Usyk demons.
If Zhang was to face Wilder, it is hard to think of another heavyweight fight that would contain as much power in the same ring. Wilder has 42 knockouts in 43 wins, and Zhang has stopped 21 opponents in 26 wins. Moreover, the story of the power possessed by these two men goes beyond quantifiable stats. It lies even more in the fact that both have a track record of putting a dent in fighters who have never previously been stopped and becoming the first to do so. Deontay Wilder did it brilliantly twice with Luis Ortiz, and Zhang recently did it with Joyce. Wilder and Zhang have defensive vulnerabilities, meaning this would be an explosive fight destined not to go the distance.
Perhaps the fight Zhang deserves the most while awaiting a title shot is a shot at redemption in a rematch with unbeaten Croatian Filip Hrgovic, to whom he dropped a tight decision in August 2022. With both men on the verge of collapsing from exhaustion as the fight neared its end after Zhang had knocked Hrgovic down in a close fight, it appeared Zhang had done enough to nick the win. Redeeming the only blemish on his career against a fellow top contender could also be a very attractive proposition for Zhang if the opportunity presented itself. Of course, with Hrgovic’s IBF mandatory situation, the Croat may not be interested in revisiting those old, risky deep waters.
What Zhang has now done with that universe-shaking big bang of a wallop against Joyce is reignite a stagnant heavyweight division. We may be on the verge of the first undisputed heavyweight showdown since 1999, but for this moment in time, during a year in 2023 that has been poor for the heavyweights, Zhang was a savior for the division.
Who would say no to Fury vs. Zhang, Usyk vs. Zhang, Joshua vs. Zhang, Wilder vs. Zhang, or Hrgovic vs. Zhang rematch? Suddenly, a new challenger has entered the scene. He did it the right way, too. There were no questionable sanctioning body antics or political movements. He did a number on the world-ranked heavyweight that stood across him twice.
At 40, Zhang does not have long left in this game. Let’s hope that outstanding win against Joyce wasn’t for nothing and this gun-shy heavyweight division gives him a chance.

Zhilei Zhang KOs Joe Joyce in the 3rd!
I don't know what the game plan was for Joe Joyce but circling slowly to his left not doing anything or moving his head could not have been it, right? Cause all it did was put him into position to get blasted to hell by that right hook from the southpaw.
Literally, 90% of Joyce circling to his right. Zhang was landing that left hand again and again. Then he got blasted by the right hook from Zhang.
