今日のおはジャズ「Lookin' Good」Joe Gordon '61

ゴードンはシェリー・マンの「His Men」のメンバーで、名盤「At The Black Hawk」で名演を聴かせたトランペッター。これは彼の数少ないリーダー作のうちの1枚でずっと欲しかったのです。将来を嘱望されていたのに、35歳の若さでホテル火災により夭逝。

ラッパはよく鳴り、フレージングも鮮やか。１曲目のちょっとJeannineにも似た曲から快調に飛ばしてます。ハード〜ポスト・バップって感じでコンテンポラリー・レーベルの良い録音と相まって心地良いアルバムです。ただ、地味と言えば地味かな…

唯一とっても気になるのはジミー・ウッズって人のアルト。まぁ、粗削りというか荒っぽい。聞く所によると、折角発掘したオーネット・コールマンをアトランティックに取られたコンテンポラリーがその後釜として売り出したのがこの人だとか。そう言えば似てるかも。でも、組み合わせとしてはどうなんだろ。ゴードンの方をもっと大切に売って欲しかったかな。

バックはジミー・ボンド以外は知らなかったのだけど、悪くは無いけど、特筆するほど凄くもない。だから地味になっちゃってるのかな。やはり、ここはシェリー・マン御大やその一味が加わってたら更に魅力的だったかも。才気溢れるゴードンだけに惜しいアルバムだと言えます。
